elcome to the 19th Cutting Edge Bull sale. It’s hard for Vicki & I to believe, as one of the original founders, it’s been that many sales. Heck the kids were just little and look at them now. Both are very involved in Agriculture and assuring the success and future of our farm. For the past 19 years we all survived drought, market swings and global situations and the old saying stays true, hold onto the cow’s tail & she’ll pull you through. Good times are only going to get more frequent. One thing hasn’t changed for us and that’s raising better cattle. Over the years our herd has grown to 300 purebred and commercial cows. We diversified into Simmental genetics about 12 years ago. With that many and with the kids onboard it’s only going to grow. With space limited at calving time we started a spring herd about seven years ago and now a fall calving herd three years ago. I believe there’s four off age bulls in this year’s sale, that’s the reason for their birthdates. We have a strong set of bulls this year and are proud to bring them to town. I believe we started them right; pail fed oats at weaning and turned them out on Fall Rye grass for the months of September and most of October, then switched to a high roughage TMR. To use EPDs effectively you must understand how they work. Keeping in mind that you cannot compare EPD numbers between breeds or even between Red Angus and Black Angus.

The EPD Averages listed below are the average of all the registered Canadian Black Angus and all the Canadian Red Angus. To use EPDs effectively you must understand how they work.

Example: Imagine you are interested in purchasing a couple of bulls for your herd.

You are looking at the EPDs in a sale catalogue. Bull A has a weaning weight EPD of +10 and Bull B has a weaning weight of +60. What does that mean? How can you use the EPDs to choose between the two bulls?

If these animals were randomly mated with 10 similar cows, we would expect the group average weaning weight of Bull A’s offspring to be 50 lbs lighter than that of Bull B’s (60-10=50).

EPD Black Angus BW 0.4 with a 16% - should offer better calving ease than the average of 2.0 (50%), and the EPD Black Angus YW 116 at 4% should produce higher Yearling Weights that are above the average of 95 (50%).

It would be easier if we could assume that the highest EPDs are the best.

Unfortunately, it isn’t that simple.

Like most decisions, using EPDs for sire selection involves tradeoffs. For example, bulls with high growth EPDs (WW & YW) may sire calves with a higher birth weight as well.

And there may be other impacts on your operation to consider.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS SEMEN RESERVE: The sellers reserve the right to collect semen on any bull, for in-herd use on any bull in their consignment. Semen will be collected at sellers expense and buyers convenience.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Errors in this catalogue will be corrected by announcements from the block at sale time & such announcments will take precedent over any printed material. Any disputes will be settled by the auctioneer.

ACCIDENTS: Although every precation will be taken, All Persons who attend the Sale do so at their own risk. The owners, management, the sales staff assume no liability, legal, or otherwise for any reason.

CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION: A certificate of registration duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer by the breeder for each registered animal after complete and full payment has been made.

INSURANCE: Bulls who go back the the seller’s farm must be insured by the buyer, insurance agents will be in attendence.

DELIVERY: Bulls picked up on sale day or prior to March 15, 2024 will receive $100 cash or $200 sale credit (towards the farm purchased from) to the 2025 sale.

Delivery will commence following the sale at the sellers convenience.

TERMS: The terms of sale are cash or cheque. All cattle must be settled for at the conclusion of the auction. Cattle will not be released from the sale premises until payment is received in full, unless other arrangements have been made proir to the sale with the individual contributer. Every animal sells to the highest bidder, in the case of disputes, the auctioneer’s decision will be final, and becomes the risk of the purchaser. We reserve the right to withhold animals from shipment for whom payments have not been received prior to departure times.

BUYERS REGISTRATION: Buyers please register for a buyer number at the office prior to purchasing.

BREEDING GUARANTEE: All bulls are guaranteed to be fertile & reproductively sound in accordance with the rules & regulations recommended by the breed associations. All bulls will be semen tested.

SEMEN TESTING: As this sale takes place when most of the bulls are just over 12 months old, and our weather can be unpredictably cold, the bulls may need to return to the farm after the sale for semen testing when they have matured more and the weather is more favorable. This also offers you a reliable test closer to actual breeding season.
