The days ahead will prove interesting. Trying to set aside personal agendas in the interests of what is best for the whole city is a di cult task, and, as those with local body history know, often a thankless task. Congratulations and good luck to you all.

We’re heading into an exciting time for Christchurch with all the events that form part of Christchurch On Show and Cup Week, and the revitalisation of the hospitality industry post-Covid-19.

ong before he attended law school in Christchurch for five years, Craig Sisterson had an abiding fascination with crime and solving mysteries. Years later it led him to found the Ngaio Marsh Awards (held annually in Christchurch to celebrate New Zealand crime, mystery, and thriller writing), and Rotorua Noir.

Currently living in London, but a regular visitor to New Zealand, Craig is also a past judge of the Ned Kelly Awards and the Mcllvanney Prize, describing himself as an “all-round crime tragic”.

Two years ago, he wrote Southern Cross Crime, the first comprehensive guide to modern Australian and New Zealand crime writing. Now he’s followed it with Dark Deeds Down Under (Volume 1), editing what is the inaugural collection of Australian and New Zealand crime stories.

Published by Clan Destine Press, it’s the “first of many” he says, comprising 19 new stories from Australian and New Zealand established and new novelists.

“I continue to be amazed by the strength, depth, and breadth of Aussie and Kiwi crime writing.

“As readers around the world are increasingly discovering, Antipodean writers are at the forefront, crafting cracking tales in vivid settings, with

unforgettable characters in standalones and ongoing series,” he said.

The anthology zips across a variety of Antipodean landscapes, urban and rural and into the past, present, and future. “It’s a stunning smorgasbord of stories, styles, and settings,” Craig says.

He adds that New Zealand and Australian

“The stories travel the criminal trails of the two countries from the dusty outback to South Island glaciers, from ocean-carved coastlines and craggy mountains to sultry rainforests or Middle Earth valleys, and via sleepy towns to the seething underbellies of our cosmopolitan cities.”

“Crime fiction is one of the most popular story-telling forms in the world and has been for a century or more. Australia and New Zealand are home to some of the most exciting voices in the genre and it is an honour to share them with the world.”

crime writing share more similarities than di erences when viewed against the backdrop of crime fiction globally.

“Australian and New Zealand writing is from the edge, and I am not just talking about ‘outback noir’.

“We share a colonial past. We’re both frontier countries. Our landscapes are wilder and more rugged. There is a di erent sense of nature and the countryside – ours can kill you.

“Even in cities such as Melbourne, the wilderness is very close. And, then there are the elements, not just the heat, but also the cold, and the wild, wild weather,” he says.

In September, Christchurch Airport Chief Executive Malcolm Johns announced he was leaving the airport after nine years, to take up an Auckland-based role. Metropol editor Lynda Papesch caught up with him before his departure.

one on one TAKING A NEW PATH

Christchurch Airport has been through a taxing and busy time during the last few years, largely weathering the storm thanks to Malcolm Johns in the pilot’s seat.

He’s the first to admit that the past decade has been one of material challenge.

“Firstly we navigated the postquake period, then the terror attacks and then the global pandemic. It’s impossible to be unchanged with so many events coming at you, and our team and business are no di erent.

Following the 2010-2011 earthquakes, the business was “re-engineered”, which meant that during the Covid-19 pandemic, the airport company navigated well.

“The value of the airport grew, we were profitable each year of the pandemic, and we paid dividends,” explains Malcolm.

“This reflects the strength and depth of the team here at the airport. They are now (unfortunately) specialists in major external events that toss our business around. Fingers crossed for the next decade!”

In a role such as his, a good team dynamic is critical, he says, adding that heading into what will be its busiest summer period for some years, both the team and the airport businesses are in good shape.

“We are optimistic we will see all our airline customers return to Christchurch during the next 18 months or so.”

Looking ahead, the immediate vision for Christchurch Airport is to remain the Gateway to the South

Island, and to restart all its aviation activity during the next 18 months.

“Christchurch is our home and the engine room of our business. This isn’t going to change anytime soon,” says Malcolm.

“We will also continue to develop our property portfolio on the Christchurch campus as we have done over recent years.”

He says it was with great foresight, the Christchurch City Council voted in 1936 to set aside enough land at Harewood for the airport to develop for 100 years, despite being unsure about what the future of aviation looked like.

“That took intergenerational thinking and courage to do that - in 1936 WWII was still a future event, aircraft were basic and recreational or military, there weren’t regular commercial passenger flights.

“Yet here we are, 86 years later still developing the same airport on that same piece of land!”

A decision to buy land in Central Otago was driven by the same intergenerational thinking, he explains.

“We know 80 percent of jet flights to/from Christchurch and Central Otago connect to either Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane or Auckland. We also know those airports have more than $10 billion being invested to expand their capacity to double passenger numbers over the next decade or so. We know only Christchurch can cater for that growth.”

What this means, he says, is that new airport infrastructure in Central Otago is essential at some point in the next few decades.

“We will continue to explore that need during the coming years.”

SIMPLY THE BEST

Christchurch is the best place in New Zealand to live the Kiwi dream, regardless of how old you are, says Malcolm.

“We came to Christchurch after the earthquakes and because of the earthquakes. We thought the airport would play a role in post-earthquake Christchurch.

“When we arrived there were more cranes taking buildings down than putting them up. There were plenty of debates around anchor projects, cost share agreements, what was Christchurch postquakes.

“Christchurch’s old heart is what it was before the quakes. It is just beating inside a new skin now, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to have been a part of that transition.

“The pandemic has provided a line in the sand between a postquake mindset and a beyond pandemic mindset, and we can see and feel that across the city.

“Christchurch is looking and feeling fantastic. Nothing’s ever perfect but it feels way more positive and people coming for events and conferences are telling a positive story.”

let the music

play on

Christchurch will come alive with the sounds of music from 14 – 20 November as our city celebrates Music Therapy Week, with this year’s theme being Make the Change.

Kimberley Wade, Neurologic Music Therapist and Director of Southern Music Therapy (SMT) explains, “Music Therapy New Zealand wants to bring an awareness as to what music therapy is, who we work with, and why more people should choose it as a career.”

Prior to becoming a music therapist, Kimberley studied psychology and classical singing. It was while performing in an opera that the accompanist (a registered music therapist) suggested to Kimberley that she should think about a career in music therapy.

“It was a lightbulb moment – that I could merge my two passions, because I love the music side and I love the therapeutic side.”

Kimberley is passionate about working with adults with neurological conditions – a passion that grew from her co-founding of the Cantabrainers Choir.

“Around 15 years ago I worked in special education and had one client with traumatic brain

injury, whom I loved spending time with. I started talking with a speech language therapist about the benefits of forming a choir and, eventually, we made it happen.”

The Cantabrainers Choir is termed a “therapeutic choir as music is the tool that builds on helping our members have a space to improve or maintain their voice and communication through singing and socialising,” Kimberley says.

SMT comprises a team of nine professionals who work with children, people of intellectual disability, and people with neurological conditions. All the therapists have a Masters qualification in Music Therapy, all are registered with the New Zealand Music Therapy Registration Board, and all o er one-on-one therapy sessions as well as groups.

Constant professional development is another crucial component to SMT.

“Because we work in such a variety of areas, it’s vital to keep upskilling with the latest research and keep fresh with creating our resources,” says Kimberley.

After a four-year hiatus, the international FAST5 Netball World Series is back and our city plays host at the Christchurch Arena on the 5th and 6th November 2022. With six world-class teams coming to town, this Rugby Sevens-styled festival of netball is a great weekend out for all ages. It’s a colourful celebration full of music, dancing, dress-ups, competitions and prizes with the fast action front and centre.

New to FAST5? Allow us to bring you up to speed. As the name suggests, five player teams take the court, each game lasts just 24 minutes and features “power plays” where all goals scored are doubled in the last 90 seconds in each quarter.

Scoring is a whole new ball game allowing Goal Shoots and Goal Attacks to shoot from anywhere in the attacking third. Goals are worth 1 point in the inner circle, 2 points in the outer circle, and 3 points outside the circle. The pace is electric with rolling subs and incredible athleticism with players even lifting like lineouts popularised by former Silver Fern Anna Harrison – now a ectionately termed the Harrison Hoist.

Where can you see this kind of talent, across two action-packed days, all under the one roof? The FAST5 Netball World Series is the answer! With the FAST5 Ferns dominant in previous tournaments, you won’t want to miss this competition. Tickets are limited so go to ticketek.co.nz and get yours today.

Our Ford Football Ferns are coming home. The team returns to Aotearoa New Zealand for the two-game G.J. Gardner Homes Series against Korea Republic in Ōtautahi, Christchurch. Get to Orangetheory Stadium on November 12 and 15 to see the Ferns continue preparations for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.

Ford Football Ferns and Glasgow City defender Meikayla Moore, a proud Christchurch local, says it’s always special to play at home, but to pull on the Fern in her hometown will be particularly memorable.

“To know that we are getting to play in Christchurch, where I’m from and where a couple of the girls hail from is pretty cool. I’m really looking forward to those two games in November and hopefully we can put on a really good show for those that turn out,” she adds.

Finally, fresh o their US tour after selling out New York’s Madison Square Garden, American rock band The Killers are coming back to New Zealand after their sell-out 2018 Australasian tour.

Touring our shores as part of their worldwide “Imploding the Mirage” tour, their new album draws influence from Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel and Bruce Springsteen, and is described as “something of a return to Heartland Rock sounds.”

Originally announced in 2020, the band put their travel on hold while the pandemic raged on globally, going back to work on a critically acclaimed 7th album Pressure Machine. Along with plenty of new tracks, concert-goers can be sure they’ll belt out the classics like ‘Mr. Brightside’, ‘Somebody Told Me’, ‘When You Were Young’, ‘Human’ and so many more. Got your tickets? Don’t forget to explore Christchurch including our very own Killers-themed rooftop bar with some of the best views of the city, for a drinks and nibbles before and after the show.

Hot o the back of the T20 tri-series against Pakistan and Bangladesh at Hagley Oval, our BLACKCAPS continue the contest with the subcontinent this cricket season. Christchurch hosts the third of the One Day International series against India on Wednesday November 30. Set to be a thrilling series finale, the midweek day-nighter is sure to be a spectacle.

We’ll be making history with this match as well, as it’s the first time the BLACKCAPS take on India with the white ball under lights at the Oval. Our Men in Black are sure to be hungry, looking to ‘right some wrongs’ of their recent ODI series versus Australia. Fortunately now our team are in camp in Christchurch, Hagley Oval will be a far more hospitable environment in front of a raucous home crowd, yourself included.

Cantabrians all agree Hagley Oval is one of the country’s best cricketing venues to watch a game live. The sprawling embankment with park views located in the leafy green Hagley Park South at the edge of the central city is a perfect location for a day of cricket finished under lights. The riverside jaunt back to town after a full day’s cricket is a must, frequenting the many bars and restaurants on your leisurely walk back into town.

Toys should be something each child engages with from their own unique perspective. Because of this, the best toys won’t show you on the box exactly what they can do, but rather will encourage children to find out for themselves.

The knowledgeable sta at the Canterbury Playcentre Shop are on hand to o er helpful advice if you’re unsure of what will best suit each child.

Christmas is looming large - time to think about finding the perfect treasure to excite and engage your child.

Take chunky wooden blocks for example - not a very exciting looking toy to adults, but in the hands of a child they become a multitude of wonders. They start out as a stacking and knocking down activity, but then become roads for cars or tracks through a jungle for animals.

It all depends on what the child is excited about at the time. Best of all, children will play with the chunky blocks for years and they will last.

Games are another gift that can provide years of fun. The Canterbury Playcentre Shop has a good selection of games for children aged from two years. Some favourites are the range of co-operative games that allow children of all ages to work together to win the game. 17 Buchan Street, Sydenham. Call 03 377 4354.

Leading

Five emerging directors from the Canterbury region have been recognised for 2022.

The Emerging Director Award was established by the Institute of Directors (IoD) to foster the development of upcoming talent in governance and leadership across business and the community sectors.

The award recognises executives, managers, directors and individuals who are at the early stages of their governance careers.

The recipients of this year’s award, Jane Fowles, Leandra Fitzgibbon (pictured), Mariann Matai, Emma Hodgkin, and Aaron Smith have backgrounds spanning technology, human resources, law and agriculture.

Each winner receives a range of opportunities that will support their on-going governance development.

These include mentorship with an experienced director, one year membership with the Institute of Directors and complimentary attendance to IoD branch events, $1500 towards IoD course costs and a one year internship placement with a relevant board.

Malls are exciting retail locations, usually attracting excellent numbers of people to your business. Key things to consider are:

1. Is the rent being charged in the mall location fair in comparison to non-mall situations?

2. Have you viewed the lease? Malls often charge a fee based on sales revenue of the business as well as rent.

3. Can you ensure that your retail location is clearly seen and in a busy foot traffic area?

4. Will the mall promote your business?

5. Have you got a product which has wide appeal? Some larger products may require customers to access the premises by vehicle.

6. Are you prepared to negotiate with the mall management regarding utilising a better location or remaining in a good location?

As we see it, some businesses are wellsuited to malls, other businesses may be better to find a more appropriate location for their style of business.

FINANCIAL ADVICE

With the guidance of your financial adviser, you’ve completed a fact find, a risk assessment and decided what your goals and aims are for the short, medium and longer-term.

However, you then have to continue to make regular decisions going forward, and it’s just all too hard.

What happens next? That’s where the team at Alistair Bean & Associates – Financial Advisers come to the rescue. “We’re a little di erent from other financial advisers,” explains company principal Alistair Bean.

“We take all that hard work out of it. Firstly, you require flexibility and nothing locked in. “Then you authorise us to ‘make decisions for you’, so you don’t have to.

“We specialise in assisting lump Sum Investment and KiwiSaver Clients.”

Alistair says that clients receive a Statement of Advice (Investment

Plan), based on information they supply. “You then give us signed authority to act in your best interests, to make all the investment decisions as to where your funds are placed on your behalf.

“We then continue to monitor and review your portfolio within an investment platform on an on-going basis.

“This enables us to rebalance your investments as appropriate, as your own circumstances change, which then allows us to purchase assets for you, not only in your investment portfolio, but also the same opportunity should you also have a KiwiSaver (minimum balance of $50,000 held), within New Zealand and all around the world,” he adds.

“You may be an aggressive, conservative or defensive investor. Your financial adviser will assist you in deciding what level of risk you are comfortable with and then assist you from there, once again, making decisions for you so you don’t have to.”

You’ve made a decision to use the services of a financial adviser and invest wisely.

FLEXIBILITY

You want flexibility, so you require the following:

• Are you allowed to have regular withdrawals to meet your monthly budget needs? Yes, you are.

• Can you take lump sums for special one-o projects? Yes.

• Can you add additional funds, on a regular or one-o basis? Yes.

• Do you get regular updates? Yes.

• Do you have online access? Yes.

• Are the funds in your name? Yes.

If you want to have a specialist financial adviser assist you with looking after your funds, want to know more answers to yes or no questions, and particularly want to have someone making decisions for you so you don’t have to, contact us either at our website www.abafs.co.nz or phone direct on 03 288 0404.

FOR

Team members (pictured) are armed with the best tools and techniques to get your hair and skin ready for spring, at Hair Art & Beauty.

With restrictions having eased, the salon’s team members have been able to attend education workshops in Auckland and, finally, internationally, too.

Colour experts Megan and Carla recently headed up to Auckland to attend a colour and cut workshop with international educator Theo Dimitri, eagerly learning new trend styles and tones.

In August, Luana and Carla jetted over to

Sydney for the Australian/NZ Beauty Expo, picking up new information and technology. This enables them to provide the most e ective results for clients.

After a final trip to Sydney last month for Carla to master some new tips and tricks from a La Biosthetique Balayage and Blonde Course, everyone is back to normal hours in the salon, and gearing up for the busy season.

The most exciting news for the team came just recently, as they were announced

as a finalist for the Sustainable Salon of the Year category in the Industry Awards 2022.

“We are so incredibly proud of the accumulative work we’ve all put into making H&B a sustainable salon, working to keep the industry, and our community, as eco-focused as possible. Thank you to our clients and supporters who have helped us make this goal a reality,” says the team.

From royalty to rock stars, purple has long been a favourite fashion hue.

Also associated with wealth and power, purple represents high fashion, gothic styles, and also a floaty, feminine vibe. As a colour, it is associated with a variety of meanings, including wisdom, creativity, royalty, power, ambition, and luxury. It can also represent magic, extravagance, peace, pride, independence, and wealth. So long as you love what you’re wearing, none of that really matters.

a thing for rings

Name a better feeling than owning a bespoke piece that has been handmade just for you: personalised and precious, custom-made rings capture an occasion for a lifetime.

Sophie Divett Jewellery’s new ‘Build Your Own Ring’ collection allows you to design your own ring, based on her nature-inspired styles, which is then crafted by Sophie right here in her Christchurch studio. By combining ethically sourced jewels and organically hand-carved settings, you are guaranteed a long-lasting, one-of-a-kind piece of jewellery. Simply choose a band setting from the collection; from leaves or flowers to the modern Duo style, to a subtle classic solitaire, the right style will speak to you. Next, pick your gem: sustainably sourced garnets and sapphires, recycled diamonds, in a variety of sizes and shapes. Once confirmed, your unique combination is crafted into a perfectly refined reflection of yourself, or your loved one, in the form of a ring.

“Everyone’s style is unique, and it’s so beautiful to make a special piece that reflects that,” Sophie says.

To design your piece in time for Christmas, head to Sophie Divett Jewellery’s website or visit her studio at 266 High Street, Christchurch Central City to view the full collection and begin your ‘Build Your Own Ring’ journey.

the eyes

Eyes are the window to the soul, however, when they are puffy, dark, and swollen, eyes can be the biggest sign that you are not feeling your best.

WHY DO WE GET PUFFINESS AROUND THE EYES?

The skin around your eyes is some of your most delicate. Mild swelling, pu ness, and dark circles, often caused by water retention or sagging skin, become more common as you age, and are often a result of an accumulation of fluids in the surrounding tissue.

HOW CAN YOU REDUCE PUFFY EYES?

- Hydrate. Drink plenty of water every day to help flush out any retained liquid in your body. Reduce your salt, alcohol, and ca eine intake, as each of these can trigger water retention.

- Try easy home remedies, such as applying cold compresses,

cucumber slices, or chilled tea bags to swollen eyelids. You could also try adding a gentle massage tool to your skincare routine.

- Embrace mindfulness. Stress can have lingering e ects on our body, particularly your skin. Bringing calm and balance to your life can help minimise its physical e ects.

PUFFINESS CAN BE CAUSED BY - Overconsumption of salt - Allergies that cause inflammation and swollen blood vessels - Sinus problems - Fatigue and lack of sleep - Stress - Crying - Underlying conditions - Dehydration

Debbie Reeves of Shoe Therapy says this summer’s superstars are sandals, slides and sneakers, and loafers have made a huge comeback (but did they ever really go away?)

“We love sneakers in all colours but white is bigger than ever. Don’t be afraid of white, we can help you instore with all the tips, tricks and products to keep white sneakers looking good as new.”

Shoe Therapy is known for curating footwear that is that little bit di erent, with eye-catching features such as pearls, studs, metallic accents, and a hint of animal print.

Debbie says favourite brands, such as Django & Juliette, Bresley, and EOS, tick all the boxes this season, as well as the all-important comfort factor.

Fuchsia is the hottest colour for sandals this summer, while tan and khaki bring wardrobe versatility, and gentle hues, such as lilac and blush, add a touch of romance.

“From casual to dressy, from jandals to heeled sandals, whatever the occasion, we have you covered,” Debbie says. Shoe Therapy, 178A Williams Street, Kaiapoi.

bad for

Researchers have found that too much sitting is linked to a range of health problems including several diseases and even some types of cancers.

Even when you engage in 2.5 hours per week of physical activity, increasing evidence suggests that what happens in the remaining approximately 108 hours of the waking week is important for your health. Researchers aren’t yet sure how much we can sit during the day without incurring health risks, but findings suggest the more you move, the better it is for you.

Here are five reasons why you shouldn’t sit for prolonged periods, followed by some suggestions about how you can get more movement into your day.

1. Too much sitting can cause high blood pressure and high blood sugar, and will likely increase your risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease or heart attack.

2. Even if you exercise, too much sitting can make it hard to lose weight. Studies have shown that people who spend more time watching TV tend to gain more weight over time.

3. In one recent study, employees who sat for longer than six hours daily were more likely to have anxiety or depression.

4. Some cancers, especially those associated with weight and metabolic functions, have been linked to too much sitting or lying down. They include breast, colon and endometrial cancer.

5. One study found that adults who sat for 11 hours or more were 40 percent more likely to die earlier than those who sat for less than four hours.

TIPS TO SIT LESS AND MOVE AROUND MORE WHILE AT WORK

If you have to spend a lot of time at your desk or find yourself sitting for prolonged periods of time try the following tips:

REGULARLY GET UP OUT OF YOUR CHAIR, STRETCH and do a range of motion exercises.

STAND WHILE TALKING ON THE PHONE or eating lunch.

TRY A STANDING DESK – or improvise with a high table or counter.

WALK LAPS WITH YOUR COLLEAGUES rather than gathering in a conference room for meetings.

GO FOR A WALK on your lunch break. TAKE THE STAIRS instead of the lift.

Trim up

1

Increase protein, decrease carbohydrates. Snack on nuts, fruit, salads, soups, low GI carbs such as sweet potato or brown rice, meat or protein, plus vegetables.

2

Introduce more movement into your day. Take the stairs where possible, and walk instead of driving.

3

4

If you have a sweet craving, brush your teeth.

Drink plenty of filtered water. Often thirst is masked as hunger. Work out how much water you need to drink by taking your weight in kg and times it by 0.03. e.g. 60kg x 0.03 = 1.8 litres daily.

5

Summer is just around the corner and now’s the time when many thoughts turn to losing a bit of excess weight. Here’s some helpful advice from naturopath Nikki Warren.

6

Eat two small squares of dark chocolate daily if you’re a chocoholic. One to two small squares of dark chocolate a day helps to satisfy a sweet tooth, and to prevent binging.

Consider adding strength training to your daily exercise. Building muscle increases your metabolic rate.

7

8

Stop eating before you feel full. Get out of the habit of eating everything on your plate.

Ditch the sugary drinks. Drink water or flavoured sparkling water.

9

Eliminate lollies, biscuits, cakes and fast food. Not only are these foods going to increase your bad cholesterol, they are empty calories that have little nutritional value.

10

Detox and switch to organic food. Detox diets are usually low in calories and there is a naturopathic theory that releasing toxins from your fat cells helps to boost your metabolism.

ready to rage rolls

A classic tale of beer tasting his way through his 1980s OE, Wigram Brewing Company’s founder Paul McGurk returned home, started garage brewing, built a craft brewery and put down WBC’s first brew on 8 December 2002.

Being part of the craft beer revolution has been living the dream for Paul, although he admits he could not have done any of it without his wife Caroline. Together they have built and grown their business with a host of passionate believers and supporters.

Paul and Caroline say, “staying true to our passion for owning a successful craft brewery and brewing beers we love, while passing that beer love to our customers has been as important as being an active local business in the community we live in and support, and where we’ve raised our three boys.”

To commemorate two decades of brewing great beers, Wigram Brewing Co will mark the occasion with a limited release anniversary ale “Aviator”, a big beer for a big occasion on 8 December this year.

Leading up to Christmas, WBC will host “20 beers for 20 years” events, celebrating with employees, past and present, and amazing partners and customers. Check the website for events and beer treats.

Relish is the perfect choice for bolstering any dish with a big, bold boost of flavour.

Gordon’s ‘Ready to Rage’ Gherkin Relish famous for its tangy punch and strong gherkin notes complemented with herbs and spices certainly does just that. Try the distinctive sweetness and tang in these traditional lunch rolls. Gordon’s ‘Ready to Rage’ Gherkin Relish 400g is $5.40 and available from ‘The Picklery’ @ Gordon’s Pickles. You can have a taste test before you buy. The Picklery Retail Shop is open weekdays from 8am to 4pm at 1 Timothy Place, Wigram. Call: 03 348 0223 or email gordonspickles@xtra.co.nz.

Ingredients

1/4 Cup Gordon’s ‘Ready to Rage’ Gherkin Relish

1 loaf white, sandwich sliced bread

Method

1/2 cup cream cheese

1 small grated carrot

1/2 cup grated cheese

1 Tbsp mayonnaise

Remove crusts from bread. Soften cream cheese, add mayonnaise and mix all ingredients together and spread over bread. Season with salt and pepper. Roll up.

Cover with glad wrap and refrigerate until ready to serve.

For variety, try substituting - capsicum, fresh tomato, red onion, chopped nuts, ham, cottage cheese, gherkins or grated cucumber. Or use wholemeal wraps instead of the white bread.

ANOTHER TIP the relish is also really yummy mixed with sour cream to make a dip.

ALTITUDE cruising

Melty, gooey, and stretchy is how most of us would describe our favourite cheese. It’s also safe to bet that cooking a few slices of cheddar or brie on a hot grill is probably not your go-to technique.

If you haven’t already, meet halloumi cheese. Originating from Cyprus, halloumi has a uniquely firm texture and high melting point, so it can stand up to all sorts of cooking methods, including pan-frying, roasting, and grilling. Halloumi is traditionally made with a mix of goat’s milk and sheep’s milk but is now also made with cow’s milk. It is salty and savoury and makes for a delicious vegetarian protein addition to salads and summer dishes.

HERE ARE A FEW EASY TIPS FOR COOKING HALLOUMI

1. Slice your halloumi evenly (approx. 0.5cm), and pat dry with a paper towel.

2. Heat a non-stick griddle pan or your BBQ to medium-high heat, and brush lightly with olive oil.

3. Sear the halloumi strips for 1-2 minutes each side, until golden and soft.

4. Add to a fresh salad, noodle dish, cooked breakfast or on its own as a tasty snack.

THINGS TO REMEMBER

You can’t undercook halloumi, and you’re better to slightly underdo it than overdo it.

Once it starts going golden brown, it will cook quite quickly, so be ready to flip it or remove it from the heat.

Combine with the peanuts and set aside. In the same pan, fry the halloumi until brown on each side and set aside. 1 Boil the noodles in a large pot of water over a medium heat until al dente. Drain and set aside. For the sauce, place all the ingredients in a pot over a medium heat, stirring to combine. Add a little water if the mixture becomes too thick. 2 To assemble the salad, place all the vegetables in a large serving bowl. Add the halloumi, noodles and sauce and mix well to combine. Not every eating establishment has that seamless indoor/ outdoor flow, so it is a sure bet that when one such restaurant is discovered, it soon becomes a favourite destination.

Union Fare Eatery is a spacious and handsome villa, that has been tastefully refurbished to provide a delightful ambience in which patrons can enjoy the ultimate dining experience.

This semi-rural restaurant o ers both a brunch and lunch menu, with lunch dining hours extended for the season until 3.30pm.

The idyllic garden setting makes for the perfect place to relax with friends, sipping a glass of bubbly or a cocktail or two while

feasting from a shared platter.

With the evenings also now extended, from Thursday through to Saturday, now is the perfect time to get in early and book for corporate functions, family celebrations or that special intimate dinner.

Owner and Head Chef Tom James has put a lot of thought into creating his new summer menus for brunch, lunch and evening dining.

Coconut chia pudding; sesame duck hash; the big breakfast, and the scrumptious blueberry and dark chocolate hot cake, are but a few of the delectable dishes available on the brunch menu.

The lunch menu boasts soul-food to savour, such as hot smoked salmon, venison fry and bacon, fennel and coconut chicken salad, fried chicken and cornbread, and ground beef burger.

Evening starters are mini smoked salmon fish cakes, rosemary and garlic polenta fries, buttermilk fried chicken, and fried squid with mango, pepper and charred peanut salsa with avocado.

For mouth-watering succulence, the choice of mains o ers a 200gm beef fillet, chicken Ballantine wrapped in streaky bacon, grilled hapuku (groper) or a panseared cauliflower steak.

Tantalising desserts for sharing are dark chocolate orange and almond brownie with blackberry compote and vanilla bean whipped cream, house-made cheesecake, and dark chocolate, lemon sorbet and vanilla bean trio ice-cream.

Christmas Day is also well in hand, with Tom and his team donning their aprons to bring a prodigious Yuletide five course feast

to the table, at $150 per person.

Three seating times of 12 noon, 2.30pm and 5.00pm ensure plenty of freedom to plan around opening of presents and catching up with family and friends.

The dining time is allocated for 120 minutes per sitting. Regular updated Christmas Day information can be found on the restaurant’s Facebook page.

Tom is proud of how the business has grown its place in the community.

“Union Fare Eatery is my first business after 20 years in hospitality. I love this business and the community that supports us so strongly, it’s a privilege to be in this position.”

“I want my customers to be able to trust that everything we do here has the customer experience in mind. The sta here are a collective of people passionate about what they do. They really do strive to deliver quality, authentic product and service.”

“The environment here is warm and welcoming, with a beautiful established garden outside that is a picture in spring. We love seeing people come down for a cocktail and relaxing with something to graze on during summer afternoons. The place has a great vibe in summer.”

Pie time

Humans have been eating pies since the days of the ancient Greeks, and you can bet your bottom dollar they’ve been arguing about who makes the best pie since then as well.

Ancient Greek, Epicurious, philosophised about a happy life lived well. No doubt if he’d been able to visit Mrs Denton’s Takeaway Café and Delicatessen, he would have used it as a prime example in his teachings.

Owner Delwyn bakes beautiful pies on site with seafood flavours a forte. There is: Chatham Island Blue Cod, Leek, and Parsley, Scallop, Seafood Chowder Pie, and Cream Paua Pie. Each one is a little gem celebrating fresh New Zealand produce. Steak and Kidney, Lambs Fry and Bacon, Chicken, Asparagus, and Cream Cheese, plus traditional options

like Mince and Cheese are also made fresh.

“I specialise in small batch, hand-crafted gourmet pies,” says Delwyn, “and I’ve introduced cabinet keto/gluten-free options such as veggie frittata and sausage rolls. My take home and heat cottage pie is gluten free also.” Sweet treats include homemade apple strudel, custard squares, and red velvet cake.

From November Delwyn bakes Christmas cakes, tarts, and tru es. Mrs Denton’s is open six days, Monday to Friday 8.30am –2.30pm, and Saturday 9am – 2pm.

ROASTED TOMATO AND RICOTTA

atbread

1

1 punnet cherry tomatoes

2 large garlic cloves – roughly chopped

2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil

1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar

1/2 cup pesto

1/2 cup ricotta

1 large store-bought seeded pizza base

3/4 cup zucchini ribbons

1 Tbsp pine nuts – toasted

A handful of fresh basil – roughly chopped

4 fresh thyme sprigs – tough stalks discarded

1–2 squares marinated feta – crumbled

A pinch of chilli flakes

2

Preheat the oven to 180°C fan bake. Place the tomatoes and garlic on a lined baking tray. Drizzle with the olive oil and balsamic vinegar and season with salt and cracked pepper. Roast for 25 minutes.

While the tomatoes are roasting, mix the pesto and ricotta. Smear this over the pizza base. When the tomatoes are cooked, leave them to cool on the bench.

Turn the oven up to 220°C fan bake. Bake the pizza base as per the packet instructions (roughly 7–10 minutes should do the trick). When the pizza base is cooked, arrange the zucchini ribbons on top. Spoon over the tomatoes and garlic with all their delicious juices.

Top with the pine nuts, basil, thyme, crumbled feta and chilli flakes.

Home theatres vs. media room

The term ‘media room’ has evolved in recent years, combining a variety of technological elements to become more of a multi-use space.

What may have once been a media room, for gaming, computers, and watching television, has – in many instances – now become more of a home theatre, outfitted with a large flat-screen television, surround sound and cosy seating. Families congregate to watch movies, friends visit to see the big game, and there’s even room for partying.

HERE ARE SOME ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:

1. Flexible, comfortable seating. Select furniture pieces that can be moved depending on the numbers using the space. Try small and intimate side by side, in rows facing the big screen, or comfortable sofas.

2. Ample screen size: Size matters. The screen should be large enough so everyone in the room can back up and view it from a good angle.

3. Sound-absorbent aesthetics: Flu y sofas, drapery and carpeting help quiet reflections from the sound system.

4. For a clean, streamlined look, hide the media gear behind walls.

5. Cutting-edge technology: The ability to stream movies, music and more from “the cloud” (Internet) has changed the way media rooms are configured. Surround sound systems add to the experience.

Italian Hi Fi manufacturers Sonus faber are well renowned for being the artisans of sound in the audio equipment world. Metropol’s gadget guy Ian Knott takes their latest wireless speaker, the super-stylish Omnia, for a test drive.

Aspeaker is going to be seen at all times, something the designers at Sonus faber know only too well, and the Omnia is a speaker you’ll not only be proud to have front and center, but will make a point of showing o .

With the almost boat hull shape of the Omnia, you can almost imagine it riding the waves of the sound it creates with seven internal speakers delivering 490 watts of power. The unit’s cleverly designed curves giving it licence to distribute pure sound in all directions.

The smooth, interactive woodgrain top invites you to touch it, and you can, to control sound and other settings. A similarly shaped remote control is supplied, but most of your interaction will be through your favoured streaming device.

The Omnia comes plug-n-play ready to stream Spotify and Tidal, and will stream over Apple AirPlay or Bluetooth. For Android users, it has an in-built Chromecast to control via the Google Home app.

If you want to make movie night even more special, then use the Omnia as a soundbar via the HDMI port or Bluetooth.

There is even a phono port to plug in your turntable. With deep and immersive sound that needs to be heard to be believed, and seamless interaction with all your streaming devices, the Omnia lives up to its name which, in Latin, means ‘prepared in all things.’ Be prepared to be thoroughly impressed.

organic reading

In our chaotic lives, a responsibility-free afternoon is a huge luxury for many.

Making space in our lives for focusing on self-care and relaxation activities sometimes requires dedicating physical spaces in our homes to pursue peaceful activities.

This reading nook is the perfect place for just that. The soft chaise lounge is an open invitation for imagination and daydreaming in and of itself, and the casual vibe created through its surroundings and colour palette make it a spot you want to sink into.

You might not even notice it, but your body and your mind both have reactions to seeing colours. Brighter colours stimulate the brain and energise you and can even make you feel a little anxious.

This blend of delicate greys, taupes and a deep dusty blue does just the opposite. Blue, in particular, is a hue that many look to when decorating their homes and

studies have shown that there is no better colour to calm a busy mind. Despite its high-charged name, the gridiron grey-blue shade of Resene Atomic seen on the floor and several of this room’s accents is hugely grounding.

To some, grey can be seen as dull, boring or cold but the right shades of grey such as Resene Half Athens Grey (used as the main wall background colour) and Resene Quarter Delta (seen on the floor) can be very calming and relaxing. They’re the perfect neutrals, which means they work well with pretty much any colour or palette and can seamlessly blend into the rest of your décor outside of your self-care corner.

Creating both tactile and visual textures is also very important for your reading nook. Choose fabrics and finishes that are both pleasant to the touch and beautiful to look at to add to the physical and emotional cosiness of the space.

paeonies pretty

Most of us think pink when it comes to paeonies, however these pretty blooms come in a range of colours, including deep burgundy, sunshine yellow, vibrant orange and all the shades in between.

A popular choice for wedding flowers at this time of year, in the language of flowers paeonies are generally symbolic of love, honour, happiness wealth, romance, and beauty, traditionally given on special occasions as an expression of goodwill, best wishes, and joy. As well as being prized for their gorgeous large, layered flowers and sweet fragrance, these plants have amazing longevity, able to live for more than 100 years. They make excellent cut flowers and can last more than a week in a vase.

DID YOU KNOW?

The peony or paeony is a flowering plant in the genus Paeonia, the only genus in the family Paeoniaceae. Peonies are native to Asia, Europe and Western North America. Scientists di er on the number of species that can be distinguished, ranging from 25 to 40.

Christchurch Paeony has its second annual show on Saturday 12 November at the Kiosk in the Gardens, just over the footbridge from the Gardens' Armagh St Carpark, from 10am to 4pm.

Paeony bloom entries are welcome, with all blooms eligible, says Christchurch Paeony chairperson Michele Moore. “Anyone who wants to enter should bring their blooms on Friday 11 November to the Kiosk between 4pm and 6.30pm. “Cut as long a stem as possible,” she says, adding that blooms in the soft bud stage may be cut several weeks in advance, and stored stripped of most leaves, wrapped in newspaper and placed in a plastic bag in the fridge, without water. “They will hydrate very well.”

“In my mind, no other flower can compete with the perfection and the fragrance of the paeony.”

your masterpiece

Home fragrance is an important part of your home décor. It helps create the atmosphere and feeling you want to capture when you and your guests walk in the door.

Fragrance can come from many di erent things, most popular forms are candles, room sprays, di users and flowers.

HERE ARE A FEW IDEAS:

For fresh, clean and light scents, try flavours of citrus-based scents like lemon, lime, and grapefruit or light herbs such as basil or sage. These are great in the kitchen or living spaces.

For focus and clarity, try scents including peppermint, cinnamon and rosemary. These work well in the o ce or study.

For a cosy and relaxing atmosphere, try flavours such as sandalwood, vanilla and lavender. These are particularly nice in the bedroom for winding down.

All theFeels: The Emotional Side of Buying a Home

It’s easy to consider the many clinical aspects of the property ladder, construction sector and real estate world: their cycles, price points and nuances. But buried inside this analytical framework is a much more elusive element and that’s emotion – the deepest form of that being love.

Why do people love different types of homes, certain neighborhoods or property features?

Isle Crawford, a renowned designer, teacher and creator, in one of her book’s entitled Home Is Where the Heart Is, wrote: “what do we all want? We can look around and see what’s new but today what’s really radical is to look inside of ourselves as we search for a home.”

So, what’s wanted and what’s not? Depending on your age, means and history of purchasing, this might be totally different. Although there is no scientific consensus on the definition of emotions, invariably their presence is felt constantly when a property purchase is made. I’ve been party to the full gamut of emotions associated with property purchase, from elated highs and lows on auction day, to tantrums at missing out in a negotiation situation and tears of joy at securing that house of which dreams are made. As a sales consultant, you will meet up with young parents looking to capture school zones for the future whilst they’re hopefully enjoying great space in the present and older parents stepping up to provide financial assistance for grown children who need additional support.

Needless to say, the emotions governing both these decisions are different; one being anticipation and excitement, the other being a little less excited and definitely more measured.

How about emotional factors that precede locational purchases, like being near the water, having a view of the city or mountains,

or ownership in prestigious areas. Some emotions pull so strongly and are so recognizable that there are articles written on how to counter them. These are an easy find online and one such article had this to say: “[because] it’s a major financial decision home-buying requires a business minded approach.” It was an article submitted on behalf of a banking institution and it had dire warnings for first-home buyers in particular to prioritize matters of the head over the heart, and I don’t necessarily disagree. It’s expensive and heartbreaking when you get it wrong and deeply gratifying when you get that combination of lifestyle needs and budget requirements right.

That’s emotionally fulfilling and probably a goal of everyone looking for just the right home.

Personally, I can’t help being emotional when I’m purchasing property. I tend to be an open book and despite being told by people who have known me for a long time not to be, I still have a heart bigger than my head. Just as well John levels the scales! To everyone currently purchasing, here’s to finding the sweet spot of a property that makes sense financially but delivers emotionally –because they are out there.

PETS

at work

As a pet owner, the over-excited, tail-wagging, ‘welcome home’ is one of life’s greatest joys. How good would it be if you never had to say goodbye in the first place?

More and more companies have been adopting a ‘pet policy’ in workplaces, and the benefits are proving worthwhile.

A FEW OF THE KEY REASONS THAT PET POLICIES AT WORK ARE PROVING POPULAR:

• Creates a relaxed and friendly atmosphere

• Increased employee engagement and motivation

• Reduces stress levels

• Encourages better workplace relationships

• Gets employees out for walking breaks

So, you want to convince your boss that your workplace needs to have a pet policy? Well good news, the hard work has been done for you.

In 2021 Purina conducted research with a thousand pet lovers across New Zealand, which showed just how much happier Kiwis are with pets around.

THEY FOUND…

• 96 percent of New Zealand pet owner respondents felt that having a pet around while working from home improved their mental health

• 95 percent of respondents said pets made them a happier employee

• 71 percent of respondents said it helped reduce their stress levels

• 48 percent of respondents stated pets helped them get outside with more with 43 percent taking more breaks.

Pet safety summer FOR

POISONOUS ANIMALS

Your pet eating poisonous creatures such as jellyfish, blue bottles and sea slugs is more likely during summer when spending more time at the beach. If you think they’ve swallowed something or are showing signs of poisoning, get to the vet as quickly as you can.

DEHYDRATION

Ensure your pet always has enough water to drink. More time spent in the hot outdoors means more hydration is needed. There are some great travel water bowls and bottles you can find for road trips.

BURNT PAW PADS

In the heat of summer, the ground warms up and can burn your pets paws. Hold your hand to the pavement to test it, if it’s too hot for your hand, it is too hot for paws.

SUNBURN

Humans aren’t the only ones who get sunburn. Dogs with short fur and lighter skin are at greater risk, as are hairless cats. Find an animal-friendly SPF to coat them in before you head out for long days in the sun.

HEAT STROKE

If your pet’s core temperature rises above 40.5 degrees, it can be at risk of heat stroke. If not cooled quickly, serious complications can be caused. Be sure to look for warning signs including excessive panting, dizziness, disorientation, unsteadiness, obvious discomfort, or vomiting.

FIREWORKS

In summer people like to celebrate, which can mean more use of fireworks. Keep a close eye on your pets when fireworks are nearby.

LANDSCAPES OF

distinction

A Christchurch company behind a beautiful and sustainable Lake Wakatipu landscape project won the Supreme Landscaper of the Year award, and several others also won accolades in the recent 2022 Landscapes of Distinction Awards.

Held by Registered Master Landscapers, the awards attracted 132 project entries from around the country, representing the top echelon of landscaping design and construction in New Zealand.

Garden design and planting specialists Green Therapy Ltd took out the supreme national title for 2022 with a relaxing retreat (pictured below right) in harmony with its surrounds at Lake Wakatipu.

Wraight and Associates provided the initial landscape concept, in conjunction with the house architects and Green Therapy fine-tuned the planting plan.

Good environmental practices were essential, and included the planting of natives grown from eco sourced seeds in the Wakatipu Basin. Additionally the project utilised local native mulch as ground cover, sourced from wind felled trees along the neighbouring Glenorchy Queenstown road.

AWARD-WINNING DESIGN IN OREWA.
BOB’S COVE, LAKE WAKATIPU.

At last month’s Landscapes of Distinction Awards 2022, the company received the most awards (21) across all categories, including construction, horticulture and maintenance.

Natural Habitats South Island Regional Manager, Ashley Shadbolt is thrilled by the multiple award wins.

“Our clients put a great deal of trust in us to create beautiful landscapes and it’s rewarding to know that work is of a premier standard.”

“Commercial landscapes have their own unique challenges,” says Shadbolt.

“While our residential and commercial clients share similar sentiments on budgets

and timelines, commercial projects require significantly more planning.”

The company’s construction for St John’s picturesque Cromwell Garden won gold in the commercial section.

The garden is a peaceful haven, incorporating natives and exotics typical for the region including iconic stone fruit trees.

“St John was a fantastic client, and the location was stunning. To be able to deliver a landscape for ambulance drivers who we all rely on and who help save lives was incredibly rewarding.”

Natural Habitats’ work on stage two of the Southern Motorway scored silver in the Commercial Horticulture category.

Ashley Shadbolt says the award recognises the amount of planning and

work involved in such a big project.

“We encountered many hurdles. It’s not as easy as just putting plants in the ground. There’s a lot of organisation behind the scenes to deliver projects of this scale.”

Silver and bronze were awarded for the company’s work on the Arrowtown Lifestyle Village.

Their work at Ryman Healthcare’s Kevin Hickman Village in Christchurch also won bronze.

“We bend over backwards to create landscapes our clients will love so it’s really great to have our team’s hard work recognised at a national level.”

The construction of Te Ara Ātea - Sensory Space and also design of Rolleston School Basketball Courts & Sports Wall were among 132 projects from around the country judged in the awards.

The company won the premier award in Landscape Construction and a gold medal in the Commercial Project: Construction Over $100,000 category for work on Te Ara Ātea - Sensory Space, at the Te Ara Ātea Library in Rolleston. The space includes a wheelchair-activated musical timber boardwalk and an individually placed river stone tactical ‘Rumblewalk’. Judges said the overall design has many carefully placed

textures and elements of construction.

“Special attention has been paid to avoid sharp lipping and dangerous edges which could harm children, and these have been wonderfully set into place. Curved shapes with timber are never an easy undertaking and the carpentry skillset shown for the seating and the leading paths around the bold circles has been completed to a very high level with neatly laid out gaps and distances throughout,” said the panel.

Morgan + Pollard also won a 2022 Judges Recognition Award for work on the Rolleston School Basketball Courts & Sports Wall, creating a vibrant new multi-sport space. The recycled rubber surface uses more than 8000 recycled sneakers to bring

new life to the concrete courts beneath, while the bespoke sports wall is a custom design feature that encourages the creation of entirely new ball sports as the children learn to play and adapt to the large void in the middle of the wall.

“The recycled rubber surface is a mosaic of colour, and the clever patterning not only delineates full-size and half-size basketball courts but sets up opportunities for other sporting activities. The new wall with its large window creates a perfect opportunity for children to invent new ball games,” said the judging panel.

The Landscapes of Distinction ‘People’s Choice’ Award for 2022 went to Christchurch company Onlandscapes, for its work on an incredible residential project on Rugby Street in the Garden City.

More than 5000 people voted for the People’s Choice Awards, which were open nationwide to the public to vote.

Designed for empty nesters, Rugby Street (pictured) was created with order, privacy and serenity at the top of the wish list for this full garden make-over.

“They wanted a full make-over leaving only the existing maple tree and perimeter hedging. It was their preference for it to be simple and structured so that they could enjoy the outlook both during the day and

night. It was a privilege to construct this project, and an honour to work with such outstanding clients,” says Ollie Newman of Onlandscapes.

Onlandscapes was established in 2009 by Ollie and Juliet Newman.

After 10 years in the industry Ollie finally knew he had gained all the knowledge and skills required to start up a successful business. Starting o solo and quickly gaining a great reputation in the industry meant that Onlandscapes has needed to expand to cover the demanding work load.

Now with such an experienced team Onlandscapes can undertake any project

regardless of the size.

Ollie says that working with leading designers such as Ben McMaster from Inside Out Design, Craig Wilson from Form and Hayden Stark from Xteriorscapes gives Onlandscapes the opportunity to work on high specification projects.

“Top end designers like these choosing to have their projects completed by Onlandscapes proves that we are an experienced and reputable company,” he adds.

We have a great garden maintenance service. We liaise with you regarding any changes required with your garden and can implement a great maintenance programme to keep your garden looking pristine all year.

Landscape Construction

Allwood has a great Landscape construction service specialising in soft landscape work. From planning to completion, Allwood can transform your property.

The threat of frosts has largely dissipated so now is the time to think about putting in crops such as peas, beans, potatoes, carrots, cabbage, courgettes, broccoli, cauliflower, beetroot, leeks, and salad greens including rocket, spinach, mizuna, mesclun and lettuce.

Heading into November, it’s also timely to add cucumbers, chillies and capsicums.

Gardens don’t have to be large. Herbs such as basil, chives and coriander thrive in pots and are easy to grow, and how about planting a few cherry tomatoes in hanging baskets. You might also like to try companion planting if you only have a small area. Strawberries, lettuces and herbs add interest among the flowers.

$25m MUSEUM GRANT

Trust Board Chair David Ayers says the money is vital to the project’s viability.

“Without this crucial contribution from the Government, we could not redevelop the museum, and address the issues that threaten its future,” he says.

The board has agreed a budget of $205 million for the redevelopment; $175 million for the building itself and $30 million for developing new exhibitions.

With the Government contribution, the museum has $150 million secured. David says the museum will now approach the Regional Cultural and Heritage Fund, and

the Lotteries Commission about further funding.

“I’m confident we’ll have the $175 million for the building secured before work begins on the museum site in April next year. That will give us about four years to raise the final $30 million for the exciting new exhibitions,” he says.

Cruising along

Cruise season is upon us, and the tide is turning as we welcome a steady flow of visitors to our city.

On 27 October, the Celebrity Eclipse docked at the new Lyttelton terminal, marking the beginning of the cruise season and the first passenger vessel on Canterbury shores for over two years.

The new Lyttelton cruise terminal means more to the region than just a rebuild. Akaroa, designed for lighter capacity, has taken the load since the Canterbury quakes. With our new infrastructure in place we are better able to manage visitation in a way that provides a better outcome for residents, businesses and our environment. And importantly for our local tourism and hospitality industries that have faced challenging times, there will be a

spending boost with a steady schedule of ships docking until mid-April.

This includes Ovation of the Seas, that will dock four times carrying over 4000 passengers each time.

I was delighted at the success of our call for Cruise Ambassadors, those who volunteered to share their knowledge, pride and enthusiasm for Christchurch. If you’re interested in a Cruise Ambassador role, do get in touch at Cruise@ christchurchnz.com.

Our city is on show to thousands of visitors who will come to our shores for a short time and we want these passengers to have such a memorable experience that they will share their stories with friends and family and come and visit us again!

Crucial for NZ economy

Digital adoption across sectors of the New Zealand economy has never been so crucial.

In the primary sector digital adoption is highest in business management tools and lowest in areas such as water and e uent management.

As environmental pressures increase, these technologies will be essential for helping farmers manage their environmental impact. Technologies such as sensors and the analysis of on-farm data will enable more rapid adaption of nutrient and water needs.

AgriTechNZ recently completed a study of more than 1000 farmers and growers to gain insight into digital adoption within the agriculture sector. It found that currently 41 percent of farmers and growers are not keen on digital technology. Despite a number of trailblazers across all subsectors and age groups, on the whole, the willingness to adopt early is lower than

outside the primary sector. This will have to change as farmers grapple with climate change.

According to the Government’s advanced manufacturing industry transformation plan, this sector is our largest contributor to exports, however as more focus is being placed on manufacturing that is sustainable and circular with low emissions more digital technology is required.

There are great opportunities to improve manufacturing productivity and wages through investment in more advanced technologies such as Internet of Things and artificial intelligence driven automated processes.

Digital technology will help create a more sustainable manufacturing sector, and also the need for more people with digital skills.

Looking ahead

More than 26,000 fintech companies operated globally in 2021 and worldwide investment topped $US210 billion.

As the fintech sector matures further, and evolves from a disruptive to established technology, there’s good reason to believe that the trends outlined here will shape the sector in 2023 and beyond.

Global e-commerce recorded a decade’s growth during three months of the pandemic alone and transformed the context of customer behaviour.

Digital banking is already used by most Kiwis with mobile devices replacing inbranch/store interaction, and customers are demanding innovative fintechs who can make transactions so easily.

Data in the cloud will continue to unshackle banks to introduce new features, let loose machine learning to beat fraud and

phase out cash and physical cards in favour of virtual cards secured with robust biometric technology.

It’s not just big banks focusing on fintech. Big techs such as Amazon, Apple, Google and Facebook are exploring opportunities for creating their own digital currencies, or refining their banking and lending capabilities.

The finance market is accelerating drive for innovation, low fees and payment platforms such as Dosh, Dolla and the likes of Blinkpay.

We are also seeing new products such as Sugar Wallet help saving management. Then there are the likes of Kernel, Flint Wealth and others moving into the KiwiSaver sector.

All these fast moving changes will be major discussion points at the FintechNZ hui conference in Auckland on February 28 next year.

Women on boards

Businesses with women on their boards do better when it comes to enhancing the effect of strong corporate social responsibility on financial performance, according to recently published research.

The research utilised data from 1507 US firms over a 10-year period and found that the e ect of good corporate social responsibility on marketassessed firm value, is incrementally more positive for firms with greater female representation on their boards, compared to firms with no female members.

Prior research has looked at how a commitment to corporate social responsibility activities, such as supporting positive employee relations and community and environmental outcomes, can improve and enhance firm value, such as share prices and financial performance.

We looked at how gender

diversity might a ect the relationship between those two factors – corporate social responsibility and firm value, finding that when there is gender diversity on boards, this e ect is stronger.

Our findings suggest firms that display gender diversity at the board level are penalised more strongly by the market when they perform poorly in terms of their social and environmental goals.

This could be because women on boards often signal better corporate social responsibility, so when things don’t go well, there’s an element of shock.

The net e ect, however, is that socially responsible companies benefit from having more women on their boards.

dream UNLOCKING THE KIWI

A new real estate firm has just been launched in Christchurch. Looking at real estate with a fresh perspective is the driving force behind the new people-led company, VVV Real Estate.

“We want to open the door for people to own their dream home,” explains VVV Real Estate’s founder Stephanie Robertson. “Whether it’s buying a home for the first time or making a milestone sale, our team is committed to getting the result the client wants.”

The team at VVV Real Estate share common key values, putting emphasis on working together to create opportunities so that everyday Kiwis can shape the future

that they want.

“We want to be part of their journey in a real way - help them through the process, whether it is buying a first home, upsizing, downsizing or investing.

“For us, it’s about empowering our clients. There is so much opportunity out there but if you’re not trained or experienced in real estate, it can feel daunting. What people need are agents that come alongside them, with the right advice and help so they can make their

own decisions about what’s best for them.” Stephanie adds.

Having taken a collaborative approach with people through her previous property development roles, Stephanie explains that VVV Real Estate came about through a desire to build strong ongoing relationships with clients, not just focusing on the shortterm goal of selling a house.

“The business of home should be personal because a home is personal. Of course, buying or selling a home is

Canterbury engineers are moving forward with plans to manufacture a new base isolation system that will make Kiwi houses safer in an earthquake.

Aprototype of the system was tested last year by a University of Canterbury team, led by Civil and Natural Resources Engineering Professor Tim Sullivan and postdoctoral fellow Tom Francis. The project team has now won $40,000 funding, from KiwiNet’s Emerging Innovator Programme, to develop their innovations.

Dr Francis says next year they plan to set up a company to supply the devices to housing developers, and oversee their construction.

“I’m developing another prototype - we’re calling it a phase two system - which will have even more cost-e ective construction than our original design.

“The testing we did of the original system using a shake table in the Structural Engineering Laboratory went even better than we expected and showed that the

device we’ve created does help prevent damage to residential houses in a large earthquake.”

The base isolation system is designed to help homeowners avoid costly repairs and stressful insurance claims in the event of a major earthquake.

Testing showed that it limits building deformation, preventing damage to walls and cladding, and keeps floor and roof accelerations low which helps to protect building contents.

Results showed the base isolation units were e ective and would have withstood the 2010-2011 Canterbury quakes and 2016 Kaikoura earthquakes (7.1 and 7.8 magnitude respectively), as well as an Alpine Fault scenario, without the room needing any repairs.

Professor Sullivan and Dr Francis’ goal is to keep the seismic system as low-cost as possible so it can be widely adopted by

homeowners around the country, making their houses significantly safer.

“We think what we’ve come up with will prevent damage, and it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. It also promises to reduce the disruption caused by a major quake, helping communities recover more quickly,”

Professor Sullivan says.

Base isolation systems are primarily used in commercial or civic buildings in New Zealand because they are usually expensive and require specialised engineering. The aim with the new residential system is to keep the total cost of manufacturing and installing the base isolation system to less than five percent of the total construction cost for a house.

distinction in detail

The amazing Avonside build achieved Overall Winner and Gold, in the Canterbury Regional category for the $2mil to $4mil new homes.

The director of John Garlick Builders, Kade Atkinson, project-managed alongside the company’s original founder.

“It was John’s very last house - and he placed a meticulous eye over it,” says Kade.

“It’s pretty unique - a handcrafted masterpiece by craftsman tradesmen. My team of builders, including Simon our foreman and the subcontractors were exceptional. Their attention to detail pulled o the intricate and technically complex geometric elements.”

The brief was for an eco and sustainable

home with e cient functioning. Thermally broken windows, and double walls provided extra sound and temperature insulation.

The tight, narrow section for the 282sqm South Architects design meant the majority of work was onsite. The cedar-framed natural and white-painted exterior and Gaboon plywood interior required forward planning to implement the bespoke detailing.

“We had to always be 10 steps ahead,” says Kade.

Constructed onsite were the main sectioned window, sweeping handconstructed cedar gable, and hand-cut Cedar fins providing structure, aesthetics and privacy.

“Angles are everywhere. The Corian stone

kitchen counter represents the home’s artistic geometric shapes of diamonds and points. And the base of the stairwell has become a feature in the bathroom.

“We’ve had many years as the family’s chosen builder. And they had a massive appreciation, towards the end, of the level of detail.

“It was one of our most technically complex and unique projects - with a huge all-round e ort over 18 months by everyone involved. Our expert team and clients’ long-standing history with us, worked so well together. They responded in creating a masterpiece.”

Thanks to Christchurch architectural builders Williams Elvidge, the home in Redcli s has a new lease on life, and a string of awards to acknowledge its stylish rebirth. The home won the Supreme Renovation category, the Bunnings Renovation $750,000 - $1.5 million category, and a Gold Award at the 2022 Master Builders Canterbury House of the Year Awards.

Like many homes across the city, it su ered major structural damage, making its restoration something to be celebrated. Judges say it is a “sophisticated, stylish

home”, faithfully brought back to its former glory, and a well-deserved winner of the Supreme Renovation category.

Renovations to the property have enhanced the post-earthquake integrity of the house, but have also transformed it into a showstopper. Masonry makes a striking feature and the sleek black front door welcomes visitors to the house, which enjoys the look and vibe of a boutique hotel.

The open-plan ground floor is all about easy living and comfort. Heated tiled flooring and a double-sided fireplace add warmth and style. The elegant wood-and-

white kitchen, created by Not Just Kitchens, is complemented by built-in bookcases in both living areas.

A serene palette and use of natural materials throughout the 303sqm house add timeless appeal.

Spilling from the living areas is a wide terrace with a plunge pool. There’s plenty of room here for relaxing, dining and taking in the panorama.

Frameless glass balustrades ensure sea and city vistas are uninterrupted.

Upstairs, the main bedroom suite is a sanctuary providing yet more opportunities to soak up the views.

heritage lives on

One of Christchurch’s increasingly rare heritage gems is looking stunning once more, having been rebuilt and restored to its original standards. 158 High Street proudly bears its name C.F. Cotter & Co in gold lettering above its key architectural feature: three sets of tall radius or arch windows.

The craftsmen responsible for these beautiful windows and ground floor doors can be found at Christchurch’s own TimberTru. Owner Tony van der Plas says, “this was a particularly enjoyable job because we had to recreate the windows from old photos, because the original windows had been destroyed.”

The windows vary in size, are traditional working “double hung sash” style, and crafted in pine and cedar. The wood has been painted in black for the exterior, and cream for the interior. “It took about 200 hours of work, but we loved every moment. It is an historic façade, and recreating those authentic heritage details is a passion for us,” says Tony. TimberTru won first prize for these heritage style windows in the local ‘Canterbury Master Joiners Awards 2022’ for ‘Best Window or Door’.

The Cotter’s building windows have been a highlight of a job recently, but the team are also busy with a new replica bay window for a farm house in Prebbleton. Highly skilled at creating beautiful joinery in every style, they have just completed sets of shelving and daybeds in a modernist style, for an architect’s home at Taylors Mistake.

Bespoke and specialist work is their niche. “Probably half of our business

is replacing or replicating character wooden windows and doors, and the other half is creating brand new kitchens, bathroom joinery and wardrobes in every style and era you could imagine,” says Tony.

The company’s website photos are a testament to the sheer range of joinery skill the team have under their fingertips.

Clients find their way to TimberTru through word of mouth. Tony and his team are destination joiners for both in the know private clients and builders. “For character homes, where owners are extending, or adding decks and requiring either French doors or bi-folds in wood, we are experts at matching existing windows and doors,” says Tony.

The team are always busy with kitchens, and the choice of materials is not limited to timber, “it’s completely up to you,” says Tony, “veneered timber, plywood, melamine, whatever suits your vision and budget.” The joinery isn’t where the service ends, they can organise benchtops, hardware and complete kitchen installations as well. Whether you are looking for a total renovation job or a small fix, join those in the know and talk to Tony at TimberTru.

Lyttelton’s façade is about to change again with a new mixed-use building planned for London St, on the site of the former Harbour Light Theatre, demolished after the 2010-2011 earthquakes.

The new building will feature a double-level commercial space on the ground floor and 10 one-bedroom apartments across the upper two levels.

The building is crowned with a rooftop terrace, o ering residents a space to connect, socialise and unwind.

Designed by Ignite Architects, the project is aimed at rekindling the spirit of the theatre’s legacy, while revitalising the area with spaces where communities could be cultivated.

Szymon Gozdzikowski, an Associate Director and Christchurch Studio Lead at Ignite says, “We spent

considerable time researching the street’s vibrant context, as the hub of Lyttelton. It was crucial to ensure 24 London Street was community-minded, with spaces that encourage residents to interact and o er seamless connections with the wider neighbourhood.”

Spaces to foster community, particularly in green or outdoor areas is a key design consideration. Up on the rooftop terrace, residents can socialise and enjoy incredible harbour views.

Drawing on modern co-living concepts, this area o ers a shared laundry and a place to grow food, complemented downstairs with a winter garden.
