Campus Renewal Project

Coming in 2013–­­ Open MRI Unit

Our Construction and Campus Renewal project is making room for a new stateof-the-art Open MRI unit.

Many new pieces of high tech medical equipment will be installed as a result of the construction, and a Panorama High Field Open MRI is at the top of the list.

The south entrance to Mason General Hospital has been demolished! In preparation for the new surgical wing, the contractor has closed the south entrance and relocated a temporary employee entrance to the southeast administration wing. With the water retention and infiltration ponds excavated, the civil contractor will focus on installing infrastructure for drainage, the new surgical wing, and a new generator building at the lower east parking lot.

Foundations for the new surgical wing are underway. By the end of June, the perimeter concrete foundation of the new building and south lobby will be complete and the contractor will get ready to pour concrete slabs. The new building walls will be concrete tilt-up panels.

Tilt-up panels are constructed much like pouring a concrete slab on the ground, and then a crane is used to tilt the walls into place. Subcontractor bidding for the Campus Renewal Project is nearly complete and many of the bids are coming in under budget. With favorable bids, MGH will be able to provide much of the work needed to create an updated campus for patients, staff, and visitors to enjoy for years to come.

Inside MGH, a temporary barrier was installed where the south entrance used to be located. This barrier separates the Hospital from demolition needing to be completed for the new south lobby. The barrier will remain in place until August of 2012. Other than some mechanical and electrical work, no additional construction is anticipated to start inside MGH until later this summer.

You’re in Good Hands with Dr. Davis

Frederick J. Davis, M.D., board-certified in orthopedic surgery.

As a young resident in orthopedic surgery, Frederick

J. Davis, M.D., board-certified in orthopedic surgery, heard a mentor once say, “Orthopedic surgery is only one course in the banquet of life.”

That quote went on to help mold the life of Dr. Davis. Today he is an accomplished and most sought-after orthopedic surgeon who works very hard, and plays just as hard, too.

Because of this, some would call him a “Renaissance Man” – a person who has a wide range of accomplishments and intellectual interests. To define that further, Dr. Davis’ partial list of interests and accomplishments include – riding his Harley Davidson “Ultra Classic”; sailing a 53-foot yacht from Puget Sound to the Hawaiian Islands and back; playing in the warm-up band for “Gordon Lightfoot”; and being married to his wife, Dottie for 43 years. In addition, Dr. Davis is an accomplished and highly-skilled orthopedic surgeon who shows great compassion, confidence, and skill with every patient he encounters, not to mention his love and deep commitment to orthopedics.

It is easy to tell Dr. Davis enjoys his work. A passion for medicine and for people oozes out of him. His illustrative career started in 1968 as a resident at the University of Washington, where he experienced working in many types of orthopedic environments including Harbor View Medical Center, the Sports Medicine Department at UW, Seattle VA Medical Center, and Swedish Medical Center.

“I was one of the first surgeons to ‘explore’ the use of arthroscopy,” he fondly remembers. “It was only experimental at the time, but I had a chance to use it and see its potential.” As Dr. Davis described this early encounter his smile grew, and his account was scholarly, but in a way a layman could understand. “At first, no one wanted to even go there. It was not an accepted procedure. Now it is used extensively in almost all types of surgeries,” he added.

Dr. Davis joined MGH Shelton Orthopedics, a part of Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics, last summer and has been championed to build an impressive team of orthopedic surgeons at the Clinic. Since his arrival, Dr. Davis has added two new specialists, and hopes to add two more in the next 18 months. Ghalib Husseini, M.D., boardcertified in orthopedics and in hand surgery joined the medical staff at MGH in May, on a part time basis, as a highly-trained hand surgeon.

In August, Stephen Ou, M.D., will join the active medical staff as a shoulder specialist at MGH Shelton Orthopedics.

The addition of these new surgeons is a result of the new surgery wing that will be operational, if all goes as planned, in 2013.

When Your Ankles Start to Creak Osteoarthritis does not occur as frequently in the ankles as it does in the knees and hips. When it does, it is usually the result of prior injury – repeated ankle sprains or a very severe one. Relief can usually be gained through: • activity modification – avoiding running, jumping and other activities that put high impact on the heel and ankle; • shoes or orthotic inserts to change biomechanical stresses that cause pain; • a brace to help hold the joint in position; and • anti-inflammatory medications, either taken orally or injected into the site.

Ankle fusion surgery, removing the worn portion of the joint and then permanently joining the bones together, is recommended only for severe cases.

Classes/Support Groups “Living Well with Diabetes” June Class With the rise in new cases of diabetes being diagnosed, Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics advises that everyone have blood glucose testing done regularly.

It often comes as a complete surprise to people whose test results indicate diabetes, since early symptoms often go unnoticed.

For those already diagnosed with diabetes, proper self-management of the condition and professional support can help them lead a normal, active life; and a lot can be done to slow the advancement of the condition and keep diabetes under control. If diabetes is a part of your life, plan to attend MGH&FC’s next three-day session entitled, “Living Well With Diabetes”.

The class will be held on three consecutive evenings – Tuesday to Thursday, June 14 through 16th, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Hospital in the Ellinor Room. The class is taught by an expert team of healthcare providers at MGH&FC, who will cover the diagnosis of diabetes, diabetes medications, proper meal planning, exercise, prevention and treatment of complications, stress management, living with diabetes, and the use of support people and a healthcare team.

Studies show that effective self-management of diabetes is beneficial for the patient and their family. Due to space limitations, advanced registration is required. Diabetes education is a covered service under most insurance plans. MGH&FC Free Community CPR Class Offered in June - Would you recognize the symptoms of a heart attack or stroke, and know what to do about it? Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics, in partnership with the community, has a vision for saving lives, and is again offering a FREE Adult, Child, and Infant Basic Life Support CPR class, to be held on Thursday, June 9, 2011 from 6 to 9 p.m. in MGH&FC’s Learning Center, located next to McDonald’s on Olympic Highway North. The class is open to all members of the community, and will demonstrate the proper technique for adult, child, and infant CPR, as well as review the symptoms of heart attack and stroke.

Everyone attending the class is asked to wear comfortable clothes, and a Spanish interpreter will be made available on request.

Pre-registration for the class is required, as class size is limited, so please make your reservations by Friday, June 3 by calling MGH&FC’s Learning Center at (360) 4273609. This is not a First Aid class.

Employee Focus

Live, Learn, Work at MGH Sandy Sipe, an environmental services technician at Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics, began working at MGH&FC ten years ago, after caring for quadriplegics in a longterm care facility. “I enjoy Sandy Sipe the people I work with at MGH,” said Sandy. “We are a cohesive unit, and we get along great. When things get hectic, we really pull together as a team.” Sandy’s shift requires her to work independently, and without direct supervision. “I come in immediately and assess what needs to be done – patient rooms, ER rooms, you name it – and I get right to work, as there is always a variety of jobs to be done.”

MGH&FC offers several opportunities to encourage wellness, one of which is the Goldsborough Creek Fun Run and Walk, hosted by Centennial Guild, an affiliate of Mason General Hospital Foundation. Another is the HOPE Garden, which is a school and community vegetable garden on MGH&FC grounds that nourishes residents and students through access to fresh produce, social activities, and educational opportunities. “Throughout the year, Mason General also organizes pedometer-walking contests, and their Biggest Loser weight-loss contest, among a number of programs and community classes it offers to promote healthy lifestyles,” said Candy Mattson, registered dietitian at MGH. “Many Hospital employees also take advantage of their lunch break to go for a walk,” she added.

According to healthdiscovery.net, a person weighing 150 pounds could burn 225 calories simply by walking a mile and a half in 20 minutes. If squeezing this much time into a busy schedule sounds challenging, whenever possible try walking to errands instead of driving or taking a bus, or parking your vehicle farther away in parking lots.

But how do you encourage children to enjoy exercising? According to WebMD, Richard Parr, EdD, a professor in the Department of Health Promotion and Rehabilitation at Central Michigan University recommends making physical activity part of your family’s everyday routine. His tips include buying toys and gifts that promote physical activity; assigning calorie-burning household chores such as yard work and washing the car; encouraging them to find jobs involving exercise, such as lawn services or bicycle messaging; celebrating special occasions with fun physical activity, or making weekend plans involving hiking, swimming, or kite-flying.

Local parks offer opportunities for family activities at facilities such as MCRA ball fields, the “Huff and Puff” exercise trail (near Shelton High School), and the “Imagination Station” at Kneeland Park – all in Shelton. HOPE Garden is Ready to Grow

Despite a cold spring with lots of rain, Mason General

Hospital & Family of Clinics’ joint project with Mason Matters, called “HOPE Garden,” culminated with a mid-May celebration and ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Donors and workers were all invited to the event while a Community Open House was held the end of May. The HOPE (Hands-On Personal Empowerment) Garden project is a school and community green space located on Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics (MGH&FC) grounds that nourishes residents and students through access to fresh produce, social activities, and educational opportunities. Sponsored by MGH&FC, and established in 2010, HOPE Garden launched its pilot program this year. Students from Head Start, Olympic Middle School, Choice, and Youth ‘N Action constructed the space and planted the beds while applying math, science, and literacy skills. The garden also has sixteen community members who rent annual plots in order to bring their healthy bounty home, lowering their grocery bills and increasing their intake of vegetables.

HOPE Garden began with a collective group decision by the Community Health Task Force to target obesity, diabetes, and chronic disease through preventive measures such as diet change and increased physical activity. HOPE was made possible by the generosity of the Shelton community, generating more than $10,000 in monetary and in-kind donations.

Making Healthy Trail Mix Processed trail mix may look healthy, but if you check the label, it often includes hidden salt and sugars. Make your own trail mix, and you can be sure it’s chock full of your favorite fresh and healthy ingredients. Take some along on your next hiking trip, or keep some on hand for a healthy snack. Don’t forget to take a bottle of water on your hike, too!

Suggested ingredients: •Unsalted nuts •Dried fruits (blueberries, dates, bananas, apples, cranberries, raisins) •Dried tropical fruits (papaya, pineapple, mango) •Sunflower or other healthy seeds •All-natural, crunchy cereal of your choice •Healthy sweets (flaked coconut, carob chips, yogurt-covered raisins, dark chocolate chips) In a re-sealable bag or plastic container: Make some “gorp” – good old raisins and peanuts. Leave it as is, or supplement the gorp any way you like. Try dried cherries, spicy hot peppers, or dried carrots.

Mix up a healthy tropical trail mix, including dried papaya and pineapple, macadamia nuts, unsweetened flaked coconut and cashews, or be exotic and add some dried mango.

Combine ingredients to create some healthy human bird food, which can include raisins, sunflower seeds, dried dates, and dried blueberries.

Devise your own personalized healthy trail mix according to your tastes. Try dried bananas, apricots and apples, all-natural crunchy cereal, carob chips, yogurt-covered raisins, or sunflower seeds.

Women Have High Risk of Gall Stones Women have a particularly high risk of gall stones – double that of men. Excess estrogen tends to increase the liver’s production of cholesterol and make complete emptying of the gall bladder more difficult. Pregnancy, birth control pills and estrogen replacement therapy all increase estrogen levels and the risk of gall stones.

Native Americans and Mexican Americans also have a high risk of gall bladder disease. Among the Pima Indians of Arizona, 70 percent of women have gall stones by the time they are 30.

Gall Stones: Why Weight Matters Research has shown that individuals who are even moderately overweight have an increased risk of developing gall stones.

The increased weight reduces the amount of bile salt secreted in bile, resulting in a greater concentration of cholesterol and the development of hardened deposits.

High-fat, low-fiber diets also increase the risk of gall stones because they increase the liver’s secretion of cholesterol in bile. And rapid weight loss diets in which the body is forced to metabolize fat stores in the body also increase the liver’s secretion of cholesterol.

About 30 percent of persons who undergo bariatric surgery for weight loss develop gall stones within a few months of surgery.

Piedras en la vesicular: ¿por qué el peso importa?

New Identity

“Our new name isn’t driving change in our hospital; but rather, the changes in the programs, services and care we now offer our patients at MGH and our eight clinics has driven the name change,” said Scott Hilburn, Hospital commissioner. “The growth in the number and variety of Mason General’s family of clinics over the past few years is one of the most obvious changes to our organization.

We wanted to keep the name, Mason General Hospital, and yet we wanted to create an overall organizational name that reflects our values and aspirations as a larger organization.

We also wanted to show how the clinics are part of Mason General Hospital as a family of healthcare providers promoting health and wellness in our community”.

Along with the all-inclusive name, a new, streamlined logo was designed. Starting in August, a re-designed Scope news magazine will arrive in the mail.

Take Care of Your Achilles’ Heel If you’ve taken a course in world literature, you know all about Achilles and his vulnerable

heel. And if you take part in any activities that involve running, jumping, walking or stair stepping, you know all about the pain of Achilles tendinitis.

The Achilles tendon is a large band of tissue that connects the calf muscle to the back of the heel.

When it becomes inflamed because of repetitive or intense strain or a sudden change in your exercise routine, the result is tendinitis. Symptoms include mild aching most of the time, plus severe pain during certain exercises. Sometimes, there is a mild swelling or bump.

Early treatment with rest, ice and elevation is important. See a doctor if the problem persists.

Letting the condition get worse could result in a tear or rupture of the tendon.

Other Reasons for Ankle Pain, Swelling

Aside from tendinitis, sprains and fractures, a swollen, stiff or painful ankle could be caused by: • rheumatoid arthritis, gout, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis or other inflammatory types of arthritis; • nerve compression problems such as tarsal tunnel syndrome, sciatica or ilial tibial band syndrome.

Intermittent swelling of the feet and ankles could be related to sodium retention, congestive heart failure, kidney problems or hormonal changes.
