Introducción Esta exposición arranca del nivel cero del suelo hacia abajo, en esa dirección excavé para revertir lo que entiendo, excavé dibujos ciegos gobernados por las palmas de mis manos.

Los dedos, las manos y los brazos fueron una herramienta articulada que usé para dibujar una línea con características de túnel. Sin poder ver mi dibujo podía imaginarlo por lo que salía de él, montones de tierra, piedras y basuras enterradas, me explicaban por equivalencia volumétrica el espacio que dibujaba.

Mientras escarbaba con los dedos, perdía de vista el itinerario del túnel, mi brazo no era preciso como mis yemas, era ciego como mis ojos extraviados en la superficie, pero me mostraba los ángulos en que me desviaba y la profundidad máxima a la que podía llegar. Para alargar la línea que mi brazo hacía, debía conectarla a otra. Otro hoyo en otro lugar era hecho por otro brazo que buscaba encontrarse con otras líneas; la red de túneles tejida bajo tierra era desde la superficie un conjunto de orificios, parecidos a los piquetes en las maderas habitadas por termitas.

Demoré con esto, las palabras para nombrar la forma de ahí abajo, retuve la curiosidad por ver lo que me dictaban las manos.

El dibujo estaba enterrado y conocerlo implicaba pasar del dibujo de túneles al molde de vaciado. Inundé con cemento el dibujo hasta ahogarlo, cuando afloró la mezcla al nivel del suelo supe que el dibujo se había borrado.

Las figuras que desenterré ya no las vi como dibujos sino como esculturas, eran esculturas nacidas patas arriba que ahora se aprendían a parar.

La línea del suelo que divide el mundo de la superficie del mundo subterráneo, impuso que los dibujos del submundo pasaran dados vuelta a la superficie y que ahora se presenten en esta exposición como esculturas de dibujos fosilizados.

En una tarde recorrimos el camino que va de la universidad en la que haces clases, a la otra universidad en que estudiaste y en cuyo patio trasero trabajas en esta serie hace más de seis meses junto a tu equipo. El recorrido terminó en tu taller, donde se acumulan piezas de menor formato y muy diversa materialidad. En el triángulo formado por esos tres puntos fuimos desarrollando esta conversación.

La universidad Catalina Valdés ¿Cómo se vincula la experiencia de enseñanza con tu trabajo artístico?

Francisca Sánchez Aprender tiene que ver con la curiosidad, con la intuición y con usar esto como argumento para conocer. Trabajo con estudiantes de primer año. Gran parte del proceso de aprendizaje de este primer momento tiene que ver con desmoldar ideas de sentido común, empujarse a desaprender, hacer preguntas y aprender a responderlas desde las artes visuales.

Es un proceso similar al que ensayo en mi taller: tomar el arte como un lenguaje que me permite relacionarme con el mundo desde la experimentación y la reflexión que se sucede de ella.

CV En esta serie, así como en Idea fija (Galería AFA, 2011), este proceso de (des) aprendizaje forma parte de la exposición y se presenta, tal como dices, como un camino de aprendizaje. ¿Qué queda de la distinción entre proceso y resultado y cómo llegas a definir una obra lista, o, en términos docentes, aprobada?

FS La palabra obra oculta las relaciones de parentesco entre las piezas: las piezas se contaminan entre ellas, obligando a que el sentido particular de cada una se juegue en el montaje, en interacción con el resto. Lo que muestro es el pensamiento movilizado de la mano, no una recolección de resultados.

Hacer y aprender son dos palabras que actúan juntas. Me gusta la idea de Phyllida Barlow que habla de guessworks, es decir, de entender los

trabajos como suposiciones, que no es lo mismo que entenderlos como inacabados o como works in progress.

CV ¿Cómo se integra la historia del arte y la teoría estética en tu trabajo artístico y docente?

FS La historia y la estética me permiten situar mis preguntas en diálogo con las reflexiones sobre la producción artística de otras épocas. Me interesa revisar la relación de la imagen con la representación y también la relación entre las palabras y las cosas. ¿Cómo y cuándo es que una escultura, una pintura, un dibujo o una fotografía se amarran a un significado? Al pensar en posibles respuestas, retomo mi experiencia de trabajo en el taller.

Ahí las reglas son otras a las del sentido común. El taller pervierte el mundo.

Las cabezas de papel hechas como collages, por ejemplo, no habrían existido si hubiera respetado la fotografía como imagen de alguien.

En el taller, la fotografía es un material más, como el cartón o el papel: cortar narices y ojos es parte de la rutina.

El taller es el lugar donde los materiales ningunean lo aprendido. Me interesa el momento en que los pensamientos se validan con los materiales.

La excavación CV ¿Cómo llegas a realizar tus excavaciones aquí?

FS Trabajamos en la Escuela de Artes Visuales de la Universidad de Chile, en la que estudié. Necesitaba un pedazo de terreno para hacer mis experimentos con túneles y Enrique Matthey, director de la Escuela, acogió el proyecto con entusiasmo. Hoy este patio es una faena de construcción, con un container lleno de materiales y herramientas, hoyos por todos lados, montones de tierra, andamios, tecle, piezas enterradas y por desenterrar; es un taller al aire libre que ha sido el centro de producción para esta exposición.

CV ¿Quiénes conforman tu equipo y qué es lo que hacen?

FS Aquí trabajo con Rodrigo Vargas, artista y profesor, con Catalina y Denisse, estudiantes en práctica de la Universidad Diego Portales. Comenzamos a principios de abril, y mensualmente excavamos agujeros en el suelo usando pequeñas palas, cucharas y herramientas hechizas como punzones o tirabuzones.

Con estos instrumentos dibujamos bajo tierra túneles siguiendo el principio de vasos comunicantes para que al verter hormigón en los agujeros, la mezcla fluya conectando los espacios excavados y los túneles den forma a la figura que sacaremos una vez que el cemento haya endurecido.

Esta suerte de dibujo petrificado es confrontada con la imagen que nos habíamos formado a partir de la excavación a mano. Al subir las piezas resultantes sobre la superficie vemos

la réplica invertida del movimiento, son la inversión concreta del hoyo excavado: de túneles, pasan a puentes.

Este método de hacer primero y luego conocer, de entender sin ver, responde a la búsqueda de un procedimiento que burle la lógica de reconocer y nombrar todo lo que veo. Quería exiliar las palabras y enfrentarme a algo que no pudiera definir de antemano, algo de lo que solo conociera los métodos pero no su nombre.

CV Hiciste también excavaciones en la playa. El trabajo al aire libre te pone en contacto con la naturaleza.

En esta serie hay obras que parecen réplicas a escala de formaciones geológicas, fotografías de excavaciones arqueológicas, planos cartográficos. ¿Te acerca esto a las observaciones de las ciencias naturales?

FS La primera vez que mostré las figuras que salieron del vaciado de túneles en la playa, muchas personas me comentaron los vaciados hechos de hormigueros, puntualmente de un video que muestra cómo llenan con cemento un gigantesco hormiguero que al ser desenterrado, deja a la vista una compleja arquitectura semejante a una red urbana.

Las excavaciones que hago tienen el mismo principio, son espacios comunicados que, una vez llenados, dan lugar a una construcción.

Miré imágenes de Capadocia, de los túneles vietnamitas, de las trincheras de la primera guerra mundial y películas de escapes por túneles…

En estos ejemplos, lo que predomina es la justeza de la escala: los espacios escalados a la proporción de sus

habitantes y a la complejidad de su organización, como los hormigueros a las colonias de hormigas.

También me interesé en el trabajo de Federico Assler, por el uso del vaciado en hormigón y su investigación construyendo negativos de la forma, escarbando aislapol. Me enteré que para algunas esculturas utilizó el terreno como contenedor y molde. Una de ellas fue realizada en 1981 en la IV Bienal de Medellín. Las imágenes en su catálogo retrospectivo muestran que en vez de desenterrar la escultura, rebajó el nivel del suelo; el público debía descender al espacio que rodeaba la pieza.

CV También hay paisaje. En tanto imagen bidimensional, se trata de un género eminentemente pictórico hasta mediados del siglo XX. Luego de eso, la expansión de la escultura lo ha abordado, intervenido, representado, replicado de muchas maneras. ¿Cuál es la tuya?

FS Esta investigación se instala en el paisaje entendiéndolo materialmente.

Pienso en el suelo como una superficie que puede ser dibujada en profundidad.

Al dibujar sobre ella con la yema de los dedos mis dedos se hunden, luego entra mi mano que abre camino del antebrazo al codo, hasta topar en el hombro. Este movimiento es el dibujo de mi línea ciega.

La mano puede reconocer tocando las paredes pero no puede dar cuenta del itinerario con una sola palmada.

Es por partes y sucesivamente que los “ojos” de los dedos suman información y reconocen la forma de su paseo.

CV ¿Consideras los hoyos de la excavación como parte de la serie? ¿Te interesas por el land art?

FS Por ahora los hoyos son un dibujo que se destruye, pero que es necesario para nivelar la supremacía del sentido de la vista con el sentido del tacto.

Hay un video de Nancy Holt y Robert Smithson, Swamp, en el que vemos un plano cerrado de un pastizal alto y denso que no deja ver nada más que las varillas chocando contra una cámara que va abriéndose paso entre ellas. Al ritmo de la imagen, escuchamos la voz agitada de Holt y lejos se escucha la voz de Smithson dando instrucciones que guían su avance.

Cualquiera de nosotros que pisa un pantano, camina luego evitando el pantano. El experimento de Swamp elimina la prevención, restringe la mirada a lo inmediato y los movimientos a un dictado. Esta supresión de información hace posible que el cuerpo de Holt se someta al pantano, se nivele con él.

De la misma manera, escarbar sin ver expone mi mano al choque con la tierra y las piedras, desviando el plan de dibujo a una permanente negociación entre mi voluntad y la densidad ofrecida por el material.

CV Pensando en la voz “dictadora” de Swamp, ¿cómo son las instrucciones verbales en tu trabajo? Por un lado está la necesidad de comunicar tus ideas al resto del equipo y por otro, se dan como la traducción del gesto a la palabra y de esta a la forma.

FS Las instrucciones que doy son pasos de una coreografía. Al trasladar el movimiento de los brazos a palabras,

pretendo conducir la dirección con que se hace el túnel. El dibujo parte con las instrucciones para los dedos, que son la parte lúcida del brazo; la muñeca, el codo y el hombro son articulaciones obedientes al encabezado dictado con la mano. Hay un inventario de direcciones posibles: paralelo al suelo, descender en línea recta o en diagonal, avanzar en curva hacia abajo, hacia el lado, etcétera. La combinatoria de estas variantes es lo que configura el resultado.

Estudié y ensayé previamente las instrucciones en pequeña escala.

Sobre bloques de esponja floral escarbé túneles con los dedos, luego al vaciarlos podía evaluar su forma reconociendo las direcciones que tomaron los dedos al interior del bloque. Esto me dio un inventario de movimientos que sirvió de referencia para las instrucciones que necesitaría dar después.

En los experimentos que hicimos en la playa, en cambio, las instrucciones fueron más abiertas. Pedí a los participantes que se ubicaran frente a frente y que juntaran sus manos bajo la arena. Con cuatro o más brazos tratando de encontrarse, la parte dogmática de las instrucciones es saboteada por los acuerdos subterráneos de los excavadores.

El taller CV Y los experimentos con la bidimensionalidad, esto es, con fotografía y dibujo, ¿funcionan también como traducciones? En tu taller hay varias imágenes que parecen tener una existencia independiente de las piezas excavadas. Pero tengo la sensación que el proceso de traducción queda siempre inacabado. ¿Este descalce es un aspecto que te interesa exhibir?

FS El uso de la fotografía y el dibujo me han permitido preguntarle a las cosas qué forma tienen y cómo están hechas.

La primera definición que usé de escultura fue: una suma de dibujos.

Bajo esta hipótesis de trabajo usé fotografías como medio para describir cosas y rehacerlas. La impresión de estas imágenes sobre el papel me ayudaba a reconocer una manera de hacer y a la vez a leer el borde de las cosas en lo fotografiado; al pasar esto a lenguaje tridimensional, la forma literal se desfiguraba dando origen a otra cosa.

Paulatinamente, la subordinación de los materiales a las imágenes dejó de funcionar. La hipótesis de la suma de las vistas de un objeto para recomponerlo no funciona con el paisaje ¿Cuántas vistas necesito para recomponer un paisaje? ¿Cómo se rodea un paisaje? Para abordarlo necesitaríamos una fotografía gorda, capas fotográficas que avancen en profundidad para dar cuenta de dicho espesor.

Esto está en relación con los túneles rellenos de la serie; imaginemos que la mezcla que echamos es un lector líquido que registra por contacto los detalles de este paisaje subterráneo que al mismo tiempo que se propaga en él, lo borra.

CV La tecnología 3D es, precisamente, una simulación de tridimensionalidad que luego, al imprimirse, se hace real. ¿Qué lugar ocupa en este trabajo?

FS Retoma el asunto de la suma de vistas para generar un volumen, pero esta vez con la ayuda de un software de fotogrametría. La fotogrametría es una técnica que permite generar un modelo virtual 3D utilizando capturas fotográficas; el software reconoce la posición de la cámara y según esto, ubica las imágenes para reconstruir lo fotografiado.

Lo que me interesa en este caso es contrastar las formas realizadas a partir de imágenes fotográficas con aquellas generadas por vaciados. Hice entonces una excavación en el patio. Luego la fotografié desde diferentes posiciones y ángulos. Con las fotografías, el software hizo un modelo tridimensional de la excavación que después imprimí como objeto a pequeña escala.

La misma excavación fotografiada fue vaciada en yeso. Lo que vemos en la exposición es la forma de yeso y el modelo impreso en 3D. En teoría debiera existir un calce entre ambos, el modelo 3D debiera corresponder al yeso como su molde, y viceversa, la pieza de yeso corresponder al modelo 3D como su vaciado.

La exposición rebota entre estos dos polos, entre el tacto ciego que produce formas que se deben a lo que saca, y la hipervisibilidad fotográfica que genera objetos modelados con fotografías.

Poner sacando

Hay que ver una mano escarbando la tierra. Ver cómo esta mano trabaja sobre la superficie hasta lograr erosionarla y a paso lento ir hundiéndose en ella. Si uno logra seguir este movimiento de inmersión va a notar que va acompasado por el movimiento de pala que a tiempos regulares retira el material desprendido.

La resistencia ofrecida a la penetración va variando: una piedra debe ser rodeada para finalmente desprenderla, un grupo de pequeñas piedritas –como región de asteriodes– hace que la mano avance más lento dejando tras de sí una galería estrecha que se ensancha nuevamente cuando el fondo vuelve a ser blando.

Ahora hay que imaginar que la acción anterior es filmada como aquellos documentales en los que se muestra un corte transversal en el terreno para permitir observar el hábitat de topos u hormigas con todos sus túneles subterráneos. Vamos a ver esta grabación en reversa: la mano retrocede por una galería y la va llenando lentamente con la sustancia grumosa que deja tras de sí. De repente y de manera inexplicable deja una piedra como si hubiese puesto un huevo. Así, poco a poco, va rellenando el espacio, dejando sepultada una serpiente de tierra perfectamente mimetizada con su molde contenedor.

Estas imágenes, guiadas todavía por la vista y su archivo de experiencias, encuentran su doble en el árbol que en invierno exhibe sus ramas desnudas. Si nos detenemos y recordamos que sus raíces clavadas en la tierra se reflejan como en espejo en las ramas de la copa, podemos por un segundo percibir el modo ansioso y tenaz con que las ramas se imbrican en la materia menos densa del aire. Entonces el aire toma cuerpo, se hace contraforma.

Un molde móvil

Las herramientas que permiten modificar el mundo dejan su huella marcada al modelarlo. A veces se trata de la huella digital o de las formas tubulares y articuladas de los dedos: después de todo la mano es una herramienta magnífica que ha buscado extenderse, diversificarse, multiplicarse y fortalecerse fabricando a su vez herramientas. Esto se puede confirmar en los viejos talleres de los escultores repletos de gubias, estecas, martillos, cinceles, sierras, etcétera. A este inventario bellasartiano habría que agregar hoy las infinitas novedades tecnológicas, del Dremel a la impresora 3D.

Por su lado, los pintores cuentan con pinceles y espátulas.

Los primeros son moldes versátiles: hay veces en que son capaces de borrar las marcas dejadas a su paso. A las espátulas les cuesta mucho más dejar de ser ellas mismas. Inevitablemente dejan inscrita su huella de acero. Dicen que el pintor francés del siglo XVIII Jean Baptiste Simenon Chardin escondía en su taller múltiples y extraños utensilios con los que conseguía pintar la variedad y riqueza de materialidades por las que se pueden reconocer sus trabajos.

Si bien la mano es tremendamente versátil para modelar formas, una cosa está clara: la recta no es lo suyo. Si la mano se pierde de vista y su trabajo es subterráneo, menos se puede controlar su actuar. Esto no cambia demasiado si la ayudamos con un guante o una pequeña pala. Es por todo esto que si la matriz de las formas es la mano y el brazo, es probable que como resultado salgan figuras con extremidades, brazos hechos con brazos.

Hoyos Encontrarse en la calle con una excavación tiene algo de sorprendente que hace girar la cabeza al peatón como lo haría a la vista de un accidente de tránsito. Puede que esto suceda porque ambos hechos comparten el signo de la discontinuidad.

El agujero hace que percibamos el sinfín de calles, casas, edificios y árboles que dominan la vista como una fina capa de decorado adherida débilmente a la consistente materia de la tierra.

Un agujero en el piso permite sentir por momentos la infinita profundidad bajo nuestros pies. Es algo que a veces sucede en la borda de un barco: aparece de golpe la imagen casi angustiosa de los volúmenes de agua bajo los pies junto a la maravilla y el misterio de la vida submarina.

En una mala película hecha a partir del Viaje al centro de la tierra de Verne aparece un vehículo que gracias a un rayo láser en su punta puede navegar al interior del planeta.

Esta imagen fantástica recuerda que así como navegamos en el mar y volamos por el aire, se podría en principio navegar bajo la tierra. “Solo” se trata de un problema de densidad de la materia.

El que escarva es poseído generalmente por dos tipos de pasiones: buscar la profundidad y conectarse. La primera tiene que ver con un afán de aventura y de descubrimiento.

Este tipo de emoción hace que la mano se transforme en un pequeño cuerpo cuya mirada pone la imaginación. La segunda está vinculada a la maravilla del encuentro y la coincidencia.

Una mano que se encuentra con otra bajo la arena produce sorpresa aunque sea totalmente previsto. Es lo mismo que sucede cuando repentinamente se tocan los dos extremos de un tunel en excavación. Esta alegría es la del reencuentro y del triunfo de la lógica.

Pensar con la mano

Un recurso de la construcción consiste en hacer agujeros verticales ahí donde se requiere levantar vigas subterráneas. Se excava en el lugar correcto, luego se introduce una estructura de acero para finalmente verter el hormigón y rellenar el espacio vacío.

Mediante este procedimiento la masa de concreto armado queda a la espera de la losa a soportar. Esta manera programada y predefinida de excavar evidentemente no se parece mucho a la excavación libre de los niños en la arena. Ellos escarban y su plan es siempre provisorio; cambia de acuerdo a la imaginación y sus fantasías en busca del tesoro. En el caso de las vigas, si los obreros llegan a encontrar un vestigio enterrado, este es por lo general un estorbo. Lo importante es seguir la obra.

En ambos casos no se puede abandonar el principio visual que nutre la imaginación del avance subterráneo. El resultado es en el primer caso anticipado por el proyecto inscrito en el plano; solo hay que hacerlo calzar con la realidad. En el segundo hay una deriva en que el tacto estimula la imaginación visual.

Sin embargo ambos sentidos no se superponen naturalmente en un solo punto. Más bien alimentan desde sus memorias el pensamiento heterogéneo en el que parece dominar el sentido de la vista. Lo que se imaginó visualmente desde el tacto no calza con la realidad visual del resultado.

A diferencia de los videntes, el ciego piensa tomando como fuente de experiencia el sentido del tacto. No puede sino imaginar lo visual desde lo táctil. Así define el ojo el ciego de Diderot: “Es un órgano sobre el cual el aire produce el efecto de mi bastón sobre mi mano –y continúa–. Tan cierto es que cuando coloco mi mano entre sus ojos y un objeto, mi mano está presente ante ustedes, pero el objeto está ausente. Lo mismo sucede cuando busco una cosa con mi bastón pero me encuentro con otra”.

Otra definición elocuente es la que hace del espejo: “Una máquina, me respondió, que pone las cosas en relieve lejos de ellas mismas, si éstas se hallan ubicadas convenientemente en relación a ella.

Es como mi mano, solo que no hace falta que la apoye al lado de un objeto para sentirlo”.

Los desfaces y encuentros entre la recepción de los sentidos y nuestro cerebro se pueden analizar experimentalmente en el “Cubo de Necker” 1. Este es el nombre de una ilusión óptica creada por su homónimo en el año 1832. En esta se posa la vista sobre la axonométrica de un cubo realizada linealmente.

Al mirarlo se puede comprobar que el cerebro permite percibir la imagen en dos sentidos alternativamente pero nunca de manera simultánea, señalando así que la percepción visual puede escoger diferentes interpretaciones de un mismo fenómeno.

Este experimento se vuelve aún más sorprendente cuando el cubo lineal está hecho de alambre y es tridimensional. Si se cuelga de uno de sus vértices y se logra percibir invertido, parece seguir al espectador mientras se desplaza. Ahora, si es tomado del vértice inferior y se le hace girar ocurre lo más imprevisto: gira hacia el lado opuesto del esperado y los dedos sienten cómo el alambre se transforma en una materia elástica. Lo que sucede aquí es que el cerebro modifica la percepción táctil para justificar lo visualmente percibido manteniendo así la coherencia aprendida.

Del experimento descrito se puede deducir que la percepción no es algo a priori, sino que se desarrolla por medio de la experiencia. Si un ciego recupera la vista no podrá conectar su conocimiento táctil de la esfera con su imagen. Esto no significa que no pueda establecer la conexión. Podrá hacerlo luego de un aprendizaje.

Tomando en cuenta estos datos como antecedente cabe pensar que las artes visuales (¡qué énfasis óptico!) se desarrollan en la medida en que aumentan nuestros registros de experiencia y pensamiento. Los volúmenes positivizados de túneles que vemos aquí podrían entenderse como experimentos de percepción y pensamiento que van dejando registro de sus diferencias y dificultades. Solo falta un nuevo lenguaje o nuevas articulaciones del mismo para interpretar los indicios.

Ojo por ojo, diente por diente… repito esta sentencia una y otra vez.

Me ofrecí para ayudar a Francisca en su trabajo diario.

Extraigo con un vaso de metal una onza de tierra que deposito en un montón que a ella le gusta recordar es de igual magnitud al hoyo que ayudo a formar.

Francisca se entretiene jugando a que la excavación que hacemos es un túnel en la penitenciaria. Yo imagino un preso condenado a un presidio que durará el mismo tiempo que le lleva terminar un túnel para escapar.

Recito otras combinaciones posibles de la ley mosaica pensando en la retribución que exigiré por el trabajo incómodo que hago; minuto por minuto, mancha por mancha, piedras por piedras, tierra por tierra. Continúo así, sabiendo que La ley del Talión es la única norma de equivalencia que Francisca Sánchez admitirá inmediatamente. Su arte es, creo, precisamente un intento de encontrar esta proporcionalidad perdida y restablecer la ley de “tale”, la de retribución por lo idéntico o semejante.

Esto es lo que le he visto hacer muchas veces, tomar una cosa en su versión reducida y devolverla a su proporción semejante.

Hacer de una foto de un rostro, una cabeza. De fotocopias sacadas a un libro con fotografías de ríos, extraer un caudal de papel. Tratar una camisa de cartón como un personaje sentado.

Unir unas cáscaras planas para reencontrar un objeto extraviado.

Rellenar de material la silueta de una nariz hasta que la cosa ocupe el lugar que le es debido, para que se presente de una manera justa, diría ella. Esto es lo que Francisca busca: una justicia. Una justicia de las cosas y de los materiales, un código de Hammurabi del cemento, el yeso y el papel.

¿Qué son entonces las formas de cemento que Sánchez extrae del suelo? Son, sobre todo, cosas justas, son instrumentos de justicia donde el bulto es la retribución en justicia de un hoyo, que es la retribución justa de un brazo excavando, que es la retribución de un dedo rasguñando.

La primera vez que Francisca mencionó su plan de hacer un molde bajo el suelo fue luego de ver la película Andréi Rublev de Tarkovski. En una escena del filme se muestra el largo proceso involucrado en la realización de una campana. Se ve un grupo de rusos comandados por un niño de unos trece años haciendo un hoyo enorme en la tierra para fundir la campana.

La verdad es que no se entiende bien el sistema utilizado en el siglo XV para fundir esta pieza de varios metros de diámetro.

Casi nunca vemos la totalidad de la pieza. La campana, que no suena mientras está enterrada, solidariamente es también prácticamente invisible. Las imágenes describen en vez del objeto; andamios, barro, paja, fuego, los gritos y la incredulidad de los trabajadores respecto al éxito de la hazaña.

Francisca quedó prendida de la incertidumbre representada en esa escena y mantuvo la pregunta “cómo diablo lo hacen”.

Esta aventura tambaleante termina finalmente en un objeto enormemente sólido: una campana de varias toneladas.

La ceguera produce algo firme y pesado, razonamiento que le sonó a Francisca como un programa de trabajo, reconoció además en los ojos cerrados del niño jefe de obra un rasgo fundamental de lo justo. No en vano la justicia es representada como una dama con los ojos vendados, siendo la ceguera un atributo que garantiza la ecuanimidad de su actuar.

El rey Salomón cerró los ojos y se sirvió de una espada cuando sus ojos y oídos podían equivocarlo. Sometió a un bebé entre sus manos a la amenaza del acero. Presentó el infante como una cosa y así pudo saber en justicia la naturaleza y origen del pequeño.

Creemos conocer por nuestros sentidos y solo podemos desconfiar de ellos. Por separado no son suficiente y mancomunados engañan. Solo nos queda dudar metódicamente encegueciendo por turno nuestros entendimientos.

Recuerdo una película traducida en castellano como No me chilles, que no te veo. El argumento propone un crimen del que los únicos testigos son un ciego representado por Richard Pryor y un sordo interpretado por Gene Wilder. Cada personaje conoce una información irrelevante por sí sola y reveladora si se une; como en una versión cómica del problema de Molyneux, 1 no logran aunar sus experiencias.

Entonces la curiosidad no basta para entender. ¿Cómo comprobar la realidad de las ideas que nos hacemos del mundo?

Como hizo Salomón, hay que convertirlas en cosas y luego someterlas a pruebas de acero; hundirlas bajo tierra, endurecerlas, masificarlas, darlas vuelta para luego poder verlas genuinamente por primera vez.

Este verano Francisca hizo un hoyo en la arena de una playa y lo llenó con yeso para ver qué forma podría hacer su ceguera.

Luego pensó en un túnel que uniera dos hoyos en la arena.

Ciegamente escarbó, llenó y extrajo una forma.

Francisca miraba el bulto complacida de la distancia entre la predicción que había hecho en su mente y el resultado que veían sus ojos. Bautizó las esculturas con nombres de cosas parecidas a estas formas imprevistas; La Portada de Antofagasta, la araña o el paraíto. Planeó nuevas formas para excavar en el suelo y en cada pieza, la distancia entre el vaticinio y la cosa resultante se corría pero se mantenía; a veces el material traicionaba el plan ideado, a veces la forma, otras la resistencia del suelo a ser excavado. El hecho es que emergían nuevas formas justas, hijas regulares de la ecuación entre un plan, su realización ciega y un material que endurece el todo.

Francisca finalmente se instaló en el patio trasero de Las Encinas 3370 (Facultad de Arte de la Universidad de Chile) para comandar una cuadrilla que parece que caminara sobre un campo minado. Esquivando hoyos y marcas en el suelo, siguen un plan que es tan preciso como invisible. Las indicaciones parecen militares; hoy deben juntar cuatro hoyos en el medio, bajo tierra; el batallón sin embargo está encomendado a la sorpresa y la ceguera.

Ya han desenterrado diez formas y en el subsuelo yacen otras cinco. Las piezas de cemento demoran semanas para endurecer debidamente, luego son extraídas y ordenadas en fila. Al ver las figuras dispuestas, como Francisca lo hace, limpias y al revés de como fueron sacadas del suelo, cuesta adivinar el procedimiento usado para moldearlas.

No podemos a primera vista saber la cadena metodológica que describo en este texto. Son entonces las propias esculturas las que proponen formas que reconocemos como exactas, pertinentes y justas. Estas piezas que no pueden ser reseñadas por teléfono (alguien diría: son arcos con muchos pies o cachos torcidos, y no daría con la silueta), no refieren a nada común, en este sentido son cosas completamente extrañas y sin embargo no hay nada caprichoso en ellas; son cosas lógicas, directas y didácticas.

Los bultos de cemento explicaron y vuelven a explicar algo, son letras remanentes de lo que Paul Valéry llamó una educación profunda; cito: “La educación profunda consiste en deshacer y rehacer la educación primera”. Día a día, forma con forma, Francisca Sánchez traza las nuevas lecciones de su reeducación.

Taller de escultura en moldes de arena

El taller propuso trabajar en la playa y usar la arena como molde.

En grupos, duplas o en solitario, los participantes excavaron túneles diseñando bajo la superficie espacios comunicados.

Espolvoreando yeso sobre agua salada, preparamos la mezcla que luego vertimos dentro de la excavación, convirtiendo los túneles en moldes. Llenamos estos moldes hasta que el yeso afloró e igualó su nivel con el nivel del mar.

Fraguada la mezcla y con la ayuda de palas, comenzamos la excavación destruyendo los moldes para desenterrar las figuras.

Una vez con ellas sobre la superficie, las acercamos al mar y las lavamos, con esto aparecieron las marcas de los dedos que rastrillaron los túneles que las modelaron.

Francisca Sánchez nació en Santiago en 1975. Licenciada en Antropología y Magíster en Artes Visuales de la Universidad de Chile. En el 2004 participa en la residencia De Ateliers en Amsterdam y dos años después se integra al programa de investigación artística La Seine de l’École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris.

Durante el tiempo que vive en el extranjero es becada por las entidades en las que participa, lo que le permite dedicarse exclusivamente a la experimentación y al trabajo sistemático en el taller.

Esto marcará su quehacer artístico proponiendo la práctica de la escultura como una metodología para entender las cosas del mundo rehaciéndolas.

El 2009, de regreso en Chile, funda junto a María Berríos e Ignacio Gumucio el colectivo y editorial vaticanochico, que postula la curiosidad como motor del conocimiento y del autoaprendizaje. Actualmente vive y trabaja en Santiago, compartiendo su tiempo entre sus investigaciones y la enseñanza en la Escuela de Arte de la Universidad Diego Portales.

Catalina Valdés es historiadora del arte y se desempeña actualmente como académica del Departamento de Arte de la Universidad Alberto Hurtado.

Su campo de intereses está dado por las relaciones entre arte, naturaleza y ciencia.

Se especializa en el arte latinoamericano del siglo XIX, dentro del cual desarrolla su tesis doctoral sobre las imágenes de la cordillera de los Andes entre Chile y Argentina en aquel periodo.

Pablo Ferrer es artista visual y se desempeña actualmente como académico del departamento de Artes Visuales de la Facultad de Artes de la Universidad de Chile y en la Escuela de Arte de la Universidad Diego Portales.

Ha exhibido individual y colectivamente en Chile y en el extranjero. Dentro de Chile ha expuesto en Matucana 100, Galería Animal, Galería Gabriela Mistral, Muro Sur, D21, Sala Sam, en la primera “Trienal de Chile” en el MAC, entre otros.

En el extranjero ha participado en diversas ferias de arte y en muestras colectivas en Ciudad de México, Atenas, Bruselas, Lima, Buenos Aires, Bogotá, Madrid y Berlín.

Ignacio Gumucio es artista visual y actualmente se desempeña como académico en la Escuela de Arte de la Universidad Diego Portales y en la Escuela de Arte de la Universidad Andrés Bello.

Ha exhibido individual y colectivamente en Chile y en el extranjero. En Chile ha expuesto en Galería AFA, Sala Gasco, MAC, Galería Gabriela Mistral, Galería Animal, Museo Salvador Allende, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, entre otros. En el extranjero ha exhibido en Jack S. Blaton Museum, Espace Louis Vuitton, American Society, National museum of contemporary art de Corea y en la Octava Bienal de Cuenca.

Introduction This exhibition begins at ground level and moves downward from there; it was in that direction that I excavated to revert what I understood, as I excavated blind drawings governed by the palms of my hands. My fingers, hands and arms were an articulated tool that I used to draw a line with the qualities of a tunnel. Unable to see my drawing, I could imagine it from what came out: tons of earth, stones, and buried garbage, which explained the space that I was drawing through volumetric equivalence.

As I dug with my fingers, I lost sight of the itinerary of the tunnel.

My arm was not as precise as the tips of my fingers; it was as blind as my eyes, lost on the surface, but it showed me the angles at which I deviated and the maximum depth I could achieve. To elongate the line formed by my arm, I had to connect it to another arm.

Another hole in another place was made by another arm that sought to find other lines. The network of tunnels woven underground was, from the surface, a collection of holes, something like the

pocked surface of wood where termites have been nesting.

I decided to take my time finding the words to name the forms down below. I held fast to my curiosity to see what my hands had dictated. The drawing was buried and knowing it implied shifting from the drawing of the tunnels to the hollow cast.

I flooded the drawing with cement, choking it, and when the mixture bubbled up to the surface, I knew that the drawing had been erased.

The figures I removed from the ground were no longer drawings to me, but sculptures, sculptures born upside down and that were now learning how to stand up.

The line on the ground that separates the surface world from the underground world determined that the drawings of the underworld would return to the surface upended, and they are now displayed in this exhibition as sculptures of fossilized drawings.

One afternoon, we walked along a path that took us from the university where you teach to the university where you studied, the same university whose back patio is where you have been working with your crew for the past six months on this series. Our walk then took us to your studio, which houses a trove of smaller-format pieces in a variety of materials.

It was in the triangle formed by these three points that we had the following conversation.

The University

Catalina Valdés What is the connection between your teaching experience and your artistic practice?

Francisca Sánchez Learning has to do with curiosity, with intuition and with using this as an argument for knowing. I work with first-year students, and a big part of the learning process

of this first moment at the university has to do with taking common sense ideas out of their mold. It’s about pushing yourself to unlearn certain things, to ask questions and to learn to answer them through the visual arts. This process is very similar to what I practice in my studio: I approach art as a language that allows me to relate to the world through experimentation and the reflections that emerge from that experimentation.

CV In this series, as in Idea Fija (Galería AFA, 2011), this process of (un)learning forms part of the exhibition and is presented, as you say, as a learning process.

What remains of the distinction between process and result?

How do you come to define a work as finished or, in academic terms, ‘approved?’

FS The word “work” hides the familial relationships between

pieces; the pieces infect one another, so that the specific meaning of each individual work comes into play when the exhibition is assembled, in the interaction with the others.

What I show is thought mobilized by my hand, not a compendium of results.

Doing and learning are two words that act together. I like Phyllida Barlow’s idea of “guesswork,” of understanding works of art as suppositions, which is different from understanding them as unfinished or as works in progress.

CV How are art history and aesthetic theory integrated into your artistic and teaching practices?

FS History and aesthetics allow me to situate my questions in a dialogue with reflections upon the artistic production of other eras. I am interested in revisiting the relationship between image and representation, as well as the relationship between words and things.

How and why is it that a sculpture, a painting, a drawing or a photograph may become attached to a given meaning?

When I think of possible answers, I go back to my experience working in my studio. There, the rules are not those of common sense. The studio perverts the world. My paper heads made as collages, for example, would not have existed had I respected the photograph as an image of someone. In my workshop, photographs are just another material, like cardboard or paper; cutting eyes and noses is part of the routine. My studio is the place where materials dismiss the things I have learned.

I am interested in the moment when thoughts are validated as materials.

The Excavation

CV How did you arrive at this specific place to carry out your excavations?

FS We were working at the Visual Arts School of the Universidad de Chile, where I studied.

I needed a piece of land where I could do my experiments with tunnels and Enrique Mathey, the school’s director, was very enthusiastic about me doing the project there. So now this back patio is a construction site with a container filled with materials and tools, holes all over the place, little mounds of earth, scaffolds, hoists, pieces buried and soon to be removed from underground.

It’s an open-air studio that has been the main production site for this exhibition.

CV Tell me about the members of your team and what they do.

FS I work here with Rodrigo Vargas, an artist and professor, and with Catalina and Denisse, who are student interns from Universidad Diego Portales. We began working in early April of this year, and every month we excavate holes in the ground using small shovels, spoons and makeshift tools like burins and corkscrews. With these instruments we draw tunnels under the earth, following the principle of communicating vessels so that when we pour concrete into the holes, the mix flows and connects the excavated spaces, and the tunnels give way to figures that we will then remove once the cement has hardened.

This kind of petrified drawing must confront the image we saw in our minds as we excavated with our hands. When we pull the finished pieces out to the surface, we see the inverted replica of our movements. They are the concrete inversion of

the excavated hole: the tunnel becomes a bridge.

This method of doing first and knowing second, of understanding without seeing, responds to my search for a procedure that could upend the logic of recognizing and naming everything we see. I wanted to exile words and deal with something I couldn’t define beforehand, something about which I could only know the methods, not the name.

CV You also performed excavations at the beach. Working outside puts you in touch with nature. In this series there are pieces that seem like scale replicas of geological formations, photographs of archeological excavations, or cartographic blueprints. Does this bring you closer to the kind of observations that are done in the natural sciences?

FS The first time I showed people some of the figures that came from casting tunnels at the beach, a number of people said that they reminded them of those casts you sometimes see of ant farms, specifically of these videos that show how cement is poured into a massive anthill when it is disinterred, exposing a complex architectural structure similar to an urban grid. The excavations I perform operate according to the same principle.

They are communicated spaces that, once filled, give shape to a construction.

I looked at images of Cappadocia, of the underground tunnels in Vietnam, of the trenches from World War I and movies about people escaping through tunnels...In these examples what predominates is the precision of scale: the spaces are scaled in proportion to their inhabitants and the complexity

of their organization, like the anthills in ant colonies.

I also became interested in the work of Federico Assler, particularly in his use of cement casting and his investigation into building negative forms by digging into Styrofoam. I learned that for some sculptures he used land as a container and mold.

An example of this was done in 1981 for the 4th Medellin Biennial.

The images in his retrospective catalogue show that instead of removing the sculpture from the earth, he lowered the level of the surface. The viewers had to descend into the space that surrounded the piece.

CV Then there is landscape. As a two-dimensional image, this was an eminently pictorial genre until the mid twentieth century. After that, the expansion of sculpture has approached, intervened, represented, and replicated it in many different ways. Which is your way of working with landscape?

FS This investigation inserts itself into the landscape through a material understanding of it.

I think of the ground as a surface that may be drawn in depth.

When I draw on the ground with my fingertip, my fingers sink and then my hand enters, creating a pathway for my forearm and then my elbow and then all the way to my shoulder. This movement is the blind drawing of the line.

The hand can recognize by touching the walls but it cannot understand the itinerary in a single handful. It is a step-bystep process. Successively the “eyes” of the fingers accumulate information and recognize the shape of their path.

CV Do you consider the holes of the excavation to be part of the series? Are you interested in Land Art? FS Right now the holes are a drawing that will be destroyed, but this destruction is necessary to create a balance between the supremacy of the sense of sight and the sense of touch.

There is a video by Nancy Holt and Robert Smithson called Swamp, in which we see a closed shot of a meadow with tall, dense

grass, through which the viewer cannot see anything but the rods banging against the camera that passes through them.

As the camera rolls, we can hear Holt’s agitated voice and, from farther away, Smithson’s voice giving instructions to guide her movements.

Anyone who steps into a swamp walks around trying to evade the swamp. The experiment of the film Swamp eliminates prevention and restricts the gaze to what is immediately in front of the eyes and restricts movements to a dictate. This suppression of information allows Holt’s body to surrender to the swamp, to become level with it.

In the same way, digging without seeing exposes my hand to the clash with earth and rocks, diverting the drawing plan to a permanent negotiation between individual will and the density offered up by the material.

CV Thinking about the “dictatorial” voice of Swamp, could you speak a bit about the verbal instructions you give in your work? On the one hand you have the need to communicate your ideas to the rest of the group, and on the other hand they are given in a kind of translation from the gesture to the word and from the word to the shape.

FS The instructions I give are choreographic steps. When I shift the movement of the arms to words, I am trying to guide the direction in which the tunnel should be made. The drawing begins with the instructions for the fingers, which are the lucid part of the arm; the wrist, elbow and shoulders are joints that obey the guidelines dictated by the hand. I have an inventory of possible directions: parallel to the ground; descend in a straight line or on a diagonal; advance by

curving downward or to the side, et cetera. The combination of these variants is what configures the result.

Previous to this work, I studied and practiced these instructions on a small scale.

Working on blocks of floral foam I dug holes with my fingers, and when I emptied them I could assess their shape by recognizing the directions in which my fingers went inside the sponge block. This gave me an inventory of movements that served as references for the instructions I would have to give later on.

In the experiments we carried out on the beach, on the other hand, the instructions were more open. I asked the participants to position themselves face to face and to join hands under the sand.

With four or more arms trying to find one another, the dogmatic part of the instructions was sabotaged by the underground agreements of the excavators.

The studio

CV Do your experiments with bidimensionality —with photography and drawing—also work as translations? In your studio there are several images that seem to have an existence independent of the excavated pieces. But I get the feeling that

the process of translation is always unfinished. Is this failure to fit an aspect that you are interested in exhibiting?

FS The use of photography and drawing has allowed me to ask things about their shape and how they are made.

The first definition I used for sculpture was: a sum of drawings. With this working hypothesis I used photographs as a medium for describing things and remaking them. By printing these images on paper I was able to recognize a way of doing and also read the edge of things in what was photographed.

By transferring this to a threedimensional language, the literal form became disfigured, giving rise to something new.

Little by little, the subordination of materials to images stopped working.

The hypothesis of recomposing an object by adding different views of it does not work with landscape. How many views do I need to recompose a landscape?

How is a landscape surrounded?

To tackle this we would need a thick photograph, photographic layers that move forward in depth to reflect such thickness.

This mix or liquid reader erases the underground landscape as it moves through it.

CV 3D technology is, precisely, a simulation of tridimensionality that becomes real upon printing.

What place does it have in this work?

FS It goes back to the sum of views to generate a volume, but this time with the help of a photogrammetric software.

Photogrammetry is a technique that allows you to generate a virtual 3D model of something by using photographic captures.

The software recognizes the position of the camera and based on that locates images to reconstruct what has been photographed.

In this case what interests me is the contrast between the forms achieved by the photographic images and those generated by casting. So I did an excavation in the patio. Then I photographed it from different positions and angles. With the photographs the software made a threedimensional model of the excavation, and I later printed it as a small-scale object.

The same excavation that I photographed was cast in plaster.

What we see in the exhibition is the plaster form and the printed 3D model. In theory the two results should jibe: the 3D model ought to correspond to the plaster as its mold, and vice versa: the plaster piece should correspond to the 3D model as its cast.

The exhibition ricochets between these two poles, between the blind touch that produces forms that owe their existence to what was removed, and the photographic hypervisibility that generates objects modeled with photographs.

Putting in by taking out

You have to see the hand digging in the ground. You have to see how this hand works upon the surface until it erodes that surface and, bit by bit, becomes buried beneath it. If you are able to follow this movement of immersion you will notice that it is accompanied by the movement of a shovel that, in regular rhythms, removes the material that has been detached.

The resistance presented to the penetration varies: a rock must be rolled over in order to be removed; a group of tiny stones, like a cluster of asteroids, slows down the progress of the hand,

which leaves in its trail a slender gallery that broadens once again when the bottom of the hole softens.

Now you have to imagine that the previous action is being filmed, like those documentaries that show a transversal slice of a piece of land so that the spectator may observe the habitat of moles or ants and all their subterranean tunnels. We are going to watch this recording in reverse. The hand moves backwards through a gallery and slowly fills it with the clotted substance that it leaves behind. Suddenly, inexplicably, it leaves a rock, as if it had just laid an egg. And so, little by little, it fills in the space, leaving a snakelike trail of earth buried, perfectly mimetized with the mold that contains it.

These images, still guided by vision and its archive of experiences, find their double in the tree that exhibits its naked branches in winter. If we stop and recall that its roots, grounded in the earth, are reflected mirrorlike in the branches at the crown of the tree, we may for a moment perceive the anxious, tenacious way in which the branches weave their way into the less dense material of the air. And so the air takes on a kind of body, a counterform.

A mobile mold

The tools that allow us to modify the world leave their mark as they shape it. Sometimes that mark is a fingerprint or the tubular, articulated forms of the finger: after all, the hand is a magnificent tool that has sought to reach out, diversify, multiply and strengthen itself by manufacturing other tools. This is easily confirmed in old sculptors’ workshops filled with gouges, shaping tools, hammers, chisels, saws, and the

like. In today’s world, we would have to add to this fine arts inventory the technological novelties that are, in fact, too many to count, from the Dremel drill to the 3D printer.

Painters have always had brushes and spatulas. The former are versatile molds: sometimes they are able to erase the marks they leave behind. Spatulas have a much harder time being anything

but themselves, inevitably leaving their mark of steel. They say that the eighteenth century French painter Jean Baptiste Simenon Chardin used to hide in his workshop many strange utensils that he employed to paint the variety and wealth of materialities for which his work is known.

While the hand is hugely versatile as a tool for modeling shapes, one thing cannot be overstated:

the straight line is not its forte.

If the hand loses visual guidance and its work goes underground, its performance is even less controllable. This is not changed much by the help of a glove or small shovel. Because of this, if the molds for the shapes are the hand and the arm, it is likely that the resulting shapes to emerge will be figures with extremities, arms made with arms.

Holes To come across an excavation in the street is always somewhat surprising, making the pedestrian’s head spin as it might do upon seeing a traffic accident.

Perhaps this happens because both occurrences share the sign of discontinuity. To the endless number of streets, houses, buildings and trees that dominate the horizon, the hole becomes a fine coat of decoration that is weakly affixed to the consistent material of earth.

A hole in the ground allows us to feel, for a few moments, the infinite depth beneath our feet. This is something that occasionally occurs as we stand at the railing of a boat: suddenly we see the almost anguish-producing image of the volumes of water beneath the feet along with the marvel and the mystery of underwater life.

In a bad movie based on Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth, we observe a vehicle with a laser at its tip that allows it to travel to the interior of the Earth. This fantastic image tells us that just as we sail the seas or fly through the skies, it is possible in principle to travel below the earth. Its “only” problem is the issue of the density of matter.

The person who digs is, in general, possessed by two types of passions: to seek depth and to connect. The first passion has to do with a desire for adventure and discovery. This type of emotion transforms the hand into a small body whose gaze is determined by the imagination.

The second emotion is connected to the marvel of encounter and coincidence. A hand that finds another beneath the sand produces surprise even if it was entirely preordained. The same thing occurs when the two tips of a tunnel being excavated suddenly touch. This joy is the joy of reconnecting and of the triumph of logic.

Thinking with one’s hands

There is a construction device that consists of making vertical holes where subterranean beams need to be put in place.

An excavation is made in the precise location, and then a steel structure is inserted into which concrete is poured in order to fill the space that remains. Through this procedure the reinforced concrete mass awaits the concrete slab it is intended to support.

This planned, predefined method of excavating evidently bears little relation to the kind of free

excavation kids do at the beach.

When children dig, their plans are always temporary, changing according to their imaginations and fantasies in their quest to find a treasure. In the case of the beams, if the workers find some half-buried structure, this is considered an annoyance.

The important thing is moving ahead with the construction.

In neither case is it possible to abandon the visual principle that nourishes the imagination of the subterranean advances. In the first case, the result is anticipated by the project set forth in the blueprint, which only needs to conform to reality. In the second case there is an evolution in which the act of touching stimulates the visual imagination.

Yet the two senses do not naturally converge at one point.

Instead, their memories feed the heterogeneous thought in which the sense of sight seems to predominate. What was visually imagined from the sense of touch does not coincide with the visual reality of the result.

Unlike those who can see, blind people think by using the sense of touch as their source of experience. They cannot help but imagine the visual from the point of view of the tactile. That is how Diderot’s blind man defined the

eye: “It is an organ upon which the air produces the effect of my cane upon my hand.” And he continues by saying that “This is so true that when I place my hand between your eyes and an object, my hand is present for you, but the object is absent.

The same thing happens when I search for one object with my cane but find another.” Another eloquent definition is the one he offers for the mirror: “A machine, he responded, that places things in relief far from where they are physically, if they are conveniently located in relation to the mirror. This is like my hand, but I don’t need to rest it next to an object in order to feel it.”

The discrepancies and coherences between the brain and the reception of the senses may be analyzed experimentally via the Necker Cube, the name that its eponymous inventor gave to an optical illusion he devised in 1832. The gaze rests upon the axonometrics of a linearly drawn cube. As you look at it you can see how our brains allow us to perceive the image in two alternative senses, but never simultaneously, suggesting that visual perception may choose different interpretations of one single phenomenon.

This experiment becomes even more astonishing when the linear cube is made of wire and is three-dimensional. If you hang it from one of its vertices and can perceive it as inverted, it seems to follow the viewer as it moves in space. Now, if you take it from the inferior vertex and make it spin, the most unexpected phenomenon occurs: it spins in the opposite direction and the fingers feel how the wire takes on an elastic quality. What happens here is that the brain modifies tactile perception to justify what is perceived visually, so as to maintain the coherence that it has learned to accept and expect.

From the described experiment we may deduce that perception is not something a priori but in fact is developed through experience.

If a blind man recovers his vision, he will not be able to connect his tactile knowledge of the sphere with its image. This does not mean that he will be unable to establish the connection.

He will be able to do so after he learns how.

In light of this information as precedent, we might be led to think that the visual arts (what an optical emphasis!) evolve insofar as our registers of experience and thought increase. The positivized volumes of tunnels that we see here might be understood as experiments of perception and thought that leave evidence of their differences and difficulties.

All that is needed is a new language or new articulations of the language in order to interpret the suggestions.

An Eye for an Eye Ignacio Gumucio

An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth... I repeat this sentence over and over. I have offered to help Francisca do some of her day-to-day work, and with a metal cup I extract an ounce of earth. I deposit it in a pile that, as she likes to remind me, is exactly the same size as the hole I just helped form.

Francisca likes to pretend that this excavation is a tunnel we are digging from prison. I imagine a convict condemned to a sentence that will last exactly as long as it will take him to finish digging an escape tunnel.

I recite other possible combinations of the Law of Moses thinking of the retribution I will demand for the uncomfortable work I am doing: minute by minute, stain by stain, rock by rock, earth and earth and more earth. I continue working, knowing that the Law of Retribution is the only rule of equivalence that Francisca SĂĄnchez will allow for the moment. Her art is, I think, an attempt to find that lost proportionality and re-establish the lex talionis, the law of retribution for something identical or similar.

This is what I have seen her do many times, take something in a reduced version and restore it to a similar proportion.

She might make a head out of a photograph of a face. Or elicit a cascade of paper from photocopies of the pages of books with photographs of rivers. Or treat a cardboard shirt like a person sitting down. Connect the flat outer shells of something to rediscover a lost object. Fill the silhouette of a nose with material until the thing occupies the space it should, so that it is presented justly, as she would say.

This is what Francisca looks for: a kind of justice. A justice of things and materials, a Code of Hammurabi for cement, plaster, and paper.

So what are the cement forms that Francisca extracts from the earth?

They are, more than anything, things that are just: instruments of justice in which the lump is the retribution for a hole, which is the just retribution for an arm that excavated, which is the retribution for a finger that scratched.

It was just after seeing the film Andréi Rublev by Tarkovsky that Francisca brought up the idea of making molds underground.

In one scene, the film depicts the long process involved in the construction of a bell. We see a group of Russians commandeered by a child of about thirteen digging a massive hole in the earth to cast the bell.

In the movie, it is very hard to understand the system used in the fifteenth century to cast this piece, which measured several meters in diameter. We almost never see the piece in its entirety.

The bell does not ring while it’s buried and, in a kind of solidarity, it is also almost invisible. The images rather than the object itself serve to describe: scaffolding,

mud, straw, fire, the shouts and the incredulity of the workers as they gaze upon this feat.

Francisca became fascinated with the uncertainty represented in that scene and kept asking herself how on Earth they had done it. This staggering enterprise ultimately finishes in an enormously solid object: a bell that weighs a several tons.

The inability to see produces something firm and heavy, a line of reasoning that to Francisca felt like a working method. Moreover, in the closed eyes of the little boy who leads the workers in the film, she detected an essential quality of what is just. Not for nothing is justice represented as a woman blindfolded, since blindness is a condition that guarantees equanimity in practice.

King Solomon closed his eyes and to deliver justice availed himself of a sword, because he knew that his eyes and ears alone might betray him. He subjected a baby in his hands to a steely threat. He proposed the baby as one thing, and that was how he was able to discern for certain the child’s nature and origin.

We believe that we come to understand things through our senses but we ought to be wary of them. On their own the senses are not enough, and together they can be deceptive. Our only recourse is to doubt—but with a method, by blinding our different modes of understanding, one at a time.

The movie See No Evil, Hear No Evil features two men: a blind man played by Richard Pryor and a deaf man played by Gene Wilder. As the sole witnesses to a crime, each of them possesses information that is irrelevant on its own, but quite revealing when combined. It is something like a comic version of Molyneux’s problem: if a man born blind can feel the differences between shapes such as spheres and cubes, could he similarly distinguish those objects by sight if given the ability to see? And so the men in the movie are unable to connect their experiences.

So, in order to understand, curiosity is not enough. How is it possible to prove the reality of the ideas we form of the world around us?

Just like Solomon, you have to transform them into things and then subject them to tests of steel: bury them underground, harden them, turn them into masses, spin them around in order to truly see them for the first time.

This summer Francisca made a hole in the sand at a beach and filled it with plaster to see the shape her blindness might take.

Then she thought of a tunnel that might connect two holes in the sand. Blindly she dug, filled in and extracted a shape.

Francisca looked at the lump, pleased by the distance between the prediction she had made in her mind and the result that her eyes gazed at. She baptized the sculptures with names of things similar to these unexpected forms; La portada de Antofagasta, which alludes to a rock formation in a beach near the city of the same name; La araña, the spider; or El paraíto, the little man standing. She planned new forms for excavating in the ground and in each piece, the distance between the prediction and the resulting thing shifted but something was maintained.

Sometimes it was the material

that betrayed the devised plan, or the shape, or the earth’s resistance to excavation.

New shapes emerged; shapes that were just, that were the legitimate daughters of the equation between a plan, its blind execution and a material that hardens everything.

Francisca finally installed her setup in the courtyard behind Las Encinas 3370, of the Art Department at the Universidad de Chile, and commanded a squad that looked as if they were working in a minefield. Stepping aside holes and marks in the ground, they followed a plan that was as precise as it was invisible.

The instructions seemed almost military in nature: today the task is to connect four holes in the middle, underground. The battalion, nevertheless, is being ordered to submit to blindness and surprise.

They have already disinterred ten forms and five more await them underground. The cement pieces take weeks to properly harden, and then they are removed and assembled in a line. When I look at the figures arranged like that, as Francisca arranges them, wiped clean, the

inverse of what they were when they were removed from the ground, it’s hard to recognize the procedure used to mold them.

At first glance we cannot understand the methodological chain that I have described in this essay. The sculptures themselves propose shapes that we recognize as exact, pertinent, and just.

These are pieces that cannot be summarized by telephone (someone might say that they are arches with a lot of bent pieces or sections, and would never describe the silhouette), and they don’t refer to anything typical, either. In this sense they are utterly strange and yet there is nothing capricious about them. They are logical, direct, didactic things.

The lumps of cement explained and continue to explain something; they are the remaining letters of what Paul Valéry called a deeper education. He said, “The deeper education consists of unlearning one’s first education.” Day by day, shape by shape, Francisca Sánchez traces the new lessons of her new education.

Sand Casting Sculpture Workshop

The workshop took place on the beach, using sand as a mold.

The participants worked in groups, pairs or individually, digging sand tunnels which generated communicating spaces under the surface.

We prepared the mixture by sprinkling plaster on salt water and then proceeded to pour it into the excavation, turning the tunnels into molds. We filled the molds until the plaster had reached the surface and leveled with the sea.

Once the mixture had set and with the help of some shovels, we began the excavation, destroying the molds to dig up the figures.

Once they were on the surface, we carried them towards the sea and washed them; this process revealed the markings of the fingers that had raked the tunnels that served as molds.

Sand Casting Sculpture Workshop was performed by Francisca Sánchez on Pichilemu beach on July 22, 23 and 24 of 2014 with the help of Rodrigo Vargas, the participation of the Pichilemu community and the collaboration of Agustín Ross Cultural Center.

Francisca Sanchez was born in Santiago in 1975. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology and a master’s degree in Visual Arts, both from the Universidad de Chile.

During 2004 she participated in the residency De Ateliers in Amsterdam and two years after that she joined the research program La Seine at l’École nationale supérieure des beauxarts in Paris. During her time abroad she received funding from her host institutions, allowing her to dedicate her time exclusively to experimentation and systematic work in the studio. This defined her artistic work, in which she views the practice of sculpture as a methodology to understand all things by re-creating them.

In 2009 she returned to Chile and co-founded the vaticanochico collective and editorial, along with María Berríos and Ignacio Gumucio. vaticanochico promotes curiosity as the mechanism that triggers knowledge and autodidacticism. She currently lives and works in Santiago, dividing her time between her studio practice and teaching at the Universidad Diego Portales School of Arts.

Catalina Valdés is an art historian currently teaching at the Art Department of the Universidad Alberto Hurtado.

Her particular field of interest includes the relationships between art, nature and science.

She has specialised in twentiethcentury South American art, in the frame of which she is developing her doctoral thesis about twentieth-century representations of the Andes mountain range between Chile and Argentina.

Pablo Ferrer is a visual artist currently teaching at the Visual Art Department of the Faculty of Arts in the Universidad de Chile and at the School of Arts at the Universidad Diego Portales. His work has appeared in individual and collective exhibitions both in Chile and abroad. In Chile he has exhibited at, among other venues, Matucana 100, Galería Animal, Galería Gabriela Mistral, Muro Sur, D21, Sala Sam, and the first edition of the “Chile Triennale” at the MAC. Internationally his work has been shown at various art fairs and collective exhibitions in Mexico City, Athens, Brussels, Lima, Buenos Aires, Bogota, Madrid and Berlin.

Ignacio Gumucio is a visual artist currently teaching at School of Arts in the Universidad Diego Portales and at the School of Arts at the Universidad Andrés Bello.

His work has appeared in individual and collective exhibitions both in Chile and abroad. In Chile he has exhibited at venues including Galería AFA, Sala Gasco, MAC, Galería Gabriela Mistral, Galería Animal, the Museo Salvador Allende and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes. Internationally his work has been shown at the Jack S. Blaton Museum, the Espace Louis Vuitton, the American Society, the Korean National Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Eighth edition of the Cuenca Biennale.
