Breast cancer can be a terrifying experience for a woman.

Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics (MGH & FC) has a Patient Navigation Program to help women through it. Karry Trout, RT(R)(M) is the program manager and Patient Navigator, and one of the first staff members a woman connects with after initially learning she has breast cancer. Ms. Trout acts as the patient’s healthcare ally and advocate, helping her navigate the best possible journey through the healthcare system, connecting her with all of the support services available.

The Patient Navigation Program, which is still developing and works closely with outreach to the Hispanic community, consists of several support components. The Puget Sound Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure helped start this program in April of 2010. In April of 2011 the program received a second year of funding. “Already, we have documented cases of women who have greatly benefited from this service,” Trout said, adding, “I’m certain these women would not have had their mammogram or follow-up procedures without the program.”

The Patient Navigation Program’s third annual FREE Women’s Health Event is Saturday, October 15, featuring free screenings for low-income and uninsured or underinsured women. “These events are a vital part of the Hospital’s community outreach. Not only have we diagnosed breast cancers through this Event, but also other health issues such as high blood pressure and diabetes. The free services provided are a great show of teamwork and spirit, and make getting a mammogram a good experience,” said Trout.

MGH diagnoses over 30 cases of breast cancer annually, and offers different levels of support based on individual needs. Resources for financial assistance are available through the Washington Breast, Cervical and Colon Health Program and the Karen Hilburn Breast and Cervical Cancer Fund. Women can connect with other breast cancer survivors through the American Cancer Society’s Reach to Recovery Program, among other local services.

“It’s amazing to see these women transform from feeling powerless over their disease to being a strong advocate for their own lives, and even turn their cancer experience into something positive. After winning their personal battle with cancer, many women want to help with cancer education, community awareness, and fundraising to join in the fight against breast cancer,” Trout said.

Some plastics raise cancer risk Bisphenol A (BPA), found in many rigid plastic products, has qualities that make it a “hormone disruptor,” blocking or mimicking estrogen and other hormones. Studies have suggested that, at certain levels of exposure, it may increase the risk of breast cancer.

Plastics can leak chemicals if they are scratched or heated. To reduce your exposure to plastics: use baby bottles that are “BPA free” don’t cook food in plastic containers or roasting/steaming bags avoid using plastics with recycling symbol 1 (such as store-bought water bottles) more than once don’t cook in plastics with recycling symbol 7 unless they also say PLA or have a leaf symbol on them keep all plastic containers out of the heat and sun [SOURCE: “Exposure to chemicals in plastic,” BreastCancer.org, last modified June 7, 2011]

Passive smoke raises diabetes risk Smokers have a higher risk of getting type 2 diabetes, and so do individuals who are exposed to second-hand smoke.

In a study based on questionnaires given to more than 100,000 female nurses in 1982, researchers found that 39 of every 10,000 subjects exposed to secondhand smoke (but only 25 of 10,000 non-smokers) developed diabetes every year over the next 24 years. When age, weight and family history were taken into account, heavy smokers had a 12 percent higher risk than those exposed to second-hand smoke.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Mammograms help save lives How aware are you?

Today, more Americans survive breast cancer than any other cancer. In fact, the death rate of breast cancer patients has been declining in the United States since the year 2000, according to the National Cancer Institute. The American Cancer Society (ACS) attributes the present decrease in breast cancer death rates to finding the cancer earlier, and to now having better treatments available. How is this done? With regular mammograms.

Breast cancer’s five-year survival rate has increased dramatically since 1982, when less than 30 percent of women underwent a clinical exam. Now, about two-thirds of American women over age 40 receive regular mammograms – the most effective way to detect breast cancer, according to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. There are currently more than 2½ million breast cancer survivors in the United States, according to the ACS. Almost one in eight women will have breast cancer. It is second only to lung cancer in its fatality rate among American women, and it is the most common cancer found in women – other than skin cancer.

In order to help detect breast cancer in time, all women should learn about breast self-exams and start doing them as early as age 20. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists also recommends that women between the ages of 20 and 39 undergo clinical breast exams every one to three years, followed by annual mammograms by age 40.

Mammograms are more crucial at this age because women in their 40’s have a shorter window of opportunity to detect

When Mark Schlauderaff, M.D. bought a Bianchi road bike to ride to work, it was his commitment to taking care of himself in his 50’s, and beyond. “I’ve been witness to a number of people in our community who have made a lifetime practice of exercising regularly at a high level, and the beneficial impact on their aging has been really dramatic,” he said. These days Dr. Schlauderaff rides his bike to his office at Olympic Physicians, PLLC in Shelton a few times a week – whenever weather conditions and work schedules allow.

Exercise also helps him manage stress. “I’ve found it is essential to exercise regularly to deal with the rigors of my work. I sleep better and I’m more relaxed when I maintain my exercise routine,” he said. “I have also read the medical literature about the effects of exercise on health, and the list of benefits of regular exercise is amazingly long – from helping to control blood pressure and body weight to markedly improving how one ages, and improving brain health.”

For the past 15 years, Dr. Schlauderaff has enjoyed cycling as his exercise of choice.

He also used to swim, when time allowed. “I used to run for exercise, but in my early 40s my back started bothering me when I was running, and I decided if I was going to keep up relatively high-intensity exercise, I’d better switch to something that was lower-impact and easier on my joints.” After seeing some former runners need joint-replacements around age 60, Dr. Schlauderaff is glad he made the switch when he did.

“So part of the reason I enjoy cycling is that it is low-impact. That is, as long as you don’t’ crash,” he quipped. He started riding an old, used Schwinn touring bike. Then he upgraded to a new Bianchi road bike for more efficient riding. Dr. Schlauderaff also found a riding partner who mentored him on technique and mechanics.

He recommends that anyone considering an exercise program should start with simple goals before gradually increasing the frequency, duration, and intensity of their exercise – once their healthcare provider has already given them the “green light” to work out, of course. Exercising with a partner or pet also helps. “It generally takes about three weeks to establish a habit, and by sticking with it for that long, most people will realize that they just feel better as a result of exercise, and that will help sustain the new behavior,” he said.

in good hands MGH awarded again Once again, Mason General Hospital has been named as one of the nation’s “Most Wired” hospitals, according to the results of the 2011 Most Wired Survey and Benchmarking Study released in Hospitals & Health Networks magazine. MGH received “Most Wired - Rural” status in 2008 and 2009, and then in 2010 and 2011 it was reclassified to compete across the board not based on size, but solely on IT capabilities, with all major hospitals in the United States.

“We are very excited to receive this prestigious award again,” said Eric Moll, CAO, MGH & FC. “It demonstrates that in a rural community you can enjoy the benefits of the most advanced information system available. This is a direct result of the commitment put forth by the Board and our staff over the past five years to find ways to improve our systems. With their strategic vision we have built the foundation for a seamless exchange of patient information throughout Puget Sound, the full potential of which has not yet been realized. The ability to share electronic information reduces the duplication of patient tests, as it increases the coordination of care to improve the patient experience and outcomes”. MGH & FC continues to upgrade its technology, including the use of electronic medical record-keeping of patient information.

“Receiving this award shows the commitment of our staff to using electronic technology to its fullest while providing excellent care,” said Tom Hornburg, CIO, MGH & FC. “Patients are more engaged in their healthcare as treatments become tailored to the individual through advances in technology.” The latest IT addition at MGH & FC includes “MyMasonHealth.com” – an online service that allows patients of MGH and its eight clinics 24-hour-a-day access to their medical visit summaries.

Slowing the inevitable weight gain Weight gain after age 40 happens, and a recent study concluded that in our culture it may be “an intrinsic aspect of aging.” The study found, however, that the rate of weight gain was less in persons who continued to engage in vigorous exercise.

The study found that continuing to exercise long-term helped subjects diminish the tendency and avoid the extreme weight gain that many Americans experience with advancing age. Exercise has less effect on weight gain in older compared to younger men, however.

Weight loss: watch what you eat Everyone wanting to lose weight knows that it’s important to exercise as well as cut calories. Many believe, however, that exercise is a 50/50 partner whereas in reality it usually accounts for only about 20 percent of weight loss. It may take an hour or more, for example, to walk off the calories consumed in a piece of cheesecake.

Watch out for excessive weight loss Many Americans choose to run a marathon for the challenge of completing 26.2 miles.

A significant number, however, list weight loss as their number one goal. The risk for such individuals, particularly young women, is overtraining and not getting adequate nutrition, resulting in the “female athlete triad”: amenorrhea (no menstrual periods), osteoporosis, and disordered eating.

Warning signs include: missed or irregular periods, extreme thinness, a preoccupation with not missing a day of exercise, and an unusual amount of self-criticism or self dissatisfaction.

High scores for Lab MGH & FC Laboratory successfully completed a Joint Commission regulatory inspection in July.

By law, laboratories are required to be inspected every two years. The Joint Commission has been inspecting MGH Laboratory since 1993.

According to Dee Ann Kline, Ph.D., director of Laboratory Services, the inspections are an opportunity to both acknowledge the quality work of a laboratory and gain insight on how to continually improve. Because Laboratory activities are dispersed throughout the organization, the inspection also surveyed activities in the nursing units and at the various Clinics.

“During the last year, the lab team has actively engaged in a number of projects aimed at improving work flow, standardizing processes, and creating a culture of positive teamwork. The hard work has had a definite impact on the quality of the lab and success of the inspection,” said Dr. Kline. She went on to compliment her staff by adding, “Several of the staff came in on their day off or when off-shift to meet with the inspector. Technical staff and Lab assistants readily answered questions or demonstrated skill.”

Eileen Branscome, MGH & FC COO, praised the Laboratory staff, telling them, “It was impressive to watch your interactions with Dr. Sherman (inspector); and observe your confidence and pride in what you do and how you do it. Dr. Sherman’s comments to (Hospital) Commissioner Scott Hilburn summed up the survey well – “You’re in good hands.”

MGH & FC recently announced that Keren H. Yang, O.D., optometrist at Mason General Hospital Eye Clinic, is now board-certified in Optometry. Dr. Yang has worked at MGH Eye Clinic since 2008. “We are extremely fortunate to have her on staff, as Dr. Yang is one of very few optometrists who have this specialized designation,” said Monica Vuong, M.D., board-certified ophthalmologist and eye surgeon at MGH Eye Clinic. Dr. Yang received her Doctor of Optometry from Illinois College of Optometry, Chicago in 2004. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and biological sciences from the University of Washington, Seattle. She has practiced in various clinical settings

including private practice, hospital eye care, and a Lasik surgery center. Her special interests include contact lens fitting, cataract, glaucoma, and diabetic eye care.

Employee focus Judy Yucha, an environmental services technician, has worked at MGH for the past 10 years. “I love working here, as everyone is so nice and friendly and cares about you as a person,” she said. She went on to mention how Bob Appel, CEO, and Eric Moll, CAO, will often see her on the job and stop to talk to her. “When they see me they always ask how my day is going, and if all is okay.” Judy’s job brings her great personal satisfaction.

“I love helping patients and making sure their rooms are safe and clean.”

Classes & support groups Diabetes The 2011 MGH & FC’ combined Shelton and Allyn Diabetes Support Groups Buffet Luncheon will feature food, fun, and prizes with “DiaBingo!” The luncheon will be held in the Ellinor Room at MGH on Thursday, October 20 from 12:45 to 2 p.m. MGH’s Executive Chef, John Cruse and staff will prepare: salmon with a citrus glaze, roasted herb potatoes, green beans with slivered almonds, spinach salad, and dessert. The MGH Diabetes Support Group, affiliated with the American Diabetes

Classes are for anyone with chronic conditions: heart or lung problems, pain, arthritis,

migraines, or any other chronic condition.

The focus is to help you manage and improve your day-to-day life. Topics include: managing your medications, dealing with depression, fatigue management, exercise, eating well, controlling pain, and communicating better with your doctor, family, and friends. Treasures (Left) Last month, Treasures Thrift Store had an “after hours” celebration of its “new look” with staff, Hospital administrators, volunteers, and members of the MGH Foundation – the governing body of Treasures Thrift Store. Under new volunteer management, displays have been updated, inventory has been changed, and a new, open floor plan has been incorporated. Treasures Thrift Store and Treasures Book Store help raise money for needed equipment at MGH & FC.

To hydrate or not to hydrate?

Runners training for a marathon are advised to hydrate—drink plenty of water before, during and after exercising.

Dehydration and overheating are common problems.

Sports medicine experts warn, however, that drinking too much water can also be a problem, diluting the blood and leading to hyponatremia, a low concentration of sodium. Although dehydration is more common, hyponatremia is far more serious, sometimes leading to brain damage and/ or death. Sports drinks will not eliminate the risk of hyponatremia, although they may slow the process a bit.

Women are more at risk than men for hyponatremia, perhaps because of their body size and tendency to sweat less and retain fluids longer.

campus renewal Campus Renewal Project

By Derek Rae, Construction Manager, Associate, OAC Services, Inc. In the last update, construction on the new generator building east of the main building was just getting started. Construction on that building is ahead of schedule and should be completed by middle of November. Once the contractor installs a metal roof, close to the middle of October, tradespeople will begin installing insulation and finishes inside the building.

When the exterior lot gets paved and finishes are installed in the generator building, it will be the first structure of the Mason General Hospital Campus Renewal Project to be completed.

It is wonderful to see the new surgical wing exterior walls erected. Structural steel has been installed inside the building that will support the roof, and metal decking is being placed on top of the steel supports. After the decking is complete, the roofing contractor will begin installing flashing and roof materials to have a dry building by end of November.

There is still a lot to do inside the new wing. Installation of the storefront (aluminum framing and exterior glazing) should begin by November at the new south lobby and surgical wing infill areas. After installation of the storefront, the contractor will be able to heat the building and really move quickly inside the building. Wall framing will begin in November as soon as the roof is water-tight, and the first sheet of drywall will be installed in December.

Patients started using the new parking area north of the emergency department as soon as it was available. A total of 11 new parking stalls were added with two of those being utilized as ADA van-accessible stalls. Also outside the emergency department construction of a new decontamination room is nearing completion.

Inside MGH construction has begun to upgrade medical systems in patient rooms starting in the labor and delivery area. The current plan is to renovate two rooms per month, working from labor and delivery to the medical/surgical/pediatrics area. Look for the contractor’s “Construction Progress” board at the north entrance for more detailed updates.
