Congratulations to all winners in the 2022 Canterbury House of the Year Awards

This impressive two-bedroom home perfectly demonstrates how a simple rectangular plan and lean-to building form can be elevated into something truly special. While the build obviously had its challenges because of the steep site, it is without a doubt an uplifting house.

Supreme Award and Canterbury Registered Master Builders 2022 House of the Year under $1 million

Builder: Williams Elvidge | Location: Redcliffs

Tucked away down a private lane above Redcliffs sits a home that looks out over the central city and beyond. Like many homes across the city, this house could well have been lost to the Christchurch earthquakes. Suffering from severe damage to both the patios and retaining walls, its restoration is something to be celebrated as this sophisticated, stylish home has been faithfully brought back to its former glory. A well-deserved winner of the Supreme Renovation category.

This home is impressive from every aspect, which is reflected in one of the judges’ commenting that in his 14 years of judging House of the Year, this is one of the best homes he has seen. It has the scale of a commercial build, but at the same time is highly liveable and sits comfortably alongside its suburban neighbours. While it would compete with the most luxurious hotel for grandeur, it is also welcoming and unmistakably a family home.

At a time when people’s budgets are tight, the home exemplifies how modest building materials, with skilful detailing and expert workmanship, can punch well above their weight.

ate clearly remembers gathering, foraging, creating, and painting from early childhood and the sense of satisfaction this provided throughout her years.

“Whether it is ice bowls, cake plinths, wreaths from foraging, or apples from the tree to serve a multitude of purposes, I am constantly inspired to evolve my own style, often planning or planting for the seasons ahead to bring a vision into reality.

Following a photoshoot of her house and garden for a New Zealand magazine feature in 2021, Kate teamed up with photographer Anna McLeod. The pair spent the following months, weekend after weekend, creating and photographing to document Kate’s ideas, tips, recipes and seasonal events.

KATE’S TOP ROOM STYLING TIPS

Her book, due out mid-October, provides inspiration for growing, gathering, propagating and creating food and flowers through the seasons, and all of those special occasions.

After work she can be found in her floral shed, paint studio, garden or kitchen as she turns her ideas into reality.

With husband Phil, Kate has designed and decorated many houses and gardens which they have enjoyed living in, and entertaining friends and family. “Styling a new build is addictive,” she laughs.

1. FLOWERS, FLOWERS AND FLOWERS. If you don’t have flowers in your garden, pick foliage. It too can be displayed just as beautifully and can bring a room to life. If you want to grow flowers and don’t have the space, you can always use pots. I always have flowers in the house no matter the season.

2. NEVER UNDER-ESTIMATE the value of textiles and colours for changing up a room.

BOOK LAUNCH

Their most recent property, on the outskirts of Christchurch, boasts a four acre country garden which is continually expanding into the paddock as a result of their desire to harvest more fruit, flowers and foliage for Kate’s after-hours activities.

This passion has flowed into her everyday adult life where Kate manages to balance her busy working life with entertaining friends and family, and creating and styling, in her Thereafter-hours.wasn’taday where she suddenly decided ‘I want to be a ‘stylist’, instead she applied what she loved into her everyday life. An active relaxer, she juggles her role as General Manager for a local law firm, and her everyday desire to create.

K

“That’s exactly why I wanted to compile a book to share such ideas,” Kate adds.

Kate Williams helps run a law firm, and in her spare time is a creative stylist, well-known in Christchurch circles. She talks to Metropol editor Lynda Papesch about her work/life balance and her upcoming book.

“Seeing the delight on the faces of visitors, I realised there was a real interest for people to gather and create something beautiful out of something so simple,” she says. Kate’s guests roam the house and garden asking questions about growing, gathering and creating. Her style is very much DIY. “It’s about ‘doing it yourself’, not in the sense of building but in creating everything from scratch, being inspired by elements in your surroundings that you can repurpose.

Originally from Southland, Donna trained in Dunedin before making the move to Christchurch in 1991. For her, dentistry just makes sense, and the same is true for many of her loved ones. “We have four dentists in the family, and I’m married to a dental technician! I’m blessed to have found a profession I really enjoy.”

14 September 15, 2022 Metropol

ith decades of service to the New Zealand Dental Association under her belt, Donna Batchelor has never been afraid of going the extra mile for her community. She was recently awarded the NZDA Service Award for 2022, a great recognition of her outstanding contribution and volunteer spirit through service and commitment.Theceremony was held at Te Pae a few weeks ago, and Donna says it was an honour and absolute surprise to win amongst such excellent nominees.

When hearing more about Donna’s story, it is clear to see that receiving the service

award was well deserved.

Finding a career, you really enjoy is not something everyone gets to experience, and since Donna herself has found that, she hopes to continue to help others do the same.“Italk to a lot of teenagers, and I tell them you have to find the thing you know you can do each day and enjoy. I also let them know that they have to like people to

A remarkable 23 of Donna’s patients have, with her encouragement, gone on to become dentists. And 41 of her other patients now work as dental technicians, therapists, assistants, or hygienists. So how does one person have such an influence and impact on so many?

“I think it is just encouraging people in that direction, and just planting the dental

seed,” Donna explains. “I've had patients come along and look at what we are doing. There are quite diverse things people can get into in dentistry, for example, forensics - there is a whole forensic side of the dentist industry which is really di erent and interesting. It’s about not letting it be limited, people worry it’s going to be too hard or too di cult.”

As sport is such a core part of Kiwi culture, it is the hope to make it as safe as possible that inspires Donna.

Donna’s service continues outside of her orthodontic practice, some of that time spent as a part of an exciting PhD Research team at the University of Canterbury. The research team is looking at longitudinal e ects of head injuries in school pupils playing contact sports – a cause very close to Donna’s heart.

Donna has been involved in working with rugby players, making mouthguards for the Crusaders amongst other teams. Through this connection, she heard about the study that would be starting soon and was asked to be involved.

The study, supported by Canterbury Medical Research Foundation, will follow two junior rugby teams over the 2022 and 2023 seasons. All players will wear mouthguards fitted with sensors to record the speed and acceleration of impacts.

Players can choose whether to wear the headgear or not – allowing researchers to look at the measure of protection. A study like this has the potential to change the future in New Zealand sport.

“I talk to a lot of teenagers, and I tell them you have to nd the thing you know you can do each day and enjoy.”

“I’ve always been encouraged to play a lot of sport, to be able to take away some of the risk factors would be great,” Donna says. “If you don't start somewhere, it never happens.”

A videographer will capture play to ensure mouthguards are measuring collisions rather than players biting down.

Here for Life

One of the very best things about Canterbury for so many locals is the accessibility to many di erent regions nearby. A couple of hours in the car will get you to stunning coastal towns, quiet rural towns and of course beautiful mountain ranges. A day trip is often just the refresh needed - a mini holiday fuelled with new views, car singalongs and a touch of exploring. About an hour out of central Christchurch will get you to Waipara, perfect for a day at a winery or maybe hopping between a few in the popular wine region. Mount Somers makes for a great day out in nature and is only a short hour and a half drive away. For just under two hours, you can get yourself to Hanmer Springs, for a day of alpine bliss. Just over two hours will get you to the stunning Kaikoura coast, where you can spend time looking for magnificent wildlife and exploring the local gems. Of course, Akaroa is a favourite, only just over an hour drive away.

out & about

Christchurch has evolved so much in recent years. A wander around the centre of the city is the best way to see the developments you may have missed. Of course, walking isn’t the only mode of transport when exploring a city. Jump on an electric scooter, available all-around town and zip through the streets, stopping o where you want along the way. There are a wonderful community of local cafes and eateries throughout the city, where you can refuel with co ee and lunch, as well as many great bars to grab a drink. The garden city is so varied, with a strong heritage presence and focus on the restoration of significant buildings, as well as the exciting new centres and areas.

HEAD INTO NATURE

When living in a city, it is easy to stick to your same routines and activities. But with a new season and one that brings warmth and (hopefully) sunshine-filled weekends, it is time to shake up your normal day out and try something new. Here are a few ideas from Metropol on how to spend a weekend, and enjoy all Christchurch has to offer.

EXPLORE THE CITY

TAKE A DAY TRIP

Getting a good dose of nature is great for refilling your tank and getting some fresh air into your lungs. Luckily, we are spoilt for choice here in Christchurch, and in every direction, there is nature ready to be enjoyed. It is hard to beat a day at the beach, and you have a few to choose from. Head out to Sumner, Taylors Mistake, New Brighton, or over to Corsair Bay for a dose of salty air and water. The Port Hills are full of endless tracks for walking, at di erent intensity levels. Try the Harry Ell Walkway, Rapaki Track, Godley Head Track or Sign of the Bellbird Track. If you would rather get your exercise in on two wheels, many tracks around Christchurch make for a great day of bike adventure. Try Bottlelake Forest Park, Spencer Park, McLeans Island, or the Bridle Path.

PADDLEBOARDING

A popular sport for many Kiwis, and made easier by the many great surf breaks around the country. Christchurch has a few too, including Taylors Mistake, Sumner Beach, New Brighton or a farther drive over to Hickory Bay.

Those lucky enough to own a boat, believe nothing beats a day on the water, especially when the sun is shining. Whether fishing, pulling the kids on a wakeboard, or simply cruising and relaxing, the season for those sweet days is near.

SURFING

Anyone wanting a more gentle water activity might find paddleboarding just the trick. Standing or kneeling on what looks like a really large surfboard, and using a paddle to wade the water, is a peaceful way to spend some time outdoors.

Pacific oysters (pictured) are still available until about November and are widely accessible throughout NewBluZealand.oysters have long been considered the finest in the world, and this small shellfish is prized throughout the world.

A quota system was introduced in 1963, although this was progressively reduced until in 1970 with 23 boats operating, it was 115,000 or 5000 per boat (in eating terms that equates to two dozen oysters for every man, woman and child in the country).

Estimates this season, from 1 March to 31 August were that around 7.5 million Blu oysters were harvested and slurped down.

With Christmas on the horizon, making your own Christmas cards adds that personalised touch to the occasion. The new Cricut Card Mat 2x2 allows you to craft four cards simultaneously, even if they are di erent designs, saving heaps of time over doing them one-by-one. You’ll have your whole Christmas card list ticked o in no time.

Whether you own a Cricut Maker 3, Explore 3 or the smaller Joy machine, what you can do will depend on the materials, and accessories you have.

CR A F T Y O U R O WN EasyPress 2

To achieve this you need an EasyPress, which heats to a precise temperature (controlled by an app) so as not to burn the specialised iron-on vinyl or your garment. While it may seem daunting at first, following a YouTube tutorial makes even multilayer, multi-colour transfers a fool-proof experience.

gifts

One of the most rewarding Cricut experiences is heat pressing vinyl on to T-shirts, or custom designs on bags and cushions etc.

When your Cricut has cut a more intricate design into some material, picking (or as crafters call it - ‘weeding’) out the little unwanted bits can be tricky. The brand new BrightPad Go is a handy, rechargeable backlight that helps highlight the finer details, so weeding and tracing patterns becomes a whole lot easier.

Many of you will be familiar with Cricut crafting machines. The range of available accessories allows you to personalise gifts for friends and family. Metropol’s gadget guy Ian Knott checks out three of them.

Crafting with Cricut is extremely addictive, so if you’re even a little creative, then it’s worth exploring some of the easy-to-use accessories that can take your gift giving to the next level.

here’s nothing better than a barbeque with friends on the back lawn or relaxing on the deck in the sunshine with a good book. One way to bring the outdoors in – whether you have limited outdoor space or are just looking for a way to fill in an empty corner or room – is to create a lush conservatory.Aconservatory is the perfect way to create an inside oasis when the weather isn’t playing ball. Repurpose your spare room, or even just a corner of another living space, for reading and relaxing while being surrounded by plants.

The trick to creating a conservatory space is an abundance of natural light, so choose an area that’s close to a window.

Paint the walls in a cheerful, neutral tone with warm or green undertones. O -whites work perfectly for this, choose colours such as Resene Double Merino to add a touch of warmth and reflect light for a luminous space.

While conservatories aren’t nearly as commonplace in New Zealand as they are in the United Kingdom, that doesn’t mean you can’t steal some elements of classic English conservatory design to create your own.

A painted floor is a great way to add some flair to your conservatory. Paint it in a deep green or blue, such as Resene Blue Night, or use a stencilled e ect with a lighter colour to create a sophisticated and interesting space.

This conservatory space couples walls in Resene Double Merino with a feature wall in Resene Quarter Karaka, creating the impression of depth and also introducing colour into the space. Using di erent strengths of the same colour, such as Resene Merino, will allow your space to feel cohesive without becoming boring. Another important element to consider when creating a conservatory space is texture. Layering textures such as rattan, rugs and wooden shelves can be incredibly e ective and will add life to the space.

“There is no doubt that there are more listings and the process of selling a home is taking longer – but again, that is a normalKelvinmarket.”emphasises that there is no need to panic if people are selling and buying in the same market.

Kelvin Howell and Jacqui McBride of Mike Pero Fendalton have been working from home for over a year now, and, contrary to expectations, have found it beneficial to their real estate work.

While Covid-19 has undeniably dealt heavy blows to our health and our economy, weirdly, it has also brought about changes in the way we live that might actually be good for us.

Kelvin shares some insight as to where the property market is currently.

“Crucial to any buy or sell proposal is to have an agent who understands the value of good marketing - who truly wants the best for their clients with whom they have built a closeKelvinrelationship.”saysthatas time isn’t always on the purchaser’s side when aligning finances and insurance, it lessens the pressure if all the paperwork is in order prior to signing that final purchase agreement.

Kelvin and Jacqui’s 30 years combined experience in real estate is the core strength they bring to their clients; they understand all aspects of buying and selling property.

When the Christchurch City Council’s draft of its new proposed transportation plan for the city was made public a few weeks back, it raised a few eyebrows.

Snaking my way past Birdlings Flat towards Little River, the 707 is just as happy to be sauntering around corners as well as having its neckGetwrung.onthe power and it is a sensation. It can eat up corners on full noise while staying nearly completely flat and true.

With that twin-turbo V8 well into its stride, you quickly back o to a cacophony of V8 crackle when it dawns that you are rapidly venturing north of a socially acceptable speed.

There is a considerable list of on-board kit, but I do wish the infotainment system was of the touchscreen variety.

Front to rear, you have carbon fibre sills, spoilers, scoops and other additives to help with downforce and to keep the 707 as slippery through the air as possible.

Its price tag certainly puts it out of reach of mere mortals, and it does like to drink, but the DBX707 is a revelation and very probably the new yardstick for the ever-growing segment that is the “Super SUV.”

ike the regular DBX, the 707 has a 4.0L twin scroll turbo V8. However, the 707 gets a reworked onboard ECU and those twin turbos are much bigger. As a result, total power output is a gargantuan 520kW, or 707HP, hence the name, and 900Nm of torque.

Plus, those optional 23-inch forged alloys housing carbon brakes, in my view, lookThatepic.carbon fest continues inside with the floating centre console, seat backs, and inner door panels featuring some degree of carbon fibre.

707 sports a new statement of a front grill and radiators which increase cooling by around 80 percent.

Push start and that gargantuan turbo V8 makes itself known but doesn’t shout like other Astons on start-up, though you can tweak this by turning on the new active sports exhaust.

I can genuinely believe you should be able to reach 100km/h in a claimed 3.3 seconds and go on to a top whack of 310km/h. Staggering for a car which weighs 2248kg.
