get moving A hula hoop helped Shari to “move” again Shari Harvey adds variety to her work-outs by doing the hula hoop.

As with any activity, adding variety can help to keep you active. Shari explained, “After I saw how swimming helped my back, I decided to add a little jogging. I started jogging while visiting my brother in San Antonio, and continued after I got home.” On the spur of the moment this last fall, she signed up for the “Rampage at the RAC,” a three-mile course of adventure – climbing over bales of hay, facing a water slide, jello pool, and a mud pit to name a few of the obstacles. “I did this because I was starting to feel better and knew I needed to have fun while I kept active.”

W

e know all too well that physical activity is good for the mind, body, and soul. But what do you do when you have chronic back pain that causes depression, and medications don’t help – when you can’t exercise like you used to, but you know better than to sink into self pity?

“I have always been active and had a healthy diet,” said Shari Harvey, a 33-year employee of Shelton Family Medicine, looking back at her life before her pain.

“And then, in addition to having to deal with the pain, there was the depression.”

She went on to describe how guilt also started to creep into her life. “Because of my faith, I felt guilty that I was allowing myself to get stuck in a ‘pity party’. So one day I decided I needed to take the initiative. I began by swimming before going to work.

“I have to say, I am not a fan of swimming. I don’t like being cold and wet but I knew that if I was going to change things, I had to do it,” she added.

Many times Shari tried to talk herself out of going, but she continued to forge ahead.

And ‘fun she has been having’ since early 2012. “I thought about learning to do the hula hoop – thinking it may be good for my back. So I looked on YouTube and learned how to do it, and it became so much fun!” said the mother of four grown children and grandmother of seven. In addition, Shari has added a Zumba class to her activity list, “I couldn’t stop smiling the whole time I was in that class! Zumba fits in with two of my goals for the New Year – increasing my strength, and laughing more.”

“I am careful and go slow, but just being active has helped tremendously with my depression, and towards feeling good.”

Shari’s advice to anyone experiencing what she went through is, “Be kind to yourself, choose healthy thoughts, but most importantly, don’t throw yourself a pity party – and get moving!”

New Year’s Baby

Start motherhood with a healthy mouth

Being pregnant affects your oral health. As your body changes during

pregnancy, you are more likely to get sore, puffy, red gums and tooth damage from frequent nausea or vomiting. Paying attention to your oral health is especially important at this time. Women with uncontrolled gum disease may be more likely to give birth to an underweight or pre-term baby.

We all have germs in our mouths. Dental disease is caused by bacteria that can be easily transmitted from mom to infant through saliva by sharing food or utensils.

Receiving dental care during pregnancy is safe and recommended. The good news is that by taking care of your mouth during pregnancy, you are not only helping yourself, you are also helping your baby from developing cavities as he/ she grows.

Tips for pregnant women Schedule a dentist appointment if your last dental visit took place more than 6 months ago, or if you are experiencing any oral health problems.

Brush teeth with fluoridated toothpaste twice a day, and floss once a day.

Limit foods containing sugar to mealtimes only.

Drink water or low-fat milk. Avoid carbonated beverages like soda.

Choose whole fruit rather than fruit juice.

For frequent nausea and vomiting Eat small amounts of nutritious food throughout the day.

Chew sugarless gum or gum with xylitol after meals.

Rinse your mouth with one tsp. of baking soda in one cup of water after vomiting, to neutralize acid.

Did you miss the Japanese Maple?

Well it’s back!

During the construction of the new surgery wing, the big, beautiful Japanese Maple tree that graced the south entrance of the hospital since 1968, was carefully removed and protected elsewhere on the hospital campus while the surgery wing was being built. This past December, when the time was right, it was replanted near its original location. This tree has been a strong icon of the community’s appreciation for our hospital. It is nice to see it back in its original place of honor, greeting our patients and visitors at the new Main Entrance.

anis Byrd, MGH Foundation’s pastpresident, presented Peg Stock Penney with the 2012 Flame Award during the Foundation’s Annual Fantasy Forest Gala and Auction in November. Each year, MGH Foundation honors an outstanding individual from the community who demonstrates strong support of the Foundation and of MGH&FC. Peg’s support and involvement in this community goes back many decades.

Most recently, she served as MGH Foundation chairperson of the annual Fantasy Forest event. She is a past Board member and past president of MGH Foundation, a charter member and past president of Sherwood Hospital Guild (and currently the only charter member still active in the Guild), past chairperson of Hospital District bonds, a charter member and past president of the

MGHF Arts Commission, and a member of Mason General Hospital Women’s Auxiliary.

Professionally, Peg worked in education for 34 years – first as a teacher and the last ten years as a principal in Pioneer School District. Honors she received included the South Sound (Grays Harbor, Lewis, Mason and Thurston Counties) Superintendent’s Outstanding Principal Award, and a Merit Award for Distinguished Service from the South Sound Elementary School Principals’ Association for serving four years as Liaison Representative for the Washington State Elementary School Principals’ Association.

Peg is now retired and recently married Jim Penney, DDS, also widowed. She was born and raised in Shelton, and

has been an endless servant to this community in many capacities.

After receiving the Flame Award, Peg stated, “I love this hospital, Peg Stock Penney and believe the care given to Ed (her late husband) for the years before his death in 2008 was a major factor in giving him the quality of life that allowed him to do the things he loved to do. I know they (MGH) saved his life the year his colon ruptured. Our hospital is one of the best things about living in Mason County.”

GH Foundation donated $151,800 of its proceeds to purchase new medical equipment and remodel the Physical Therapy Department at MGH. More than $40,400 of it was raised through the fund-an-item portion at the Fantasy Forest Gala and Auction to go toward the purchase of a new Skytron 3600 B UltraSlide surgical table. Also included was Treasures Thrift Store’s donation of $96,000 toward the purchase of the new Ultrasound Machine, and $15,400 came from the Foundation’s Endowment Fund.

The Endowment contribution was used to pay for part of the remodel of the Physical Therapy Department at MGH, which will help to increase access for pediatric patients in our community. ... Little Creek Casino Resort had its own “home run” when they purchased “Home Run Holiday Tree,” designed and decorated by Jennifer Fitchitt, director of medical staffing, and Jessica Gibbs, credentialing specialist. The baseball-themed tree was on display at the Casino just outside the Seven Inlets Spa. Items that accompanied the tree included a photo of San Francisco Giants pitcher Jacob Dunnington (son of Shelly Dunnington, MGH&FC administrative assistant to the CEO and CAO) and a jersey signed by Jacob and other top prospects from the San Francisco Giants farm system.

“Giving” briefs...

...For one week in December, staff, physicians, and administration at MGH&FC

collected more than 477 pounds of food plus cash donations for the Matlock Food Bank (MFB). Last year MGH&FC donated 235 pounds to MFB. “We are so pleased with how much everyone donated to this worthy cause,” said Jennifer Capps, MGH&FC chief development and communication officer. “We have two food drives a year, and each time the donations keep growing. Our Hospital and Clinics are so very giving to this community.” ...In December, during their annual Holiday Potluck, MGH&FC directors gathered together to donate toys to the local chapter of 40 et 8. The directors brought unwrapped toys to the meeting which were later taken downtown. 40 et 8 donated the toys to a local father to give to his eight year-old daughter, whose mother had recently died.

For the fourth straight year, Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics conducted a Hospital/Clinic and community-wide collection of Christmas gifts to donate to Mason County foster children through the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS). As a result, 52 Christmas “wish lists” were fulfilled. MGH Mountain View Women’s Health (MVWH), which normally has late hours on Tuesday or Thursday evenings, will be open late on Wednesday evenings only, beginning in March. Until the end of February, late appointments will continue to be scheduled on alternating Tuesday and Thursday evenings until 7 p.m. The usual day-time office hours at MVWH are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays.

Research shows that education is one of the strongest predictors of individual health. With that in mind, Mason Matters applied for and received a two-year grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Roadmaps to Health program. “By investing in a higher education for our community’s youth, we should yield savings in future healthcare costs,” said Kim Klint, Mason Matters executive director. Bob Appel to Retire, Eric Moll to be CEO After almost 21 years as CEO of Mason General Hospital and later it became Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics, Bob Appel announced his retirement effective March 31, 2013. “It has been a wonderful 20plus years. Thank you Bob Appel for allowing me the honor and the privilege to work with such a dedicated, capable, caring, and wonderful group of people over the years. Thanks again to all of you for your professionalism, hard work, dedication to our patients and community, and from me, thanks for your friendship over these many years. “Living Well with Diabetes” class in February or April With proper information, diabetes may be self-managed and brought under control to prevent serious complications and allow for a normal, healthy lifestyle.

MGH&FC teaches effective selfmanagement of this condition in a 2-day class entitled “Living Well With Diabetes.”

The next class is set for Tuesday and Wednesday, February 19 and 20 or April 16 and 17, 2013 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Skokomish and Washington Meeting Rooms at the Hospital. Taught by an expert team of MGH&FC health professionals, the class covers everything about the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes - its medications, proper meal planning, exercise, prevention and treatment of complications, stress management, living well, and engaging support people and a healthcare team.

Family members/significant others are also encouraged to attend the class, for the support they can provide to their loved ones with diabetes. Due to limited space, advanced registration for the class is required, so make your reservation early by calling Sue Barwick, R.N., certified

Free community CPR class in March MGH&FC’s next FREE Adult, Child, and Infant Basic Life Support CPR class, will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2013, from 6 to 9 p.m. at MGH&FC’s Learning Center, located next to McDonald’s on Olympic Highway North. Comfortable clothing is advised for the class, and a Spanish interpreter will be made available on request. Class size is limited and spaces fill up fast on a first-come, first-served basis. CPR/ First Aid class in April Due to a request from the community, MGH&FC now offers a combined CPR and First Aid class every other month for only $25 (exact cash or check only). The next class is set for Thursday evening, April 11, 2013 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Hospital’s Learning Center, located next to McDonald’s on Olympic Highway North. The CPR/First Aid class size is limited to 16 per class, and an early, nonrefundable registration fee of $25 (exact cash or check) is required. At the end of the class a “course completion card” will be available. The CPR/First Aid certificate class is open to the entire community, and a Spanish interpreter can be made available on request. Comfortable clothing is recommended for all participants, and books will be made available prior, during, and after the class. They may also be purchased for an additional $20.

Campus Renewal Project

End of construction in sight

In the home stretch! Work on the Campus Renewal Project

is scheduled for completion this Spring. It may be too early to say, however by the next issue of Scope (April), an opening date will be established for the new Emergency Department (ED) entrance. Opened to patients last month (January) were five additional emergency rooms. The new rooms are larger than the existing rooms, and outfitted with the latest medical technology to provide the most efficient care for those in need.

About half of the existing ED has been renovated and work is expected to be completed in all emergency rooms by midMarch. A lot needs to be coordinated to allow for the entire replacement of the existing nurses’ station – which will double the amount of space for ED staff. Down the hall, the Diagnostic Imaging (DI) Department renovation work is nearly completed.

Expected for completion mid-February, DI will receive a new read-room to better review patient images, and a “sub-wait” area where gowned patients can wait in privacy. All the areas under renovation in the center of the Hospital are nearing completion.

The current plan is to have all work south of the ED and north of the Main Entrance finished by end of March. Within that space the new MRI unit will be installed the first week of March, and will require a couple weeks to become operational. The

opening of the internal MRI will be a big moment for MGH&FC and patients. The new MRI will be open at the sides, giving ease to those that may be claustrophobic. No longer will patients have to go outside the building to have their scan done! The center courtyard stairwell, that was once accessible only from the basement, is now enclosed and accessible from the first floor and the basement. The windows that once looked out into the courtyard are being removed this month, allowing the contractor to finish the stairs in time for the Opening – sometime in April.
