ROTUNDA REVISITED By Céline Gibson

“It will stand on its former site, and will replicate, as much as is possible, the original structure. We’re very fortunate that the heritage copper dome sustained little damage – so expect to see that again.” Andrew Rutledge, CCC

Thomas Edmonds was twenty-one when he and wife Jane left England for New Zealand. Initially, Thomas opened a grocer’s store in Woolston, but three years later moved to a house in Ferry Road. From here a baking powder factory was built. Cresting the building was a motif of a rising sun, and atop the roof stood a bold banner of three words: SURE TO RISE.

T

homas bequeathed many buildings to Christchurch in his lifetime and in 1929, to mark his fifty years in business, a band rotunda was built on Cambridge Terrace. Sadly, the 2011 quake caused its necessary deconstruction.

But now we have fabulous news – our riparian pleasure dome returns! Andrew Rutledge, Head of Parks at Christchurch City Council, outlines the project. “It will stand on its former site, and

will replicate, as much as is possible, the original structure. We’re very fortunate that the heritage copper dome sustained little damage – so expect to see that again.” The rotunda won’t be returning as a restaurant, however. “Honouring the reason it was commissioned in the first place, the rotunda will once again be a venue for music and performance.” For optimum audience comfort, Andrew says the hope is that the new rotunda will feature glazing in the form of retractable windows. “They’ll be a big plus in our somewhat tricky climate.” The build begins early 2017 with an estimated completion by mid-2017. Thomas certainly chose his motto well. It was always Sure to Rise!

Parliamentary

sports match By Céline Gibson

On a beautiful Saturday - 3rd of September - to the stirring sounds of bagpipes and drums, the New Zealand Parliamentary Rugby and Netball teams squared up to the Canterbury Rugby and Netball Legends at Christ’s College for two deserving charities – Hohepa and 0800HUNGRY.

“I

t’s a day where politicians put aside their politics to unite for a good cause,” says National List MP Nuk Korako, the host of this year’s event. Nuk describes the day with a glowing account. “It was awesome! All these iconic All Blacks and Crusaders from yesteryear putting in a cameo appearance then were replaced by their kids, while others like Alex Wyllie and Fergie McCormick came to support.” Nuk also cites the beneficence of those organisations, businesses and individuals who contributed behind the scenes. “They know who they are; their generosity – in time and donations –

went above and beyond.” Nuk taps a finger on the Parliamentary Sports Match flyer, “Kind of explains why we Kiwis rate so highly in philanthropy in the world, doesn’t it?” The matches were live-streamed, something Nuk was determined on, as both Hohepa and 0800HUNGRY had identified their desire to raise their community profiles. “The live-streaming will generate interest and attention to these charities. It’s a great publicity tool.” Hilary Muir and Bevan Killick did a “fantastic job” in their MC roles at the after match auction and function. “Just over $25,695 was raised,” says Nuk, looking rightly chuffed.

Aidof a Life less ordinary

In

A life lived with authenticity of self and a will to always be curious and adventurous provides the perfect basis for a life less ordinary. Andrea Brewster is an incandescent example of this. Chair of the Christchurch Trade Aid Trust and a finalist in the Westpac Women of Influence Awards in the Young Leader category, she is an inspiring crusader for social change at grassroots and global levels. 1. How did you end up becoming Chair of the Christchurch Trade Aid Trust? I started as a Volunteer Educator, speaking to community groups about how fair trade is changing the world. I was then asked to become a Trustee of the Christchurch Shop Trust, and when the Chair role became vacant I was honoured to be nominated. I am passionate about governance and especially getting younger people onto boards, so this has been a great journey. 2. For those unfamiliar with the inspiring Trade Aid, can you please explain the role of the organisation? Trade Aid is New Zealand’s pioneering social enterprise, founded in 1973 in Christchurch. We’re improving the lives of talented artisans all over the world through fair trade. We import handmade crafts, homewares, and jewellery and sell them in our retail stores, which are owned by independent charitable trusts. Trade Aid also imports food products including raw coffee and cacao, and makes all our fair trade chocolate here in Christchurch.

16 October 6 2016 Metropol

3. What is it that you enjoy most about the role and the organisation? I recently discovered that my grandparents were involved with the beginnings of Trade Aid; helping Tibetan refugees in India export their traditional carpets. It’s incredibly special to continue the family legacy and learn how fair trade contributes to economic empowerment. Closer to home I’ve enjoyed overseeing the move of our shop back into the city. You can now find us in the Re:start mall – close to where the Trade Aid shop on Cashel Street was for many years before the earthquakes. It’s great to be part of the buzzing central city! 4. How unique is Trade Aid from other organisations of a similar ilk? There are now lots of awesome fair trade organisations in New Zealand. Trade Aid was the first, and we’re part of the World Fair Trade Organisation, which means we have to adhere to ten standards around equitable and environmentally friendly

practices in all aspects of our business. There’s more transparency and accountability than individual product labelling schemes, such as the Fairtrade label. 5. How do you balance the responsibilities of Trade Aid with your other work? I have another board role with Catapult Employment Services, which just won Champion Charity at the Canterbury business awards. Catapult supports disadvantaged Cantabrians into paid employment, provides career mapping and work-related anxiety counselling – it’s another organisation making a big difference to people’s lives. This year I’m participating in the Committee for Canterbury’s Future Canterbury leadership programme, working on a research project about freedom camping. And I have a real job too - communications advisor for the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. I’m very disciplined with my time and

comms, starting in advertising agencies while researching my Honours thesis on Facebook marketing in small businesses. Last year I got the opportunity to work on comms and stakeholder engagement for the central city rebuild at CERA. That was a great professional challenge and I loved contributing to our new city – it included highlights like the Bus Interchange opening and working with the SPECTRUM street art festival. Now at the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet I advise our leadership team on strategic communications projects, and manage internal communications. 7. What are some of your ultimate personal and professional ambitions? My goal is to create positive and lasting change and inspire people, and I’d like to do that by eventually becoming a CEO and professional director. We need more women in leadership, and that change isn’t happening fast enough so I’m doing what I can. This year I’ve had recognition from Women on Boards as a ‘next generation’ leader, and it’s

After travelling I always have a renewed appreciation for our relative political and economic stability, and our beautiful outdoor backyard which needs to be protected for everyone to enjoy.

being focused on whatever I’m doing in the present moment. My weeks often involve travel to multiple cities, long days, meetings before and after work, events and giving talks, and I’ve had to become a morning person to fit in gym sessions! Staying fit helps - I have a great personal trainer who keeps me honest, and I love getting out in the hills to clear my head while trail running and ski touring. 6. Tell us about how your career has evolved in other areas I’ve always worked in marketing and

incredibly humbling to be a 2016 Women of Influence finalist. I’m really proud to be part of this initiative and hope to continue the journey in many years to come. 8. What is some of the most inspiring travel you have done and how has this impacted your life in a personal and professional capacity? In my mid-teens my parents took us to India twice, including a visit to our World Vision sponsored child in rural Palassa. That showed me how lucky we are to live in New Zealand with access to

An ecletic mix on offer at Trade Aid

education and choices, and has been a big influence on my involvement in social enterprises like Trade Aid. I recently returned from a month in South America for the Rio 2016 Olympics. That was an incredible experience and it highlighted how fortunate I am to be able to go on trips like that. After travelling I always have a renewed appreciation for our relative political and economic stability, and our beautiful outdoor backyard which needs to be protected for everyone to enjoy. 9. Who do you look to for guidance and advice around your career? I’m lucky to have many amazing mentors who give me sage advice when I need it, and I’m really grateful for the support I’ve had from so many different people. This year Lisa-Marie Richan has been my formal mentor through the Future Canterbury leadership programme. I’m also surrounded by fabulous strong women in my circle of peers and friends, who inspire me every day. 10. Favourite mantra? We all get the same 24 hours a day!

Lyttelton Life: A Town To Treasure By Céline Gibson

While going about their digging business recently, a SCIRT team unearthed a precious piece of maritime history, buried two metres deep in one of the steepest streets in Lyttelton. It was a 1.6 metre cast iron anchor. The Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team immediately stopped work to call in an expert.

A

ccording to archaeologist Peter Mitchell, “It appeared to be an admiralty anchor with a sliding stock. It may have been used for either a smallish vessel or as a spare anchor used for kedging. Wrought iron anchors were

from the early 1800s, whereas anchors of cast iron or steel date from the late 1800s.” Christine Wilson of Lyttelton Community House wasn’t surprised at the find. “In an old port town like this - they’ll find heaps yet!”

Our talk moves to things above earth. What’s great about Lyttelton? Christine stares out her window. “Look out there!” The sea is turquoise, toytown boats bob gently in the distance. Christine smiles, “You should talk to Wendy Everingham!”

From coastal walks and half day tramps, to the Lyttelton Township ‘Nooks and Crannies’ walk, there’s something here for everyone. Wendy manages the Lyttelton Information Centre and produces the Lyttelton Harbour Review, a fortnightly produced, information packed booklet. “Our new Walking Map of Lyttelton is your best guide!” From coastal walks and half day tramps, to the Lyttelton Township ‘Nooks and Crannies’ walk, there’s something here for everyone. It’s like being transported into Hogwarts at Mozarts, which is festooned with art, colour and fantasy, complete with a Harry Potteresque grotto - and as Jenny says, you can’t have too much glitter! Even the fences are handpainted by little budding artists. There is a ratio of seven children to a fully registered teacher, each with talents of their own and who encourage creativity and inquisitive imaginations. Reading time is interactive with stories coming to life with sounds and actions. Creations are made from recycling and then used as learning tools. There’s dancing, Einstein’s science time upon the flying carpet, numeracy is taught within an exciting game, and there’s always a theme of the moment. FASHION & STYLE HEAL HEALTH & BEA BEAUTY MAKEO MAKEOVER KIDZONE FASHION NZ

By Majka Kaiser

Timeless, chic, grungy, or simply downright relaxed, styles may come and go, but no matter the cut, denim jeans remain a trusty wardrobe mainstay. Versatility is key and with these top styling tips you can wear jeans day and night, season after season, and never get bored.

1.

Having a ‘fat’ day? A crisp oversized cotton shirt or a tunic over a pair of stretchy skinny jeans will hide a multitude of sins. In the cooler months don an oversized wool sweater and a pair of knee high boots for the ultimate coverage and confidence.

2. 3.

Keep it simple by pairing inky blue denim jeans with a clean-cut neutral top. Use these basics as a blank canvas then add the ‘wow-factor’ with bold accessories like a wildly patterned clutch, scarf, jewellery, or footwear.

Dazzle after dark with a touch of bling. A sequin top or jacket can elevate the most humble pair of jeans to new heights. If you’re not quite so brave to sport sparkling sequins then metallic or shimmery fabrics will create a similar lux look that’s a little more understated.

Footwear can make all the difference to not only how you feel and carry yourself, but the statement you intend to make. Transform your entire look by swapping out your cute daytime loafers that are perfect for a weekend brunch date with a polished pair of stilettos for drinks with the girls on a Saturday night.

7.

䈀愀稀愀愀爀

When the occasion calls for something with a little more panache, but you don’t want to ditch the denim, why not opt for a monochromatic scheme in either black or white? Reach for tops that have luxuriously tactile textures like silk, chiffon, or lace to offset the relaxed nature of denim.

6.

5.

For the classic, casual look you can’t go past a pair of your favourite well-worn jeans with a white T-shirt teamed with a leather motorcycle jacket. Wear with flats, heels or boots depending on your mood.

䔀甀瀀栀漀爀椀愀 䌀漀搀攀

4.

For Casual Fridays, or if you’re lucky enough to clock into a workplace that’s laid-back enough, then keep things professional by dressing up a sleek pair of jeans with a tailored blazer or tuxedo-style jacket and a pair of sexy heels or ankle boots.

ULTHERA HAS FINALLY ARRIVED IN CHRISTCHURCH! Ultherapy is a new type of nonsurgical, non-invasive procedure that uses focused ultrasound and the body’s own natural healing process to lift, tone and tighten loose skin on the brow, neck and under the chin and even the décolletage (upper chest area).

W

ith Ultherapy there is no downtime, no foreign substances, no radical change just a healthy revving-up on the inside for a natural, noticeable effect on the outside. It causes a tighter, better fitting skin, even on the neck - it’s the lift without the surgery! Ultherapy is the only non-invasive procedure cleared by the FDA to lift the skin on the brow, neck, under the chin and the décolletage. Unlike lasers, which penetrate the skin from the outside-in, Ultherapy bypasses the surface of the skin and delivers targeted energy specifically into the deep, structural tissues. This stimulation of the

Before

After 90 Days

deep supportive layers of the skin initiates a regenerative response stimulating the growth of new collagen, which lifts and tightens the skin over the next 90 days. The results appear gradually over the next 60-90 days and the new, young collagen that results is still present a year after the procedure. However, it’s not a magical cure, the skin will continue to age. It is recommended to have yearly touch-

up treatments to help keep pace with the ageing process. Ultherapy is not a replacement for the surgical face-lift. Many people want some lifting but are not ready for surgery and there are also younger people who want to “stay ahead of the game!” Call the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic on 351 3241 to see if Ultherapy is the right treatment for you.

the

Multitasking

myth

By Majka Kaiser

While most employers deem multitasking an asset in the workplace, believing it promotes productivity; scientists are dispelling this mistaken belief and are instead advocating a different approach dubbed ‘switchtasking’ that aligns with how our brains naturally work.

N

euroscience research supports this newfound truth in the discovery that the brain isn’t wired to do different tasks simultaneously as we once thought, or had hoped, but actually switches from one to another. Acknowledging this ‘start-stop-start’ process and knowing how to apply it effectively is vital if we want to achieve greater productivity, minimise stress and avoid unnecessary mistakes. Working in a world where people have the expectation of having their demands met almost instantly and in close proximity to others, especially in open-plan offices, it takes discipline and mindfulness not to get swept up in a

maelstrom of competing demands coming from all directions. The trick is being able to instantly drop one task before engaging completely with the next. For example, if you’re deeply immersed in one task and then interrupted by a phone call, instead of answering the call impatiently because your head’s still stuck in the previous task, the skill is being able to let go of the previous task to be able to engage fully in the one before you. Just as a dog is utterly engaged with the task at hand until a tasty treat or promise of a walk is presented, we too can learn to drop the past to focus on the present.

Acknowledging this ‘start-stopstart’ process and knowing how to apply it effectively is vital if we want to achieve greater productivity, minimise stress and avoid unnecessary mistakes.

elping women through her volunteer work at Dress for Success, Debbie Reeves has witnessed first hand the positive impact dressing has on self esteem that has inspired the inception of her own styling business. By mentoring them through their first job interview and styling the outfits they wear, Debbie says it has been a fulfilling calling. “Seeing how dressing for success empowers women definitely inspired me to reach as many women as possible,” Debbie explains. Building on her work with women at Dress for Success and finding herself being called on by friends and family for her trusted advice on what to wear and how to wear it, she soon established her personalised styling service, Polished Style by Debbie Reeves. With packages starting at just $100 it’s an affordable service for almost anyone, and Debbie says it can literally save you hundreds of dollars on embarrassing style faux pas and barely worn items that have been relegated to the back of the wardrobe. Beginning with an initial consultation Debbie gives a body shape assessment that reveals the most flattering styles for your figure and a colour guide for hues that best complement your skin tone and accentuate your best features. Then comes the best bit - the shopping expedition! Along the way Debbie offers insider style tips on hair, make-up and fashion accessories to create the complete polished look from head to toe. Whether you’re looking for a fresh approach to your personal style or assimilating a killer work wardrobe, Debbie has the skills to win back your confidence in the style stakes.

COMMUNITY CENTRIC CARE patients can access general practice doctors, as well as dental, physiotherapy, podiatry, chiropractic and acupuncture services.

“We are excited to be part of this integrated health care campus.” Paul Kendrick, Lead Sonographer at Longhurst Ultrasound, is referring to the comprehensive health facility – Longhurst Health - in the suburb of Halswell where Longhurst Ultrasound has recently set up practice.

P

opulation growth in the south-west area of Christchurch post the 2011 earthquakes saw an unprecedented demand for health services in the suburb of Halswell. The result is Longhurst Health, an integrated family health centre providing convenient, accessible and high standard health services to the local community. In one stylishly-designed building, patients can access general practice doctors and nurses, as well as dental, physiotherapy, podiatry, chiropractic and acupuncture services. There is also a pharmacy, a hand clinic and a café onsite and now the ultrasound practice has joined the other specialists. “I’ve been involved in ultrasound imaging since the technology was developed in the 1970s,” Paul says. “Most of that time I have worked away from Christchurch, for the Nelson/Marlborough DHB and also in Auckland. I’ve been looking for an opportunity to return to the South Island to be with family and the Longhurst Health development offered just that.” Paul saw there was no other ultrasound practice on the south west side of the city and realised that from the conveniently-located Longhurst Health facility he would be able to offer services, not only to the local community, but also to people from the Selwyn

District and country districts further south. Longhurst Ultrasound is a private, specialist ultrasound practice. Using state-of-the-art equipment, Paul and his staff specialise in the areas of obstetric and gynaecological scans and screening and also carry out musculoskeletal and vascular scans as well as scans of other parts of the human body. “Our obstetrics and gynaecology patients are referred to us by their mid-wives or specialists or their GP. We work in close conjunction with mid-wives and specialists to provide optimum care for mothers and babies. Mothers first of all have a dating scan, then a second scan at 11 – 13 weeks and a third anatomy scan at 18 – 20 weeks. We also carry out growth and foetal appraisals from that stage onwards until the pregnancy reaches term and provide the mid-wives with specialist graphs and growth charts.” Paul adds that ultrasound scans assist other specialists in the diagnosis of medical issues. A musculoskeletal scan for example can help determine the path of future treatment – whether that might include surgery or physiotherapy. “We are looking forward to shortly moving into our dedicated rooms on the first floor of this building. We will then have two consulting rooms and a waiting room and reception area, so we will be totally set up to provide a high standard of care to patients.” You can contact Longhurst Ultrasound on 03 595 2256.

experts at Street Legal add that we should also be looking out for high shine metallic flats, in a full lace-up shoe or a slingback - definitely more comfortable for a day on one’s feet at the races. We also need to mention other bright new happenings at South City. It’s a little difficult to segue from fashion to toilets, but this is something very dear to the many people at the centre. The refurbishment of the centre’s toilet facilities for both the public and the staff is making good progress and by the time we are thinking of shopping for Christmas the transformation from 1990s wear to 2016 chic and contemporary should be complete.

While race day is all about being fashion forward, there are certain race day specific style rules to follow. A race day is an elegant affair, so as a general rule you’ll dress more conservatively than you would for a nightclub, but more formal than a usual daytime event. For ladies a dress is traditional, however jumpsuits or skirt and top separates are also very popular.

Coordination is everything when it comes to your race day look, but that doesn’t mean you have to match your handbag exactly to your shoes. Modern race day attire is more about a cohesive and individual look rather than a cookie cutter one. Pick an aspect of your dress and use it as the theme to tie the rest of your look together. Headwear - whether a hat, fascinator or headpiece - is an essential part of your race day look, and heels are a must for a glamorous finish. When it comes to bags, keep them small and elegant, and most importantly, don’t forget to have fun.

For 2016, we’re taking a long-look at the most beautiful options available with silk and floral fabrics winning our hearts. Fresh Pescatarian Fare By Angela Waller

“We are fiercely proud of the fresh and local fare at both ‘Duxling’ venues,” says owner, Richard Sinke, and rightly so. “The venues are more mature, grown up versions of the Dux of old.”

D

ux Dine continues the tradition of pescatarian dining, started over 30 years ago at ‘The Dux’. Open all day from breakfast through to late dinners, the menu uses the freshest, local produce and seafood and is complimented by exclusively New Zealand wines. Writing in the secluded garden oasis with a light and cheerful aromatic, I could easily persuade myself that I am in a Marseilles Bistro, not here on Riccarton Road! In contrast, Dux Central is at the heart of the rebuild of our city. The feeling of rebirth is almost palpable. There is an excitement to the four bar venue that is somehow familiar. Watching the cranes in the near distance from the two-storey courtyard, with one

of over 200 craft beers for company and a live jazz quartet humming over my shoulder is a satisfyingly surreal experience. I instantly regret not ordering food when the neighbouring table’s food is delivered by the attentive waitress - the restaurant quality gastro-pub style food at Dux Central is designed to suit a diverse range of diners. It looks and smells delicious! Richard sums it up perfectly when he says, “The Dux story echoes the post-quake story of a more mature and sophisticated city. A nod to the past, with our eyes on a new and exciting future.” Dux Dine - 28 Riccarton Road/ phone 348 1436. Dux Central - 6 Poplar Street/ phone 03 943 7830.

A BEAUTIFUL OUTLOOK It’s that time again, when Cantabrians begin to prepare for the events of Anniversary Weekend. We all want to look and feel our best, and for many that will mean heading to an Appearance Medicine physician for some expert advice.

F

or Doctor Philip Frost, Medical Director at Face Value clinic in Merivale, the next few months will be a particularly busy time, with many clients seeking Botox treatments to soften frown lines and crows feet and those wrinkles that come with ageing. He offers some advice for those considering a first time treatment: “Botox is a very safe and effective treatment, yet it is also ‘techniquesensitive’, so it’s important to ensure that your practitioner is trained in aesthetic medicine to get the best results for you. Find out as much as you can about the practitioner’s experience, or visit the New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine website to check for accredited doctors.”

Doctor Frost offers a full initial consultation and facial analysis to work out a plan for each client and stresses that each one is very different. He cautions against signing up to longer term plans that involve committing to ongoing treatments, similar to gym memberships. “Everyone is unique and responds to treatments in different ways. Develop a plan with your doctor, but make sure there is flexibility as you may find you do not require such frequent treatments or as many units of Botox as was initially thought.” “And do ensure you come along for your follow-up visit. It’s so important that you and the doctor are happy that the best results possible have been achieved.”

FASHION DESIGNERS Are multi-skilled

Students and graduates from Ara Institute of Canterbury’s Fashion School are excelling in the industry, due to their unique mix of creative and technical skills. Sophie Dinsenbacher at work at Stolen Girlfriends Club.

W

illiam Roper, in his second year of a Diploma in Fashion Technology and Design, recently took out the Menswear Award at the Hokonui Fashion Design Awards. He puts his success down to the broad range of skills he has gained at Ara. “Succeeding in the industry is not just

about being good at design. You need the skills to research, make patterns, select fabrics and then actually construct the garments. The advantage of this course is that we learn to do all those things,” he says. William would ultimately like to start his own label, but for now he’s looking forward

to gaining more experience with the industry’s best. He undertook a placement with Zambesi this year, which he hopes will lead to an entry-level role. Industry placements provide the opportunity for Ara students to not only gain real-world experience, but also kick off their careers. Graduate Sophie Dinsenbacher secured her first role as the result of a final-year internship with Karen Walker. “The industry work experience part of the qualification was a significant milestone for me. Interning at Karen Walker opened doors. I was offered a full-time role there, starting just three days after our final-year show,” she says. Now working as the Production Manager at Stolen Girlfriends Club, Sophie is also on the cusp of launching a custom, tailored suit company. She says that the technical skills gained through her study have played a huge role in getting to this stage in her career. “Gaining a well-balanced understanding of technical and business skills was invaluable. Having an extensive knowledge of pattern making and construction has been something that I have drawn on every day,” she says.

A PREMIUM FOOD PHILOSOPHY

Chief Executive James Arnott explains, “We really felt Christchurch was missing a premium dining experience that was more vibrant, fun and cheerful and designed for special occasions.”

The luxe décor pays homage to the world’s most fashionable locales.

While there is no absolute definition of what constitutes a ‘premium brand’, the expression is synonymous with excellence. Bessie on Kilmore Street personifies this sentiment.

B

essie was born from the simple yet significant conviction that Christchurch’s hospitality scene was missing certain X factor – a culinary innovation in the form of a restaurant and bar that would push the gastronomic boundaries in looks, feel and function. Bessie has absolutely risen to the challenge since it opened its elegant doors six weeks ago, and the sense of intrigue

and inspiration it is generating shows no sign of abating, and with good reason. The luxe décor pays homage to the world’s most fashionable locales – the exposed brick walls create a NYC loftesque feel while the chic lighting and furniture creates a London vibe. At the heart of the restaurant sits a large, glasswalled dry-aging room that serves as feature and function.

The cuisine is ambitious yet at the same time comforting. With a focus on adventurous meats, the menu is equal parts innovation and inspiration. ake your senses on an adventurous journey of spices and hospitality. Cantabrians are talking about Little India’s new beguiling themed restaurant in Spitfire Square. Shaped like a carriage, with curved ceilings and picture windows, it emulates a moving train. Enter via a waiting platform with vintage suitcases and a well-stocked bar - reminiscent of India’s famous ‘Palace on Wheels’. “The whole ambience is very royal,” says owner Jose Pallippat. Renowned for elegant service and striking authentic tableware, Little India’s also relaxed and friendly - an exquisite combination, just like its flavourful spices. The talented team grinds its own, focusing on taste consistency. Traditional but steadily disappearing charcoal-fired tandoor is very much alive at all the restaurant locations - all reasons for celebrating an impressive 25th anniversary in New Zealand. On Cup Day, 8 November, dressed in your finery or not, continue the festivities with a beautiful dining experience with Jose’s attentive staff. Feminine, fun, frivolous Lynn Woods boutique favours feminine, fun and frivolous dresses for this year’s festivities and Michelle Anderson provides insight and inspiration for Cup and Show week: Embrace the two C’s: comfortability and confidence are key. Ensure your dress fits your body shape ask a girlfriend to critique you, or better still, visit the Stylists at Lynn Woods. Midis and maxis: A-line is a classic, flattering cut and suited to most body shapes. Dress and skirt lengths are considerably longer this season so take your hemline on or below the knee. Head candy: hats and fascinators can be transformative. If you have a long face, shorten it by wearing something that gives you width. For a round face, add length by wearing something tall to give your face height. Flowers and feathers are on trend. Win with pastels, monochrome and print on print: embrace your personality whether it’s classic, bold or edgy. Well heeled: wedges could be your saviour, but must compliment your outfit. Platforms offer feet respite, and if you’re on the lawn, choose heel caps. Trelise Cooper ‘Age of Lace’, $699 – available at Lynn Woods, 149 Victoria Street, Christchurch. And now, Coriander’s is pleased to announce all of its restaurants will have exactly the same menu and prices. The promotion, which is on track to reach over 10,000 entries, simply requires the customer to order a main at one of the restaurants to enter into the draw. The competition closes 31 October and will be drawn soon after at a function at the flagship restaurant on St Asaph Street. A finished product – resplendent in its modern, attractive packaging – belies the hard graft and labour involved to bring it to fruition. The Good Oil, rapidly growing in popularity, is a prime example. The smooth, high-grade, cold-pressed golden rapeseed oil with a subtle, nutty flavour that lends itself to all manner of meals and occasions, sits in an elegantly designed yellow and black bottle, with quite the story to tell. It begins with the hands of experienced farmers who tend to the crop – a sunshine coloured field glowing with potential and cleverly populated with ‘the Good Oil growing here’ signage. Intensive harvesting follows from January to March before parent company, Pure Oil New Zealand, operating a large, commercial size oilseed Crush Plant in Rolleston, becomes the protagonist in the story. Its technological innovation, expert handling and temperature controlled environment takes 17,000 tonnes of seed per annum and turns it into 6,000 tonnes of oil and 10,500 tonnes of meal (high energy and high protein stock feed). Co-owner and Managing Director Nick

Murney reveals, “We bought the Crush Plant in 2012 – following the sell-off of a Solid Energy subsidiary business”. An investment group was formed with Nick Murney and three additional partners Roger Lasham, Midland Seeds and Southern Packers. “It was a great opportunity to repurpose a world class facility for the creation of a high quality vegetable oil.” Now operating at 75 percent of plant capacity, the business’ strategy for the next five years is about managed growth, as well as brand positioning and engaging and responding to customers’ needs and preferences. “We have robust product offerings in oils and meals and are now a retail brand. The Good Oil is stocked in New World, Fresh Choice and Raeward Fresh supermarkets throughout the South Island. Retailers and customers love a Kiwi success story and a product that looks and tastes great.” Fry and roast with it, use it in baked foods, or enjoy it raw as a dip or dressing; it’s difficult to overstate the potential of the Good Oil.

Looking for a fresh New Zealand oil that delivers in the kitchen? Pick up a bottle of the Good Oil • Mild natural flavour and aroma • Versatile and reliable for everyday use. Now available in all good South Island supermarkets.

He is one of the few Authorised Financial Advisers in the country and was the first to receive a Personalised Discretionary Investment Management Services licence from the FMA. “This means I’m authorised to make investment planning decisions and recommendations for my clients, so they don’t have to,” he says. Based in Christchurch, Alistair set up Alistair Bean & Assoc’s Financial Services Limited to offer an individually tailored solution to help his clients achieve their future goals. Financial planning for the short, medium and long-term is very important, he says. “Term deposits are low and are likely to drop further,” he says. “The New Zealand dollar is strong at the moment, so it’s a good idea to diversify and invest offshore as well, instead of putting all your eggs in one basket.” While New Zealanders appear to have never been more wealthy than they are now, another aspect to consider is the fact we are living longer, he says. “After retirement at 65 you need to make sure you have accumulated enough wealth for perhaps another 30 years.” Alistair offers a personalised service and will carry out a wealth and health risk profile to help find a level of investment you are comfortable with. SPORTS FUN ACTIVITIES WHERE TO GO WHAT TO DO HIRE

The event garnered worldwide attention and the record was subsequently broken when, in 2009 22,571 Zombies at 441 events in 33 countries across five continents performed Jackson’s zombie dance, raising more than $100,000 for more than 80 charities.

Like its predecessor, Thrill the World Christchurch will raise funds for charity.

By Melinda Collins

In 1983 Michael Jackson made music history with a 14-minute horror spoof that changed the music industry, if not the world.

T

hriller” remains the most popular and influential music video of all time and his zombie dance has become an annual tribal ritual in major cities around the world, with initiates in ghoul makeup imitating Michael’s moves en masse.

But the idea to create an international event, in which participants simultaneously emulate the dance in the music video of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, came about in 2006 when a group of 62 zombies set a Guinness World Record for Largest Thriller Dance in one location in Canada.

The event—part-charity fundraiser, part-world record attempt—evolved into Thrill the World, one of the world’s largest simultaneous dance events, but this unique event has evolved into so much more than dancing to a 6-minute song. It’s about inspiring others to break down barriers, connecting with people of all religions, race, political and economic persuasions, contributing to helping humanity, encouraging environmental stewardship and encouraging people to step up as leaders, visionaries and creators. This year’s local event will be hosted by the Isaac Theatre Royal and held on 30 October at 11am in the Cathedral Square. Like its predecessor, Thrill the World Christchurch will raise funds for charity, with this year’s proceeds going to YMCA Dancing Like the Stars – a free nine week programme for children at low decile schools who would not normally be able to access recreational dance. If you have ever wanted to dress up as a zombie and dance to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, get in touch with Andrea at thrilltheworldchristchurch@gmail.com. Minifies Makeup is hosting a zombie makeup workshop at the Isaac Theatre Royal on 17 October.

TWO OF THE BEST Some traditions are best left unchanged. For the past 130 years boats have made their way up and down the same stretch of the Avon River. The Antigua Boat Shed still stands, with boats and bikes for hire, and licensed café, The Boat Shed, offering great food in an exceptional setting.

B

ring together two of the best Canterbury traditions with The Boat Shed’s special breakfast menu available from 7am for Cup and Show Week. Take a seat on the covered deck area or outside dining, and choose from pancakes with fresh strawberries and whipped cream served with maple syrup, salmon benedict served with hollandaise on a toasted bagel, or bacon and avocado on toasted rye topped with poached eggs for $22. A complimentary glass of orange or cranberry juice is included, with an

i The

extensive wine list also available. The café is open daily from 7am to 5pm for breakfast and lunch, with café favourites and an extensive cabinet food selection, all made fresh on site. Or take lunch outdoors with one of the picnic baskets by the river side or in the nearby Botanic Gardens. Group bookings are welcome throughout the day, with the venue also available for functions and events, for up to 60 people. Enjoy a BBQ on the deck, or

the cocktail menu – perfect for corporate events and Christmas gatherings. Find Antigua Boat Sheds at 2 Cambridge Terrace, with access also via the pedestrian footbridge from Oxford Terrace. Visit www.boatsheds.co.nz and call 366 5885 for more information.

Crusaders for cleanliness “We are specialists in the sanitation industry and for us only the very best service is good enough.” The Dakins Group, a family business now proudly run by husband and wife team Diane Dakin and Jay Ritchie, is passionate about the reputation they have achieved over some 60 years of providing portable toilet and bathroom facilities for all sorts of events.

T

hroughout any event all our facilities are monitored by service technicians charged with keeping everything in pristine condition. We know that every event is judged on the quality of its portable toilet facilities,” Diane and Jay say. “The biggest events we provide facilities for are the Warbirds over Wanaka Airshow and of course, Christchurch’s famous Cup Week events – the races and the A&P Show. The preparation involved in readying all our equipment and setting everything up on site for Cup Week events takes around two weeks.” The Dakins Group offers everything from single unit portaloos to luxury facilities. They have the South Island’s largest

selection of 20-foot and 40-foot portable toilet and bathroom blocks cementing their place as the region’s foremost supplier to large scale events. The pride and joy of the fleet is a stateof-the-art New Zealand-built deluxe men’s and women’s bathroom block called the ‘Sheraton’ with contemporary vanity areas, full-length mirrors, hand lotion and even hair straighteners. When it comes to significant events involving high volumes of patrons the Dakin Group definitely has the necessary planning, implementation and staffing experience to provide safe, secure sanitation for all guests. To discuss facilities for your event contact the Dakin Group on 384 9100 or 0800 325 467, or email info@dakins.co.nz.

Throughout any event all our facilities are monitored by service technicians charged with keeping everything in pristine condition. “ Diane & Jay

THE POPULARITY OF

PIZZA By Melinda Collins

Fish soup pizza – it may not sound like the most appealing way to enjoy this popular Italian dish, but the unique creation did see its French maker crowned the best pizza-maker in the world after his bouillabaisse pizza won the World Pizza Championships for 2016.

H

eld annually to determine the world’s best pizza makers, the World Pizza Championships has been running since 1991 and, although its winners may sometimes lean a little towards the unconventional like this year’s seafood pizza, it demonstrates that pizza

is no longer the cheap takeaway option it once was. Today gourmet pizzas are gaining in popularity, with some of the city’s most stylish restaurants placing pizza in a prime spot on the menu – though their toppings are undoubtedly more inspiring than the

classic Hawaiian. This year’s winning chef used tomatoes, bream carpaccio, mozzarella, courgette flowers, prawns and Tabasco sauce to create his masterpiece and it’s not even the most elaborate creation to grace the 2016 event. An ornate pizza, topped with courgette flowers and delicate towers of pomme de terre, a pizza featuring Vesuvius style peaks full of molten cheese cream, a nutella and mozzarella specimen and surprisingly there was the classic ham and pineapple, even in Italy of all places. While in the seasonal category there were figs

If you stop and take a look at the way the rest of the world tops their pizza, you’ll quickly see just how unique pizza toppings can be. galore, which may have worked well with a good traditional Parma ham; less so with grapes, mint and balsamic which, yes, was actually an entry! But if you stop and take a look at the way the rest of the world tops their pizza, you’ll quickly see just how unique pizza toppings can be. In Australia, pizza gets topped with kangaroo; in India, paneer makes an appearance, and in the Nordic country of Sweden, their pizza is topped with peanuts, pineapple and curry. The United States and Canada are clearly a little more conventional – at least by our Western standards – with US food delivery app Foodler announcing the top 10 pizza toppings are pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, sausage, bacon, extra cheese, black olives, green peppers, pineapple and spinach.

The

#MAKETHEDIFFERENCE LAUNCH By Nicholas Henare

Vodka has an eastern European history; a mix of water and ethanol, it’s usually 40 percent alcohol.

G

in was our traditional mixer for cocktails until Mr James Bond asked for a ‘Vodka martini shaken not stirred’. Vodka has become the classic base for many a good drink. I often thought that all Vodka is the same. It isn’t. Smirnoff was my first foray into a Vodka experience - on ice, in Sweden. But it was a Dirty Martini at Seven Sushi in Minneapolis that forever stole my heart and made the Vodka Martini my drink of choice. Smooth, clean, cold, and well mixed in the right glass, it’s a work of art. I was invited to Chinwag in Victoria Street to try a few Belvedere Vodka Cocktails,

as in September, Belvedere Vodka revealed the new Belvedere RED Special Edition Bottle to mark the launch of the #MAKETHEDIFFERENCE campaign - the 2016 global RED initiative that aims to raise awareness and funds to fight HIV/ AIDS in Africa. Kiwis can now go RED, and for each bottle sold, Belvedere contributes 50 percent of the profits to the Global Fund - one of the world’s leading financiers of programmes that help mitigate this epidemic. John Legend is Global Ambassador for the #MAKETHEDIFFERENCE campaign. Chinwag is making great Vodka Cocktails with Belvedere. Perhaps you’ll find your signature drink there?

ECLECTIC CUISINE Two words spring to mind the first time you encounter Claude’s Kitchen on Ferry Road – eclectic and engaging.

I

t’s no coincidence that the endearing café makes this sort of impression; it’s exactly what the dedicated owners, Paul and Tom, aspired to create. Their ‘no nonsense approach’ when it comes to the cuisine translates to a range that is fresh and filling with a price tag attached that won’t break the bank. “Our specialty is home-made staples – everything is made here on site and we aim to have something for everyone,” Paul explains. This diversity extends to a vegan selection with two different types of vegan pies, sweet treats (cheesecake!) and muffins all made daily along with sumptuous lentil dal hummus and vegan nachos. The duo even prepares its own mayonnaise and roasts its own meat for those special and unique finishing touches. “Tom is our cook and I serve front of house so we can play to our strengths.

Hospitality has always been something I have done; likewise Tom’s love of cooking has been influenced by his family. It works really well.” Extending its opening hours to include Saturdays from this week, customers can delight in great food against a quirky, inspiring backdrop, which includes an outdoor courtyard area. “We actually grow our own produce in this area – last year we got eight litres of juice from the grapevine.” Authentic and accessible, Claude’s Kitchen is a great home away from home for those who value unpretentious but delicious dining with organic, fair trade Upshot Coffee, and, on the odd occasion, an open kitchen where Tom will showcase his skills for those interested.

A culinary beauty for the ages There would be few restaurants that could rival the Yamagen’s reputation, lineage and exquisite, authentic cuisine.

A

n impressive and illustrious 25year history in the Christchurch hospitality scene has been earned by a dedicated team that truly lives and breathes the fine Japanese food and service philosophy that the restaurant is so well regarded for. A loyalist to authentic Japanese ingredients and recipes, the Yamagen found its new home on Victoria Street following the Canterbury Earthquakes. Despite the forced relocation from The Crown Plaza, the Yamagen’s extended family - its customers – have not stopped coming with the tradition of family dining transcending many generations. Restaurant Manager Jane says, “Some of our diners have introduced their grandchildren to the Yamagen and so we have three generations coming. We try to make our food accessible for customers while retaining a very high quality. We have our early bird special of $38 and have starters beginning at $5.50, like miso soup.

A beautiful example of how cuisine with a genuine heart will survive the test of time.

Our sashimi is also very popular – it is so fresh.” Using recipes from Japan that are more than 25 years old, the Yamagen is a beautiful example of how cuisine with a

genuine heart will survive the test of time. “We are very committed to the Japanese way and haven’t tried to Westernise our cuisine in the way others have. We don’t use MSG, we use olive oil, and we have probably the only Kiwi Japanese Chef in New Zealand, Jason.” A member of the multi-cultural staff for 16 years, Jason is a culinary artist. Experience his talent and the Yamagen way from 5.30pm to late Monday through Saturday. Prebookings for the restaurant are required.

Eat in genuine Italian family style with genuine Italian food made by our genuine Italian owner Try the exciting new additions to our menu including Schiacciata (skiah-CHA-tah) – a delicious Italian pizza alternative. (A hand stretched Tuscan flatbread loaded with toppings & packed with taste)

the chilly months can be packed away and replaced with a lighter palette. Even if you supplement your existing palette with new complementary or contrasting colours, this will invigorate your home and elevate your mood. For example, while my forest green sixties leather couch draped in rugged sheepskins is perfect for winter, by replacing the sheepskins with cushions in dusky pinks and floral patterns, the dark couch is instantly transformed to reflect the seasonal change. This approach to textiles works equally well in the bedroom. Artwork is another way to refresh your interiors, especially if they have particularly seasonal themes. Landscapes depicting frigid arctic scenes may be just the ticket to recreate a winter wonderland indoors during the cooler months, but come springtime you may wish to swap out cooler scenes with warmer ones. For the finishing touch introduce scented candles or luxury essential oils and diffusers with fruity or floral fragrances. Indulge your senses on all levels for the ultimate joy of living this season.

Revitalise interiors with nature’s best Edited excerpt by Majka Kaiser

In this new book by Isabelle Palmer you will learn how to choose, grow, and decorate with house plants, as well as guide you through the different techniques needed to care for your new “green guests.”

Get your copy of House Plants: How to look after your indoor plants: with helpful advice, step-by-step projects, and inventive planting ideas by Isabelle Palmer, published by CICO Books from all good book stores.

1.

Position plants carefully Choose plants that suit the environment, since even the most dedicated gardener can’t make a sun-loving plant thrive in a cold, shady area. So, ensure that your plants are suited to the light levels and temperature of the room in which they’ll be positioned.

2.

Avoid direct sun Windowsills in direct sunlight will be too hot for most house plants. Also, don’t place house plants over direct sources of heat, such as radiators.

4. 3.

Avoid shady areas Ensure there is sufficient light for your house plants to photosynthesize effectively.

Pot on regularly Aim to repot your house plants into larger pots every two years or so. This will ensure that they are not stressed and will thrive.

5.

Water wisely Don’t over water house plants; adding some drainage material at the bottom of the pot will help to keep roots aerated and ensure that they don’t drown.

7.

Think long term Some popular house plant gifts only have a short growing period, so choose plants that will thrive for longer if you want a year-round display.

6.

8. 10.

9.

Avoid temperature extremes Keep delicate plants away from drafts, since these will decrease humidity levels. Be well equipped Use the proper tools for indoor gardening. A long-spouted watering can and a mister to increase humidity are both essential for reducing dust levels, as well as dealing with pest and disease outbreaks. A longhandled fork and a pair of scissors are great for accessing difficult areas, while a sponge attached to a long handle will keep glass containers clean.

Be vigilant Learn to recognise potential problems early on, before a pest infestation or other physiological problem kills off your plant. Winter dormancy Allow house plants to rest during the winter period and move them to a cooler position, but away from windows that will be too cold, as they won’t require as much sunlight at this time. You should also reduce the amount of water and food you provide, as this can help prevent disease.

owever, move over compact rows of petite rosebuds, it’s time for big, billowy peony petals and all grandiose queens of the garden. Vivacious granny florals have made a comeback - and they are no shrinking violets. Fashion front-liners such as Vivienne Westwood have embraced the theme with magnificently sized dusky roses on her collection of rugs and cushions. Add to the potential list, lounge suites, headboards, wallpaper, chairs, ottomans, prints, vases, window-seat cushions or even the duvet cover - it can all turn graciously granny. Choose from any colour palette and admire the accompanying green foliage. Updating with striking floral curtains, to frame windows looking out to a lawn or patio, combines decorative purpose with practicality. And drawn at night, they bring new drama into the room. It might be refreshing to shop for plain cushions for a change, to tone with your flowery couch. However, the excuse is there to embellish in the whole bouquet. Floral fabric also has the discrete

For shy wallflowers, even a token tea towel or great aunt’s botanically loud tablecloth can still set the scene this spring. CONCRETE CREATIVITY The team at Flash Concrete can transform concrete into something magical.

P

eople’s preconceptions of what this material looks like can be completely turned upside down when they see all the colours and textures that it is possible to create from this natural material. Cory and Jocelyn Grant are passionate about opening customers’ eyes to the range of options and showing customers how easy

The team uses this product in a whole range of applications to resurface existing damaged, worn or cracked concrete to give it a completely new lease of life.

it is to change their environments through the use of specialised concrete products. “Now that it is spring and the weather is beginning to get warmer people are opening up their doors and wanting to spend time outside again,” Jocelyn says. “But perhaps that patio or deck is looking a little tired and worse for wear. At Flash Concrete we have a cost-effective solution to this situation which is quick to achieve and does not involve laying new concrete or building a new deck.” That solution is a decorative concrete system unique to Flash Concrete, a versatile overlay product made up of high-strength cements, selected sands and top quality polymers that make it hard-wearing and durable as well. Cory calls it “concrete on steroids” because all the ingredients make it so strong. The concrete overlay process is very convenient because it is laid on top of existing concrete doing away with the disruption and mess of excavation. At Flash Concrete, the team uses this product in a whole range of applications to resurface existing damaged, worn or cracked concrete to give it a completely new lease of life. “We can repair an area that may have a number of cracks, but the depth and width of the cracks does have a bearing on what can and cannot be repaired. Then a designer top-coat is installed. This is where the magic happens because that top-coat can give the look of slate tile, granite, brick, stone or even timber.”

Concrete magician Cory uses specialised equipment, including handheld scribing tools and trowels as well as sprayed-on colour washes to achieve the transformation. In the eye of the beholder concrete has become timber – or tile or granite. Borders and custom motifs can also be added – people might like their family crest inlaid in their patio or driveway. “Architects and designers love the fact that we can also take most colours from a home’s decor and have the concrete overlay tinted to match. The technique to do this is exclusive to us at Flash Concrete.” Flash Concrete is known as the expert in the field of concrete overlays and to achieve the optimum result with this product does require experts. “We have developed distinctive systems with cutting-edge techniques that include combining a number of products to create a stunning outcome tailored to the style of our customers’ individual projects.” Flash Concrete’s display centre is located at 9 Innes Road, Merivale. Phone 03 595 2079 or email sales@flashconcrete.co.nz. You can also take a good look through the website www.flashconcrete.co.nz to see what is on offer. Take a journey into the countless possibilities of decorative concrete. Flash Concrete’s will be at the Canterbury Homeshow this month at the Horncastle arena, Friday 14 October – Sunday 16 October. Design 5 Upholstery for all upholstering needs.

uriosa is a collision of Sacha Coogan’s and Ezra Weaver’s creative dreams. It began when Graham Weaver retired from Cheviot’s White Cat Emporium, passing his antique-obsessed genes and contacts in provincial France and Italy to son Ezra. Sacha, a freelance graphic designer, then added imagination and flowers. Facing a poplar-framed lucern field, the transformed containers have become a light-filled space that is quite spellbinding. Antiquities start from the quaintly quirky through to wrought iron day beds with hand-sprung, wool-filled mattresses in French fabric. There’s also locally designed gifts perfect for Christmas. Whilst living in Sweden (hence the shop’s Swedish name for curiosities), Ezra was impressed with Europe’s public spaces where families spent the entire day. This is their future vision, beginning with a boutique coffee cart. In keeping with all things curious, Bill Murray, resident cat, will be offering a nonchalant welcome into this relaxed, cosy, intriguing abode. Kuriosa is open Friday to Sunday from 10am at 430 Springs Road, Prebbleton. Email hello@kuriosanz.com or follow the team on Facebook or Instagram.

Apartment living

spaces and faces connecting

Apartment living is nothing new. It has been happening for as long as dense cities have existed. What has changed is our understanding of them and the richness that they can add to a city and its inhabitants.

N

o longer a series of isolated environments where strangers live side-by-side, apartment complexes are now lively networks of social spaces connecting the occupiers with each other, and the external environment. As Stufkens + Chambers Architects

Director Steven Chambers explains, “Urban living and working is a continual shift between retreat and social connection. These experiences can be choreographed through design or can occur through happenstance. We try to create an environment where both can occur.”

Apartment complexes are networks of social spaces connecting the occupiers with each other, and the external environment.

“We call them ‘social landscapes’, seeking out sun and connection with communal outdoors spaces. We are drawn to these spaces, allowing for positive public social interactions - spaces that are small enough to be intimate and also large enough for solitary connection.” While tapping into all that a city centre may offer, the simple pleasures of architecture must also be there; quality of light, emotion, materials, space, and a sense of who we are and where we are going. Not only do apartments need to be practical, liveable housing for the individual, they must be relevant to their surroundings and integrate well into the streets and neighborhood, creating a sense of community that everyone feels a privilege to be a part of. O

ffering an international platform on which to experience architecture as a built environment, the La Biennale di Venzia, or the Venice Biennale, is a forum of education and inspiration. For my colleague, and I, it was a forum which added a third dimension to the glossy pictures, web-based seminars and articles that we typically refer to. The curated exhibition is comprised of over a hundred participants, one third of which are countries and two-thirds are

invited architectural practices, from all around the world - invited to present their work and theories in a curated manner. While we spent two days at the Biennale, and failed to see it all, there was one exhibition that I found particularly interesting when thinking about Christchurch, and the rebuild of our city. For international practice, Grafton, their exhibition presented their work in civic spaces in Peru and the underlying concept of understanding how we can

This is a great opportunity and a wonderful way in which to direct people through the city. best inhabit the left over spaces – the gaps between buildings. They believed that ‘the spaces in between are a luxury that cold countries can’t afford’. Reflecting on this concept in the laneways and wide piazzas of Italy, it is immediately apparent that these are comfortable spaces to be in. They are activated and bought to life by the sheer number of people who occupy them, and importantly, the climate.

So, can we in Christchurch, afford the places in-between? Does our climate offer the opportunity to capitalise on, and utilise them? While we are not a cold country like those in the Baltic region with harsh winters, neither are we are a hot place like Dubai. Ultimately, we are far from the Mediterranean environment that offers innovative utilisation of these outdoor spaces. The suburban mall is one example of how we have adapted for our climate. It is

the 21st century high street. We occupy this space in the same way as a high-end shopping street in Florence. However it lacks the character and ambience that you would find in its outdoor equivalent. There are not many opportunities in which to sit back, soak in the atmosphere and relax with a chianti in the Mall. Consider the laneways being established in the South Frame. This is a great opportunity and a wonderful way in which to direct people through the city, but are we forcing an engagement with these external spaces in order to achieve a utopian approach to rebuilding the city? If you close your eyes, you can visualise how the laneways, the spaces in between, may feel: the sun shining, a light northwest breeze, friends and a relaxing atmosphere. But, while the friends and a sense of atmosphere will remain, the reality of Christchurch is that even in the height of summer, we can have four seasons in one day and a howling easterly. Just perhaps, we are trying to create something that is not fully informed by the local environment and setting. Making success that much harder as a result. Although, perhaps I will be surprised and Christchurch will prove Grafton wrong: that space in between is a luxury that cold countries can afford. I for one will be watching with interest. www.caarc.co.nz

Planting the seed for a

stylish garden We know it’s spring when we have four seasons in one day - that‘s what we love about this time of the year.

W

e love too that on the best days of Adrian, Sandee, the season we can get back into our gardens and enjoy the feel of soil as we plant new and exciting specimens. Whether we are planning a new garden or revamping an old one McSaveney’s Nursery has everything we need to create a stylish contemporary look or a more formal classic style. Over the next few months flowering perennials will be doing their thing beautifully and trees will be bursting into life. McSaveney’s Nursery has a great selection of maples, flowering cherries, mop tops, magnolias and michelias catering to customers’ needs for evergreen and deciduous trees. These trees have been selected keeping in mind what is more suitable for the smaller sections and courtyards that are becoming the ‘norm’ today. Standards are also

as popular as ever along with a strong move towards fresh new look grasses such as the lomandra varieties, which are compact in their growth habit and do not have the issue of brown thatching like grasses of old. McSaveney’s Nursery grows about 80% of its own plants. This means they can control quality and size as well as keeping costs down. Justin, Carolyn, Sandee and Michelle are always on hand at the nursery to give advice and to go through plans with customers so they can create the garden of their dreams and spend the summer months outside in their own piece of paradise. provide easy access with an automatic opening option. I did find that a little distracting when looking through the rear vision mirror, but the increased size on the wing mirrors helped me move past that. The dash access was easy when it came to loading my iPhone. Navigating while driving the Clubman is a little trickier with your dial controller and push button option between the seats, but you get used to it. The sound options for warnings are pretty 1980s video game, although that’s quirky, like Mini. The numbers speak volumes - 100kw, 1499cc, 0-100kph in 9.1. Low slung seating with sturdy steering and all the bells and whistles from engine idle turn off, to keyless access, make for a real beauty. Added bonuses include a light that beams onto the ground at night, like the bat signal; a Mini log so you can check your keys – loved that; a rain

A Mini Metamorphosis By Nicholas Henare

All the bells and whistles make for a real beauty.

Mini has come to the party with something that isn’t Mini.

W

hat’s surprised me and my friends who have seen the Mini Clubman while I’ve been driving it is the room. ‘A stretched Limo Mini’ was the comment, and it kind of stuck with me. Limo comfort and Limo design. Increased length and width means Mini has also expanded the interior. Cupboard rear doors

detector and a driver’s seat that lets you fold back and take a nap comfortably (yes I did!) In short, it’s cute, driveable, and efficient. Starting at $39,000, the Mini isn’t mini on options. You can personalise it with even more bling if you want. Driving it around I noticed just how many there were on the road and I had the odd feeling I wanted to wave at them and say, ‘Hey look, I’m driving one too!’ That’s a feeling I haven’t had in a while. Jeff Grey in Manchester Street has them there are a couple of small car options that have changed my mind about owning one, and this is definitely one of them.

THE ULTIMATE IN LUXURY: Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 By Nicholas Henare

Every August classic car fans from around the world converge on Pebble Beach in California for a very special beauty contest.

T

his gathering of magnificent classic cars is the perfect place to premiere the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, a sensational luxury-class coupé. A flashback to the opulent 1920s, the model oozes style and luxury. It’s not just beautiful at face value; it has an unbelievable power to it. Measuring almost six metres in length, it’s designed as an electric car. The drive system has an output of 550 kW (750 hp)

and the shallow underfloor battery allows a range of over 500 kilometres. The classic aesthetic of the show car – the extremely long bonnet, the low roof line and the rearward positioning of the greenhouse – recall the aero coupés of days gone by. Retro is not the objective with the design though, rather it channels a sophisticated and on-point design reinterpretation of classic, aesthetic principles.

It’s a type of synergistic relationship between automobile model and mankind that defies the limits of the imagination. Clearly defined contours and organically formed wings stand in contrast to the sharply drawn, extended feature line on each side which defines the upper vehicle body from the radiator grille across the entire length of the vehicle to the rear. Below this, the main body has a bulging, muscular look, extending across the entire flank. There is also a striking contrast between the Maybach red paintwork and the chrome strips which sit above

the wheel arches and in the centre of the bonnet and boot lid. The front windscreen fulfils its functional and aesthetic potential serving as a transparent display: driving-related data and geographical information is shown across its full width, augmenting the outside world with additional information. This information is defined by almost futuristic innovation as it can be controlled and adjusted by the occupants using gestures.

The luxury padded leather upholstery is a particular highlight. Its traditional look is combined with future technology here - the buttons which would normally be trimmed in leather have been replaced in the upholstered surfaces by miniature “body sensor displays”. These scan the passengers and monitor, for example, their vital functions. As a result, comfort features such as seat climate or the massage function can be activated or the seat settings adjusted to the passenger. It’s functional beauty in action. Sensors embedded discreetly in the upholstery also record the incidence of light, the colour of the occupant’s clothing and the ambient temperature. This information can be used to trigger new, emotional lighting effects in the interior. It’s a type of synergistic relationship between automobile model and mankind that defies the limits of the imagination. The concept car aims to embody the ultimate in luxury, and this is underlined by the fact that the driver can switch to digital/autonomous mode. This is a car that personifies science fiction. Needless to say, the realms of current technology are being pushed and integrated to such an extent it does feel like the sky’s the limit. Personally, I’d like a massage chair and I’d LOVE a car that has one.

Tiger

The road By Nicholas Henare

I have a hectic life ranging from real estate and writing, through to fulfilling parental duties and meeting the demands of a packed social calendar.

M

anaging these various obligations involves all sorts of requirements from my vehicle and the Volkswagen Tiguan I got my hands on recently rose to the challenge. There are several versions, but I had the pleasure of putting the TSI Highline, 132 kw through its paces. Quick, grunty and with attractive features, I came to like it a lot. Firstly, and I’ve said it before, the interactive dash on ALL this year’s Volkswagen’s I’ve tried is exceptional. It’s the benchmark I judge all other cars against. I love its ease of access from

my iPhone and the easy to navigate system. The dash boasts clean and strong lines and the seating arrangement on all of the vehicles is great. Better still, the Tiguan has a couple of extras. There are tray tables in the back seat with individual chargers that any parent with children who like using devices or eating on the run will love. The automatic opening boot with touch button close is something that took me a couple of ‘Oh yeah’s’ before I realised how great that option is. The front passenger seat folds down front ways so when you fold down

the back seat you can load something extra-long into the car. You can get roof racks for the vehicle, but I like this feature as an option for storage. Volkswagen crossed the word Tiger and Iguana to get Tiguan and on the road the vehicle really does live up to its namesake with great prowess. Lots of power, good to drive, and economical. If it’s family, business or loading the friends into the car for a trip to Akaroa without feeling like sardines, the Volkswagen Tiguan ticks all my boxes for a great all-rounder. With prices ranging from $41,990, it’s very good bang for buck.

A distinguished

Gentleman’s

RIDE By Nicholas Henare

You clean your classic motorcycle, you put on your classic suit, you groom your hair and you hit the road to join other likeminded souls on the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride.

M

otorcycle riders from across the city took to the streets in dapper duds on 25 September to raise money for solutions to two key men’s health challenges. The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was launched in 2012 in Sydney with 2,500 riders in 64 cities. Support has grown rapidly over the past four years, with almost 27,000 riders registered for the 2016 Ride. Local organiser Andy Burchall of motorcycle dealership First European explains that all the funds raised here and abroad are directed at prostate cancer research and suicide prevention programmes through official charity partner The Movember Foundation.

Burchall cites the Barber Queue fundraiser the day before the ride as one such idea that fits in with the event’s aim of raising money while celebrating classic custom motorcycles and the art of being dapper. The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is described by the organisers as a niche charity event “with gentlefolk riding their Café Racer, Bobber, Classic, Tracker, Scrambler, Old School Chopper, Modern Classic, Sidecar, Classic Scooter and Brat Styled motorcycles”. I’m not sure if I would describe myself either as a Gentleman, nor distinguished! But the whole idea is that motorcycle fans like myself get together for a worthy cause. Well done to Andy Burchall and the team at first European.

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was launched in 2012 in Sydney with 2,500 riders in 64 cities.
