For her 2021 solo exhibition, BE/LONGING, oil painter Aimee Erickson debuts a new series of paintings titled “Earth and Sky,” featuring low horizon lines and spacious skies in cool hues. The abstracted landscapes speak to nature’s transitions - from dusk to dawn or from one season to the next - while also symbolizing an array of human emotion. The concept of BE/LONGING relates to the complex state of being in which we seek to be present in the moment, while constantly yearning for a certain way of life in the past or future. Collectively, the series calls for a return to nature where we feel a supreme sense of belonging. Here, we can experience peace and stillness in an otherwise chaotic world.

She says of the series: “These paintings came after a period of not painting for well over a year. Before, my paintings were one-offs; the process included a specific subject matter, the painting, and myself. The “Earth and Sky” paintings came as a group and emerged from memory and imagination.”

Erickson strays further from realism with this body of work as she continues to explore perception and ways of seeing through her art. Her unique handling of oil paint has a watercolor-like effect, with broad washes of color that create soft yet expansive landscapes. Erickson says in her artist statement that “color has emotional weight and is related to the shape of space,” which clearly holds true in her latest work.

Aimee Erickson was born in Paris, raised in California, and currently lives and works in Portland, Oregon. She started oil painting at age eight and ultimately earned a BFA in Visual Communication Design/Illustration. She has received many accolades for her work including Best of Show and Artist’s Choice Award at Plein Air Easton in 2019, as well as Best of Show at Laguna, Olmsted, Carmel, Sonoma, and Pacific Northwest Plein Air. She was a finalist at the Portrait Society of America, of which she is a signature member. She has received multiple awards from Oil Painters of America, and won Best of Show at an American Women Artists national show. In 1997 she painted the official gubernatorial portrait of Oregon Governor Barbara Roberts. She has also travelled to China and Russia to paint and is an inaugural member of En Train Air.
