Staff and Physicians Go the Extra Mile After Storms Winter hit hard on the evening of Thursday, December 14, with high winds and heavy rains that uprooted hundreds of tress, causing power outages throughout Mason County. The aftermath of the storm closed area schools and several businesses on Friday the 15th and into the weekend. However, the storms didn’t end there. Other storms of varying degrees continued through the middle of January – more winds, more rain, snow and ice – not to mention multiple-car accidents.

Even though it was not safe to travel on the day of December 15, the hospital staff and local physicians still made it to work – many before they were scheduled

Clinics Now Have Electronic Medical Records Oakland Bay Pediatrics, Shelton, and North Mason Medical Clinic, Belfair, have added “Electronic Medical Records” to their host of features for improving patient care.

The EMR was successfully implemented in November as a part of Public Hospital District No. 1’s wide upgrade in technology.

Both clinics now have a single, shared electronic chart for each patient, allowing physicians and clinical staff to document patient visits, streamline clinical workflow, and securely exchange clinical data with other providers. To facilitate this, computers were placed in all patient care areas for

Congestive Heart Failure Forum to Aid Patients in Self-Care Mason General Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is offering, at no charge, a Community Health Education forum to help understand “Congestive Heart Failure” (CHF).

The forum is offered every four months.

MGH encourages anyone that has been diagnosed with CHF to attend, along with patient caregivers, home health nurses, nursing home personnel and patients, and assisted-living patients.

This forum provides opportunities for continuous learning of self-management of CHF by the patient, while improving the patient’s quality of life and preventing re-hospitalization.

Hospital Recognized for High Quality Care in Bariatric Surgery MGH is an American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS) Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. The ASBS Center of Excellence designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery.

To earn a Center of Excellence designation, MGH underwent a documentation and policy review and site inspection, during which all aspects of the program’s surgical processes were closely examined and data on health outcomes was collected.

“Due to the increasing prevalence of morbid obesity and its inherent health risks, and the opportunities available to greatly improve the health of this patient population, we recognize the need to implement a systematic approach to improving quality,” said Bob Appel, CEO at MGH. “At MGH we believe that the ASBS Centers of Excellence program will serve as a catalyst, driving strong programs to get even better. We have done our part, and we urge our peers to join in the effort.”

Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), an organization dedicated to pursuing surgical excellence, formulates and establishes the rigorous standards with which MGH and other Centers of Excellence must comply, thoroughly inspecting and evaluating each candidate for designation, and upon review, recommends approval of designation for those physicians and facilities whose practices and outcomes meet the stringent demands set forth by SRC for ASBS. MGH’s DiDonna Leads Cardiac Life Support Team to Paraguay

Mason General Hospital’s Education Coordinator, Tom DiDonna, R.N. (shown holding a box) is discussing advanced airway techniques for respiratory failure in the adult and child during a training session for the American Heart Association.

MGH’s Tom DiDonna, R.N., led a medical mission to Paraguay in November to provide the first Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) courses in the country’s history.

“We trained more than 30 physicians in the resuscitation skills for both adult and pediatric patients,” said DiDonna, upon returning. The mission was sponsored by Mason General Hospital, the International Primary Trauma Care Foundation, American Heart Association and Operation Smile. A follow-up trip is planned for the summer of 2007 to train physicians from Central and South America to teach their own ACLS and PALS courses. The course was provided in Spanish and all of the educational materials were translated into Spanish. This was the first time ever, in the world, that the training materials were totally in Spanish.

“This trip would not have been possible if some of MGH’s employees had not helped,” added DiDonna. “A special thank you to Maria Velasco (director of interpreter services) and Ricardo Del Bosque (Oakland Bay Pediatrics) for their extra effort in making the translation possible!”

In addition, Tom stated that the trip would not have been possible without the support and encouragement of MGH and the hospital staff and leadership staff in allowing him to head such an important international volunteer effort!

Holiday Babies Born at MGH

“We had many more people visiting ER than normal,” said Cheryl Ann Graf, ARNP, MSN, MBA, emergency department director at MGH. “Due to the power outages, many people couldn’t use their at-home medical equipment for treatment, so they had to come in for care. And then we had the normal ED visits on top of that.”

The power outages also affected: Local physician offices This required additional patients to be seen at MGH. The local physicians then came into the hospital to help by admitting their patients, which helped in the overloaded ED. People who required electricity for their home respiratory treatments They needed power, so MGH’s respiratory department set up places in the hospital where they could come in and plug in their equipment. MGH staff also contacted home oxygen suppliers to make sure that they understood the urgency and delivered home oxygen bottles to MGH so those without power could operate their own oxygen machines.

Meals The cafeteria served many more meals than normal since stores and restaurants were closed due to the power being off.

“This willingness to help the patients was impressive. Everyone pitched in,” said Bob Appel, CEO at MGH. “Staff did whatever it took, in an efficient, professional and caring manner, to meet patient and community needs.”

“This winter has been one of several weeks of high stress for our staff,” continued Appel. “It makes me very proud of our staff and physicians and how they stepped it up. They were there, throughout the hospital, meeting the needs of the patients and families.”

However, this attitude is not unique to this winter weather. On many occasions, hospital staff and physicians repeatedly come out of their warm, dry, safe and comfortable homes – in the middle of severe storms – to help the patients at MGH. “I have worked in many area hospital facilities,” added Graf. “And I have never seen this much loyalty to a community and patients.

This is unique and special. We truly do care, and it shows.”

April “Living Well with Diabetes” Classes The next “Living Well With Diabetes” class offered by Mason General Hospital is set for Tuesday to Thursday, April 17, 18, and 19, from 9 a.m. until noon in the Ellinor Room at MGH. According to Sue Barwick, R.N., certified diabetes educator and coordinator of the class, “Diabetes self-management can be improved with proper knowledge and skills, and most people with diabetes can lead a healthy, active life.” MGH has a team of healthcare providers that teach the class. Studies show that effective selfmanagement of the disease is beneficial for the patient and their family.

Content of the class includes diabetes diagnosis, proper meal planning, diabetes medications, exercise, prevention and treatment of complications, stress management, living with diabetes, and the use of support people and a healthcare team.

Coffee: The Unfiltered Truth In the market for a new coffee pot? You may want to consider a drip model. Coffee contains antioxidants, many of which have significant health benefits. Other constituents, such as the lipids, cafestol and kahweol, may not be so beneficial. Exercise Good for Aging Eyes Middle-aged and older Americans who exercised at least three times a week had a 70 percent reduced risk of developing the most advanced “wet” form of age-related macular degeneration, a disease that progressively destroys central vision, according to a populationbased study of 3,874 residents of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.

Cancer Fund Expands Service

The Karen Hilburn Breast Cancer Fund recently announced that it is expanding its service to include the diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer at Mason General Hospital for women living in Mason County who are non-insured, underinsured or without any other financial option.

“We are very pleased to announce that the Fund has been so successful that we can extend our help to cervical cancer as well”, said Karen Hilburn, founder. Until recently, the fund only provided for breast cancer diagnosis and treatment at MGH. The KHBC Fund is as active as ever, with a most recent assistance of nearly $6,000 to a local woman with breast cancer. “Without this assistance, we would never have been able to pay for the treatment”, said the patient’s husband. “We were overwhelmed with the cost involved, and so grateful and relieved when the (KHBC) Fund came through for us”. The Fund has been in existence since 2003. More than five women in Mason County have been helped with their medical expenses for breast cancer.

The Fund is continually seeking women who need help with medical expenses for breast cancer, and now cervical cancer. Local women who may be eligible to receive the assistance should call Women’s Health at MGH at (360) 427-3648 (from Belfair (360) 275-8614, and ask for Women’s Health in Diagnostic Imaging).

New Electronic Medical Record Now in Emergency Department

MGH’s new state-of-the-art tracking board for the electronic T-System allows the emergency department staff to see, at a moment’s glance, the status of each patient and status of care. This system allows for better communication between physicians and staff, enhancing patient safety and timely care.

Mason General Hospital recently added to the Emergency Department the T-System, “a bedside charting system to help emergency physicians and nursing staff provide more accurate and comprehensive documentation of healthcare services to the patient.”

“This all means more efficient and better communication of care in our emergency department,” said Cheryl Ann Graf, ARNP, MSN, MBA, emergency department director at MGH. “In addition, patient safety is improved tremendously since everything is so immediate and with better communication. This efficiency improves patient outcomes.

“Every ED patient is seen in registration upon entering,” pointed out Graf. “They are then seen by the triage nurse and placed on the tracking board according to condition.

Since we see anywhere from 65 to 75 patients a day, it is important that we have excellent methods in place to stay on top of each patient before they receive treatment, during their treatment, and after the are discharged. We can now monitor more efficiently the patient’s wait times and any changes that may occur while waiting.”

Public Hospital District Elects Officers of Board Public Hospital District No.1, the governing body of Mason General Hospital, Oakland Bay Pediatrics and North Mason Medical Clinic in Belfair, recently announced the officers for the 2007 Board of Hospital Commissioners.

Nancy Trucksess, Shelton, who has served as president since mid-2006 after Bill McComb resigned from the commission, will remain as president of the three-person board. Don Wilson, Potlatch, will be secretary and Scott Hilburn, Shelton, trustee.

The commissioners meet every second and fourth Tuesday of the month (except holidays) beginning at 8 a.m. in the Washington Room at Mason General Hospital.

Hospital District Commissioners Ask County Commissioners to Delay Re-Districting Effort While More Information is Shared An Open Letter to the Community, January 2007 As many of you know, the hospital district commissioners of Public Hospital District No. 1 of Mason County and local hospital leaders have been working diligently on plans to better meet the healthcare needs of our local communities, including a proposal to re-draw district boundaries to reflect hospital usage patterns.

As part of the process to withdraw areas including the north portions of Belfair, Dewatto and Tahuya, hospital district commissioners held a public meeting in Allyn on January 8 to hear comments from community members. Northern area residents confirmed the hospital district’s findings that most people from the Belfair area drive north to Bremerton when they need hospital services. Some expressed concern about the future location of the North Mason Medical Clinic. Following the meeting, many additional residents called to support the hospital district’s effort. It has become clear that more

communication about our plans is needed throughout Mason County.

The re-districting effort must, by law, include several steps. The first step was for hospital district commissioners to hear public comments on their proposed resolution to withdraw northern areas of the district. The hospital district commissioners then sent the withdrawal resolution to the Mason County Commissioners for their consideration.

These two actions were completed in early January.

The hospital district commissioners feel compelled to take quick action on this effort so that property owners in the affected areas would not continue to pay property taxes beyond 2007. The withdrawal process must be complete by March 1 to meet this objective.

Establishing district boundaries in a timely manner is also important for the hospital district to continue to plan to meet the future healthcare needs including physician recruitment and capital improvements.

While prompt action is desirable, the

hospital district commissioners have asked the Mason County Commissioners to delay immediate action on the resolution so that they and the hospital’s administrative team can share more information about the value and importance of this re-districting effort and answer community questions.

The hospital administrative team and hospital district commissioners are now seeking meetings with leaders and organizations throughout the county who are interested in hearing more about the plans for the re-districting effort and access to medical services in North Mason County.
