hese three words represent the core values of Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics. Every day, when staff, physicians, and administration make decisions and future plans, these three values are in everything they do.

What does this mean for you as a patient… or the family member of a patient… or just as a member of the community that does not require medical care? It means a lot – because with these three “core values” comes a concentrated effort on everyone’s part at MGH&FC – from housekeeping and dietary services, to clinical staff and patient care, to physicians and administration – to plan, implement, and review “what is best for the patient and their family” at all times.

Quality Quality is a big part of customer satisfaction, but what does it mean in healthcare? What kind of quality should you expect when you come to MGH&FC as a patient?

“When someone comes here as a patient, they should expect care that is focused on ‘best practices.’ Many hospitals promise ‘quality’, but not many follow through by being the best they can be. Some hospitals fall within the

get moving minimum standards of quality and stay there,” said Tina Shoemaker, Quality Improvement consultant to MGH&FC. “At MGH&FC, we are not satisfied with minimum standards of quality. We are constantly looking at research and other hospitals’ best practices to measure our progress and continue to improve.”

“This is accomplished by evaluating our current performances, and then working with the appropriate staff to implement the necessary changes,” said Kris Davies, Decision Support/ Quality coordinator. “This process has the patients’ needs as the number one goal.” Data is compiled

by MGH&FC Decision Support staff on quality measures, and is then compared to other leading hospitals’ best practice methods.

From there, committees are formed to set goals and determine “how to get” to these higher levels of care.

The subsequent changes can affect staffing, procedural changes, and equipment needs.

While quality improvement efforts at MGH&FC are based on best practices, the process for improvement is in the hands of Hospital staff members and providers who serve our patients. continued on page 4...

“A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do”... to be healthy!

Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it?

Mozell Snider, RT(R)(M)(CT), CAT scan, mammography, and general radiography technologist in MGH&FC’s Diagnostic Imaging department, decided she needed to take control of her health destiny – because her “family genes” were not the best.

“My genetic background isn’t great for longevity,” she admitted. “My dad died at 40… and I don’t have the best eating habits, either. I eat a lot of packaged, processed foods that aren’t the best for you. But I knew I needed to do something because raising a family and having a busy lifestyle does not make it easy to eat healthy.”

With weak genes and unhealthy eating habits, Mozell Snider’s plan to “get moving” started out simple...

The constant desire driving Mozell to beat her genetic odds was, “I wanted to see my two daughters grow up and experience life’s special events – like walking down the aisle, and seeing their grandchildren grow up.”

So, with her weak genes and unhealthy eating habits, Mozell’s plan to “get moving” started out simple. She began by joining the Shelton Athletic Club and walking on the treadmill for 30 minutes (which over time turned into a jog) and lifting weights. Then she joined an aerobics class. That’s where she began to feel something spark. She enjoyed the variety of group workouts, and how the room full of participants pushed each other. It didn’t take long to decide she wanted to be a group fitness instructor, so she could motivate others and keep the workouts fresh and new. Now, 10 years later, she admits her routine has become a habit – a habit that if she doesn’t stick to, makes her feel like her energy is being wasted, and needs to get out!

Mozell’s day starts early, at 5:30 a.m., with an hour workout as a group instructor, or being led through her own boot camp workout. She then heads to work at Mason General Hospital, helping patients with diagnostic procedures. Her work ethic has earned her the distinction of “Employee of the Month” and many other accolades from her peers. Her smile, her can-do attitude, and her way of making you feel good no matter the situation, also makes her a stand-out with patients. “When I feel good about myself, I just can’t contain it,” she said. “And being an exercise instructor has helped me coach my patients in moving their bodies into different positions for imaging,” she added. At the end of her work day Mozell heads back to the athletic club to lead more classes. continued on page 5...

caring Mason County Prescription Assistance Program Three years ago a Prescription Assistance

pilot program was started in Mason County. And now, three years later, the program is still going strong, with more than 250 residents connected to assistance in obtaining medications they need.

The mission of the program is to assist low-income residents in accessing their needed medications at reduced or no cost. Many pharmaceutical companies offer their medications at no cost to those who are struggling to afford their medications. This can include Medicare beneficiaries, particularly those who have fallen into the coverage gap or “donut hole”. The programs are primarily for chronic condition medications and require an application to be completed by the patient and their healthcare provider.

Because program guidelines vary by company, sorting through them can be a challenge.

Annette Brown, Mason County Prescription Assistance program coordinator, will walk you through the programs to see which may be appropriate for you. She is at Olympic Physicians in Shelton every Friday morning from 8 to10 a.m.; and at Shelton Orthopedics Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. She is also at North Mason County Resource in Belfair the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month from 1 to 3 p.m.

It may seem out of the ordinary to think that MGH&FC would be concerned about the well-being of the community, but according to Tom DiDonna, R.N., MSN, D.H.Sc., director of education for MGH&FC – this concern is a very important component to keeping a community well. “Our Mission Statement takes us beyond our walls and into the community,” said Dr. DiDonna. For more than 25 years the Mission Statement has been – We take every possible action to protect and promote the health of the people in Mason County while extending respect and compassion as we serve each individual.

Dr. DiDonna and his education assistant, Sherry Curtis, BA, MAT, reach out to our community by offering classes such as CPR and First Aid courses to local residents in the community, and advanced resuscitation courses for our Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professional and volunteer personnel.

We are fortunate to have EMS volunteers and professionals, paramedics, emergency services technicians, our entire Hospital and Clinic staff, physicians, nurses, technologists, community members, a supportive administrative leadership, and hospital commissioners who are committed to continuous learning to improve the care we provide to the people in our community,” added Dr. DiDonna.

“That commitment requires hard work, resulting in a safer, healthier community.”

It is obvious that Mozell likes her job­by the constant smile on her face, and a wit about her that makes everyone else smile.

“I love working here, and helping my patients at a time that can be very unsettling for them, and sometimes painful,” she concluded. Mozell is the first to admit her exercise program has made her a better person all around, and she encourages everyone she can to discover the same for themselves.

ason General Hospital Foundation and Skookum Rotary are working together to bring the joy of books to children in South Africa who, without their help, might never own a book.

Treasures Thrift Store Director Jim Dok collects books for the project from surplus donations. Books are evaluated for content and condition by Denis Leverich, immediate past president of Skookum Rotary, who gives them to Marion Spence and her husband, John Hink. Spence and Hink are members of Durbin Bay Rotary Club who split their time living between Shelton and South Africa.

“Two years ago, Marion and I came up with an idea to help children at Addington School in South Africa battle illiteracy by getting books in the students’ hands,” said Leverich. “Marion decided the best way to get the books there was to take them on their trips as extra luggage.” Leverich pitched the idea to Dok, and a perfect partnership was born.

Leverich said that Skookum Rotary chose to help South Africa because of the connection between Skookum Rotary, Durbin Bay Rotary, and Rotary International – whose emphasis is on world peace and literacy.

“A book can mean so much to a child, especially when you say, ‘this book is for you.’ When you hand them a book, the look on their faces is priceless – they have a sense of ownership and pride, and it becomes their most prized possession,” said Leverich. He went on to add that one day a child who receives a book might even become an ambassador for world peace, “and something as simple as a book can be a stepping stone.”

Live, learn and work at MGH&FC Cheryl (Arnold) Thompson, a medical assistant at MGH Shelton Family Medicine, began working at Shelton Family Medicine almost 16 years ago, after becoming a medical assistant. She is a 1992 Shelton High School graduate. “I absolutely love my job. The patients are wonderful to work with and my co-workers are so supportive of each other. It is really a pleasure to work here,” said Cheryl.

In addition, ATSU stated, “Tom was recognized because of his passion

for training other global healthcare professionals, which not only inspired them, but gave them the advanced skills needed to improve and sustain the health of the most vulnerable in their own communities.”

The Humanitarian of the Year Award is a university-wide distinction from hundreds of alumni who are involved in volunteerism.

This award emanates from the A.T. Still University School of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, and honors those who have demonstrated exceptional dedication, enthusiasm, and leadership through volunteer service. Dr. DiDonna awarded Humanitarian of the Year Tom DiDonna, R.N., MSN, D.H.Sc., Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics director of education, was selected to receive the 2012-13 A.T. Still University of Health Sciences (ATSU) Alumni Humanitarian Award, in recognition of his contributions to his profession, community, and to his doctorial alma mater. The award was presented to Dr. DiDonna in February at the Arizona Campus.

Dr. DiDonna received his doctorate from ATSU in 2010. According to ATSU, Dr. DiDonna was awarded, “For his commitment to improving global health, and his volunteer services to The American Academy of Pediatrics by offering the Helping Babies Breathe program to resource poor countries for the last four years.” His work targets eliminating unnecessary deaths of the 10 S C O P E

Appel receives Leadership Award Bob Appel, recently retired CEO at MGH&FC, was honored in February with an individual Leadership Award by the local Economic Development Council (EDC) in recognition of his dedicated service and contributions to our community. “Bob’s leadership has left a clear mark on our community. We appreciate his 20-plus years of service as CEO at Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics, and his support was made clear by the boards he served on and the businesses and organizations he has helped grow,” said Matt Matoyoshi, EDC executive director.

Women’s Clinic open Wednesday evenings

MGH Mountain View Women’s Health (MVWH), is now open late on Wednesday evenings until 7 p.m. Daytime office hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays. MVWH is a full-service medical clinic that provides medical treatment for women of all ages with gynecological and obstetrical needs, and is staffed by three board-certified gynecologist/obstetricians Lystra B. Wilson-Celestine, M.D.; Nkem Nwosa, M.D.; and Alford N. Vassall, Jr., M.D. To schedule an appointment call (360) 426-0955.

The three classic signs of meningitis, found in nearly every patient over the age of 2, are: Severe headache (at least 90 percent of cases) Stiff neck (at least 85 percent) Fever and chills (at least 90 percent) Unfortunately, all of these symptoms occur with other illnesses as well and only 45 percent of patients have all three symptoms.

Other symptoms of meningitis include: cold or sore throat vomiting localized weakness, especially photophobia (fear of in the face bright lights) joint swelling or pain confusion a new rash that looks like a bruise seizures In about 25 percent of cases, bacterial meningitis develops very quickly – within 24 hours – from early symptoms to a life-threatening condition.

Unvaccinated children pose risk to all Parents who refused vaccinations for their children put them at significantly higher risk of getting whooping cough, according to a study of children 2 months to 18 years of age enrolled in the Kaiser Permanente Colorado health plan from 1996 to 2007. In this group, 11 percent of whooping cough cases could be attributed to vaccine refusal.

Unvaccinated children had a risk 23 times higher than other children.

Often fatal in infants, whooping cough is less of a danger than it was 50 years ago primarily because of childhood vaccination. Although incidence has risen since the 1980’s, it is still 97 percent lower than it was before the vaccine was introduced, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Campus Renewal Project

We are coming to a close

One last report…

as nearly all of the work for Mason General Hospital’s Campus Renewal Project will be completed the end of April 2013. Only a little work in the Emergency Department, north lobby, and a few corridors remain.

The new, open MRI was delivered March 2 without complications.

In order to get the MRI unit into the building, the contractor had to remove the south entrance’s sliding doors and dismantle a pair of doors leading down the north entrance connecting corridor.

An eight by ten foot removable wall was built to allow access to the MRI unit with minimal disturbance to operations – in the event it needed to be upgraded or replaced. The first scans will begin in May and patients will no longer have to go outside the building for an MRI. Along the new corridor that links north and south lobbies is the NEW Gift Shop. With three times the amount of space as the original gift shop, there will be ample room to display special items. Just east of the Gift Shop the Diagnostic Imaging (DI) waiting area is now open, with the same look and feel as the south lobby, but smaller.

About halfway down the main corridor you will see the beautiful courtyard just outside the new stairwell. The stairwell allows direct access to MGH’s Bistro in the Basement – a great place to relax in a comfortable booth and grab a bite to eat.

The Emergency Department (ED) is now accessed through the

north drive-up loop. There is additional parking available for emergency access, and a wider two-way drive loop. Inside the north entrance is the ED registration and waiting area. When the contractor completes the north lobby, ED registration, and connecting corridors in late April, it will mark the completion of the Campus Renewal Project. What a journey it has been – starting with the installation of a temporary ramp at the south entrance on April 1, 2011 – to the removal of construction barriers at the north entrance two years later!

Open MRI in May! Beginning in May, patients will begin using the new, state-of-the-art Open MRI unit. This unit is one of the many high-tech pieces of equipment installed during the Campus Renewal construction project.
