reeman Contracting is one of family-owned MF Freeman’s six divisions. The team contracts on a wide-ranging portfolio of projects, and utilises cutting-edge equipment and techniques to deliver a high-quality, sustainable realisation of both traditional and contemporary works. One of the company’s recent projects was part of an exciting new development at Hartpury University and Hartpury College, a standout educational institute in Gloucestershire and home to rising stars in a variety of sporting disciplines. The £8.8m Sports Academy 2 project provided modern facilities for students, and with all suppliers being selected from the surrounding area, it also helped to boost the local economy.

Freeman Contracting, based in the nearby Forest of Dean, were given an opportunity to tender for the groundworks aspect of the build. This critical stage of construction included excavating and concreting the foundations, pouring the ground floor slabs, installing the drainage system, and external works, including the car park. Designed by SRA Architecture and engineered by DJP Consulting, the new buildings would provide a state-of-theart therapeutic, training and development centre. The project began in July 2017, managed by independent management consultants F3 Group, and was planned to adhere to a tight program in order to deliver against Hartpury’s time requirements.

SPORTS ACADEMY 2 This cutting-edge new facility offers students a wide range of therapeutic and training equipment to help them reach and maintain peak form. Set in a contemporary building designed to provide the optimal environment for focus and rehabilitation, some of the areas within include: ● A biomechanics laboratory complete with HD 3D cameras to record and track movement, three floor surfaces with force plates beneath to measure and evaluate impacts, and digital mirrors – the only ones in the UK – which track and map body images using special segments relating to specific exercise and goals. ● The human performance lab, which contains an altitude chamber to limit oxygen for high-intensity training, treadmills and a portable VO2 analyser, which athletes can carry with them as they train to measure oxygen consumption in real-life scenarios and assess ways to decrease it for improved performance. ● A rehabilitation suite, with an anti-gravity treadmill for those who cannot support their own weight, as well as strength and conditioning equipment. ● A 1500m2 sports hall.

The build progressed rapidly through the initial phases, despite a number of challenges. Freeman Contracting levelled the site, dug the foundations and began laying the drainage. The company had to reroute a number of services that crossed the proposed site, which mainly comprised of water pipes that fed the sprinkler systems to Hartpury’s many sports pitches. As part of the company’s commitment to sustainable practice, the team installed a sustainable drainage system to service Sports Academy 2. These systems, known as SuDS, mimic natural water patterns in order to efficiently and sustainably drain

applied to the Sports Academy car park, allows water to drain through the asphalt into a stone bed, and then trickle down to infiltrate the earth beneath the car park rather than pooling on its surface. Correctly installed, this material can provide a cost-effective car park with a life span of over twenty years, reducing the environmental impact of frequent repairs and replacement. As the project advanced into winter, the weather proved to be increasingly difficult. At the point of trying to pour the concrete in December, the Contracting team were battling a mixture of freezing temperatures, excessive rainfall and snow.

During the final months of the project, the scope of work was increased to encompass some additional car parking to add further capacity for visitors. Contracting Senior Manager Ian Tandy commented, “It is always a pleasure to be involved with local projects, particularly when the client is such a well-recognised and highly respected organisation. It does add an element of pressure because the final product has to be absolutely spot on, even when there’s no flexibility in the project timescales. We were delighted to deliver part of this fantastic build, which offers such a great opportunity to young people in our local area.”

Above left and right, steel frames form the bones of the building. Below right, quality groundworks provide the basis of every build. Below, the project nears completion.

‘IT IS ALWAYS A PLEASURE TO BE INVOLVED WITH LOCAL PROJECTS.’ surface water, causing minimal or no long-term detrimental impact on the surrounding area. Rainwater and runoff is collected by the system, slowed down or ‘attenuated’ by specialist tanks, and then gradually released. Managing the volume and flow rate of runoff water in this way reduces the risk of flooding, both on site and in the local area. The design also incorporated the use of porous asphalt. This permeable surface,

Concrete cannot be poured when the air temperature is lower than 5°C because low temperatures affect the way it cures, causing damage to the structure. The delay whilst waiting for suitable conditions caused the already-tight programme to become a cause for real concern, and the Freeman Contracting team put in long hours over the spring to make back the time stolen by the adverse weather.

The sports facilities are often utilised by visiting organisations, from international rugby teams to Pony Club championship competitors, and the boosted capacity helped to future-proof Sports Academy 2 against high volumes of visitors in years to come. Freeman Contracting completed their part in the construction in September 2018, and the Sports Academy 2 opened to students shortly afterwards, in time for the new academic year.

lifton Village is a beautiful Georgian enclave in the heights of Bristol that leaves behind the usual hubbub of city life. Its wealth of things to see, do and explore, coupled with being easily accessed from the Severn Bridge and M5 motorway, make it the ideal location for an afternoon, day or weekend trip away. When visiting this corner of the country, a stroll across the aweinspiring Clifton Suspension Bridge is a must-do. Designed by Britain’s 19th century visionary engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the architectural showpiece hovers 245ft above the water of the River Avon; it’s hard to imagine that until the 1930s, when the practice was outlawed, daredevil pilots regularly flew their planes between the gleaming water and the intricate iron lacing that supports the roadway above. From the Clifton tower side, take a short walk up the hill to Clifton Observatory, where you can travel the underground passage to Ghyston’s Cave look out and enjoy a spectacular view back to the bridge and Avon Gorge below. Watch out for the new 360° glass café, opening summer 2019, for year-round, weather-proof views of this stunning vista. There’s fun for all the family at Bristol Zoo Gardens. The grounds are home to red pandas, lemurs, meerkats, kangaroos, penguins, gorillas, lions and many more animals from across the globe. There is also an outdoor adventure playground, splash play area, aquarium and adventure ropes course. A registered charity, the zoo manages conservation projects that span five continents and runs educational classes on the animals and their habitats. If you’re looking for green space, try Ashton Court Estate. The country park and mansion are set within 850 acres of woodland and grassland and offer endless activities: deer parks, mountain biking, footgolf, a miniature railway, picnic areas, a golf course and a free 5k park run every Saturday, to name a few. The estate even provide designated areas to fly model aircraft, or practice capturing your next lot of drone footage. It’s also home to the pièce de résistance of the city’s annual event calendar; the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta in August is a weekend of riotous colour and creativity, with fireworks displays, trade stands and entertainment all on offer. It is well worth a visit.

Independent boutiques, vintage treasures, garden squares, galleries and tempting places to stop for a bite to eat make Clifton Village a delightful place to spend the afternoon. Maze and Maze at No.18 are two sophisticated stores, both located on The Mall. Shop discerning collections for both men and women under one roof at scandi-style Maze; and peruse Parisian fashion pieces and beautiful homeware products in No.18. For superlative interior and lifestyle inspiration, Papersmiths book and stationery shop presents an outstanding selection of design books and carefully curated items from designers and illustrators all over the world; you won’t be able to miss their impressive, vivid green, ‘living wall’ where owners Sidonie and Kyle have cultivated a huge, mossy space housing an assortment of succulents. If old-school is more to your taste, dive into Clifton Arcade for all things vintage; this unique Victorian shopping arcade houses some of the most unusual shopping in Bristol. Here you will find Hidden, a unique gallery selling hand-signed and original works by major 20th and 21st century artists to include Picasso, Warhol and show stopping work by Banksy. When you’re in need of a boost, follow your nose to what are undoubtedly some of Bristol’s best eateries. If it’s something sweet you’re after, Anna Cake Couture’s café and shop have got you covered. They take everything there is to love about a full-grown cake, and put it into a couple of delicious mouthfuls, meaning you can try as many as you like – I think we’ll start with the strawberry, chocolate and chilli cubicake! Owner Adam Denton opened up his very own butchers, Ruby & White, next door, providing farm to fork traceability. We’d recommend ordering their signature ribeye steak with green peppercorn sauce and dauphinoise potatoes.

With a spa, award-winning restaurant, outdoor heated pool, sauna, hot tub and steam room, this unique space invites you to take some ‘me’ time. ASK A LOCAL IAN TUSTIN WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING IN CLIFTON? I love that there’s a seemingly endless choice of great restaurants, pubs, bars and cafés around, all within a half mile radius of one another. Plus, there’s the greenery and fresh air of Clifton and Durdham Downs just a short walk to the north, with the livelier city centre and Harbourside areas roughly the same distance to the s outh. WHAT SHOULD ALL VISITORS TO THE AREA EXPERIENCE? Obvious answer I’m sure, but any first-time visitors should try and see Brunel’s famous Clifton Suspension Bridge. My personal favourite way to admire it, is with a beer in hand at the White Lion pub which has an outside deck with great views of the bridge overlooking the Avon Gorge and South Bristol. WHERE WOULD BE YOUR TOP TIP FOR A PLACE TO DINE? Clifton Sausage. As the name suggests, they specialise foremost in meals using locally produced, high quality sausages in loads of different varieties - but they serve various other classic British dishes as well. Very reasonably priced and generous portion sizes!

Watch the small team of skilled master butchers as they hand-cut and prepare meat, poultry and game on the butcher’s block. Foodies all, staff are eager to pass on their cooking tips and suggest complementary wines. The deli offers a range of artisan British cheeses, charcuterie and fresh bread, as well as wine and locally-grown vegetables. Glazed hams and joints of pork and beef are roasted daily, and sit alongside a range of homemade picnic treats. rubyandwhite.com

BUYING A HOUSE

R I G H T- S I Z E , DON’T COMPROMISE Rather than choosing to upsize or downsize their home, buyers across the country are increasingly seeking out properties that are just the ‘right’ size to suit their lifestyles.

T

he decision to sell a family home, or somewhere you have lived for a long period of time, is an emotional one that can induce all sorts of anxieties; but starting this new chapter of your life doesn’t have to be about compromise. There are a whole host of benefits to right-sizing into a new build home that can make moving house a liberating decision.

G E T H E L P S E L L I N G YO U R P R O P E R T Y

A frustration known too well to many who have previously bought a home is the breakdown of a property chain – it can often be a stressful and uncertain process. When buying a new build home, there is no need to wait for existing owners to move out, reducing the length of the house-buying chain and the potential hassle of having multiple parties involved. No purchase goes more smoothly than a F I N D YO U R R I G H T- S I Z E P R O P E R T Y chain-free one. When you buy new, you Right-sizing doesn’t necessarily mean may also have the option to part exchange you want less space. You may be looking your old property for your new home. It is for fewer bedrooms and a larger living by far the simplest way to move to a new area; perhaps a bigger kitchen, breakfast house, with the added bonus of no estate and family area, instead of a separate agent fees. For some, right-sizing might be an opportunity to release some equity from your current property, but that’s not the only financial incentive involved. Today’s new build homes conform to the latest environmental standards, with significantly smaller carbon footprints than older properties. Extensive insulation, quality double-glazing, the latest central heating and hot water systems, and brand-new, energy efficient kitchen appliances, all bode well for both the planet and your pocket. Research from the NHBC Foundation and Zero Carbon Hub has shown that living in a new build home could result in savings of around 55% on gas and electricity spend for a four-bedroom, detached property. New build homes offer increased safety and security. Building standards require new homes to adhere to strict regulations for electrical insulation and fire safety, with the installation of smoke alarms, fire doors and the use of fire-retardant materials. Modern locks, security alarms, lighting and even phone entry systems provide a highly secure home. Coupled with a low maintenance burden, this makes new homes ideal for a jet-setting lifestyle or lock-up-and-leave scenario. A N A B U N D A N C E O F STO R AG E

If right-sizing for a smaller property fills you with the dread of letting go of all your worldly possessions, you’re not alone in thinking this. It’s a common misconception that a new home won’t have enough space for all your existing stuff. But modern developers are wising up, and clever solutions and generous designs are now more common amongst savvier housebuilders. Freeman Homes offers an abundance of storage and space, a feature for which they are often praised by customers. Well-designed spaces allow for multiple furniture layout options; the

majority of properties have garages; fitted kitchens provide practical storage; and all bedrooms include ample built-in storage. It’s important to remember that downsizing doesn’t mean downgrading in terms of comfort, convenience, or quality. Check the specification of your chosen new home carefully, paying attention to details like the heating system, the quality of the appliances and the options available for flooring. Even if you’re not a social butterfly, it’s important that the area you move to has a community and atmosphere that you can enjoy. Whether that’s an active community hall timetable, a busy local pub or a leisure facility within an easy drive, make sure that the location you’re looking at is home to the kind of community that will fulfill your family’s social needs.

Healthcare facilities are important at any stage in life, but they are especially relevant as we age, or if you have children. Being able to register with both a good doctor’s surgery and dental practice close to home means it’s an easy hop in and out for appointments, and if you need emergency access you don’t have to worry about getting there quickly.

Proximity to local amenities is a major consideration, and no matter how good your vegetable patch is, grocery shopping is a necessity. Depending on your lifestyle, you might want to have other resources at hand as well, such as reputable restaurants, a good pub, weekend markets, and local boutiques.

Start by making a list of all the things you like to do, including those activities you want to be doing but can’t. Whether it’s tennis, golf, cycling, yoga, the gym or putting the lengths in at the local swimming pool, make sure you choose a location that has the right facilities and clubs for you and your family.

n the final stages of its quest towards the Atlantic Ocean, the River Severn winds across Gloucestershire, heading for the Bristol Channel. A few miles inland, it curves in a wide arc and runs past the semi-rural village of Newnham on Severn. Newnham is the location of the latest development by Freeman Homes, which is nestled at the edge of the village on a gently-rising stretch of land, providing glorious views out across the river and across the surrounding fields. It is ideally positioned for access to Gloucester and Cheltenham to the north and Bristol to the south, making it a great spot for commuters, and is within a few minutes’ drive of the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which are packed with activities for families, lovers of the outdoors and those seeking a quieter, more relaxed lifestyle. The development features a careful blend of traditional and contemporary designs, ranging in size from two to five bedrooms. The exterior finishes have been chosen to complement the aesthetic of the existing architecture in the area, and the interior of each property will be fitted out to the Freeman Homes signature specification, then finished to the highest standard. Part of the appeal of Severnbank is the thriving community aspect to life in Newnham. The village offers a host of amenities, which include a doctors’ surgery, a Post Office, an independent convenience store, a beautifullymaintained church, a children’s nursery, a primary school and an excellent butcher’s shop. As well as these facilities, Newnham hosts regular social events – look up the annual Newnham Live festival, which attracts some big-name international acts to perform in this quirky and intimate location – and clubs, which include a gardening society, film club, WI, cricket club, summer BBQs and more.

A HAPPY RESIDENT Linda purchased at Freeman Homes’ age-exclusive development The Chase Dales. Here’s what she had to say: “I liked the idea of living with other people about my own age because everything is so attractive, and it’s so secure. I’d looked at lots of properties, and I just didn’t want to move into a property where as soon as I got there, I’d have to do lots of alterations to suit me. I like my neighbours. We all seem to know that we don’t want to live in each other’s pockets, but we can always rely on having someone to come and help if we needed it. If any of my friends wanted to move, I would recommend that they come here.”

We asked Weston-under-Penyard resident Helen Morris what she loves about the village. My husband Chris and I moved here nearly six years ago with our two Golden Retrievers, Florence and Zebedee. I expected that moving away from a Georgian riverside home meant downsizing in house, garden and community spirit. In all respects, I have been pleasantly surprised by the reality. The village is perfectly placed for us. Our old stamping grounds, Gloucester and Cirencester, are within 40 minutes by car. And we can be in the centre of Ross-on-Wye in 5 minutes! It’s a delightful town and offers everything we need – diverse shops, healthcare, a community hospital, a library, a tennis club, sports, and eateries, all on our doorstep. Weston nestles under Penyard Woods and the benign gaze of St Lawrence’s Church, which, with the Village Hall, is a lively community hub. We have enjoyed a variety of interesting events: music and drama, food markets, plant swaps and fetes. The Weston Cross pub hosts a weekly gathering of locals called The Yacht Club, where we have made lasting good friends. Best of all, we have found the local community full of warmth and welcome. This is a wonderful new chapter for us, with no regrets!

I attended the primary school and am now in my last year at the high school. My experiences in the area have been delightful, and I have many fond memories with friends and family in Weobley. This village can open up so many opportunities for families, and the friendly community makes you feel settled in the lovely countryside of Herefordshire. The dentist and doctor’s surgery have always been useful. For families, there are beautiful walks around the local area and a village hall which hosts children’s activities including Brownies and Guides which I have previously been to and really enjoyed it. The village shop is more than useful which makes the village so much more practical for everyone. Moreover, there are a range of restaurants and pubs that offer the best service and they have amazing reviews, so I highly recommend visiting them. What really makes Weobley special is the black and white timber buildings. These really do make the village look stunning - your attention is drawn to the architecture and the scenic views of the countryside. I’d highly recommend you visit and let Weobley give you a lovely welcome.

and truffle; and lobster, celeriac, apple and kale. Housed in former derelict farm buildings which have now been entirely rejuvenated, the sandstone and red brick walls are adorned with treasures discovered on the land by a former ploughman. The interiors of the large,

open dining space were designed by Estate Manager Peta Darnley, to accentuate the natural light that floods into the building through former wagon-openings, and are deliberately understated to let the natural beauty shine. Pensons.co.uk

TALK OF THE TOWN With a collection of establishments that includes boutique hotels No. 131 and No. 38 The Park, as well as The Tavern restaurant, it’s not surprising that The Lucky Onion’s two latest additions have become the talk of Cheltenham town.

THE SECRET BOTTLE SHOP, HEREFORD Unless you were told about it, you wouldn’t necessarily know about, or even stumble upon The Secret Bottle Shop. This little independent gem is sandwiched between Printer and Tailor, and Mortimers Solicitors on Widemarsh Street, hidden behind an unassuming entrance – look out for the black and white A-board to point you in the right direction! Inside you will discover a rather boozy Aladdin’s cave; three rooms all lined from floor to ceiling with an excellent selection of wine, champagne and spirits. The shop presents a novel ‘Tasting Station’ where customers are welcomed to try before they buy. Whether you are looking for something to open after a long day’s work, a gift for someone special, or something to share on your wedding day, the friendly and knowledgeable team are on hand to give expert advice. Check out their Secret Tasting Events which are sometimes held in the shop around the table, hosted outside in the courtyard on beautiful sunny evenings, and in their own bar Saxtys, just two doors down. EXPLORE THE WORLD IN WINES

T

Travel the world of wine one country at a time at The Mill Race.

he Mill Race village pub boasts an award-winning wine list which alone makes it worthy of a visit. With an astounding eighty plus wines on the menu, representative of important wine regions from all around the world, you can explore wine one country at a time from the village of Walford, just outside Ross-on-Wye. So much choice can become baffling, so whilst every glass of wine tells a story, we’ve selected our ten favourites to tell their tale.

10 WINES MARLBOROUGH, NEW ZEALAND Lofthouse Sauvignon Blanc English couple Rod and Di Lofthouse moved to New Zealand and bought a vineyard when they had no winemaking experience whatsoever. Totally reliant on their neighbours’ help, they created a wine that became an icon. Marlborough is one of New Zealand’s sunniest and driest areas, and it has become synonymous with the sauvignon blanc grape. The Lofthouse vineyard sits next door to and quite literally within touching distance of Marlborough’s Cloudy Bay – the classic Kiwi sauvignon! Lofthouse is grassy, fresh and invigorating - ideal for summer drinking. LANGUEDOC-ROUSSILLON, FRANCE Domaine de Saissac Cabernet Sauvignon A small group of growers in the Haut-Minervois wine producing area joined forces as a micro co-operative to produce wines. Their vineyards – spanning 7,000 hectares - comprise some of the most interesting ‘terroirs’ of the whole Languedoc. Domaine de Saissac is a small wine estate on the banks of the historic Canal du Midi. This is a dark, red-black wine that’s balanced with delicate, cedar-spice notes.

TUSCANY, ITALY Chianti Classico Terre di Prenzano Halfway between Florence and Siena, the Vignamaggio estate lies in a beautiful, undulating setting, quintessentially Tuscan. The area is rich in history and intrigue; it is said that the Mona Lisa of Leonardo da Vinci’s celebrated portrait was born here. The grapes for their ‘Terre di Prenzano’ are grown in the very best part of the higher-quality Classico area. Enjoy dried herbs, spice, mocha and moreish sour cherry flavours. MONTEREY COUNTY, USA Carmel Road Pinot Noir Monterey County is in a bay on the coast of California, so it benefits from cooling breezes and evening fog that rolls in from the Pacific Ocean. These are the ideal growing conditions for the cool-climate varietals for which Monterey County is so well known. The concentrated, silky Carmel Road Pinot Noir shows classic leafy notes combined with dark cherries, ripe strawberries, white pepper and rose petals. RIBERA DEL DUERO, SPAIN Psi Bodega y Viñedos Alnardo Peter Sisseck aims to preserve old vine wine production in Ribera del Duero against huge pressure to replant for greater efficiency. Psi is a characterful Spanish Tempranillo born from a marriage of modern and traditional practices. Warm, supple, spiced and rounded, it is a delicious wine with remarkable aged vine intensity.

WYE VALLEY, ENGLAND Castle Brook Classic Cuvée Brut This sparkling English wine is produced by the Chinn family, best known for their Wye Valley Asparagus at Cobrey Farms. The grapes are grown on the steep south-facing slope at their Herefordshire farm. Castle Brook competes with the very best champagnes, having won multiple prestigious awards in the industry. A deliciously delicate, crisp palate with a hint of yellow blossom; brioche and earthy yeast notes add complexity to the finish.

PAARL, SOUTH AFRICA TELLS A STORY, WE’VE Nelson Estate Sauvignon Blanc SELECTED OUR TEN Talented young winemaker Lisha Nelson took over from her father on FAVOURITES TO TELL the family estate. She ensures that THEIR TALE’ the utmost care goes into producing every bottle of these awardwinning wines. Made from grapes grown on the seaward side of the Paarl Mountain, these wines benefit from an Atlantic Ocean influence, which lends great liveliness and freshness to the whole range. Herbaceous notes on the nose with hints of green pepper and yellow plums are lifted by a refreshing acidity. MENDOZA, ARGENTINA Bodega Ruca Malen Malbec Mendoza in Argentina has been blazing a trail with its Malbec for some time now, and many high-quality producers are becoming far more site specific. This Malbec is no exception, with fruit from the high-altitude vineyards of Uco and Cuyo. With vibrant, cherry-plum and spicy liquorice notes, and a vanilla and chocolate finish, this wine is rich, moreish and delicious. ADELAIDE HILLS, SOUTH AUSTRALIA The Lane Block 1A Chardonnay The Lane is a boutique winery, the brainchild of well-known Aussie winemaker John Edwards, whose dream was to marry together the very best of ‘old world’ structural refinement and ‘new world’ fruit exuberance. Block 1A is a bright lemoncoloured, elegant and fresh wine displaying tropical fruit and toasted notes on the nose. The label on each bottle details the GPS coordinates for individual vineyards.

The Bacchus Marathon and Half-Marathon are fast becoming must-do events on the UK running calendar – with a twist! This is running like you’ve never experienced it before. This laidback race sees entrants run through the stunning surroundings of Denbies Vineyards near Dorking and take breaks at drinks stations to sample fabulous English wines on the way. Most of the field turn out in fancy dress, and there are numerous bands playing around the course to bring the festival atmosphere. There’s more food and drink waiting for you at the finish line, with a post-race hog roast and a party that carries on long into the night. The event takes place on the 9th of September and participants can choose to take part in either the marathon, half-marathon or a 10km run/walk. This boozy affair is England’s answer to the Marathon du Médoc in France, where runners stop for a staggering 23 wine tastings, with oyster tasting and steak on offer at the 38th and 39th kilometre marks – maybe one for next year! run-bacchus.com

MOSEL, GERMANY Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett Winemaker Dr. Prüm is a superstar of the German wine scene. THE LYON INN, WESTBURY-ONSEVERN Award-winning newcomer The Lyon Inn is fast building a reputation for top-notch food in the Gloucestershire dining scene.

F

rom the welcoming and cosy bar to the wonderful restaurant, which is worthy of ‘foodie destination’ status, The Lyon Inn at Westburyon-Severn offers everything you could want from a great gastropub. You can sip a pint of British ale in a centuries-old public house, meet friends for fresh coffee and homemade cake, linger over a leisurely lunch, grab a burger and a pint, or indulge in a delectable three-course meal. Formerly The Red Lion, this 17th century inn has undergone an impressive refurbishment under new owners Sue and Chris Light, who have lovingly transformed the establishment and reinstated its earlier name. The husband-and-wife team are certainly no novices to hospitality, having owned and run a boutique hotel in Cheltenham’s Montpellier district, a five-star B&B in Blaisdon, and renovated a small miner’s cottage into beautiful holiday lets in the heart of the Forest of Dean. This latest project beautifully balances the old and the new. Farrow & Ball colours are used throughout, but the original beams remain exposed. The old bar has been extended, separating the large dining room and bar area, ensuring the ‘local pub’ feel is maintained. Restoration works even revealed a late 1600s inglenook fireplace, which now takes centre stage. Unsurprisingly, Chris and Sue are passionate about the provenance of produce. It’s the food on offer which really sets this place apart. Surrounded by small Gloucestershire artisan producers, Head Chef Dan Merriman creates menus that showcase the very best seasonal flavours and local suppliers. Meat comes from Martins Meats in Cheltenham or Huntsham Farm in Goodrich, salmon from the

neighbouring Severn & Wye Smokery, charcuterie from Trealy Farm in Monmouth, and vegetables and cut flowers are even picked from their own kitchen garden in Blaisdon. Some of the delights you may find featured on the menu include duck egg Scotch egg with prune ketchup; 60-day, dry-aged Longhorn steak with beef fat hollandaise, king oyster mushroom and triplecooked truffle chips; and popcorn and sea salt brulée, almond biscuit and blood orange granita. Sunday roasts are also a must-try, receiving regular rave reviews. In the Cotswold-style bar you will find a good selection of local hand-pulled ales, beers and ciders - including the ultra-local Severn cider - fine wines, and an ever-growing range of gins and whiskies. The pub benefits from a fenced garden in which to enjoy drinks on a beautiful summer’s day. In adverse weather, you can easily find a cosy corner to hunker down in. This year saw The Lyon win Restaurant of The Year in the Forest Business Awards and achieve finalist status in the New Business of The Year and Pub of the Year awards. Without a doubt, The Lyon is one to try – in fact, we’d bet that you won’t stick to just the one visit! thelyoninn.com

BALI: A SENSORY EXPERIENCE Home to golden beaches, turquoise waters, vivid green rice terraces, captivating jungles, volcanoes, temples and world-class accommodation, Emma Shotton takes us on a trail of discovery on the ‘Island of the Gods’.

T

his colourful Hindu island in the Indonesian archipelago is located just eight degrees south of the equator, enjoying a tropical, warm and humid climate all year around. On my recent trip to Bali, I went in search of sensory experiences and luxury hideaways that offer something a little bit different. Here’s what I discovered: A HIDDEN SANCTUARY IN UBUD In the spiritual hub of Ubud, experience the rituals of Balinese Hinduism, and enjoy art, dance, architecture and blissful rural surrounds. Just outside of town, we learned of a concealed sanctuary for tropical escapism called Stone House, a boutique B&B. Behind a limestone wall, among the green palms, is a space where steps are dusted with petals and the silence is punctured only by geckos, running water and the call of birds. We stayed in the Longhouse, a wooden villa that juts out into the jungle, built on seven-metre stilts. Three porches house an outdoor shower, swinging couch and oversized sofa to relax and take in the incredible views. Leisurely breakfasts are eaten on the open-sided lodge, and at sunset it becomes a place to sample gins by candlelight. Staying here was like being a guest in a private and exotic home, with an easy-going social aspect. There are numerous walks to enjoy in the area, with the Campuhan Ridge Walk and Mount Batur Sunrise Trek being two of my favourites. For the ultimate, holistic transformation immerse yourself in the notoriously dreamy surroundings of Fivelements. Nature takes centre stage at this riverside wellness retreat where flower baths, Balinese-inspired treatments, healing sessions, yoga and meditation, as well as plant-based cuisine, leave you feeling deeply rejuvenated.

SNORKELLING OFF THE COAST OF NUSA PENIDA Some of the best snorkelling in Bali is to be found around the three islands that make up Nusa Penida, reached in 45 minutes by boat from Sanur. We booked onto a day trip led by experienced snorkel guides to explore bays, beaches and caves. Beautiful corals were awash with colourful marine life in crystal clear waters, and we were lucky enough to have an unforgettable encounter with mesmerising giant Manta Rays. Stay a couple of nights on Nusa Penida to visit the stunning Diamond Beach, Instagram-famous Kelingking view point, and the hypnotic waters of the Blue Lagoon on Nusa Ceningan. FIVE-STAR LUXURY IN THE CANGGU JUNGLE Escape inland to Villa Sungai, a pair of chic private residences on a jungle-covered hillside in the rural village of Cepaka. The narrow roads of the village are sandwiched between sprawling green rice fields, colourful temples, and the burnt orange of triangular rooftops. Witness the Balinese way of life as children, families, and local animals go about their daily routines in the neighbourhood.

TOP TRAVEL TIPS Above, tropical sanctuary Stone House. Below, Blue Lagoon on Nusa Ceningan.

BEST TIME TO VISIT The dry season runs from May to October but it can get busy during this time. In the wet season the average temperature is 31 degrees and the air is steamier, with skies often overcast. But even at the height of its wet season Bali is still a fantastic holiday destination.

WHERE WE STAYED Stone House: From £170 per night. stonehousebali.com Villa Sungai, From £353 per night. bali-villasungai.com Mulia Resort & Villas: From £150 per night. themulia.com BE SEA SAVVY Bali’s stunning seascapes can be deceptive. Beneath the still surface, be wary of powerful currents, strong waves and exposed rocks. Stick to swimming in popular areas; if you’re looking to go a bit further off shore, book in with one of the ethical dive and snorkelling companies, which don’t disturb sea life and are respectful of the reef’s inhabitants. Check TripAdvisor reviews if you aren’t sure!

Located only 20 minutes from Canggu Beach, these secluded villas are an oasis of calm, offering a sumptuous blend of luxury and authentic Balinese village life. Each villa features open-air living areas, canopy beds, and terraces with sun-loungers made for entire days of novel-reading, while the surrounding infinity pool calls for a dip. Sink into luxurious, fluffy king-sized beds, draped with mosquito netting in all-white rooms decorated with oversized mirrors and ornate furniture. The food here is also sublime, with a private chef creating an indulgent menu. The Bebek betutu (slow roasted, leaf-wrapped duck) served with crispy fried peanuts, urap sayur (vegetable salad with coconut) and sambal is one to write home about. SUPER-CHILLED ULUWATU Located atop the limestone cliffs of the Bukit Peninsula, this rocky outcrop is still largely ignored by the crowds you find elsewhere on the island. Despite its world-class surfing status,

there’s a comforting sense of isolation here, where you’ll find beaches that you thought only existed on postcards. Head to Bingin Beach to catch a wave, go for a snorkel, or just hang out in one of the warungs with a fresh coconut; visit the Uluwatu temple to watch one of Bali’s most iconic art performances, the Kecak fire dance; and grab a spot on the balcony at the very trendy Single Fin a couple of hours before sunset. We watched seasoned surfers ride the prestigious waves and sipped cucumber flings whilst the sun sank into the Indian Ocean and the Sunday acoustic session got underway.

AN EXCLUSIVE STAY IN NUSA DUA Larger hotel resorts didn’t sit naturally in my mind when thinking of Bali, but with some of the most coveted international travel awards under their belt, The Mulia Resort & Villas clearly had something quite special to offer. Set amidst extensive tropic gardens, directly on the pristine white sands of Nusa Dua Beach in Bali’s stunning south-east corner, they’ve successfully married sprawling luxury with Balinese nature. On entering our room, the lavish surroundings, oversized marble bathroom and spacious balcony with a view of the Indian Ocean gave an air of pure exclusivity. The sheer scale and extravagance of everything here has been designed to impress. After a dip in one of the oceanfront pools, lazing on cabanas and fully indulging in a Balinese massage at the Mulia Spa - which also houses a Finnish sauna, meditative steam room, hydrotherapy pools, and ice room - I’m fully converted.

loat in the Forest is a brand-new wellness centre set in the lush Forest of Dean, offering a new way to unplug, relax and explore the mind. Flotation - often referred to as ‘floating’ - is a relaxation therapy that allows you to float effortlessly on the surface of water saturated with Epsom salt, which creates a buoyant environment. It helps regulate the activity of more than 325 enzymes and performs a vital role in orchestrating many bodily functions, from muscle control and electrical impulses to energy production and the elimination of harmful toxins. Additionally, it helps reduce blood pressure and improve circulation. Worryingly, magnesium levels have dropped by half in the last century due to changes in agriculture and diet, making a soak in this mineral-rich solution seem like a pretty smart move to us. PAIN RELIEF Released from the effects of gravity, your muscles, joints and bones are given time to rest and recover from everyday wear and tear. A TRANQUILITY POD

ENHANCED PERFORMANCE Get back to doing what you love sooner by using flotation to boost your sports recovery. The free-from-gravity benefits combined with those of that magical magnesium can reduce inflammation, aid the breakdown of lactic acid, and help your body recover more effectively to keep you on top of your game. SLEEP BETTER A single session in a float pod can be an excellent way to remedy any rest issues. Our bodies and minds can’t function without sufficient sleep, which can in turn have wide-ranging implications on all areas of our life. The collective benefits of floating can bring you to the ideal state for a good night’s sleep. Not only can a single session feel as restorative as a full night’s sleep, it can also improve sleep patterns, offer relief from insomnia and the ability to ‘reset’ jet lag. Emerge feeling fully refreshed.

FOR EXPECTANT MOTHERS With its sense of weightlessness and relief on achy joints and muscles, floating while pregnant can be a tremendous source of relief for expectant mothers. Stress relief and good sleep are paramount to both mother and baby’s wellbeing. Relax, practice breathing techniques and build a stronger connection together in a peaceful and supportive environment. While most doctors have no concern with pregnant women floating during the second and third trimesters, we recommend you check with your GP before your first float. MEDITATION Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned pro, having trouble meditating can make you feel impatient and irritated. Float pods are conducive to meditation, as the still and silent environment helps your brain arrive at a theta-wave brainwave state. This induces pleasant, dream-like consciousness and allows you to drop into your meditation practice more easily. CREATIVITY UNLEASHED The quietening of your frenzied thoughts can actually induce a hyper-suggestible mind – a great tool for enhanced creativity and super-learning. With no distractions, the mind is able to absorb new information more easily, improve recall and heighten memory. Creativity thrives when you are deeply relaxed yet highly focussed. Fancy a float? And relax. Having stepped into the spacious, shiny, futuristic-looking contraption, I sink down into the water brimming with Epsom salts. The water is warm and silky, and I spend a few minutes familiarising myself with the space before pulling down the lid and switching off the lights, immersing myself into pitch darkness and complete and utter silence. My head is completely supported by the buoyant water. Each time I push my foot, leg or arm downwards, it bobs straight back up. I am weightless, unsure where my body ends and the water starts, helped by the fact the water is heated to 35 degrees – skin temperature. This feeling is akin to practicing transcendental meditation, but without the effort of concentrating on a mantra to force my mind to surrender. Here, the water is doing the work, cradling my body, allowing my whole self to relax and do absolutely nothing. My mind is still. The earlier anxious thoughts of spending an hour floating in silence, unable to deal with my overflowing inbox or return the five missed calls from earlier, have dissipated and I feel intensely calm and peaceful. For people like me on the go, rushing through life at a hundred miles an hour, flotation provides a pod of tranquillity that forces your mind and body to unwind, relax and just be. It’s quite an incredible experience, and not hard to understand why Shari and Will left their jobs in the city to set up Float in the Forest, to provide a haven of tranquillity for people to escape the pandemonium of modern-day life and find inner peace.

fter the winter months of dark days and cold, wet soil, I had been looking forward to getting out into the garden again. The seeds were all purchased ready for planting and the greenhouse had been cleaned, ready for the early salads and tender plants. The winter and autumn digging was ready for working down and the prospect of tasty new potatoes didn’t seem so far away. But flicking through my usual sources of inspiration, it seemed that nearly everywhere there were articles proclaiming the dangers to be encountered in the garden! It started to seem that the only way to stay safe was to concrete over the garden or wear full protection. Then I found an article which said gardening was good for depression, high blood pressure, general fitness and well-being – thank goodness! Of course there are risks in the garden, just as there are everywhere else in life. Armed with a bit of knowledge and some common sense, they are easy to avoid.

Top of the dangerous substances reported seems to be compost. Dust from compost contains spores, which can be a particular risk to those with weak or damaged lungs. Store your compost bags outside and keep the compost moist to minimise dust. If it does dry out, water before using and don’t open in an enclosed space. Legionnaire’s disease can be present in stagnant water. When turning on your hose after a period of low use, run it for a while before you spray. Tanks and butts should be emptied and scrubbed out once a year. The fashion for adding flowers to salads has caused concerns, so check before use! While I don’t know any gardeners who snack on foxgloves, rhododendron leaves or even hyacinth bulbs, I can confirm that pea shoots, bean tops, radish, garlic and onions make a better – and safer – nibble. Then we come to tools. Everyone knows what happens to your toes if you use a fork while wearing flip-flops! Appropriate footwear is a must. Standing on uneven steps while reaching is inviting an accident to happen, even if you have been doing it for years. Clippers, mowers and strimmers can be quite noisy, so a sensible option is to wear ear protection; you wouldn’t want to miss the pleasure of birdsong, even if it is just the pigeons calling “come and eat these lovely cabbages”. Always use electrical tools with a circuit breaker, just in case. I am pleased to see most insects in my garden, and of course we are warned about bites and stings. Although not life threatening in themselves, bites, cuts and scratches can allow tetanus bacteria that live in soil to enter the bloodstream, so it is sensible to keep even small wounds covered and tetanus boosters up to date. I have a rule to try to be as organic as possible, which helps to avoid the hazards of pesticides and fungicides. If you do have to use them, do so carefully and only store in the original container. Now you have eliminated all these dangers, we move onto the really high risk factors! Snails and slugs top the list. The little monsters come out at night to feast on your best plants. There are so many ways to try and combat them, but the 100% solution is yet to be found. Copper tape around your pots or standing the pots on metal dishes can work, as can barriers of sharp sand, crushed egg shells or anything gritty around plants. The old ‘drowning in beer’ never works for me – I think their tastes are different to mine! Organic slug pellets are available, which are safe for birds. Unfortunately, the most effective way to get their numbers down is best for hunter-gatherer types and little boys. You will need a bucket with a lid to prevent the big escape, and if you

can’t face the prospect of handling the slimy munchers, a pair of disposable gloves and a torch. Choose a damp evening and your prey will be all over the garden. Choose your weapon – trowel, old tongs, a yuck-loving little boy – and fill your bucket. Now disposal awaits. Throwing them over the fence is not neighbourly, and re-wilding them in the countryside can be effort. Hens however will be quite excited, and gobble them straight up! The danger of veg all being ready at once can be minimised by careful planning. Sow salads little and often. Plant lettuce and spring greens quite close together, using every other one before

they mature, leaving room for the rest to grow bigger. Pick runner beans every other day to keep them producing. Freeze or make preserves with all produce before it gets old. Friendships can be made by giving neighbours excess vegetables! Avoid a flowerbed with no flowers by dead-heading several times a week. The conclusion is that there are dangers in the garden, but by using shed loads of common sense and egg cups of chemicals, you can minimise the risks. Be sensible, be safe, keep fit and keep gardening!
