When Beca Sartori was first admitted to Mason General Hospital in

May 2020, her husband, Nathan Sartori, did not know whether she would live to celebrate their anniversary in the summer.

It was the height of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Beca Sartori had been experiencing what she thought was heavy menstrual bleeding.

Her doctor told her to call 911, and by the time paramedics arrived at their home in Shelton, she was unconscious, and her heart had stopped beating.

That was the beginning of a long, and at times harrowing, medical journey that ultimately resulted in a series of miracles.

More than one year after coming home from the hospital, Beca is alive, has regained her ability to communicate and walk, and is extremely grateful, along with Nathan, for the care and grace they received every step of the way, starting and ending with Mason General Hospital.

“It all came full circle,” she recalled at an interview in the summer of 2021, after returning home. I entered the Emergency Room technically dead and two months later I came back to the hospital for Rehabilitation Therapy. It’s a nice thing to be in a small community where people know you, and your friends are taking care of you.”

Her doctor told her to call 911 immediately, and shortly after that, Beca lost consciousness. For the rest of her story, Nathan has helped her fill in the details.

“The paramedics performed CPR for 30 to 40 minutes because she had lost her heartbeat,” he recalled. “I was impressed with their perseverance.”

“We later learned that she had lost 50 percent of the blood in her body. It was also during CPR that she suffered two strokes, one on each side of her brain.”

An hour after she was admitted to the hospital, the blood work from an earlier doctor’s appointment came back – Beca had been pregnant, but it was an ectopic pregnancy with an embryo that had implanted in her fallopian tube instead of her uterus.

A surgeon from the Emergency Department performed emergency surgery to remove her fallopian tube and an ovary. Beca was then transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, where she remained sedated, fighting for her life.

“We weren’t sure how she was going to come out of this”

“They told me that inevitably there would be brain damage, for sure,” Nathan said. “We weren’t sure how she was going to come out of this.

She was on a ventilator and things were not looking good.”

The Sartoris are a well-known family in Shelton – Nathan Sartori works in special education at Shelton High School and is a youth pastor at Mt. View Alliance Church, where his father, Mark Sartori, has been a pastor for more than three decades.

Many of the nurses on the floor knew the Sartoris, such as Joanne Norris, RN, and Tina Lohmeyer, RN. Many nurses who were not working that night called to check in on Beca.

The couple has lived in Shelton their entire lives. Beca Sartori graduated as valedictorian of Shelton High School, and later earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Washington in history and teaching, respectively.

Throughout their lives, the Sartoris have been deeply involved in their church. They have a strong calling to give back.

Beca Sartori has been participating in mission trips since junior high school. Over the years, she has helped build homes for people in need in Mexico, supported a children’s home in rural Washington, assisted with medical clinics in Haiti, helped to start a school for the deaf, worked at an orphanage and most recently traveled to Zimbabwe to provide services with her church.

Cumulatively, she’s taken part in 40 to 50 mission trips.

In 2020, Beca began experiencing issues with her menstrual cycle. She called her doctor on May 27, 2020, because she had been “experiencing some of the worst pain” in her life and was bleeding heavily, she said.

Nathan and Beca Sartori feel grateful for the support they received from family, friends, their church, and health care providers.

As news spread about her condition, family members made their way to the hospital – a nerve-wracking endeavor during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The staff at Mason General Hospital wanted to give us an opportunity to say goodbye,” Nathan said. “This was when everything was going on with the pandemic. They were very gracious in letting people come into her room, one or two at a time, just to see her and say their goodbyes. We were grateful they were sensitive about that.”

A few days before their wedding anniversary, on July 22, Beca was discharged to go home. She continued physical therapy at Mason General Hospital, under the guidance of Cheryl Woods, Director of Rehabilitation Services. Woods and Sartori attend the same church.

“We are so grateful to all of the people who cared for Beca, and it all started here at Mason General,” Nathan said.

“They acted quickly and efficiently and thoughtfully. The ER doctor called me on my cell phone the next day after Beca’s surgery just to check on me. That was incredible. It all started here. It was here that they initially saved her life.”

Both of the Sartoris want to express their immense gratitude to the health care providers who watched over them and cared for Beca.

“I can’t say enough about the care I received here, from the nurses, many of whom go to our church, to Cheryl and her team at Physical Therapy,” Beca Sartori said. “They are fantastic.”

“Not just one miracle” After eight hours in the Mason General Hospital ICU, Beca Sartori was transferred to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, where she remained sedated for close to a month.

Eventually she made enough progress that she could be transferred to Vibra Specialty Hospital of Portland, which specializes in treating patients recovering from strokes.

It was at Vibra that Beca made a lot of positive strides, figuratively and literally – she took her first steps and learned how to walk again, progressing to being able to walk down the hallway. She also began to breathe more easily on her own and she regained much of her cognition back at this time.

Her progress gave her family hope.

“One day I came in, and this was during a time that she wasn’t able to communicate very well and we still weren’t sure she would come out of this cognitively,” Nathan Sartori said. “I had hurt my hand, and I told her she couldn’t squeeze it so hard because I had stitches. When I held up my hand to show her, she gave me this kind of look like she used to that said, ‘What did you do this time?’ It was that moment I thought, ‘Oh, she’s in there.’”

Beca “came out on top” thanks to the persistence of the nurses and doctors, Nathan said. After three weeks, she was transferred to MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, where she received “outstanding care” and began much of her physical therapy and occupational therapy.

By the time she left Good Samaritan, Beca was walking and eating on her own, something that they did not think would be possible a short time ago.

“We attribute this to our faith,” Nathan said. “We had so many people praying for us. We absolutely believe that not just one miracle took

A few months after the one-year anniversary of leaving the hospital, Beca is working through minor issues – she has some trouble reading up close, occasionally has a memory slip and is working through some fine motor skill and speech challenges.

The couple is also still processing the loss of what would have been their first child, and the trauma that comes with a devastating and lengthy hospital stay.

But, they are full of hope. By the summer of 2021, Beca was back to doing what she is most passionate about.

“In less than a year I went from being in the ICU to traveling to Zimbabwe, where I got to do some educational consulting with a school and orphanage, working with kids with special needs,” she said.

“My husband and I are really passionate about our faith, missions, travel and working with youth. We still get to do these things because I am here.”

Wading through Medicare coverage can

be a confusing task.

Mason Health has you covered – once you turn 65, everyone in the country is eligible for Medicare Part A and Part B coverage. Part A helps pay for inpatient care in a hospital and other health care and hospice care needs following a hospital stay, while Part B helps pay for services from health care providers, including most preventive services.

Terri Gushee, RN, Director Medicare Part B coverage waives copays of Population Health and deductibles for annual wellness visits.

Mason Health’s new Medicare Wellness Program, which is available to all patients who qualify for Medicare, debuted in January 2022.

A registered nurse will reach out and guide patients through what to expect from their first Medicare Wellness Visit and subsequent, annual wellness visits.

Medicare Q&A

Q: Am I eligible for Medicare?

Most people are eligible for Medicare once they turn 65 and have been a legal resident for at least five years. The U.S. government will automatically enroll you in Medicare Part A coverage at no cost if you are already collecting Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits.

You will also receive a notification that you are eligible for Part B coverage, which is optional.

People can also become eligible for Medicare due to a disability, end-stage renal disease or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Q: Do I have to pay a premium for Medicare?

Yes. The premium prices rise based on income level. Medicare Part B coverage waives copays and deductibles for annual wellness visits.

Q: Is prescription drug coverage included in Medicare?

Medicare Part D coverage is optional prescription drug coverage.

You can sign up for Medicare Part D at the same time that you enroll in Medicare Part A or Part B.

Q: Can I be enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid at the same time?

If you are 65 or approaching your 65th birthday, expect a postcard in the mail from our health care team to schedule your Medicare Wellness Visit. This postcard will include a packet to fill out with your family health history and health risk assessment.

This free, introductory visit gives you and your care team a chance to talk about your overall health, find ways to avoid illness and help you stay feeling your best. This visit is not a head-to-toe physical exam to treat current health concerns. All Mason Health primary care providers will eventually participate in the program.

More than three years after construction crews first broke ground

for Mason Clinic and nearly two years after the first clinic, Shelton Family Medicine, moved into the new medical office building, Mason Health wrapped up with the last of its clinic moves in December.

Mt. View Women’s Health and its providers moved into Mason Clinic in early December, with providers Danielle Blood, MD, Carley Jacobs, PA-C, Carey Martens, DO, and Andrea Martin, MD, starting to see patients on Dec. 7.

Mason Clinic brings all of the District’s clinics, with the exception of Mason Clinic-Hoodsport Primary Care, into one building physically connected to Mason General Hospital.

Mason Clinic offers services in Behavioral Health, Eye Care, Primary Care, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, General Surgery, Laboratory, Podiatry, Walk-In, and, now, Women’s Health.

Behavioral Health providers work in tandem with Primary Care providers to fulfill the District’s Vision of offering the best patientcentered care in the Pacific Northwest.

This fall, Mason Health welcomed two new Behavioral Health providers, Christy Ross, LICSW, and Martha Svoboda, LMHC. They join pediatric mental health counselor Nicole Giron, LMHC; licensed clinical social worker Erin Martinache, LICSW, and board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners Katie Aldrich, PMHNPBC, Vanessa Cray, PMHNP-BC, Kirsten Garza, PMHNP-BC, and telehealth provider Jess Calohan, DSW, PMHNP-BC. A new peer navigator, Katariena Tulk, also joined the Behavioral Health team, all of which is overseen by Dr. Amber Carlson, DSW, LICSW, Director of Behavioral Health Services.

Christy Ross, LICSW, is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker who joined Mason Health in October 2021.

Ross grew up in a small Maryland town and dreamed of becoming a physician -- “I had that drive and determination to be of service and help others,” she recalled.

When she was 18, Ross worked as a certified nursing assistant in the mental health unit of her local hospital. Because of her youth, adolescents were often placed in her care.

“I listened and shared that things could be different if they wanted help,” she said. “Mental illness pervades many facets of a person’s life, whether they are young or old or have means or not. It can touch anyone.”

In November 2020, she took a job as a complex case management specialist, where she built relationships in the community to help discharge patients who had been in the hospital for more than 100 days, working with providers and family members to address underlying factors for re-admission.

“People do not understand the amount of difficulty there is in getting an individual out of the hospital setting when they have been there for a long time,” Ross said. “It’s the agencies and the courts that sometimes put up roadblocks. There are a lot of layers.”

In 2021, Martinache reached out to Ross and asked if she would be interested in joining Mason Health. Martinache had met Ross when Ross completed an internship during college at Behavioral Health Resources in Shelton, where Martinache worked at the time.

Mason Health appealed to Ross because it is local.

“From living in this community, I see the need,” Ross said. “I’ve known the needs for a long time. It’s so nice for me to be back serving in the community, providing services in the town where I live.”

Ross enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband, adult children and dogs. She enjoys camping and exercising: hiking, swimming, kayaking, spin biking and weightlifting. She is working to become a certified integrative mental health professional (CIMHP), exploring how diet can affect mental health.

Martha Svoboda, LMHC, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who began to see patients in Mason Clinic in September 2021.

In 2002, following a divorce, Ross balanced work, school and raising children as a single mother.

“I had trials and tribulations,” Ross said. “Divorce was not prominent in my family. It was challenging to say I was going to do this. Through everything, I recognized that desire to help others was still with me.”

By 2007, she remarried and moved to Shelton.

At South Puget Sound Community College, where Ross completed an associate’s degree, her mentors encouraged her to pursue becoming a licensed independent clinical social worker.

“There is such versatility in becoming a social worker – the opportunities are vast,” Ross said. “You can work in Human Resources, for child welfare, adult services, own your own practice.”

Ross graduated from the University of Washington-Tacoma in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Welfare and in 2013 with a Master’s Degree in Social Work.

At an internship at a Tacoma clinic, Ross researched and provided primary care providers with a suicide risk assessment tool to help those in a rural setting determine a patient’s suicidal risk.

After graduation, Ross worked as the overnight social worker for an Emergency Department in Bremerton for patients in crisis and then as an inpatient discharge planning social worker at a Gig Harbor hospital.

Martha Svoboda, LMHC

Svoboda was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. She initially studied business and accounting at Griffin Business College in downtown Seattle. However, when she returned to school in 2011, after being selfemployed and raising a family, she knew she would pursue a different career path.

“I knew that staying in the business route was totally opposite of who I am,” she said. “I was drawn toward helping others.”

Svoboda graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, in 2011, and then obtained her Master of Arts degree in Professional Counseling from the same university in 2014.

After obtaining her master’s degree, Svoboda briefly considered opening a private practice, but then pivoted to take a position at a Washington state agency treating individuals with mental illness.

There, she encountered a lot of trauma within that community.

“Much of the work I did was utilizing Cognitive Processing Therapy in both individual and group therapy with women who had suffered trauma,” she said.

exceptional health In addition to this, Svoboda worked collaboratively in providing care for seriously mentally ill individuals and taught suicide prevention for five years, developing and instructing a six-hour seminar: “Suicide Assessment, Treatment, and Collaborative Management for Healthcare Professionals.”

“The more people who recognize the signs for suicide and how to respond, the more they will be likely to ask their family members, friends or coworkers if there is something going on,” Svoboda said.

“This increases the chances for getting people the help they need.”

This is important because in a rural community, the incidence of suicide is higher, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.

“Suicide should not be a taboo topic,” she said. “I feel passionate about that.”

In early 2021, Svoboda began working as a behavioral health consultant for Community Health Care in Pierce County, where she served patients in rural health clinics.

She also recently completed a post-graduate substance use disorder certification.

“Patients don’t suddenly wake up with a substance use disorder; many have a mental illness, often undiagnosed,” she said. “I really

Thomas Cummings, ARNP, started to serve patients at the Walk-In Clinic on Nov. 15. Cummings graduated with a Master of Science in Nursing degree from Pacific Lutheran University in 2008.

His practice philosophy is to partner with his patients to arrive at the best health outcome.

When not working, he enjoys spending time Thomas Cummings, ARNP with his wife and four children, as well as hiking, hunting and fishing.

Zaleh “Zal” Parham, ARNP, started to see patients on Nov. 29. Parham has more than 10 years of experience as a provider seeing her own patients, and before that she was a nurse.

Her passion is personally connecting with patients and focusing on long-term holistic health, including preventive care through nutrition and exercise. She is a veteran of the U.S. Army and enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

The Walk-In Clinic is located inside Mason Clinic at 1701 N. 13th Street in Shelton. The hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.

wanted to understand how the two connect and feel better equipped to treat the whole person.”

Svoboda decided to work for Mason Health because she wanted to serve her local community. She also believes in the model of integrating behavioral health with primary care, which Mason Health adopted in 2020.

“Behavioral health providers at Mason Health can work directly with providers, so it is more collaborative care,” Svoboda said.

“It takes the stigma out of mental health and is a holistic approach to patient care.”

She added, “Mason Clinic is becoming a clinic that is aware of the need and is embracing the Behavioral Health team.”

Svoboda lives with her husband and youngest daughter and enjoys spending time with family and friends. Her favorite activities include hiking in the Olympic Mountains, water sports (especially water skiing) and RV camping.

Jerome Zechmann, MD, expands orthopedic services at Mason Health

to the District’s ongoing partnership with Olympia Orthopaedic Associates.

Jerome Zechmann, MD, began performing orthopedic surgery at Mason General Hospital last fall, joining Dr. Bradley Christ, MD, Dr. Ryan Halpin, MD, Dr. Richard Lamour, MD, Dr. Andrew Manista, MD, and Dr. Darrin Trask, MD. Dr. Zechmann's expertise covers many orthopedic sub-specialties including total joint replacement, sports injuries, and fractures. He performs total hip replacements and teaches courses around the country on minimally invasive hip surgery.

He has more than 30 years of orthopedic surgery experience and has a special interest in total and partial knee replacements, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, and clavicle fractures.

Vaccination continues to be the best way to prevent serious illness

and death associated with the COVID-19 virus. All Washingtonians ages 5 years and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccination.

COVID vaccines are offered at Mason Health’s Vaccination Clinic, by appointment only, as well as with your primary care or pediatric provider at Mason Clinic.

Due to a high volume of appointments at the Vaccine Clinic, please be patient and expect delays when scheduling. Only patients 12 and older may be seen at the Vaccine Clinic. Patients under 12 should make an appointment with their pediatrician for any vaccination appointments. Mason General Hospital Foundation welcomed two new board members in 2021: Billy Thomas and Karen Schade.

Thomas has worked in the Shelton community since 2018. He moved to Shelton in the spring of 2020 and has since become invested in health care and the youth of the community, through his board membership at Mason General Hospital Foundation and the Shelton Family YMCA.

The event was a major success, raising approximately $4,500 for the Auxiliary Guild. Sales from the Gift Shop support the Auxiliary’s medically related scholarship fund for youth and adults in our community. This was a unique opportunity for employees to do some of holiday shopping while practicing their best COVID-19 safety precautions. Special kudos go the MGHF Auxiliary, the staff in the Development and Volunteer Services Office and Kim Cooper in the Infection Prevention, Employee Health & Safety Office. The Gift Shop remains closed until further notice, but stay tuned for shopping Volunteer Coordinator Iris Hilburger and MGHF Auxiliary Treasurer Carol Goodburn manned the opportunities in the future.

Schade enjoys traveling with her partner Bill Sullivan, gardening and entertaining people on their mini farm with their three Labrador retrievers and two cats.

“This year’s challenge really focused on ensuring that our policies are aligned with new state laws, for example, those involving outdoor heat exposure,” Cooper said. “With the recent heat waves we have been experiencing, we need to make sure our employees have enough water, are taking their breaks and that we are able to identify which of our workers require protection.

We asked ourselves, ‘Do we have the right policies and procedures in place?’”

The initial audit took place on April 19, 2021, and the deadline to complete any corrective action plans was Aug. 31, 2021. In the intervening months, Cooper worked with various departments to close any 4safety gaps that emerged during the audit.

In addition to ensuring the District offers a program to protect employees working in extreme heat, Cooper worked to create Maple Glen Senior Living procedures around accident reporting, ensured Mason Health could provide hearing protection, and worked with the Maintenance Department on training in place for working on live electrical panels.

The challenge involved completing a rigorous two-part safety assessment and audit. The assessment and audit are meant to help identify possible gaps in employee safety and health programs and ensure that policies and procedures follow current and new state laws.

This is the second year that Mason Health has earned the Top Performer award. In 2019, Cooper was instrumental in the organization winning the award, which that year focused on the work of the Employee Safety Committee.

This winners of this year’s award received a commemorative plaque, formal recognition at the annual Washington State Hospital Association meeting, and a $2,500 honorarium.

ach year, the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health, in connection to the Power of Rural movement and National Rural Health Day, honors as Community Stars people from throughout the US who are making outstanding contributions to improve health in rural America.

Losing weight is never an easy task. Yet, when patients lose weight, Daniel Burris, MD, based at Mason ClinicHoodsport Primary Care, is committed to helping patients treat obesity. Dr. Burris recently became board-certified in Obesity Medicine and is the only provider in Mason County with this certification.

“We see in Primary Care that obesity is an umbrella and there are many diseases directly affected or caused by it, such Daniel Burris, MD as depression, arthritis, heart diseases, hypertension and high cholesterol,” he said. “If we can help patients lose weight, we improve their conditions and get them off their medication. Helping people with weight loss, you can help them be proactive with their health.”

Obesity is the most prevalent chronic disease in our society, according to the American Board of Obesity Medicine, and yet, many physicians are not trained in how to manage it.

The American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) serves the public and the field of obesity medicine by maintaining standards for assessment and credentialing physicians. Certification as an ABOM diplomat signifies specialized knowledge in the practice of obesity medicine and distinguishes a physician as having achieved competency in obesity care.

Last year in November, NOSORH chose Pamela Schlauderaff, Mason Health’s Director of Quality, Patient Safety and Regulatory Compliance, to be the Community Star for the State of Washington.

For the past 20 years, Schlauderaff has worked closely with the Washington State Office of Rural Health to improve the quality and safety of rural health care clinics throughout the state.

Pamela Schlauderaff, Mason Health’s Director of Schlauderaff enjoys working as a mentor for Quality, Patient Safety and rural health clinics and sharing what she has Regulatory Compliance learned to help improve the care provided to

their communities.

“To me, to even be nominated by the staff at the Department of Health, that’s the biggest compliment,” she said. “It is a huge honor and shows the value of collaboration.”

Mason Health welcomes new volunteer coordinator I

In order to obtain board certification, Dr. Burris completed 60 hours of continuing education, attending conferences on the latest research on lipids and how obesity affects the heart. He then completed a series of training modules and then passed a board exam.

“In medical school, we all received training on nutrition counseling,” he said. “It feels like a bit of an afterthought. This certification requires more in-depth knowledge.”

At least two-thirds of the patients he sees are overweight or obese, Dr. Burris said.

If a patient is interested in weight loss, Dr. Burris is able to work with them on nutrition counseling. He is also able to prescribe medication for weight loss.

“If a patient isn’t ready to be an active participant in their weight loss, or if they’re looking for a magic fix, they will not be successful,” Dr. Burris said. “I work with them to see what a good weight loss goal is and see where they might be struggling. There are medications to help promote weight loss, and I can work with them to tailor that to what would be safe. However, working on diet is the most important thing.”

Iris Hilburger, Volunteer Coordinator

ris Hilburger joined the Mason Health team in November 2021 as the new Volunteer Coordinator for the District. Hilburger grew up in Hillsboro, Ore., and has an extensive background in the environmental and health care fields. She graduated in 2008 from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore., with a major in Environmental Studies and a concentration in Conservation Biology.

In college, Hilburger and a friend helped women in Nicaragua with high rates of cervical cancer.

With a grant, they installed medical equipment and hired community health care workers trained in reproductive health.

After university, Hilburger completed an AmeriCorps fellowship at the Josiah Hill III Clinic in Portland. She created in-home health assessments for immigrant and refugee families and worked with families to create affordable non-toxic cleaning kits.

“I care about health care and equity,” Hilburger said. “I think a lot about how people’s environment impacts them. My interest in health care is centered on population and environmental health.”

Hilburger went on to work in environmental education, teaching sixthgrade students about plants, and later became a backpacking and sea kayaking instructor.

She moved to Olympia in 2014 and worked for OlyKraut and then at the Olympia Free Clinic as the Volunteer Coordinator, though she wore many hats and often acted as the Clinic Supervisor. She is now taking prerequisite classes at South Puget Sound Community College, with the goal of becoming a registered nurse.

“My hope is to build on the foundation and strength of the volunteer program at Mason Health and support our volunteers during this challenging time of the COVID pandemic,” she said. To inquire about the volunteer program at Mason Health, email Iris Hilburger at ihilburger@ masongeneral.com.

C

uando Beca Sartori ingresó por primera vez al Hospital Mason General en mayo del 2020, su esposo, Nathan Sartori, no sabía si iba a vivir para celebrar su aniversario en el verano.

Ahora Beca está viva, ha recuperado su capacidad para comunicarse y caminar, y con Nathan están eternamente agradecidos por la atención y el trato que recibieron en cada paso del camino, que empezó y terminó en el Hospital Mason General.

“Todo volvió a estar como antes”, contó. “Entré a la sala de emergencia técnicamente muerta, y dos meses después estaba en el hospital para terapia de rehabilitación. Es lindo estar en una comunidad pequeña donde la gente te conoce y tus amigos te cuidan”.

En 2020, Beca empezó a notar problemas con su ciclo menstrual.

El 27 de mayo de 2020, llamó a su médico porque había estado “sintiendo los peores dolores” de su vida y sangrando mucho, contó.

Su médico le dijo que llamara al 911 inmediatamente, y luego de eso Beca perdió el conocimiento.

“Los paramédicos administraron reanimación cardiopulmonar (CPR) durante 30 o 40 minutos porque había perdido el ritmo cardíaco”, recuerda Nathan. “Más tarde nos dijeron que había perdido el 50% de la sangre del cuerpo y que había tenido dos infartos, uno en cada lado del cerebro”.

En el hospital, llegaron los resultados de los análisis de sangre: Beca había estado embarazada, pero se trataba de un embarazo ectópico con un embrión que se había implantado en la trompa de Falopio en vez del útero.

“El personal del Hospital Mason General quería darnos la oportunidad de despedirnos”, dijo Nathan.

“Esto fue en plena pandemia.

Fueron muy amables al dejar que entrara Nathan y Beca Sartori se sienten agradecidos por el apoyo que gente en la recibieron de familiares, amigos, su iglesia y proveedores de atención médica. habitación, de uno a uno o dos a la vez, solo para que pudiéramos verla y despedirnos de ella. Les agradecemos mucho por lo comprensivos que fueron con eso”.

Después pasar ocho horas en el ICU del Hospital Mason General, Beca Sartori fue trasladada al Hospital Providence St. Peter de Olympia, donde pasó un mes sedada.

Más adelante la trasladaron al Hospital Vibra Specialty de Portland, que se especializa en tratar pacientes que se recuperan de accidentes cerebrovasculares.

Fue en el Vibra donde dio sus primeros pasos y aprendió a caminar de nuevo. También empezó a respirar más fácilmente por su cuenta y recuperó la capacidad cognitiva.

Tres semanas más tarde, la trasladaron al Hospital MultiCare Good Samaritan de Puyallup, donde empezó la mayor parte de la terapia física y ocupacional.

Cuando salió del Good Samaritan, Beca ya caminaba y comía por sí misma.

Un cirujano del departamento de emergencias la operó de emergencia. Beca Nathan Sartori besa a su esposa Beca Sartori. fue trasladada a la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos (ICU), donde se le mantuvo sedada, luchando por su vida.

“Teníamos muchas personas rezando por nosotros”, dijo Nathan.

Ahora, a Beca le cuesta un poco leer de cerca, de vez en cuando tiene lapsus de memoria y está trabajando para mejorar algunos retos de motricidad fina y del habla. Pero ya empezó a viajar de nuevo, y en 2021 se fue a trabajar con niños en Zimbabue.

Muchas de las enfermeras conocían a los Sartori, como la enfermera registrada (RN) Joanne Norris y la RN Tina Lohmeyer. Otras personas llamaban para saber cómo estaba Beca.
