ith Canterbury Fashion Week next week, and our latest cover a fashionable nod to what we can expect from this year's show, I've been thinking quite a lot about the subject. Generating billions of dollars per annum in New Zealand, fashion is the untameable beast at the heart of consumer culture. The chameleon like nature of the industry keeps loyalists to 'what's hot and what's not' on their toes, and leaves the rest of us who consider ourselves a 'work in progress' rather perplexed. All of this 'threads and kicks' talk has inspired some nostalgic and rather cringeinducing memories for me as I reflect on my style – or rather unstylish evolution. It would be difficult to determine which of the styles I donned as a kid of the eighties and nineties eras deserves the 'most heinous' fashion faux pas title. My obsession with unflattering fabrics; oversized, wideleg jeans, and tie-dye leggings with slouch socks spring to mind as does a denim 'cowgirl' styled dress covered in sequins, which I picked up second-hand shopping with my Mum and wore to the point of its extinction. That was a sad day in our household. I also can't forget the pink, patent leather heels that my friend and I wore on girls' nights out. My preoccupation with heeled shoes (no longer the case these days) in fact started at around the age of six when I begged my parents for my own pair of 'clip clops'. I still vividly remember when they took me to buy them. I think I probably insisted on sleeping in them such was the love of these $20 white, pointed heels with bows on. I’m not sure when I stopped practicing self-care, but I suspect it came The interesting thing about a lot of the styles we have banished to the back of soon after becoming someone’s mummy 12 years ago. back in vogue when style our minds/wardrobes is that they find themselves royalists decide to give them a second wind. Ultimately, fashion is an extremely subjective, personal thing, but I believe one of the best parts about donning something you feel really proud of, is the confidence injection. Despite being somewhat of a Tomboy these days, I know I wish I could attribute this exclusively to an improved also love the feeling that comes over me when wearing a beautiful garment. appreciation of the superfluous nature of taking time out for a I hope reading through some of the not-so-fashionable hallmarks of my youth facial or reading a book in the bathsome when there is fun with littlies provides great conversation starters this weekend as you share some of to be had. your own sartorial sins with friends and family.

But rather the time is chewed up by an insatiable ‘need’ to get through the housework, ticking things off a mental to-do list as I race towards the end of another busy day. I struggle to unwind until the housework is done, which is a little bit of a conundrum when I share said space with three kids and three dogs – the housework is never done! I know I’m not the only one to be subconsciously cajoled into thinking that an imperfect home is an imperfect life. The digital era does little to dissuade the feelings of inadequacy because, although it’s been said that a picture tells a thousand words, paradoxically when it comes to social media – where those pictures are constructed, edited and curated – a picture seldom tells the whole story. The virtual lens enables us to idealise every moment, creating a highlight reel of life to share with friends and family. Welcoming someone else into your life – whether it’s a new partner or small humans – it becomes all too easy to feel one has to justify the time or expense takes to look after one’s self. 4 April 21,it2016 Metropol So make a cuppa and curl up with your copy of Metropol. After all, a life full of housework is a life less lived.

ARCHITECTURAL INDIVIDUALITY ‘A new house that fits your individual personality and lifestyle’ – you’ve no doubt heard that and similar claims and perhaps been somewhat sceptical. But at Weir Architecture, when they say they design houses that reflect their clients’ lifestyles, this isn’t a mere claim – it’s reality.

A

s Robert Weir says, “For us, listening to what our clients want and taking the time to fully understand them, their lifestyle and their requirements is absolutely crucial to producing designs that fulfil the brief”. “Each project we are presented with is taken on its own merits. We do not force preconceived ideas on to clients.” At Weir Architecture, the team designs houses from the inside out, taking into account whether the designs are for a couple with a family,

empty nesters, or for people for whom a relaxed social environment is the paramount criterion. All these variables can have a significant effect on the placement of rooms in a house. The constraints of each site are also carefully considered, so a house is positioned to maximise the sun and minimise the effects of Christchurch’s pesky winds. “Adding value to the concepts clients have in mind and offering them the highest level of dedication and professionalism, is at the heart of everything we do.”

Because we Kiwis love the outdoors, Weir Architecture often works closely with landscape architects during the design and early construction stage, so the external environment too reflects clients’ lifestyles. “The outdoor spaces are not simply add-ons. They are integrated into the total design.” There are examples of Weir Architecture’s work on their Facebook page www.facebook.com/ weirarchitecture. You can contact them on 03-377 4900 or by email info@weirarchitecture.co.nz.

The normal spring house selling season has been delayed this year due to the September election however, the signs are that it is now moving into full swing.

Y

ou, as a homeowner, may have been confused as to whether or not to sell your home in the near future. But if you have made the decision to sell, how do you make your property stand out from the competition and ensure you get the best the market will pay for it? Real estate specialist Cindy-Lee Sinclair knows marketing is one of the critical components to get the right result. “A good marketing strategy is vital. Vendors need to invest in marketing in order to maximise their return. So, it’s really important to choose an agent who understands all the various marketing platforms – from the traditional paper-based forms, to the various on-trend social media applications.” Cindy- Lee says that much of a marketing approach depends on good photography to show a house to its very best advantage. “Most agents work with photographers they trust to capture the essence of a home. But, if a vendor wants to select their own photographer, I would advise that they choose someone who has experience in photographing houses. Putting videos of a property online is also a great way to give a sense of walking through a house without actually being there.” Marketing is not only about media platforms. It can be as basic as the way vendors present a house to potential buyers. “I often work with house staging companies. Even if a house is fully furnished, these experts can give advice about decluttering an environment, about where to place furniture for the optimum effect and about accessorising for impact. Adding art to walls, for instance, can make a huge difference.” Cindy-Lee’s experience has taught her that vendors should discuss their ideas and plans with their agent and work out a clear strategy to ensure the best outcome for the sale of their most valuable asset. You can contact Cindy-Lee on (03) 355 6677, or 0274 888 616. Email cindy.sinclair@harcourts.co.nz.

one on one At face value, talent would be the sole prerequisite qualification for a career in fashion. But it’s proven time and time again that passion and hard work are needed in equal measure.

ith Halle Berry, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, Cate Blanchett, Megan Gale and Elle Macpherson donning her designs, Collette Dinnigan has the lay of the fashion land all sewn up. We talk to the design darling about her stylish evolution.

What was it about the fashion and design industry that inspired you to enter it? Working with textiles actually inspired me to enter the fashion industry. I had a very creative upbringing and always appreciated art, colour and fabric, I used to sew my own clothes as a teenager, plus I did a lot of work in graphics and painting.

How would you describe your style evolution? My style has definitely become less fussy and more practical. When I work, I need comfortable and spacious clothes as I’m always up a ladder or on the floor. I have spent the last 20 years of my life going to events, openings and cocktail parties so it’s quite a relief to have the freedom to now prioritise being comfortable.

Can you tell us about your new designer children’s eyewear range and what this means to you? The Spirited collection is very special to me as my own daughter has to wear glasses, the frames are fun but practical and have been designed with children’s face shapes in mind. I didn’t want to create a collection that was super fashion forward or trend orientated, I wanted to try and capture the daily life of a child as well as making a tween feel as though they can have the sense of choice in what they would like to wear. You’ve received the Order of Australia for your services to fashion, what do you see as your career highlight? A definite career highlight for me was being invited to show on the prestigious Paris schedule by the Chambre Syndicale Committee of fashion. It was very frightening at the time as Paris doesn’t take any prisoners, but the show was a creative, and commercial success and I was invited to join the Committee. I’m proud that I survived and maintained my position in the industry.

How has this style evolution been shaped by your life and experiences? My style evolution has definitely been shaped by having access to great museums, art and travel. This access has defined a lot of my thoughts and provided me with direction and influence. I think it’s about passion too, every year that passion could change and I might see something and get excited about it, then it might become intertwined into my style.

How does a day in your life look these days? A typical day is getting up early when the sun rises, getting breakfast ready for the children, taking them to school, walking the dogs with my husband and spending half an hour discussing adult things, then it’s coffees and juice, jumping on my emails and hoping the internet is working on high speed. Currently I’m the guest editor of Vogue Living – so working on that, perhaps plant something in the garden, picking the children from school, cooking dinner, then phone calls to Europe – there’s never enough time in the day!

Where do you draw your inspiration from for new collections? I get very inspired by spring in the UK and France where the gardens are just magical. You’ll find a lot of floral in my collections because of this. Every year I think it changes, I never try and send a message out, but I think subconsciously, we draw from what’s going on in the world, whether it’s politics, travel, art, or exhibitions. It’s a greater sphere that we’re not always aware of, I think my process is much more about editing and funnelling that into a collection that I feel is at the forefront of my mind.

What are you looking forward to in the future – career or otherwise? My husband and I are about to launch our rental property portfolio, Dinnigan Cocks, for creative and unique homes, so I’m really looking forward to that! We’d also love to design a hotel together in the future, working with a developer to create something luxury, but relaxed with beautiful interiors. Collette Dinnigan’s new Spirited eyewear collection for girls is now available exclusively at Specsavers.

eld on Wednesday November 22, from 10am to 4pm, Methven Racecourse will be completely transformed, with the same number of quality stalls as last year already confirmed. “So 2017 is shaping up to be bigger and better,” Denise says. Held on a Wednesday, it encourages a midweek break, or an extra-long weekend; there’s plenty of accommodation available locally and, with Christmas just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to shop. Boutique stallholders and well-known businesses from throughout the South Island are returning this year and there will be some new products on offer too – everything from food and wine, to jewellery, clothing, pet accessories, arts and crafts. “Methven is such a magical setting. We’re excited to attract new people to this area, to rediscover or be introduced to the beauty of the landscape, our people and their art, creativity, talent, and our awesome hospitality,” Denise says. More than $2,000 was donated to charitable organisations last year, with this year’s funds supporting the Methven Care Trust. Espresso Carwash offers an affordable and diverse service, resulting in a better and safer result than automated car washes. Open seven days a week, Espresso Carwash provides a range of vehicle detailing, from an express wash to a fully detailed groom with additional services including interior shampoo, wax and polish, leather treatment, company vehicle de-stickering, odour eliminator and fleet and corporate services available, and gift vouchers are very popular. The brand’s strong growth is evidence there was a gap in the market for this concept and Espresso Carwash is filling the fap perfectly.

THE COLD SHOULDER

f showing some skin is a sartorial sin in your fashion rule-book, select a smaller split. But with shoulder exposed and upper arm covered; just the merest flash of clavicle; or whole shoulder and upper arm exposed options also available, there really is something for everyone. A sweet springtime silhouette, it’s taking many forms. The look has been translated into dresses, jumpsuits, even bridal gowns and swimwear. Whether for dressy or casual, sweatshirts, collared-shirts, denim tops and floaty spring staples too have been rocking the off the shoulder look, so it’s certainly a trend you shouldn’t turn a cold should to. With so many fresh iterations of the trend, whether you want to keep it demure or peacock with volume, colour, and a bit—or a lot—of skin, there’s something for every comfort level. So, check out our shop the look for a sartorial selection that made the cut.

LIVING CATWALK By Liesl Johnstone

Coco Chanel once famously said, ‘To be memorable, one must always be different’.

I

t’s a good thought to grasp, when you’ve dressed yourself for the day and are tempted to tone your look down somehow. The other option is to add another accessory and step out with confidence. The latter’s the secret ingredient which makes almost any ensemble appear completely sorted. It’s the sass we love, when we’re watching celeb style in another cosmos like Los Angeles or London. We might think pyjamas with stilettos or bikinis with ugg-boots are fetching combos, but what we’re really admiring is the devil-may-care attitude; the complete lack of self-consciousness. And in our buying habits, there’s evidence of an interesting new

phenomenon going on, according to some undercover Christchurch research. According to boutique owners, some of us fear being over-dressed. We worry about dressing our age. Maybe we should just forget about our own pre-set rules and have fun instead. One large Christchurch workplace has instituted ‘Thursday-tie-wearing-day,’ just so that staff are permitted some crazy or sophisticated self-expression toward the end of the week. The answer this spring and summer is to do ‘dressy’ flamboyantly. Employ contrasts in approach. For instance, a perfectly precisely made-up mouth looks superb with ‘undone’ hair. That principle.

• Throw together items that normally wouldn’t be on speaking terms. Like a tan leather belt over a vivid-hued patent coat. Belts are big this spring and summer, even with chiffony, balletic layers. No need to match them to the outfit either. • Wear ruffles, especially lacy ruffles with anything, absolutely anything. With gumboots or jandals, if you like. • Use your nighty for day-wear, with something seemly over the top. • Wear your clothes slightly off-centre; particularly off one shoulder. • Put anything striped, flounced, fringed, feathery, beaded or embroidered in the prime wardrobe grab-me spot. • Get a tiny shoulder bag or two. As arty, pretty and pimped up as possible. • Trousers are long and extra wide at the base. Pair them with a dramatic platform heel if you dare. • Still wear it if it’s huge and swamps you. Oversized clothes are still big (no pun intended).

wickedly different Halloween approaches yet again and for many this can mean a feeling of dread as invitations to fancy dress parties flood your inbox. isions of tacky plastic accessories and garish makeup can send even the most hardened fashionista into despair. But fear not, this Halloween we give you the trendy girl’s guide to fancy dress parties. Inspired by local operatic society Showbiz Christchurch’s recent announcement of their 2018 show line-up, including Broadway hit and Wizard of Oz origin/ epilogue story Wicked, we’ve put together a few pieces to create two very different looks for witchy-minded style queens. The only question now is ‘are you a good witch, or a bad witch?’ Wicked features two very different witches; Glinda (aka Galinda) the Good Witch and Elphaba the Wicked Witch. Glinda is good through and through but that doesn’t mean she can’t be a little bit provocative. Channel her look with creamy dreamy fabrics, a pale shimmering palette, and a little bit of sparkle. Elphaba is dark and sultry but there’s a depth of feeling that reaches well below the surface. Her sparkling green eyes show there’s more there than you think. Delve into your darkest depths with Elphaba and get green with envy on the lips, play with sultry shades in your hair and some killer black heels. And if this inspires you, then make sure to check out Showbiz Christchurch’s production of Wicked next April, tickets are on sale now at ticketek.co.nz/showbiz.

Revolutionary change in

DENTISTRY

Duxton Dental has provided more than twenty years of leading-edge dentistry. Its latest high-tech addition is the Trios Scanner, which is proving a game changer for the team and their patients.

T

he Trios intra-oral 3D scanner does away with taking an impression of the patient’s teeth using a plastic mould, which is becoming a thing of the past at Duxton Dental when measuring for crowns, bridges and implants. This new 3D technology also means there are no impressions needed for Invisalign, the near invisible removable aligners – an improved, aesthetic alternative to wearing clunky braces. The Trios digital scanner creates both a more pleasant experience and accurate results. Completely doing away with an uncomfortable gooey mess, it is a lot less intrusive, and therefore diminishes the commonly experienced and unpleasant gag-reflex. “The scanner makes it easier to communicate with our patients as they can see their mouth and teeth in three dimensions and realistic colour,” says Dentist Grahame Dutton, who co-owns the forward-thinking dentistry practice with Christine Duxbury. From a 3D, digital display on a large colour screen, he can explain exactly what’s going on to his patients. “This is

a super-accurate technique that has not been seen before in dentistry. The process is far more efficient, so our turn-around is faster.” Trios also cleverly integrates with Digital Smile Design. “This is where a scan of your teeth is integrated into a full photo of your face. Then through digital software we can show you how your face and smile would look if we applied ideal colour and shape to your teeth.” Co-Founder of 3Shape in Copenhagen, Tais Clausen, was instrumental in the award-winning Trios scanner’s development. He says the accuracy of digital impressions and the resulting crowns means a far better fitting restoration. The need for remakes and readjustments are cut down considerably. With the analysis starting with a precision 3D digital impression of the patient’s mouth, any measurements or calculations are spot-on, because they are digital. Simply put, digital technology is revolutionising dentistry – making a visit to Duxton Dental a more efficient, less stressful and life-changing experience. For more information or to make an appointment for a free Invisalign consultation call Duxton Dental on 348 5488, email info@duxtondental.co.nz or visit www.duxtondental.co.nz.

Lovely Matisse outfits are ever-popular as are Anne Mardell dresses. And from the Netherlands hails Sandwich coordinating pants and tops, and vibrant handmade Zsiska designer jewellery. “Nothing is set in concrete fashion

Ali and Sharon’s honest advice is loved by their loyal customers – from ages 19 to 90. “There’s something for everyone.” The natural-linen dresses, for example, come in demure linen and lace or edgy designs. Alison says confidently about everything here: “There’s no ironing needed!” “Our silks, cottons and linen pieces have a naturally creasing texture. A convenient way to

LOOK YOUR BEST Do you want a beautiful smile and glowing skin? A new machine that simultaneously whitens teeth and treats skin offers a convenient way to look your best.

F

itting beauty treatments into our busy lives can be tricky, so combining the two saves time and makes sense, Sparklewhite Teeth Director Charmaine McFarlane says. “With Cup Day and the festive season coming up, now is a good time to book in for a session.” Recently launched at the Women’s Expo in Christchurch, the Aduro Professional 7+1 LED light therapy mask provides seven settings of light therapy to treat all skin conditions, plus teeth whitening. Combined with Infra-Red Skin Boosting technology, the treatment offers a painfree, non-invasive way to clear up acne, reduce wrinkles, even skin tones, reduce redness, revitalise, soothe, and promote cell rejuvenation. The light does not emit any harmful rays and is not a laser, which means zero down time or recovery time. The mask is a completely safe, effective and diverse solution for skin imperfections, says Charmaine, who is also an official distributor of the product. “I’ve seen the results this mask can provide. It’s amazing and also helps infuse skin care products deeper into the dermal layer of the skin.” As the facial treatments take just 20 minutes per session, a double-action teeth whitening gel has also been introduced. “We needed something that acted faster, without going over the 12 per cent hydrogen peroxide level.” Phone 03-339 7374 to book in now and receive special new-launch rates, or if you are a business owner interested in purchasing a machine.

imagination instigators By Melinda Collins

For the kids of the 80s it was the Spirograph and Cabbage Patch dolls; for the kids of the 90s it was koosh balls and chatter rings; and in the noughties, it was scooters and Tamagotchis. It won’t be long before Christmas shopping is in full flow, with savvy selections of this season’s must-haves.

I

n the world of child development, you may hear phrases like ‘critical thinking skills’ and ‘creative problem-solving capabilities’ with relation to children’s cognitive development goals. All these fancy phrases can be lumped together under one term – imagination. The way to create small humans with imagination is to provide them with opportunities to develop it for themselves when they are very young. These opportunities are found in one place and one place only… play. Whether it’s playing with paints,

playing with play dough, with costumes, with glue and with crayons, making a mess, exploring the woods or splashing in a puddle. So, if the latest fidget spinner was on your shopping list this year, why not step out of the trend box and go for some dress ups. It doesn’t even have to be the latest Disney movie, it could be a box of colourful and eclectic creations from your local thrift store. But why not throw in a superwomen outfit while you’re at it, after all, if you can imagine it, you can be it.

women’s health Anxiety key to

Women are twice as likely as men to suffer from anxiety and it is affecting women’s health more severely than heart disease and kidney failure, new guidelines developed by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) reveal.

ne in five New Zealand adults suffer from an anxiety disorder in any given year, with international research showing it causes more days off work than diabetes, arthritis, cardiovascular, respiratory and substance disorders. “Most of us worry at times about things going wrong,” RANZCP President Dr Kym Jenkins says. “However, when anxiety interferes with sleep, relationships and work, it can greatly affect the quality of our lives.” Unlike the 2003 guidelines which advocated Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and antidepressant medication as the first line of treatment, the new guidelines promote a stepped care approach that begins with the least intrusive treatment, such as internetguided CBT. If symptoms do not respond, the second line of treatment is face-to face CBT with a clinician and, if after six weeks there is no progress, antidepressant medication is considered. “Anxiety can be treated but it does take time,” Dr Jenkins says. “In high arousal situations, anxiety will make you focus on the threat and act quickly to escape or ward off danger, but the problem with persistent high anxiety is it can reduce a person’s ability to think, plan and do complex tasks. These prolonged states of anxiety can be very disabling.”

We need to get serious about the critical role nutrition plays in mental health.”

niversity of Canterbury Professor of Clinical Psychology Julia Rucklidge, who presented at the New Zealand Conference of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists in Tauranga last month, says a substantial body of research links poor nutrition to the mental illness epidemic in western societies. “The western diet is associated with poor mental health and eating a diet more akin to the Mediterranean diet improves mental health,” Professor Rucklidge says. “Not a single study has shown that a western diet that is heavily processed, high in refined grains, sugary drinks and takeaways and low in in fresh produce is good for us. “A good diet is one your grandmother would recognise – high in fruit and vegetables, fish and healthy fats and low in processed foods and we know that a well-nourished body and brain is better able to withstand ongoing stress and recover from illness.” Professor Rucklidge’s research also found that taking micronutrients can have a positive effect on the symptoms of ADHD, stress, anxiety and mood disorders. She says she would like to see a paradigm change whereby medication is not necessarily the first option for treatment, with lifestyle factors being addressed either first or in association with medication depending on the condition. “Nutrition really matters and we need to get serious about the critical role nutrition plays in mental health,” she says. “We are what we eat – how could it be any other way? Every time we put something in our mouths we can choose to offer ourselves something nutritionally deprived or something nourishing.” Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) President Dr Kym Jenkins says it’s important we recognise the role of nutrition on overall health. “The fact that New Zealanders with severe mental illness are dying 10 to 20 years earlier than other New Zealanders is due to a large degree on preventable physical illness such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and cancer,” Dr Jenkins says. “Psychiatrists have a key role to play in ensuring that people with mental illness are not further burdened by avoidable chronic physical health conditions – we need to think about the whole person and the relationship between body and mind.” Metropol October 26, 2017 41

good weekend A blooming

Christchurch’s love of green spaces has long been recognised under the Garden City banner; a label which became internationally recognised in 1997 when we won the inaugural Nations in Bloom contest and earned the title of the Garden City of the World.

A

lthough it was undoubtedly the roses, hydrangeas, oaks and willows that beautify our city streets which earned us this title, it is one the gifted greenfingers amongst us continue to foster with exceptional urban spaces we can’t help but admire. In recognition and full appreciation of this fact, the Wigram Lions are hosting their second annual Charity Garden Tour of 2017 across the weekend of November 2526, from 10am until 4pm.

The gifted greenies amongst us carry out some pretty exceptional work. Proudly supporting the Child Cancer Foundation and Westpac Rescue Helicopter, tickets cost $35 for the weekend ($37 if purchased online) and can be purchased from Oderings, Terra Viva, Portstone Garden Centre, online from www.charitygardentour.co.nz, or at any trail garden on the day, unless sold out prior. A discount will be available for group bookings of ten or more. Tickets enable you to visit eleven gardens in a wide range of themes and sizes, throughout the city. Although it’s difficult to quantify the beauty of our natural environment, it is fair to surmise that the gifted greenies amongst us can be credited with carrying out some pretty exceptional work – now it’s time to admire it, all for a good cause.

BIG ON BROADWAY Not many get the opportunity to celebrate their 80th anniversaries in such style, but Showbiz Christchurch is doing just that with one of the most popular line-ups of major musical entertainment it has ever staged.

T

he Saunders & Co 2018 season commences at the Isaac Theatre Royal with Wicked on April 6, followed by Broadway Hitmen – a concert of Cole Porter and Andrew Lloyd Webber hits from July 13-15, and is completed by Les Misérables opening on September 14. The Showbiz Christchurch season of Wicked is the New Zealand theatre company premiere of one of the most successful Broadway shows of all time; the story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two sorcery students at Shiz University: the blonde and very popular Glinda and a misunderstood green girl named Elphaba. A full show orchestra, soloists and a large chorus will fill the Isaac Theatre Royal stage midyear to present Broadway Hitmen, a concert of back-to-back hits from two of the biggest names in musical theatre, Cole Porter and Andrew Lloyd Webber. The season will be brought to an epic conclusion in September with Les Misérables, a grand and moving story about the survival of the human spirit which has won over 100 international awards and been seen by over 65 million people worldwide. This true modern classic is based on Victor Hugo’s novel and features one of the most memorable scores of all time, proving that great drama never gets old! Showbiz.org.nz

It is common knowledge that yoga and pilates are great for you, but there is a misconception that it is for the slim and lithe, the fit and fabulous. The truth is, you do not need to be flexible, strong or even able to get down to the floor when you start.

W

hat you do need, is a commitment to your health and wellbeing and a fun attitude (prepare yourself to meet friendly, fun people – teachers included!), because if you can breathe, you can do yoga and pilates. The beauty of the small class sizes at Adapted Yoga and Pilates means they can adjust them to everybody no matter the age, fitness level, size or injury/health status. “We know that it can be a bit scary going to your first class – which is why we send directions and some helpful tips (including where to park!) before class. Everything you need, including mats, is provided and you definitely do not need a fancy outfit. “We meet you one on one beforehand to find out all about you and to make a plan which will give you the health and wellbeing that

you want,” Adapted Yoga and Pilates, Director Rebecca Harford says. Penny started at Adapted to find her strength, both physically and mentally. She is now stronger, has found her balance and made lots of new friends. Don came along to support his partner and is now stronger than ever, getting very flexible and enjoying the classes. Charmaine started years ago after a car accident, has now completed her teacher training and is teaching more than 20 hours a week. To become another of Adapted’s success stories, mention this article and start with a month of unlimited classes for just $99 and your first Wellbeing Check will be completely free of charge – until the end of November. cuisine PURPLE’S POPULARITY By Melinda Collins

Berries are the sweet little superfood on everyone’s lips as we move into the warmer months. Blackberries, blueberries and passionfruit pack a powerful antioxidant punch in baking, smoothies and as a colourful garnish on cereals and yoghurt.

T

here is good science behind eating a wide variety of different coloured fruits and vegetables – the different colours representing different antioxidants. For foodie adventurists, purple is the go-to culinary colour for 2017. According to the Whole Foods Market, which examined consumer behaviour globally across 465 stores, our plates are going to be particularly colourful this year, with purple foods dominating the gastronomic scene. The health food company

described the phenomenon as a “fast growing trend”. “Richly coloured purple foods are popping up everywhere: purple cauliflower, black rice, purple asparagus, elderberries, acai, purple sweet potatoes, purple corn and cereal. “The power of purple goes beyond the vibrant colour and often indicates nutrient density and antioxidants.” So, if you’ve never tried an acai bowl, or tucked into a black rice risotto, then 2017 could be a year of new experiences.

PLACE TO BE T

hree of Canterbury’s biggest parties are happening soon. Louis is prepared with sixteen premium champagnes, oysters like you wouldn’t believe, and a menu specially prepared to keep the party atmosphere going. The Melbourne Cup is known in Australia as ‘the race that stops a nation,’ but it stops two nations. At 5pm, Tuesday November 7, the 2017 Melbourne Cup will be run. Starting at 1pm, Louis will serve a five-course lunch. Amuse bouche – a “mouth teaser” – will tantalise guests and prepare them for what is to come; beetroot and gin cured salmon, West Coast whitebait, beef fillet and gingerbread crème brulee, accompanied by glasses of Mumm champagne. G.H. Mumm once again brings its 190-year history to the Melbourne Cup as the official champagne. It is just one of the champagnes available at Louis and features in the Melbourne Cup long lunch. There will be giveaways, sweepstakes, and the race will be screened live at 5pm. At $120 per person, bookings are essential for this amazing party. Two more Canterbury parties are Addington (November 14) and Riccarton (November 18) Cup Days. For $49pp, Louis offers a Mumm champagne breakfast from 9am, transport to the races and back again for an afterparty. Bookings for each of these are also essential. Louis, part of Christchurch’s newest hospitality precinct at 123 Victoria Street, is ready to party at the races. NEW LAIR FOR

EVIL GENIUSES

It’s the only one of its kind in Christchurch – a shared working space with a bar right next door through the polished plywood wall. The clue to this concept is in the name – the ‘bar’ and the ‘lair’ are equal aspects of this enterprise.

“W

e wanted to have some fun and develop something that is just that little bit different,” according to co-owners Gerry and Clint. “People who have been working from home since the earthquakes may now be looking for a communal and convivial working space. So, if you see yourself as an ‘evil genius’, why not bring that genius here where you can operate in a totally professional way, but still have a laugh as well.”

The view from the workspace across the estuary is quite stunning. And come lunch time or the end of the day, what better place to relax than in the dramatic black bar with its Asian-inspired tapas menu, tap beer, bottled craft beer and extensive wine list? Chef Steve Tiwa of Indo Chine fame, has full rein in the kitchen to create delicious and adventurous dishes for sharing – from agedashi tofu (deep fried tofu served with miso dip), to bulgogi bao (sticky

beef glazed with soy in a steamed bun) and kraken minions (squid and octopus sautéed in sesame butter). There are many more delights besides, often with cheeky names that reflect the tone of this eclectic and innovative eatery. Our Precious Leader, Banana Boat Republicans and The DMZ will give you something of the flavour. You will find Evil Genius Bar & Lair at 1091 Ferry Road, Ferrymead, right by the estuary. Open seven days from 7am – late.

Interactive

PARTY MUST-HAVES Photo booths have become a fun interactive ‘must have’ at all kinds of events these days. Now there is a completely unique option called ‘Magic Mirror’ – the first of its kind in Christchurch.

nstead of being in a booth, you stand in front of the magic mirror, which is voice activated and has a touch screen. The mirror has incredible capabilities such as video recordings, games, personalised photo strips and kid’s animations. The mirror’s interactive touch screen has onscreen prompts that guide you through the process and allows you to add signature features to personalise your shots. The photos print instantly and are also available digitally. Ashleigh Johnson and her partner James Hinton started the business with a desire to take events to the next level. “We feel it’s a great way to capture an event in a way a photographer cannot. With less formality, guests and clients can let their hair down and capture moments in a fun and memorable way using the latest technology,” Ashleigh says. There are a variety of packages available when hiring the Magic Mirror, depending on party duration and your requirements. A uniformed attendant is there to assist where required and there are 200+ animations on the screen to theme your photos, as well as props. “We have special children’s props available, as well as the traditional ones for adults,” James explains. The deluxe package for events goes as far as to include a red carpet complete with stanchions, a choice of backdrops and a free photo album for the memories to be kept forever. Magic Mirror can travel South Island wide and specialises in weddings, private parties (for kids and adults), school balls, engagement parties and corporate functions. Visit www.magicmirror.co.nz.

THE MENU THAT GIVES

Next time you’re at your desk, in dire need of a stomach-filling, nutritious, yummy lunch, think about next week. You could order yourself gourmet lunch deliveries for next week. What’s more, each single relatively small lunch outlay automatically pays for two children’s lunches to be dropped off to low-decile schools.

T

his is a wonderfully inventive, generous initiative taken since February 2015 by Ben Atkinson, formerly the Head Chef of Joe’s Garage, Sumner. The menus are enough to induce drooling, which is kind of incredible from a not-for-profit undertaking. Currently about 600 children’s lunches are delivered every week, paid for by just 200 ordered commercial lunches. As in any restaurant, culinary offerings are constantly being changed up. Which means that all eaters – the order-gourmands and the school children – never get bored. There are no jam sandwich

Cafe Restaurant Bar

options here. You’re more likely to be ordering ‘pesto chicken activated coconut charcoal buns’ with ‘fresh salad greens and turmeric aioli’. Plus a Greek pasta salad. And a sweet treat to finish. It sounds all right. Ben’s sole aim is to increase happiness at school and eradicate the hunger endured by Christchurch school children who don’t bring lunches from home. He’s helping to level the playing field of learning in poorer parts of our city. Lunches are delivered daily to anywhere in Christchurch from Ferrymead, to Hornby, to New Brighton. COFFEE COLLECTIVE

Espressonists, look up from the demi-tasse now: Chris Meyer, aka Coffee Monster, is about to propel Christchurch from a coffee lover’s pleasure garden, to actual coffee paradise on earth. Within five months and inside the four avenues, you will never be more than a kilometre from a Black and White Coffee Company experience.

T

he spirit of Black and White Coffee is embodied in two forms: the Cartel – full onsite roastery and brewing, and the House – a more intimate space for brewing coffee fresh from the roastery. A sister Cartel and House is about to be added to the existing stable of two (Victoria Street – the Cartel original and The Crossing – the first House). Chris is the owner and operator of the two additions. When it comes to coffee in all its forms, enthusiastic just doesn’t cover it. “I live, breathe and bleed coffee, and that’s a fact.” Chris realised some time ago that he needed to “get out of bed to do something I love and this is it”. He will be head roaster, working behind the espresso machine, and “probably washing dishes as well”. Opening in early December, the new Black and White Coffee House will be at 177 High Street backing onto Little High. Its location in the Billens building is the site of pre-shaken-Christchurch giant, the Globe Café. Keen to celebrate the memories and 54 October 26, 2017 Metropol

pay homage to that much-missed slice of B.E. Christchurch lore, Black and White Coffee House will have a large globe hung from the ceiling. The coffee ninjas will be running (driving?) the rare Faema E61 coffee machine. Chris says it’s an investment he just had to make. “Coffee machines have personalities.”

The walls will be hung with black framed copies of rare sepia photographs of historical events (think the iceberg that sank the Titanic) and famous people (the only photograph of Abraham Lincoln) often as children or teens. Chris says the photos will get patrons thinking hard about identities. Number 150 Lichfield Street will be a Black and White Coffee Cartel, and the largest Black and White Coffee venue to date. It will house a two-kilo coffee roaster, and roast for Lichfield and High Streets. Lichfield’s décor will be based around the second and third of Chris’ passions: vintage motorbikes and WWII aeroplanes. Micro roasting – that is roasting in small batches in smaller spaces with an intimate feel between coffee, customer, and venue – is known as the ‘third wave of coffee’, and Chris is excited about being part of the movement bringing it to Christchurch. He says NZ is still a forerunner in coffee quality and innovation, but the rest of the coffee world are hot on our heels. “Coffee in New Zealand is exciting and fastmoving. You have to adapt; there is always a better way.” He is inspired by creating something new about what coffee is, challenging old views. For all his passion, knowledge, and innovation though, Chris is no scary, snooty, exclusive purist. He says at Black and White Coffee you’ll always get the coffee you are passionate about, and that means trim milk, soy and almond milk, single and triple shots are all literally on the table. “I have always believed that my establishment should be your third comfort zone, right after your home and work.”

ark McGuiness, owner of Torenhof, says that with spring in full flush, they are redesigning the salad and entrée selections to reflect the taste for lighter and seasonal ingredients. You can rest assured however, that the signature dishes of the house: steak frites, and the mussel aficionado’s choices, aren’t going anywhere. The menu is extensive and presided over by the chef that has been with Torenhof since B.E. Christchurch, when the café nestled in the historic Provincial Chambers. Mark says there are also delicious options suited to pre and post-theatre dining, if a trip to the Academy Cinema is part of the plan. Access is easy with 250 carparks and there is a variety of places to sit from the character interior, to the easterlyevading conservatory and the outdoor terrace which both catch the sunset. There are a few bookings left for Christmas functions – for dining there are six options captured in three menus, plus cocktail party selections too. Matching beer with food is a speciality and staff can advise on choices. With 32 beers available, there is something, or several somethings, for every taste and tasting trays are popular. Mark says people often start with Stella, then their taste buds grow into bigger bolder flavours, then the sour beers or the fruit beers, and then they settle on a favourite, which keeps them coming back. Find them at 20 Durham Street, Christchurch

ARTISTIC ALTERNATIVE By Melinda Collins

From furniture to ceramics, small-scale businesses are satisfying consumer demand for ethical, handmade goods and our homes have never looked better than with this artistic alternative.

G

Small-scale businesses are satisfying demand for ethical, handmade goods.

one are the days where homewares are spat off a production belt. Today bespoke furnishings are lining both the shelves and the halls of our homes as small-run items increase in popularity. The return to making and working with our hands may be, at least in part, a reaction to an increasingly virtual world, but also an increased awareness of provenance, as we become more aware of the ethics of where things come from and how they are produced. Knitting and crocheting, embroidery, furnituremaking, dressmaking, glass-blowing, ceramics and screenprinting are all enjoying their moment in the crafty spotlight, following quickly on from the global trend for artisan, hand-crafted food and craft beers which are quickly overtaking their commercial contemporaries. But the homemade movement is far removed from fêtes, church halls and car boot sales, with today’s wares offering a high-end alternative. So if you’re furnishing, have a thought for homemade homewares and your home won’t just be a pretty face.

A UNIQUE NEIGHBOURHOOD Cymon Allfrey

home

CENTRAL CHRISTCHURCH: About to embark on a new blog series providing a snapshot into various inner city living projects, the team at Cymon Allfrey Architects is attempting to dispel the negative myths associated with living in central Christchurch.

T

here is a perceived notion that once you cross over one of the four avenues and enter the parameters of the central city that something shifts – that the opportunity, manner and comfort of living is somehow different. What we know in terms of population growth and social success for Christchurch is that we need more people living in our central neighbourhood, which is where we, the design community, come in. Through discussions with homebuilders and peers, and the crafting of designs, we are able to apply our expertise in living beyond the suburban home. Which for the last few years, is exactly what we have been doing. Working across a variety of inner city projects, we have been engaged to provide solutions to living within the four

avenues by a diverse range of clients. From a single-storey home in walking distance from New Regent Street; to a higher density living environment looking to replace the character and scale of the traditional colonial workers’ cottages; to the repurposing of a commercial building requiring residential and commercial activity to sit side-by-side in harmonious occupancy; to high-density terrace homes and multiunit apartments requiring a balance between occupier and investor needs. A variety of projects which illustrate the vast opportunities that exist within the city and highlight that central city living is not just about apartment buildings, it can be anything you need it to be. Prior to 2010 and the Canterbury earthquakes, we had seen peripheral

home development of central city living. Pockets of the city had been urbanised, but it was missing key ingredients. As the city is regenerated and we see the likes of the recent opening of a supermarket on Lichfield Street – the heart of the city – the central zone has begun to be activated for urban living. What is important to note in the central city, is that like designing and building in a ‘traditional’ suburb, context varies. Certain buildings like to exist in different areas of the city, which means the level of amenity and needs for each, will vary from one to another. Yet, unlike suburban living, there is a greater level of amenity from which we can borrow. When you compare the amenity

Yet it is often this offering, which is a direct result of commercial activity, that is the primary negative; igniting thoughts that central city occupancy will be nosier, busier, dirtier. Yet this is not the case.

It is our hope that we can dispel these underlying perceptions and show homebuilders, and buyers, that good architecture transcends this. As experts in living it is our duty to apply our skills across every project, ensuring no matter where it is located, that there is an ease to living. After all, the central city is just another suburb: a unique neighbourhood of our beautiful sprawling city. Visit, www.caarc.co.nz.

A spacious

FOODIE HAVEN

On Moorhouse Ave lies a spacious foodie haven where finding the perfect gift amongst the endless selection of ideas is easy. The only problem may be deciding which one of the many great options to choose – which is where the expert staff come in.

T

he Total Food Equipment team enjoy sharing their kitchenware knowledge with customers and are consistently up-to-date with the latest products and developments in the industry, says owner Sandra McLay. “We all use the products here ourselves and I personally test out all the bakeware and cookware. We unwrap things so people can take a good look and feel before they buy, and I also offer instore demonstrations so they can see exactly how it operates.” Catering to both amateur and professional chefs, the expansive city store offers a comprehensive range of top quality kitchen tools and accessories, including dinnerware, glassware, serve ware, bakeware and cookware. Along with the extensive selection and excellent customer service, the addition of gift

wrapping and plentiful off-street parking make it a stress-free and enjoyable experience. Christmas is only two months away – so as the weather warms up and we look forward to summer and alfresco dining, the amazing Grand Kamado barbecue/pizza oven is an ideal gift for the foodie in your life. “We also have a collection of beautiful crockery from Portugal, which is very popular, and for dining outdoors we have a stylish range of melamine crockery that doesn’t look like melamine.” The delicious locally made Sally’s range of sauces, chutneys, pastes and jams also make great presents, and the Sally’s wooden cakebox is a unique way to gift Christmas baking. And the beautiful and practical La Chamba cookware – a unique, organic array of cookware and tableware, handcrafted from South American clay – is a hit with both home and professional cooks. “It’s so versatile and is safe to use under the grill, on the stovetop, in the oven or microwave – many restaurants use it,” says Sandra, who has a focus on supporting local suppliers and also imports top international brands. Continuing the organic theme, Total Food Equipment has it all – from eco-friendly paper sandwich bags and beeswax infused wrap, to non-plastic reusable straws and silicone lids to replace clingwrap. An increasing amount of detail is going into the design and construction of these spaces, often including roofing, specialist lighting, heating, and numerous food preparation surfaces and cooking options, to name a few. structure and life to any area. These spaces need to be intimate and have an atmosphere of their own and, while separate from the greater garden, all of the areas should work well together in overall design. Whether it’s creating a welcoming entrance and street appeal, simple renovations to paths and terraces, planting ideas or a full design of your property, Artworks Landscape has a real passion for the industry and love to help clients bring their homes and gardens to life. T

he great news is that it’s become increasingly affordable to furnish in the style you choose; highlow house-dressing is a great way to go. Basically, that’s filling your spaces with a balance of designer/ luxe furnishings, mixed with the cheap and cheerful. To some, comfort means cossetting yourself by filling rooms with many loved or themed possessions. To others, comfort might mean the serenity that comes from sparse but intensely luxurious and tactile pieces. The perfect bedroom might boast nothing more than an antique bed with the highest quality sheets, white duvet and a possum-fur coverlet; one sink-into-me armchair, one set of drawers. To others, true comfort equals what others call clutter. If you’re the sort of decorator who loves collections, one idea to make the whole thing less chaotic is to group by type or colour. Walls painted in deep-hues could be the perfect backdrop. Or a neutral-only room filled with mirrors plus metallic or neutral-toned possessions looks both serene and spectacular. You make up the rules.

A softer selection has since emerged, as we lean towards the raw metal, which will gain a lovely patina and become more attractive over time. It’s not just bathrooms that brass is taking over, where it’s used on faucets, frames and fixtures. Brass is an increasingly popular furniture accent, as well being used in a wide range of ornaments and hardware for throughout the home. So be bold by going back to brass.

The

s the clean, minimalist trend continues to grow, so does the size of tiles, according to Owners Remi Golebiowski and Izabela Wojcik. “Tiles are getting bigger and bigger.” The concept of the large ‘Monolith’ slabs goes beyond the traditional thinking about design. At 2400mm by 1200mm, the big format stands not only for the aesthetic but also practical aspects. Creating a seamless look with no joins provides an appealing option for both residential and commercial projects. Another prominent trend is the textured, natural, rustic appearance. With the smaller tiles, there is growing demand for more intricate designs and patterns, such as mosaic, the ‘brick’ look and 3D shapes. “The two trends can go together,” Izabela says. “Such as a modern and seamless look, with a 3D feature wall. We are the only tile company in the country who provide 3D Glass Reinforced Concrete tiles. We also have natural timber flooring, which can also be used as a feature pattern.” The studio’s strong focus on ecology is a significant part of the business. To compensate nature for the valuable raw material used to manufacture its products, the Polish factories the company sources from embrace the ‘1 for 1 principle’ – for every box of timber, one tree is planted. It’s a scary thing, when everyone else is painting their rooms neutral, to go loud and bold. Maybe it’s not the colour. Or the wallpaper. It could be the eccentric piece of furniture you love, that other family members pronounce ‘unique’. It could be clapped-out-rustic, or unflinchingly ornate, and you adore that.

O

r you may be itching to transform your garden or courtyard in a way your friends might mock. So let them. It’s not mandatory to grow flowers if all you actually want in your sunny space is cherry tomatoes. Matters of taste should always remain matters of free will. They can truly be the difference between depression and contentment. Indulge yourself! If you have a vision of what you’d like, but need help to execute it, employing a landscaping or interior designer should fix that. Interior designer Karen from Furnishscene

says it’s common for people to have ideas of an aimed-for finished look, but not the requisite experience to put it together. That’s where the designer is invaluable. A great designer won’t ever stop you from including those bizarre barbed-looking lightfittings you love, or that shapely purple and orange velvet couch you can’t stop thinking about. They’ll help you to achieve a harmonious look based on your individual loves. Moral of the story? Never sit by and let your quirkiness be moderated. In the end they’ll all love you for it.

Honda is no exception and the brand’s new LAMS approved CMX 500 Rebel, priced at $10,990 plus ORCs, leads Honda’s charge into the fiercely competitive retro learner-approved market. At first glance, the Rebel ticks the box visually. It follows the text book bobber styling recipe to great effect. Devoid of any unnecessary add-ons, the simplistic but aggressive lines of the Rebel make for a real looker. The Rebel’s motor is a 475cc four-stroke parallel twin from the CBR500R, which has been re-tuned to produce 33 kW of power. A six-speed gearbox and ABS come as standard. low in the 690mm saddle with your arms outstretched towards the wide bars, it is surprisingly comfortable. In front of you, the tear drop style tank holds 11.2 litres of go juice. You can monitor your consumption from the digital HUD, which also contains the speedometer, neutral light, trip meter and clock, all which are easy to read. All switches and materials used are of high quality and the whole bike feels very well put together, this is Honda after all. Turn the key and the twin burbles into life. Rev it out and the burble becomes a beautiful baritone bark. However, those who crave the lazy thump of an old school V-TWIN bobber may find it underwhelming. On the move around town, the Rebel comes into its own. Fat tyres front and rear and a kerb weight of 190 kg give the Rebel a degree of chuck-ability mostly seen on naked sports bikes. Rear vision through the mirrors is clear and concise and 136mm of ground clearance means your feet are firmly on the ground when waiting for the green. Out in the open, the Rebel is more than willing to play. The slick six-speed box is a joy to use and sharp throttle response with low down torque helps when blasting out of bends. A low centre of gravity means the Rebel feels planted, and a comfortable ride means even some of Christchurch’s earthquake ravaged roads are rarely an issue. What Honda has done with the CMX 500 Rebel, is give us an efficient, well made, and seriously fun motorcycle. Though this bike is not for everyone, if you “dig” the bobber style and want something a bit different, then this Rebel with a cause is definitely worth a look.

“It’s the ultimate association and we make each other stronger. We both have the same vision of looking after the clients who look after us. It’s mutual respect.” Chris first harnessed this primal urge in 1987, when he began selling made-tomeasure shirts door-to-door, initially just to fill the time between the end of his business degree and the beginning of his career. It didn’t take him long to realise you didn’t need a career when you could have a business. motoring ‘Bring me my bow of burning gold. Bring me my arrows of desire. Bring me my spear o’ clouds unfold. Bring me my chariot of fire.’ Those immortal words from the hymn ‘Jerusalem’ resonate aplenty when at the wheel of a car such as this 1953 Bentley R Type; a car so intrinsically British.

80 October 26, 2017 Metropol

A STAR-STUDDED CLASSIC T

he R Type was the second series of post-war Bentleys, replacing the MK IV. At the time, Bentley was owned by Rolls Royce, so its sister car, the Rolls Royce Dawn, was almost identical, apart from carburetion and radiator grill, where the Rolls Flying Lady was replaced with Bentley’s winged B. The production date of this particular R Type gives a clue to its special significance. It was purchased new by film star Ronald Colman, specifically to attend the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The car even comes with a special emblem to signify its presence at the crowning of Her Majesty. Colman then kept the car at his home in Santa Barbara California, right up until his death in 1958. Getting up close to this star-studded

Bentley is an experience in itself. Glistening chrome, body work and white wall tyres show Colman as a man of taste. Once inside, you are greeted with the sort of wooden and leather clad surroundings you would expect from a Bentley of this age. On the passenger side pillar, you notice a thin glass vase. This was because Ronald Colman liked to wear carnation flowers in his jacket breast pocket. He had the vase installed to hold spares when out and about. A gargantuan 4.5 litre straight sixengine with twin SU carburettors is housed under the bonnet, mated to a four-speed H pattern manual gearbox. Turn the ignition key, press the start button and said engine purrs into life. You don’t really drive an R Type; you helm it. Your mitts clasp the large

steering wheel as turning from left to right becomes more like port to starboard. Firmly pressing down on the accelerator precedes a gradual surge as you ride a wave of torque from gear to gear. The long bonnet, seemingly stretching to the horizon, rises after each change. The four-speed H pattern box, found low next to the driver’s door of all places, is easy to get your head around, but the breaks require a firm foot in bringing this British leviathan to a stop. While capable of whooshing across highways and byways at a great rate, the Bentley, as you might imagine, is more at home wafting well within the local limit. Everywhere you go in the Bentley R Type, heads will turn and those with a penchant for proper luxury and timeless design will be smitten.

hat I liked was the ‘Peugeot cockpit’. I actually called it that before I found out that was its formal name! That’s because you feel like you’re in an advance plane of some form and the chrome highlights on the interior dash add to that feeling. Connectivity to the system is USB or Bluetooth with a 12.3-inch screen, LED lighting options for headlights and there are LOTS of lighting features. Naught-100 in 9.9 second, but it did seem faster than that. I decided to really blast this one out with a drive to Ashburton and back. It handled well but its fuel efficiency was the thing that grabbed me. I had that ‘is the fuel gauge broken’ feeling when halfway there it didn’t seem to have moved at all. It is digital so how could it be broken? DOH! At 120 Kw, it’s got all the power you might want and plenty of room in the back. It’s important to point out that these days you can choose a base model and keep adding to it with variations that are just about endless. You can get the options of leather seating, an electronic handsfree tailgate and a sunroof. I had to use the breaks in a ‘must stop now’ situation and, looking through the specifications, it’s good to know that you and your family have a high level of safety features on board. All in all, a great SUV. The team at Armstrong Prestige is great, book your test drive this weekend.

Everywhere I was looking I was seeing the New Peugeot 3008, European Car of the year. Armstrong Prestige got me into the Allure, the up-spec version with a price point at around $42,000.

Annie Mellor I am delighted to be cruising again in the gorgeous Mediterranean in 2018 and can’t wait to show you my insiders guide to the places we visit. This wonderful cruise/land tour combines my first- hand knowledge with the luxury of cruising on MSC Poesia and MSC Divina to the highlights of the East and West Mediterranean. We begin with two fabulous days in Venice experiencing the life of this beautiful city. We sail away to explore the shops and my favourite hang outs and historic sites in Athens and Rome, discover the tapas in Palma de Mallorca and the sights and food of ancient Sicily. I love to stroll the streets and enjoy the beaches of Mykonos and to capture the charm of Puglia, Italy. You can relax in your spacious cabin or enjoy the ambience on board as you get to know fellow travellers in the range of bars and restaurants, by the pool, at the show or on deck. The ship offers all this and more as we cruise to a new destination each day. We have an exciting new addition to our tour with two relaxing days in Dubai as a stopover on our way from Christchurch to Venice including a dinner and sightseeing. I hope you can join me for our latest Mediterranean Discovery.
