Although motherhood can be a thankless task a lot of the time and time to reflect is a luxury many simply don’t have, to those small humans you are enough, you are important and you are worthy. To all the mums – and mums to be – out there, happy Mother’s Day from the Metropol team. Job well done.

Once upon a time, Rebecca Swindell was in her local St Vincent de Paul shop when she spied a shelf of vintage lace and fabric remnants. “The needlework, the hours of love that had gone into creating these beautiful pieces... imagine if they ended up in landfill!”

ebecca returned home with her tablecloths, pillowcases and doilies then looked at the rack of op shop garments hanging in her studio. It was 2013, her stall of home décor was selling well at the recently opened Pallet Pavilion,

and the op shop clothes were popular, too, but Rebecca’s artistic eye was already envisioning something else. She slipped an op shop dress over her mannequin and got out her pins and tacking thread. RLS Redesigned Boutique was open for business.

Rebecca says she was born creative. “When I was little, I’d sit beside mum while she was working on her sewing machine and stitch away on scraps she gave me; from the age of ten I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer.” Apart from markets or country fairs, Rebecca’s romantic, wearable works of art can be found at the Lyttle Kiwi, 15 London Street, Lyttelton. Gradually she began the healing process, spending time alone in Bali, studying Argentinean Tango in Buenos Aires, taking precious time out with her children and, of course, focused on writing her book. “During Marty’s illness I was writing as we were experiencing and learning so much. After he passed, I continued to write. I just knew intuitively one day I would write my memoir as I had so much to share with the intention to help others through their challenging times. “Writing my memoir was so healing. I think everyone should write their own memoir even if you don’t publish, as it is a very cathartic experience.” So what’s her biggest piece of advice on grief and healing? “Your grief represents your love, so the greater the grief, the greater the love. It is your grief, so process your grief in your own way, do not do anything you don’t want to do just because you are being told to do it by well-meaning people. “Keep moving even when you feel you can’t, even if it is for a walk on a beach, in the bush, get out in the sun as nature is a great healer. Know that you will find joy again, one day, when you have processed and healed your broken heart.”

She talks to Metropol about heartbreak and the decision to put pen to paper. Lorraine was just 19 when she became a national superstar, winning the Miss Universe crown in 1983. She married Martin in 2009 and, when he was diagnosed with lymphoma, she became his primary caregiver, waging the four-year battle by his side. “We had a relationship which was on a very deep spiritual level which came from a heartfelt and soulful connection,” Lorraine says of their bond. “We were our closest allies and always wanted the absolute best for one another. At the end of our time together on this earth, we could not have been any closer. Marty’s comment to me on our last wedding anniversary together on Feb 14, 2016, ‘we have gone from not being able to keep our hands off each other, to not being able to keep our eyes off each other’.” Heartbroken after his death in March 2016, Lorraine felt like she had no idea who she was or what she wanted to do. “My heart was broken. I took a year off work as I needed to allow myself time to deal with my grief.”

You first started at World as a part time retail assistant, what attracted you to the industry? A job… a welcome alternative to schooling. Little did I know… I had always been interested in fashion and shopping, so it seemed a natural place for me to spend my time – around a host of uniquely interesting people and within an enviroment and business that offered such enticing ideas. How do you define style? I do not even try, except to say that it is not an entirely visual pursuit. Style and fashion add to one’s sense of self and, if done correctly, they can express your personality and character in a way that makes you feel the best possible version of yourself.

How did your love of cooking and baking begin? When I was very little I used to love hanging out with my mother in the kitchen. She was an amazing baker and there were always delicious beaters and bowls to lick! But before long, I was in there helping

to stir and roll, mixing cakes and biscuits. I just loved it. I discovered a magical sense of making people happy when I appeared with a batch of fresh-made biscuits or a cake. As a young kid it was wonderful to get that feeling of success and usefulness. I was hooked for life.

I think a large part of my own success as a writer of recipes comes down to practicality – the recipes use everyday ingredients, they don’t take forever for make, they work and most importantly they taste yummy (you’d think that would be a given, but trust me, it

Your new book ESSENTIAL Volume Two: Sweet Treats for Every Occasion is all about the sweet side of life. Are you a bit of a sweet tooth yourself and what are some of your favourite recipes? I actually don’t have a very sweet tooth, but I love to bake and when I make something sweet I want it to be fabulous. Baking and dessert making is an area of cooking where a good recipe is absolutely crucial, as it’s all about chemistry and ratios. I love making biscuits to have in the tins when people come over or to take to someone as a little gift. My legendary chocolate chippie biscuits have evolved out of my mother’s recipe, and I love that wonderful idea of carrying on the torch. And I love to make cakes, as they deliver such a sense of celebration that makes any occasion a special occasion. When I’ve got friends coming over for dinner I’ll always make a dessert as it’s such an easy way to make people feel treated. I just love it when people come up to me excitedly to tell me what they’ve been cooking, or that I have helped them to feel confidence and success in the kitchen. I love being part of people’s lives like this, it’s an honour. And being in this trusted position does mean that I can help to make change and put my weight behind important initiatives like Life Education Trust Canterbury. The work they do to help kids build a sense of self-esteem and make healthy choices is so important. If the next generation can grow to be strong and healthy and happy then our New Zealand society will be strong and healthy and happy. What is the most enjoyable or fulfilling aspect of what you do? I think it’s about helping people to feel empowered. In my own life I have found cooking to be a rich, strong thread that weaves all the bits of my life together and I feel there is so much merit in the idea of building a good life and a strong family around the table. Food and cooking connects us to nature and the environment, to our friends and family, to our own culture and community, and when we cook with a new and unfamiliar ingredient from some foreign shore it connects us to other cultures. Riverside Reinvention

Few developments signify the greater rebuild in the way the bars opening up along the Avon River in the central city do.

lthough the post-quake incarnation of ‘The Strip’ was conceptualised by Antony Gough, it was the building alongside on the corner of Oxford Terrace and Hereford Street purchased and developed by Richard Peebles and Max Bremner which was first off the starting block, with three businesses now raising the bar for nightlife in the city – both in the figurative and literal sense of the expression. Fat Eddie’s, a popular jazz and blues bar

in Sol Square before the tremors, while downstairs two new businesses – upscale restaurant Original Sin and 1930s-themed cocktail bar Kong are taking a big bite out of the hospitality market. With extensive experience running clubs in both Sydney and New York, Manager Stuart Black is charged with the running of all three venues, while Executive Chef David Nicol utilising ideas from his 20 years working in Europe, Asia, Australia, the Caribbean and the Middle East.

As such, cuisine is at the heart of this hospitality trifecta, with pizzas the piece de resistance upstairs at Fat Eddies. Architectural Designer John Ayers and the clever hand responsible for translating his vision into the art and theming, Dean Johnstone, have created a space of many faces. Twice the size of its former incarnation, Fat Eddies can accommodate 320 customers within its confines, that feature a dark interior, velvet-covered booth seats,

wrought iron, high ceilings and chandeliers all tying this Christchurch institution to American jazz legends and prohibition-era rebellion, layered with slices of New York and New Orleans. Although original Fat Eddies style pays homage to the scarfie flat, its latest incarnation has given this concept an upmarket makeover, with the use of fabric and colour, hand-blown neon, poster originals, and a 1960s television cabinet, all designed and made by Dean and his Dream It team.

Raising the bar for nightlife in the city – both in the figurative and literal sense Meanwhile, taking its name from the 1933 movie King Kong, Kong is a swanky cocktail bar, with an art deco feel designed to reflect the glamour of the 1930s. Purposing an escape from the 21st century mundane, John and Dean lose you in a glamourous age when style and panache peaked. The back of the bar is designed as a radiogram, and the lobby doors are the doors to a 1930’s lift, complete with lit floor indicator dial. Brass beading on furniture, authentic lighting and the general essence of luxe will have you screaming like Fay Wray at closing time. Seating 140 people, inside and out, Original Sin is a powerful temptation, offering a fine dining experience in the heart of the city, with an immaculate fit out and menu to match. Although the Christchurch earthquakes dealt the city’s nightlife a serious blow, with iconic hotspot affectionately known as ‘The Strip’ perhaps the biggest casualty, the riverside reinvention is reinvigorating the city’s social scene in no small part.

The hunt for a new winter coat can be an arduous task if you don’t know what you are looking for. The looming winter season brings with it a huge display of styles, colours, textures, prints and lengths to keep your appetite for coats satiated – if not a little confused! Here’s our hit predictions (peppered with a little advice) on how to cut through the clutter.

Ask yourself, what function do you need your coat to perform? Let it reflect your personality and most importantly lifestyle. Is it loud and eccentric or tailored and subtle to last year after year? ecent research shows about one in four New Zealanders become infected with influenza each winter, but many don’t develop symptoms and may in fact be unaware they’re sick. Tens of thousands seek medical advice for flu-like symptoms every year and, on average, about 400 die from influenza, or its complications, annually. Health Minister Dr David Clark recently rolled up a sleeve for his annual influenza vaccination and says the goal for 2018 is to break last year’s record, which saw more than 1.2 million New Zealanders getting vaccinated. “Our influenza season normally begins from June, so getting vaccinated by mid-May is the best way to be protected for winter,” he says. “If you’re vaccinated, you’re less likely to catch influenza, less likely to pass it on to others, and less likely to be severely ill if you do catch it.” This year’s funded vaccine will protect against four strains of influenza for the first time, including the A(H3N2) strain that badly affected people in the Northern Hemisphere during their winter. Health Intelligence Group, ESR Public Health Physician Dr Sarah Jefferies says one of the challenges with influenza is that there is evidence that infection does not always cause symptoms. “Research shows about one in four people may be infected with influenza during a moderate flu season, and the majority of those people may not know they have flu,” she says. “This is one reason why immunisation is a key line of defence.”

The health burden of seasonal influenza in New Zealand varies from year to year and across the world, significant time and resource goes into increasing the effectiveness of these vaccinations, according to the Director of the Immunisation Advisory Centre at the University of Auckland, Associate Professor Nikki Turner. “Vaccine effectiveness is difficult to accurately predict season-to-season and person-to-person,” Associate Professor Turner says. “We know overall that when the vaccine types more closely match the circulating strains the vaccine is likely to be more effective. Each year, for the northern and southern hemisphere, there are meetings to decide what is the best prediction for circulating strains and therefore what is the best choice for the seasonal vaccine. “The vaccines arriving in New Zealand for our winter season have a new updated AH3N2 strain in them, which is a better match and we hope that will give better effectiveness. The government-subsidised vaccines for this season also are quadrivalent (two A strains and two B strains), which should give better protection than the traditional trivalent that have only one B strain in them.” In New Zealand, those at high risk of getting influenza, including those aged 65 and older, pregnant women, and people with chronic or serious health conditions, such as heart disease, cancer or severe asthma, can get their flu shot for free. nd yet James (Jim) Dykes has made good on this notion, not letting his age of 91 years get in the way of the production of an impressive 16.5m mural in Rangiora. When the removal of a shed left the large grey concrete wall exposed at the Kip McGrath Education Centre in Ivory Street, James’ son, Director Dr Grant Dykes asked his dad for some ideas and he ended up putting his paintbrush wielding hand up for the task. “I wanted to depict something of the emptiness which is so much of New Zealand,” James says.

“So I thought what better way than to represent the flood plain; the tussock covered riverbed with the sun still to come up.” The fact that is has taken a year to complete, working just an hour at a time around the harsh sun and reliance on his wife Jean and daughter in law Delia for assistance, just further adds to this impressive feat of determination. Outgoing Mayor David Ayers was on hand to unveil the masterpiece last month, pointing to the historical significance of Canterbury’s braided rivers and current significance of the region’s arts in his speech.

asked him how Glenmorangie got to where it is now. “I grabbed it by the scruff of the neck and ran with it. I knew Glenmorangie was something special.” Part scientist, part artist, Bill’s skills and attitude to whisky is one of experimentation and discovery and he’s here to release the Pios, the 9th release from Glenmorangie’s acclaimed ‘Private Edition’ series, fully matured in ex-American rye whiskey barrels. Aptly named for the Gaelic word ‘spice’, these barrels impart flavours never before seen in a Glenmorangie – rich and sweet with toffee, clove, cinnamon and nutmeg, with brazil nuts and citrus developing in the finish. I asked Bill what he was most proud of and I was pleased to hear it was one of my favourite chocolate malt whiskys, the Glenmorangie Signet. “I found the Signet ground breaking. I achieved what I wanted in that. Although I’m seeing other brands making similar styles its still stands out as a great benchmark for me.” “I see a great future for whisky lovers and, with such a fine event as Dramfest, there’s plenty of room to expand one’s palate.” With his son and daughter following in his footsteps, there’s a great future too for the Lumsden legacy.

Open for nine weeks, the restaurant and bar already have a loyal following of regulars and there is plenty of room for more. The Good Home Ferrymead celebrates Christchurch’s botanical heritage with living plants oxygenating the central bar area. The spacious interior is separated into individual zones including The Johnnie Walker Whisky Lounge, library area, children’s play section and sheltered courtyard, all united by a common theme reflecting well-appointed batch meets kiwi quarter acre dream, while the Joel Hart mural brings iconic kiwi art to the party. Andy says there is something new to see every visit, and the library exchanges books. However, the upright piano minus keys always stores the cutlery, and Andy’s favourite spot – the leather chairs by the open fire – won’t be going anywhere soon. Its bespoke menu of gastropub food is comforting with an interesting twist on children’s specials too, and the drinks range includes classic premium beers, craft beers, fine wines, cocktails, and a fine whisky range to sample. You are refreshingly flipping the clean eating obsession on its head, why? Baking for me will always be about good old sugar, just the way my parents have always baked. There is just no substitute that tastes as good to me. I love food and I’ll give anything a go but this is home for me. I’ll admit, it’s not friendly on the waistline and I wish I had the willpower to eat healthy all the time, but I just love sugar and carbs too much.

sweet as sugar Sweet versus savoury have been waging a delicious battle against each other for the longest time, recuiting devotees along the way. One of the most dedicated advocates of sugar, spice and all things nice, is Jenny Ha of Laced With Sugar.

Have you always had a sweet tooth and what are some of your favourite concoctions? I grew up in my parents’ bakery, so I basically inherited a sweet tooth. My childhood was filled with sweet treats, but I ate way too much of it early on. I got tired of cake (yes, it’s possible) and given the choice, I’d always choose savoury over sweet. It wasn’t until I was 18 when I started baking for myself that I got my sweet tooth back. My favourite concoction is my chocolate and raspberry brownie. It’s so simple but seriously so good. I can’t tell you how much I’ve eaten (too much) but I’m still not sick of them yet, so that’s a good sign. You are very generous with your recipes – do you come up with these from scratch or look to innovate existing ones? I always bake from a recipe. I research a tonne of recipes before I get into the kitchen and have had such good luck finding ones that I love. I make tweaks here and there, but I don’t have the talent to come up with recipes from scratch. I bow down to everyone that can – it’s hard work! I’d say I’m more of a recipe curator than maker. I’d also happily put my hand up to be a recipe tester if anyone’s looking! What’s on the horizon for Laced with Sugar? Nothing as of yet, unfortunately! I’ve still got so much left to learn so that will be me for the next wee while. You never know though, a little Laced With Sugar shop might just be around the next corner!

Tea is on the rise and not just to be consumed in the most traditional of ways, with tea ‘bars’ popping up globally, the increasing profile of tea cocktails and now it seems we have an increasing appetite for tea as an ingredient, adding a new dimension of taste, texture and flavour to our foods.

ingredients • 2/3 cup (160ml) thickened cream • 40g unsalted butter, chopped • 2 teaspoons loose Dilmah Exceptional Elegant Earl Grey tea leaves • 170g fine-quality bittersweet chocolate (not unsweetened), finely chopped • 100g feuilletine • Murray River pink salt, to decorate

method Combine cream and butter in a small saucepan over high heat. Bring to the boil. Remove from heat. Add the Elegant Earl Grey tea leaves and stir to combine. Set aside for 5 minutes to infuse. Place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Pour hot cream through a fine sieve over the chocolate, pressing with the back of a spoon to squeeze as much cream as possible through. Stir until chocolate melts and mixture is smooth. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 2 hours or until firm. Line an oven tray with baking paper. Place the feuilletine in a bowl. Roll a teaspoon of chocolate mixture into balls and roll in the feuilletine to coat. Note, when rolling your truffles, ensure your hands are cool and wear rubber gloves so the truffles don’t melt. Place on the lined tray. Repeat with remaining chocolate mixture. Top truffles with pink salt to serve. Makes 30.

As the Japanese say, ‘Oishii!’ (delicious).

Feijoa Paste

eijoa season is here and if you know of a pair of healthy and productive feijoa trees, why not make the most of nature’s bounty? Delicious with cold meats and cheeses, it will keep for months once bottled. Makes 800g. Ingredients • 10 ripe medium sized feijoas (about 1kg) • 3 cooking apples • 600mls water • 600g sugar Method Remove skin from feijoas, roughly chop fruit and weigh: you need 300g of sugar per 500g of fruit. Put feijoa peel, cores and apples into a pan; cover with water. Cook until soft and mushy – about 10 minutes. Strain through a fine sieve, pressing firmly to get all the liquid from the apple. In a

large heavy bottomed pot cook chopped feijoas in this liquid until soft, then mash. Add sugar to feijoa pulp; stir until dissolved. Cook slowly on the lowest heat, stirring every 2-3 minutes until thick. When it’s ready (about 2 hours) the spoon should start to meet resistance and the mixture come away from the sides. Pour while hot into straight sided sterilised jars and seal.

Some homes in recent times have been so ‘windowed’ that the hanging of artworks and mirrors has been a real conundrum. In some rooms, small can be enough. For instance, diminutive high windows through which you see branches and leaves are perfect for providing the zen of greenery, a glimpse of hillside or of sunset sky. There’s another consideration, and that’s refuge. For calm, we crave a sense of retreat. Corners without windows are a great place

to sit. No-one can look in; great on a dark, windy night when curled up with a blanket, watching a movie. Most of us, once we’ve built or bought, never change these design elements. So what can you do to improve the mood of your space? For calm warmth, try painting walls in a neutral colour with a red base. Hang tactile, sumptuous curtains. And organise good clutter, like reading material, into a single pile. It works!

LIN A CR It used to be that business leadership really consisted of business ownership. Whoever owned the business called the shots, set the tempo and determined the culture. They were seen as the nucleus of the whole business. At its best this worked because they intuitively knew their people, product or service, and how to get the best out of everyone. At the other end of the spectrum you had a potential powder keg. Leaders are not necessarily born. All of us have probably experienced leaders at both ends of this continuum and leadership remains the most important whilst perplexing source of business success. If you do even the simplest of google searches on the word leadership, two things stand out. Firstly, there are literally millions of references to leadership and leaders, with not only the latest international thinking on the subject, but the corniest. And secondly, surprisingly it feels a very masculine space. The accompanying synonyms provided for leadership were guidance, direction, authority,

o glues, foams or polyesters are used – only New Zealand wool, Australian fabrics, spring systems from Denmark and quality Vietnamese latex. “Health revolves around diet, exercise and sleep,” Director David Henderson says. “Sleep affects weight, mental wellbeing and simply the ability to function the next day.” The original company, Clegg Brothers, pioneered in 1934 from a Brighton garage, was ironically located across the road from the current premises 40 years ago. David’s father bought the business in 1974, renaming it around the millennium to reflect the transition from entry level to a top end wool-based product. David is hands-on in the new Sydenham showroom, where customers are also welcomed by Nicky, company ‘camp mother’. The European-aligned, custom-designed mattress and slat-bed system visually takes up less bedroom real estate. David likens bulky standard mattress and base systems to “a big chocolate sponge cake,” compared to a Dreamwool bed – “a piece of chocolate brownie”. It’s quality without the bulk – finer, lighter, but exceptionally comfortable and supportive. Firm, medium, soft support can be customised to body weight and contouring to each partner, there are nine ranges, from a basic model, up to the Heaven, Paradise and Euphoria ranges – likened to lying on a floaty cloud. “There’s no compromise on quality or performance, just variation in comfort layers and spring systems,” he says. “We use three times the material than the average mattress as we make for comfort, not a price point. Change has perhaps the most pervasive influence over life itself; its presence, one of life’s few inevitabilities. On the local level, change is perhaps even more inevitable, with the city streetscape changing at an almost unprecedented pace. Although the chameleon-like nature of our burgeoning city at present will be the status quo for many, many years to come, the calibre of the city’s architecture on this progressive journey too is experiencing a metamorphosis of somewhat epic proportions. While the physical incarnation of our central city is being reimagined at the talented hand of teams of creative visionaries, it’s not just the city’s commercial capacity that is packing a creative punch. Christchurch’s residential space too is experiencing somewhat of an architectural renaissance, with the emerging homes putting their best foot forward. The New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) honours the best of this new architecture across each of the organisation’s eight regional branches. wo years since the Health and Safety legislation changed, what have we achieved? In short, quite a lot! In 2012 the Government set a target of a 25 percent reduction in work related deaths and injuries by 2020. According to Statistics NZ, deaths and serious non-fatal injuries are both below the target set by the Government already however, injuries that required more than a week off work are still well above the 2020 target, though also trending down. Statistics are all well and good, but what do they really tell us? I think the real story is the change in culture across workplaces; businesses and individuals have moved away from a compliance focused approach, to a morally ‘it’s the right thing to do’ attitude. There are undoubtedly areas that need to improve, but it is heartening to see an increase in individuals and organisations participating in health and safety training. We’re seeing individuals choosing to attend training, rather than being sent, with this increased willingness to participate from the shop floor up behind the movement. WorkSafe commissioned a three-year survey (2014-2016) to analyse the balance in attitude and behaviours between workers and employers around health and safety. Interestingly, employers showed a more optimistic view of the state of health and safety within their organisation. One way to close this gap is to ensure employers talk to their people at the coalface. The enthusiasm for health and safety is there; it needs to be harnessed and supported if we are to continue to make our workplaces safer.

ou may notice a change in the Christchurch skyline this month with the first of the steel trusses being placed to support the roof of the Convention Centre. These first trusses span 50 metres and sit over the 1400-person auditorium. They give you the first real opportunity to gain some appreciation of the scale of the facility, which occupies two city blocks. In total around 4500 tonnes of primary and secondary steel will be required for the building. About a third of the facility’s 25000m3 of concrete has now been poured, with work on the foundation of the 3600m2 multi-use exhibition hall currently underway. Concrete pumps have also been hard at work on the walls, which are being poured in place rather than being trucked in as the more conventional precast panels. This is because supporting the roof over these large open spaces and achieving the appropriate earthquake resilience requires walls around half a metre think. As a result, it would very difficult to truck in precast panels this thick and heavy. A great place to watch ‘François’ the French tower crane and the German crawler crane ‘Helping Hans’ go about their work on the Convention Centre is Victoria Square. When the facility opens in 2020 it will be the other way around, with the Convention Centre’s meeting rooms on Armagh Street offering impressive views of the historic statues, garden beds and Bowker Fountain in the Square. But for now, just keep looking up.

or the past two years I have been Branch Chair of the NZ Institute of Architects here in Canterbury, leading the committee through a number of programmes and events that have increased public awareness of the practice of architecture. Last week I stepped aside for a new Chair – Mike Callaghan – to lead further changes and improvements over the next two years. It is vitally important that the work of architects is understood in all its complexity and richness, and not judged solely on the resulting buildings. And it is important that buildings are understood not just as objects we walk or drive past, but things we inhabit and experience in all sorts of ways. Buildings are ‘mini-worlds’ and we are the ‘life-form’ they support and interact with. So to encourage the public to engage with buildings they might not normally engage with is of vital importance for the profession. Ways of doing this will be what drives The Festival of Architecture in September this year. Not only will there be open studios and city walks, but backstage passes opening the doors to the backrooms and service spaces of some of the buildings in the city. There will also be lectures and presentations showcasing future work coming up in the city, and also talks and discussions around the buildings we have and the buildings we’ve lost. And these discussions will be extended into the virtual arena, through on-line engagement with community groups and other professional bodies.

or the past 14 months, identifying and assessing potential land uses in the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor has been a significant part of Regenerate Christchurch’s work to develop a regeneration plan for the area. The transformational opportunity it represents, as well as the local and national benefits, cannot be underestimated and it has been critical that we ensure our decision-making is informed, consistent and accountable. While an independent community needs survey, carried out by Nielsen, identified a strong community interest in the corridor’s water quality, research findings on their own do not provide a comprehensive mechanism for testing all ideas. Therefore, at Regenerate Christchurch, our assessment of potential land use combinations has included considering how these options might support safe, strong, healthy and connected communities, provide increased recreation and leisure activities, restore native habitat, create sustainable economic activity, attract visitors, provide opportunities to learn from the natural environment and address the challenges of climate change. We have also assessed the potential land use combinations for their feasibility and how they might provide low and no-cost activities for all ages and abilities, and improve connections between central and east Christchurch. The Red Zone Futures exhibition, which will run for five weeks from 26 May at 99 Cashel Mall – with parallel mobile and online exhibitions – will demonstrate the transformational opportunities within the river corridor. Opportunities that will deliver significant benefits for us here in Christchurch, as well as people around New Zealand and around the world.

’m often asked about the new stadium and, although this is a complex subject, my answer is simple. Time is money. We are grateful for the temporary stadium and what it once represented, but extending its life is a growing concern. Another is the escalating cost of delaying construction of a replacement home for Lancaster Park. The business case for a new stadium needs to consider affordability of the build and the affordability of operating it for 50 years. Rugby is in our DNA; as a region we lead the world in producing world class players and teams, but that doesn’t mean we can demand a new stadium. We respect there have been higher priorities over the past seven years, but time is now the greatest risk. Rugby is just one of many tenants who could utilise a multipurpose stadium; we support the decision to fast-track this project and hope to be offered a seat at the table when a final decision is made. The debate appears to be focused on whether (or weather) we need a roof? We need to shift the conversation around the economic benefit to our city, but just as importantly the benefit to our people. In other words: Wellbeing Economics. Wellbeing Economics is about acknowledging the significant role sport and recreation plays in the community, in the development of our values and character, and in defining who we are and how we live our lives. The decision to build the Metro Sports Facility is a strong example of this, and just reward for all the sports codes in Canterbury. Christchurch has always been an aspirational city, and I’m of the view that both facilities will inspire our kids to dream big.

or seven years, a generation of young Cantabrians has had to make do without important sporting facilities. These were meant to be provided by early 2016 in the Metro Sports Facility, a proposed world class sporting facility. When this Government came to office, all this had come to was an empty lot. Beset by a $75 million budget blowout, the project was stalled with no realistic plan for completion. Likewise, there had been no real progress on plans or budgets for a stadium for the city to replace the one lost in the earthquake. This wasn’t a scenario we were willing to let continue. Over the last few months the Crown has worked closely with Christchurch City Council, Sport Canterbury and the sporting codes themselves to get both facilities back on track. Together, we have completed the detailed design of the Metro Sports Facility. Through a combination of changes to the procurement approach and final design, the estimated cost of the project was reduced by more than $50 million. This long-awaited facility is on track to open by the end of 2021. Likewise, we’ve worked together to fast-track work on the stadium and work can begin on a detailed business case. The details will be subject to that business case, but we foresee a roofed stadium that will allow the city to host major rugby test matches and other significant sports and entertainment events. Together we’ve been able to get real progress on projects that have been struggling and add a big boost of momentum to the recovery of our central city.

Daughter Karen and son Craig talk of how thankful and contented their dad has made many older Cantabrians. Prospective tenants of their one and two-bed units are eligible if they’re over 60, have less than $25,000 to call on and experience genuine housing need. Once there, they can relax, knowing their comfortable accommodation is secure for life. Often such peace would have been impossible to find. Generally tenants leave only if they require rest-home care. Now numbering 29 units, and in locations including Abberley

Crescent, Barbadoes Street, Hills Road and Trist Place, the Kenneth F. Weaver Trust Inc. homes all boast heat pumps, good insulation and tidy garden surrounds. A green spine extending from the city to sea is poised to set Christchurch apart as a place that is prepared to explore new ways of living with nature – from adaptive housing to sustainable urban agriculture.

alkways and biking tracks, wetland developments and a variety of other public and private land uses are included in a shortlist of potential options for an area of land known as the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor. Formerly Christchurch’s ‘residential red zone’, the 11-kilometre stretch of land is nearly twice the size of New York’s Central Park and four times the size of London’s Hyde Park. Regenerate Christchurch is responsible for developing the regeneration plan for the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor and says a mix of naturally-occurring and new activities has potential to attract up to a million unique visitors a year. A “green spine” will extend along the river, up to 150 metres wide on each side, with large areas of ecological restoration, wetlands and community spaces. Elsewhere, there will be three significant areas suitable for a variety of potential public and private land uses reflecting themes of food and culture, experiencing nature and activity and play. “These will create opportunities for school children and researchers to learn about the natural environment to better understand the challenges and opportunities within a truly living laboratory,” Regenerate Christchurch Chief Executive Ivan Iafeta says. Regenerate Christchurch has developed a refined shortlist that will feature in an upcoming public exhibition. Ivan says implementation of the plan is likely to be the beginning of a 30-year intergenerational programme of work.

rue to its name, CoLab collaborated on design with Aaron Jones of Urban Function Architecture on this authentically community-driven and focussed scheme. The club was built purely with fundraising and donations, with the building industry, the community and the council working together to realise the dream. “It has been a wonderful project and process to be involved with, an extremely successful community project,” says Colab’s Tobin Smith. Architect Blair Paterson together with Tobin had a unique brief for this building – the location: isolated, the risks: weather, tide and vandalism, the needs: utilitarian, the budget: lean, yet the want was something exceptionally unique.

The result is stunning; simple but interesting; elegant but very, very hardy. The materials are robust and fit the tight budget – which means locally available. The ground floor is concrete block “to account for the fact that the sand dunes are likely to encroach on the site at some point”. The upper levels are 28mm thick Siberian Larch which can handle the blast of winddriven sand, and whose colour will dilute into silver over time, blending with the thousand shades of grey evident on so many days in the land of the long white cloud. The 900 square metre building is actually three wings. The tower contains the control and first aid stations, positioned on the path from the car park to the beach. An external walkway links the next block housing the clubroom and bar plus the replacement Spencerville Community Hall above, with gear storage. Incorporating the hall extends the use of the building from seasonal to year-round. Views and deck are fully glazed east and completely opening to the west. The suite is completed with the third wing hosting changing and bathrooms, offices and gym. Architect Blair Paterson says, “We would love to be involved in more community projects where we can because while our work is nationwide, Christchurch is our home.”

Bushnell Builders was selected as the main contractor, getting the project across the board with a limited budget through strong buy-in from subcontractors and suppliers. “The construction for this iconic building was a true team effort,” Bushnell Builders Project Manager Brad Austin says. “The generosity of subcontractors and suppliers who supported this project requires special mention.” Bushnell Builders supported this project both in light of the importance of surf lifesaving in the area and supporting the local community. The company prides itself on delivering projects of a high standard while collaborating with clients, consultants, subcontractors and other stakeholders to ensure projects are a successful and enjoyable process. The Spencer Park Surf Life Saving Club building demonstrates the success of this approach and Bushnell Builders congratulates CoLab on the 2018 NZIA nomination and for the success of the project. “As the Larch cladding fades, it will blend with the landscape and the views from the building will add to the grandeur of this iconic building,” Brad says. “The Spencer Park Surf Life Saving Club is a project that we are very proud of and we believe that as a team we have left a great legacy for the club and community.”

CONSTRUCTION Handsome new commercial build Riverlands House is anchored on the corner of Victoria and Kilmore Streets, with prow pointed like an ocean liner toward the Port Hills. It is a striking addition to this prominent corner and shortlisted for the Commercial Category of the New Zealand Institute of Architecture (NZIA) Canterbury awards. The original building sat back on the site, but new city rules enabled the building to come forward to directly interface with the corner.

hris Dopheide, Architect at Warren and Mahoney Architects, says the building is a strong example of how to make the best use of a smaller inner-city site, with hospitality at ground floor level, offices in mid-levels and topped off with apartments, to provide living/ working units. Chris says the owner was keen on low maintenance: the external materials are a GRC concrete panel system on the Kilmore Street façade which is lightweight and efficient to construct and maintain. The Victoria Street frontage is faced with striking mesh-pattern panels to control the glare from morning sunlight streaming into the office areas. The top floor apartment is clad in Euroline Seamlock, again a practical, hardy, modular system that can be readily adapted. Lead contractor for the project was South Island owned and operated ABL Construction (Amalgamated Builders Ltd) and General Manager Canterbury Michael Johnson says the synergies between the two multiaward-winning firms made their involvement a no-brainer. “It’s been an absolute pleasure

working with Warren and Mahoney, especially on such a high-quality project,” he says. “It was a very collaborative environment, with both companies focused on meeting the highest standards.” Established in 1961, ABL has achieved some of the highest accolades in the commercial contracting sector, including the New Zealand Commercial Projects Platinum Award – bestowed only on those who have won five or more national titles. The ABL team has won national awards across multiple categories including high end commercial projects, working with some of the country’s top architects. “ABL has been around for 55 years now and during that time, we’ve been focused on open and transparent communication, working closely with the architect and client to ensure we’re delivering the highest quality iteration of exactly what they want. “The end product speaks of Warren and Mahoney’s professional capabilities. TALENT FOR TOWNHOUSE TYPOLOGY

The Canterbury earthquakes signified a nor’wester-worthy gust of wind to the burnished flame of the ‘Christchurch Style’ of architecture, snuffing out much of that era’s celebrated oeuvre. Fortunately, Tobin Smith and Blair Paterson, of CoLab Architecture are tending the flicker that remains, providing oxygen to the essence of those mid-century ideas and fuelling their evolution to relevance for this century.

he Dorset Street Townhouses are a case in point. Located in an architecturally important area of the city where streets run rib-form from Hagley Park to the city, the three standalone highly-specified townhouses replace a monolithic art deco block of four flats. The area’s rich grain of townhouse typologies inspired the gable rooves and elegantly dense forms clad in dark vertical and horizontal cedar. Proximity to the wooded acres of Hagley Park made the use of timber an obvious choice, with the radiance of oak flooring and joinery complementing the double height living room indoors and wooden louvres tempering the window expanses outside. Cutting Edge Kitchens supplied the joinery and Tobin describes the local firm as “totally fantastic”. Jonathan Parsons of Cutting Edge Kitchens says the companies have had a great working relationship since CoLab’s inception. “We love doing CoLab jobs because they provide all the necessary information and the end product always looks amazing.” All the company’s joinery is custom made and installed by Cutting Edge Kitchens, which understands the look CoLab is going for and recognises the importance of getting the details right. “On any job we’re happy to talk through options and discuss with them available alternatives in style and price,” Jonathan says. Garry Muirson Builders enjoyed shouldering the task of bringing the well-designed but complex project to life. Director Garry Muirson, says that CoLab was great to work with, and this project was fun to do, as it is their first within the ‘four avenues’. “It is rewarding to know that our craftsmanship on this great design will enhance this historic area for years to come.” Getting materials on site was sometimes challenging for Project Manager Jade Muirson and his team, given the narrow but surprisingly busy streets. However, the effort was more than worth it and they are thrilled with how this high-profile build has turned out. Bringing diversity to design postearthquake is important to CoLab and the judges have taken note with this project shortlisted in the Canterbury competition of the NZIA Awards: Multi Residential category. CoLab has been an award-winner each year it has entered; not surprising given its ethos of articulation of local characteristics in form, “don’t force an idea if it doesn’t suit an area”. A world-class venture by Calder Stewart will soon showcase a very unique entertainment and dining experience in the CBD. The Cantabrian icon with the X-factor is on schedule, on budget, for a September 21 launch – in time for school holidays.

first for New Zealand, EntX Entertainment Central will house the state-of-the-art Hoyts complex extending between Tuam and Lichfield Streets, with seven cinemas on the first and second stories, and 18 restaurants and bars on the ground floor of a triple-height, 15 metre high atrium. “After losing Regent on Worcester and the Hoyts 8 complex, Hoyts desired a new inner-city flagship cinema complex. Nothing could compare to this site’s location,” says Calder Stewart’s Project Director Mark Weaver. “It fits well within the overall scheme of the city and will become a popular entertainment destination.” The base build, incorporating a total floor area of 10,500m2, commenced in February

2017, the Hoyts fitout has commenced and the dining tenants’ fitouts will begin in July. Mark says the overall design incorporates a Canterbury landscape theme to create a large glade space and a more enclosed grove area . Supporting columns and the use of recycled timbers reflect the dark forest tree trunks of native Canterbury forest, all weaving amongst an eclectic maze of dining and socialising spaces. “And a spectacular lighting feature will soon be unveiled,” he says. Full-height glass windows link into the outside city vibe, a vibrant vista whilst descending the escalator from Hoyts’ first floor entrance. “The ground floor comprises a dining precinct with 18 restaurants representing all four corners of the globe, seating over 400 people comfortably,” Mark says. “It’s a great

place to meet friends for a meal, watch a movie, or just people watch.” EntX expects to be buzzing day and night with every type of dining environment from sociable bar leaners to soft leather couches by a cosy fireplace; world class – with a regional eclectic feel. The design and build project is headed by Mark, Project Manager Matt Peterson, Constructor Manager Jeff Sutherland and their talented team of carpenters. Outside, the undulating canopy reflects the contours of the Port Hills, harmonising with the roof line of its adjacent neighbour, the Christchurch Bus Exchange. CS Roofing Canterbury was commissioned to supply and install the architectural wall cladding. The premium product, Euro Tray Angle Seam, was used to create the lightweight

Vertical lines varying in subtly changing shades emulate Canterbury plain’s patchwork landscape. “We used our highly skilled, experienced team on time and to budget, using this high-quality product, and met the challenges in the attention to detail required, from measuring and installation to sign off,” says Project Manager Shane Johnstone. “We are proud to be involved with such a prominent Christchurch Landmark.” Hoyts cinemas incorporate more than 940 electric reclining seats with super spacious leg room across seven luxury cinemas – two extreme screens with Dolby surround take cinema to an exhilarating new level. For those special occasions, try one of the intimate 40 seat LUX cinemas

with a restaurant to seat service. AMT Mechanical Services strict acoustic requirements within the cinemas was one challenge, including delivery of conditioned air, to maintain patron comfort levels, while meeting very specific noise criteria. This includes large noise attenuators within duct runs, and developing alternate methods to support ducting around acoustic ceilings and walls. “The project has been fully BIM (3D) modelled via our in-house CAD engineers, allowing us to complete clash-analysis early on,” says Area Manager Chris Green. “To date we’ve commissioned four of the cinemas, and are installing mechanical services for the Hoyts kitchens and hospitality tenancies. Preliminary HVAC design commenced in June 2016. and we’re extremely excited see the project

unfolding and very proud to work with Calder Stewart.” Calder Stewart, predominately involved in industrial design and build development, has its own distribution fleet, access gear, cranes, as well as reinforcing steel, structural steel and concrete panel production plants. This was a cost-effective factor in the $50 million dollar project that utilised 580 tonnes of structural steel. No stranger to central city development and construction, Calder Stewart also built the new Kathmandu and Vodafone buildings. “Our design and build process is very simple. Tell us what you want to achieve, and we’ll work on making it happen,” Mark says. “Our vertical supply chain means efficiencies and savings are passed onto our clients and our timeframes are shorter.” As the company transitions from a regional base to a national focus with inroads into the Auckland and Hamilton markets, the latest outstanding new flagship in Christchurch showcases all that can be possible.
