Dear employees and partners of MF Shipping Group What a year we’ve had! 2023 has once again been a year full of challenges and opportunities. As we close this chapter, we want to take a moment to reflect on the adventurous journey we’ve been on and look ahead to what the new year has in store for us. In 2023, we faced global issues, from conflict situations to significant climate changes, making us even more aware of the vulnerability of peace and stability. Migration remained a prominent theme, with the rights and dignity of individuals at stake. During these challenges, we want to acknowledge those facing difficulties and cherish our humanity. Life is like the sea, full of waves of new beginnings and sometimes difficult farewells. We said goodbye to the Nordic Diana and the Romantika, witnessed the resurrection of the Helge, and warmly welcomed the Thun Resource. We also bid farewell to colleagues and welcomed new ones. Over the past year, we took the time to recalibrate our mission, vision, and core values together with you. We aim to maintain our people-centric approach and culture, while being aware of our joint mission to work with partners towards a cleaner and greener shipping industry. On a personal note, I, Karin, face new challenges. Starting in the new year, I will be appointed as the chairperson of ECSA (European Community Shipowners Association) in 2024. This brings more responsibilities, and I will, for instance, be spending more time in Brussels. However, it is a recognition

of our commitment to sustainability and the well-being of seafarers. I want to express my gratitude for the support from Theo, the members of the management team, and our partners. And then, we have something special on the horizon: our 30th anniversary in 2024! A milestone achieved through the tireless efforts of both seafarers and office staff, many of you faithfully on board for many years. Together with our partners, you form the core of our ‘family of people.’ In this festive December message, we want to convey our sincere appreciation for each of you. Together, we make up MF Shipping Group, and we are thankful for your ongoing support and dedication.

Keep it in the A story of seafaring generations. At MF Shipping Group we are proud to have a crew on board our vessels that not only work together, but share family ties! To explore these bonds, we interview these family members and reveal the unique journeys that brought them to our company. This edition tells the story of father Aleksei and son Matvei Uzliakov. Aleksei has been a captain with MF Shipping Group for almost 17 years and has passed on his passion to his son Matvei. Matvei has completed two terms as an intern and there are more to come! How did you end up in the Maritime world? Aleksei: I live close to the second largest freshwater lake in Europe, Lake Onega, and this was also a point that made me choose my path. My grandfather often took me fishing in a small boat. At the age of 12 I joined the Maritime Club for young people who are interested in the maritime industry. We learn a lot of interesting things there, how to tie knots, how to rig the sails, how to use the flags, some nautical subjects and so on. In the summer we sail on a small vessel, belong to the club, through the lakes and rivers and can perform some duties on board and see/visit some other interesting places and cities. It was a time of vivid and unforgettable impressions. Based on these impressions, I chose my future profession and enrolled in the Nautical College. Matvei: My name is Matvei. I’m 20 years old and have just started my career as a seafarer. Now I am a 3rd year student at the Nizhniy Novgorod Maritime Academy. My father works as a captain and I’ve heard a lot of interesting stories from him about the life of a seafarer and I was really interested, which is why I chose the same way. In my first ship practice I was on two ships “mv Alice” and “mv Greenland” as a deck cadet (thanks a lot MF Shipping Group for such opportunity!). It was an unforgettable experience!

Did you always wanted to be a Captain? Aleksei: The easiest way to answer this question is to say “yes” when you’re young - you’re full of dreams and it seems very romantic. But when you start working on vessels, see this job with your own eyes, see how difficult and sometimes nervous the work of a captain is, with a lot of responsibility for everything that happens on board, you start to ask yourself: “Am I good enough for this position, Am I able to do all this work?” But after all the doubts you realise that you can do it! Matvei: I’ve been thinking about choosing my future career for a long time in different directions, but finally everything I’ve heard from my father and from other sources (internet, films, etc..) has led me to this way (of course some romantic side about the seafaring life is present). I think everyone, especially at my age, imagines themselves in a higher rank and dreams of being in command of a ship.
What do you like most about your job? Aleksei: The answer is very simple; I like my job, everything we do from day to day, carrying different cargoes, visiting different ports, sometimes with very spectacular views, meeting interesting people of different nationalities, experiencing bad or good weather, seeing sunset and sunrise, all these things bring happiness to our lives and make the seafarer’s job very interesting.

Matvei: I think it’s about discovering something new for yourself, visiting new countries you’ve never been to before, meeting different people and making new friends, seeing attractive sea, coastal views and nature around you. Learning something new and becoming a professional seafarer.
What was the best moment in your career so far? Aleksei: Several moments that shine in my memory, one of when on board one of the vessels when we passed under the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge, our vessel was the last cargo ship to enter Sydney’s commercial harbour (commercial harbour has been moved away from the city). At the same moment it was a 75th anniversary celebration of this bridge. And lots of people on land and on small boats, helicopters flying around, fireworks, laser show. For me it was really attractive to see. Another great moment was my first voyage as captain. It was exciting. Matvei: It was the moment I boarded the vessel everything looks very unusual to me and I want to know how the ship is constructed and how the crew work there.
Have you ever sailed together on a vessel? Aleksei: Yes, MF Shipping Group gave my son the opportunity to start his seafaring career with me on the mv Alice (many thanks to Anita Gerritsen for this!). He stayed on board for about 5 weeks and then was transferred to another ship to continue his training, but it was a nice time. Matvei: As my father said: We’ve sailed together already during my first internship. It was a wonderful experience as I learnt a lot about working as an AB on deck, steering the ship, mooring operations, company procedures and going through the Seagull CBT courses.
What did you learn from each other? Aleksei: Young people know more about new apps, electronics, etc. and can help you a lot and give you some advice, on the other hand the older generation can give them more practical advice. Matvei: I learned a lot from my father, he has a lot of experience and he guided me during my first steps on board the vessel.

How do you differ in terms of work? Aleksei: My son, just at the beginning of his seafaring career, got his 2nd practice, the first one was on rowing boats, the second one already on ships. He was impressed by the seafaring life. Matvei: The main difference is experience. I’m just starting out in my career and it’s genuinely nice to have a father around who can show and explain different things in different situations.
Do you ever consult each other during a term? Aleksei: Mostly I do it because I can give him some advice on how to carry out a task in the most effective and safe way.
Do you have a family of your own? Aleksei: Yes, I am proudly married to my wife for 22 years and we have 3 sons and a dog (also a boy :) ). Matvei is single now, but we are close! The oldest son has chosen his career as a sailor and two other sons are still at school. They are 14 and 11 years old.
How does your family feel about you both doing this job? Matvei: My mother is happy that my father and I are sailors. She thinks it is a dignified profession, even if risky.
Would you recommend this work for your children?
What are you proud of? Aleksei: I proud of my family and children, proud that I do my job as best as I can. Matvei: I’m proud to have chosen this profession and starting the path to my dream.

Aleksei: I don’t regret anything that has happened in my life and I wouldn’t want to change anything, even if I had the chance. Matvei: It’s hard for me to imagine myself in any other profession and if I had the chance to change everything, I would.

Aleksei: We live in a rapidly changing world and technology is developing so fast that some things that were hard to imagine 10 years ago are already our present, especially in the maritime sector. Green technology, LNG and electric powered ships, autonomous ships, sails back on some merchant vessels, and some more interesting solutions will certainly appear on ships within the next few years, as well as stricter regulations regarding emissions/pollution from vessels. Matvei: I think it’s going to be autonomous vessels and ports soon. There are a lot of prospective projects in this direction, but we are still far from complete automation. I think seafarers will be in demand for many years to come.

What advice do you have for the new generation? Aleksei: Try to learn something new every time, stay positive and look to the future with optimism. Matvei: I think I’m the new generation and the advice I’d like to give myself is “If you have a goal, go for it”.

Bureau Veritas in close cooperation with MF Shipping Group Maintaining a high standard of maritime excellence requires a close relationship with a Class Bureau. MF Shipping Group has been working with Bureau Veritas for several years, which means that we are subject to Bureau Veritas audits both on board the vessels we manage and at our office in Farmsum. Bureau Veritas consists of many different departments and we would like to take a closer look at the relationship with MF Shipping Group, highlighting the many departments of this esteemed organisation. That is why we approached four departments within Bureau Veritas and invited them to share insights into their operations and how each department works.
Marine Operational Centre North European Zone The Marine Operational Centre represents the Head Office of Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore for the North European Zone and manages the Class and Statutory certification of all Bureau Veritas classed vessels in this area as well as the System Certification of vessels and companies located in this area. MF Shipping Group is a valued client of Bureau Veritas Netherlands, with a significant fleet of Dutch flag vessels, which means that MF Shipping Groups superintendents are in regular contact with one of the eight staff members at the Marine Operational Centre. They are in contact on all kind of operational issues like requests for surveys and audits, advise on compliance with new statutory regulations coming

into force and requests for exemptions and/or short term statutory certificates in case of malfunctioning equipment on board the vessel. The Marine Operational Centre also assesses the feasibility of remote surveys for minor Class and Statutory matters. The Marine Operational Centre also acts as a liaison between the client and various parties such as the planning authority and the Flagstate. For Dutch Flag specifically the Marine Operational Centre is the focal point in which capacity it is authorized to agree to the issuance of short-term statutory certificates outside office hours. As the Marine Operational Centre can be contacted outside office hours on weekdays and weekends, this minimizes the delay for shipmanagers in the event of equipment failure on board the vessel outside normal working hours.
Bureau Veritas Rotterdam’s Environmental Compliance Department
Plan Approval Office A plan approval office is the department of a classification society responsible for reviewing drawings and documents. This is done for both class rules and statutory conventions and regulations. At Bureau Veritas in Rotterdam, our Plan Approval Office consists of approximately 40 technical staff involved in all disciplines covered by the class rules. This means that we have engineers working on hull structure, machinery, electrical and automation, stability and safety.
Koen Batteram & Jasper Batteram - Environmental Compliance Department
At Bureau Veritas we have had a dedicated Environmental Compliance Department in our Rotterdam office since 2019. Clients will contact our colleagues in this department for various C02 emissions reporting and verification regulations. We are the main contact for MFSG for regulations such as: EU MRV, IMO DCS, EEXI, IHM. It’s important to realise that all new regulations requiring data from vessels place an additional workload on personnel on board, so we support the decision of MFSG development of having one person on shore who is responsible for and acts as the primary point of contact with the class for CO2 emissions verification, as this simplifies the reporting and verification process. As verifiers, we find that the quality of reported emissions data is improved where such a person is in place. Although our primary point of contact is your Environmental Specialist, Jezabel Ramirez, we aim to be visible and available to anyone with questions about the various environmental regulations. Everyone in the maritime industry is noticing that the speed at which regulations are being implemented to make shipping more sustainable is increasing, so it is important that parties share information as effectively as possible to ensure compliance. So don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have about environmental legislation!
We deal with both new building projects and ships in service. Especially for ships in service projects, contact with the MFSG technical department and superintendents is essential. When it comes to changes and modifications, it is important to define the scope of work, the rules and regulations that apply, and the period within which everything must be completed. This means that clear communication with you, the customer, needs to be organised from the outset. Generally, this communication starts with you contacting our Customer Support Centre. Depending on the nature of the project, the appropriate plan approval staff will be involved. For large conversion projects, we have a dedicated conversion manager who will discuss and help you with all these issues. Many of the projects deal with the decarbonization of shipping and other environmental regulations that have come into force over the years. This means we are involved in several projects involving, for example, methanol as a fuel, battery systems and wind-assisted propulsion. As these technologies are still under development and the regulations are constantly evolving, the projects are challenging but also interesting. At Bureau Veritas we are involved in developing class rules, training our staff and gaining experience in these areas to be ready for the future and to support you.

New Construction Department Over the years, a number of new buildings have been built in the northern part of the Netherlands for MF Shipping and its affiliated owners. Many of these vessels were built at Ferus Smit Shipyards and classed by Bureau Veritas. From Bureau Veritas’ point of view, we are pleased that the cooperation is continuing. Bureau Veritas is involved in the classification of 10 new-building projects at Ferus Smit Shipyards with MF Shipping.
As the new building program is very extensive, all aspects of the new building process take place simultaneously. Hull construction, outfitting and commissioning. Together with MF Shipping Group and Ferus Smit, we are pleased to be able to contribute to the construction of these vessels and look forward to working together in the years to come.

Per at the Helm Per Sundberg, recently retired after a distinguished career as a lawyer and head of the district court on Gotland. He approached MF Shipping Group via Joakim Lund with a unique dream - to experience sailing on a cargo ship. And sometimes you can make a wish come true, we were happy to help and Captain Cor Verheul welcomed Mr Sundberg aboard the Thun Lidkoping. In this issue, we invite you to read his fascinating story of his voyage onboard!
At the beginning of September I had the opportunity to accompany the Thun Lidkoping as a passenger on a voyage across the Irish Sea. When I was 17 years old, 50 years ago, I worked for a few weeks as an inexperienced deckhand on a small cargo ship in the Baltic Sea. All my life since then I have worked in offices in Sweden, and it was a dream of mine to go back to sea. A lot has happened in shipping since then, not least in terms of technology and safety. After a few days of waiting in Dublin it was time to muster and the ship then went to Milford Haven to load aviation fuel. Then back to Dublin for unloading. On board I was received by Captain Cor Verheul and his crew. I was very well taken care of and got to know a lot about the ship, work on board, sailor life and everyday life at sea. I got to participate in both loading and unloading, arrival and departure, throwing away, anchoring, and piloting, etc. There were intense days and work around the clock. The crew comes from different parts of the world, and it was exciting to hear about their different backgrounds and experiences.
We were lucky with the weather, with bright sun and a calm sea. I understand it’s not always so on the Irish Sea. At one point we saw some dolphins following our ship. After nice and eventful days on board, it was time to leave the ship and travel home to Sweden again. At the airport in Dublin, I could see that the aircraft I was to travel with was refueled with fuel from the company that Thun Lidkoping was shipping for. A very exciting trip and an unforgettable experience.

How are you doing? Evgeny Kizimov
In this topic, one of our crew members gets interviewed to tell a bit more about themselves. This edition we continue our story with Evgeny Kizimov, 36 years old and currently sailing as Captain on the mv Iceland.
HOW IT ALL STARTED At the beginning of November 2023, I received a request from our company to introduce myself in the Fleetlog magazine. Why me? It is a curious question! I have never written about myself before! I was a bit embarrassed. Thanks to my family, they help me to realise that it is an opportunity to share my journey and a chance to have an interesting and unique experience. I joined MF Shipping Group in 2017 as a Chief Officer, and I am currently the master of the cement carrier “mv Iceland”. My name is Evgeny Kizimov and this is where my story begins. AWAY BACK Standing here on the bridge of the vessel, I try to remember where my seafaring path began. I am quite sure that my father played a significant role in this. He was a professional sailor. He told me a lot of riveting stories and sparked my dream. The location of my hometown on the shore of Lake Onego also contributed to my love of the sea. As early as primary school, I knew what I wanted to be: a Captain! The decision to study at a maritime university for five long years was a foregone conclusion. However, I really enjoyed those times and remember them as one of the best adventures of my life! CONVICTIONS AND PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT. Like most of you, the university gave me the knowledge I needed, but the experience was gained by studying, making a lot of mistakes and fighting with oneself. I must give credit where credit is due, I never stop studying and learning from an experience. I respect those who become wise at their own expense and never give up. I see my mission as thriving on my journey through life, learning life’s lessons along the way, inspiring others to achieve their greatness and leaving the world a better place than I found it!

HOW ARE YOU MANAGING WORK-LIFE BALANCE THESE DAYS? Stress is more or less a normal part of our lives these days. However, not everyone can cope with the challenges of life and work daily. I’m no exception. To develop a better response to stressful situations and to maintain a good work-life balance, I do sports, including extreme sports such as mountain climbing, rafting, mountain biking and snowmobiling. Why do you do this? Simple reason! Imagine feeling unstoppable. Having the skills, drive and resilience to overcome obstacles and achieve anything you want. Imagine knowing what it would take to get the best out of yourself, accepting the risks of failure and believing you could do it. This is why I do what I do and why I love it! HOW HAS YOUR WORK BEEN GOING? ANY RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS OR CHALLENGES YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? I recently graduated from the World Maritime University with a Postgraduate Diploma in Executive Maritime Management. What an exciting and challenging journey! It has been the experience of a lifetime. The study gave me a balanced view of the maritime business, looking at such diverse aspects as fundamental maritime economics and contemporary Maritime Law, shipping market and financial management, organizational behavior and leadership, safe and sustainable shipping. There was so much to take in! But the biggest challenge was certainly time management. So, after passing the final exam in September 2023, I exhaled with a sense of satisfaction and pride! “Well done,” I said to myself! MY GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT OUTSIDE OF WORK My family often say that I am the best son, father and husband... Could be considered the greatest achievement outside of work :). Do you agree?
A ship at harbor is safe, but that’s not what ships are for WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE DESTINATIONS TO SAIL TO, AND WHY? “Paella... Tapas... Flamenco... Football... Siestas... Night adventures” - yes, I am thinking of Spain. And that says it all! WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST FASCINATING ABOUT YOUR ROLE AT SEA? Being responsible... What does it mean to me? Start by taking care of yourself. Do the things that need to be done every day. Help others. Care enough to make others feel happy and safe while doing their jobs. Tell the truth to others and to yourself. Acknowledge your mistakes and do your best to correct them. Develop self-reflection and self-awareness. Never give up! WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE UPCOMING MONTHS? ANY GOALS OR ASPIRATIONS YOU’RE WORKING TOWARDS? At the time I’m writing this article, it’s about a month until New Year 2024 and my plans are simple: I want my family and friends to have some nice presents and feel my concern, so that is one of the first things I have to prepare. And since I will be on board during the festivities, I will make sure the crew is in good spirits while we continue to do our job and meet the needs of our customers. WHAT WOULD YOUR PARTNER, KIDS, OR FRIENDS SAY ABOUT YOU IF WE ASKED THEM? “Keenly knowledgeable” - my partner would notice. “Jovial and joking” - my friends would echo. “The most loved” - would murmur my child. INSTEAD OF EPILOGUE “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams,” said Eleanor Roosevelt. We all have dreams and believe we can achieve them. But it takes a lot of effort to make our dreams come true. It is a hard daily work, a self-discipline and a great motivation that determines your journey. It is what makes your path valuable to you. Whenever you take a close look at simple everyday steps that people take, you can see movements towards such dreams, and seafarers are no exception...

The Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) regulation is a significant piece of legislation within the European Union (EU) that aims to combat climate change by regulating and monitoring greenhouse gas emissions from shipping activities. This regulation, which came into effect on 2017, requires ships above 5000 GT, operating within the EU or to and from EU ports, to accurately monitor and report their emissions data. The monitoring plan describes the respective vessel and its installed combustion machinery (main engines, auxiliary engines, inert gas, boilers), types of fuels used, monitoring methods applied and other relevant information. To ensure compliance, this data is then subject to verification by accredited entities.

From the 1st of January 2025 general cargo vessels and offshore vessels between 5000 GT - 400 GT will be included in the EU MRV. Other ship types will be decided in a review in 20242025. The EU MRV regulation covers carbon dioxide (CO2), and as of 1- January-2024, the scope has been extended to methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. The EU MRV is linked to the EU ETS, as described in the September issue of the Fleetlog. The difference is that the EU MRV data is required on a ship-by-ship basis; in the EU ETS, the data is aggregated at a company level.

Why does accurate data registration matter on board and ashore? Seafarers play a central role in the accurate registration of emissions data, as they are responsible for implementing the monitoring and reporting procedures on ships. This includes measuring fuel consumption, voyage information, and other relevant data. Ensuring the accuracy of this information
is essential, as it forms the foundation for effective emission reduction efforts and regulatory compliance. The importance of accurate data registration by seafarers cannot be overstated within the context of the EU MRV regulation. There are several key reasons for this:
Regulatory Compliance: Seafarers, shipowners and ship managers must adhere to the EU MRV regulation to avoid sanctions. Accurate data registration is crucial for complying with this legislation and demonstrating commitment to environmental responsibility.
Incentives for improvement: the data collected under the EU MRV regulation can serve as a basis for future environmental policies and initiatives. Accurate registration can help identify areas for improvement, encourage the development of more eco-friendly shipping practices, and potentially lead to incentives for reducing emissions.
Global Implications: The EU MRV regulation’s impact extends beyond the EU, as it encourages other regions and countries to adopt similar measures. Accurate data registration sets an example for global maritime emissions monitoring and reporting, which is crucial in the fight against climate change.

The Passion of.... Henriette Kleefman
Many people have hobbies they enjoy in their spare time, but a hobby is not to be confused with a passion. A passion is something you can’t live without, something that becomes a significant part of your life and fills you with immense joy and energy. While those at MF Shipping Group display their passion for the maritime industry daily, let’s explore the passions of our colleagues in other areas. In this issue we feature Henriëtte Kleefman, planning consultant in the Crew Department. Besides being a dependable colleague, she spends all her free time with her horses. Her dedication to her horses is truly remarkable!
Henriette is 34 years old and lives in Siddeburen, a small town in the province of Groningen. She has been crazy about horses since she was a little girl. And the love for horses has never faded. At the age of 17 she bought her first horse, a Friesian stallion called Tjebbe. “Once you get to know Friesian horses, you don’t want to have any other breed in your stable,” says Henriette, explaining why her passion is more than just a hobby. “With their proud and imposing appearance, the black pearls, as they are called, have spread all over the world. Symbolizing strength and elegance, they steal hearts with their lively and friendly nature. The Friesian horse is a real eye-catcher, appearing in famous Hollywood films, in shows and in sport up to the highest international level.” For Henriette, it’s a way of life and working towards a goal: “At Stal van ‘t Geerland we now have about 30 Friesian horses in our stable. We breed Friesian horses and are expecting 6 foals next year. We raise them and when they are three years old, they go to inspection and then sport. We ride them ourselves and then take them to compete, and we are always trying to improve. The aim of each horse is to ride it to a certain level of dressage and then to give it the predicate for the sport.

One of our dreams is to take one of the horses to the highest level of dressage - the Grand Prix”. Unlike other colleagues who resign, you will still see Henriëtte in the office. In addition to her activities for her own company, she will be supporting the Crew Department in, among other things, optimizing various processes, such as efficient crew scheduling, crew cost control and operational efficiency. Henriette explains: “Last summer I decided to start my own business, combining horse riding and business services. I recently started to take my hobby with horses to a professional level, combining it with some of my current responsibilities at MF Shipping Group.”
Thanks to the recent change in her career, she also has more time to devote to her passion: “I can be found in the stable every day and am responsible for all the stable management. Every morning I feed and check the horses before getting on with the rest of the work. I currently work 3 days for MF and the rest of the time I spend with the horses. Mainly grooming and training our own horses but also those of other owners.” But of course, you also need regular training to keep up to date. So Henriette also finds the time to train, it is clear that she is all about her passion; “Last year I did some training/ courses. For example, I am now allowed to train other riders. I have also done a course so that I can supervise how to get mares pregnant, and I can now do the ultrasounds myself. I have also recently started a health screening service where I give advice to other horse owners on how to improve the management of their horses.”
As if that wasn’t enough, she has also completed a course to become an Equestrian Coach. “Horse coaching is a form of coaching where the horse is used to coach people. The coach uses the natural behavior of the horse. Horses cannot talk like humans, but they communicate with each other all the time. And in an Equine Coaching session they do the same with you. They respond non-verbally, instinctively and intuitively to your body language. Through the feedback the horse gives you during a session, you gain (more) insight into your actions, behavior or beliefs and their consequences. We can then apply this to your daily life. You will find that you become more aware of your environment, your own role in it and what you might be able or want to change.”

AB J. Pinero On board mv Ireland, the spotlights were on AB Jonathan Pinero who received his jubilee gifts from Captain A. Kalashnikov. Mr. Pinero started his career on mv Jolie Brise in December 2010 and has since sailed on various vessels. In recent years he served on board Cement Carrier mv Ireland. We would like to express our gratitude and appreciation for his loyalty throughout the years.
AB E. Tined Surprise! It was confetti all over on board mv Vestanhav in celebration of the 12.5-year jubilee of AB Enrico Tined. Mr. Tined did not see this coming as he was handed over his certificate and present during an abandon ship drill. Enrico Tined is a very experienced AB and has been serving on board mv Vestanhav since 2014 already. He has also proved that he can step in as a Cook in case of emergency and when there are big repairs to be done, he can assist the Fitter with welding as well. We are proud to have such a reliable, flexible, and all-round AB on board for so long and are looking forward to continuing our collaboration in the future.

C/E. D. Sokolov Smiles al around on board mv Wisby Wave, where the whole crew joined in celebrating C/E Dmitrii Sokolov’s 12.5-year anniversary. There was a delicious looking cake to mark the occasion and the Christmas décor added to the festive atmosphere. Mr. Sokolov began his career with us on board mv Bro Grace as a 2nd Engineer but has since then sailed on board various Thun G-tankers but also had a stint on board mv Silver Freya. The past year he sailed on Thun Britain and now Wisby Wave. A heartfelt thank you for your hard work and commitment to our company. We appreciate it very much.
In memoriam We regret to announce that we have received a message that Captain Jan van Wieringen passed away on 24 November 2023. He was 79 years old. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time. His legacy will live on in the memories of those who had the privilege of working alongside him.

Exploring Collaboration A chat with Andrew Hamill from Nynas AB, partner of Thun Tankers
On November 10, we celebrated the launch of the Thun Resource at the shipyard in Leer, Germany. Ulrika Hamill, godmother of the vessel and wife of Andrew Hamill, who’s the Chartering Manager at Nynas AB, did the naming honors. The Thun Resource is set to be managed by MF Shipping Group and chartered by Nynas for a solid five years. This launch kicks off a series of six sister vessels, known as the ‘R-Class,’ currently in the works by Shipyard Ferus Smit BV, with deliveries planned from 2024 onward. The Thun Resource is not your average ship – it’s got adaptive propulsion to save energy, can plug into shore electricity, packs a UPS battery, sports the latest hull designs, and boasts super-efficient machinery. These vessels are part of Thun Tankers’ plan to upgrade their fleet, making sure they meet the future needs of their clients. We sat down with Andrew to dig deeper into these developments and see how they fit into their broader commitment to being eco-friendly. 1. So, what’s Nynas all about? Nynas, a company with 95 years under its belt, deals with special oils. We have two refineries in Sweden and share another one with Shell in the UK. We produce Bitumen and Naphthenic Oils, used globally. 2. How’s the teamwork with Thun Tankers been for Nynas? Our collaboration started in 2018 with ships like WISBY VERITY, THUN GOLIATH, and THUN GOTHENBURG, moving our Naphthenic Oils and Distillates around North Europe and the Baltic. 3. As someone who’s been with Thun for a while, how’s MF Shipping Group as a ship manager? What makes this partnership great? MF Shipping Group is on top of things. They handle our ships well and tackle issues quickly and efficiently. 4. What’s Nynas’ vision for shipping? Shipping is crucial for us. We’re all about getting better and being efficient, valuing partners who share a similar outlook. 5. Some might see Nynas as an oil company. Sustainability seems important. Whats’ Appening on board
Thun Lidkoping painting In June 2022 at the dry dock in Amsterdam, Chief Officer Vladimir Khalkin of the mt Thun Lidkoping received a Van Gogh painting set of brushes and pencils for his wife Elena. The Chief Officer had the idea of asking his wife to paint a “Staatsieportret” (portrait of the King and Queen). As we all know, you can’t push a good and talented artist. In the end, she produced this fabulous painting and Vladimir managed to get it on board in his suitcase without a scratch or a headache as he passed through customs. In August 2023, he handed over his gift on board to the master of the Thun Lidkoping Cor Verheul. Together with agent Hamilton Shipping, they visited the frame shop in Dublin and the entertainment money was used to buy a suitable frame for the painting. From now on the Royal Family will decorate the mess room. We would like to thank Elena Khalkin for the beautiful painting.

He has proven his skills as Helmsman in all kinds of circumstances and therefore Cadet Samuel Nicolaas Schaap, is now fully certified and qualified to act as Helmsman on board all types of vessels. As from the 2nd of November 2023, Cadet Samuel Nicolaas Schaap is now fully certified and qualified according to the provisions of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Steering Devices for Seafarers, 1979, as amended in October 2001, in the use of all kind of steering devices, automatic or manually operated, on board all types of vessels.
For Captain Peter van Houten, keeping the cadets happy and well trained on board is second nature! And so it was that cadet Sam Schaap received this very promising certificate from Captain Peter! Cadet Mirte Woning was already in possession of this much desired certificate! Both have already proven to be excellent helmsmen!

A farewell from Captain
Frank van der Elsen Dear all, After almost 25 years of sailing with MF Shipping Group, they have given me the opportunity to take a new step and allow me to take my outstanding leave days. For that I am grateful to MF Shipping Group.
For me, the highlights of my time at MFSG were expeditions to Antarctica, sailing to and visiting South America, the Mediterranean, cold winters in the Baltic and Canadian lakes, and sailing the St Lawrence Seaway. I also really enjoyed launching new vessels at Ferus Smit. Travelling and meeting different people and cultures is one of the aspects that made me choose this profession. In my role as Captain on board, I considered the wellbeing of the crew, bringing people together and social welfare to be my main responsibilities, and over the years I have enjoyed and valued the friendship with colleagues on board and in the MF office, Thun Tankers, Valero, Graypen and Hamilton agencies. It happened about two years ago, when I signed on at Cardiff Immigration, that the immigration officer asked me to come forward and said “welcome back Captain Frank and enjoy your stay on board” without showing my passport. On the 13th of September last year I joined the Thun Lidkoping in Dublin for the last time. To show my appreciation, I ordered Lego block chocolates for the crew with the inscription “for sure I could build on you, choco later, Captain Frank”. During my last voyage, I received many heartwarming gifts, beautiful cards with special words from my colleagues on board, other vessels, and agents. I was also invited by agent Graypen to visit the Milford Haven VTS, Graypen office, VPOT and Valero terminal and was treated to a delicious lunch at The Ferry Inn near the waterfront. In Dublin I had a similar experience, I was invited to lunch at the Hamilton office and had the opportunity to visit VTS and sail on the harbour tug Giano, eventually Captain Peter handed over the controls to me for the ultimate challenge of steering the tug.

While on board I also had the opportunity to celebrate my birthday with an excellent homemade cake from our chef. On the day I left Dublin, MF Shipping surprised me with a delicious cake decorated with the words “Thank you Captain Frank”. Overall, I received so many presents and cards that I couldn’t fit them all in my suitcase. So an extra box had to be sent home. Hardly back home, I was invited by Melissa van Leeuwen to join her in IJmuiden to visit and facilitate traineeship for students at the Nova Nautical College. I am looking forward to assisting and guiding the students in their careers, perhaps this will be my next challenge. Before the company day on 21st November, at a dinner attended by both office and fleet colleagues, including Caroline and Kristoffer from Thun Tankers, Karin asked me and my wife Marga to come forward to reflect on the next stage of my life.
Over the years I have had the pleasure of being part of a dynamic and innovative company - MF Shipping Group, Erik Thun AB and Thun Tankers - with a strong focus on core and family values, a booming tanker fleet and an extensive newbuilding program. Especially for junior officers, I see this as positive both for promotion and for working with new technology. In addition, I have had the opportunity to meet and develop long-lasting friendships. Company Day Reflection on the company day in Hoevelaken, the Netherlands
In Hoevelaken, about 50 European sailors and office colleagues gathered for our company day on November 20 and 21. The celebration began with a delightful dinner on November 20, where we not only enjoyed delicious food but also shared warm words in honor of our jubilee, Mark Leering. Who has been with the company for 25 years. Additionally, we bid farewell to Captain Frank van der Elsen, who recently completed his final voyage as a captain and is now, on the way to his well-deserved retirement, taking some leave and assuming some supportive tasks for the office.
The atmosphere was lively, especially during the pub quiz, followed by a vibrant karaoke night where we enthusiastically embraced the tradition from the Philippines. On the 21st, the day started early with an informative session, and about 150 colleagues joint online. The Quality, Crew, and Technical Environmental Department shared their presentations. Despite some technical glitches, particularly disruptive for online participants, we maintained high interaction with enjoyable quizzes and inspiring videos. The theme of the

day was “The Human Aspect and Well-being”, emphasizing more than just vessels. Safety rightly took priority, not only for overall safety at sea but also to create peace of mind that positively influences mental and physical health. Jankees Metzlar, our Chief Quality Officer, shared valuable insights on how we prioritize the human aspect in our operations. Later, the focus shifted to the human element of mooring, with lessons learned during an quiz presented by Jacob Roelevink, Technical Superintendent Supervisor.
The presentation of the Crew Department, with Ole Steinbach succeeding Niels Dijkstra as Chief Operations Officer, was followed by an explanation of the department’s plans and an discussion with Captain Steve Oertel and Sven Tilanus, our Crew Health and Welfare Cpecialist. Last but not least, we welcomed the Technical Department, represented by Jezabel Ramirez (Environmental Specialist) and Jacob Roelevink (Technical Superintendent Supervisor). In a world facing significant challenges, sustainability remains a top priority, as emphasized by an inspiring video from the Maritime Just Transition Task Force. The panel with Captain Dennis van der Zwaard, Ivo Ramakers (Chief Project & Information Officer), and Kristoffer Johansson (Operational Manager at Thun Tankers) led an engaging panel discussion.
In a time when we alternate between online and offline meetings, we faced the challenge of a hybrid gathering. You know those moments when technical glitches don’t quite cooperate. But, despite those digital hiccups, we turned it into a successful gathering together. It once again proves that the power of being together is not limited by physical distance or technical challenges. Welcome on Board Vladimir Kozlov Planned Maintenance Specialist Hello to all, I’m thrilled to introduce myself to the wonderful team here at our company through this magazine. My name is Vladimir Kozlov, and I hail from the beautiful country of Lithuania. With 40 years of dedicated experience in the realm of Electrical Engineering, I’ve had the privilege of exploring a diverse range of fields, including technical and data management, as well as seagoing engineering. Throughout my journey, I’ve had the opportunity to wear many hats from managing different types of vessels and implementing meticulous maintenance systems to diving deep into data with various Business Intelligence tools. As an Electrical Engineer, I’ve navigated the challenges of seafaring and effectively solved complex problems in some of the most demanding environments. I take pride in my pragmatic, fact-driven, and creatively-driven problemsolving mindset, which has not only enriched my professional journey but also allowed me to effectively lead and communicate with both teams and management. I’m truly excited to be a part of this dynamic workplace, and I look forward to collaborating, learning, and contributing to our collective success. Mike Kraan Accounting Assistant My name is Mike Kraan, I am 22 years old, I live in the small village of Holwierde and I joined MF Shipping Group in June 2023. I am currently studying at Hanze University Groningen, where I am in my final year (Bachelor of Business Administration). In February I will start my final internship. I will also do this at MF Shipping Group. I am not unfamiliar with MF Shipping Group. I started here as an intern in the Shipping Administration department in 2019, after which I had the opportunity to do holiday work in several departments. Some of you may have spoken to me on the phone last summer. I worked at the Secretary from June to August. Since the 1st of September I have been working as an Accounting Assistant, which I really enjoy. Outside of work, I like to do sports. For example, I play football for the local football club and can often be found on the padel courts. I also enjoy going out for a drink with friends. I’m happy and proud to have joined MF Shipping Group.
Sergii Shuliak Technical Superintendent I am Sergii Shuliak. Originally from Ukraine, I now live with my family in the small village Bierum, in the north of the province of Groningen. I have a background in maritime engineering, started as an Engineer in 2002 and in 2008 work as Chief Engineer on board the ships operating at North Sea. In the 2012 I was interested in offshore operating vessels, and I move on, for the next 10 years did work as chief engineer on board several types of offshore vessels. But now I decide to go further in my career and join MF Shipping Group as Technical Superintendent. I am happy to be a part of the team and share my knowledge and experience, as the goal is safe and efficient vessel operation.
