Hospital District Installs Integrated Information System August 1, 2006, Mason General Hospital, Oakland Bay Pediatrics and North Mason Medical Clinic went “live” with a new computerized information system that integrates all the hospital departments and clinics to help facilitate the provision of patient care and data gathering.

“The new Meditech information system allows us to better track a patient through our system by having complete integration of the clinical and business functions,” said Eric Moll, chief financial officer at MGH. “For example, it allows our nursing units to submit an order, and then see the results of the order instantly through a patient tracker status board. We work very hard to provide quality care to the Hospital District, and this new information system is another significant investment in tools that enable our staff to continue performing continually better quality care.”

With this new process, patients need to bring their current insurance cards/coupons and photo identification so the most recent information may be put into the system. 2006 Fantasy Forest Planning is underway for the 2006 Fantasy Forest to be held at The Pavilion at Sentry Park. The type of medications you take (this includes all over-the-counter ones, too) and the dosages, are important to your medical team at Mason General Hospital. Please remember to bring a list of these medications and dosages whenever you come to the hospital for care.

We do not have access to your records at the local pharmacies or your doctor’s office. Because of this, it is very important to have these medications written on a card placed in your wallet.

Please remember to update the card every time your medications change.

SCOPE Washington Hospitals Celebrate 100K Lives Campaign Milestones

Bronze Donated to MGH

National Campaign Saves an Estimated 1,500 Lives in Washington Almost two years ago the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) challenged the nation’s hospitals to re-think their medical practices and save an additional 100,000 lives through employing six life-saving best practices.

Leading the nation – every hospital in Washington State, including Mason General Hospital – rose to the challenge by collaborating to implement changes in healthcare which benefit patients throughout the state. An estimated 1,500 lives were saved in Washington through hospitals working together for a common goal.

“We have watched you (Washington State) in awe,” said IHI CEO, Donald Berwick, M.D., of Washington’s achievements. “You are well ahead of many parts of the country. Hundreds and hundreds of patients have benefited from the work you have done.”

In addition, skills and intervention support were given by all staff and physicians in ER, ICU, respiratory care, pharmacy and medical surgical departments, (plus others, as needed). This teamwork was needed to achieve excellence in outcomes.

Mason County Kids Campaign The Mason County Health Department, in collaboration with Mason Matters, has received a grant from the Washington Health Foundation and is co-sponsoring the Mason County Healthiest Kids Campaign. The Campaign is a community project designed to encourage families with young children to engage in activities that promote health and safety.

Children from birth to 9 years of age will need a Healthiest Kids Passport. There are six health activities and three optional bonus activities to complete on the passport: Immunizations Update, Car Seat/Booster Seat/Seat Belt Clinic, Well Child Exam, Dental Exam, Completing a Family Health Survey, and Daily Physical Activity.

Families who complete all six passport activities will be eligible for a grand prize drawing of a trip to Disneyland for a family of four. Passports will be available at many participating health and service agencies throughout Mason County.

Kimberley T., a larger-than-life-bronze statue that once graced Highway 101 at the original “The Bronze Works” near Taylor Towne, has now found a permanent home on the grounds of the northwest side of Mason General Hospital. The ballerina sculpture was donated by Norma A. Taylor, former owner of “The Bronze Works” and founding member of the MGH Foundation’s Arts Commission. Sculptor Brenda Maltz created this fitting statue. The new aggregate pedestal and installation of the bronze piece were donated by Frank and Marie Bishop in memory of their late son, Ernest Bishop.

The 800-pound sculpture was refurbished by The Bronze Works in Tacoma and was placed on its permanent location with the use of a fork lift from Taylor Shellfish Farms. To preserve the grass at MGH, a “track” leading to the pedestal was built of plywood, donated by Olympic Panel. The MGHF Arts Commission oversaw the project which now adds to the collection of artwork at MGH. OysterFest 2006: MGHF Arts Commission Fundraiser The MGH Foundation Arts Commission is excited about participating in the 2006 OysterFest 25, October 7 and 8, in The Bistro at the Mason County Fair Grounds. Plans are to bring ‘FestGoers’ the finest seafood treats: tiger prawns with special sauce, Kumamoto oyster shooters, with

special sauce, available in an authentic Island Shooter, and California sushi with condiments.

Mechanical Lifts Safer for Patients and Staff

To improve smooth, secure patient handling, MGH is updating its mechanical lifting equipment to assure safe and secure transfers and movements of patients who are not able to bear their full weight. Leila Stevens, R.N.- C, and Paula Wood, CNA, demonstrate how the lift works on staff member, Dan Hoosier, CNA. The overhead lift raises a patient for any type of movement from one place to another within the room, or for repositioning a patient in bed.

Seven new overhead lifts were installed at MGH in May and two more will be installed later this year. MGH is also using new hover mats which “float” patients on a cushion of air to transfer them from surgical tables to stretchers, or to perform other transfers when a patient cannot sit up.

Emergency preparedness needs to happen at all levels: for the home, the workplace and the community. We have all been advised to be prepared to survive on our own for the first 72 hours after a disaster. The reality is that disasters occur at any time.

Depending on the nature of the disaster, help may be hours or days away. How well will our community handle an emergency situation?

To survive a major disaster, a community has to be prepared, know how to respond, work together during recovery and learn from our mistakes so we can be better prepared for the next event. The key to a coordinated response is making sure that everyone understands the role they play during an emergency.

• The new changes emphasize delivering effective chest compressions – “Push hard and fast” – You are doing the work of the heart by moving blood in the person’s body until the ambulance arrives!

• Giving breaths that make the chest rise – You are ‘breathing’ for the person by doing this!

Giving 30 good chest compressions and two breaths, and repeating the cycle until help comes, is the only known treatment to save a life!

Flu Pandemic – Are We Prepared?

The Flu or ‘Influenza’ is something we are all familiar with – an infection of the lungs caused by a virus that can pass from person to person.

When the flu spreads rapidly through a community it is called a flu epidemic, and this is also common during flu season. A flu ‘Pandemic’ is an outbreak of a new flu strain that spreads rapidly around the world, and is far more serious.

Throughout history, flu pandemics have been rare in comparison to epidemics. The largest and most recent flu pandemics occurred in 1918, 1957 and 1968, but the trend is for an increase in pandemics as many more people travel the world with more frequency than ever before.

As a result, a highly contagious flu virus today could spread worldwide much faster than earlier pandemics.

The recent outbreak of Avian Influenza, more commonly known as Bird Flu, originated in Asia and is a type of flu that affects poultry and wild birds. It has affected humans in other parts of the world who have been in close contact with infected birds, but so far the Avian flu has not spread from human to human, though experts predict that it will eventually mutate or change into a form that can be spread by humans. If and when this happens, there is the potential for millions of people to become infected, and we need to be prepared for the worst. Yes, it can come to Mason County, as we are a very mobile society.

Some very simple habits to prevent exposure are the first line of defense in avoiding flu infection. “Taking precautions like washing your hands, covering your cough and avoiding others when you are sick are surprisingly powerful ways to fight the spread of disease,” advises Rosie Noah, infection control officer at Mason General Hospital. “Knowing what could happen is the first step toward being prepared.”

In the event of a flu pandemic, you must be prepared to take care of yourself and your family, and stocking your home with enough provisions to get by for 72 hours to a week is advised, as stores may not be open or have limited supplies. (See story on this page on Emergency Preparedness.)

SCOPE Need Flu Shot?

People who should get vaccinated each year: People at high risk for complications: • Children aged 6 months - 5 years • Pregnant women • People 50 years + • People of any age with chronic medical conditions • People who live in nursing homes or long term care facilities People who live with/care for those at high risk, including: • Household contacts of persons at high risk for complications from flu • Household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children less than 6 months old • Healthcare workers Why get a flu shot?

Influenza is a serious disease and people of any age can get it. In an average year, the flu causes deaths (mostly to those 65 years and older) and more than 200,000 hospitalizations in the United States. The “flu season” in the USA is usually November through April. The annual flu shot is the best way to reduce the chances that you will get the flu.

When to get a flu shot: Each September, flu shots should be offered to people when they are seen by their healthcare providers for routine care or as a result of hospitalization. Try to get vaccinated by October or November, as it takes about two weeks after vaccination for the antibodies to develop and provide protection against the influenza virus. This way you can be protected before the flu season really gets underway.

Can I get the flu even though I got a flu shot?

The ability of the flu vaccine to protect a person depends on the age and health of the person, and the similarity or “match” between the flu virus strain in circulation and the vaccination strain.

How effective is the flu shot?

Among the elderly outside of nursing homes and those with chronic conditions, the flu shot is 30% - 70% effective in preventing hospitalization from pneumonia. Among the elderly in nursing homes, the flu shot is most effective in preventing severe illness, complications, and deaths related to flu. In this population, the shot can be 50% - 60% effective in preventing hospitalization/pneumonia, and 80% effective in preventing death from flu.

Risks from flu shot: The viruses in the flu shot are killed (inactivated), so you CANNOT get the flu from the flu shot. You can have side effects such as: soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given, and fever or aches.

If these problems occur, they begin soon after the shot, and usually last 1-2 days. The shot causing serious harm or death is extremely rare.

However, a vaccine, like any medicine, can cause serious problems, such as severe allergic reactions. Almost all people who receive the influenza shot have no serious problems from it.

SCOPE MGH Staff Recognized by American Heart Association MGH’s education staff was recently recognized by the American Heart Association for being the 7th leading trainer in the entire state of Washington!

Amy Matsomoto, regional manager for the Emergency Care Council and the AHA, who oversees the resuscitation training in Washington, Idaho and Alaska; and Stephen Anderson, M.D., Emergency Cardiovascular Care Council regional committee chairperson, provided a special recognition award for the outstanding efforts MGH’s resuscitation instructors put forth this past year.

“MGH’s staff is responsible for advancing the mission of the AHA, which is to “Learn and Live,” said Matsomoto. “The staff at MGH has been very active in teaching the skills to Amy Matsomoto, regional director from the American Heart Association (AHA), stands with the MGH team honored in June — Lead Instructor, Sherry Curtis, CNA; American Heart Association instructors Rob Bennington, R.N. our professional staff and to the community members,” said DiDonna. “The ultimate goal is protecting and saving the lives of those who live, work in and visit Mason County. We are a small hospital, but the numbers of individuals we train yearly is the seventh highest of all regions and medical centers in the state of Washington! It is the result of the hard work of all of our instructors.”

“We are planning to expand CPR for the community in the autumn of 2006 and 2007.

We want to increase the number of people we train, tenfold. Our plan is to work with the schools to teach students to teach CPR to their friends and families. If we teach one student and that student teaches 10 friends and/or family members, the number of people exposed to the life-saving CPR techniques can be increased tremendously,” added DiDonna.

2006 “Quality Care Open” Tournament Winners

Foundation Gets Check MGH Foundation’s “2006 Quality Care Open” Golf Tournament held in June at the Alderbrook Golf & Yacht Club in Union received a check for $5,000 from the Little Creek Casino & Resort and the Squaxin Island Tribe as this year’s tournament sponsors. Tribal member and Mason General Hospital Foundation board member, David Whitener, Sr., presented the check to Leigh Bacharach, director of development at MGH, and Jayne Hoyos, development officer.

The 12th Annual MGH Foundation Golf Tournament, under the direction of Jack Stark and Steve Demeiro, grossed more than $47,800 in this year’s annual “Quality Care Open” sponsored by Little Creek Casino & Resort and Squaxin Island Tribe.

There were 144 players. Proceeds from the tournament went towards the purchase of medical equipment at Mason General Hospital.

SCOPE Foundation Honors Local Business Women Three local business women – Xinh Dwelley, owner and chef at the world famous Xinh’s Clam and Oyster House; Irene Locke, former owner of the legendary Chinese restaurant, Ming Tree Cafe; and Virginia J. McCarty, owner and CEO of McCarty & Associates, Inc. “a marketing firm,” are the recipients of the 2006 American Business Women’s Award presented by the Mason General Hospital Foundation.

These women will be honored during a public, no-host luncheon on Friday, September 29, 2006 at 11:30 a.m. –1 p.m. at MGH. Every year MGH’s Foundation honors three outstanding business women who are, or were, successful in their occupations; work or have worked in Mason County; and are active as volunteers in the community. There were 18 nominations this year.

“To eat at Xinh’s Clam and Oyster House is a wonderful culinary experience,” said Xinh’s nominator. The same sentiments are expressed by her customers from not just all over the state, but all over the world.

Xinh Dwelley has operated the five-star restaurant in Shelton for the past ten years -- after many years of experience in cooking and catering.

Xinh came to Shelton in 1970 with her husband, Xinh Dwelley, Xinh’s whom she met in Vietnam while he was serving there.

Clam and Oyster In the United States she learned to speak English House and was hired by Taylor Shellfish Farms, where she catered meals and experimented with new recipes. Her skill in cooking, and particularly with oysters, led her to many functions, including the catering of the Washington State Governor’s Ball in Olympia for the past four inaugurations. Xinh has appeared on Public Broadcast Service as a “Chef’s Cook,” has been featured at the Bayview School of Cooking in Olympia, and has cooked for world famous Julia Child, demonstrating to her how to “properly shuck an oyster.”

Xinh’s community support and involvement activities are numerous.

She has been both a judge and contestant at Skookum Rotary’s Annual OysterFest, and has helped raise more than $10,000 for the Mason General Hospital Foundation with her annual, “Cooking with Xinh” demonstration.

Besides Xinh’s expertise, her sense of humor, humble nature, and personal attention to her patrons, has added to her great success in business.

Irene Locke, the most senior of the three women, still has a hand in the operation of what is close to the oldest restaurant in Shelton. As the former owner, Irene opened the Ming Tree Cafe in 1952 and worked hard to maintain high standards for her business. The Ming Tree, which once served as the location for the weekly Shelton Rotary meetings, continues to be patronized by the local community Irene Locke, former and is a destination restaurant for many people from owner Ming Tree surrounding counties.

Cafe “Irene worked very quietly behind the scenes as a good-will ambassador in the business and community,” her nominator explained. “She would open early every week to accommodate the Rotary Club for their lunch meetings. She has had little recognition for her

dedication and hard work.”

Irene’s commitment to the restaurant continues today even after the passing of her husband years ago and the sale of the Café. She continues to work part-time to help the new owners.

“She has made the Ming Tree Café a Shelton landmark in her own quiet way,” said her nominator.

Virginia J. McCarty founded McCarty & Associates, Inc. “a marketing firm” in 1986 as a local marketing consultant specializing in strategic marketing and planning.

With extensive knowledge and continuous education in business, marketing, and graphics, McCarty & Associates offers strategic ideas to businesses incorporating the marketing mix - price, product, place, and promotion. The mission statement – “To Virginia J. McCarty, McCarty & Associates serve” sums up Virginia’s business philosophy of “a marketing firm” always doing what is best for the client.

Virginia, a graduate of Washington State University, has won numerous awards for her work including state and national awards for marketing as well as a first place photography award. After graduation she worked for WSU and later Sunkist Growers, Inc. in Los Angeles, before starting her own firm in Shelton. She is deeply involved in the Mason County business and church communities and beyond, with many past and present board memberships. Currently she serves on the professional advisory board at WSU for the Edward R. Murrow School of Communications where she also established a scholarship award at WSU. Virginia, who describes herself as “a student always” is currently working on her Masters of Business Administration in Global Marketing.

“Virginia is an example of a business woman who has mastered life,” said her nominator. “She is grounded in her family, church and community, and her integrity and values permeate her work.”

Mason County Department of Emergency Management, currently run by the Mason County Sheriff, is charged with coordinating and preparing the community for disasters and emergencies. An Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is activated whenever an area-wide disaster occurs. Private agencies such as the Red Cross, law enforcement, fire services, the Tribes, and the medical community have been involved in previous disaster drills.

When Disaster Strikes

If you are concerned about your drinking water, boil it for 5 to 10 minutes, let it cool and then use it for drinking, brushing your teeth and washing hands. Do not use your on-site septic system if the drain field is under water or if sewage is backing up or surfacing on the ground. Remember that wells, septic systems and sewer systems that utilize pumps will not be working during a power outage.

You should choose foods that will keep for a long time and not require electricity (cooking or refrigeration), and include a non-electric can opener.
