For many businesses, October represents the final stretch of the year, but also in the case of health issues it is breast cancer awareness month, which without a doubt should be a topic to discuss all year round and about which I want to share an important reflection.
In the battle against breast cancer, science and technology have played a monumental role in offering hope and dignity to survivors. A mastectomy, while often vital in fighting cancer, can profoundly affect a woman’s self-esteem and confidence. However, at the heart of this dilemma, medical devices, especially breast implants, have emerged as silent heroes, offering patients the opportunity to restore not only their bodies, but their lives as well.
The array of information, innovations, and dissemination available regarding breast reconstruction have transformed the experience for women who are facing a mastectomy. Modern breast implants are not just aesthetic pieces; they symbolize hope, strength, and resistance. They allow patients to recover a fundamental part of their identity, helping them overcome the physical and emotional scars that breast cancer leaves behind.

Innovations in this field have been amazing. Breast implants have evolved significantly in terms of shape, texture, and safety. New technologies have allowed for greater customization that fit the individual needs and desires of each patient. Additionally, surgical techniques have improved, and today they offer more natural results and a faster recovery.
However, despite these developments, it is essential to address the challenges women face when they embark on their journey toward breast reconstruction. Accessibility to these procedures and devices remains an issue in many parts of the world, and it is essential to work to ensure that all women, regardless of their background or economic status, have access to breast reconstruction options.
To face these challenges, the Technical Council for Breast Reconstruction (COTREMA) has worked in recent years with different stakeholders to promote initiatives aimed at breast reconstruction. These initiatives are conceived not only as cosmetic interventions, but also as a fundamental right for female breast cancer survivors aimed at achieving full recovery throughout the entire year.
Developments to address this disease include the update of the Technical Protocol for Care of Malignant Breast Tumor (PTATMM) in May 2023. This protocol allows patients to exercise their right of access to reconstruction in the public health system. This is the tool that contains all the information that provides a comprehensive treatment and addresses emotional, physical, and sexual elements, which can be treated by the patient’s doctor.
Women should be informed about all the available options they have as well as receive adequate support to make informed decisions about their body and health. Health professionals, nonprofit organizations and society have the responsibility to communicate valuable information, while

eliminating stigmas associated with breast reconstruction. Today in Mexico, there are more than 99,000 women with breast cancer and 35,000 require a mastectomy. Nevertheless, only 12,000 decide to have reconstruction, either due to lack of resources or information.
This is about restoring hope, confidence, and joy to a woman’s life, especially those who have gone through one of life’s most difficult trials. It is a testament to the power of science and human compassion that work together to heal not only the body, but also the soul. In this journey of reconstruction, we find not only physical restoration, but also the rebirth of the human spirit, proving that strength and beauty are infinite, even beyond the scars.
Innovation in Medical Devices: Giant Leaps Transforming Health

At the crossroads of science and technology, medical device innovation is playing a fundamental role in the healthcare industry. Today, scientists, engineers, and doctors collaborate to create devices that not only save lives, but also improve people’s quality of life. This synergy between medicine and technology represents significant progress and the promise of a healthier and prosperous future.
One of the most exciting aspects of this innovation is its ability to make healthcare more personalized and accessible. Modern medical devices are equipped with cutting-edge technology. These include sensors, artificial intelligence, and cloud connectivity, allowing doctors to monitor patients remotely and in real time. This feature does not only facilitate faster and more accurate diagnosis, but also helps patients manage their health conditions more effectively, without having to spend long hours in hospitals or clinics.
Moreover, innovation in medical devices is making healthcare more accessible, especially in remote or disadvantaged areas. For instance, wearable devices and mobile apps allow people to monitor their health and obtain basic medical guidance from the comfort of their homes. These innovations not only save time and money but can also be the difference between life and death, especially in critical situations where access to immediate medical care is limited.
However, these initiatives face many challenges. For example, data security and privacy, as well as the need for effective regulations to ensure the quality and effectiveness of these devices, are critical concerns that must be addressed. Additionally, there is a need to ensure that these technologies are available and affordable to all communities, regardless of their socioeconomic status.
Despite these challenges, medical device innovation remains a beacon of hope for the international health sector. By combining medicine with technology, we are making progress that is usually only seen in science fiction. These devices are not only changing the way healthcare is administered, but they are also empowering people to take control of their health in a unique way.
Ultimately, medical device innovation is about transforming lives and delivering a healthier, brighter future for everyone. We are on the threshold of a new era in healthcare, where science and technology come together to create a world where treatment is personalized and accessible, bringing hope for all.
Social Impact: Transformative for Businesses and Communities

In an increasingly interconnected world, companies have a responsibility to contribute to the well-being of the communities in which they operate. Social impact has become a fundamental pillar for companies, and its importance transcends any business, because their objective is to embrace the very heart of the societies they help to forge.
Social impact plays a crucial role in supporting communities when natural disasters strike. Companies that have resource and logistical capacity play a vital role when responding effectively to these emergencies. Whether it is providing medical supplies, food, clean water, or shelter, your contribution makes the difference between chaos and hope in affected communities. This immediate action not only alleviates those affected, but also establishes a bond of trust and gratitude between companies and people.
Medical education plays a vital role when disasters occur. The education and training of medical healthcare professionals, such as midwives and nurses, are essential for improving healthcare standards, especially in rural or remote areas. Companies can collaborate with educational and health organizations to fund educational training programs, provide materials and technology, and empower people with knowledge and skills. This type of investment not only raises the quality of healthcare, but also strengthens communities by providing employment opportunities and encouraging selfsufficiency.
Corporate volunteering is another powerful tool. For instance, when employees actively engage in volunteer activities, they are contributing to the community and strengthening their sense of purpose and connection. These experiences benefit organizations and those affected by natural disasters, and they contribute to the company’s internal culture, fostering collaboration and compassion among employees.
People-centered care is perhaps the most important element of social impact. When companies take into consideration the needs and wants of the people they employ, these enterprises can then tailor their initiatives to address specific problems and provide meaningful solutions. By listening to the community, understanding its challenges, and working together to find sustainable solutions not only improves people’s quality of life, but also builds strong, long-lasting relationships between businesses and communities.
Social impact is a moral responsibility. When businesses and communities collaborate and show mutual respect, the result is a world where everyone can grow and prosper together. In the journey toward a better future, social impact becomes the guiding light on the path toward a more compassionate and equitable world filled with opportunities for all.
