Cereals such as rice, oats, wheat, corn and barley, as well as legumes like chickpeas, beans and lentils, are also sometimes grown into microgreens. Microgreens vary in taste, ranging from neutral to spicy, slightly sour or even bitter, depending on the variety. FROM THE EDITOR LYNDA PAPESCH

Water, water everywhere Anger and disappointment were predictable reactions to last month’s proposed Three Waters legislation decision, given the original overwhelming public and local government objections to it. The Government legislation NATIONAL MULTI-AWARD WINNERS 2013 - 2019

aims to establish four independent entities (known as Three Waters) to control drinking water, wastewater and stormwater. One entity will lump 21 South Island councils, including Christchurch, together. Local government and the wider community are not against restructuring, but object strenuously to the particular model for the delivery of three waters that the Government seems determined to push ahead with. Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel added her voice to the nationwide opposition, describing the proposed infrastructure model as ‘flawed’, ‘extremely disappointing’, and one that ‘robs communities of a voice’.

Objectors are already gearing up to fight against the legislation with a protest rally planned for Cathedral Square on November 14, to publicly debate and discuss ways of formalising a ‘No to 3 Waters’ movement. Future action plans may include a march on Wellington, starting from Invercargill. Christchurch has invested heavily in its three waters infrastructure, including a commitment to an unchlorinated drinking water supply, and an integrated stormwater system, Metropol Circulation through wetlands, floodplains and natural landscapes. Unless the Government is prepared to listen to the people, all that ratepayer money will be down the drain!

Sneak peek aerial spectacular

ith support from the Ministry of Culture and Heritage and Creative New Zealand, MOVEMENT OF THE HUMAN (MOTH) is developing the work in Christchurch before it premieres at the Aotearoa New Zealand Festival of the Arts in Wellington next year. BELLE is an exhibition style performance event that utilises and harnesses the skills of aerial specialists in collaboration with dance artists, performed with live music by Anita Clark, composed in collaboration with Eden and Jol Mulholland. Known for her innovative projects across Aotearoa and direction on the World of Wearable Art awards, director Malia Johnston collaborates with fellow artists Rowan Pierce (Performance Design), Jenny Ritchie (Aerial Choreography and Design) and an exceptional, international, all

female cast to bring this unique performance exhibition to Christchurch. BELLE takes its name from the French word libellule (dragonfly) and is also the name of the show’s unique purpose-built circus apparatus. The dragonfly is symbolic for transformation. In BELLE, transformation is created with sculptural light portals and AV where the performers appear and reappear as if by magic. Spaces are limited and bookings essential.

Mixing politics with family and fun Jasmine and James Gough

8 11 November, 2021 Metropol

One of Christchurch’s youngest city councillors, James Gough knew from an early age he wanted to help facilitate change for the better. He talks to Lynda Papesch about his path so far.

T

he city has always been home to James and he’s as passionate about it now as he was growing up. He remembers fondly that his mother was loving and supportive and his father always intentional “in not putting the same pressures on me that I suspect he felt were placed on him”. The young James made good friends and enjoyed sports, such as rugby and athletics, in addition to fun times holidaying in Akaroa. “I also spent my younger years pushing boundaries and occasionally overstepping them. Things aren’t too dissimilar nowadays I suppose,” he laughs. Nowadays he has his own family, wife Jasmine and three young children, aged four, two and three-months old. Time with them is precious, yet business – often city council business – takes up a large portion of his time and has done since he first stood for election in the Fendalton ward in 2010. Why stand for council? He had an enjoyable, fulfilling private sector role in property, working closely with his uncle

Antony Gough, yet he found that he wanted more. “I felt that if I were elected then it would be a privilege and a pleasure to help shape the city I loved and called home. “I felt I could add value and bring a useful skillset. Property and the private sector weren’t going to disappear anywhere. “In a way it felt like heads I win, tails I didn’t lose, when I first stood for council.” Since his initial election, James has been re-elected for the following three terms too, and still considers it a privilege and pleasure to represent the wishes of the people. With a business background and a people focus, he’s committed to positively contributing to Christchurch’s future for many years to come. On the family level being “a great father and husband” and also having fun are top of his list. “It’s important to me to have a lot of fun in whatever I’m doing, work with good people to achieve great outcomes, and I like to deliver public good through a commercial lens. “Most importantly, I love to laugh - even if it’s at myself,” he says.

Three Waters decision The Government’s recent decision to proceed with the Three Waters model is not something he is laughing at. The legislation aims to establish four independent entities (known as Three Waters) to control drinking, waste and storm water. One entity will control all of the 21 South Island councils, including Christchurch. “Frankly speaking, I find it pretty disgusting. “The reform is universally loathed by almost all New Zealanders for good reason, hence why it was rejected by 61 of the country’s 67 territorial authorities,” he says. “Such a brazen theft, in the face of what the vast majority want, is deeply troubling. “It doesn’t matter to me where someone sits on a political spectrum - the single most important aspect of the governmental landscape in New Zealand is the respect and preservation of our democracy. “The worst thing about the Government’s draconian Three Waters reform is that it genuinely threatens that.”

Leading with heart The Kate Sheppard Memorial Fund works to celebrate greater Christchurch’s proud tradition of female leadership. Established by The Christchurch Foundation, the fund honours the incredible women making positive change in our community. Normally three grants are distributed each year, but due to the generosity of a local family-run Christchurch business, Evotek Technologies, this year they were able to award a fourth grant. Metropol gets to know the 2021 winners.

Emily Cormack

Regenerate, Cultivate Christchurch

Emily Cormack is the intern and community coordinator at Cultivate Christchurch, and has a background in working with young people in mental health areas. She is passionate about supporting and helping youth explore their strengths and find their purpose. Regenerate is a programme run by Cultivate Christchurch that supports families to grow their kai. Cultivate Christchurch combines urban farming with youth development and community engagement, and provides employment and skills to youth. Emily’s work with Regenerate is making a true difference for young people in Ōtautahi. “Though it might sound strange, growing kai can totally do wonders for our mental health! Not only do we get the benefits of fresh produce and sunshine (vitamin D), but we also get a sense of connection to whenua and a reminder that we are all part of the ecology that exists around us. It’s great that with the help of the Kate Sheppard Memorial Fund, Regenerate can support communities to access urban gardening spaces and their positive impact on wellbeing.”

When she’s not on Christchurch Aunties duty, she is creating a similar programme for tāne at He Waka Tapu. “The acknowledgement of my work by the Christchurch Foundation means a lot to me as an individual and to my whanau. I get stuck in the dayto-day mahi of supporting others. This award has caused me to take a step back and look at my achievements with pride and made me think about how else I can use my skills and energy to make a positive impact on my community.”

One Mother to Another

Lois Hill and Romana Ibrahim Bike Bridge

One Mother to Another supports mums and carers in hospital who are going through a difficult time. The organisation provides gift bags to parents and carers in the Children’s Acute Assessment Unit (CAAU) and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU ward) at Christchurch Hospital, as well as the Neonatal Units in Nelson and Southland hospitals, proving 170 gift bags a month to those four wards. Joy Reid joined early on and now runs the initiative, and has been critical in the amazing growth and work they have achieved. “It’s such an honour to be recognised with three other incredible Christchurch wahine, especially in the name of such an iconic and inspiring New Zealander. It is a privilege to serve our community and to be able to help parents and carers (primarily mothers) in hospital with their children. I’m blown away to be acknowledged for our mahi, and the funds will go a long way in ensuring we can continue to provide support during such a difficult time. Thank you so much to the Christchurch Foundation for highlighting our mahi.”

Bike Bridge works with refugee and migrant women, teaching them to ride bikes, as well as road rules and bike safety. This supportive community helps women form strong connections, while also gaining the tools and skills to a free and independent means of transport. It also creates a safe space to practise English, build fitness and gain confidence in the community. “We are excited to be recognised by The Christchurch Foundation as a worthy recipient of a Kate Sheppard Memorial Fund grant. This will enable us to further extend our programme at Bike Bridge and get more women equipped and confident to ride a bike. The humble bike has long been an important tool in connecting and empowering women; during the days of the suffrage movement, it was used to help collect signatures for the 1893 petition. Today we are using it as a means to connect with women in our migrant and former refugee community and to empower them to ride. This facilitates free and independent transport across the city, for work, study and fun, as well as the building of friendships and community.”

The Christchurch Foundation thanks The George Hotel for the photo location, Craig and Hannah at Lightchasers for the beautiful photography, and The Canterbury Club for the venue for the High Tea Awards function. Metropol 11 November, 2021 13

Selling retirement units Buying or surrendering a retirement unit occupation right differs from the standard house sale or purchase. That’s where Sharon Bennett from RUS Consultancy comes in.

W

ith a law degree and legal executive qualification from the United Kingdom and experience in handling New Zealand retirement village unit settlements, Sharon knows that for a resident, their family, or power of attorney, vacating a retirement village unit can be daunting. “A solicitor isn’t actually needed for every transaction. I am a more cost-effective alternative for your transfer or surrender, and I can do as much or as little of the work as you require,” says Sharon. Sharon provides three services, firstly a guidance service where the client handles their own surrender with Sharon’s guidance. The other two services are management services where Sharon handles the transaction in its entirety on behalf of the client either when they transfer to another unit, or no longer require a retirement unit. Legislation requires a solicitor, explains the legal agreement to purchase, which Sharon arranges at no extra cost. Sharon works with both the solicitor and the village statutory supervisor, to complete the surrender of right to occupy. www.rusconsultancy.com

T

he Golden Bearing opened at Christchurch Art Gallery on October 30 and runs until January 30 next year. The golden tree of no particular species, is a deliberately universal work that will mean something a little different to each person who visits. Felicity Milburn, Lead Curator at the Gallery, says The Golden Bearing sits somewhere between fantasy and hyperrealism. “It’s a golden tree growing indoors, so it is obviously artificial, but the artist’s careful inclusion of small details makes it unexpectedly convincing, from the knobbly undulations of the roots and trunk to the delicate leaves, which are light enough to move slightly in a breeze,” Ms Milburn says. Artist Reuben Paterson (Ngāti Rangitihi, Ngāi Tūhoe, Tūhourangi, Scottish) was born in Auckland in 1973. He is best known for working with glitter, which he uses to create spellbinding surfaces, and to echo the dynamic movement of light in nature. Paterson’s paintings, sculptures and time-based works often incorporate Māori concepts and motifs, and references to the natural world. The Golden Bearing stands 4.5 metres high and was created by hand using more than 200 kilograms of fibreglass, gold paint and glitter. First created in 2013, discussions about bringing the work to Christchurch began shortly after the March 15, 2019, terror attacks, with Paterson wanting to offer “a little piece of joy” to the city. “On a fundamental level, trees provide shelter, and we wanted to create a welcoming, family-friendly space where our visitors can experience something a bit magical, and where children can enjoy storytelling sessions under its leaves, or even post a picture to Instagram at #glittertree,” Ms Milburn says. “The use of glitter will conjure up showbiz for some, but it’s also an effect found throughout nature – in the sparkle of wet sand, or the glistening frost on winter grass. That tension between what’s natural and what’s constructed is something Reuben has often worked

with, not least because it offers a way to think about colonisation, and how ideas and belief systems from other places were imposed on the natural environment,” Ms Milburn says. “In Aotearoa, trees contribute to our sense of identity in many different ways. In Te Ao Māori, they are connectors between human and spiritual worlds, with their roots grounding them in the earth as they reach for the sky. In Māori cosmology, it was Tāne, the forest god,

who pushed apart his earth mother Papatūānuku and sky father Ranginui to create Te Ao Mārama – room and light for people. Paterson’s work plays in the space between all these ideas; linking nature and invention, reality and illusion, the past and possibility.” Under-the-tree storytelling sessions and other events will take place over the duration of the exhibition. Keep an eye on www.christchurchartgallery.org.nz for details.

A hidden antiquities gem One of Christchurch’s hidden gems, the Teece Museum of Classical Antiquities, has celebrated a milestone with its 50,000th visitor since opening in 2017.

T

hat’s roughly the same number of people it took to fill ancient Rome’s Colosseum. Part of the Arts Centre University of Canterbury campus, the museum houses more than three thousand years of human history through an amazing collection of artefacts from

Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Near Eastern cultures. Visiting Professor Andrew Stewart, of the University of California Berkeley, says; “After Sydney’s Nicholson Museum, the [Teece Museum] Logie Collection is the finest Greek and Roman collection in Australasia.”

Current exhibition MYTHS AND MORTALS: Life in Ancient Times Meet the monstrous, mighty and mythical characters of the ancient world in the latest exhibition at the UC Teece Museum. The ancient Greeks and Romans came from all walks of life, some barely survived in slavery while others led rich and fulfilling lives. Whether they were at the bottom or the top of the pecking order, the Greeks and Romans formed strong communities and shared a variety of cultures and beliefs, just as we do today. ‘Myths and Mortals’ features an array of amazing objects – marble sculptures, elaborate vases, jewellery, armour and more. These artefacts capture the epic myths and stories, the rise and fall of empires, the glorious competitions in sport and war, and the everyday lives of people in ancient times. What about Blockchain? The New Zealand Government is currently reviewing the potential for a sovereign digital currency, as are many other countries around the world.

A

mong those in the spotlight is Blockchain, a mature technology that, while fresh to New Zealand, is growing fast. Globally job listings for crypto and blockchain have been skyrocketing, growing 118 percent year-on-year in recent months. Major New Zealand firms are collaborating around a shared blockchain logistics platform, the Trust Alliance, to create a trusted digital network for primary producers to easily share data, says BlockchainNZ community manager Alison Mackie. Kiwi blockchain firms have raised more than $200 million in funding so far this year and one of the best has been Easy Crypto, she says. The company raised $17 million, possibly a New Zealand record for a start-up first round. Easy Crypto has recorded more than $1 billion in sales, with platform user numbers multiplying

almost five times in the last 12 months. “The significance of Easy Crypto is that it is a pioneering crypto exchange that has placed New Zealand on the map as a leader in the cryptocurrency space. “It is an easy platform for users to manage their own New Zealand dollar that meets the regulatory requirements of New Zealand law and banking taxation. “Easy Crypto has built a reputation of being the most trusted exchange platforms in New Zealand, where people can buy and sell cryptocurrencies and keep track of the market. “They do not hold private key or store funds, ensuring that people have full control of their own money. “Anyone can get into cryptocurrency and utilise it as an investment opportunity as well as a digital currency. It holds the same freedom and autonomy of cash and can be seen as a personal back-up to people’s private money,” says Mackie.

How it works: Blockchain is a specific type of database. It differs from a typical database in the way it stores information; blockchains store data in blocks that are then chained together. As new data comes in, it is entered into a fresh block. Once the block is filled with data it is chained onto the previous block, which makes the data chained together in chronological order. Different types of information can be stored on a blockchain but the most common use so far has been as a ledger for transactions. In Bitcoin’s case, blockchain is used in a decentralised way so that no single person or group has control — rather, all users collectively retain control. Decentralised blockchains are immutable, which means that the data entered is irreversible. For Bitcoin, this means that transactions are permanently recorded and viewable to anyone. Flower lovers rejoice. It’s paeony season and for the second year running these revered blooms – long known to symbolise compassion – are the floral heroes of a special fundraising campaign, ‘Peonies with a Purpose’.

E

ach bouquet or bunch of paeonies bought from participating retailers until November 14, will see $1 donated to the Mental Health Foundation (MHF). The funds will help MHF to look after the wellbeing of the 580,000 Kiwis who will need its help this year. According to a recent Ipsos study commissioned by MHF, 25 percent of all New Zealanders currently have poor levels of mental and emotional wellbeing. Many have ‘battle fatigue’ brought on by 18 months of living with the challenges of Covid-19. The pandemic has been one of the biggest challenges to collective mental health in several generations, according to MHF chief executive Shaun Robinson. “Kiwis by and large have faced this challenge by looking after each other and getting through it together,” he says. “Sometimes it’s hard to know how to help. That’s where Peonies with a Purpose comes in. As a charitable collaboration between Feel Good with Flowers and the NZ Paeony Society this campaign has at its heart, spreading joy and kindness, and as its purpose, supporting mental health.” He says demand for MHF resources remains high as Covid continues to increase

anxiety levels and challenge mental wellbeing for many. “Generosity is vital for the MHF to keep pace with the growth in demand for its services, with fundraising allowing us to provide information, guidance and develop innovative programmes across the board. “Lockdowns have reduced our ability to raise funds through events, and we’re extremely grateful for those in the community who continue to find ways to give,” he adds. Thai-Anh Cooper from Feel Good with Flowers says spring is perfect for spreading that ‘feel good factor’ through Peonies with a Purpose. “We chose paeonies for this campaign because New Zealand-grown paeonies are among the best in the world. Year after year, these gorgeous blooms generate phenomenal interest and pleasure for so many. “This campaign allows us to collaborate with NZ Paeony Society in a positive and effective way and give back to those who really need support.” For a list of participating retailers visit www.feelgoodwithflowers.co.nz/ peonieswithapurpose Metropol 11 November, 2021 25

Healing hair loss Melissa Pireni works from the heart when she helps women dealing with hair loss because she’s been there herself.

H

er services at Savanna Hair Solutions are all about helping women come out happy and healed on the other side of hair loss, just as she did. “After suffering for 14 years, I realised hair loss doesn’t have to define you. I share the process I went through, and tell them they don’t have to go through those years of emotional suffering.” Melissa particularly has a heart for young women suffering hair loss, “I’ve had 14-year-olds who are so stressed by life that they

lose their hair. It’s heartbreaking.” The salon is now in a bigger location, with a private area that’s a safe space for women to go through their healing journey. “I call it the healing oasis,” says Melissa. ”It’s also soundproof and there’s a lot of crying and laughing that goes on in there!” And bubbly Melissa does laugh a lot. Holistic approach to beauty Acupuncture is an ancient healing tool that reaches back thousands of years and is an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine.

F

acial acupuncture is an extension of traditional acupuncture. It’s said to naturally help make the skin look younger, smoother, and all-around healthier. Principal Practitioner at My Beauty Clinic, Sophie Lau, is a Doctor of Chinese Medicine and a registered acupuncturist who provides bespoke facial acupuncture treatments at the clinic. Facial acupuncture is a safe, non-surgical approach to transform the appearance of skin, leaving it radiant and rejuvenated. It addresses not only signs of aging, but also the skin’s overall health Benefits attributed to facial acupuncture include hormone balancing, puffiness reduction, improving sun damage pigmentation, and lifting and toning of sagging muscles. The application of needles at specific points delivers nutrients and oxygen to skin cells while nourishing skin from the inside out. The needles also stimulate fibroblast cells within the skin’s dermis layer and encourage collagen production. Facial acupuncture helps improve elasticity, thereby minimising fine lines and wrinkles. Facial acupuncture is an encompassing, holistic approach to healing, helping address not only signs of aging, but also other ailments, such as anxiety and digestive issues. Skin shield on

The more we learn about the importance of everyday sun protection, the more wonderful products are being created to keep our precious skin shielded from harmful rays.

Bondi Sands, Hydra SPF 50+ Face Fluid

Bondi Sands, Sunny Daze Hydrating SPF 50 Moisturiser

I

t is recommended you wear face sunscreen every day, even the gloomy ones or days you are mostly indoors. Why? Because even behind the clouds and through glass windows, harmful sun rays can still be causing damage to your skin. While sun exposure is a known cause of skin cancer, it is a cause for a multitude of other things, including pigmentation, premature aging, and discoloration. Sun protection products have come a long way since

Dr Dennis Gross, Daily Defence UV Shield SPF 50

Mecca Ultra Violette, Emma Cosmetica, Queen Screen Lewishham, To Save Face Luminising Sun Skinshield SPF 50+ Serum SPF 50+ Daycream SPF 30

the classic thick and oily sunscreen the family would take to the beach, lathering the white paint all over. Now brands are formulating face sunscreen into lightweight creams, mists, and serums that can be worn under makeup, and without that classic ‘sunscreen smell’ we all remember. Some products are best suited to different skin types, so you don’t need to undo your hardworking skincare routine to add that layer of muchneeded protection.

The best sunscreen is the one you are going to use every day. However here are a few important things to look out for: Broad-spectrum, which protects against UVA and UVB rays SPF 30 or higher, especially if you are outdoors Water-resistance if you will be exercising or swimming

Facial like no other Global lockdowns introduced us to Zoom, the essential tool for face-to-face connection, but alongside its benefits came an increasing awareness of our physical appearance onscreen.

T

his spiked an increasing interest in beauty treatments, but beauty treatments that were non-invasive, less painful and more natural. Beauty company Environ got on board and developed the facial Focus On Filler. This sensational facial, which is described as a “facial like no other”, is available at beauty salon All About You. Focus On Filler is a 30-minute treatment that addresses the appearances of lines, wrinkles, skin laxity and loss of facial volume. Dr Des Fernandes, Founder and Scientific Director of Environ, says that with the aging process, skin loses fat in the dermis as well as hyaluronic acid. “What many people need is to improve the cushion of fat in the skin and boost the hyaluronic acid status to make it look like the skin has been re-inflated.” Focus On Filler can be undertaken on its own or added to an Environ Essential Facial with Electro-Sonic DF Technology, which diffuses up to 40 times more of the active ingredients to the skin. Building stronger, Dynamic Spines Whether back pain strikes after a sports game where you took one for the team, whether it has crept up on you with the passing years, or whether you simply reached for the can opener in your own kitchen and something went pop, you’ll know that back pain is debilitating - casting a cloud over every aspect of daily life.

T

he team of physiotherapists at Muscle People can help by working with you to create the core strength that is the foundation of fitness without injury, and a pain-free back. To strengthen the core, which in turn supports the strength and healing of the spine, the team has developed a programme of therapeutic exercise called Dynamic Spines. Neck, upper and lower back pain as well as core and postural weaknesses are all addressed within the programme. The length of the programme is bespoke to you, specifically tailored to ensure that you reach your back health goals. Before enrolling you will be assessed

by one of the physiotherapists to ensure that the classes are going to be the best approach for your issues. Limited numbers mean you receive higher oneon-one attention from the

physiotherapist instructors within each class as you work to your individual diagnosis and ability, but you also get to share the challenges and fun within a group setting. As well as the medical and

wellbeing benefits, there is an enjoyable social aspect to Dynamic Spines. Classes can include pilatesfocused exercises and working out on the Oov – a fun, odd looking piece of equipment that activates core stabilising muscles while gently extending the spine. You’ll also receive exercises to do at home. Because the courses are designed and instructed by physiotherapists, they are available as treatment through the ACC system. Muscle People receive referrals from back specialists where core strengthening is required, and for post-operative rehabilitation as well as private clients who want to address pain, mobility and reverse a gradual decline in core strength. The classes are available at Muscle People’s three clinics in the city, at Bishopdale and at Wigram Skies, and they also run at different times throughout the day so there is a location and time to suit. To find out more about Dynamic Spines or for everything else physio, call Muscle People on 0800 027 194 or visit the website. www.musclepeople.co.nz Metropol 11 November, 2021 39

cuisine Dough glorious dough Homemade bread is not only a delight to eat, but a joy to make. It takes some time and care, but the reward is always worth it. A good dough can become many things, including pizza bases, flatbreads, roti, or a classic loaf, the options are endless.

T

here are two crucial steps nearly all dough recipes will call for. Get this right, and you will be enjoying a light, fluffy and delicious end result.

Kneading Once you have combined your dough ingredients, it is time to knead. Kneading is the process that works the gluten in the flour and distributes the gases that develop from the yeast. The gas is what makes the nice, spongy holes in bread. Ensure you have enough flour on your hands and the benchtop, as the dough will be sticky. There are different styles of kneading, and it doesn’t matter which you choose. As long as you are working the dough, pushing and folding it, until it is smooth and springy.

Proofing After kneading, it is time for patience. Proofing is when you let the dough rise and during this process, the sugar or carbohydrate in the flour is ‘eaten’ by the yeast. This step is the key to having a lovely soft bread with a good rise. Not proofing for long enough will result in a very dense, flat loaf. Some dough will need a second proof. A good rule to remember with most dough is that the longer it has to rise the better, you don’t want to cut this time short.

Instructions

1. 2.

Position the oven rack in the upper 1/3 portion of your oven. Preheat the oven to 260 deg C for at least 30 minutes before baking, preferably 1-2 hours ahead. If you have a pizza stone, start preheating it.

3.

On a lightly floured surface, push/roll the pizza dough out until it is pretty thin (about a 30-35cm circle). Place the pizza dough on a lightly oiled sheet pan. Spread the tomatoes and pesto over the dough. Sprinkle on the shredded cheese and add the prosciutto.

4.

Slide into the preheated oven and bake for 10 minutes, rotate the pizza, and bake another 3-5 minutes or until the crust is golden and the cheese has melted. Meanwhile, toss together the rocket, olive oil, parmesan, salt, and pepper. Top the pizza with rocket and basil.

Awesome asparagus Straight from the soil or straight from a jar, asparagus is delicious either way.

T

asty spring asparagus is jumping with flavour, and you can’t get much more local than the spears grown at Christopher and Jenny Gray’s farm at Motukārara. Approaching legendary status locally, the asparagus is destined for bottling for the export market. It will be bottled on-site, in locally sourced white vinegar or apple cider vinegar. For as we know, it’s the preserved kind that makes the best

asparagus rolls. “We’re just in the final stages of getting the bottling outfit ready to go,” says Christopher. Their high-grade, sodium-rich soil gets the credit for the divine flavour of the three asparagus varieties they’re harvesting right now. We all know the traditional green variety, but if you haven’t tried the others, Christopher says the white is milder and creamier, while the purple can be sweeter

Dine out in style Eliza’s Manor, on Bealey Avenue, is now also home to an exciting new restaurant, Miro at the Manor.

O

ne of Christchurch’s historical Victorian gems, Eliza’s Manor was recently purchased by well-known restaurateurs Francesca Voza and James Sumner, who opened the new restaurant there in early October. Since arriving in New Zealand in 2010, Francesca and husband James have spread their passion for food and hospitality across the South Island, starting with a successful pizza food truck, and expanding to open and run multiple restaurants and bars. They operate Miro out of one of Christchurch’s other historic gems, a terracotta-pink art deco building, and

now its new offshoot Miro at the Manor. Francesca says the success of Miro, blending the unique atmosphere of a bygone era with a sensational modern seasonal menu, encouraged the new venture, created to preserve, amplify and share the spirit of Eliza’s Manor. With eight guest rooms, and in-house dining, Eliza’s Manor successfully blends past with present. Heading the restaurant teams are Executive Chef Liam Summers, Head Chef Cameron Woodhouse, and Head Chef at Miro, Eeva Torvinen. Visit www.elizas.co.nz

Liam Summers

Liam Summers

Executive chef of Eliza’s Manor and Miro. Born and raised in Christchurch, Liam comes from an art, garden and food focused family. Prior to Miro, he was sous chef at Pegasus Bay Winery for five years. He loves the produce Canterbury has to offer and how Christchurch is developing its own food scene. “The people in Canterbury are now so open to tasting different flavours and produce, as a chef it’s so great to see.”

Cameron Woodhouse

Cameron Woodhouse

Head Chef Eliza’s Manor. Cameron’s career began studying catering in Scotland where he worked in luxury hotels as a pastry chef, until a move to Queenstown in 2015. He enjoys experimenting with unusual flavour combinations and ingredients with a strong influence to British fine dining. He previously worked at Inati, with a focus on modern European-style food, working closely with the changing seasons.

Eeva Torvinen

Head Chef, Miro. Originally from Finland, Eeva has gathered 13 years of culinary experience working from French-style bistros to Scandinavian fine dining. She came to New Zealand at the beginning of 2016 and has spent the past three years as a head chef at The Monday Room in Christchurch. Stocking up for Christmas

Johnnie Walker Black A masterful blend of single malt and grain whiskies from across Scotland. Aged for a least 12 years. Drink it neat or with ice. My grandfather’s favourite whisky so it has to be good.

1.75 Litre $169.99

The Glenturret 12Yrs Notes of dried fruits and spices from European oak harmonise beautifully with vanilla and caramel tones from American oak, aged in a small number of carefully selected casks. Sprinkles of ginger with barley sugar, rich oak, sultanas and cinnamon with a soft creamy finish.

With the festive season upon us, Metropol writer Nicholas Henare reminisces and also looks ahead to some of the special whisky treats at Big Daddy’s Liquor.

700ml $119.99

I

have memories of visiting my grandparents on Christmas day. Along with the usual festive cheer, myself and the cousins were allowed blackberry nip, a lower alcohol liqueur. My grandfather would sit in his old recliner and drink whisky, Johnnie Walker to be exact, and make sure we didn’t destroy the lounge while the ladies got some peace and quiet outside. Bill Lumsden, head distiller for the beautiful Glenmorangie range once told me that, “a good whisky can be a great whisky shared with friends, but a great whisky will make for an exceptional experience.” Celebrate with those closest to you this Christmas. You deserve it.

Parklands 03 383 2478 60 Queenspark Drive,

Glenmorangie The Tayne Kept in Amontillado Sherry casks, you end up with a wonderful spicy, citrus peel and toasty oak. Stories of Spanish Galleons on the coast inspired this beautiful release from one of the world’s best distillers. A sophisticated whisky for the discerning palate.

Sexton Irish Whisky “You have a single life, so drink a single malt,“ is what Sexton say about their malt. I don’t know how they know I’m single, but it’s a great Irish whiskey. An American single malt using Irish malted barley, it is America’s number one selling Irish single malt.

home Seasonal style Tis nearly the season for tinsel and pine, although traditional Christmas decorations don’t fit everyone’s style.

A

dding a bit of festive flair to your home doesn’t need to mean classic red, green and gold decorations hung on every possible surface. Check out Metropol’s tips for creating a more stripped back, modern Christmas look.

1

Use natural shades instead of loud reds and greens. Earthy browns and coppers, deep leafy greens, and soft neutrals are great alternatives. Use linen in colours like beige or caramel as table runners or at the base of the Christmas tree to add a soft, modern look to the space.

2

Instead of a traditional Christmas tree, decorate a rustic piece of driftwood or long pine branch. These can be suspended horizontally, or leaned up against a wall. Get creative and have some fun with stripped back tree alternatives, decorating with a bit of glitz will really bring it to life.

3

Less is sometimes best, especially if you are wanting more of a modern Christmas look. Choose a few key features, such as a tree, a wreath and some lighting and just focus on those elements. This will create less clutter, and look cohesive and intentional throughout the home.

4

Instead of traditional fairy lights, use candles to light the home in the evening. These could be anything from tea lights along mantel pieces, to funky coloured or shaped candles to feature in the kitchen, living, bathroom or bedrooms. For an extra touch, opt for pine or gingerbread scents.

Sweet deco dreams Curved or square, multicoloured or in your favourite hue, coloured headboards can make a stylish statement in a bedroom. They anchor the bed, drawing the eye in and adding a vibrant dimension in colour and shape.

T

he bonus of painting a headboard is that you aren’t restricted to using one colour. Just ensure it ties in with your bedroom’s existing palette. The deco-style curves of the panels seen in this headboard, echo the lines of the bed. Such circular forms add to the comforting feel of the room.

For your starting point, choose your Resene colours. Seek inspiration within the room itself. Look at your bed linen, artwork or curtains for ideas, even if it’s a hint of colour on a bedspread pattern or curtain print. Once you have an idea of what you like, give yourself time to get to know the colours. Visit

your local Resene ColorShop and choose some testpots. Select variations of that colour and paint two coats each onto A2 card. Place them on the wall in mixed combinations, seeing how the colours change in the natural light. Treat it like a mood board, analysing how your emotional response to the

colours alters over time. With the gentle neutral of Resene Merino in place, work on this visual warmth with multiple shades. (From left): Resene Tide in its complex beige carries plenty of character, the ideal partner next to the rich yellow of Resene Tussock; the dusky grey-blue of Resene Nepal is a welcomed cooling hue. It balances beautifully next to the romantic brown of Resene Americano; while the soft ochre of Resene Smooth Operator blends in beautifully. The relationship between most of the colours is that of warm, earthy neutrals, but it’s not too perfect – Resene Nepal breaks up the earthy tones, without making too much of a statement. Layers of colour are essential in this bedroom, so remember, when it comes to painting your headboard, you’ve only got yourself to please. Bring in a colour you adore and add shades to it. Break it up with a surprise – a complementary hue. Rest assured, it will provide you with dreamy results.

Get inspired at your local Resene ColorShop, www.resene.co.nz/colorshops. 56 11 November, 2021 Metropol

Balanced symmetry updates this Christchurch kitchen with warmer aesthetics and sleeker functionality – another pristine DJ Hewitt Builders project. A white-upon-white kitchen was all the rage 13 years ago when the owners’ Waitakiri home was built. Now transformed with wood-toned luxury and black negative detailing, inviting is the feeling for the hub of the home. The textured tiles in a herringbone-design surrounding the two windows, were thought up by client. Tara Hewitt, the interior design consultant, incorporated innovative ideas such as the black swan-neck faucet accentuated by chrome taps, with instant gas hot water. She attended meetings with Grant from Sydenham Joinery and clients to tie in the theme. Soft-closing drawers with flush shark-nose and end cap handles look sleek. LED lighting illuminates the floating shelves and island, and vintage pedant lights set a scene, where original polished-concrete flooring blends perfectly. The walnut-laminate cabinetry finish is hard to tell apart from the

GEOFF CURLE PLUMBING

real thing, with its irregular grain that’s textured to the touch. The scullery, once busy with white shelving, now features a practical sleek black counter top, and the same walnut solid shelving above. The homeowners expressed great appreciation for the highend subcontractors. Nothing seemed a hassle. They said the same high standard could not have been achieved had they organised it all themselves. Project manager Craig was at the top of his game, and under Daryl Hewitt’s commission, all the long-standing contractors completed the job to the respected builder’s high expectations. Leaving a clean kitchen work site each day, with little interruption to daily life, they found the journey just so easy and streamlined. It was a pleasure to be given the same elite customer service, as they would for a full house build. Daryl arrived with a bottle of bubbles and flowers for the kitchen table to celebrate, after his eagle-eyed final seal of approval.

O

Expertly working together “That feather duster isn’t just a microphone you know”. It’s not the advice you want to hear, but it’s the kind of thing you should be hearing if your real estate agent is up to the mark.

nce you decide to sell a house, you want it sold quickly and for the best possible price. A key factor is the expert knowledge and advice of your agent. Hayden McKenzie, Managing Director at Ngatahi Real Estate says, “Always choose someone very straightforward, who believes in telling you what you need to know, rather than boosting your ego.” Also stressing the importance of integrity, “Their reputation in the business must be impeccable, and you can check this out by asking around and requesting to speak to past clients.” Like most businesses, real estate sales people can focus on volume, or they can take a bespoke full-service, hands-on approach. “You want to choose the latter,” says Hayden, “If the agent isn’t interested in you, your reasons for the life change, and what you hope to achieve with the sale of your home, move on quickly and don’t look back. Ngatahi means ‘together’, and we believe personal connection is everything if you want to achieve all of your goals.” www.ngatahirealestate.nz

Go big, and stay home Owning a big TV requires a commitment of space, but being able to project onto a wall or portable screen makes more sense for those movie nights or sporting events. Ian Knott checks out one option for some big screen heaven.

E

ven outdoor movie nights are becoming increasingly popular, with friends and family gathering on beanbags while a favourite movie is projected onto some white sheets or painted wall. Projectors come in many shapes and sizes, and there’s one to suit any budget, but as with most electronics, you get what you pay for when it comes to quality and features. BenQ is the number one 4K projector brand worldwide and their TK850i Wireless Streaming Projector delivers a multitude of features and premium picture quality

that’s hard to beat. With built-in Android TV, Google Play Store, Amazon Prime, and Apple AirPlay and Chromecast compatibility you can stream all your favourite content in 4K UHD at more than 100”, with great audio too. Or, if you’re so inclined, (and why wouldn’t you be?), you can plug in your preferred gaming console into the projector’s double HDMI ports and enjoy some huge-screen gaming goodness. The TK850i is clever enough to compensate for varying angles so that your picture is alway straight rather than a

rhombus, and the 3000 ANSI Lumens and 30,000:1 contrast ratio ensures ultimate picture clarity in all viewing conditions. Replacement projector bulbs can be expensive, but with 4000 hours in normal mode, 10,000 in Eco and 15,000 hours in SmartEco, you’ll enjoy many movies over many years before you need to think about replacements. At a shade under $4000, the TK850i is definitely an extravagance, but looking at the hours of family bonding time you’ll get out of it, I’d call it an extravagance well worth consideration.

BenQ 4K HDR Wireless Streaming Projector TK850i True 4K UHD with 8.3m pixels Built-in Chromecast, Android TV, Google Play, AirPlay, wireless streaming, and HDMI input Project up to and over 100 inches with incredible brightness and contrast Enjoy thousands of hours with the long-life light source.

Lives are Being Changed as Property Values Soar. Have you ever just stopped in your tracks, so astonished at something you couldn’t understand it, let alone explain what was really happening? In the current market, I find myself in that realm weekly and while it’s exhilarating on one hand, it’s deeply unusual on the other - and it defies belief. The property market, this market, the prices, the scale, the desperation, tears and joy. Every human emotion is being played out. I’ve seen it all and not just in our own auction rooms but everywhere that property is being transacted. To provide context and analysis, we review as a business - and a sales team - every auction (because that is where the magic is occurring) that we conduct over the calendar year. With well over seven hundred auctions, both expected and currently booked, it’s a big subset from which to deduce market findings. And the findings so far include standouts, this week and every week over the past four months. There’s the property in Burnside with three bidders that, after the announcement it was to be sold at $780,000, achieved $808,000 with additional bidding, or a 2-bedroom unit on Wilsons Road that had its auction brought forward at $435,000 and once it was announced as being 'on the market

Join the bestin the business! Are you curious about a career in real estate?

and selling' reached $700,000 due to the pressure of five bidders. Then there was a Clyde Road property which was announced on the market on auction day for $1,120,000 and then sold at $1,425,000. To be fair, I could recount example after example of similarly exceptional results, as well as glowing testimonials from people who have felt their lives are now altered. So could this all change and what would preempt that? Increased interest rates are already occurring, more listings are coming to the market as owners hope that they too will enjoy the “Lotto win” sales figures experienced by others, and the government is legislating to allow for higher density infill housing throughout the city. So, yes to changes, but whether these alter the current picture remains uncertain. As the top real estate expert (C.B) says "There might be a small clip". Let's see shall we? In the meantime, I’m doing the best I can to hold tight and add value for owners and support for our purchasers. It's busy out there!

Food for the soul WORDS LYNDA PAPESCH

Whether it’s a few pots on the balcony, a small patch or an extensive garden, everyone can experience the joy of gardening.

T

he benefits of digging deep in the dirt are well documented and many Kiwis have moved back to growing not just beautiful flowers, but also their own vegetable patches. Last month’s National Gardening Week encouraged people to grow-an-extrarow of vegetables to share

with neighbours, community pantries, food banks and other local food donation agencies. Yates National Gardening Week aimed to foster a love of gardening with a focus on growing not only plants but friendships, good health, strong communities and closer connections with nature.

Gardening is an all-year-round hobby and one where age, area and ability need not be a hindrance. Plant a few of your favourite herbs in matching pots in a sunny kitchen spot. Or experiment with growing your own microgreens. Try companion planting; popping a few lettuces among the hostas and hellebores. Or a few cherry tomatoes in hanging baskets with petunias and violas. Plant vegetables and flowers in small troughs and raised garden beds. They’re easier to maintain and easier to reach if higher up. Grow from cuttings. This is a cost-effective way to grow buxus hedges for instance. Hydrangeas also take well from cuttings and can be rooted in water. Check out what is in season. Buy seedlings or sprout your own. A warm sunny spot is ideal, and the likes of beans sprout well on a wet bed of cotton wool.

Go green & micro Fresh, colourful, tasty, healthy and versatile. What more could you ask for growing right there in your kitchen? Yes we’re talking microgreens.

T

hese tiny sprouts of goodness pack a nutritious punch as a garnish or an ingredient in all manner of dishes. You can enjoy microgreen versions of arugula, chives,

1. Microgreens prefer room temperature, so keep them on the bench or windowsill.

2. Once sprouted they’re good to go. Cut with scissors 1-2cm from the roots.

Cereals such as rice, oats, wheat, corn and barley, as well as legumes like chickpeas, beans and lentils, are also sometimes grown into microgreens. Microgreens vary in taste, ranging from neutral to spicy, slightly sour or even bitter, depending on the variety. The most popular varieties are produced using seeds from the following plant families:

aster Joiners belong to one of the world’s oldest trades, dating back to the 12th and 15th centuries. Most of us have heard of Master Builders and Master Plumbers, but Master Joiners are perhaps not so well-known. A joiner is a skilled tradesperson who works with timber and board products to create constructions such as kitchens, doors, windows, staircases and counters. It is an area of professionalism and craftsmanship. Joiners are represented in New Zealand by the Master Joiners

Federation which has 10 regional associations, including one in Canterbury. As a group they aim to promote the Master Joiners brand encouraging customers to use joiners who are masters of their trade, producing high standards of workmanship. Membership of the Federation has benefits not only for customers, but for the joiners themselves. It bestows credibility and the interaction and sharing of information with fellow joiners is invaluable to all involved.

Excellence Award, Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award, APL Sustainable Excellence Award, and Kitchen Excellence Award. The judges say that this year there’s real diversity among the year Top 100 houses, which include 24 from the Canterbury region. “There’s a home built out of on-site quarried schist in Queenstown, an ultra-modern box style home in Auckland, a lighthouse inspired bach in Timaru, and homes made out of the most high-tech and sustainable materials we have available.” The judges also commented the impact Covid-19 has had on the homes they are judging, particularly with the more recent renovations. “Since our first lockdown last year, we are seeing more people pay more attention to their homes and creating a space they can not only live in but enjoy. We are seeing the integration of more smart systems in the home, as well as homes offices or working spaces. “Energy efficiency and sustainable homes is another trend that has been front of mind for homeowners and builders throughout the country.” The awards also recognise the building and construction sectors’ contribution to the New Zealand economy. Kelly says, “We play a vital role in New Zealand. Every $1 million spent on house building supports $2.6 million across the wider economy. But our greatest source of pride is that we are building the quality homes that Kiwis will live in for generations to come.”

Award-winning swamp dwelling A Christchurch ‘Swamp Dwelling’ in Opawa has won the 2021 ADNZ Resene SUPREME Architectural Design Award.

D

esigned by Ben Brady of Linetype Architectural, the unique 150sqm home is built opposite a river in a flood management area, exemplifying what is possible on an unforgiving, uninspiring site with no views, no bush and no heritage The ADNZ judges were wowed by the project, saying it was a building where the more you keep looking, the more you find. “There is nothing exceptional about the site to exploit, there is no stunning view, no native bush, no flowing stream, and no heritage setting, no inspiration

is present. Instead, this unforgiving site presents two direct difficulties – a long thin plan and a high ground water level. “Yet, what has been produced here is an outstanding design. The extended gable to the front creates a sheltered link to the exterior landscaped areas; and a finely crafted folded perforated Corten screen creates a complementary screening and sheltering element to the front deck and elevation. A stepped deck softens the height of the exterior elevation inside and throughout, the design is exquisitely detailed and consistent. “When you peel back the engaging and pleasing skin of this building, underneath you find the solid bones of a set of well-understood, eco-friendly technologies and design solutions. Out of the swamp has risen a sophisticated but unassuming beauty,” they said. Brady’s fondly referenced ‘Swamp Dwelling’ was built for a retired couple looking to downsize maintenance commitments while also building a house tailored to their specific needs. They wanted easy accessibility, good building performance, an art studio, motorcycle workshop, a bedroom and a guest suite, plus good outdoor living. Challenges with the site included a required floor level of 1.4m above ground, tough rules on earthworks and filling, a narrow lot, and a generous road setback from the river. In addition to Brady’s SUPREME award win, nine other New Zealand designers were awarded National ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards, including Craig South of South Architects, Greg Young and Andy McLeod of Young Architects, Mitchell Coll of Coll Architecture and Pippin Wright-Stow of F3 Design, all from Christchurch.

Join the freedom fight

The adjustment bureau

November is the month we come together and celebrate so much with Cup and Show Week right at the heart of it all.

We are now well into the “call to arms” to get as many of our community vaccinated against Covid-19 as is possible. The push for vaccinations has highlighted some challenging issues that are inherent in our community.

This is the November where our focus is now directed to getting our vaccination rates over 90 percent. There is no magic in the number. It is a minimum before we can shift to more freedom to come together, as we have done in Novembers past. It offers us a degree of protection that was missing a century ago when two events caused a massive spread of the 1918 influenza virus – Armistice Day and the A&P Show – the latter spreading the virus right across the region and beyond. It is helpful to think of our history, when we judge decisions that are being made today. I am really pleased to see

the response of our local businesses to supporting sensible precautions – scanning in, mask wearing and social distancing. Every bit helps. The Word Festival has reduced its programme and scaled back attendance in accordance with Level 2 requirements. Although it means some of the guests will be beaming into a live audience, at least we will have the chance to hear from them. Well done to Rachael King and the Word team. And as we come up to Christmas, let’s think about how we might support local businesses as a way to share gift-giving with ensuring our city’s recovery.

They include obvious inequities within and across our communities. It is very clear that we have a lot more work to do in health to address the disadvantaged, disengaged, and undertreated in our city and beyond. The statistics around vaccinations relating to ethnicity, age, and socio-economic status are telling. We also have a small minority who are sceptical about the merits of vaccination, despite unequivocal scientific evidence of the benefits. This is going to test the ability of our region to adjust to living with Covid-19, as it is the final few percent of

unvaccinated that could trigger an outbreak. That may push our health services to breaking point and frustrate our ability to provide all of the other important health support and services we depend on. Local health and wellness education, aggressive focused health research, and communicating critical fact-based health messages to our wider community have never been more important. Te Papa Hauora, the Health Precinct has an important role to play in all of these areas, to ensure that Canterbury remains a thriving healthy region, and a great place to live.

Sustainability goals

Between Te Pae Christchurch and Cathedral Square you may have noticed a large, strikinglooking black tower.

My exciting new role is to deliver the university’s environmental sustainability goals from its Strategic Vision 2020-2030.

Adorned with rainbow discs and shiny, copper-coloured strips, it stands out against the Convention Centre’s braided river facade. The tower is the central feature of a new public space we’re delivering - Conduit Square. It will be truly brought to life with the addition of some automated lighting, that will reflect off the tower and onto the surrounding area after sunset. In classic Covid style, the delayed arrival of our lighting experts from Auckland has been a bit of a speed bump in completing this space but their work will be worth the wait, as they’re also setting up something special for the

These include being carbon net neutral by 2030 and significantly raising awareness of sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across all aspects of university life. Operating in a more sustainable way is a critical issue facing all of society and is strongly supported by our staff and our students, who are increasingly concerned about how universities are taking action and leading on climate change and other urgent sustainability matters. My appointment tops a year of sustainability action at the university, where activities were recently aligned to each of the SDGs and captured in the university’s first SDG update. This shows some 100 examples of research breakthroughs,

grey wall on Gloucester Street. The area around Te Pae Christchurch will be home to a set of new hotels in the future, but we could see no reason why you shouldn’t be able to enjoy the space in advance of that. So, you’ll see plenty of picnic tables and seating in Conduit Square to be used as a summer lunchtime spot. We’ve also incorporated the necessary services for events to be held there and spill out onto the adjoining grass area. So, I would say watch this space - but in reality, once the light switch is thrown, you’ll struggle to miss it.

awards, initiatives to support diversity and equality on campus, and of course developments in education, such as new programmes, that all contribute to a more sustainable world. The university also recently hosted the 20202021 Aotearoa SDG Summit Series, with Lincoln University, Ara Institute of Canterbury, Christchurch City Council and other partners. The series drew over 900 participants and 83 speakers from the research, community, business and government sectors, resulting in an SDG Summit Declaration, signed by almost 200 organisations, a national SDG Alliance and 75 video recordings of sessions that are available online to the public. That’s just the start.

Setting the scene outdoors is just as important now as interior design, especially during the warmer months. Outdoor living adds a whole new dimension to a home and choosing the right pieces will mean both comfort and function. Here are some tips from Metropol:

Function – Think about how you want each outdoor space to work and furnish it accordingly. It may be for dining alfresco, evening drinkies, quiet reading or a play area for grandchildren. Try before you buy – Comfortable seating is essential so sit in sofas and chairs and test them out before purchasing. Look for pieces with plush upholstered cushions on the seats and backs. Easy-care – Minimise the need for upkeep. Invest in metal, teak, cedar, and wicker furniture that is low maintenance and will last for years with a bit of care. Use removable covers for easy washing. Invest in quality – When it comes to outdoor furniture, buy the best you can afford. Cheap and cheerful may look good for a while but will eventually become brittle and lose its colouring. Set the scene - Ground your outdoor furniture with an outdoor rug in a coordinating colour/pattern to tie the space together. Make sure it is rated for outdoors before buying.

f you’re an entertainer you’ll want a table that seats up to 10, and a drinks trolley. Your turn for the class barbeque will call for bench seating to fit them all in. Supervising the children beside the pool requires a sunlounger or two, and those endless summer afternoons will see a swing chair under the old macrocarpa tree constantly occupied. If serenity is your happy place, a coffee table and comfy chair is your home base. Of course, you’ll want your outdoor settings to look beautiful, as well as be durable and low maintenance. Nothing but kwila timber will do, with its good-looking grain and its high oil content, which makes it practically impervious to weather and threats from insects. But where to source the perfect pieces when the news about international freighting is all bad? The team at Kenneally Timber Products are way ahead of you, launching their collection with four containers stacked full of top quality kwila outdoor settings. “We believe we have the biggest range of kwila available in New Zealand, and we happily send it all around the country,” says owner Declan Kenneally.

84 11 November, 2021 Metropol

The collection is available to view at Kenneally’s new purpose-built showroom on Blakes Road in Belfast, just a short trip from Christchurch up the northern motorway or Main North Road. “If you’re interested in kwila settings, you will need to move on this, because the quality and the value for money means our onshore stock will sell quickly,” says Declan. Every piece comes with a five-year guarantee. A once-a-year oiling will keep the pieces looking great, or you can allow them to silver off to a mellow finish if that is more your style. The team are experts with a great deal of knowledge about the range, and every client receives personalised service to ensure they get the pieces that suit their lifestyle. “Our clients are everyone from people furnishing their own homes and baches to professional landscapers, hospitality settings, and we wholesale to commercial clients too,” says Declan. The vast range of tables and chairs can be mixed and matched and the furniture comes flat packed with some assembly required. Tables are rectangular, round, folding, some come with a lazy susan or umbrella

hole built in, and are available in settings with two chair options. The Kenneally’s are fourth generation timber merchants and are thrilled to be diversifying into outdoor living. “We moved from Kaiapoi into our new premises in Belfast this year, and opened the showroom. Early next year, we are adding decking and landscaping displays across our 90-metre frontage,” says Declan. Our new website is live and showcases the range, as well as the traditional timber products Kenneally’s has always supplied. They have structural timbers, hardwood decking and a large range of profiled timber including weatherboards, panelling, flooring, skirting, architrave and mouldings. They also supply native, exotic, and imported rough sawn timber, and can arrange machining to your requirements. Open six days a week, Kenneally’s new premises is efficient, the yard is fully sealed, and the staff are quick and handson. The bright new showroom is a treasure trove of kwila furniture products with parking at the door. Visit the team and secure your own holiday, every day.

Flawless renovation renews character The cobbler’s children might have been the worst shod, but this builder’s family have the most gorgeous, character packed, family friendly, desirable, and memorable home. The classic three-bedroom bungalow in Gosset Street always had bags of charm, but the rooms were small and dark, and many families-worth of love and laughter had taken their toll.

A

dd this heritage to the earthquake years, and so many of these little gems are lost for ever. But it was this home’s lucky day when Dax and Sarah Morel moved in. With a passion for character homes and an eye for a great location, they saw the beauty with a crystal clarity. Sarah’s flair for design is matched with Dax’s skill and experience in home-building

as a director of Morel Construction. Architect Tim Lonsdale put their ideas to paper and provided guidance throughout. The result is absolutely stunning - practical flow is blended perfectly with character details to give this home an exceedingly rare charisma. Work began with rebuilding the leadlight windows. The frames were replaced while the glass was restored and double glazed, as are all the windows. The house was reduced to three original walls, all the internal walls were reconfigured, the original wiring and plumbing came out, plus 95 percent of the gib. The weatherboards were replaced, the roof is rebuilt, and a ducted heating system to the living areas installed. “Everything is actually brand new,” says Dax, although, only an architectural historian might spot it. The panelling in the hall is era-perfect, flawlessly finished as is the entire house, and painted in Wan White. The new back of the house hosts the substantial 28sqm kitchen, dining and living. In a home packed with stunning features, the kitchen is a standout and Sarah’s favourite. An alchemic blend, the layout, choice of colours, and cabinetry design create an ideal space to cook, eat, work, socialise, play, or plan world domination. Every part of the house is packed with clever features. The laundry has a soundproof door so beeping and whirring stays where it should, the rubbish bin cabinet is fitted with a sensor, and computer gear is snug in a cupboard near the large dining table. Each of the four children has a desk with LED light fitted in their wardrobe, while the hallway cupboard houses linen as well as space for school bags and sports gear. The piece de resistance for every child under 99 is the ‘Lego loft’, a magical room in the roof space reached via folding ladder. The garage contains a teenagers’ den, man cave, and sitting area with bar, and bathroom. The kitchen’s sliding windows are wrapped by a serving shelf, marrying the decking with the interior. Sarah’s passion for the ‘garden to kitchen to plate’ ethos means the garden is packed with gorgeously landscaped fruit and vegetables. A ‘2021’ keystone in the chimney sums up the love poured into every square centimetre of this character home revival.

Open for viewing Ravenscar House Museum, the stylish new home for a collection celebrating New Zealand art and artists, opened to the public on November 8.

D

esigned by Patterson Associates, Ravenscar House Museum is the vision of Christchurch philanthropists Susan and the late Jim Wakefield who gifted it to the people of Christchurch

and Canterbury through their Ravenscar Trust. The House Museum at 52 Rolleston Avenue displays the Wakefield’s art collection (the Ravenscar Trust Collection) of paintings, decorative arts,

furniture and antiquities. Works include paintings by Frances Hodgkins, Colin McCahon, Ralph Hotere and a wide range of other beloved New Zealand artists. The Wakefields began collecting art in the late 1980s. Their collection was originally displayed in their home in coastal Scarborough, until the house was damaged beyond repair in the 2011 Canterbury earthquakes. The Wakefields eventually settled on a new site for the rebuilt house. This was gifted

to the museum for the project by the Christchurch City Council in 2015, following public consultation. The completed house comprises a foyer and four main rooms reminiscent of the principal rooms at the Scarborough House (the dining room, bedroom, living room and library), arranged around a central courtyard. A glazed gallery overlooks a Sculpture Terrace and the garden which has been designed by Auckland landscape architect, Suzanne Turley.

Heading into summer with longer days, many will be enjoying more time outside long after the sun goes down. That’s when the lights go on, and it’s just as important to have proper lighting outdoors as it is indoors.

any of the same principles apply to indoor and outdoor lighting, although the latter should be more robust and weatherproof. Fairy lights look pretty but they don’t necessarily provide adequate light so here are some tips from Metropol to light up your nights.

1.

Include ambient, task, and accent lighting. Ambient lighting is achieved through hanging lights, post lights, and wall lights. Task lighting includes pathway lights, plus deck and security lights, while accent lighting can be achieved with spotlights.

2. Plan ahead and choose fixtures that

work with the scale of the area. Also select sturdy lighting that’s made of high-quality and weather-resistant materials. For a lawn quick fix, try a landscape lighting kit that plugs directly into an outdoor outlet.

3. Use LEDs which use far less energy

than halogen or incandescent bulbs, and also think solar. LEDs are almost maintenance-free, so you don’t have to worry about changing the bulbs. Think path lighting for garden areas, or use solar outdoor lighting for a quick and easy style update.
