Early cancer screenings do save lives We all have heard the message, “Early

cancer screenings save lives.” But how many of us heed the advice to schedule that yearly mammogram? A colonoscopy?

Pap smear? Prostate check? Whatever the reason, it is proven that early screenings do save lives, and if the results are negative for cancer – we are given additional peace of mind. The bonus is – these screenings can all be performed at Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics.

Breast cancer screening “Many women avoid mammograms because they are afraid the procedure might hurt or be uncomfortable,” said Karry Trout, patient navigator for MGH & FC. These women, however, really have nothing to fear. “Almost every woman who comes in for her first mammogram says, ‘Was that it? It’s not that bad.’ They fear the unknown.

Our technologists are all certified in mammography and can work with the patient to make sure the screening is as comfortable as possible.” In addition, MGH’s Diagnostic Imaging Department provides digital mammograms, which use lower dosages of radiation and take less time. “A digital mammogram is much more thorough,” added Trout.

“We know right away if the picture is good, and the radiologist can enlarge any areas of concern to see finer details.

Younger women, with denser breast tissue, are really at an advantage with digital mammograms.”

More than 2,300 women come to MGH for breast cancer screenings each

MGH & FC has

Help is available for women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. For qualifying patients, the Washington Breast, Cervical and Colon Health Program can cover the costs of cancer screenings and treatment; the Karen Hilburn Breast and Cervical Cancer Fund can assist in paying for other medical costs; and the Komen Patient Assistance Fund at Cancer Lifeline offers financial aid to help offset some of the living expenses during cancer treatment.

Breast cancer isn’t the only cancer that can be easily detected in time for successful, early treatment. General surgeons John Clayton, D.O., and Eldie Cruz, M.D., also perform colonoscopies, which, among other procedures, can help detect colorectal cancer.

Local nurse’s colonoscopy catches cancer in time Having a colonoscopy in time gave Rob Bennington, a critical care registered nurse, the chance to stop colon cancer in its tracks. “I work in healthcare and knew that, at my age, I was supposed to go and get a colonoscopy. I had put it off for a long time because it sounded really unpleasant and I felt I was too busy, anyway. Then, I had a friend who was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. The cancer ended up taking his life. It was at that point that I decided I needed to quit procrastinating and get a colonoscopy,” Bennington recalled. Little did he know his friend’s death would save his life.

As it happened, during the short procedure, local Gastroenterologist Harpreet Brar, M.D., detected colon cancer. “The colonoscopy itself was a breeze,” Bennington said. Dr. Brar notified him right away when he discovered

Early detection and monitoring aids in fight against prostate cancer At 67, William Prastka’s blood tests were steadily indicating a possibility of prostate cancer. Further tests, including six biopsies in August of 2005, showed the presence of prostate cancer. Reports rated its malignancy as “borderline serious.”

“Treatment options started with surgical removal of the prostate, or alternate freezing and heating,” Prastka said. Later on, treatment included several kinds of radiation, hormone therapy, or just ‘watchful waiting’ to see if nasty symptoms would occur.

I’ve since learned that the waiting game can be VERY risky,” Prastka added. He opted for surgery using “robotic laparoscopy” – a fairly successful procedure.

“They say that choosing radiation first forecloses the possibility of surgical options later on. The reverse order is more commonly practiced,” Prastka said.

In his case, the procedure was a success. He underwent surgery a few days after Thanksgiving in 2005 and returned home the very next day. continued on page 13…

Preventative screenings for cervical cancer saves lives

Early detection helped beat breast cancer – twice In 1995, shortly after Dawna Woodruff’s mother and sister were diagnosed with breast cancer, they urged Dawna to begin her annual screening. Woodruff underwent her first mammogram at MGH. She was in her early 40s at the time.

The mammogram and further testing led to a diagnosis of Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS) in her right breast. Her treatment consisted of a lumpectomy followed by six weeks of radiation treatment. “After that I received a clean bill of health – the cancer was gone,” Woodruff recalled.

Woodruff remained cancer-free for 15 years, but in 2010 her annual mammogram again showed suspicious tissue in the same breast. Her follow-up lumpectomy showed the DCIS had returned.

Misti Webb knows, first-hand, the importance of preventative measures. She had already lost a sister and an aunt to cervical cancer before she, too, was diagnosed with the disease. Her mother was also diagnosed with cervical cancer, but both she and her mother caught the disease early enough to effectively treat it.

Webb was diagnosed with cervical cancer in August 2010, after she experienced abdominal pain, along with heavy and painful menstrual cycles. Given the option of radiation or radiation and chemotherapy combined, she chose radiation alone. Her treatment lasted six weeks and proved to be very effective. “So far, I have not had any cancer cells come back,” she said. About a year after her treatment, Webb fully recovered, though she still has regular check-ups.

get moving Himlie enjoys a healthier lifestyle after heart surgery, diabetes As with many people, getting into shape was something Jay

Himlie thought he ‘needed to think about doing’. “I knew I was overweight,” he said. In Himlie’s case, the decision happened virtually overnight.

One morning in June of 2011 he woke up with chest pains, and the next day had to have two stents placed in his heart. Himlie learned he had a 90 percent blockage in one artery and a 70 percent blockage in another.

“The doctor said it was time to start working on all those things he’d been ‘beating me up over’. I told him I had kind of figured that out,” Himlie recalled. Additionally, during his follow up exams, Himlie was diagnosed with Type II diabetes.

Starting over with exercise Once his cardiologist gave him permission to start exercising again – about six weeks after the stents were placed in his heart – Himlie began using his treadmill much more regularly and started lifting some light weights. He also started getting outside and working on clearing and landscaping his property.

Himlie’s children have convinced him and his wife, Connie, to compete in a couple of five-kilometer races. “I walk the races, and I am not in contention to win,” Himlie said. “But you do push yourself a little harder around really serious competitors.”

Himlie also enjoys photography, and has started exploring more of the outdoors to take pictures. He recently hiked eight miles of trails around Mt. St. Helens while photographing scenery.

And a healthy eating makeover Along with more exercise, Himlie started eating healthier as soon as he got home from the hospital. “The junk food and soda went away cold turkey. With the diabetes diagnosis a month later, I had to start seriously watching the sugar and carb content of foods, which turned out to be a blessing in helping with weight loss,” Himlie said. “I’ve found that a lot of foods I had never considered eating actually taste pretty good.”

As a result, Himlie dropped 30 pounds during the first couple of months on his new workout and nutritional routine. By the end of the year, he had managed to lose a total of 90 pounds.

Being in better shape is paying off beyond the scale, too. “I can work outside for most of the day instead of just an hour or two.

People I haven’t seen for a while say they hardly recognize me,” Himlie said.

oving to the Pacific Northwest last July to begin his practice as a general surgeon at Mason General Hospital Surgery Clinic was a welcome change for John Clayton, D.O. and his wife.

After having spent the previous five years in Detroit, Michigan, where Dr. Clayton completed his surgical internship and residency at Garden City Hospital, the couple are really appreciating the milder winters and the pretty scenery this area has to offer. “We like being close to the water, lakes, and trees,” Clayton said.

A graduate of the University of Oklahoma and Kansas City University of Medicine and Bioscience, Dr. Clayton still considers Oklahoma “home.” Being a big fan of the Oklahoma Sooners, Dr. Clayton said he watches “nearly every sport.” He also likes playing golf. “I’m very excited that college football is starting up,” he added.

Dr. Clayton now specializes in performing breast cancer surgery, colonoscopies and upper endoscopies to investigate potential abdominal problems. He values the preventive aspect in all of these procedures – especially the ones involving breast cancer. As with many diseases, early detection of breast cancer provides a good chance of successfully curing it, thanks to more and more available treatment options.

He also loves spending time with his year-old son. “When I’m not at work, I’m basically at home with him,” Dr. Clayton said. He and his wife are glad to have met some other young families in this

In fact, it was while traveling on missions during high school that he met some medical missionaries who inspired him to choose a medical career so he could use his skills in overseas mission work.

“It’s true that the majority of women are not going to develop breast cancer,” he

said. “Nevertheless, as with most other cancers, the chances of developing breast cancer depend on a variety of risk factors, including family history”. Dr. Clayton strongly encourages all women to know if breast cancer runs in their family and to examine their own breasts on a monthly basis. In particular, he said women should become familiar with their breast tissue, in order to recognize and report any suspicious changes to their healthcare providers.

Early detection is crucial in catching the disease in time to successfully treat it.

“Very frequently”, he said, “breast cancer is a disease that can be cured by surgery combined with post-operative treatments from an oncologist.” Though other treatments are often involved as well, Dr. Clayton really appreciates being able to aid people in recovering from cancer through surgery.

“The mainstay with breast cancer treatment is still surgery, and so it’s nice to be able to provide that,” he said.

& FC has received the prestigious, “Most Wired” Hospital award, this year competing with 1,570 hospitals surveyed across the nation in information systems capability. The Hospitals & Health Networks (H&HN) Most Wired Survey identified MGH & FC as one of 215 hospitals in the country that were given this designation. MGH received the “Most Wired”- Rural Hospital award in 2008 and 2009, and in 2010 it was reclassified to be included in not just rural, but all hospitals, nationwide. Every year since – 2010, 2011, and now 2012 – it has received the Most Wired Hospital award for information technology (IT) that implements systems to ensure quality and improve efficiency in the delivery of patient care.

The Campus Renewal Construction Project at MGH includes a new dining room and remodel of the Cafeteria. Detecting breast cancer at its earliest stages allows for more treatment options and provides the best chance of successfully curing it in time. By performing monthly self breast exams, recognizing any suspicious changes, and undergoing regular clinical breast exams and mammograms as recommended for women at certain ages.

Women who smoke, have many children, use birth control pills for a long time, or have a weakened immune system are at a greater risk of developing cervical cancer, according to WebMD. com. The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 12,170 women will be diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer this year. A Pap screening is an effective way to detect the possibility of developing cervical cancer. To prevent cervical cancer, women should undergo regular Pap screenings starting at age 21. Bobbie Paquette, a receptionist at Mountain View Women’s Health, began working for MGH 12 years ago at the North Mason Medical Clinic (NMMC) in Belfair. When NMMC closed she went to work at the Hospital, and within a year she became a receptionist at Mountain View Women’s Health. “I enjoy the people I come into contact with,” she said, in describing what she likes best about her job. “And the staff is more like family, which makes it nice to work here.” As a receptionist, Bobbie checks in patients and schedules appointments.

Welcome new pediatrician

Rose Ann Rayos, M.D., joined the medical staff at Oakland Bay Pediatrics and Mason General Hospital in July 2012. She graduated with a medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas Royal and Pontifical Catholic University of the Philippines in 2006, and completed her residency at Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, NJ. Dr. Rayos was a recipient of the Cygnet Pediatric Research Award during her residency for her paper entitled, “Oral Health Assessment of Children Ages One to Five Years at Monmouth Family Health Center Pediatric Clinic in Long Branch, New Jersey: A Prospective Study”. She has a particular interest in pediatric oral health,

and plans to continue to educate both parents and children to prevent future oral diseases by promoting positive behavior. Some of her other interests include neonatal resuscitation, pediatric dermatology, and adolescent health. Dr. Rayos is now accepting new patients.

MVWH extends hours for evening appointments Mountain View Women’s Health (MVWH) has added evening hours to accommodate patients who need care after 5 p.m. Beginning in September, MVWH now remains open one evening a week until 7 p.m. The usual office hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays. The new hours rotate on Tuesdays one week and Thursdays the next, until 7 p.m.

MVWH is a full-service medical facility that provides treatment for women of all ages with gynecological and obstetrical needs, including general and high-risk obstetrical care, well-woman care, family planning, peri-menopausal/ menopausal care, gynecological surgery, treatment for urinary incontinence, and UTIs. There are three board-certified gynecologist/obstetricians on staff – Lystra B. Wilson-Celestine, M.D.; Nkem Nwosa, M.D.; and Alford N. Classes/Support Groups CPR Free Community CPR class in Nov. MGH & FC is offering another FREE Adult, Child, and Infant Basic Life Support CPR class on Thursday, November 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. in MGH & FC’s Learning Center, located next to McDonald’s on Olympic Highway North. The class is open to the entire community, and participants are advised to wear comfortable clothing.

Diabetes “Living Well with Diatetes” class in Dec. A diagnosis of diabetes does not mean that it has to take over your life! Plan to attend MGH & FC’s next two-day class entitled “Living Well With Diabetes.” The two consecutive afternoon sessions will be on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 4 and 5th from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Skokomish/Washington Meeting Rooms at MGH. Due to limited space, advanced registration is required.

“Sleep: Nuts & Bolts” October topic for Shelton and Allyn Diabetes Support Group Meetings. Sleep disorders such as apnea and snoring problems are of particular concern to those with diabetes, and this will be the subject of the October MGH Shelton and Allyn Diabetes Support Group meetings.

The Shelton meeting is set for Thursday, April 18 from 1 to 2 p.m. in the new PUD Meeting Room at 2621 E John’s Prairie Road, Shelton; and the Allyn meeting is on Thursday October 25 from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Port of Allyn building’s downstairs meeting room.

The Shelton and Allyn Diabetes Support Groups, affiliated with the American Diabetes Association, meet one Thursday of every month from September to June.

Campus Renewal Project Phase II construction begins

Project has been under way for over a month now, since the opening of the new Surgery Wing and Main Entrance. The north entrance off Mountain View Drive is now closed for construction of a new Emergency Department entrance that will look very similar (but smaller) to the newly-opened south Main Entrance.

Outside there will be a drop off area and drive-up canopy, as well as additional parking for Emergency Department (ED) patients only.

The ED will remain open during construction of Phase II. One of the biggest transitions for patients is accessing the ED through

the ambulance entrance, that can be seen from 13th Street. Just outside the ED walls renovation of the north lobby is under way.

Walls are being torn down, ceilings and floors are being removed, and new mechanical and electrical systems are being installed both for the new space and to keep existing building services functional. The ED expansion will include six new emergency rooms – four will be standard rooms, one will be an isolation room, and one will be an OB/GYN room.

Inside the old Surgery Department all the operating rooms have been demolished to make way for the new MRI unit, conference rooms, and Gift Shop.

Citing statistics from www.prostatewashington. org, Prastka said one in six men will develop prostate cancer, a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer every three minutes, and that a ‘family history’ of the disease significantly increases the risks of developing it. Regular screening and early detection can help improve the chances of successfully curing prostate cancer.

Common symptoms of seriously-advanced

prostate cancer include frequent and painful urination; difficulty urinating; lingering pain in back, hips, or pelvis; and blood in urine.

Prastka is an advocate for Prostate Cancer Support Groups, and encourages men and their wives to seek information. “You shouldn’t go through this alone,” he said.

Rob Bennington continued from page 3… the colon cancer. Following the diagnosis, Dr. Cruz removed the cancer and the surrounding lymph nodes during surgery. The biopsies on everything around the cancer turned out fine – it was caught early enough.

Colon cancer is usually symptomfree until the advanced stages. A colonoscopy is recommended for everyone over the age of 50.
