NOT JUST ANOTHER HOUSEBUILDER
Led by family values and guided by almost 60 years of experience, Freeman Homes is quietly redefining what it means to design and curate homes that genuinely stand apart from the crowd.
Freeman Homes isn’t trying to be a mass-volume housebuilder. Instead, it’s focused on being the most considered in the truest sense – thoughtful, conscientious, and driven by attention to detail at every stage.
INDEPENDENT, AND PROUD OF IT
As a second-generation family business, Freeman Homes is independently run – an increasingly rare thing in the world of housebuilding. The company acts as its own builder and contractor, retaining complete control over the process from the foundations up. The result? A level of quality and attention to detail that’s hard to replicate when things are outsourced or volume driven. Being independent means the team is deeply invested – not just financially, but emotionally – in the homes they create and the people who live in them. That family-first mindset shapes everything they do, from their long-term thinking to the way they treat their customers.
DESIGNED FOR LIVING, BUILT TO LAST
These aren’t off-the-shelf homes – far from it. Freeman Homes properties are carefully designed in partnership with leading architects, with layouts tailored to suit how people really live today, and tomorrow. Think flowing layouts, smart storage, generous gardens, and flexible spaces that evolve with you. From utilities that double up as boot rooms or spaces to clean muddy paws, to snugs for cosy film nights; scenic sunrooms for hobbies, and pantries for keen cooks and home bakers – every element has been designed with intention. There’s real thought behind how rooms connect, how natural light enters the home, and how indoor and outdoor spaces work together. It’s the kind of considered design that makes a house feel like a home from day one. And it’s not just about what’s inside. The way the homes are positioned in relation to one another creates private corners, kerb appeal, and a genuine sense of place. These are communities designed to be lived in – not just looked at.
DISTINCTIVE IN THE DETAILS
One of the standout features of Freeman Homes is their Signature Specification. While many developers charge extra for finishing touches, Freeman Homes includes things that often come as add-ons elsewhere: turfed gardens and flooring are all included, along with NEFF integrated kitchen appliances, Porcelanosa tiles, underfloor heating, generous patios finished in statement paving, herringbone flooring, oak veneer doors, and classic porches.
There’s also room to personalise. The Freeman Choice options and upgrade range allow buyers to fine-tune their interiors and make each home truly their own – whether through enhanced finishes, additional features, or sustainability-led extras.
In keeping with their thoughtful approach, Freeman Homes incorporates wildlife-friendly landscaping and features, sustainable technologies such as solar PV panels and air source heat pumps, and employs pioneering timber frame construction to deliver energy-efficient, EPC A-rated properties with zero-carbon living capability.
Sales & Operations Director Hayley Coombs puts it simply: “Every detail is there for a reason. Our aim is to create homes that are a pleasure to live in, rewarding to own, and reflective of the people who choose them.”
RIGHT PLACE, RIGHT FEELING
Freeman Homes developments are as much about location as they are about layout. The team is known for its knack for selecting locations that offer all the benefits of rural living – scenic views, open space, and strong communities – without sacrificing access to amenities or connectivity.
Each location is chosen not just for how it looks on a map, but for how it feels on foot. From quintessential Cotswold charm to iconic Herefordshire hillsides, the locations often sit just outside the tourist hotspots, avoiding the crowds – beautiful places with real character, close to nature but never cut off. It’s this balance of place, privacy, and practicality that makes them such a compelling proposition.
Freeman Homes isn’t about volume targets. It’s about crafting something better, thoughtfully. And in a landscape full of repetition, that quiet distinction speaks volumes.
THE REWARDS OF RESERVING OFF PLAN
Early reservations allow you to personalise key finishes and select upgrades that make your home unique. It’s a chance to shape your space before construction finishes, creating a home that feels right from day one.

FROM LEGAL BRIEFS TO BOLD BELIEFS
Hayley Coombs on Leadership, Growth and the QuoLux Effect.
As we delve into the multifaceted world of leadership and personal development, we catch up with Hayley Coombs, whose integrated approach to life offers a compelling blueprint for success and fulfilment. Her leadership evolution, shaped in part by her journey with QuoLux™, the leadership development company behind the acclaimed LEAD™ programme, is a testament to the power of reflection, continuous learning and a genuine zest for life.
"I never had a rigid career path in mind," Hayley begins, "but I did have an insatiable desire to learn from a very early age." This passion for knowledge saw her excel academically at school, relishing exams. Her pursuit of law at Warwick wasn’t driven by a desire to become a lawyer, but rather by a determination to challenge herself. University led to law school, then a training contract with a law firm in Cardiff. After several years working as a corporate lawyer, an exciting opportunity to join MF Freeman enticed Hayley into the world of
construction. Her innate adaptability and willingness to embrace new challenges gave her the foresight to recognise the potential to grow the business and foster a personalised experience for both internal and external customers.
IGNITING A NEW SPARK: THE LEADERSHIP JOURNEY
Fifteen years after qualifying as a lawyer, a new academic spark ignited for Hayley as she embarked on a leadership journey. "LEAD taught me so much and built the foundations of the leader I am today," she reflects. Beyond providing the tools to tackle real-life leadership challenges, the course imparted a crucial lesson: reflection. "Not something I found easy at first, as I naturally move through life at 100 miles an hour," she admits. Today, however, reflection has become an integral part of her daily practice.
Her journey with QuoLux™ continued, enhancing her skills in business planning, strategic leadership and innovation. This culminated in an MBA, during which she
researched customer service excellence and applied her findings to the internal customer concept.
"I really enjoyed completing my MBA, and I still find myself analysing, reflecting and obsessing over customer service wherever I go. I find it fascinating, especially when it influences other behaviours."
She lights up while describing a recent discovery: "I came across a garden furniture manufacturer, Oxley’s, based in the Cotswolds, who promise to buy their products back if you no longer need them. A promise that looks after the planet while enhancing the customer experience."
WORK & LIFE, SEAMLESSLY INTEGRATED
Hayley’s leadership journey has offered her invaluable life lessons."You need a plan, or you drift!" she says, a powerful reminder
to take charge of one’s personal narrative. Each year, she sets out a personal plan, detailing how she’ll spend her time and what she aims to achieve. At year’s end, she reflects on her progress and outlines goals for the next chapter.
"YOU NEED A PLAN, OR YOU DRIFT."
Despite thriving on being busy, Hayley recognises the importance of carving out time for herself.
"I try to do something each day that slows me down. It might be an early morning yoga session, a walk in the sunshine or a moment of meditation. Planning moments of calm into each day is essential. Time is the one thing we all receive in equal
measure, and how we plan it determines our ability to achieve what truly matters."
She adds:"Many people plan their working day meticulously but give little thought to how they spend the rest of it. That’s how routines form. Reflecting on my day has been a game changer. It makes tomorrow better than today."
Leadership, she notes, has also honed her social intelligence and deepened her openness to others’ ideas. "It’s important to listen and give people a voice. Some of the best ideas come from people you might not initially think to ask. I meet a lot of people

BROADWAY
Lose the map and find the magic, Broadway is a village best explored slowly.
Cradled beneath the gentle slopes of Fish Hill, Broadway is one of the Cotswolds’ most refined and unhurried villages. Its broad High Street is shaded by horse chestnut trees and lined with rows of honey-coloured limestone buildings, many of which date back to the 16th century. It’s the kind of place that makes slowing down feel effortless, where every shopfront and gallery invites you to linger just a little longer.
At Bloomery, hand-tied bouquets and seasonal workshops honour each of the seasons. A few doors along, Cotswold Trading is a favourite for gifts, homewares and beautifully designed details. For a dose of indulgence, Dormy House Hotel sits just above the village, offering a mix of countryside comfort and contemporary design. The spa is a destination in itself, complete with a fire-and-ice thermal suite and crackling fireside nooks to relax in afterwards. The dining here is just as appealing: The Back Garden champions local produce in its seasonal menus, while MO offers an intimate tasting experience with just twelve seats and a different story on every plate.
Tucked just off the High Street, Otis & Belle is the sort of bakery people return to again and again. Their flaky pastries and rustic sourdough are lovingly made.
Broadway also has a strong creative spirit. The Broadway Museum and Art Gallery, housed in a 17th-century coaching inn, runs exhibitions in partnership with the Ashmolean Museum, where old masters sit comfortably alongside modern ceramics. For something with a little more kick, the Cotswolds Distillery shop nearby offers tastings of its award-winning dry gin and smooth single malts.
On the edge of the village, the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway provides a nostalgic trip through countryside that feels lifted from a painting. Or take the scenic route on foot, following the Cotswold Way up to Broadway Tower. With views stretching across sixteen counties, a 50-acre deer park and a Cold War-era bunker hidden below, it’s one of the Cotswolds’ most unexpected highlights.
Broadway isn’t a place for ticking boxes. It’s a village made for wandering, for chance discoveries, and for slowing the pace. Whether it’s a bloom wrapped in brown paper, a dram you’ve never tried before or a book you weren’t looking for, Broadway has a way of staying with you.

LEDBURY
Independent spirit and historic streets await in Ledbury
Tucked against the western edge of the majestic Malvern Hills and just a half-hour east of Hereford, Ledbury is a market town with quiet allure and a strong sense of self. Independent shops flourish here, supported by a loyal local community and a steady stream of curious visitors.
In summer, the town hosts two standout events. The Ledbury Poetry Festival is the UK’s largest of its kind, attracting worldrenowned poets for readings, workshops and performances. Just outside town, Lakefest takes over the grounds of Eastnor Castle with live music, food, and familyfriendly activities beneath the historic estate’s lakeside setting.
Wander down the High Street and you’ll discover a collection of beautifully curated independents. The Ledbury Leaf is a greenery-filled haven for houseplants, planters and botanical gifts. A few doors away, Tusk Collection offers seasonal homewares and accessories in muted palettes and timeless textures.
'ALL THE ESSENTIALS FOR A LAID-BACK MALVERN HILLS PICNIC'
In winter, Ledbury transforms. Voted by The Guardian as one of Europe’s best Christmas shopping destinations, the town combines festive sparkle with small-town ease. “There may be more obvious places for a festive UK shopping spree,” the paper wrote, “but little Ledbury in Herefordshire is a picturesque, stress-free option.”
Food and drink are thoughtfully catered for. Both Hay Wines and The Wine Shed offer expert picks of wine and spirits, alongside cheeses and accompaniments perfect for picnics or gifts. For a more rustic offering, The Nest at Little Verzons Farm is just outside town. Part café, part farm shop, its shelves are filled with local olive oils, chutneys, crackers and all the essentials for a laidback Malvern Hills picnic.
Ledbury’s strong commitment to sustainability is woven into everyday life. At Seed & Source, refillable pantry goods and household items are beautifully displayed with minimal packaging. Wallers Butchers, a local favourite, is known for high-quality, locally sourced meats from surrounding farmland.
For something to read over lunch, Ledbury Books & Maps offers a peaceful pause. This independent bookshop stocks an eclectic mix – from literary classics to works by contemporary and local authors.
Just outside the centre, Eastnor Castle brings grandeur to the landscape, offering a range of family-friendly attractions. Its lakeside walks, seasonal events and adventure playgrounds are a hit with younger visitors, while the off-road Land Rover experience satisfies the more adventurous.
Back in the heart of Ledbury, the 17thcentury Market House, raised on timber stilts, stands as one of the town’s defining features. It hosts a twice-weekly charter market, where stalls brim with fresh produce, handmade crafts, plants, homeware and unique gifts. A striking example of black-and-white timbered architecture, it’s as photogenic as it is functional – a perfect focal point for your visit.

SUSTAINABILITY STARTS WITH STRUCTURE
By Blane Pannell, Sales & Marketing Director, Taylor Lane Timber Frame Construction.
For over 25 years, Taylor Lane Timber Frame has partnered with Freeman Homes to deliver highquality, sustainable homes across the region. Based in Herefordshire, we’re proud to be a local supplier supporting Freeman Homes’ commitment to sustainable building practices.
One of the most impactful decisions a housebuilder can make is the choice of construction method. At Freeman Homes, timber frame construction is the foundation - literally and figuratively - of their long-term sustainability strategy. As someone who lives and breathes timber frame construction (and lives in a Freeman Home), I want to break down what this means for you as a homeowner, and why it’s worth paying attention to.
THERMAL PERFORMANCE THAT WORKS YEAR-ROUND
One of the biggest benefits of timber frame is its natural thermal efficiency. Timber itself is an excellent insulator, and when combined with modern insulation techniques, it helps homes retain warmth in winter and stay cool in summer. This isn’t just about comfort though; it has a direct impact on your energy bills. Timber frame homes can exceed Building Regulation standards for energy efficiency without the need to overfill wall cavities, making them a more sustainable and cost-effective choice.
LOW MAINTENANCE FROM THE START
Unlike traditional wet construction methods, timber frame is a dry build process. This means less shrinkage, fewer issues with cracking plaster, and the ability to decorate right after completion without waiting for the property to "dry out". For homeowners, this translates to fewer repairs, less waiting around, and a faster route to making your new house feel like home.
SUSTAINABLE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
Timber frame is at the forefront of environmentally friendly construction and plays a vital role in helping businesses achieve net zero carbon emissions. Compared to masonry construction, timber modern methods of construction (MMC) have been shown to reduce carbon output by five tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per dwelling. At Taylor Lane, only responsibly sourced timber from certified, sustainably managed forests is used.
PRECISION YOU CAN TRUST
Timber frame construction offers more than just environmental credentials - it’s also about quality. All our frames are made in factory-controlled conditions, allowing for greater precision and consistency than site-based construction. The result is a robust, durable structure built to exacting standards and erected by skilled specialists, ensuring the integrity of the frame is carried through from workshop to home.
A HOME THAT FEELS JUST RIGHT
Timber frame homes don’t just perform well - they feel different. Thanks to better insulation and airtight construction, they offer a quieter, more comfortable environment. Whether it’s the warmth underfoot in winter or the calm of a well-insulated living space, it’s something you really notice once you move in.
A TRUSTED PARTNERSHIP
Freeman Homes and Taylor Lane have worked closely together for more than two decades, united by a shared belief in building better homes - responsibly, locally, and to a standard we’d be happy to live in ourselves.
Choosing a Freeman Home means choosing thoughtful design, quality craftsmanship, and a commitment to sustainability at every stage - including the very frame your home is built upon.
THE NEW STANDARD
Freeman Homes is redefining sustainable living, having delivered over 200 zero carbon homes across Gloucestershire and Herefordshire. Committed to transparency and measurable impact, the company is taking meaningful strides towards becoming a net zero carbon business. There’s no greenwashing, no shortcuts—just real progress, underpinned by a genuine belief in doing the right thing and providing homes built for the future.
With plans to build up to 100 homes each year and construction underway at four new locations across the region, Freeman Homes is setting a new standard with its EPC A-rated, zero carbon living properties. But what does that actually mean—and what are the benefits for you?
SUSTAINABLE LIVING MADE SIMPLE
As an independent, family-run business, Freeman Homes consistently raises the bar for energy efficiency, integrating cutting-edge technologies from leading brands into every development. Their homes include:
• Air Source Heat Pumps by NIBE – highly efficient systems that extract heat from the outside air—even in colder months—to warm your home.
• Roof-Integrated Solar PV Panels by Viridian – sleek, unobtrusive solar panels, with optional battery packs for added energy efficiency.
• EV Charging Points – supporting electric and hybrid vehicles. The company also uses advanced timber frame construction, which significantly enhances thermal performance, while reducing both maintenance costs and carbon emissions. These thoughtful innovations allow residents to adopt a low- or zerocarbon lifestyle—without compromising on quality or comfort.
CREATING ECO-FRIENDLY SPACES
Freeman Homes takes a holistic approach to sustainability, extending its values beyond the front door. Biodiverse landscaping supports local wildlife, while a significant portion of land is intentionally left fallow. Features such as bat and bird boxes, bee bricks, and hedgehog-friendly fencing are carefully incorporated into the design of each property. Additional eco-conscious touches—like compost bins, rainwater butts, and dedicated recycling areas—further reduce environmental impact.
A VISION FOR THE FUTURE
Hayley Coombs, Sales and Operations Director at Freeman Homes, expresses her pride in the company's achievements: “We’re extremely proud of reaching this milestone, which reflects the growing demand for sustainable new builds,” she states. “As an independent housebuilder, we can embrace the latest renewable technologies and exceed regulatory requirements to create a new template for sustainable construction and eco-living.”
Freeman Homes also reinvests profits back into the communities where they operate, contributing over £1 million across their current developments to support education, healthcare, transportation, and sports initiatives.
ZERO CARBON LIVING
PIONEERING CLIMATE-POSITIVE
DEVELOPMENT
In a regional first, Freeman Homes are now introducing a climate-positive building to an upcoming development, serving as a pilot project for cutting-edge sustainable practices. This ambitious initiative aims not only to achieve net-zero emissions, but also to create a regenerative building that contributes more to the environment than it consumes in resources.
“We’ve pinpointed seven of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals that are particularly relevant to us, and we’re striving to make a difference through our sustainability framework,” Hayley adds. “To meet the challenge of achieving netzero, we must take meaningful action with innovative strategies that promote the widespread use of renewable technologies in construction.”

WHAT IS AN EPC A-RATED PROPERTY?
An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) assesses a building’s energy efficiency and carbon emissions, rated from A (most efficient) to G. An EPC A-rated home offers excellent insulation, efficient heating systems, and lower energy consumption— resulting in reduced utility bills and a lighter environmental footprint. These homes are increasingly in demand among buyers prioritising sustainability, comfort, and long-term value.
WHAT IS A ZERO CARBON LIVING PROPERTY?
A zero carbon living property is designed to produce zero or even negative carbon emissions. These homes feature innovative energy-efficient designs, renewable energy resources, and high levels of insulation to minimise energy consumption. By reducing their environmental impact, zero carbon living properties play a vital role in combatting climate change, appealing to those seeking sustainable lifestyles.
RIGHT-SIZE, DON’T COMPROMISE
Rather than choosing to upsize or downsize, buyers across the country are increasingly seeking out homes that are just the right size to suit their lifestyles.
Selling a long-held family home can stir a wave of emotions. But starting a new chapter doesn’t have to mean compromise. In fact, right-sizing can offer a host of advantages that make it a liberating and exciting decision.
FIND THE RIGHT-SIZE PROPERTY FOR YOU
Right-sizing isn’t about less space, it’s about the right space. You might want fewer bedrooms and a larger living area, or a bigger kitchen-diner instead of a formal dining room. For many, it means a similar-sized home that’s simply easier to manage, with a more practical garden.
Freeman Homes’ Sales & Operations Director, Hayley Coombs, explains: “Many of our customers want large living spaces to enjoy and entertain, but no longer need 4 or 5 bedrooms. We design our homes to suit the way our customers want to live.”
Equally important is the setting. Freeman Homes ensures its developments offer excellent access to local amenities, strong transport links, and a harmonious connection with the surrounding countryside.

One of the biggest challenges when moving home is navigating the property chain. But buying new often avoids these complications. With no existing owner to wait for, the chain is shorter or nonexistent, making for a simpler, smoother move. Freeman Homes also offers part exchange on your current property, eliminating the need to market your home and streamlining the whole process. Or consider the EasyMove scheme, which helps sell your home and covers your agent’s fees.
MORE TIME FOR WHAT MATTERS
Unlike older homes, a newly built property is ready to go from day one. UK building standards are higher than ever, and Freeman Homes go above and beyond regulations, delivering high-quality, lowmaintenance homes. With a new kitchen and bathrooms, easy-to-care-for garden, and efficient heating systems, you’ll spend less time on chores and more on hobbies, travel or simply enjoying life. Plus, each home comes with a 10-year warranty –two years under builder’s warranty and a further eight with NHBC cover.
A GREENER, MORE COST-EFFECTIVE CHOICE
Right-sizing can free up equity, but the financial benefits don’t end there. Today’s new homes are built to stringent environmental standards, offering far greater energy efficiency.
Freeman Homes delivers EPC A-rated properties with Zero Carbon Living credentials. Expect integrated solar PV panels by Viridian, NIBE air source heat pumps, Project EV car chargers and optional 5kWh battery packs for storing energy. It’s a future-proof, sustainable way to live – and it can significantly reduce your running costs.
SAFE, SECURE AND FUTURE-READY
New builds must meet rigorous safety regulations, including electrical and fire safety standards. With features like smoke alarms, fire doors, and fire-retardant materials, plus modern locks and security systems, you’ll feel safe whether you’re home or away. For those who travel often, this peace of mind makes a new-build ideal for a lock-up-and-leave lifestyle.
CLEVER STORAGE AND THOUGHTFUL DESIGN
Worried about downsizing your possessions? Don’t be. Right-sizing doesn’t mean living small. Modern homes are increasingly designed with smart storage and flexible layouts in mind.
Freeman Homes properties are consistently praised for their generous storage. Most properties include garages, bedrooms with built-in wardrobes and sliding doors, and well-planned kitchens with ample cabinetry and pantry cupboards. Show homes offer a great way to visualise your belongings in the space, and sales teams are on hand to advise.
A HOME THAT REFLECTS YOU
Interior designer Rebecca Jenkins reassures: “People often think their current furniture won’t suit a new build, but mixing old and new creates warmth and individuality. Mirrors, vintage furniture and family heirlooms bring charm.”
With The Freeman Choice, you can personalise your home by selecting flooring, tiles and colour palettes that complement your style and furniture.

AN INSIDER’S CHOICE
As Sales & Marketing Director at Taylor Lane Timber Frame, Blane knows what makes a well-built home – so when he and his partner Aimee chose to purchase a Freeman Home at Oakfields, it spoke volumes. We asked them what stood out about their new home, and why Freeman Homes was the right choice for them.
“Having worked with MF Freeman professionally for over 10 years, knowing the business and the calibre they operate at when it comes to building, I knew that one day I’d find myself in a Freeman Home.
Aimee and I had been toying with the idea of moving and I suggested looking around the Oakfields show home. Being more than aware of the high standard driven by Freeman Homes, I knew the properties were going to match, however as I viewed them from a personal perspective all I had thought was amplified.
Every product within the property had been carefully chosen to ensure it provided nothing else perfect. I believe all these elements have played a huge part in allowing our house to become a home as fast as it did.”

GARDENS
A GARDEN OF POSSIBILITY
Words from Leaf Creative founder and award-winning garden designer Peter Dowle.
There’s something magical about moving into a new home — a fresh start, a blank canvas. And for many, the garden holds the greatest potential. That empty plot outside your window isn’t merely a yard; it’s a space waiting for identity, life, and purpose. In 2025, the garden is no longer an afterthought; it is a seamless extension of your home, where modern living, sustainability, and style converge.
Think beyond lawns and borders. Outdoor kitchens, garden lounges with fire pits, and fully functioning garden offices are redefining how we live outdoors. Today’s gardens are about more than just plants; they’re immersive spaces. The home spa trend has firmly taken root outdoors, from spa pools and wood-fired saunas to icy, Wim Hof-style plunge pools. Step into two degrees of water and emerge glowing with life.
Good garden design begins with the view from your window. Frame your outlook with sculptural plants such as a Japanese Maple, or create a focal point with a central water feature. Balance structure and softness by combining architectural shapes with flowing, wildlife-friendly planting.
A modern garden must be climateconscious. Native and drought-tolerant plants are leading the way, blending beauty with sustainability. Try Salvia ‘East Friesland’ for its rich indigo blooms, or Lavandula ‘Munstead’, loved by bees and noses alike. Tuck Cistus ‘Silver Pink’ into sun-soaked corners and soften edges with the silvery texture of Stachys Byzantina (Lamb’s Ear). Let grasses such as Stipa Tenuissima sway in the breeze, punctuated by airy Verbena Bonariensis and the classic Echinacea Purpurea, ranging from white to deep orange.
This year’s highlights include bold architectural plants such as Cordylines and Yuccas, as well as pollinator magnets like Nepeta, Gaura, and Achillea. Agapanthus and Erigeron offer long flowering periods and vibrant colour through summer and beyond. Remember, your plant choices shape the mood and rhythm of your garden.
For instant impact, invest in statement plants like Acer Palmatum or Cornus Kousa. Think in terms of texture, movement, and seasonality — three elements that bring depth and life to any space. Even small gardens can pack a punch with thoughtful design. Use containers for flexibility, vertical planting to maximise space, and mirrors to reflect light and extend the view.
Create scented, mindful gardens for peace and calm. Japanese influences bring balance and serenity, while smart, eco-friendly features such as bug hotels, wildlife corridors, rain gardens, and solar lighting support local biodiversity and reduce your environmental footprint.
Most importantly, make your garden your own. Start with inspiration and end with identity. Whether wild and natural or crisp and contemporary, your garden is a creative expression of you.
Looking for ideas? Spend an afternoon at Leaf Creative on the A40 near Huntley. Wander through an exceptional selection of plants — from tiny alpines to towering 40-year-old Acers. Soak up the atmosphere, enjoy a barista coffee or lunch among the greenery, and explore a curated range of hygge-inspired furniture, houseplants, and candles.
Leaf Creative was proud to win another Gold Medal at Chelsea 2025, along with Best Tree in Show for its 45-year-old Acer Palmatum ‘Shishigashira’ — affectionately known as Shishi. Let your journey start there.

HEALTH
A GOOD GUT FEELING
What is water kefir? Why does gut health matter? And what exactly is a microbiome? We check in with Tibico Fermentary founder William Shotton to find out.
Tucked away on Townsend Farm near Ross-on-Wye, a quiet revolution in gut health is gently bubbling to life. Meet Tibico – a small-batch fermentary making naturally sparkling water kefir in the Wye Valley. Rich in live cultures and fermented with whole fruit, this probiotic drink is drawing attention from wellness newcomers and gut health enthusiasts alike. And it all began as a kitchen table experiment.
FROM CURIOSITY TO CRAFT
In 2016, William Shotton – a microbiologist and process engineer – began experimenting with fermentation to support his own health. What started with a few jars soon evolved into a thriving operation. Today, Tibico produces over 30,000 bottles a month, supplying customers across the UK from its base at Townsend Farm. Despite this growth, the method remains traditional. Each bottle is fermented for 10 days using whole fruit (much of it locally grown), with no added sugars, sweeteners or artificial flavourings. Everything is raw, unpasteurised and unfiltered.
WHAT IS WATER KEFIR?
If you’ve tried kombucha, you’re halfway there. But unlike kombucha (made with tea) or milk kefir (a dairy product), water kefir is a light, fruity, caffeine-free drink fermented with beneficial bacteria and yeast.
Tibico’s fermentation uses natural sugars and fruit to fuel the process, producing a gently sparkling drink full of probiotic cultures. These support your gut microbiome – the trillions of microbes in your digestive tract that influence digestion, immunity, even mood and brain function.
WHY GUT HEALTH MATTERS
Often called the body’s “hidden organ”, your gut microbiome is home to over 100 trillion microbes. When balanced, it supports digestion, reduces inflammation, regulates mood and boosts immunity.
But stress, processed foods, antibiotics and modern diets can all disrupt this system. That’s why including fermented foods, live cultures and fibre in your diet is more important than ever.
“Your gut bacteria aren’t just passengers – they’re co-pilots,” says Will. “When you feed them the right things, your whole system benefits.”
BILLIONS OF GOOD REASONS
Every bottle of Tibico contains 50 to 70 billion live cultures, robust enough to reach your gut intact. But it’s not just about probiotics – Tibico is also a natural source of B vitamins, vitamin C, amino acids, trace minerals, polyphenols and GABA (a calming neurotransmitter).
Unlike many commercial drinks, it’s never pasteurised or diluted – just raw, alive, and made from natural ingredients. Whether you're new to probiotics or looking for a gentle, effective option, water kefir offers a refreshing way to support your gut – and your wellbeing.

WELLNESS
TURN UP THE HEAT, TAKE THE PLUNGE
Contrast therapy is the invigorating hot and cold wellness ritual taking the UK by storm.
Move over sound baths and wild swimming: there’s a new wellness trend stealing the spotlight, and it’s refreshingly hot and cold. Contrast therapy, the practice of alternating between heat and cold exposure, is sweeping across the UK, promising everything from faster recovery and boosted mood to that elusive post-sauna glow. It’s the go-to ritual for professional athletes, stressed-out city dwellers, and anyone chasing that delicious blend of endorphin-fuelled euphoria and full-body reset. Whether you’re plunging into an ice bath in Cheltenham, sweating it out in a barrel sauna in the Cotswolds, or chilling (literally) in Hereford, contrast therapy is no longer just a Nordic novelty – it’s here to stay.
WHAT IS CONTRAST THERAPY?
Contrast therapy is the practice of alternating between hot and cold exposure—most commonly using a sauna or hot bath followed by a cold plunge or shower. This cycle is typically repeated multiple times in a single session and is designed to support both physical recovery and mental wellbeing.
The heat boosts circulation and promotes relaxation, while the cold kick-starts your body’s natural healing response, reducing inflammation and jolting every nerve into wakefulness. The result? A dynamic duo that leaves you feeling simultaneously invigorated and calm, focused yet deeply relaxed.
It’s a practice rooted in ancient traditions, now served up with modern flair, sleek facilities, and often, a Matcha latte on the side.
THREE HOT & COLD SPOTS TO EXPERIENCE
In Cheltenham, Contrast Wellness is a dedicated recovery and wellness studio. Think traditional saunas, precision-controlled ice baths, and high-tech extras such as compression therapy. Their MyoMaster compression leg pumps are scientifically proven to flush out metabolic waste that has built up during your fitness training. It’s ideal for anyone seeking performance gains or simply a moment of peace in a fast-paced world.

If you prefer your wellness with a side of scenery, head to Scenic Sauna in the Cotswolds. Tucked away at the Far Peak facility, this spot is all about rustic charm and outdoor rituals. Soak in sweeping countryside views from a Finnish-style barrel sauna, then brace yourself for the plunge. Their guided sessions, often led by certified Wim Hof Method instructors, combine
cold immersion with breathwork and mindfulness. Check out their calendar that is packed with special events, such as yoga-sauna Sundays that blend community with self-care.

GAME, SET, PADEL!
It’s hard not to have heard someone casually mention this fast-rising sport that’s taken the UK’s social and sporting circles by storm. Padel is a fun hybrid of tennis gameplay, and the intensity and pace found on a squash court – yet it brings a
WHY TRY PADEL?
Emmanuel Macron, padel is no longer just
the world’s most exciting sports. Played
Beyond the thrills of the game itself, padel offers a unique full-body workout that improves strength, agility, and endurance. Quick footwork, nimble movements, and rapid reactions enhance both fitness and coordination. But there’s more - padel is among the most social of sports. With doubles play at its heart, communication and teamwork are essential, creating an ideal activity to enjoy with friends and family or meet new people within the welcoming community of your local club.
Whether you’re after a casual game or a more competitive challenge, padel fosters an inclusive atmosphere. It’s this accessibility and vibrant community spirit that make it the sport of choice for so many.
THE PADEL PHENOMENON
Padel is one of the fastest-growing sports worldwide. Spain leads the way with over 20,000 courts, while the UK is quickly catching up with a growing number of clubs. The sport’s focus on skill and strategy, rather than raw strength, makes it accessible and enjoyable for players of all levels. And with its easy-to-learn nature, there’s nothing stopping you from joining in.
GETTING STARTED
One of the best things about padel is its accessibility. Whether you’re a seasoned tennis player or trying your first racket sport, padel is remarkably beginner friendly. Many local clubs offer coaching sessions, open-play events, and equipment rentals, so there’s no need to invest in gear immediately.
WHERE TO PLAY
The Padel Club at Gloucester Quays (thepadelclub.co.uk) boasts nine highspecification indoor courts, allowing play year-round regardless of the weather; and Elkstone Studios (elkstone-studios. com) in the Cotswolds pairs padel with a delightful food hall, design showrooms, and fashion boutiques.

GOLF
GET A GRIP OF YOUR GAME
Before the swing, the backswing or the follow-through, there’s the grip. Quietly essential and often overlooked, it’s the true starting point of the game of golf. Herefordshirebased golf pro Tim Hall shares his expert insight into golf club grip options and tips for getting it right.
Agood grip does not draw attention to itself. It feels settled and balanced. It frees the wrists, stabilises the clubface, and sets the rhythm of the swing. A poor grip, on the other hand, sends even the best intentions off course. Shots slice or hook; power is lost.
But when the grip is right, the swing flows and the ball flies true. Let us pause for a moment on this crucial element of the game: how it shapes your mechanics, influences your shots, and how to find the version that suits you best.
A FOUNDATION IN THE HANDS
The grip is more than just a hold, it is a point of connection. From it comes the angle of the clubface at impact, the freedom of your wrist hinge, and the power of your downswing. A grip turned too far left (for right-handed players) leaves the face open, the ball fades. Too far right, and the hook creeps in.
With a neutral grip, the club rests naturally in your hands. The wrists hinge as they should: up and back. The lead wrist rises slightly; the trail wrist folds away. Together, they create the architecture of a powerful swing. As the downswing begins, everything remains connected. Lag builds. Power flows. The clubface returns square. It is a small detail that changes everything, and one you will feel long before you see it.
CHECKPOINTS FOR A RELIABLE GRIP
1
THREE CLASSIC GRIPS, FIND YOUR FIT
The Overlap Grip
Also known as the Vardon grip, it is the most widely used.
• The pinky of your trail hand rests between the fingers of the lead hand.
• Ideal for larger hands and a natural wrist hinge.
• Encourages unity without pressure: smooth and controlled.
The Interlock Grip
Favoured by Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
• The pinky of the trail hand interlocks with the index finger of the lead hand.
• Suited to smaller hands or those who value security.
• Intimate and connected, though it may feel tight for some.
The Ten-Finger Grip
Also called the baseball grip, it’s simple and intuitive.
• All ten fingers wrap around the club evenly.
• Ideal for beginners, juniors, or players recovering from injury.
• Offers freedom, but demands discipline. More hand action means more variability.
Neutral Setup: Look down and check for two to two-and-a-half knuckles on your lead hand. The “V” formed between your thumb and index finger should point just inside your trail shoulder.
2
Pressure: Think five out of tenfirm, but relaxed. Hold the club as you would a tube of toothpaste; with enough pressure for control, but not so much that anything is squeezed out.
3
Wrist Hinge: During the takeaway, your lead wrist should hinge naturally. If it feels tight or forced, your grip may need adjusting. If your game feels off, start at the beginning. Refine your grip. Whether you favour the overlap, interlock, or ten-finger style, the goal remains the same: comfort, connection, and repeatability.

It’s a great way to enjoy countryside views with your companion by your side – and you’re in prime walking and country-pub territory here to plan a full-day out. (Up to two dogs are allowed per group.)
Few places feel more magical than Westonbirt Arboretum in autumn or spring. Dogs are welcome to roam the 250-acre Silk Wood, where you'll find seasonal walking trails, Gruffalo sculptures for the kids, and even doggy ice cream at The Pantry kiosk. Over at Batsford Arboretum, dogs are welcome throughout the gardens, the garden centre, and even the awardwinning café, crowned Café of the Year in the 2024 Gloucestershire Lifestyle Awards.
For just a few glorious weeks from late June to early July, the fields at Cotswold Lavender come alive with colour and scent — and dogs are welcome on leads. It's a dreamy spot for a wander, and a pictureperfect backdrop for some pup portraits that are sure to steal hearts on Instagram.
CANOE THE WYE, HAY-ON-WYE canoethewye.co.uk
Why should dogs miss out on riverside fun? Canoe the Wye welcomes adventurous (and well-behaved) canines on board. Glide down one of Britain’s most beautiful waterways, with your pooch as your paddle partner. Just remember to remove collars and leads for safety, bring fresh water and a collapsible bowl and keep dogs under control around livestock and wildlife. Afterwards, pop into Richard Booth’s Bookshop Café in Hay for tea and cake among the bookshelves, where dogs are welcome to snooze under the table after all the excitement.

TRAVEL
WHEN IN ROME
Italian local Elsa Santangelo takes us on a tour of the diverse facets of this history-filled city.
The first thing that strikes you when you put your foot on Roman ground is its immensity. Everything is huge, superb, chaotic, but it’s also welcoming. Rome is the heart of Italy, and in it is a preserved precious and inestimable piece of the Italian culture.
The Capital is boiling energy, brightness, and nostalgia. The air is filled with the buzz of children playing football in the streets and the enticing aromas of Italian home-cooking floating from kitchen windows and doorways in the alleys.
Where should you start then? It depends on your mood. Rome is so multi-coloured, and each district has its own atmosphere, vibes, and different architecture styles. Become acquainted with the eclectic nature of the Eternal City.
Your first stop should be to enjoy a typical Italian breakfast. Choose from the many coffee bars, take a seat – likely while the bartender offers some friendly banter and probably a few jokes –and order a croissant or, since you are in Rome, a maritozzo con
la panna - the city’s traditional pastry, along with a hot espresso. Drink it in the Italian style - all in a sip, still steaming and without sugar – and maybe then you will understand why Romans are so erratic and agitated when they drive.
Appease your classical side in the historic centre, with its iconic ruins, monumental beauties and awe-inspiring art, and where the signs of the past and the present live peacefully together. After exploring the Colosseum, one of the most beautiful pieces of history in the world, and the neighbouring Roman Forum where poppies grow through Corinthian capitals’ ruins, take a short walk to the remains of the Circus Maximus where chariot races and various sports and athletic competitions took place, the stadium accommodating up to 300,000 spectators. The Pantheon is another of the city’s grand and symbolic monuments to see - the elegant Roman temple of the Gods, which was then converted into a Christian church.
Ignite your extravagant side - Rome is Baroque art in its pure splendor, and the Trevi Fountain, Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, Piazza Navona and St. Peter’s Square are just some of the stunning examples of this theatrical art style. Every side of the city reflects the eclecticism of many important artists: the spontaneous and arrogant temper of Caravaggio with his dramatic chiaroscuro style, the inquietude of Michelangelo for the Sublime, the fragile elegance of Canova, and the eternal awe-inspiring marble sculptures by Bernini. Visit the Borghese Gallery and be amazed by the vivid marble depictions of The Rape of Proserpina, Apollo and Daphne. Rome will be eternally grateful to this artist, who made her even more beautiful with his fountains, his architecture and his creative mind.
It’s time for lunch and you are in Italy, the homeland of pizza. But remember: Italians don’t go to Rome to have pizza! Of course, there are excellent pizzerias here, but the Capital is famous instead for pasta alla carbonara, cacio e pepe, amatriciana, carciofi alla romana and coda alla vaccinara. Roman cuisine traditionally consists of a refined amount of high quality ingredients. Be fussy!
'REMEMBER,
ITALIANS DON’T GO TO ROME TO HAVE PIZZA'
Be vivacious in Trastevere, a small village in the heart of the city, beyond the Tiber River – hence the Romans call it Trans Tiberium. This landmark shows Rome’s rustic side, with its hidden corners, shops, street markets and old-school restaurants. In the evening, this picturesque quarter becomes a trendy destination where people gather in the many bars for a drink, and admire the lights reflecting off the river.
Be elegant in Prati and cool in Monti - two of the city’s most beautiful neighbourhoods. Prati is a succession of elegant streets surrounded by majestic buildings, Art Nouveau villas, and eternal monuments. Nearby there is Castel Sant’Angelo, originally built as Emperor Adrian’s mausoleum, but instead used as a fortress to defend the popes during enemies’ assaults. There is a narrow tunnel that connects Castel Sant’Angelo with the Vatican that provided the popes an escape route in case of danger.
Rione Monti is a creative, lively quartier, where you will find a mixture of artisan shops and chic bars. Get lost in its suggestive narrow streets and raise a toast to the Italian happy hour.
Elicit some romance and admire Rome from some of its iconic viewpoints: from atop Monte Mario – the city’s highest hill - from the “path of lovers” which offers panoramic vistas, or from the Orange Garden - a nostalgic park where bitter orange trees grow and where, nearby, the Vatican Dome can be spotted through a tiny keyhole within the front door of Villa del Priorato di Malta.
Having experienced the city in all its beauty, you’ll likely be as passionate as a true Roman is about his city. As the saying goes, if you love Rome, she will love you back.
