Thomas Edmonds was twenty-one when he and wife Jane left England for New Zealand. Initially, Thomas opened a grocer’s store in Woolston, but three years later moved to a house in Ferry Road. From here a baking powder factory was built. Cresting the building was a motif of a rising sun, and atop the roof stood a bold banner of three words: SURE TO RISE.

Thomas certainly chose his motto well. It was always Sure to Rise!

On a beautiful Saturday - 3rd of September - to the stirring sounds of bagpipes and drums, the New Zealand Parliamentary Rugby and Netball teams squared up to the Canterbury Rugby and Netball Legends at Christ’s College for two deserving charities – Hohepa and 0800HUNGRY.

Nuk describes the day with a glowing account. “It was awesome! All these iconic All Blacks and Crusaders from yesteryear putting in a cameo appearance then were replaced by their kids, while others like Alex Wyllie and Fergie McCormick came to support.” Nuk also cites the beneficence of those organisations, businesses and individuals who contributed behind the scenes. “They know who they are; their generosity – in time and donations –

Aidof a Life less ordinary

A life lived with authenticity of self and a will to always be curious and adventurous provides the perfect basis for a life less ordinary. Andrea Brewster is an incandescent example of this. Chair of the Christchurch Trade Aid Trust and a finalist in the Westpac Women of Influence Awards in the Young Leader category, she is an inspiring crusader for social change at grassroots and global levels. 1. How did you end up becoming Chair of the Christchurch Trade Aid Trust? I started as a Volunteer Educator, speaking to community groups about how fair trade is changing the world. I was then asked to become a Trustee of the Christchurch Shop Trust, and when the Chair role became vacant I was honoured to be nominated. I am passionate about governance and especially getting younger people onto boards, so this has been a great journey. 2. For those unfamiliar with the inspiring Trade Aid, can you please explain the role of the organisation? Trade Aid is New Zealand’s pioneering social enterprise, founded in 1973 in Christchurch. We’re improving the lives of talented artisans all over the world through fair trade. We import handmade crafts, homewares, and jewellery and sell them in our retail stores, which are owned by independent charitable trusts. Trade Aid also imports food products including raw coffee and cacao, and makes all our fair trade chocolate here in Christchurch.

3. What is it that you enjoy most about the role and the organisation? I recently discovered that my grandparents were involved with the beginnings of Trade Aid; helping Tibetan refugees in India export their traditional carpets. It’s incredibly special to continue the family legacy and learn how fair trade contributes to economic empowerment. Closer to home I’ve enjoyed overseeing the move of our shop back into the city. You can now find us in the Re:start mall – close to where the Trade Aid shop on Cashel Street was for many years before the earthquakes. It’s great to be part of the buzzing central city! 4. How unique is Trade Aid from other organisations of a similar ilk? There are now lots of awesome fair trade organisations in New Zealand. Trade Aid was the first, and we’re part of the World Fair Trade Organisation, which means we have to adhere to ten standards around equitable and environmentally friendly

practices in all aspects of our business. There’s more transparency and accountability than individual product labelling schemes, such as the Fairtrade label. 5. How do you balance the responsibilities of Trade Aid with your other work? I have another board role with Catapult Employment Services, which just won Champion Charity at the Canterbury business awards. Catapult supports disadvantaged Cantabrians into paid employment, provides career mapping and work-related anxiety counselling – it’s another organisation making a big difference to people’s lives. This year I’m participating in the Committee for Canterbury’s Future Canterbury leadership programme, working on a research project about freedom camping. And I have a real job too - communications advisor for the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. I’m very disciplined with my time and

comms, starting in advertising agencies while researching my Honours thesis on Facebook marketing in small businesses. Last year I got the opportunity to work on comms and stakeholder engagement for the central city rebuild at CERA. That was a great professional challenge and I loved contributing to our new city – it included highlights like the Bus Interchange opening and working with the SPECTRUM street art festival. Now at the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet I advise our leadership team on strategic communications projects, and manage internal communications. 7. What are some of your ultimate personal and professional ambitions? My goal is to create positive and lasting change and inspire people, and I’d like to do that by eventually becoming a CEO and professional director. We need more women in leadership, and that change isn’t happening fast enough so I’m doing what I can. This year I’ve had recognition from Women on Boards as a ‘next generation’ leader, and it’s

Tell us about how your career has evolved in other areas I’ve always worked in marketing and

Who do you look to for guidance and advice around your career? I’m lucky to have many amazing mentors who give me sage advice when I need it, and I’m really grateful for the support I’ve had from so many different people. This year Lisa-Marie Richan has been my formal mentor through the Future Canterbury leadership programme. I’m also surrounded by fabulous strong women in my circle of peers and friends, who inspire me every day. 10. Favourite mantra? We all get the same 24 hours a day!

Lyttelton Life: A Town To Treasure By Céline Gibson

While going about their digging business recently, a SCIRT team unearthed a precious piece of maritime history, buried two metres deep in one of the steepest streets in Lyttelton. It was a 1.6 metre cast iron anchor. The Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team immediately stopped work to call in an expert.

ccording to archaeologist Peter Mitchell, “It appeared to be an admiralty anchor with a sliding stock. It may have been used for either a smallish vessel or as a spare anchor used for kedging. Wrought iron anchors were

from the early 1800s, whereas anchors of cast iron or steel date from the late 1800s.” Christine Wilson of Lyttelton Community House wasn’t surprised at the find. “In an old port town like this - they’ll find heaps yet!”

While most employers deem multitasking an asset in the workplace, believing it promotes productivity; scientists are dispelling this mistaken belief and are instead advocating a different approach dubbed ‘switchtasking’ that aligns with how our brains naturally work.

euroscience research supports this newfound truth in the discovery that the brain isn’t wired to do different tasks simultaneously as we once thought, or had hoped, but actually switches from one to another. Acknowledging this ‘start-stop-start’ process and knowing how to apply it effectively is vital if we want to achieve greater productivity, minimise stress and avoid unnecessary mistakes. Working in a world where people have the expectation of having their demands met almost instantly and in close proximity to others, especially in open-plan offices, it takes discipline and mindfulness not to get swept up in a

maelstrom of competing demands coming from all directions. The trick is being able to instantly drop one task before engaging completely with the next. For example, if you’re deeply immersed in one task and then interrupted by a phone call, instead of answering the call impatiently because your head’s still stuck in the previous task, the skill is being able to let go of the previous task to be able to engage fully in the one before you. Just as a dog is utterly engaged with the task at hand until a tasty treat or promise of a walk is presented, we too can learn to drop the past to focus on the present.

opulation growth in the south-west area of Christchurch post the 2011 earthquakes saw an unprecedented demand for health services in the suburb of Halswell. The result is Longhurst Health, an integrated family health centre providing convenient, accessible and high standard health services to the local community. In one stylishly-designed building, patients can access general practice doctors and nurses, as well as dental, physiotherapy, podiatry, chiropractic and acupuncture services. There is also a pharmacy, a hand clinic and a café onsite and now the ultrasound practice has joined the other specialists. “I’ve been involved in ultrasound imaging since the technology was developed in the 1970s,” Paul says. “Most of that time I have worked away from Christchurch, for the Nelson/Marlborough DHB and also in Auckland. I’ve been looking for an opportunity to return to the South Island to be with family and the Longhurst Health development offered just that.” Paul saw there was no other ultrasound practice on the south west side of the city and realised that from the conveniently-located Longhurst Health facility he would be able to offer services, not only to the local community, but also to people from the Selwyn

District and country districts further south. Longhurst Ultrasound is a private, specialist ultrasound practice. Using state-of-the-art equipment, Paul and his staff specialise in the areas of obstetric and gynaecological scans and screening and also carry out musculoskeletal and vascular scans as well as scans of other parts of the human body. “Our obstetrics and gynaecology patients are referred to us by their mid-wives or specialists or their GP. We work in close conjunction with mid-wives and specialists to provide optimum care for mothers and babies. Mothers first of all have a dating scan, then a second scan at 11 – 13 weeks and a third anatomy scan at 18 – 20 weeks. We also carry out growth and foetal appraisals from that stage onwards until the pregnancy reaches term and provide the mid-wives with specialist graphs and growth charts.” Paul adds that ultrasound scans assist other specialists in the diagnosis of medical issues. A musculoskeletal scan for example can help determine the path of future treatment – whether that might include surgery or physiotherapy. “We are looking forward to shortly moving into our dedicated rooms on the first floor of this building. We will then have two consulting rooms and a waiting room and reception area, so we will be totally set up to provide a high standard of care to patients.” You can contact Longhurst Ultrasound on 03 595 2256.

illiam Roper, in his second year of a Diploma in Fashion Technology and Design, recently took out the Menswear Award at the Hokonui Fashion Design Awards. He puts his success down to the broad range of skills he has gained at Ara. “Succeeding in the industry is not just

about being good at design. You need the skills to research, make patterns, select fabrics and then actually construct the garments. The advantage of this course is that we learn to do all those things,” he says. William would ultimately like to start his own label, but for now he’s looking forward

to gaining more experience with the industry’s best. He undertook a placement with Zambesi this year, which he hopes will lead to an entry-level role. Industry placements provide the opportunity for Ara students to not only gain real-world experience, but also kick off their careers. Graduate Sophie Dinsenbacher secured her first role as the result of a final-year internship with Karen Walker. “The industry work experience part of the qualification was a significant milestone for me. Interning at Karen Walker opened doors. I was offered a full-time role there, starting just three days after our final-year show,” she says. Now working as the Production Manager at Stolen Girlfriends Club, Sophie is also on the cusp of launching a custom, tailored suit company. She says that the technical skills gained through her study have played a huge role in getting to this stage in her career. “Gaining a well-balanced understanding of technical and business skills was invaluable. Having an extensive knowledge of pattern making and construction has been something that I have drawn on every day,” she says.

hriller” remains the most popular and influential music video of all time and his zombie dance has become an annual tribal ritual in major cities around the world, with initiates in ghoul makeup imitating Michael’s moves en masse.

But the idea to create an international event, in which participants simultaneously emulate the dance in the music video of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, came about in 2006 when a group of 62 zombies set a Guinness World Record for Largest Thriller Dance in one location in Canada.

The event—part-charity fundraiser, part-world record attempt—evolved into Thrill the World, one of the world’s largest simultaneous dance events, but this unique event has evolved into so much more than dancing to a 6-minute song. It’s about inspiring others to break down barriers, connecting with people of all religions, race, political and economic persuasions, contributing to helping humanity, encouraging environmental stewardship and encouraging people to step up as leaders, visionaries and creators. This year’s local event will be hosted by the Isaac Theatre Royal and held on 30 October at 11am in the Cathedral Square. Like its predecessor, Thrill the World Christchurch will raise funds for charity, with this year’s proceeds going to YMCA Dancing Like the Stars – a free nine week programme for children at low decile schools who would not normally be able to access recreational dance. Fish soup pizza – it may not sound like the most appealing way to enjoy this popular Italian dish, but the unique creation did see its French maker crowned the best pizza-maker in the world after his bouillabaisse pizza won the World Pizza Championships for 2016.

is no longer the cheap takeaway option it once was. Today gourmet pizzas are gaining in popularity, with some of the city’s most stylish restaurants placing pizza in a prime spot on the menu – though their toppings are undoubtedly more inspiring than the

classic Hawaiian. This year’s winning chef used tomatoes, bream carpaccio, mozzarella, courgette flowers, prawns and Tabasco sauce to create his masterpiece and it’s not even the most elaborate creation to grace the 2016 event. An ornate pizza, topped with courgette flowers and delicate towers of pomme de terre, a pizza featuring Vesuvius style peaks full of molten cheese cream, a nutella and mozzarella specimen and surprisingly there was the classic ham and pineapple, even in Italy of all places. While in the seasonal category there were figs

Position plants carefully Choose plants that suit the environment, since even the most dedicated gardener can’t make a sun-loving plant thrive in a cold, shady area. So, ensure that your plants are suited to the light levels and temperature of the room in which they’ll be positioned.

Avoid direct sun Windowsills in direct sunlight will be too hot for most house plants. Also, don’t place house plants over direct sources of heat, such as radiators.

Pot on regularly Aim to repot your house plants into larger pots every two years or so. This will ensure that they are not stressed and will thrive.

uriosa is a collision of Sacha Coogan’s and Ezra Weaver’s creative dreams. It began when Graham Weaver retired from Cheviot’s White Cat Emporium, passing his antique-obsessed genes and contacts in provincial France and Italy to son Ezra. For my colleague, and I, it was a forum which added a third dimension to the glossy pictures, web-based seminars and articles that we typically refer to. While we spent two days at the Biennale, and failed to see it all, there was one exhibition that I found particularly interesting when thinking about Christchurch, and the rebuild of our city. For international practice, Grafton, their exhibition presented their work in civic spaces in Peru and the underlying concept of understanding how we can

Consider the laneways being established in the South Frame. This is a great opportunity and a wonderful way in which to direct people through the city. best inhabit the left over spaces – the gaps between buildings. They believed that ‘the spaces in between are a luxury that cold countries can’t afford’. Reflecting on this concept in the laneways and wide piazzas of Italy, it is immediately apparent that these are comfortable spaces to be in. They are activated and bought to life by the sheer number of people who occupy them, and importantly, the climate.

So, can we in Christchurch, afford the places in-between? Does our climate offer the opportunity to capitalise on, and utilise them? While we are not a cold country like those in the Baltic region with harsh winters, neither are we are a hot place like Dubai. Ultimately, we are far from the Mediterranean environment that offers innovative utilisation of these outdoor spaces. The suburban mall is one example of how we have adapted for our climate. It is

the 21st century high street. We occupy this space in the same way as a high-end shopping street in Florence. However it lacks the character and ambience that you would find in its outdoor equivalent. There are not many opportunities in which to sit back, soak in the atmosphere and relax with a chianti in the Mall. Consider the laneways being established in the South Frame. This is a great opportunity and a wonderful way in which to direct people through the city, but are we forcing an engagement with these external spaces in order to achieve a utopian approach to rebuilding the city? If you close your eyes, you can visualise how the laneways, the spaces in between, may feel: the sun shining, a light northwest breeze, friends and a relaxing atmosphere. But, while the friends and a sense of atmosphere will remain, the reality of Christchurch is that even in the height of summer, we can have four seasons in one day and a howling easterly. Just perhaps, we are trying to create something that is not fully informed by the local environment and setting. Making success that much harder as a result. Although, perhaps I will be surprised and Christchurch will prove Grafton wrong: that space in between is a luxury that cold countries can afford. It’s a type of synergistic relationship between automobile model and mankind that defies the limits of the imagination. I have a hectic life ranging from real estate and writing, through to fulfilling parental duties and meeting the demands of a packed social calendar.

anaging these various obligations involves all sorts of requirements from my vehicle and the Volkswagen Tiguan I got my hands on recently rose to the challenge. There are several versions, but I had the pleasure of putting the TSI Highline, 132 kw through its paces. Quick, grunty and with attractive features, I came to like it a lot. Firstly, and I’ve said it before, the interactive dash on ALL this year’s Volkswagen’s I’ve tried is exceptional. It’s the benchmark I judge all other cars against. I love its ease of access from

my iPhone and the easy to navigate system. The dash boasts clean and strong lines and the seating arrangement on all of the vehicles is great. Better still, the Tiguan has a couple of extras. There are tray tables in the back seat with individual chargers that any parent with children who like using devices or eating on the run will love. The automatic opening boot with touch button close is something that took me a couple of ‘Oh yeah’s’ before I realised how great that option is. The front passenger seat folds down front ways so when you fold down

the back seat you can load something extra-long into the car. You can get roof racks for the vehicle, but I like this feature as an option for storage. Volkswagen crossed the word Tiger and Iguana to get Tiguan and on the road the vehicle really does live up to its namesake with great prowess. Lots of power, good to drive, and economical. If it’s family, business or loading the friends into the car for a trip to Akaroa without feeling like sardines, the Volkswagen Tiguan ticks all my boxes for a great all-rounder. With prices ranging from $41,990, it’s very good bang for buck.

You clean your classic motorcycle, you put on your classic suit, you groom your hair and you hit the road to join other likeminded souls on the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride.

otorcycle riders from across the city took to the streets in dapper duds on 25 September to raise money for solutions to two key men’s health challenges. The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was launched in 2012 in Sydney with 2,500 riders in 64 cities. Support has grown rapidly over the past four years, with almost 27,000 riders registered for the 2016 Ride. Local organiser Andy Burchall of motorcycle dealership First European explains that all the funds raised here and abroad are directed at prostate cancer research and suicide prevention programmes through official charity partner The Movember Foundation.

Burchall cites the Barber Queue fundraiser the day before the ride as one such idea that fits in with the event’s aim of raising money while celebrating classic custom motorcycles and the art of being dapper. The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is described by the organisers as a niche charity event “with gentlefolk riding their Café Racer, Bobber, Classic, Tracker, Scrambler, Old School Chopper, Modern Classic, Sidecar, Classic Scooter and Brat Styled motorcycles”. I’m not sure if I would describe myself either as a Gentleman, nor distinguished! But the whole idea is that motorcycle fans like myself get together for a worthy cause. Well done to Andy Burchall and the team at first European.
