healthy you When cooking equals community outreach Executive Chef John Cruse is cooking up more than meals these days. He’s also been working on cultivating healthy community relationships between local businesses and schools and MGH & FC. Since 1997, he has participated with local farms and companies, including Dee’s Tea, Oakland Bay Organics and Olympic Bakery, to provide fresher ingredients to serve in Mason General Hospital’s cafeteria.

“We have found that we receive superior goods from our local vendors. It keeps that sector of our community supported by MGH & FC. We do our best to incorporate them into our Culinary and Nutrition business plan while reducing our carbon footprint,” Cruse noted.

MGH’s Executive Chef John Cruse is using his role as Director of Culinary and Nutrition Services for MGH & FC to make a difference in the community.

The Hospital isn’t the only place Cruse is concerned about raising the nutritional bar. Cruse is also coordinating with Shelton School District to help get the Farm-to -School program off the ground and bring better nutrition to school meals. “We will be working with a group of local farmers to help grow fresh produce and reduce the amount of manufactured, processed foods being served in our schools,” Cruse said.

Plus, his kitchen is working on contributing compostable materials to the Hospital’s new Hope Garden, which benefits the community, ecologically.

Experiencing this sense of care and concern for the local community is part of what brought Cruse, a world-class and former Hilton corporate chef, to Mason County. “The people here in Shelton make this town what it really is. I have been all around this state and the people here truly care about one another.

Get moving!

Fitting exercise into a busy routine pays off in the long run When Gail Gray of Shelton decided it was time to get back into shape, she and her husband started by walking more, as well as changing their diet. They went so far as to complete the Seattle Half Marathon.

Even after becoming a working mother Gail hasn’t let her busy schedule slow her down. She has managed to keep all of her “baby weight” off simply by walking – often pushing her daughter in a jogging stroller. Not only does this burn calories, the young family enjoys the activity together. Weather permitting, Gail walks to her office and home for lunch.

“By afternoon, it’s kind of nice to realize I’ve already walked two miles today,” Gail concludes. Working out also gives Gail more energy.

Establishing healthy habits now may also save medical costs down the road.

According to WebMD, children who learn to make healthy lifestyle choices are likely to grow up with lower blood cholesterol levels and lower their risk of developing heart disease as adults.

Even on a limited budget, there are a number of free exercise options at several local parks and trails for families, such as MCRA ball fields, the “Huff and Puff” exercise trail (near Shelton High School), and the “Imagination Station” at Kneeland Park. Toward a healthier future

By Lydia Buchheit RN, BSN, Mason County Public Health Community Health Manager The Mason County ACHIEVE communities team traveled to Baltimore, Maryland this past June for a week-long training on how to create and promote policies and environmental conditions that make healthy behaviors an easier choice for all our residents. “I’m proud to be part of a team that recognizes Mason County needs to improve the health of many of our citizens. I am very confident that history will mark this as the time the community came together to emphasize the importance of daily exercise and proper nutrition in supporting a long, healthy lifestyle,” stated team member, Scott Hilburn, Mason County Public Hospital District No.1 commissioner.

Institute attendees learned “it’s an epidemic of physical inactivity and poor nutrition that make up two of the three biggest contributors of skyrocketing healthcare costs.”

This model has proven successful in communities across America for change in tobacco usage, child safety restraints, seat belt usage, and recycling, is being applied to this national epidemic, which contributes to claiming 365,000 lives a year. The ideal is to create a community where healthy foods are accessible and affordable, plus an environment where everyone is more active.

Protect yourself from lead poisoning If you live in a house built before 1978, you and your children are at increased risk of lead poisoning from indoor and outdoor paint and plumbing. Children under six are particularly vulnerable to effects, including impairments in mental and physical development.

You can take some simple measures to protect yourself and your children: Wash your children’s hands before meals and after outdoor play.

Clean dusty surfaces of floors and windowsills frequently with a damp cloth.

If you have older plumbing, run cold water for at least a minute before drinking and don’t use hot tap water for cooking or to make baby formula.

When doing renovations, don’t attempt to remove lead paint by sanding or using an open-flame torch. If the old paint is tight without many chips, paint over it.

On June 24, MGH Foundation hosted

its 17th Annual Quality Care Open Golf Tournament at Lakeland Village Golf Course in Allyn. More than $55,000 was raised and will be used to support the purchase of medical equipment for the laboratory, physical therapy, and surgery departments. The Foundation will also make a contribution to its Endowment Fund as a result of this year’s successful Tournament. This success would not have been possible had it not been for the Title Sponsor, Falcon Financial Inc., and all the other sponsors for their continued support. An all-around good time was had by all Fun Run runners and walkers.

Fun Run nets $6,000-plus The annual Goldsborough Creek Fun Run/Walk (2- and 7-mile run or walk) was held in June as a part of the Forest Festival activities. There were more than 310 participants – from all over the area. Centennial Guild, an affiliate of MGH Foundation organized the event, with all proceeds going to MGH & FC. This year’s event, sponsored by Regence BlueShield, netted more than $6,000.

In addition to Title Sponsor, Regence BlueShield, other sponsors included: Armstrong & Armstrong Christmas Trees; Gillis Auto Center; Hiawatha Evergreens; Lynch Creek Farm; McCarty & Associates, “a marketing firm;” Simpson Lumber Company; Don Small and Sons, Oil Distributors; and South Sound Radiology.

In last year’s event the Guild raised $5,000 to go toward the purchase of the new Open MRI. Relay for Life team The Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics Relay For Life team raised more than $6,000 for the American Cancer Society at this year’s local event held in June. The theme was “Entertaining for a Cure,” and the MGH & FC team chose to be the M*A*S*H unit. The MGH & FC Relay For Life team is headed by team co-captains, Cindy Mortensen, Merry Antrim, and Monica Bates. Team members were from a variety of departments including nursing, business office, health information mgt., dietary, nursing education, environmental services, patient resources, and materials.

Grant from Komen The Puget Sound Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has awarded a $58,302 grant to MGH & FC for community breast cancer education and patient support. The grant from Komen for the Cure will support the “Early Detection and Patient Navigation” project, an initiative that provides women in Mason County with breast cancer awareness, outreach, and screening services. It also includes a survivor support network that will improve outcomes for rural Mason women by establishing an effective patient navigation service. The project will provide education, screening, and patient navigation services to women in Mason County.

Fantasy Forest, November 15-19, 2011 Fantasy Forest is an annual event held in November by the Mason General Hospital Foundation (MGHF). This weeklong festival raises money each year to buy equipment for Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics. November may seem like a long way off, but it’s not too early to put this festive event on your calendars and to make your reservations.

Fantasy Forest Kicks Off on Tuesday, November 15 with the Fantasy Laugh Factory which starts with cocktails at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. This is an evening of comedy, featuring comedian and Ventriloquist Justin Ver Burg, good food, and lots of fun and laughter, spiced with our muchenjoyed Balloon Extravaganza – burst a balloon, everyone wins! Friday Evening, November 18, highlights the Dance Fever Festival which runs from 7 to 11 p.m., featuring hearty appetizers, a raffle, gift shop, nohost bar*, and, of course, great dancing for all. Sherry Curtis, BA, education associate at MGH & FC (right) gave blood pressure checks during the Women’s Health Event. Almost a third of the women who had their blood pressure taken were diagnosed with hypertension.

Annual Women’s Health Event another success MGH Diagnostic Imaging Department’s Annual Women’s Health Event held in May and sponsored by the Karen Hilburn Breast & Cervical Cancer Fund (KHBCCF) was another great success. According to the organizer of the event, Karry Trout, RT (R)(M), 27 women received free or reduced-cost screening mammograms – 11 more than in the 2010 Event. The mammograms were available to women who were uninsured or underinsured, with financial assistance provided by KHBCCF. Diabetes and cardiac testing, as well as blood pressure checks, were also part of the day’s events. The next Women’s Health Event is set for October 15, 2011 at MGH. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Do you get enough whole grains?

More than 60 percent of Americans think they’re eating enough whole grains, but only five percent actually get the three daily servings recommended, according to a study sponsored by General Mills. One problem is that terms such as “enriched flour,” “multigrain,” “organic” and “100 percent wheat” (as opposed to “100 percent whole wheat”) are widely believed to indicate a whole grain product when in fact, they do not.

Tea, coffee may be good for liver A review of 10 observational and interventional studies from China, Japan and the United States found that increased consumption of green tea was associated with a lower risk of liver disease. An earlier study found a correlation between increased consumption of coffee and a reduced risk of liver cancer.

The authors admitted the weakness of questionnaire-based studies and said that “more rigorous studies such as double-blinded randomized controlled trials in different countries are needed.”

Healthcare quality programs In June, representatives from The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), the nation’s premier healthcare quality organization, visited MGH to learn more about its successful Diabetes Wellness Center and Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) Services programs. These two departments strive to reduce the re-admission of patients with associated chronic illnesses. “It is wonderful to see staff recognized for the great work they have done.

Certainly gaining recognition from IHI is a great compliment of their work,” said Bob Appel, CEO of Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics.

Carbon monoxide may not smell Most Americans are used to the rotten egg smell that occurs when there is a natural gas leak coming from the kitchen range or other household appliances. Both natural gas and propane are odorless, however, and producers add the unpleasant smell of mercaptan so that consumers can more easily spot a leak.

It’s important to note that incomplete combustion from a wood-burning stove or kerosene heater will emit carbon monoxide that will not be detected by an unpleasant odor.

Mason General Hospital was recently given a Level II Cardiac designation and Level III Stroke Center designation by the Washington State Department of Health. This means that MGH proactively developed an internal hospital system that promotes quality care which begins with EMS notifying MGH of a stroke or cardiac patient’s arrival. Once EMS has alerted MGH of the impending arrival, the Hospital mobilizes the “Stroke or Cardiac Team,” which consists of a group of physicians and RNs who prepare to immediately assess and treat the patient – to support the best possible outcome.

Several MGH physicians and staff members collaborated with Providence St. Peter Hospital and local EMS personnel to develop a model for early stroke and cardiac diagnosis and treatment, which allows care to be initiated at the 911 call. The work included developing a transfer policy that provides for timely transfer to the next level of care. For their outstanding work in this, MGH has gained statewide recognition. Those who worked closely on the Stroke and Cardiac designations were: Dona Kravis, R.N., director of the Emergency Department; Dean Gushee, M.D., ER medical director; Joseph Hoffman, M.D., ER physician and EMS medical physician director (MPD); and Sabrina Lyons, R.N., clinical coordinator for the Emergency Department.

Work to install water retention and infiltration ponds at the gravel parking lot area is complete, and the grass is growing. Work at the new surgical wing is progressing ahead of schedule, and construction at the lower east lot for the new generator building has begun.

The concrete slab for the new surgical wing is complete and concrete tilt-up panels will be constructed throughout August.

Expect to see walls erected by the end of August. Installation of underground mechanical and electrical infrastructure at the new generator building will be complete this month and CMU walls should be complete the first week of September.

Subcontractor bidding for the Campus Renewal Capital Project were received last month except for landscaping, irrigation, and site concrete work. Due to cost savings generated by favorable bids, many of the additional exterior items will be included as part of this project. Items like additional north entrance parking (now complete), installation of a new asphalt south parking lot where gravel exists today, resurfacing the existing south parking lot, and several finish upgrades inside the Hospital.

Work inside MGH began last month. Updating of existing patient areas will extend well into the spring of 2012, with major interior remodels starting a year from now.

Open MRI unit Our Construction and Campus Renewal project is making room for a new, state-of-the-art Open MRI unit. Many new pieces of high tech medical equipment will be installed as a result of the construction, and the Panorama High Field Open MRI is at the top of the list.

The Gift Shop funds scholarships for students and employees who are pursuing careers in medically-related fields. Proceeds from The Gift Shop have donated $50,000 in the last ten years for scholarships alone.

news Employee focus Konrad Schuster works in the maintenance department for MGH & FC and has the responsibilities of preventative maintenance and repairs at Mason General Hospital and its eight clinics. “I enjoy the variety this job offers, and every day has a different challenge. The staff at the Clinics is very supportive in helping us do to our job. All of us on the maintenance crew work together to provide the best service possible,” he said. Konrad started working at MGH & FC four and a half years ago, after working for Simpson, ITT Rayonier, and Thurston County.

Gretchen Schodde – to receive the Foundation’s 2011 American Business Women’s Award. Every year, the MGHF honors three outstanding business women who are or were successful in their occupations, work or have worked in Mason County, and are active as volunteers in their community. These women will be honored at the 14th annual American Business Women’s Day Luncheon on Friday, September 16, 2011 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Shelton Yacht Club. Barbara Dunbar has been the administrative public affairs and human resources assistant at Green Diamond Resource Company since 2002. She moved to Shelton in 1964, graduating from Irene S. Reed High School in 1971. She then graduated from Central Washington State College with a Business Administration degree in 1975. Starting as a secretary, she worked her way up to a position as a senior loan officer for Washington State Employees Credit Union before accepting a position as senior secretary for Simpson Timber Company in 1979.

Deb Nielsen has served as the Executive Director of the Mason County Homeless Shelter since 2005, because she wanted to take part in helping the world. “It has been the most challenging job I have ever had, and demands every professional and personal talent I have acquired over the past 42 years, but the rewards outweigh the demands,” she said.

Deb added, “I am privileged to work with people in my own organization and in the community who give as a way of life, and who tirelessly contribute their time and talents to see others reach their full potential.”

Gretchen Schodde, MN, ARNP, FNP- BC, is the founder and Executive Director of Harmony Hill Retreat Center. She grew up on a large dairy farm near Buckley and has had a lifelong commitment to rural health and wellness. Harmony Hill is most known for its cancer support programs started in 1994. Gretchen is a family nurse practitioner, a former University of Washington assistant professor, and one of the first nurse practitioners in the State. She volunteered for the Union Fire Department, helped start Mason County Drug and Alcohol Prevention program, and serves on the MGH & FC ethics committee.
