quality Frontline Hospital employees are ‘rock stars’ at looking out for patient safety When it comes to improving safety,

members of MGH&FC’s Patient Safety Committee share a common vision. You might call them “Empowered Finders” or “Defect Detectors.”

“They possess true dedication to project safety aims and are always willing to take on new tasks,” said Kris Davies, Kaizen Promotion Office associate for MGH&FC. “The purpose of the Patient Safety Committee is to identify patient safety risks and hazards throughout our Hospital District, while actively working on improving recognized processes to keep our patients free from harm.”

“The main focus of the Patient Safety Committee is to prevent harm to our patients and to encourage continuous improvement in patient care and treatment while reducing risks,” Davies said. Since early 2016, only frontline employees from across the Hospital District have comprised the Patient Safety Committee. “This group of frontline staff have diverse opinions, are willing to speak up (see something, say something) and maintain clear values with a shared vision for safety,” Davies added.

In 2016, the Committee focused on the “trapeze beds” Hospital employees use to transfer surgical patients from one unit to another at MGH. “The beds were not always in the lowest position during transfers, and would hit the top of the door frame, causing a potential risk to our patients. The Committee came up with a laminated placard that is placed on the trapeze when it is assembled, to remind staff to place the bed in its lowest position prior to transfer. We are able to measure the success of this practice by tracking the handoff forms from surgery to the floor,” Davies explained.

Other recent committee projects have involved identifying and eliminating potential trip hazards in some walkways; and providing special, bright-pink discharge instruction sheets to phlebotomy patients to improve the efficiency of their blood draws.

Successfully implementing the trapeze bed placards and the blood-band discharge instructions earned the Patient Safety Committee a “Rock Star Award” at a recent meeting of department heads.

For 2017, the Committee’s main focus will also encompass the Joint Commission’s top A laminated placard that is placed on the “trapeze” of an orthopedic bed when it is assembled, reminds staff to place the bed in its lowest position prior to transferring patients.

National Patient Safety Goal: Implement at least two ways to identify patients to ensure that each patient gets the correct medicine and treatment.

“I feel that our achievements relay a message to the public and patients alike – that we take their safety very seriously at MGH&FC, and will continue to strive in this way to put ‘patients first,’” Davies added.

Yellow and black safety tape was placed in an area of one of the Clinics to warn patients of transitions between a hard floor surface and a soft surface (carpet) to prevent falls for those who are unsteady on their feet.

Women are not immune to heart attacks At one time, heart attacks were considered a man’s disease, but according to the

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heart attacks are now the number one cause of death in both men and women. What’s important to know is that symptoms for women can differ from men’s, and can be mistaken for something less serious, such as acid reflux or the flu.

Signs of a heart attack in women: 1. Pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of your chest. This can last more than a few minutes, or go away and come back.

2. Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.

3. Shortness of breath – with or without chest discomfort.

4. Cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness.

5. The most common sign for both men and women is chest pain or discomfort, but women may also experience shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain.

The CDC advises women experiencing any of these symptoms to call 911 immediately and to get to a hospital.

While there is no foolproof way to prevent a heart attack, healthy habits can reduce your chances, even if heart disease runs in your family, and learning CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) can help save a life. Classes are available through MGH&FC’s Learning Center. Call (360) 427-3609 for information.

Healthy habits include: On the cover: MGH&FC’s Patient Safety Committee (PSC) identifies the need to communicate to pre-surgery patients more directly and effectively the importance of “blood bands” placed on them in their pre-op visit. The blood band is directly linked to the patient in case there is need of a blood transfusion during surgery. If the band gets damaged or removed prior to surgery, the patient must be re-drawn – adding time and cost to the procedure. PSC has phlebotomists provide patients with an instruction sheet at the time of the blood draw (shown on the cover) stating that if the band is removed, the patient will be redrawn at a cost to them, or a delay in care and possible rescheduling of services may occur. The purpose of the Patient Safety Committee is to identify patient safety risks and hazards throughout their care, and actively work on recognizing and improving processes to keep patients safe.

1. Eating plenty of vegetables and fruit and choosing foods low in saturated fat, trans fat and sodium.

2. Maintaining a healthy weight.

3. Including physical activity in your regular routine by slowly working up to at least 2.5 hours of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity every week, such as brisk walking.

4. Knowing the American Heart Association’s Guidelines for Physical Activity in Adults and children.

5. Avoiding excessive consumption of alcohol.

6. Getting at least eight hours of sleep every night.

7. Having routine medical exams.

quality MGH Family Health, Ankle and Foot Clinic offers quality podiatric care for all ages When Podiatrist John V. Rice, D.P.M., first

opened an office in Shelton to treat people suffering from foot and ankle issues, he was told to enjoy the slow trickle of patients while he could – because his practice would quickly grow.

“I remember watching my patient base grow from just a few to a hundred patients, and getting excited to see it. The staff and I celebrated with a cake when it reached 100,” said Dr. Rice, who is Board-certified in podiatric medicine.

Today, MGH&FC owns and operates the MGH Family Health, Ankle and Foot Clinic started

by Dr. Rice, where he and his original partner, James A. Wright, D.P.M., also Board certified, still provide quality podiatric care to patients of all ages – now each seeing as many as 30 patients a day – and performing surgeries weekly.

“It’s different going from being in charge to working for someone else, but medicine is a business that’s hard to predict. You have to do what is best for the patients,” added Dr. Rice.

Taking care of patients is what Dr. Rice enjoys the most, especially his elderly patients. “I enjoy their stories and hearing about the interesting lives they’ve led. One of my patients even told me he invented the cattle prod,” said Dr. Rice.

What matters most to Dr. Rice is treating patients with respect. “We treat people the way we’d like to be treated. Someday I’ll be sitting in that chair. Patients are people, and if you take good care of people, the business side will take care of itself,” he said.

Clinic Manager Peggy Moore agrees. She’s managed the Clinic for the past six years while also managing MGH Family Health on the other side. What Peggy said she enjoys most about the MGH Family Health, Ankle and Foot Clinic is that even though it’s undergone a lot of changes in recent years, Clinic staff and providers have handled the changes with grace and a willing spirit.

Some of these changes include transitioning from a manual to an electronic record keeping system, and closing down their second clinic in Olympia, which meant integrating staff from the second office and adjusting the Clinic structure and hours to accommodate patients.

“Some patients from the Olympia office stayed with us because of the superior care they receive,” said Moore, adding that her role is to help the doctors and staff keep things running as smoothly as possible.

“Problem-solving and helping the staff is what I love. I do whatever I can to facilitate excellent patient care,” she said.

The high volume of patients at the Clinic is what keeps Certified Medical Assistant Jesse Larrabee excited about her job.

“I love how fast-paced this clinic is. We see about 30 patients a day and I love to help with any kind of procedure. I really enjoy working with the patients and many procedures can be done right here in the office, including things like hammertoe repairs and the removal of ingrown toenails,” said Larrabee.

In addition, physicians Rice and Wright are part of MGH&FC’s “Living Well with Diabetes” team of experts who offer counseling and care to diabetic patients who suffer from foot issues related to this condition. Their expertise also includes the diagnosis and treatment of foot and ankle problems such as bunions, spurs, hammertoes, ingrown toenails, plantar fasciitis, sprains, and many other foot of ankle issues.

“The best tip the Clinic can offer,” said Larrabee, “is that patients wear shoes that provide good support, and avoid nonsupportive shoes like flip flops for everyday wear. The one thing flip flops are good for, according to the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), is protection from bacteria that can be contracted in spas, pools, or locker room showers.

As summer is quickly approaching, here are some other tips for summer foot care from the APMA: 1. Limit walking barefoot, which increases the chance of injury to the feet.

2. Wear shoes around the pool, beach, or locker room to prevent injuries and contracting of bacterial diseases.

3. Remember to apply sunscreen to exposed areas of the feet and ankles.

4. Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water throughout the day to minimize swelling of the feet caused by summer’s heat.

5. Keep blood flowing with periodic ankle flexes, toe wiggles, and calf stretches.

6. Wear protective footwear when playing in water where foot injuries might occur.

7. If you injure your feet while on vacation, get medical attention immediately instead of waiting until you get home.

8. Carry a first aid kit that includes sterile bandages, band-aids and antibiotic cream, and bring along a pair of flip flops that can be slipped on quickly in the shower, or at spas and pools.

community Volunteers honored for service during National Volunteer Month More than 80 volunteers were honored at this year’s Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon in April. Out of that group, 27 received the President’s Volunteer Service Award. “This is an exciting time,” said Lonnie Hatman, volunteer coordinator at MGH&FC. “It’s the first year we have given this award, which requires a very close tracking of hours volunteered.” The President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) recognizes, celebrates and holds up as role models those who are making a positive impact as engaged MGH&FC hosted a luncheon thanking and deeply committed volunteers. Awardenables community organizations that are nationally-approved Certifying/Leadership Organizations to amplify their gratitude by joining with the President of the United States to thank their most dedicated volunteers.

The three categories of volunteered hours awarded are: 1) more than 500 hours Gold, 2) 250 to 499 hours - Silver, and 3) 100 to 249 hours - Bronze.

Employee volunteer program creates community connections On Tuesday afternoons after work, MGH&FC employees, Peggy Johnson and Susan Daniel volunteer at Treasures, the Hospital Foundation’s thrift store.

Both women joined the Treasures Thrift Store volunteer team in February, when MGH&FC launched an initiative to encourage Hospital employees to become more connected to the community through volunteerism.

The two women selected Treasures because store hours fit in well with their work schedules.

Both women said their favorite things about volunteering at Treasures was getting to know customers, and working with Volunteer Coordinator Lois Hunter, who’s volunteered her time at the store for 23 years.

Treasures re-sells a large assortment of donated items, including clothing and household goods at reasonable prices, which both appreciate because their work not only benefits Hospital programs, but also helps people in the community.

“Life sometime gets so busy, you just need a reminder that there’s a need to get involved because people depend on you, and that’s what MGH did for us,” Daniel said.

“It’s satisfying to help others,” said Johnson, adding, “It’s so much fun – it doesn’t seem like work.

Treasures Thrift Store is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and located at 305 W. Railroad Avenue in downtown Shelton. Proceeds from sales are used to purchase medical equipment for the Hospital and Clinics, with more than $487,000 donated over the past four years. Shadow box in Birth Center highlights hand-made quilts When Kris Gaa, R.N., team manager for MGH&FC’s Birth Center, told Matt Eddins, whose wife had just given birth there, about her long-held desire to have a shadow box created for The Birth Center to display donated baby quilts, she had no idea he would surprise her a few months later with a three by four-foot oak-and-plexiglas display box, which he handcrafted.

Hand-made quilts and blankets donated by local community members are presented to each baby born in The Birth Center at Mason General Hospital, and have been for as long as Gaa can remember. The shadow box can display up to six quilts, as well as some baby hats, which are also hand-knitted and donated. Other hand-made, donated items include crocheted or knitted baby blankets, receiving blankets, and burping pads.

“The quilts are so beautiful, and I had been trying for years to find someone to create a box to show them off, and he actually did it,” said Gaa. Eddins, a firefighter at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, and his wife, Nicole Eddins, pharmacist and senior director of

“Some women have told us they chose this Hospital to deliver in partly because of the quilts. It’s a tradition that they love,” she said, adding, “and people tell us they still have the quilts, some as long as 12 years later!”

Around 300 quilts are handed out each year in The Birth Center, which means there are a lot of volunteers working on quilts and hats to keep up with the demand. Houses built before 1978 probably had lead in paint that can result in paint chips or dust that can be inhaled or eaten by a small child who is crawling. Toys from that era may also have lead paint. Before leaded gas was banned, residue was on the surface of filling stations, parking lots, driveways and nearby soil. Persons working in home renovation, refining and many manufacturing industries are exposed to some level of lead. And certain activities such as stained glass making, pottery and painting can lead to exposure.

Several recent studies have focused on the phenolic compounds in cocoa that are strong antioxidants–effective for lowering LDL cholesterol and reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. According to one Harvard study, subjects drinking two cups of cocoa a day helped improve blood flow to certain parts of the brain, reducing the risk of dementia. The best chocolate for health benefits is high in cacao, low in sugar.

Save the Date – Children’s Immunization Clinic at Oakland Bay Pediatrics in August.

Vaccinating school age children against childhood diseases protects all children and unites the community by empowering people in the goal of exceptional health.

MGH Oakland Bay Pediatrics, in partnership with Shelton School District, will hold an Immunization Clinic on Saturday, August 12, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Oakland Bay Pediatrics, 247 Professional Way in Shelton.

The Immunization Clinic is open to all school age children, five years and up, in Mason County. Contracted insurances are accepted, and advance registration is required.

2017 Cancer Wellness Workshops MGH&FC and Harmony Hill Retreat Center continue to offer a series of Cancer Wellness Workshops through August 2017. Classes meet every second Wednesday of the month from 3 to 5:30 p.m. in the Pershing Meeting Room at MGH. Featuring various topics and speakers, the Cancer Wellness program is free and open to anyone with a cancer diagnosis, those in survivorship, their companions, and caregivers.

Hosted by MGH&FC and facilitated by Harmony Hill faculty member Melissa Layer, the workshops aim to help individuals feel a sense of control in their lives. By building confidence and emotional strength, you’ll learn how to respond to stress and develop new skills for healing. Classes include supportive group discussions, journaling, gentle movement and creative arts to promote self-care and positive change.

Pneumonia: How serious is it?

Symptoms of pneumonia vary widely, but the consequences can be

severe for older adults, children under two and individuals with an underlying medical condition or weakened immune system.

Persons suffering lingering symptoms of a cold or the flu may have pneumonia. Young children may show few symptoms except a cough, fever and vomiting. Older persons may actually have a lower than normal body temperature. But high-risk persons must be monitored closely.

Olympic Physicians wins Qualis Award of Excellence MGH Olympic Physicians has once again

been recognized for excellence in patient care and outstanding achievement in advancing community health care.

Qualis Health, one of the nation’s leading population health management organizations, recently honored MGH Olympic Physicians with the Award of Excellence in Healthcare Quality for its work in Improving the Rate of Colon Cancer Screening in a Rural Underserved Population – Patients 50 - 75 Years Old. This recognition was given for the Clinic’s intensive work to provide screenings to reduce the risk of colon cancer for all patients 50 to 75 years of age in the Hospital District, regardless of their health insurance status or ability to pay for cancer screening.

Through multiple outreach efforts and partnering with patients, the aim was to provide education and screening to lower the risk and incidence of colon cancer in our community. Olympic Physicians was able to implement a number of resources, by means of tracking patients from their medical records, using a reminder system to call patients for testing and follow-up, mass-mailing home-screening test kits to patients, and lowering health care costs with sliding fee schedules and uncompensated care programs.

“Our goal was to educate the community on how to prevent colon cancer and assist patients in choosing the colon cancer screening test that fits their needs,” said Mark L. Schlauderaff, M.D., board-certified in internal medicine.

The data speaks for itself. Many more patients are now getting screened for colon cancer – an increase from 22 percent in 2014 to its present 62.7 percent – and this project has played a big part in that improvement.

The costs associated with colon cancer treatment benefit the community, and Olympic Physicians continues to lower costs associated with screening by establishing a sliding income-based fee, finding lower-cost

clinics for patients needing colonoscopies, and providing information about uncompensated care programs.

Screening catches colonic polyps before they can develop into cancer, saving patients the stress of a cancer diagnosis and the expense of treatment. Prevention is key, and Olympic Physicians continues toward that goal by striving for excellence in patient-centered care. The Qualis Award of Excellence was presented to MGH Olympic Physicians at the 2017 Northwest Patient Safety Conference in early-May at the Seattle Marriott.

What hopes to be an annual event MGH&FC hosted its first (in a long time) All Community Health Event in May. There was something for everyone – from free health screenings (mammograms, blood pressure, diabetes screenings, etc.) to free craft events for kids. Steve Anderson, R.N., and Allen Millard, M.D., board-certified in family medicine, hosted the Men’s Health Event table. “We wanted to reach out to local men about their need to be proactive in staying healthy,” said Dr. Millard.

Neumonía ¿Cuan seria es?
