racing the grand building’s walls from 13 May is Your Hotel Brain. A metaphor for postmodernism in the 1990s and the increasing dilution of context in the digital era, the major exhibition brings together a collection representing New Zealand artists whose names reached the national, and in some cases international masses, in the 1990s. The exhibition title pays homage to Don DeLillo’s epic 1990s novel Underworld and plays on the fluidity of information as it floats in and out of our mind, spontaneously grabbing our attention. Next month, from 10 June, Kushana Bush’s The Burning Hours will also

capture the imagination of gallerygoers. This intricately detailed work is stroke after stroke (literally) of visual irony. Religious themes blend with secular narratives, culminating in ritualistic violence. A harrowing, yet beautiful depiction thanks to the stunning use of gouache and gold. A new body of work (2014-2016), The Burning Hours references illuminated manuscripts, Persian miniatures, European art history and modern life. While disparate themes at face value, they bind Bush’s work to past and present, historical and contemporary. Experience both exhibitions for yourself. ALL SOULS’ RISES By Céline Gibson

When the sod was turned at the soon to be built All Souls’ Anglican Parish of Merivale St Albans church and hall on 9 April, those gathered there possibly recalled another ceremony, two years previous, in which cremation ashes and urns from former parishes of St Mary’s and St Matthew’s were interred at All Souls’.

as a church.” Reverend Megan speaks of the patience and fortitude of the parishioners of St Mary’s and St Matthew’s, people who were literally shaken by the events that saw their churches devastated in the 2010/2011 quakes. “We have waited a long time for this – after years of operating in the wilderness, we’re finally coming home.” The new church is a Warren and Mahoney design which includes a specially commissioned circular chapel that, unlike the site’s former gothic building, will flood All Souls’ with natural light. Included in the plan is a memorial window from St Matthew’s Church, and stain glass windows that were salvaged from St Mary’s. “When thinking about our new church, our vision was to create something that as if all around one table, humankind stood. All Souls’ will be a unique place of worship.” Reverend Megan smiles, “You know, we all need ‘feel good’ stories - we need resurrection stories! This is ours.”

A MASTERPIECE IN MOTION When Mark Prosser decided to build two homes to showcase his company, he did not want to build typical “show homes”. These bespoke Fendalton homes will be his show pieces; Mark’s magnum opus – or, in other words, his masterpiece.

he Mark Prosser Builders masterpiece experience in either of the homes will have a sense of theatre. You won’t just walk through - you will be taken on a journey. A story will unfold from room to room. Mark’s business partner and wife, Melissa Prosser says, “It will be an exclusive experience. Individuals, couples or small, personalised groups. You will have the place to yourself, as you should, to truly feel what a home is like. You’ll eat canapés prepared in the home’s kitchen. You’ll sample a little bubbly from the fridge. Most importantly, you will be amongst a very small collection of people who will get to see inside one of these homes.” Viewings will be by appointment only. In the weeks leading up to the release, a limited number of people will be invited to book their time slot. The viewing season will be strictly limited. Currently the property is wrapped in total secrecy. As the builds progress, images will be revealed via the Masterpiece mailing list. Anyone wanting to get a first look should sign up at www.markprosserbuilders.co.nz/masterpiece as they will be releasing more details very soon.

ETHICAL ELEGANCE Metropol talks to the incredible Kowtow Art Director & Founder, Gosia Piatek, about her extraordinary successes, all of which have been governed by an unwavering dedication to genuine environmental and social responsibility.

How did the brand materialise? Was it always your ambition to pursue a career in fashion? I started Kowtow because I wanted to do something that was meaningful and felt that fashion was a good outlet. I wanted to make sure that everyone in the production chain was being rewarded fairly for what they do, without being exploited. I applied for and received a work start grant and created the first range. What inspired the name Kowtow? Kowtow is a Chinese word that represents a sign of deep respect shown by kneeling and bowing so low that your forehead touches the ground. I thought it tied in nicely with the brand.

W

hile it would be soothing to our conscience to say we live in a time where ethics and fashion are inextricable, we are instead faced with the reality that the two remain mutually exclusive when it comes to many brands on the sartorial scene. Not Kowtow though. This luxe fashion identity has the heart of a lion when it comes to pioneering and advocating for true ethicality in the industry. No compromises or cutting corners.

What are the core pillars of the brand? Design, ethics and sustainability. We only use fair trade organic cotton; we source sustainably with recognised accredited suppliers; all of our dyes are Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) approved; we only work with SA8000 accredited factories. Our environmental and social responsibility is supported with certifications from the Fairtrade Labeling Organisation (FLO), Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Global Recycle Standard (GRS) and Social Accountability Accreditation Services (SAAS).

A new beginning is in sight.

SINCE 1997

It was recently Fashion Revolution Week, what does this mean to you? I think Fashion Revolution Week is great in raising awareness with consumers about the global fashion industry, the workers involved, and the conditions they work in. Hopefully this knowledge will encourage them to ask more questions and in turn promote brands to look deeper into their supply chains.

Tell us about the ‘A’ grade in the Ethical Fashion Report you recently achieved? This annual industry report aims to track the efforts of fashion companies to ensure the transparency of their supply chain and rights of workers: safe work place, no child labour, living wages and freedom from slavery. The questions were very stringent and a lot of supporting evidence had to be submitted. To be given the highest grade of all New Zealand fashion businesses shows that we really are who we say we are.

What have been some of the most significant milestones for the brand? Kowtow is now in its 10th year of business and has grown to stock over 200 retailers worldwide alongside running our own successful online store. We have agents representing us in New York, Copenhagen, Venice and Tokyo as well as our own Kowtow showrooms in Melbourne and Wellington. What advice would you give to aspiring creatives? You learn as you go: don’t get too caught up in all the ifs and buts. Give it a try and see where it takes you.

SHARING THEIR STORIES By Céline Gibson

IF WE CAN HELP OTHER COMMUNITIES FACING A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE, OR PREPARING AND PLANNING FOR ONE, THE SITE WILL HAVE DONE ITS JOB.”

They say life is for learning, and here in Ōtautahi, Christchurch, we have certainly learnt a few lessons these past years living with the aftermath of quakes.

ne organisation that came to be a constant presence during those testing times was the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCIRT). We came to learn that SCIRT people equalled things getting done; we came to appreciate those reassuring leaflets in our mailboxes, giving us a “heads up” as to work about to be carried out in our streets. Now SCIRT is nearing the completion of their six year, $2.2 billion repair programme, funded by the Government and Christchurch City Council, but they leave us with an invaluable gift – the SCIRT Learning Legacy. Developed by SCIRT in conjunction with the University of Canterbury Quake Centre, UC CEISMIC and Resilient

Organisations, the website publicly shares information, concepts, plans, policies and lessons learnt. “If we can help other communities facing a similar experience, or preparing and planning for one, the site will have done its job,” said SCIRT Executive General Manager Ian Campbell. Mayor Lianne Dalziel has said the website is a great source of information for international organisations, but also for local people to understand a crucial part of the city’s recovery from the earthquakes. The site features about 70 stories with more to follow. One treasured find on the website is the Memento Book, a most worthy photographic tribute to the tireless efforts of SCIRT folk on our behalf. AT THE FOREFRONT OF

CONTEMPORARY TRENDS Thirty-three years ago, Geoff Ball founded Hagley Windows and Doors and eight years later, he also founded Thermaseal Double Glazing.

T

ogether the companies have steadily grown. Hagley Windows and Doors has become the largest manufacturer of residential aluminium joinery in the South Island. The expansion, however, has not diluted the company’s commitment to delivering the highest quality, Vantage brand of windows and doors, and other specialised glass products for the residential and commercial market. Customer service remains a priority and is part of the culture. Choosing the right windows and doors for your home or commercial business will affect how it looks, feels, and functions. Choosing the best company to provide them is vital. Customers, whether residential or commercial, “want to deal with reputable companies that can stand behind their ability and their warranties,” Geoff says. To that end, the Ball Hagley Group invested over twenty million dollars in a new 10,000 square metre state-of-the-art facility at Christchurch’s Waterloo Business Park which opened in April 2017. It brings Hagley and Thermaseal together on one site. “This is the first combined facility of its type in New Zealand. Having the two companies side by side in the factory offers significant customer service, efficiency and productivity benefits – the glass units arrive at the end of their production line and move around the corner in time to be glazed into the windows and doors.” Home designs are now incorporating more and larger windows and doors. Hagley Windows and Doors and Thermaseal are continually refining and improving their ranges, keeping ahead of contemporary trends. With a demand for better insulation, the team has been able to expand its capacity for production of high performance doubleglazing options. The new site and an increased number of skilled staff, means the production and delivery of the highest quality windows and doors is guaranteed.

A state-of-the-art hospital has opened at Elmswood Retirement Village, providing even more peace of mind for residents and their families. Delivering experienced clinical care in an intimate family setting, the newly built Elmswood Village Hospital features 25-bed hospital level care rooms.

he registered nurses and staff are highly qualified, with experience in a wide range of skills across aged care. Featuring the latest technology and equipment, the new facility means residents don’t have to leave the village to receive the full range of care, says Facility Manager Julia Mead. “It’s about providing that full continuum of care to our residents. And the fact that it’s delivered by the same staff they know and trust is even more reassuring for them.” The warm and spacious ground level rooms are private, and feature ensuites and ceiling hoists, as well as a view onto the beautiful village garden area. THE LITTLE THINGS

IN LIFE By Kate Pierson

With so much magnificent merchandise in our midst, it can be easy to overlook the little things in life.

W

hile small in size, it is impossible to overstate how good these pint-size accessories are at punching above their weight when it comes to adding oomph to an outfit that’s just begging for that finishing touch. As all fashionistas know, the devil is in the detail.

Here’s our top list of must haves: Ring bling: a little sparkle on the finger never hurts, and better yet when it’s a bold statement piece. We’re a big fan of overstated stones right now.

As all fashionistas know, the devil is in the detail.

THE GOODS Beanies & bags: beanies are a great way to introduce a bit of grunge to an outfit that’s otherwise fairly conservative. Coordinate the fabric and colour of your beanie with a purse to hold your essentials – what’s not to love?

STITCH & HIDE

24 May 11, 2017 Metropol

The key to your look: once upon a time keychains were probably viewed as functional rather than fashionable, but designers have worked their creative magic and transformed them into a statement piece in their own right. Polish your look right down to the finer details. We love the combination of a keyring and a purse.

The final touch: one can never overstate the value of finding your perfect fragrance match that becomes your signature style. Check out page 31 of today’s issue for how to pick your scent soulmate.

WHAT A

DOLL

2.

Get your glow on: some of us prefer fuller coverage while others like to just tackle the troublesome spots. Either way, a great foundation will always help you put your best face forward. The key is to always get the right colour for your complexion – Lauren & Louise is the perfect port of call for this!

One of the hallmarks of our youth is supple, smooth, luminescent skin – like a porcelain doll.

N

o matter the season, great skin is the ideal accessory to any outfit, particularly with a pop of colour on the cheeks and lips, with lashings of mascara for the final touch.

Blushing beauty: a delicate pink cheek is the distilled essence of health and vitality. A dusting of soft pink blush on the apples of your cheeks achieves a sweet yet sophisticated aesthetic.

3.

Thanks to the expertise and divine products of Lauren & Louise, we have the remedy for any impending winter blues, so you can put together an aesthetic that is fresh and feminine without being high-maintenance.

1.

It’s all about the base: every makeup maven knows that a polished look is all in the prep work. Primer is the perfect companion to foundation, hydrating and smoothing out your skin, the canvas, so that carefully applied details stay in beautiful condition all day long.

4.

Lip service: a red lip has always symbolised effortless femininity and class. With a beautiful base and a pop of pink on the cheeks, a ruby red lip offers a chic finishing touch.

5.

Eye candy: who doesn’t adore long lashes? Pretty up your peepers with great mascara that will go the distance for you.

THE

WISH LIST

1.

By Kate Pierson

Autumn and winter are dishing out all sorts of wonderful when it comes to the wardrobe, and we are the grateful beneficiaries of their sartorial generosity.

O

ur Wish List is made up of the fundamentals with a generous dose of fancy in the mix. A trusty trench for the cooler temperatures is an absolute must-have, as is a great pair of military style boots. A stylish but sturdy watch is always a great investment and we love the new Kate Spade Scallop Tracker, which offers way more than meets the eye. This ‘personal cheerleader’ automatically links to the Kate Spade New York connected app to provide bursts of motivation while tracking your steps, sleep and other habits. It’s the key to honouring your New Year’s resolutions all year round! Finally on our Wish List for the coming seasons is the special

little Pearlie Charm from Deadly Ponies. The tale and tradition of the Pearly King and Queens harks back to the 19th century. Henry Croft was once an orphan street sweeper but soon became a revered charity supporter. He collected the lost pearl buttons from costermonger’s attire, in order to fashion his now-celebrated Pearly suit. His giving nature and eccentric outfit quickly gathered a following, eventually giving rise to the Pearly Society. Deadly Ponies will be donating all the proceeds of the ‘Lucky Charm’ (from the Pearlies collection) to Lifewise, a local New Zealand social development agency working to house the homeless.

SAVING I FACE The Cosmetic Clinic in Westfield Mall has the power to change your life.

f something about your face or body is a source of annoyance, it can likely be overcome! Rosa Guthrie, The Cosmetic Clinic’s owner, is excited to offer medicalgrade cosmetic treatments at affordable prices and in a convenient location – down the Pak n Save end of the Mall, next to Divine Cakes. With over a decade’s experience in running clinics offering highly regulated and effective dermal treatments for laser hair removal, acne, pigmentation, scarring, and sun damage, Rosa and her business partner Selina Gilensan have majored in aesthetic and technical excellence with cosmetic injectables and advanced skin

treatments. Previously available for only the cash-and-time-wealthy, New Zealanders now need not suffer from embarrassing facial or body hair, thinning skin, wrinkling, scarring or pigmentation. The Cosmetic Clinic’s recent opening here represents a step forward for Christchurch, as while Kiwi owned and operated, TCC is part of a global network of over 50 clinics founded by a leading plastic surgeon in 1996. Hundreds of thousands of clients have been successfully treated within this network. The third clinic in the group opened its doors in Auckland last week. “Until recently, non-invasive beauty treatments such as we offer haven’t been affordable to the average New Zealander,” Rosa says. Now that they are, there’s absolutely no reason to need to regularly shave, wax, or suffer from any aesthetic skin concerns. Consultations with the Clinic’s Registered Nurse, Laser and Dermal Technicians are complimentary. Walk-ins are welcome. The Clinic is open for extended mall hours. Visit www.thecosmeticclinic.co.nz.

YOUR SCENT

SOULMATE By Kate Pierson

Your signature scent is almost like a sense of identity, one that you are communicating with the world around you. Not dissimilar to defining your personal aesthetic – makeup and fashion – finding the perfect perfume can be a progressive journey.

F

or some, they prefer the same perfume rain, hail or shine, while others have a ‘go to’ scent for different occasions, or depending on their mood. Here’s what we know when it comes to finding the perfume that bests suits your personality: For the free spirits: if you like to channel a bohemian goddess style – think a floor skimming maxi with flowers in your hair – a carefree and flirty fragrance could offer a match made in heaven. Tom Ford Café Rose Eau de Parfum is noted for its precious rose essences that are energised by exotic spices and dark coffee. For the minimalists: if your natural instinct is to embrace a pared back

aesthetic, grounded in effortless sophistication, then an uncomplicated fragrance is for you. Jo Malone’s Earl Grey and Cucumber Cologne is a musthave if this resonates with you. It opens with delicious notes of tea and cucumber before finishing with a to-die-for blend of honey and vanilla. For the romantics: if you consider yourself to be a true lover at heart, you’ll want a scent that can romance your senses. Paying homage to one of the dreamiest places on earth – the Mediterranean – and its beautiful rose flower, Dolce & Gabbana’s Velvet Rose has a scent reminiscent of a sundrenched sea breeze. Feminine and floral, it tells a captivating love story with its intoxicating tones.

With a warm, friendly vibe and a knack for creating beautiful hair, the team at Sirocco Hair Studio makes every client feel special. “We all share the same passion for helping people look and feel great,” says owner Rosanne Marks.

L

ocated in Mount Pleasant, Rosanne took over the business four years ago. She began her hairdressing career in Auckland 20 years ago, before moving to Christchurch in 2004. Rosanne and her team of talented stylists at Sirocco have many years of combined experience and knowledge to offer their clientele. “We

provide the full range of hair services and cover a wide range of skills. One of my stylists, Jennifer, is an expert in hair-ups for special occasions and can also cater to out-of-salon weddings.” The salon uses NAK Haircare products and NAK’s luxury colour system to create rich, vibrant colour, designed to last longer

and improve the condition of the hair. “NAK has also just launched structure complex shampoo and conditioner to complement the in-salon structure treatment, which strengthens and repairs hair during and after a chemical service. The new shampoo and conditioner is amazing and means you have the option to continue to repair your hair at home.” The family-friendly studio caters to all ages and was refurbished last year to provide a more spacious environment. “It’s a lovely relaxing space to get your hair done. Our focus is on great customer service and ensuring your hair reflects your own unique style and personality.” Located on Soleares Ave, plenty of offstreet parking is available. Phone 384 1743.

Smith and Boston was named after a great grandmother and grandmother - two rather natty dressers from Prebbleton. Sisters Ngaio Belle and Olive Hill have clearly inherited their passion for classic elegance, and design special occasion wear to flatter and impress, in sizes 6 to 22.

6 Cone St, Unit 2 Rangiora Ph. 03 313 7949

From weddings to award ceremonies it’s the time to dress up, especially when the cameras are out.

“C

ustomers find things that actually fit here – and it’s not because of stretchy lycra,” says Olive. “We design to flatter and fit a woman’s body. Even slim size 8’s change shape as they mature.” “We design for all figures, such as pear shapes for example, with size 12 tops and 14 around the hips – or the other way around, using the best silks from luxury fabric suppliers, pretty cottons, and fashionable laces. Everything’s made in Canterbury. There is no voluminous fabric. Dresses, skirts, jackets and boleros are lined and slink elegantly over the silhouette, instead of clinging. “We recommend wearing what we call a ‘false advertising’ bra too - for extra uplifting elegance.” From weddings to award ceremonies - it’s the time to dress up, especially when the cameras are out. “As women, we often get stuck in outdated beliefs of what suits us. A lady came in who’d never worn red, and walked out looking stunning in her new red dress. We encourage playing dress up here. Everyone relaxes, laughs and has a fabulous time, and we welcome those who to just want to have a try on too. With a nice new dress, everyone feels happy and confident again!” Smith and Boston, 6/573 Springs Road, Prebbleton, opens Tuesday-Friday 10am-5pm and Saturday 10am-4pm. A Electric colour lights up

AUTUMN FASHION Winter’s range of electric colour is rolling into Made in the Shade, famous for its vibrant collections – from classically elegant to offbeat and funky.

li and Sharon have the Beckenham fashion boutique brimming with uplifting bursts of brightness, whilst also embracing this season’s hues of blush pinks and baby blues. Detailed and contrasting sleeves, spots and stars also make an entrance. After 34 years guiding customers of all ages in looking fabulous with her clever advice, Ali is an experienced wardrobe stylist. “Often people try on something they would never believe would suit, and then get so many compliments – so word of mouth is tremendous,” she says. Some of New Zealand’s best designers are found here such as Optimum Knitwear in fine Merino, which can be ordered in the desired size and colour. “Another icon is Anne Mardell, who has feminine couture down to a ‘T’ for all sizes and heights. Her winter dresses are in contrasting textures of blues to autumn tones.” Bittermoon has beautiful burnout velvet – such as its stylish black pants and top ensemble, while ever-popular Not Your Daughter’s Jeans and Lissete.L pants give that timeless flattering fit. “Winter is wonderful for layering,” Ali adds. There’s puffer jackets in dusty pink, pale blues and silvers, long and short roll-collar vests and layering pieces. We veer towards natural fibres, rather than synthetics that don’t need ironing.” The Italian floaty silk outfits for overseas-summer weddings are exquisitely feminine and the head-turning, handmade Zsisksa Jewellery is certainly Made in the Shade’s perfect accessory. Are you loopy about Lego? Then you must visit Imagination Station at 113 Worcester Street. They’re all loopy there. Take Operations Manager Anna Ross, for instance. Anna, a former teacher with a background in science and design, happily confesses to a lifelong addiction to Lego - especially manifest during her student years!

38 May 11, 2017 Metropol

magination Station is a charity run, not-forprofit play and education centre. It was initially set up as a six month pilot programme in January 2015 after people from LEGO Users’ Group (LUG4/2), Christchurch City Council and Life in Vacant Spaces got talking. Imagination Station is still run by LUG4/2 (organisers of The Christchurch Brick Show), which is an incorporated society and registered charity. We watch families interact in the Lego and Duplo pits, the parents are as concentrated as their children – it’s a life affirming sight. It underscores the four key values of Imagination Station, which are Creativity, Engagement, Accessibility, and Exploration. There are 12 iMacs for use in robotics, stop motion animation and digital design classes. Imagination Station also run workshops for schools, and to individuals after school. “And we host birthday parties,” says Anna, “so parents can watch their kids have the greatest time while they get to relax.” Playtime at Imagination Station is free, but a small koha is always gratefully received. Anna recommends parents make bookings if planning to come on a weekend, public holiday or during the school holidays. Winter hours are 9.30am – 5.30pm. For information, visit info@imagination-station.org.nz or phone 03 260 1430.

from intermediate through to university, the workshops have been devised to provide participants with an immersive experience that aims to deepen their understanding of the world we live in while sweeping them up in the magic of theatre – and they’re fun! Indian Ink co-founder and The Pickle King co-writer Jacob Rajan says, “If they come away from it having felt waves of emotion, curiosity and delight - we’ll be thrilled! When I started down this road, suddenly it all came into focus. I popped a mask on my face and that shy person was gone - this new being was born and I loved it!” For more information about the ASB Performing Arts Community Grant supported workshops, visit indianink.co.nz/production/the-pickle-king/

rom its first production, The Belle of New York, in 1938, to the just closed Priscilla, this dynamic musical theatre company has been enriching our lives for a very long time! Wendy Riley, Communications Manager, points out that though the management side may be lean, the quality of their shows is world class. “In a case such as Priscilla, we’re often the first New Zealand theatre company given the rights to stage the latest large scale musicals, and we produce them to the highest international standards.” The photos reinforce her words - stupendous sets, glorious costumes, and huge casts. “Much of our success stems from the loyalty of our people – be they cast, crew, wardrobe or props – the hours they volunteer.” Next up, from 26 – 28 May at the Isaac Theatre, is a concert, An Evening of Rodgers and Hammerstein Classics, with solos such as: ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ and ‘The Sound of Music’; much loved duets such as: ‘People Will

RECIPES FOOD WINE BARS & CAFÉS RESTAURANTS

PREMIUM BEER By Nicholas Henare

THAT’S BELLY FRIENDLY

The range of beers available these days is staggering and I feel it’s my duty to throw myself on the grenade to try them all.

O

ne of the downsides to doing that is the incredible amount of weight I seem to be gaining in my endeavour to supply you, the reader, with a comprehensive breakdown on beverages in the market. So in rides Stella Artois to my rescue with “Légère” (pronounced with a soft G like “mirage”). Stella Artois was established in 1926 in Belgium with a long line of brewers since Sabastian Artois in 1708. I’ve always been partial to Stella Artois and you’ve got to love their branding and the quality of the product. Not that I’m a beer snob, but it’s been marketed well. Seriously, if you are

watching your carb burning regime, but you don’t want to miss out on a beer or two, what do you do? Légère has half the carbs of a normal beer, 1.0g per 100ml and 4.6 percent, and I’m pleased to say it hasn’t lost any of the taste. It’s a well-rounded flavour and it hasn’t lost any of the body I thought it would. When you are fighting the battle of the bulge these days at least you’ve got one more trick up the sleeve when drinking that amber brew. It’s good to see that competition is making the major breweries think about the product coming to the market. Légère is a nice addition to the choice selection. Cheers.

The Secret Garden

Welcome to Christchurch’s best kept secret... our sheltered, garden oasis at Dux Dine Share a Platter-for-Two, with a bottle or two of a crisp Pinot Gris or light Rose and make an afternoon of it. We will even provide the sunscreen and sun hats (plenty of parking, and free WiFi for your data addiction).

RASPBERRY & WHITE CHOCOLATE SLICE A recipe extract from Beautifully Real Food by Sam Murphy This slice is super easy and 100% delicious. If you’ve never used cacao butter before, you usually buy it in blocks or chunks. It can be a little more expensive than coconut oil, but cacao butter is what will give this slice a rich ‘white chocolate’ taste. To melt cacao butter, simply finely chop or grate the cacao butter and melt it in a small heatproof bowl over a pot of gently simmering water.

6-8 MAKES

PIECES

FOR THE BASE: 130g (1 cup) raw almonds 75g (1 cup) coconut flakes ½ teaspoon salt 240g or 12 large pitted Medjool dates

FOR THE FILLING 300g (2½ cups) raw cashews soaked for 3-6 hours 190ml (3/4 cup) coconut milk 125ml (1/2 cup) maple syrup or rice malt syrup 125ml (1/2 cup) water 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract with seeds 80ml (1/3 cup) melted cacao butter 80 ml (1/3 cup) melted coconut oil 100g (1 cup) frozen raspberries.

make the base, simply pulse the 1. To almonds, coconut flakes and salt in a food processor until a fine meal forms. Add the dates and process until it begins to stick together in a dough. Press into a lined 10x20cm (4 x 8 inch) loaf tin and freeze. Drain and rinse the cashews. Blend them with the coconut milk, maple syrup, water and vanilla in a high-speed blender until no lumps remain. Keep blending and slowly add the cacao butter and coconut oil. Pour over the base. Disperse frozen raspberries evenly throughout the slice and then smooth the top. Freeze the whole slice for 3-4 hours or ideally overnight until fully frozen. To serve, allow the slice to defrost for at least 15 minutes before cutting with a hot, wet knife. Keep stored in a sealed container in the freezer and simply defrost slices prior to consuming.

The Team

I CRAFT AND CULINARY MAGIC It’s time to raise the beer glasses in celebration of CBK Craft Bar and Kitchen’s first birthday on 13 May. Book a table - there’ll be offers for loyalty card members and anyone who shares the same birthday can show their ID for a complimentary meal.

t’s your home of 60 craft beers and ciders, with Good George, Stoke, Moa and revolving guest taps always poured freshly, along with a range of Three Boys and Emmerson’s and some craft beers new to the market like the Boneface range. It’s time to visit Hamish and the CBK team for a great craft beer, or perhaps the Doris Plum Cider. “The exciting news is CBK is now an off licence,” Hamish says. “Beers, ciders and wines can be taken home, including the new 1.8 litre bottles of Squealer and Growler from Good George, to keep thirsts quenched until the next visit.” The menu’s sure a smoking one with the in-house smoker adding to the magic. The Stone Grill has a smoked-meat option, and slow-smoked pesto chicken and crispy smoked duck and orange salad are winners. The Street Food section’s smoked chicken and bacon poppers will be fought over, as will the Pork Belly Dice cooked in cider. “Our pleasantly plump Barnes Wild Bluff Oysters are the best you can get - natural, with lemon herb dressing or tarted up in a Bloody Mary shot.” There’s Bar Beats Bingo on Thursdays, a kids menu, and a courtyard and private spaces make for a fabulous function venue. Visit CBK Kaiapoi 4/77 Hilton Street, Kaiapoi or the hot new website www.cbk.nz. Open Monday-Friday 11am until late and Saturday to Sunday 9am until late. Phone 327 9224.

AUTHENTIC ITALIAN

FLARE FLAVOUR

Caffé 1808 has authentic Italian charm down to a fine art. Beyond the immediate inspiration the sleek spot provides – think Ferrari red décor, intimate booths, and the distinct aroma of world-class coffee brews – the follow through is what really gives the café its compelling quality.

affé 1808’s well-executed strategy is what success looks like in action. Owner Chris Gauci says, “We are all about coffee and we have what we believe is the finest coffee in the world - Molinari. You will see other Caffé 1808’s around the world, and we are justly proud to represent the sophisticated identity, and are operating as the only Molinari branded café in the Southern Hemisphere.” While there is no disputing the focus is on delivering superb coffee, the café can’t help but excel in other areas too. “We have a great chef who loves what she does, and almost all our food is prepared fresh on site. Our signature 1808 breakfast consists of sausages, bacon and eggs prepared any way our customers want them.” The latter is a particularly interesting point, as it gives rise to the customer centric philosophy embraced by the entire team. The café also boasts a modern boardroom with a 60” screen which can be booked by the hour or day – perfect for those meetings when you want to have a sumptuous lunch and get work done at the same time! Access friendly with free WiFi, great acoustics, lots of natural light and a beautiful indoor-outdoor flow, Caffé 1808 is an oasis for everyone from the time poor to the time rich. Better yet, coffee lovers can take a slice of culinary paradise home with them with world-class beans and sleek coffee machines on offer. Experience it for yourself at 23 Islington Avenue, Waterloo Business Park, from 7.30am-3.30pm Monday to Friday. Visit http://www.thecrowdedhouse.co.nz/. THE TASTE OF

CULINARY SUCCESS Indian Pearl is everything you would expect in an Indian food restaurant, and more.

O

wner and chef, Birendra Singh, recently moved his very popular restaurant from Papanui to Colombo Street in Sydenham. The new premises are more spacious, there

is some off-street parking and the décor is bright and energetic. Pendant lighting creates a moody ambience. It is a family run business. Birendra brings over twenty years of experience as a chef to the menu. Succulent dishes are marinated and cooked in a charcoal tandoor. On the menu are favourites such as Rogan Josh, and Chicken Handi - sliced chicken cooked with tomatoes, onion, cream, fresh coriander and thick gravy. The Pearl Special Chicken is Birendra’s signature dish, cooked and finished with freshly ground herbs and spices. Indian Pearl specialises in Northern Indian cuisine, harking back to Birendra’s own roots in North India, and is well known for its authentic curries and freshly baked naan. There are lamb and seafood mains, and vegetarian and gluten free meals. All the mains are cooked mild, medium, or hot to suit tastes. Of 24 TripAdvisor reviews, 21 are ‘excellent’ and three are ‘very good’. Guests have nothing but praise for the staff and the service. The wine list is packed with New Zealand wines, or if preferred, you can BYO wine. There is also a full bar. Open seven days from 11.30am until late, there are $10 lunch deals every day, and all meals are available while dining in or to take away. See the website www.indianpearlrestaurant.co.nz or phone 379 1863 to make a booking.

EXTERIORS INTERIORS BUILDING OUTDOORS KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

KITCHEN CANDY By Kate Pierson

Whether you consider yourself a domestic goddess or domestically challenged (present company included), there is nothing wrong with pursuing a vanity project when it comes to your kitchen. Better still, you have an unbeatable recipe for style success if your chosen kitchen candy is capable and eye-catching.

Here’s a rundown of some of the fancy numbers that have stolen our hearts:

Le Creuset Peruh Kettle: tea and coffee preparation has never looked prettier than with this preppy little number. It’s a bit of a show-off in looks and function with an anti-slip, heat-resistant ergonomic handle and great compatibility with gas, electric, induction and ceramic surfaces.

60 May 11, 2017 Metropol

Vitamix Total Nutrition Center: a smooth-ie operator! From your favourite healthy juices, to tasty hot soups for winter, the nutrition center is the perfect blend (pun intended) of features.

Magimix Cooking Food Processor: if you’ve ever dreamed about earning ‘expert’ status in the kitchen, then this beauty has your name written all over it. It is the powerhouse of the kitchen with the ability to whisk, steam, blend, mix, puree, grate, mince, slice, chop and the list goes on. An induction cooking system ensures the perfect heat and a rinse function takes the hassle out of cleaning.

Smeg Dolce Stil Novo Wine Cooler: champagne anyone? Designed in partnership with some of Italy’s top sommeliers, this clever cooler offers independent temperature zones, perfect for storing red, white and sparkling wines.

Dolce & Gabbana Smeg ‘Sicily is my Love’ Toaster: yes, it certainly has a grand title, but its esteemed moniker is nothing short of what this culinary star deserves. High fashion has found its way into the kitchen with this collection.

We have it on good authority that Total Food Equipment is a haven for foodies and a stockist of many of these brands. Bon Appétit!

HAVING A UNIQUE SKILLSET IS IMPORTANT TO CREATING BRILLIANT DRIVEWAYS.

PAVING THE WAY FORWARD FOR INNOVATION

Laying a concrete driveway can be a bit of an art form. It can also be tricky, especially on hill sites, and in difficult to access areas.

J

ohnny Parkins and his team at Drivecrete Concrete Placing specialise in such things. They also do pathways, floor slabs, asphalt, retaining walls and fences, and more. The focus, however, is driveways. In Christchurch, there is still a lot of work to do in repairing and replacing earthquake damaged driveways. Unfortunately, there is also a lot of remedial work to be done – fixing sub-standard earthquake repairs. Of course, Drivecrete also lays driveways for new builds, and Johnny can offer advice on insurance work. Johnny prides himself on his professionalism and being client focused.

He has a long list of happy clients, and regularly gets referrals from them. He remains personally involved in every project. He is the person clients talk to initially, from the free no-obligation quote, to the very end of the project. He has lots of advice if needed and plenty of experience on both the most suitable product for the job, and understanding clients’ needs and ideas. Having a unique skillset is important to creating brilliant driveways, he says. “You have to be able to visualise it first, then get to work creating something aesthetically pleasing.” Visit www.drivecrete.co.nz to see photos of Drivecrete projects, and to contact Johnny to discuss your own project.

STELLAR SUCCESS FROM THE GROUND UP

While it can be difficult to pinpoint the reason for success, the exceptional performance of Andrews of Canterbury is easily attributable to the team’s impressive experience.

P

roudly New Zealand owned and operated, the business (named after its two founders, both called Andrew), has enjoyed considerable success in residential, farm and security fencing; retaining walls; decking, along with other projects that thrive thanks to the team’s expertise and lateral thinking. Working alongside other big name businesses like Mike Greer and Naylor Love, Andrews of Canterbury has recently added some significant projects to its professional portfolio. These include the brand new deck at Shirley Primary School for Corbel

Construction. This is now known as one of the biggest decks in Christchurch. Embracing a ‘no problems, only solutions’ philosophy, the business prides itself on being diverse and flexible for clients. Working predominantly in the security and residential markets at the moment due to a concentrated flow of work in these sectors, the team knows enthusiasm and energy is paramount for a seamless, timely delivery, as is meeting and exceeding client expectations. A LIVING SPACE

YOU LOVE By Kate Pierson

From pastel hues to energetic tones, with a splash of patterns in the mix, 2017 living décor is being willingly governed by a fresh breed of colours.

1. 3. Colours have strong psychological properties, with the ability to transform our mood.

2.

5.

A

beautiful remedy for what ails you; colours have strong psychological properties, with the ability to transform our mood. Blue, for example, connotes serenity, reflection and calm, with a soothing soul to it, while pink encourages physical tranquility, representing warmth and love. The full colour spectrum offers infinite potential when it comes to creating a Zen living environment and we’ve collated a mood board of colour rich pieces for your living space that will offer a perfect combination of style and sensory stimulus that is sure to leave you feeling inspired. While it has its share of critics who dub it ‘pseudo-science’, colour therapy is nonetheless widely recognised as a tried and true way to support wellbeing. It’s a practice that hasn’t gone out of fashion – in more ways than one!

1. FUNCTIONAL

TRINKETS By Kate Pierson

As a self-proclaimed trinket-addict, I can readily empathise with those who end up with ‘odd bods’ in their homes.

F

ortunately for our kind, there has been a flood of beautiful trinkets onto the market that serve a functional purpose as well. From hosting stray hairpins in the bathroom to jewels in the bedroom, right on to matches for candles in the living room, functional trinkets can have

many different uses. Thanks to their chameleon like nature, you can move them between rooms to serve whatever purpose you like. We’re particularly taken with Moroccan and Indian style designs, which add a striking pop of colour to your chosen space.

A-HEAD OF THE

STYLE GAME By Kate Pierson

If you’re a loyalist to the trend forecasts it may not come as much of a surprise to you that upholstered headboards are all the rage for 2017.

Headboards achieve instant glamour and can channel an almost artwork style vibe in a space that needs some perking up.

HEATHERLY DESIGN IMAGES

T

hese inspiring accents for your boudoir are no shrinking wall violet; they have triumphantly replaced the timber frames that have dominated for so long. From a classic feature piece in more pared back hues featuring buttons, right through to an eclectic floral design, headboards achieve instant glamour and can channel an almost artwork style vibe in a space that needs some perking up. From bespoke options, right through to off-the-shelf models, the upholstered headboard provides an excellent anchor for your bedroom. It offers a

starting point for an overarching visual narrative, enabling you to introduce complementary accents, from throws and cushions, right through to larger pieces like a chaise longue or the like. Usually reserved for those of celebrity status, or the boutique hotels we frequent on special occasions, the market saturation of this striking feature means they are much more affordable with a diverse range of options for you to experiment with. A particular favourite for 2017 is the combination of Pantone’s Colour of the Year – greenery – and plush velvet, the fabric of the times.

A MISSING LAYER Cymon Allfrey

AS OUR CITY CONTINUES TO STRIVE FORWARD IN ITS REBUILD, ARCHITECT CYMON ALLFREY QUESTIONS WHETHER WE ARE BUILDING A CITY WITHOUT SUBSTANCE.

A

s you walk the streets of any central city you notice and engage with the buildings that stand out, that ignite a reaction, that have character. Yet if we peel back the layers, of any city, it is the buildings that pose no real architectural interest or value that are the ones which add the greatest character to the city.

BEFORE

They are the ones that bring diversity of space and environment, the ones that create ‘grit’ to a cityscape. They are the ones that add to the city from a social perspective. For small businesses, artists and start-ups, these buildings provide a space in which to operate from, a work environment in which they can put down

roots and call their own. Through the lowend rental of these buildings comes their opportunity. This underbelly of commercial life creates culture and energy within a city. If you reflect on Christchurch, as it was pre-quake, the central city was filled with these types of operations – sole traders, small boutique companies, creatives. Their presence brought life and energy to the

AFTER

For a city to be successful, it needs to be a city of substance and diversity. city, which in turn brought with it other business and amenity. Without this diversity of people we face the risk of creating a central city without substance, something that almost feels a little fake. As a team of architects we fill the gaps that the anchor and large private projects leave, but many of these gap fillers are

falling through as the yield and rental rates along with elevated building costs work against the value of the building. As a commercial venture, if the end value doesn’t stack up then the project doesn’t fly. With high supply coming through the yield isn’t going to drop, and while rental rates may move slightly, it will not be enough to solve the problem.

Essentially, the cost of constructing and fitting out a new commercial building to standard doesn’t allow a rental opportunity for the smaller niche market business – so where do they go? While we have seen some innovative approaches to low-cost offices with rent-adesk and co-operative space sharing, most of this is now full and it is still significantly more expensive than the pre-quake lowend rental that was found throughout the city. For a city to be successful, it needs to be a city of substance and diversity. And while this may come to central Christchurch, it is a long time away, as it is only as we see regeneration within the new that it will emerge. While I can’t see a solution, I can see a reality in which Christchurch will lose even more of its character. And while we can control this loss in the built environment by crafting a new one, we can’t replace lost social character. We have planned for Christchurch to be a better city. It will be more accessible, safer, greener. But with this comes the loss of the underbelly and the cultural diversity of the city environment. It is an impossible situation. What does it mean to the fabric of our city if we lose an entire layer? www.caarc.co.nz

Pottery is one of the oldest human inventions. Craft potter Frank Hakkaart has been a part of that long history for over twenty five years. He has taught pottery groups, tutored university students, and exhibited his work nationally.

ost recently Frank has been throwing beautiful, useable pieces in his new studio in West Melton. The craft potter is a disappearing thing. “A lot of ceramic being done now is castware. The ability to sit down and throw pots, basic functional pieces, is not being taught the same way anymore,” he says. If he is not developing new designs and glazes in his studio, Frank is creating uniquely crafted pottery pieces. “Each piece is handmade from start to finish.” With plenty of gift ideas, from personalised coffee mugs, teapots, pet bowls, vases and more, each piece is designed to bring the beauty of handcrafted ceramics to your home. JAGUAR LEAVES COMPETITORS IN DUST By Ben Selby

The world loves the Jaguar F-PACE. The performance luxury SUV has cleaned up at the 2017 World Car of the Year Awards, earning the prestigious title of World Car of the Year 2017 and World Car Design of the Year.

T THE PERFORMANCE LUXURY SUV HAS CLEANED UP AT THE 2017 WORLD CAR OF THE YEAR AWARDS

he double success makes the F-PACE only the second vehicle in World Car of the Year’s 13 year history to win both awards. The F-PACE saw off the competition in a vote made by the World Car of the Year jury, made up of 75 automotive journalists from 24 countries. Director of Jaguar Design Ian Callum, also responsible for other Jaguar models like the XE saloon and F Type sports car, had this to say

about the F-PACE’s success. “The F-PACE is our first ever SUV, but it is clearly recognisable as a Jaguar and for it to win the 2017 World Car of the Year trophy vindicates our decision to bring our unique design principles and dynamic qualities to a new sector of the market.” The F-PACE is Jaguar’s fastest growing model to date. It is available in a range of petrol or diesel options and a wide variety of equipment levels are on offer.

BE RECKONED WITH T A FORCE TO By Ben Selby

Lamborghini has used the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show to showcase two new models to their exclusive supercar line up, the new Huracan Performante and Aventador S.

IT STILL FEATURES THE SAME MAD STYLING, BUT WITH SUBTLE VISUAL CHANGES OVER ITS PREDECESSOR.

he Huracán Performante is the stripped out, low fat version, of the standard Huracán LP610. It combines new lightweight technologies and an improved all wheel drive system. Lamborghini say the standard V10 engine has also benefited from an upgrade. The main draw card for the new Performante is Lamborghini’s new patented active aerodynamic system, named Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva, or ALA. This enables the driver to choose levels of aerodynamic downforce, or drag for the road and track. “The Huracán Performante is a product of our advanced technological developments in order to design a car that delivers perfect performance,” says Lamborghini Chairman and CEO Stefano Domenicali. The new Aventador S is the latest flagship Lamborghini, succeeding the standard Aventador, which began production in 2011. It still features the same mad styling, but with subtle visual changes over its predecessor. Power has gone up 40hp to 740hp, the sprint to 100km/h from rest is a blistering 2.9 seconds, and a top speed of 250km/h is sure to rearrange ones fillings. An all new four-wheel-steer system has also been added to enhance stability at speed.

boot, this model boasts features plus. The extras are a bonus including umbrella storage in the door, a removable rear light that can be used as a torch, Bluetooth and a rear view camera. The folded metal bonnet gives you a refined contour and very nice exterior lines. GPS is a blessing for those that become disorientated in Christchurch. For the techno-junkies, i-Link for iPhone and the base in the speakers is an excellent touch; a quality sound to go with a quality vehicle. With 206 Kw and lane assist with 4-wheel drive as an option, it reads like the ‘who’s who’ of cars, but really, you have to drive it to understand how it ticks all the boxes. A multifunction steering wheel means keeping your eyes where they should be. My biggest test these days when I pick up a new model is my children - the biggest car critics of all. They loved the LED interior lighting trim and the USB chargers for devices. I loved the space and performance of drive. Combine that with the price tag and range of driving options and you really have a winner.

L

SUBTLY SUBLIME By Nicholas Henare

Wow, what a saucy little minx the Peugeot 308 GT Blue HDI 2L is to drive.

ooking from the outside, it’s as subtle as they come but with a real natural appeal. It takes getting into the driver’s seat to appreciate her true beauty. She’s quick off the mark with 181 kW and heaps of room. She’s sporty, but not enough to make an older driver, like myself, look like I’m trying to be something I’m not. But that’s the key when you hit sport mode; it’s all on, with the amplified engine growl being something that makes the pulse race. I hadn’t even rounded the block and I had a smile on my face. Only two other cars have made me do that in the last 12 months. The i-cockpit was easy to navigate and operate. It has sexy but subtle written all over the dash, with clean lines and efficient connectivity between driver and car. It’s simple but stylish. You can tell I liked it, right? The suede leather interior is something different, and I was worrying a tad about dropping my takeaway curry on it. It’s got a high-quality cabin, that’s for sure. I didn’t try the paddle shifters on the steering wheel to change gear because I just didn’t need to; it was already great fun. Breaking and acceleration were up with the best of them; and it cornered very well. A spitfire of a car, it didn’t let me down, no matter what I threw its way.
