Coming home

Home means di erent things to di erent people. For instance, some refer to their place of origin, their residential area or even their country as ‘home’.

For others, such as younger generations, it may be where they grew up or where they are

currently residing. Regardless, the word home evokes unique memories and visions in everyone, and most of us strive to make our residences comfortable, indicative of our character, and an appropriate setting for our bits and pieces.

I’m a bit of a gypsy, so for me home is where the heart is, and it’s all about the people, not the possessions. That said, I still like a few creature comforts and enjoy getting and trying new ideas and products.

For inspiration I, and others, look to magazines, websites, retail outlets and events such as the TSB Canterbury Home Show, on from 14-16 October at the Christchurch Arena. See pages 69 to 82.

The South Island’s longest running event of its kind, the show connects 150+ quality home building and renovating businesses with over 12,000+ motivated homeowners looking for products, inspiration, ideas and expert advice to complete all manner of home improvement projects.

In the lead up to October’s Breast Cancer Awareness campaign, Lynda Papesch catches up with iconic Kiwi netballer, coach, motivator and cancer survivor Marg Foster about moving forward.

IN THE ive PRESENT

L

Meeting Marg Foster (MNZM ) is inspirational, even more so when you hear her story and what she does now.

These days the former Silver Ferns player lives in the present, embracing each day as it comes, and that is her advice to others, especially those with the spectre of breast cancer hovering over them.

Marg knows all about that from personal experience, and has been the New Zealand Breast Cancer ambassador, helping and inspiring others going through what she went through.

Flash back to 2006, when she dreamt that she had breast cancer and visited her local doctor who sent her for a mammogram.

The dream proved a reality.

“They found I had stage three breast cancer,” she recalls.

“It was devastating at the time, it was show weekend in the city, and I was beside myself thinking I was going to die.

“Lesson: trust your gut feeling, if you are feeling something isn’t right then go and have it checked out.

“My dream was my saviour.”

Family and friends rallied around her. “They were my biggest support. My husband Anthony was amazing. His mum had su ered breast cancer when he was younger (aged nine), and was told she had six months to live. She lived into her 70s.

“I had the best oncologist (Bernie Fitzharris), the medical day unit at Christchurch public hospital (especially Nurse Cara) has been incredible, and the Cancer Society was awesome with its support,” she says.

Marg still has the cancer drug Herceptin every three weeks, and is now in her 15th year of treatment.

“Lesson: receive with gratitude. Family is everything. At the end of the day, they

will be the ones around your deathbed.

“Have no regrets, and let go of things quicker to live each day in the moment.”

Her advice is to always live in the present. “This can be hard to do at times, but embrace each day.

“Have gratitude daily. Smile more, don’t hold grudges, have no regrets.

“Get on with living, and live your beautiful life to the best you can,” she says. “Get out and travel, it’s so good for the soul.

“Be the brilliant ‘you’ of how and what you want to be.

“When life presents a hurdle, just find a way to get over it. Jump, crawl under, do whatever it takes.”

It’s sound advice from a staunch survivor, who now spends much of her time helping others.

BE BREAST AWARE

• Early detection is the best way to beat breast cancer. Small, confined tumours are easier to treat.

• Know your normal – get to know the normal look and feel of your breasts.

• Check your breasts regularly. If you notice any unusual changes, get them checked out by your doctor straight away.

• If you’re 45-69, go for your free mammograms provided by BreastScreen Aotearoa every two years.

• BCFNZ recommends you consider a yearly mammogram between the ages of 40 and 49.

BREAST CANCER FACTS & FIGURES

Breast cancer is the most common cancer for Kiwi women and the third most common cancer overall.

More than 3500 women (nine each day) across the country are diagnosed annually.

The owner of Motivationz, coaching and mentoring youth, Marg loves coaching netball around the world and helping all ages. She is the current Silver Ferns specialist coach, and is the assistant coach to the NZ Men’s team.

Marg is also inspiring other women. In 2018 she joined forces with Christine Korako to create Inspiring Me Now, a forum for women to network and build relationships with other women who share the same desire for growth, leadership, and betterment.

Her personal mantra is twofold: “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, live in the present,” she says. And the final lesson from this much lauded Kiwi: “Love what you do, do what you love.”

Every year in NZ, 25 men are also diagnosed.

More than 650 Kiwi women die annually.

It is the leading cause of death for NZ women under 65.

The 10-year survival rate if breast cancer is detected by mammogram is 95 percent.

The survival rate if a woman finds a lump is 85 percent.

“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, live in the present.”

Entrepreneurial, entertaining and engaging all describe Kevin Carlin. So does survivor, a powerful descriptive that sums up his traumatic start in life, and a few other ups and downs along the way.

The man behind New Zealand’s first six-star boutique hotel, The Carlin, a $30 million-plus project in Queenstown, Kevin lives in a penthouse atop the hotel. It’s a far cry from the park bench and tent he occupied after fleeing his abusive family home in California, aged 17.

Slim and soft-spoken, he remembers his childhood as tough, physically and emotionally both at home and at school.

“I was small, and shy, and musical so school wasn’t too good,” he explains.

“At home, I didn’t get compliments as a child. I got beat — physically beat with a whip — and put down.”

His upbringing and subsequent journey helped to shape Kevin, make him strong and a survivor, he says.

A cold metal park bench was his first home-away-from-home, until o ered a tent by a friend’s parents.

He spent nine months living in that tent, accepting a government grant to attend chef school, and then “upgrading” to a caravan. Determination and dedication paid o and by the time he was 23, Kevin had amassed a $13,000 stake, with which he convinced several investors to help him build a 200-seat restaurant.

Cooking played a major role in starting to build his self-esteem. “Someone came up to me and said my cooking was good.

That was my first praise. It was a new emotion, and, as a result, I went to chef school.”

Word of his culinary abilities at the restaurant spread, and eventually Kevin received a call from a friend telling him that the band Van Halen had just fired its chef, and needed a new one.

Within a few hours, he’d impressed the band so much that they referred him to others, including Sting and The Police, Ozzy Osbourne, the late Olivia NewtonJohn, and John Travolta.

“I just never give up, and I strive to carry on with a nice lifestyle, and not go back to the tent.”

Kevin readily admits to enjoying the finer things in life. “I’ve always wanted nice things. My first car cost $200, and I lived in the back seat. Now I have a Maserati, a Bentley and a Porsche.

“I am an introvert, so I don’t do parties well,” he confesses.

What he does do well, aside from business, is music.

Kevin is a concert pianist, and a composer, who also plays guitar, drums, Irish whistles and saxophone, and inherited his musical talent from his late father.

In 2003, he composed 14 orchestral pieces, performed by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, for an album, The Princess of Wales — a musical and pictorial memoir, which reached number 23 on the New Zealand music charts.

Selling his share of the restaurant, he started Carlin Catering, spending seven years touring with artists and celebrities, before seguing into Carlin Manufacturing, a company building mobile kitchens.

A decade later he sold that company also, and retired – in his 30s – to Queenstown.

THE NEXT CHAPTER

Retirement didn’t last long. Property development became his new lifestyle, initially in Queenstown, then Christchurch and on Australia’s Gold Coast, although business wasn’t always smooth sailing.

“I’ve gone up and down two or three times, never bankrupt, but I’ve gone from millions of cash in the bank to tight times more than once.

The then Prince Charles (now King Charles III) met him at St James Palace, and accepted the album for release.

“Music was a chapter in my life, and I still enjoy playing. I see property development and music as equally creative,” he says.

HIS ADVICE TO OTHERS LOOKING TO SUCCEED

“Success is defined di erently by di erent people.

“For some it might be a yacht, others to have six homes on the planet.

“I know if you are creative and motivated, you can progress from a park bench.

“Pursue your dream and deliver a high standard. That’s what I have strived for and become known for.

“Don’t settle for less.” developer Carlin talks to Papesch about life, and looking for new frontiers.
“I just never give up, and I strive to carry on with a nice lifestyle, and not go back to the tent.” on 5.30, Sat 9 friendly,

Addington will o er a range of options during the week, including Australasia’s biggest harness racing day, IRT NZ Trotting Cup Day on Tuesday 8 November. The return of the IRT New Zealand Trotting Cup to its former glory has the people behind New Zealand’s greatest race buzzing.

Thompson anticipates that over 20,000 people could flood into the venue to witness the 119th running of the cup.

“Many hospitality packages have already sold out and general admission and other tickets went on sale from September 1,” says Thompson.

IRT New Zealand Trotting Cup kicks o a massive week at Addington with the NZ Free-For-Alls for pacers and the Renwick Farm Dominion Trot on Friday, 11 November, promising to be a truly great day out for everyone and a fantastic way to celebrate Canterbury’s Anniversary Day.

NOW cycling skin

The latest trend in skincare may actually be one worth trying.

Skin cycling is skin expert Dr. Whitney Bowe’s method of keeping over-exfoliation from damaging the skin and promoting skin recovery. Too much of a good thing can be harmful, and the same goes for active, powerful ingredients on your skin.

Using too many harsh products such as chemical exfoliants and retinol can weaken the skin over time, making the skin more prone to irritation. “You can use a nourishing moisturiser twice a day, but when you try to push the workhorses (the acids, the retinoids) you can actually do more harm than good — including damaging the skin barrier, experiencing low-grade chronic inflammation, increasing free radical damage, accelerating the aging process and worsening hyperpigmentation,” says Bowe.

SO HOW DOES SKIN CYCLING ACTUALLY WORK?

NIGHT ONE Night one is exfoliation night, specifically a chemical exfoliator. This helps dissolve pore-clogging debris and dead skin cells.

NIGHT TWO Night two is for retinoids. Retinoids are e ective at increasing cell turnover in the skin, increasing collagen production, fading age spots, and treating acne.

NIGHT THREE AND FOUR Night three and four are recovery nights. Focus on nourishing and repairing your skin barrier, using hydrating and moisturising products including peptides and hyaluronic acid.

Fortunately, recent advancements in the cosmetic industry have seen an increase in high-performance nonsurgical treatments that can provide great results with lower risks, less downtime, and a more accessible price than the more invasive surgical alternatives.

Ultherapy is the only FDA-approved treatment for non-surgical lifting and tightening of the face, neck, and brow. It is an in-clinic treatment that uses ultrasound technology to stimulate collagen.

Ultherapy is the gold standard in skin tightening and helps to restore the skin’s firmness as well as lifting and tightening for a smoother and

healthier-looking complexion. Only one treatment is required - one and done. The eye area is often one of the first places to show early signs of ageing with fine lines, crépey skin texture, and under-eye bags. Ulthera is one of our favourite machines to treat this area.

By using micro-focused ultrasound to deliver energy into the tissues below the skin, Ultherapy causes the tissue to tighten leaving the area around the eyes looking smoother and tighter, lifting the brow and reducing under eye bags.

Ultherapy is only available at the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic in Christchurch.

But for them we couldn’t stand, walk, run or dance, yet all too often, they don’t receive the attention they deserve.

Feet First Podiatry have given feet the utmost attention for 27 years, and its recent move to new premises, right next door to sister company, The Shoe Room, means it’s able to do so much more.

“With the added space of three clinic rooms, we can bring in more podiatrists, plus another foot-health practitioner,” says Director and Senior Podiatrist Charlotte Russell.

The additional space also enables more services to be o ered, such as Shockwave Therapy, an e ective treatment for those su ering from chronic plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis.

Cosmetic surgeries, such as nail bracing and nail reconstruction, returns confidence to those with toenail damage, so going

Beauty, body & hair tips

Looking for your new favourite product, treatment, hairstyle or workout but not sure where to start?

Here are a few inside tips and tricks from local beauty, body and hair experts.

DISCOVER THE DOUBLE PEEL

This is the skincare treatment you need to know about. A double peel is a resurfacing facial treatment that exfoliates the top layer of skin to reveal brighter and revitalised skin. The strength of each peel can be tailored to match your areas of concern and your expectation of results. In just six weeks, with a course of power “double” peels, your skin is refreshed and rejuvenated.

READY TO GO BLONDE FOR SUMMER?

If you are thinking of going blonde, a little care and prep work will go a long way. After all, hair can become damaged for many reasons - bleaching and highlighting hair colour services can all negatively impact hair, which doesn’t help when we want to colour it. At Surreal, we use and recommend Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate. This is an all-in-one system that provides the ultimate in repair, intense conditioning, and colour fade protection for all hair types and textures. It works wonders in preparing your hair before going blonde, and helps us get the best result possible for you.

One stop clinic

New Zealand is loved for its long sunshine hours and outdoor lifestyle; however, it also has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world.

It is important to wear sunscreen daily and to have your skin checked by an expert in skin cancer regularly.

The clinic at Mohs and Skin Cancer Specialist, o ers a one stop clinic for skin cancer care. They provide doctor led full skin checks with digital mole mapping using the latest technology, Fotofinder.

If a pre-cancerous lesion or invasive cancer is detected, then the doctor will prescribe treatment or book directly for surgical excision as required. The patients appreciate getting real time advice from the examining doctor and having all the management taken care of for them.

The team of doctors and nurses look after everything, from your first consultation to post-surgery and recovery.

The world-leading Fotofinder Medicam technology gives crystal clear imaging

(up to 200 times magnification) and highly accurate digital mole mapping.

Dermatologist Mairi-Clare says that FotoFinder is the clinic’s big point of di erence. “The clarity of the images is outstanding. We can use this tool to monitor lesions for change.”

“We can re-image the same lesion at di erent time intervals, and the technology will detect any minute changes in the lesions before they are visible to the human eye.”

This skin cancer clinic is expert in Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS), the gold standard for treating two of the most common types of skin cancer - basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas.

MMS has the highest cure rate as well as the lowest rate of recurrence. The Mohs technique results in the tumour to be cleared with the smallest possible defect, allowing for an optimum cosmetic result.

NEW CLINICIANS

With a recent move to spacious new premises in Papanui, Mohs and Skin Cancer Specialist is delighted to welcome two new clinicians to the team.

Dr. Cristina Mello is a medical dermatologist with a special interest in hand and nail disorders. Christina joins the clinic in a full-time capacity to oversee all aspects of medical dermatology.

Experts looked at data from 131,000 women and found “strong evidence” that staying physically active reduced the chance of developing the disease.

ExerciseNZ chief executive Richard Beddie says the study outcome is yet another piece of evidence that exercise is the wonder drug.

“Breast cancer is New Zealand’s third most common cancer and accounts for more than 600 deaths every year, according to the Ministry of Health.

“Exercise is also proven to improve quality of life for cancer survivors who continue during

physical activity treatment,” he says.

High-intensity exercise such as running intervals appeared to be more protective than light exercise, according to the study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

The findings were generally consistent across all types and stages of the disease prompting the researchers to recommend a stronger focus on exercise as a way of warding o breast cancer. a

Women who did vigorous exercise such as having a workout at least three days a week had a 38 percent lower risk of getting breast cancer. There was a similar reduction for women who were generally fit and active throughout their lifetime.

Exercising three times a week significantly cuts the risk of developing breast cancer, research shows.

Fundraising heart

Wine & Art 2022 is a fundraising dinner and auction to raise funds in support of Tiny Hearts – child heart research in Canterbury.

Hosted by The Canterbury Medical Research Foundation (CMRF) in partnership with Heart Kids NZ, the November 5 event promises a night of delicious food, matching wines from the North Canterbury Wine Region, and the chance to take part in a live auction.

Prominent Christchurch artists Tony De Lautour and Bryan L’Estrange are among those auctioning o their work in support of the cause.

“Heart disease is a big part of our lives in Aotearoa. This week alone, 12 Kiwi families will be told their child has a heart condition,” says CMRF Director Melissa Haberfield.

All funds raised at the event will go

directly to the Wine & Art 2022 Grant. Researchers in the area of child heart health can then apply to access funding.

“Christchurch is home to some of the world’s top paediatric researchers. Through fundraising, we can support them as they make discoveries that have the potential to save the lives of our most vulnerable children,” says Melissa.

University of Otago, Christchurch senior lecturer and neonatal paediatrician Dr Sarah Harris is supportive of the mission to fundraise for research into children’s heart health.

Her project - identifying pulmonary hypertension in babies born very early - has the potential to significantly improve health outcomes through early intervention.

Pulmonary hypertension is a type of high blood pressure in the lungs that a ects heart function.

“In premature babies this condition develops silently and can cause the baby to need prolonged breathing support, grow

poorly and have an increased chance of dying. Using heart scans we can identify these babies early and intervene to give them the best chance at life,” says Sarah.

Heart Kids NZ CEO Dr Ruth Gorinski says heart kids and their families can be faced with an uncertain future, but with research comes hope.

“There’s a tremendous amount of work to be done in this space. Thirty years ago children were dying, but now – with advances in knowledge and modern technology – they’re surviving and living purposeful lives.”

“At Heart Kids NZ, we are committed to partnering with CMRF to support the translation of research into practice, and I can’t wait to see what new advancements come from this.” Tickets can be purchased on the website below.

THE HIDDEN MEANING OF concussion

QUICK FACTS ABOUT CONCUSSIONS

Concussions do not discriminate against age, gender, or lifestyle, they can happen at any time to anyone.

They take time to heal. Often people return to a healthy, active life before the brain has fully recovered from a concussion.

That’s because a trauma anywhere always sets up a chain of events which the body tries to accommodate for as long as it can. The body is very good at masking and compensating the impact of a head knock or fall.

Gill, a specialist CranioSacral Therapist, uses internationally accepted CranioSacral techniques on the full body.

These techniques loosen up or unjam head bones, the membranes surrounding the brain (which then form the spinal canal), tailbones, organs and nerves allowing the spinal fluid to move freely around the brain.

This enables the spinal fluid to do its job of feeding and detoxifying the brain. Potentially the long-term benefit is a healthier and more resilient brain.

Problems can appear sometimes immediately, but other times years later, Gill explains.

From experience, she believes that if a person has one concussion or has had subsequent concussions, they are highly likely to have poor brain health later on in life.

CranioSacral helps bones and other things move better again, by supporting the spinal fluid to clean and feed the brain, so that the repercussions of concussion may be somewhat mitigated.

Gill’s extensive website showcases positive testimonials ranging from rugby players who su ered head knocks, to others su ering ongoing issues who have found relief after attending the Bealey Avenue clinic.

Concussion symptoms may include migraines, headaches, dizziness, tinnitus, nausea, double-vision, fatigue, poor sleeping, vomiting, neck pain, nerve problems, poor concentration, aggression, depression and anxiety.

There are an estimated 36,000 head injuries in New Zealand every year. Signs of a concussion aren’t always obvious, and can include having trouble concentrating, brain fog, trouble sleeping, and spells of nausea.

WHAT IS CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY?

CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive approach to treating concussions. It helps release tensions deep in the body through the central nervous system to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance.

FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT WWW.CONCUSSION.NZ OR CALL 03 365 7801.

Gill Redden has witnessed time and time again the aftermath of concussions or bad head knocks that were never identified at the time of the original accident.

the perfect match

Seafood is one of the great delicacies in the cuisine world and a special occasion meal is not complete without the perfect glass of wine to go with it. Here are some match-made-inheaven wine and seafood pairings to try.

MUSSELS — CHARDONNAY

The flavour of mussels changes a lot depending on the cooking method. You’ll often find mussels soaked in red or white wine, but whatever way they’re prepared, you’ll want to have a bottle of chardonnay on hand. A white wine that is eloquently delicate—just the right touch of floral to handle the flavour contrast in the mussels.

OYSTERS — CHAMPAGNE

There is a lot to love about oysters and the fact that Champagne goes so well with the salty delicacy is one of them. Like most seafood dishes, there are numerous ways to prepare oysters. Garlicky, grilled and spicy, citrusy— the list goes on. Because of that, you want a wine that can handle the versatility; that’s where Champagne comes into play.

CLAMS — SAUVIGNON BLANC

Sauvignon blanc is a wine that pairs well with a wide range of seafood, including juicy, delicious clams. This type of wine is especially complimentary with spicy food and bold flavours, such as fresh chilli and herbs, which are also a great additions to any clam dish.

SALMON — PINOT NOIR

Salmon is a rich, hearty fish, packed full of those good Omega 3 fats. Smoked salmon has a smoky flavour, with a deliciously smooth texture. A lighter red wine such as pinot noir is a wonderful accompaniment for salmon. It’s fruity and assertive enough to withstand the thicker, oilier flavours, but not overly tannic enough to overpower the fish.

PRAWNS — PINOT GRIGIO

A crisp, sparkling, minerally white wine like pinot grigio is ideal to pair with succulent prawns. You almost want your wine to act like a squeeze of lemon that respects the flavours of the seafood. A crisp rosé, still or sparkling, or even a prosecco will each emphasise something di erent, and all go nicely with prawns.

SETTING THE SCENE

Atmosphere is everything, so a great way to change your meal from an everyday dinner to a date night special is to create a romantic atmosphere. Bring out the silverware and cloth napkins, lay out a nice tablecloth, and add a few candles to the table for a romantic touch.

SPICE IT UP

Have fun and instead of just one of you making the meal, why not make it together or turn your date into a cook o ? Pull out the aprons while you’re at it, as there is nothing worse than getting spaghetti sauce on your white shirt before you tuck in!

Including an interlude between the main course and dessert is a great way to incorporate some quality time. Why not play a game of cards and add a prize that winner gets to choose the sweet treat, or gets served by the loser.

All of us, myself included, are constantly reminded by both written and spoken rhetoric of the property market’s nuances. It’s going up. It’s going down. It’s reached the bottom. It’s near the top. It’s gone from FOMO (fear of missing out) to FOOP (fear of overpaying)… and for ordinary Kiwis doing their best to buy well or even sell with an element of satisfaction, it can feel like a minefield.

So, what can I tell you that provides some insight into not only our current local market but the dynamics that govern any market?

Market cycles basically consist of four main phases.

Before we look at them, it’s useful to acknowledge that this concept has been in existence for nearly 100 years and reflects the efforts analysts have made trying to assist and predict market forces.

See if you recognize them – or perhaps your own personal property market position.

Boom

You’ll know this one. It’s said by some authorities to be the first stage of the property cycle. As the word suggests, the price of property rises, asking prices are exceeded, auction is the favorite method of selling and demand is greater than supply. It’s exciting, both fast and furious, and it favors sellers.

It’s hard on buyers, particularly firsthome buyers, and can result in scenarios where what you paid to buy could be considered too much when you go on to sell, something I have witnessed

RIDING THE PROPERTY Cycle

recently. If you haven’t already guessed, we have just had such a period (the last 18 months, coming to a halt around April 2022) and we haven’t been alone: it’s been an international occurrence. Real estate consultants and property owners who fared well during this period will look back on it as one of the most extraordinary of real estate periods.

What follows this stage is referred to by a number of names including:

Peak or Slowdown

Often you have an affordability issue related to the preceding boom, the consequences of an oversupply of property and the sense that a change is on its way. This is evidenced by longer days on the market, altered auction clearance rates and buyers proceeding with caution rather than abandon.

Trough or Slump

Next, it’s the turn of the ‘Trough’ or ‘Slump’, as some have called it. This is just what it feels like; there’s a greater swing towards the needs of buyers rather than sellers. Prices are also adjusted, usually, but not always, down and confidence ebbs, though not necessarily for buyers. They can actually feel empowered by the changes, but there’s a warning required here.

Let’s skip to Tony Alexander, a wellknown, now independent, economist who referenced what’s happening for first-home buyers in a recent article.

“Things may be changing very quickly amongst first home buyers and if you have a misplaced focus on getting your first housing asset at the bottom of the price cycle rather than your first owned

home then the clock is ticking against you.”

“The housing cycle is moving towards a preparatory phase for turning back upwards.”

Recovery

And this moves us towards the fourth stage of the property cycle, ‘Recovery’.

With spring here, we are noticing more confidence, busy auction rooms, better clearance rates, higher open home attendances.

Who knows where it will go. If you’re a buyer, you’ll have a different agenda to sellers, if you’re a realtor you’ll have a foot in a number of camps, and if you’re an old head like me you’ll just keep moving forward.

Every market has its winners; I happen to think it’s currently more of a balanced market.

It’s not the dizzy 2021 extravaganza, but there are great properties available, owners are looking at things with a more realistic lens, and 29 years of experience have taught me it’s about getting the property you want.

Don’t wait to confirm the recovery phase is on its way. Now is the time to rethink your plan.

Do something and make the most of the property cycle you find yourself in.

Expand your space

Extending our home’s footprint to create another comfortable space is high on many a wish list.

However, outdoor areas are often too hot, too cold or frustratingly windy, but otherwise are the very spaces we want to be in.

That’s where the team at Louvre Solutions can help.

“We create additional outdoor spaces that can be tailored to our customers needs. We can design a space to incorporate outdoor kitchens, fires or barbeques, with virtually no limitation on the design and shape of the space,” says Co-Director, Erin Shields.

“Our systems can be integrated into almost any type of dwelling.”

With more than 17 years in the business, owner Craig Rogers, can come up with

almost any solution to the challenge that an outdoor space may bring.

“Our products are coated with a durable powder coat or anodized finish. Louvre Solutions o ers almost any colour match with most other building materials. All these coatings come with a 15-year manufacturer’s warranty.”

Louvre Solutions o ers two lighting options: LED strip lights or LED flush mounted down lights, which can be installed into the frames. Both options are dimmable and are integrated into the roofs control system and can be operated by a remote control or smart phone.

“Our louvre roofs o er the ultimate weather protection from the extreme sun, and rain. All of our roofs are fitted with an

integrated rain sensor that automatically closes the louvre blades upon the first drop of rain.”

Louvre Solutions’ products are manufactured from materials sourced from within New Zealand, with the exception of the European manufactured electronics and motors.

Now is the perfect time to enquire about a louvre solution for you that could be installed as early as late summer.

Designed and manufactured in Rangiora, Louvre Solutions have installing agents in five locations across the country.

Eden starts here

LOTS OF POTS

Gardeners come out of hibernation, excited and eager to implement all those landscape plans their brains have been incubating over winter.

First and foremost, every gardener (and non-gardener) needs a little inspiration and advice, and Grow Landscape and Lifestyle is the ideal place to start.

Thanks to a discerning curation process, everything here is that little bit di erent. The words exotic, artisan, textural and magnificent would not be out of place here. From pots, bowls, planters and troughs

through to water features and cloud trees, this can only be described as the garden lover’s Garden of Eden.

Water features are a specialty here, and with over 30 models on display, there is something to please everyone.

From classic urns through to contemporary copper panels and everything in between, browsing these water-features at leisure is a highly pleasurable experience.

All that is required for the water features are a power and water supply.

They can be delivered and installed by the team, or can just as easily be installed by the customer, if preferred.

Fans of terracotta will not be disappointed by the vast array of terracotta pots that showcase the most beautiful glazes and textures.

Also popular are planters, pots and troughs (of up to 2 metres in length) of lightweight fibreglass/ cement, which make for easy manoeuvring when required.

For the ultimate garden talking point, nothing comes near a cloud tree; once seen you know you have to have one.

Cloud trees are best described as really big

bonsai. Up to at least 20 years old, typically a cloud tree is trimmed into elaborate shapes, transforming the tree into a natural sculptural artwork.

Open six days –Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm, and Saturdays from 10.00am to 4.00pm, there is no better time to get your garden gorgeous for spring than right now.

Grow Landscape and Lifestyle can arrange delivery throughout New Zealand, or call in for a browse at 69 Moorhouse Avenue, Christchurch. Phone 03 365 9945.

We know spring has sprung in Christchurch when both North and South Hagley Parks are carpeted in spring bulbs and our world-renowned blossom trees on Harper Avenue burst into flower.

Your sanctuary

Butterfield Bathrooms have been making this essential room beautiful as well as functional for more than 40 years. Design Specialist Joel Crack says, “If the kitchen is the heart of the home, then the bathroom must surely be the central nervous system.” We spoke to Joel about why having a great bathroom is the key to a great life.

The bathroom is one of the most used rooms in the house. “There is no denying that everyone needs a visit a few times a day.”

The bathroom is a huge factor in determining your home’s value. “Impressing buyers with an attractive bathroom is a massive selling point. While many ‘DIYers’ can competently spruce up a bedroom with a coat of paint, a great bathroom calls for an expert, and buyers are thrilled when it is already perfect.”

It is a place of delicious solitude. “If you live in a busy home, have young children or very attached pets, often it’s only the click of that lock on the bathroom door that gives you some time and space to think.”

If a bathroom is not kept in tip top condition, it can end up costing a lot of money. “Do yourself a favour and keep your bathroom in peak order. Give it some love and it will remain your little sanctuary.”

It can be more than a nuisance if the fixtures are not working well. “That shower handle that pulls o every single morning? It’s taking up precious morning minutes, as well as skyrocketing your blood pressure. Your health deserves a bathroom that works.”

An oasis of calm, and a place where water runs, the bathroom is the perfect environment for contemplating life’s issues. “Whether you are a great mind, or more standard issue in the brain department, it is well known that all the most creative thoughts come under the gush of a shower.”

It is a great place for thinking about the future. There are no distractions (unless, ahem, you are one of those that take your phone in). “With a comfy seat, and a mirror to look yourself straight in the eye, there is no better spot for asking yourself ‘what do I want?’, and ‘how will I get there?’”

The bathroom bookends your day. Most likely, you are in there first thing and last thing. “Setting the tone for the day with a lovely experience, and feeling pampered before bed is a bit of luxury in life.”

We are familiar with the kitchen being referred to as the ‘heart of the home’, but the bathroom provides an equally vital function.

One Auckland-based pet business is taking a radically refreshing approach to overcoming a multitude of pet health issues by applying the principles of naturopathy and functional medicine to your pet. As a director and naturopathic nutritionist, Maria Brown is determined to bring about a paradigm shift in the way we think about and address our pets’ health.

Instead of grabbing a bottle of pills or a potion, in the quick-fix ‘pill-for-an-ill’ fashion, she challenges pet owners to pause and focus on root causes, and to not just treat symptoms. Empowering pet-parents to work through a simple and empowering process, based on the foundations to optimum health, she lays out steps to strengthen a pet’s health, using diet, microbial balance, restoring gut integrity and improving liver and kidney function.

“No-one can argue our pets are up against a myriad of chemicals on a daily basis, added to the chemical and heavy metal load they already carry. My ‘Spring SpringClean Checklist’ may be just what your pet needs,” she says. For a copy email sales@micromed.org.nz

The red-carpet themed fancy dress or Great Global Greyhound Walk (GGGW) took place on 25 September to raise awareness for the breed. From Invercargill to Whangarei, 24 walks took place throughout the country, setting a record for New Zealand which first participated in 2014 with just five regional walks.

While greyhounds are renowned for their speed, these pets sauntered down the red carpet as proud ambassadors for other ex-racers that are still awaiting a loving home.

The GGGW saw greyhound owners from more than 40 di erent countries all walking on the same day, with the common goal of adoption awareness.

Greyhounds as Pets (GAP), the national adoption programme for ex-racing greyhounds, hosted a greyhound runway at Auckland’s event in Cornwall Park, and an after party in Christchurch Central, fundraising for the greyhounds in their care.

GAP has found homes for more than 3000 retired racing greyhounds to date, carefully matching each one with their perfect new family.

Famed for their athleticism, greyhounds are actually lazy pets, with many enjoying 18 hours of sleep and one short walk a day.

GAP says they make great apartment dogs, are loyal companions, and enjoy accompanying their human to a cafe or the pub.

Earlier this month, throughout New Zealand, hundreds of retired greyhounds took to the red carpet all around New Zealand. CARPET

Inspirational home

Strategically positioned in October each year, the show connects 150+ quality home building and renovating businesses with over 12,000+ motivated homeowners looking for products, inspiration, ideas and expert advice to complete their home improvement projects over the popular spring/summer break.

This annual three-day event has been helping homeowners plan their renovation and new home build projects for over 40 years, and includes all manner of indoor and outdoor home renovation/building products and services.

Aside from the inspirational aspect for attendees, home shows provide a multitude of benefits for homeowners and home makers planning to remodel or rebuild, or to upgrade appliances and accessories.

Attending a home show can provide

valuable insight and ideas about what products you should choose, and which company can serve your needs best.

TALK DIRECTLY TO SUPPLIERS

An excellent reason for going to a home show is so that you can talk directly to the suppliers of products and services. While a company’s website may be bursting with helpful information, there’s still nothing like getting to talk face-to-face with the real product experts.

SEE PRODUCTS FOR YOURSELF

Hundreds of quality home building and renovating products will be showcased so you can see, touch and, in some cases, try before you buy.

It’s a great way to view a range of possible product options and compare features and pricing to find exactly what suits you and your project.

EXPERIENCE THE LATEST INNOVATIONS

Home shows are great places to see all the latest innovations, technology and modern home trends from materials to appliances, furniture and fittings, accessories and a wide range of products and services. Often companies will unveil a new product or service at a home show.

SHOW SPECIALS

Many home show exhibitors o er great “show specials” on the day so if you’re ready to buy, this is a good way to get the best bang for your buck. And there are always giveaways and draws to enter too.

The Canterbury Home Show is the South Island’s longest running and most successful event of its kind.

OUTDOOR DINING

Gone are the days of the backyard being a single slab of grass for the kids to play on. We now see our garden as an extension of the home, bringing our colour scheme outdoors and giving our outside spaces a sprinkle of personality.

For a breezy, beachy look, paint an accent feature or screen in Resene Duck Egg Blue or lighter Resene Bluetooth. Pair it with bright white décor, including plant pots in Resene Black White to achieve a relaxed Hamptons vibe. If you’re after a more feminine touch, simply swap out the blue screen and pots for smoky lilac hues such as Resene Mamba or Resene Juniper. Continue the theme by introducing colourful plants like lavender or rosemary for a delicate touch.

Accentuate the natural elements of your outdoor space by staining your shelves in a Resene Colorwood wood stain. With a variety of hues and strengths, Resene Colorwood will protect your timber furnishings and give them a sophisticated update while still retaining the natural beauty of the grain.

If you are looking for a stain for your deck or timber flooring in your courtyard, check out Resene’s colourful range of Resene Woodsman stains.

For a bold courtyard that packs a punch, consider a more vibrant range of Resene colours. Paint your courtyard walls in a deep green, such as Resene Forest Green or Resene Mangrove. Sophisticated and ochrebased, these greens are sure to turn your courtyard into a statement piece. The green hues, reminiscent of forest scenes, will create an added connection to nature, while the darker tone will give a feeling of depth to the space, perfect for those smaller courtyards or balconies. Textures such as rattan, rugs and wooden shelves can be incredibly e ective and will add life to the space.

The backyard barbeque get together is a quintessential Kiwi tradition, so why not take your garden or courtyard to the next level with a splash of vibrant Resene paint?

As days become warmer, the time for touching up paintwork, indoors and outside, also arises. Many DIYers start with an interior wall or two, keen to get to grips with rollers and masking tape, so for all of you, here are a few tips from Metropol:

1 Clean the surface before you start. Use a tack cloth (a beeswax-impregnated cheesecloth), otherwise a damp (not dripping) cloth will su ce.

2 Buy good quality brushes and rollers. Cheap, low-quality rollers may leave fuzz and lint embedded in the paint, leaving you with bumpy walls. Cheap brushes leave streaks.

3 Purchase good quality paint. Go to a reputable company and talk to the team. They’ll help get the right paint (and the right amount) for the job.

4 Wear latex gloves, especially if using an enamel or oil-based paint.

5 Apply painter’s tape (blue tape) to protect surfaces not being painted, such as the junction between walls and ceilings.

6 Wrap brushes and rollers tightly in cling film at the end of your painting session, if you have more to do, or you can wrap them in a plastic bag and freeze them.

Outdoor rooms

Maybe you’re keen on a new outdoor dining and entertainment area before summer? An array of landscaping ideas, solutions and products are available at the Canterbury Home Show.

You will find experts to talk to across a range of outdoor options from lawns and landscaping to furniture and furnishing, patios, carports and canopies to spa pools, swimming pools and garden sheds.

It is healthy for both the mind and the body to be outdoors, and having an inviting space makes it more likely to be used often. A total revamp is one option, but there are also many small updates that can create a big impact.

HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS:

Add a pergola, or canopy.

Turn the deck into an outdoor room.

Install an outdoor kitchen/bar.

Brighten it up with lights.

Add more plants.

Include a statement outdoor rug.

Update your current outdoor seating.

Add extra comfortable seating options.

Toss in a few pillows.

Looking to spruce up your outdoor area? Garden need a bit of a makeover?

MADE EPIC Landscaping

Established in 2019, Epic Landscape Design may be one of the new kids on the block but with over 20 years’ experience, a whole heap of horticultural knowledge and a recent acceptance into the New Zealand Master Landscapers Association, it’s fair to say owner Luke Robertson knows what he’s doing. His secret to success?

“Listening to the client and creating a space that meets their wants, needs and desires,” he says.

And what he’s been hearing a lot lately is the desire for outdoor entertainment areas.

Much like the courtyard garden for a client in Merivale featured above and below with two multi-use areas designated to cooking, dining, and lounging. With no space for table and chairs, the bar leaner creates a practical separation between the two spaces. What a place to enjoy the city’s everchanging seasons.

Eelegant and classy elements outdoors add to living space and to a property’s value.

At Galaxy Home Decor, customisation is the key to meeting individual space requirements.

They o er a 10-year warranty, free onsite quotes, and interest-free finance.

Customers like Norman and Linda Wilkins are among many satisfied clients. “Galaxy built us a carport here in Christchurch. It is a beauty! It was also significantly cheaper than a similar one marketed by another company. The team were really good to deal with, e cient and excellent communication. Sleek and minimalistic, Aire Puri is a ceiling-mounted unit that safely and e ectively disinfects rooms, says Neil Cubis CEO of UV Innovations. “Eliminating up to 99.9 percent of all airborne viruses, mould and other bacteria, it is an e cient

and a ordable way to reduce the transmission of harmful viruses, including Covid-19 and influenza,” he explains.

It works by utilising UVC technology through an upper layer flat radiation device to disinfect the space it is in.

A fan inside the main unit of the device causes an indoor air convection e ect, bringing air from the immediate surroundings into the device and exposing it to the UVC light (the age-old proven solution).

“Nasty airborne particles, such as bacteria, viruses and mould spores, are immediately destroyed while the air is passed through the unit, with the UV light rendering the pathogens useless to either reproduce or transmit, returning fresh, hygienic air back into the environment,” adds Neil.

Aire Puri has 9 UV LED chips inside and target optical control technology, which makes rapid 360 degrees disinfection possible.

The device’s centrifugal fan improves sterilisation e ciency, as it can accelerate local airflow with its three speeds.

Safe to use in occupied rooms, it can be installed either directly onto the ceiling or recessed into the ceiling. Its sophisticated design complements any setting.

To ensure maximum e ectiveness and safety, it is required to install the device at least 2.3 metres from the

ground. At this height, the UV technology is shielded, so no UV light can escape.

“The Aire Puri’s lifespan is up to 10,000 hours, which, if you think about it, equates to a long period of peace of mind, knowing your sta , customers or family’s health is well protected during these challenging times,” says Neil.

He adds that UV Innovations looks forward to answering any questions on these scientifically and safety tested products at the Canterbury Home Show, October 14 to 16. Site # 136.

An unpleasant fact of life though it is, pandemics and epidemics will never go away, nor will those myriad of other contagious and infectious diseases that keep resurfacing when we least expect it.

Long have trees been admired by man. Journalist, poet and soldier Joyce Kilmer wrote the poem Trees in 1913; its opening lines read “I think that I shall never see a poem lovelier than a tree”.

We plant trees to celebrate milestone events, to honour the memory of loved ones now gone, to give shelter, to provide food, or simply to contemplate for their absolute magnificence.

Established in 2008, Allwood Trees and Shrubs stocks around 15,000 trees at any one time, including deciduous, New Zealand natives and exotic evergreens.

Allwood’s garden and landscape services include consultations, quotes, soft landscape plans, through to delivery and planting, landscape construction, and garden maintenance.

Director Mark Hutching heads an experienced team who work hard to uphold the nursery’s philosophyto grow quality trees, plant the right trees for gardens, and give the best garden and landscape advice.

Allwood Trees and Shrubs are at the Home Show, 14–16 October 2022. The team look forward to chatting over any garden queries or arranging landscaping consultations and quotes.

The nursery is located at 913 Shands Road, Prebbleton, Christchurch. Call 03 349 9240 or visit the website for more information.

Luxury lawns

There is a huge range in the quality of products sold for lawn management and enhancement, and paying more for products does not guarantee the ideal result.

For years, the team at Readylawn have had access to lawn care products normally available only to premier sports complexes and golf courses. There are specific fertilisers, folia applied products, soil moisture aids, and soil amendments, that encourage strong plant growth and root development.

For the last 50 years, Readylawn has been

developing its range of the best grass seed blends on the market. “We have now developed our very own “Lawn Life” range of premium professional lawn care products, and made them available to the home lawn care market for the first time,” says Roger Morgan, owner of Readylawn. Visit the Lawn Life website and social media feeds for more information, or to request a lawn care expert to call around for a consultation contact us. The online shop is already available on the Readylawn website.

A beautiful lawn is a sign of a great deal of love invested. It takes time, but also good products to produce an enviable lawn.

MUSEUM BUILD

The redevelopment means everything inside its buildings has to be moved to temporary premises before construction can commence. It announced its $195 million redevelopment in 2020, although construction costs in New Zealand have soared since then, and the project has also had to make budget provision for significant cost inflation during the next five years.

Canterbury Museum Trust Board Chairperson David Ayers says the cost increase did not come as a surprise, and the board has agreed to increase the budget to $205 million, although this covers only a fraction of the escalation. “We are actively pursuing options to get back within our budget,” he adds.

The museum currently has secured $125 million funding for the project which will see the Rolleston Avenue attraction closed

to the public from autumn 2023, for up to five years. The museum is in discussion with potential funders including Central Government.

Museum sta expect to start moving the collection and themselves to o site storage and o ces later this year. A popup museum will keep the flag flying in the central city, alongside museum visitor attractions Ravenscar House Museum and Quake City.

Canterbury Museum staff have begun planning to pack up 2.3 million taonga (treasures) as they gear up for the building’s redevelopment.

FeelingA

This is my last column as Mayor of Ōtautahi Christchurch, and I have to say that I am as optimistic now for our future as I was when I first ran in 2013.

Despite all the financial challenges we have had to face and the crises we have continued to confront, we always find a way to get through and come out the other side better than ever.

I wanted to use this column to thank everyone who has helped me in my role as Mayor. Although there have been some tough times, I have never felt prouder to represent the city where I was born and raised, including on the world stage.

I have loved the citizenship ceremonies, the community events and the special

occasions that have seen projects come to fruition and people’s dreams come true. Thank you for sharing these precious times with me.

We have really turned the corner and people can see that we truly are a city of the future – fit for the 21st century and ready to take on the challenges that the climate crisis is bringing.

I have already cast my vote in the council elections with these challenges in mind. It is the first time I haven’t voted for me in a long time. Please make sure you vote too.

I love this city and always will.

This month, Te Pae Christchurch hosted it’s 100th event – a milestone we did not expect to achieve so soon after opening.

While there are a couple of reasons to achieve this in such a short space of time, the overwhelming feedback we’ve had, and certainly what is showing in our bookings, is that there has been a pent-up demand for Christchurch and its many wonderful attributes, which can now be realised postCovid-19.

It’s why our city is bucking national accommodation trends and reporting steady increases in room nights, and why the past few past 4-5 months have seen a whirlwind of activity, both for us and across the city.

It’s also why, after a number of tough years, we are noticing a growing sense of optimisim.

With Covid-19 restrictions soon to be a distant memory, and as our city heads into spring – surely one of the most beautiful times to be in Christchurch – there is a sense that the positive momentum is only going to keep increasing.

With ChristchurchNZ undertaking an ambitious and exciting new project to define our identity, the city set to host some of its most popular events over the coming months and fantastic new infrastructure such as Parakiore and Te Kaha on the horizon, there’s never been a better time to visit Christchurch –something event organisers are discovering if our future bookings are anything to go by.

Aerospace taking off

Ilearned this at New Zealand’s inaugural Aerospace Summit this month, which showcased the rapid moves Aotearoa is making in the sector, which is worth $24 billion a year globally. Over 300 delegates attended this exceptional event at Te Pae Christchurch with 40 speakers, five indepth panel discussions, aerospace exhibitors and even breakdancing stormtroopers.

Kea Aerospace CEO Mark Rocket, chair of Aerospace Christchurch, sees Christchurch as the gateway to space, as it is to Antarctica, and it’s estimated that by 2030, the city will be home to hundreds of aerospace companies providing thousands of jobs.

Christchurch and Aerospace weren’t words you’d traditionally link together, now local businesses are reaching

new heights through space science and innovation.

Growing rapidly, the industry is crying out for diversity, a topic of focus during the Women in Space panel. Less than 20 percent of the aerospace workforce worldwide are women, and only half are in engineering and technical roles.

As rocket scientist Dr Priyanka Dhopade pointed out, multiple studies confirm that diversity is crucial for innovation so we need to challenge traditional career gender–bias.

Career confidence starts in childhood so adults need to arm girls with the self-belief that they can be scientists, innovators and leaders.

New Zealand has huge potential to become an aerospace nation with Christchurch at its centre, and fostering diversity will help us reach this status faster.

Nurturing children

In late August, Te Papa Hauora, the Health Precinct, proudly supported the launch of a new collaboration, ‘Research for Children Aotearoa’.

This initiative is being led by the University of Canterbury and the University of Otago, and strongly supported by local Tangata Whenua and Pasifika.

A first for New Zealand, Research for Children Aotearoa is about collaboration for impact, and a drive towards more equitable outcomes for all children/tamariki and their families/whānau. It will enable and support worldleading, targeted research, that identifies and supports the needs of all children as they grow up.

It will provide the foundation to take child research in New Zealand to a new level and will influence positive changes to policy through identifying the best

ways to nurture children.

It is intended to be a platform for coordinated research that will provide foundations and appropriate protections, to ensure we can all better invest in our children.

It is exciting to see researchers and institutions working together to foster excellence across disciplines, and increase the impact for children, within and across clinical, medical, sociological and educational domains.

There is an acute need across New Zealand society to address failings in the nurturing of our children. Once more Canterbury will demonstrate what a great place it is to pursue important, cutting edge, collaborate research that can make a real di erence.
