Key Stage 3 Virtual Exhibition - 2021 - MGGS

Year 7 students have been looking at the formal elements in Art this year, beginning their Art experience by developing observational drawing skills and adding tone to make their drawings look realistic.

They then focused on artist Michael Craig Martin, responding with bold colour work and exploring composition to make everyday items look exciting!

During the school closure period, year 7 had the opportunity to develop their photography skills, undertaking a series of challenges which then led to them creating a personal photographic response to the theme of “Home”.

Upon their return to school, Pop Artist Roy Lichtenstein was the inspiration for some unique and interesting collage work. (the annual hat parade task was also completed by year 7 this year, however has featured in it’s own virtual exhibition in the MGGS blog, so do take a look!)

Year 8 students began their year in Art by looking at artist Mark Powell and his work based on studies of hands. It was an opportunity to refine some of their drawing and photography skills and look at a very relevant subject matter!

The rest of the year has had a focus on Art history, specifically focusing on the Art movements: Expressionism, Cubism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. Students have been understanding the importance of context and have had the opportunity to develop their analytical skills through written and visual responses to the Art movements, using a range of media and techniques, adapted to allow for working in non-specialist rooms this year!

Year 9 have spent this year undertaking an extended project entitled “Me, My Selfie and I”, looking at themselves and responding in a personal way to a variety of different artists.

They have spent time understanding the proportions of the face and how to use a grid to improve accuracy in their work.

Artists Heikki Leis and Cristina Troufa have provided inspiration to their Art in response to their new daily routines of wearing face masks as well as reflecting on their emotions surrounding events of the past year.

Students have finished their KS3 Art education looking at the bright and fun art work of Sarah Beetson in their mixed media outcomes.
