Commander’s Message
What a year it has been so far, and the challenges we are facing as a community are far from being over!!! While meeting the demands of the military lifestyle are not foreign to our community, facing a pandemic is certainly new to most of us.

We have so far been doing extremely well, thanks to the resilience of our military families, and the robust support network that has been growing within our community over several decades. As a matter of fact, a key component of our resilient community, the Edmonton Garrison Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) is marking its 30th anniversary this year of outstanding support to military families! Over the last decades, and a direct result of its dedicated and caring team, the MFRC has grown from its roots offering childcare and playschool in a shared building in Griesbach with a staff of fewer than ten, to a flourishing community-driven resource for military families. Having quadrupled its team and expanded its programs to help families with integration, deployments, mental health, transitions, volunteering, children’s development, employment, special needs and so much more, the MFRC is an integral part of our success as a community. On behalf of my family and the entire Garrison community, we are saying a big, heartfelt thank you to the amazing MFRC team!!!
The programs, activities, and services offered by Personnel Support Programs and the Military Family Resource Centre listed in this issue of the Edmonton Garrison Community Guide are here to support you and your family. They have been tailored to meet the requirements of a COVID-19 environment, and as such have been reviewed and adjusted to strictly follow the Alberta Health Services COVID-19 Mitigation Protocols. I encourage you to take a look through the pages to find out what programs are available for all ages, and to sign up. You will find clubs, fitness and recreation activities, personal development and parenting programs, and support for family absences. We have all been isolating, and perhaps become more sedentary over the last few months, our activities present a great opportunity to get active again!
If you are newly arrived to Edmonton, I would like to extend a warm welcome and invite you to participate actively in our programs and activities. This will be an excellent opportunity to meet other members of the community.

How Should I Prepare for my Visit to the Edmonton Garrison Fitness Centre?
If you have already made a reservation, then you are off to a good start. We ask that all patrons intending to use the gym come already dressed for their individual exercise plans. All our water fountains will be inoperable. Please bring your own water. If you intend to use the weight room, please bring a mask. All other areas of the facility do not require a mask but a mask is recommended. Please bring your own personal equipment wherever practical i.e. yoga mats, weight belts etc. Patrons should bring their Military ID card or Membership Card. Patrons without proper identification will be required to pay a drop in fee.
What can I Expect Upon Arrival?
All patrons with a booked workout will be required to wait outside the main entrance upon arrival. Prior to entering the building for your booked workout, a staff member will confirm reservations and take any in-person reservations. A further staff member will provide a short brief on our new facility rules prior to patrons entering the facility. All patrons wishing to make a Front Desk inquiry will join the designated line and will enter the facility as other patron inquiries are completed. • There will be signage clearly indicating the lines for front desk inquiries and facility users. Each line will have physical distancing aids marked on the ground. Please follow the instructions on the signs and the aids on the ground. Our main entrance has been clearly divided into an exit and entrance. If you are waiting to enter the facility, please do not block the exit. • Please note there is a separate line up for those patrons accessing our aquatic facilities. Aquatic patrons will receive an additional brief from a lifeguard once they are in the facility.
What are the Expectations while I am in the Facility?
Physical distancing is expected of all patrons. Regardless of “family”, “cohort”, or “bubble” all patrons are expected to maintain a physical distance of 2 metres. Signage has been placed around the facility to remind patrons of the importance of physical distancing. Directional markings have been placed on the floor to facilitate flow and physical distancing. Our staff will be supervising the various areas of our facility and reminding patrons of the importance of physical distancing. Patrons failing to respect physical distancing guidelines will be asked to leave the facility. Patrons are expected to remain in their reserved area and are not permitted to move between workout areas.
Please do not use any area or piece of equipment marked as closed. All patrons are required to wipe down all equipment and machines before and after use with the disinfectant supplies provided. Masks are recommended in all areas of the facility, but are mandatory in the weight room only. Changerooms are available for washroom use only. All persons in the building MUST adhere to the signage and respect physical distancing regulations set forth by the Government of Alberta.

Recreational Programs When will programs resume?
The majority of Fall programs will resume the week of 21 September, a few programs will resume sooner.
What can I expect in our programs?
Most of our recreational programs have been reduced in size in order to accommodate social distancing. Additional staff have added to programs to facilitate program management and equipment. More time has been allocated inbetween programs for staff to disinfect equipment. Hand sanitizer and personal protective equipment will be used in many program settings.
How have Swim Lessons changed? In order to accommodate physical distancing, all participants in levels Swimmer 3 and under must have a guardian in the water. The guardian will be expected to conduct all the hands-on instruction elements with the participant with the guidance and supervision of the swim instructor. Participants in Swimmer 4 and above will receive normal instruction for the Swim Instructor with a restriction on hands-on contact. Has the price of programs changed? Program fees have been adjusted to account for increased COVID mitigation practices and resources required to meet operational demand.
