We look forward to hosting you on Saturday, December 10th for Santa’s Brunch, and then we will see the adults on Friday, December 16th for the Member Holiday Party. You will find more information inside the newsletter.

The MGC 105th Annual Meeting was held on Thursday, November 17th. We had almost 60 people attending which was a nice turnout. The Committee Chairs and other speakers did a wonderful job updating key actions from the past year and giving the members a sneak peek of the year ahead. If you were unable to attend the Annual Meeting, a video of the meeting has been posted to the member section of MGC’s website.

During the GM’s portion of the Annual Meeting presentation, I announced the birth of our third grandson (November 8) who lives in Maple Grove. All three boys are under 3! Mother and baby are doing great. I followed up with a few initial takeaways from the member survey. Expect a Summary soon on the “strengths to maintain”, “areas needing improvement”, and “other member survey themes”.

I also touched base on our new 2023 Master Calendar. It will list all golf tournaments, golf course closures, holiday events, and Club events in one document. Expect to see this arrive in the mail in late December.

Please mark your calendars for Friday, May 12th to attend the 100th anniversary of the Grand Opening of our iconic clubhouse. We will host a fun golf tournament that afternoon and finish with a lavish dinner in the Ballroom. More information to follow.

Finally, I reported the excellent news regarding the Employee Holiday Appreciation Fund.

95% of our membership participated, which is an excellent example of your support. On behalf of all the staff, we thank you for your generosity. This is an ideal way for the Club to be an “Employer of Choice”. This gift will certainly assist with employee retention – which is so important today.

A Historical Tour of MGC

Joel Goldstrand In 1973, the Club reached out to the PGA Tour ranks for 34-year-old Joel Goldstrand. Goldstrand’s Worthington high school golf team won the state championship his senior year, and in the fall of 1957 he enrolled at the University of Houston, where Coach Dave Williams was beginning his decades-long run of dominance. Goldstrand joined the PGA Tour in 1965. His best year was 1969, when he finished 72nd on the money list. In 1970 he tied for 12th at the U.S. Open at Hazeltine, but by then he and his wife had a young family and traveling was becoming more difficult. When he was asked to apply for the Minneapolis Golf Club head pro job, it was an easy decision.

In 1975, Goldstrand created the Minnesota Golf Champions tournament, modeled after the Masters and open to all of the state’s past champions. Goldstrand had begun a small sideline as a golf course architect in 1969, but when his design of The Pines at Grandview Lodge in Brainerd became a huge success in 1989, he decided to give up his club pro job to devote full time to golf architecture.

Goldstrand’s last full year at MGC was 1989. He stayed around for part of 1990 to help his replacement, Dave Haberle, make the transition to head pro.

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH

Austin Eccleton - Assistant Golf Pro Austin joined the MGC team in April of 2021. He grew up in Michigan and attended University of Detroit Mercy & Grand Valley State University. Austin enjoys working at MGC because of our great membership and the staff he gets to work with.

FUN FACT: Austin has played 81 holes of golf in one day!

CONGRATULATIONS to Ryan Paulson! Ryan was named Minnesota Section PGA Teacher of the Year.

CONGRATULATIONS to Maureen Bergland for having her first hole in 1 on number 4 on October 29th!!!!
