In my many years as a real estate sales consultant I have never heard so many people talking about the real estate market. It seems to be the hot topic on the news every night and around the dinner table. It seems everyone knows someone who has sold a property at an incredible premium recently or who has been bidding competitively at an auction with five, ten, even fifteen other bidders. If we looked up the term “Hot Market” in the dictionary we would most definitely find a reference to our current conditions. The big question is: just how long can it continue this way and is there the possibility of a market correction? It seems that as a city, Christchurch has only just got off the back of the earthquake’s influence on our housing market. REINZ reports that the median New Zealand house price has more than doubled between 2010 and 2020, and yet

the Christchurch Region has only increased just over 60% in the same period. This could mean that Christchurch is still in catch up mode post-earthquake and reduces the possibility of any downward market correction as a result of the current Government measures. This could all mean continued good news for Christchurch property owners, only time will tell. What we do know for sure is that Christchurch simply has a lack of housing stock. We are still seeing extraordinary results in our auction room and we have substantially more buyers than properties to sell. My team is growing with the addition of Rebecca Gilbert coming on board as a buyers' agent. This means that whatever end of the market you are on, we can be giving you the insightful and researched information you need to make an informed decision. If you are considering a real estate move within the next 1-2 years, it is worth starting your conversation with me now so your property is ready to go when the timing is right.

Lighting the way this month Contemporary art space The Physics Room launches its new exhibition from June 10 through to July 25. The ‘Light enough to read by’ exhibition emerged from discussions around the return of The Physics Room’s library into the gallery and to public access. Metropol looks at how the exhibition came about.

or the last three years, since the shift to its current site in the Registry Additions Building, much of the library has sat in boxes. The specific needs of this shift — sufficient and natural light, space for reading, listening, and resting — offered a script for gallery staff to work within the development of the new exhibition. Underpinning the project was the idea of the exhibition itself as a form of publication, and ‘text’ as something social, material, and lived, subject to conditions of light and weather. Works by Fiona Connor, Lucy Skaer, Rachel Shearer and Cathy Livermore open out from these ideas, transforming the

gallery. A metal hare runs, runs, low to the ground, across the wood floor; daylight comes in again and the workshop doorway is open; the gallery breathes like a lung with the names of Waitaha’s winds. Each of these works rely on dynamic relationships: with grammar and syntax, ko nga hau me nga wai (winds and waters), architecture and light, positive and negative, chase and flight, oxygen and lungs, reader and listener, fabricator and artist, correspondent and recipient, sequence and rest. While each relates to narrative, none of the works rely on writing itself. A current of questions runs through the

exhibition instead. If written words are not the dominant vehicle for information, what other material languages, voices, histories, and relationships can be held in the gallery space? How might the site generate alternative forms of ‘reading’, not contingent on words on a page, rather on conditions including light, relationships, oral and material narratives? The works might be received as a series of speculative responses to these questions. Light enough to read by is curated by Abby Cunnane, Michelle Wang and Hamish Peterson, and was made possible through the support of the Jan Warburton Trust.

A refreshing drink Popular Australia pop rock group Lime Cordiale is set to hit the stage in Christchurch July 19. Formed in 2009, the band consists of brothers Oli and Louis Leimbach, with various touring members.

fter an explosive 12 months, Lime Cordiale will play its latest album live in New Zealand for its 14 Steps to A Better You tour, across four cities. The New Zealand leg of the tour kicks off in Dunedin on Friday, July 16, then heads to Wellington, Christchurch and lastly Auckland. Supporting the group will be Sydney indie triple j faves, the three-piece Le Shiv. Lime Cordiale notched up a successful 2020 with the release of its sophomore album, 14 Steps to A Better You, which topped the Aussie Album Chart and saw it receive eight ARIA nominations. Always high octane, front man Louis is the ultimate showman, as the brothers’ distinctive vocal and on-stage charisma sets the ultimate party vibe.

The band last played in Aotearoa towards the end of 2019 for the Robbery tour and its live performance garnered rave reviews, being described by some as “the stuff of legend”. “Overseas touring, are you kidding me? Says Oli. “We’ve been waiting a year and a half to get over there and now it’s finally happening. “New Zealand is just the best place to tour. Beautiful country and the driest humour.” In 2020, Lime Cordiale’s hit singles Robbery and Temper Temper gained platinum accreditation, and over the past 18 months the band have accrued an additional seven gold singles. Add to those 1.5 million monthly listeners and upwards of 217 million streams on Spotify, close to 20 million Apple Music streams and YouTube views exceeding 13 million, the band is on a fast rise.

Mental health is a huge issue in New Zealand currently with calls for more funding, and more understanding of a problem that affects young and old, male and female alike. One man with personal experience is author and psychologist Paul Wood.

t 18, he was in prison and his life was completely off the rails. Now, as a Doctor of Psychology Paul uses his subsequent journey from delinquent to doctor to illustrate the process of transformational change and how people can become the best possible versions of themselves. Also, a motivational speaker, leadership and personal development specialist, husband and father, Paul has just published his second book Mental Fitness, following on from an initial bestseller, How to Escape from Prison (2019). In his latest book, Paul coaches readers about how to become both mentally fitter for the future and how to be better at managing the capacity that they have to deal with the challenges they encounter. “Mental fitness combines the mental toughness needed to remain effective when emotions are running high, and the resilience to bounce back and recover when the pressure is off,” he says. “Like physical fitness, it is something we can all proactively build and need to maintain in order to be anywhere near our full potential. Also, like physical fitness, it is normal to struggle and

get fatigued.” In his work today, Paul assists others pursue excellence, have more meaningful lives, and flourish through adversity by enhancing their capacity to cope effectively under stress and recover and grow afterwards. He does this through his deep knowledge of psychology, the insights he gained through his own journey, and his experience of working with elite performers across industries and occupations. Paul wrote about his own journey in the instant bestseller How to Escape from Prison (2019). Resident in Wellington, he contributes regularly to the media and works with several charities that focus on helping young men avoid prison or reintegrate effectively on release. While his own experiences of flourishing through adversity and post-traumatic growth feature, he says it is not just young men at risk. “The techniques and insights in Mental Fitness bring together tens of thousands of hours of experience in helping others build their mental fitness across industries as diverse as technology, government, the defence force, insurance, education and professional sports.”

Modernised Mozart WORDS JESS MURRAY

You wouldn’t think Beyoncé and Mozart had much in common. But when it comes to the Aotearoa adaptation of the Marriage of Figaro, when asked the question ‘who run the world?’ Both answer - girls.

ore than 235 years after its premiere in Vienna, the female-led creative team will put its spin on one of the composer’s most popular operas at three locations around the country. Running from July 8 to 13 at the Isaac Theatre Royal in Christchurch, and the messages presented in the classic, are in fact still relevant today. “Mozart certainly had an interest in the role of women in society, and women drive the narrative of this opera. Ideas about knowledge, reason, liberty, progress, and tolerance are being presented to 21st century audiences in the form of a captivating and richly comic story,” says New Zealand Opera’s General Director Thomas de Mallet Burgess. I hope the opera will be a catalyst for conversation about women directors, designers and conductors in opera.” A conversation that may be well overdue. Don’t miss out on tickets! Few music lovers know that Mozart made several major changes to The Marriage of Figaro, three years after the opera’s first performances. Q: Motel ownership - freehold or lease? A: Right now is a good time to consider purchasing a motel business.

When purchasing a motel business you are normally purchasing a lease, where you will own the business, and a landlord will own the land and buildings (the freehold), which you will lease from them (motel leases are normally up to 35 year terms). You operate the business and then when you decide it is time to move on, the business can be sold on separately. However, there are also opportunities to purchase a freehold going concern (FHGC) – the land, buildings and business, where you own everything. Many people are attracted by the opportunity to purchase motel freehold land and buildings only, receiving a passive return by way of rent from the business owner. This has become an attractive investment option because it is not subject to the same taxes or limitations as residential investment property. We will be happy to discuss motel ownership options with interested parties. Metropol 10 June, 2021 23

affected by cyber security incidents, last year received 7809 cyber security reports affecting New Zealanders, a significant leap from the 4740 reports made in 2019. On average, companies take about 197 days to identify and 69 days to contain a breach. John Williams, chair of NZ Health IT’s special interest digital enablers group, has the following suggestions:

he potential to make a much higher return on your money and to spread your financial risk, to become involved in something you’re passionate about, and to be part of growing the local economy, are all reasons he cites. “Investing your money to buy a business can be a great option and the returns can be several times that of owning an investment property,” says Richard, director of Business for Sale website nzbizbuysell.co.nz. “Personal fulfilment and financial gain are among the attractive benefits of owning a business. And when you sell there is no tax on the intangible asset component. Owning (and potentially running) a business will take some skill and serious effort. It can also be hugely rewarding.” Self-involvement is essential, he believes. “With smaller investments you are likely to be working in the business, and will be busy with operations, sales and marketing, and staff. This then becomes a “job” plus an “investment”. His final piece of advice: “Do your homework and purchase a business that will work well for you. Make sure you understand the numbers and enjoy exploring the possibilities.”

Invest in a business Buying a business is just as good an option as buying property, says business sale specialist Richard O’Brien.

Trailblazing women sought The search for New Zealand’s most empowering, hard-working and inspiring wāhine has begun, with nominations now open for the 2021 Women of Influence Awards.

he awards recognise women who are driving change, excelling in their field and leading by example, from community through to international level. Presented by Stuff and Westpac NZ, the Women of Influence Awards feature 10 categories across business, philanthropy, innovation, diversity and more. This year’s programme includes two new categories: Environment and Primary Industries. Nominations close at midnight on August 16 and will be assessed by a high-calibre judging panel led by former Governor-General Dame Silvia Cartwright, with one new member, tech expert Te Aroha Grace. The winners will be crowned at the annual gala dinner in Auckland on October 21. The popular Women of Influence Speaker Series returns in July and

August. Held in Christchurch (August 12) as well as Tauranga, Auckland and Wellington, the series will give audiences the chance to hear from a range of influential New Zealanders in a relaxed and interactive format. Last year’s Awards winners included well-known New Zealanders such as science communicator Siouxsie Wiles, and international performer and choreographer Parris Goebel. The programme also celebrates the work of grassroots figures such as domestic violence campaigner Jackie Clark (2018 Supreme winner) and environmentalist Annika Andresen (2019 Young Leader winner). The new Environment Award was introduced to recognise women who are fighting climate change or protecting our natural environment. Westpac NZ Chief Executive David McLean says

he is encouraged by the ingenuity of environmental work being undertaken, from a community through to corporate level. “There is extraordinary work happening around New Zealand to create a cleaner and more sustainable environment. This award is about acknowledging the people spearheading this work, and encouraging businesses, communities, and individuals to join us in making bold commitments to a cleaner and healthier New Zealand,” Mr McLean says. A helping hand The children of today are the leaders and future-shapers of tomorrow and giving those in need a helping hand often makes a big difference. One organisation playing a vital role in this area is Christchurch Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS).

acqueline Campbell, philanthropy manager for the group, explains that like most charitable organisations BBBS is reliant on donations and volunteers. Both are important, she says, to help youngsters in need of extra support achieve their goals later in life.

“Growing up I was lucky to have a very supportive family and extended whanau, and that has helped to get me to where I am today,” she says. “Many of the children at BBBS don’t have that level of support and that’s where we come in.” Currently BBBS has a lot of children in

Christchurch waiting for mentors. “We are looking for everyday people to be friends with these youngsters and guide them in life. Professional people, semi-retired people, retirees, all sorts.” Jacqueline says the need is for both female and male mentors. “Someone who has at least an hour a week to have some fun with a young person.” Mentors are carefully vetted and then matched with children and young people. “We want to get to know our mentors really well, so careful and appropriate matching is done,” explains Jacqueline. “This involves interviews, reference checks, police checks, and more to ensure mentors are suitable and that they do have the time to put into helping out.” Mentors are initially sought for children aged from six to 12 years, although BBBS supports the matches it makes up until age 18. “Research says that having an extra role model at that age (six to 12) makes a big difference,” says Jacqueline. “We initially ask for a 12-month commitment, although the average mentor in Christchurch stays for 4.3 years. “The difference you can make with one hour, once a week can impact a lifetime.” Playing sports, hanging out, walks, playing board games, bike rides, crafts and more; how the time is spent is up to the mentor. “Mentoring sessions are a fun, relaxed time when young people and their mentors hang out and build a friendship. It is all about spending one-to-one time together doing things both the big and little enjoy from one to three hours once a week.” To learn more about how you can help, visit the website below.

If glasses are your thing, now is your time to shine, because rather than a few distinct styles emerging as standout trends for 2021 – they’re all in! rom classic designs to the more statement and novelty, glasses designs are emerging in fun and bold styles. Frames are large and small, thin and thick and lenses are colour tinted – meaning there is something for every face shape (and personal preference). Fashion forecasters are noting the re-emergence of larger sportier frames; Think thicker aviator styles with tinted lenses. Retro rounds are having a reboot, ranging from small to larger lenses and

again in all manner of tints. Rectangles are the fashionista frame du jour, the thick frames are acetate and we’re seeing them in those on-trend tonals, pastels, tortoise shell and sleek, classic black. And just like tiny glasses have been the trendsetter’s accessory for the last year or two, supersized frames seem to be setting their place at the style table. Frames are, conveniently, able to be used for both sun and reading lenses,

and the popularity of blue light lenses (to block out the rays from screens which can interfere with our sleep cycles) is also continuing to soar. New Zealand designer Karen Walker’s frames are, as always, a style go-to, and local stores like Matthew’s Eyewear Eyecare, Specsavers and Bailey Nelson have a wide range of styles and choice, along with optometry services to ensure you’re looking out for your eye health, too.

tore manager Liam Strachan says winter 2021 is all about soft, refined layering. “Corduroy is impossible to ignore this season. It’s easily our biggest selling fabric. We have cord blazers, trousers, shirts, vests and casual jackets in every hue imaginable.” And there’s a lot to choose from – soft and chunky or smooth and refined. Liam has his favourites: “The Hastin trousers and Leo jacket in washed cord, definitely. Wear those with a Dstrezzed t-shirt for casual comfort or a Cutler & Co shirt for a slightly dressier approach.” Bright is back. Liam says think burnt orange, forest green, ruby red and caramel. And continuing with the soft theme, he is particularly excited about the new 100 percent merino knitwear range. “These feature an innovative dyeing process that achieves a textural look while keeping an incredibly soft and smooth touch.” Designed here, to be worn here, you can check out the soft and brights at 678 Colombo St, Christchurch or visit the website below.

Which is good, because when it comes to choosing which sleepwear to take to bed, the criteria is clear: comfort, but not at the expense of style. Kathryn Wilson is putting her best foot forward, adorned with a new eco-friendly offering aimed to create a kinder footprint thanks to her eponymous footwear brand. Arriving in store this month, her KIND collection has had a lot of thought put into it, so you can purchase carefree.

Congratulations on the latest collection! Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration and significance behind the design and materials? Thank you! The initial offering of three casual styles has been consciously crafted using Global Recycling Standard certified recycled leather and fly-knit uppers made from recycled plastic bottles. We are excited to be able to offer fashion footwear with a ‘kinder’ footprint through materials, components and the manufacturing methods used.

CIRCULAR TRAINER WHITE 34 10 June, 2021 Metropol

After more than two years in design development, how did you know the collection was ready to go public? We have researched and met with several suppliers of sustainable footwear materials and packaging over the last three to four years at international trade shows and shoe fairs. We wanted to make sure the providers we aligned with were GRS certified, trustworthy and had worked with reputable brands to ensure they were committed to creating a quality product, not ‘green-washing’ and were transparent around their social responsibility and code of ethics. We began development of these styles in November 2019 and have been wear-testing and re-fitting the styles to ensure the materials we have sourced are durable, colourfast, and comfortable before finalising our prototype samples which were sold

to NZ retailers in October 2020. Our wholesale accounts throughout the country were so supportive of this new development and have been as excited as we are to have these styles arrive at stores this month. You’ve started your sustainability journey by announcing a partnership with CarbonClick. What factors led to you joining forces to create a footwear with a kinder footprint? With the release of our KIND collection we made part of the purchase price a $10 donation towards the Kaikoura Project, a local regeneration of native forest and pest control program that would off-set more than 100kg of carbon emissions from each pair sold. We have had awesome support and guidance from our sustainability expert; Vanessa from Unravelled Consultants who specialises in advice for the NZ fashion industry on becoming more sustainable. She has introduced us to suppliers of packaging, materials and manufacturers who are offering climate friendly options.

With the term ‘fast fashion’ being thrown around the industry, what is your opinion on consumption in the fashion world and how we can all aim to be a bit eco-friendlier? We have always believed in designing and creating beautiful, quality footwear that will be durable, timeless and last for many years to come. Nothing makes me happier than hearing from a customer that they have kept a pair of our boots for 10 years and had them re-soled etc to give them a new life, still being their favourite pair, I see that as a great compliment. If we can be encouraging our customers

to buy quality items and look after their footwear using care products to lengthen their lifespan, we have less items going into landfill. We hope our shoes will be loved and shared between mothers and daughters or from friend to friend for years to come, ideally given an extended life by donating to a circular fashion retailer or charity. So, what are the next steps (pun intended) for the Kathryn Wilson brand? We are excited to share our sustainability strategy document online this month and increase our

transparency around our product development, our people behind the brand, our charity alignments in local communities and defining our operational carbon emissions. Our goals for 2021 include auditing our NZ operations, committing to all packaging from all suppliers being 100 percent recyclable in NZ, weighing and collecting all leather off-cuts from manufacturers to be re-purposed, and surveying our tier one suppliers on their practices to understand where we can help to reduce emissions in the supply chain. The name says it all In the past, wearing braces on the teeth was a daunting prospect, and achieving the desired outcome could take a long time. Fortunately for us, Bradley Wood Dentists offers patients the Fastbraces system, and true to its name, it’s a gamechanger for those requiring braces.

he average treatment with standard issue braces lasts two years, and many people have their braces even longer. With Fastbraces, some patients have completed their orthodontic care in as little as 20 weeks. With traditional braces, teeth are moved in stages, and each stage takes time to complete, but with Fastbraces, the crowns and roots can be moved at the same time, saving patients’ time and money. Another point of difference is their special triangular brackets. This affects the forces exerted by the arch-wire, as well as using the flexibility of the wire. Dentist Anthony Wood says the revolutionary system also allows for far fewer extractions. “We seldom do extractions. In the last five years, we’ve done only three to four [extractions].” Over 50 percent of the business’ patients accessing Fastbraces are in the 30-plusyears bracket, which proves that no matter what age we are, we all just want to smile with confidence. Pain being a pain Have you ever suffered an injury or pain that felt like it was never going to get better? Do you remember feeling how hard life became? It wasn’t just the pain. it was the energy it took to move, the loss of self-esteem and the sense of sadness that you could no longer do what you love.

or the one in six New Zealanders that suffer “persistent pain”, this is their daily reality. The pain may have started from a back injury or be secondary to “wear and tear” in joints. Or perhaps it is due to a condition such as fibromyalgia. Whatever the cause, the experience is similar. Movement, and therefore life, becomes more difficult. Managing daily pain can be a challenge, but we now know a lot more about what

helps. “The one consistent finding in all the research is that movement is essential”, says Cath Julius, Clinical Director at Freedom Health. “Not only does movement help keep joints mobile and muscles strong, but movement also gives us a sense of freedom and confidence in our bodies that no prescription pill will ever provide.” “That’s where a qualified therapist is essential,” says Cath. “Physiotherapists are

experts in both injury and movement. They can help you discover movement that is supportive and helpful for your body. Using equipment such as the Pilates equipment to give your body the support it requires so that it can move with freedom can be revolutionary for people with pain.” Do you want to add more movement in your life, but need some support? ragranzi Artisan Perfume Studio retails not only a unique range of fine fragrances for men and women, but also offers clients a world-leading design system that enables them to create their own perfumes from a set of 24 fragrance components in the studio. Group bookings and perfumer-led design parties for special events are also on offer. Commencing in June, perfumer Conan Fee and product formulator Stacey Fraser will be running informational and hands-on practical evening workshops on the third Tuesday of each month for clients to design and make their own particular and preferred fragrance types, such as chypre, oriental, fougere and cologne, as well as personal care products, including moisturisers, room sprays, body lotions, solid perfumes and diffusers. This is a wonderful experience that doesn’t come along every day, so to ensure not missing out, sign up online for the June workshop and learn all about the subtleties of creating rose fragrances, body oils and facial serums. Fragranzi is located at The Arts Centre, Old Boys’ High Building, 28 Worcester Boulevard, Christchurch, or visit the website below. www.fragranzi.co.nz

When it comes to embracing the grey, there really is something for everyone, it’s a natural process but it does not have to be a gruelling one. When teamed with a precision cut, the result is transformative explains V for Hair and Beauty Master Stylist Vicki Ogden-O’Fee.

A girl’s best friend A 59.60-carat pink diamond (the Pink Star) last month fetched a world record $71.2 million. Pink may not be your colour choice, but if you’re looking for diamonds there are plenty out there in all sorts of colours. Here are some tips from Metropol.

iamonds are still the first choice for many engagement, wedding and eternity rings along with necklaces, earrings and most other jewellery. They come in all shapes, sizes and many colours including the traditional sparkling white. During the last 10 years or so, coloured or fancy diamonds have become increasingly sought after. Think champagne-coloured, yellow, blue, green and purple even. And with synthetic diamonds also now readily available and many people unable to tell the difference, the colour range is every shade of the rainbow and many spectrums in between too. Stick to the four Cs when

choosing your diamond and you will not go wrong. Cut, colour, clarity and carat weight will guide you through making your choice. The cut is a key factor in a diamond’s appearance, adding to its brilliance and sparkle. Diamond weights are expressed in carats. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Colour is measured in alphabetical order beginning with D and descending to Z, where more colour is present. Fancy coloured diamonds are an exception to the rule because they are rare. All diamonds contain imperfections, most of which are too small to be seen by the unaided eye. The fewer noticeable flaws, the higher the value and clarity.

ust because you have silver hair coming in and you want to go grey gracefully doesn’t mean it has to be a silver colour,” she says. “We help you discover if you are warm or cool based on hair, skin and eyes, and from there we help you decide the best look for you.” While those with a warm base suit silver hair with soft champagne, sandy iris, strawberry beige, or translucent butterscotch tones, those with a cool base suit silver dove, champagne lilac or platinum iris. “Getting your colour undertone is so important and when this is done right it gives your face an instant brightening, lift and can take years off,” Vicki says. “Get it wrong and you will feel drab and look drained and older… consultation is key!”

Something for all Winter can take its toll on skin and general health, so it is an ideal time to research a boost, which is where Kiwi Health 2020 Ltd comes into play. Its website is chock full of vitamin and supplement suggestions, aimed at improving all manner of things from skin tone and elasticity to weight management, joint support and, specifically for men, libido, stamina and erectile function.

pple cider vinegar is a popular health food which Kiwi Health owner Karl Petersen says is often used for weight management, and for its anti-arthritis and diabetes benefits. Keto powder is another supplement that Karl advocates using for weight management. “It promotes the body to enter ketosis, which is when the body utilises fat for fuel, as opposed to carbohydrates. If your body is burning fat, you will lose weight.” He says keto powder is also used for improved mental clarity, energy, better digestion, and sleep. Another supplement on his winter suggestion list is Collagen C, which he says can support skin, nail, hair, bone, and tendon health. For these and other supplements, check out the website below. Orders are shipped daily Monday to Friday for New Zealand delivery the next business day. www.herbalbona.co.nz

Physio on the move On the Go Physio has provided physiotherapy services to a very special group of people – older adults – for 13 years. “I’ve always loved working with this patient group; many changes that come with aging aren’t inevitable. A proper assessment, the right shoes, exercise and nutrition can give people back independence, energy and quality of life” says director Jessie Snowdon.

nitially a fully home-based service, Jessie started small to fill a gap between what clients sought and what was publicly available. This expanded quickly with a combination of private clients living at home, and aged-care facilities keen to utilise her skills. The team now includes seven physiotherapists, two physiotherapy assistants, an office manager, and recently, an occupational therapist and dietitian. Working with older adults takes a vast knowledge as people can present with the full range of health and rehabilitation needs. “My fabulous team might be working with someone who has had a stroke but also has COPD, arthritis and diabetes. And maybe fractured their hip the year before!” says Jessie. A typical physiotherapy assessment takes at least an hour and follow-up sessions are 45 minutes. “We are often working on a range of activities from strengthening, balance work and endurance, as well as specific neurological input for some people.” As people improve, they can join one of the speciality groups at On the Go Physio’s new home – The Older Adults Health Collective at 47 Whiteleigh Ave. “We now have a small gym space and are offering classes of up to eight people with specific conditions such a stroke, Parkinson’s, Polio, vascular

...we are now offering a service for people identified as frail, or heading towards frailty, who would like to reverse this

conditions and strength and balance,” says Jessie. A new venture, the Older Adults Health Collective houses other health professionals with a passion for working with older adults. “We work closely and collaboratively with our dietician, speech language therapist, massage therapist, and hand therapy colleagues. Clients can access a full range of services without long waiting times or having to repeat their story.” One collaboration is an assessment service for people suffering frailty, started in response to people needing surgery but who weren’t physically strong enough. Jessie says, “Nobody wants to hear themselves described as frail and we are now offering a service for people identified as frail, or heading towards frailty, who would like to reverse this.” The frailty service sees physiotherapist and dietitian collaborate to ensure people have the nutrition they need to build strength. Any issues with managing the eating and swallowing aspect can be immediately referred to the speech language therapy team. “We are so excited about this expansion and serving more people in the later stages of life.” Phone the team on 0800 000 856 or visit the website below. www.onthegophysio.co.nz Metropol 10 June, 2021 45

Interesting oats WORDS MORGAN TAIT

A staple of winter breakfasts and brunches, oats are a warming, filling and nutritious way to start your day. But, gone are the days of lumpy, sloppy and bland bowls – instead, oats have rebranded as a delectable and nourishing breakfast blank canvas. We share some simple and favourite flavours to accompany your next bowl.

BEAUTIFUL BASES To craft something scrumptious, start right at the beginning. Mix seeds such as chia and flax, cacao nibs, spices like cinnamon, turmeric and cardamom, or supplements like protein or collagen powder into the oats before cooking. When cooking, use a 1:2 oat to liquid ratio, and try using coconut or another nut milk for a dairy free and flavourful options.

Once cooked, take your oats to a new, yet still nutritious, level by adding your favourite fruit. Fresh fruits such as banana, berries, mango, kiwifruit and grated apple are excellent options, but so too are stewed fruits. Defrosted berries, stewed rhubarb and stone fruit, pan fried bananas, or poached apple and pear are a comforting collab.

Top off your creation with the addition of, well, anything really. Yoghurt, cream, custard, coulis and other sauces can be decadent sweet treats, while seeds, shredded coconut, nuts, maple syrup, goji berries and currants continue the wholesome theme. Muesli, crumble or crushed cookies add a new textured element, and sprinkle of chocolate never goes astray.

Apple & feijoa crumble Serves 4

25 to 30 minutes

Grandma’s recipe for traditional apple crumble can be given a new twist by adding feijoas or other fruit to the mix.

Ingredients 4 apples, peeled and sliced 8 medium feijoas, peeled and sliced or pulped 1 cup water ½ cup lemon juice 3 tbsp brown sugar Pinch of salt Crumble ½ cup standard grade flour ½ cup rolled oats ½ cup ground almonds ½ cup brown sugar 1 tsp cinnamon 150g softened butter

Method Preheat oven to 180°C. Put apple slices into a medium-sized saucepan, add water, lemon juice, sugar and salt, and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer until apple is cooked, but firm. Add feijoa slices or pulp, stir. Cover and cook for two minutes until lightly poached. Strain the fruit and transfer to a greased ovenproof dish. Mix the dry crumble ingredients in a bowl, then rub in the butter until the mixture forms clumps. Sprinkle crumble over the top of the fruit then bake in a preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until the juices start to bubble up through the crumble.

olour too can add warmth to a room, and blue is a classic hue for doing this. From deep midnight blues to baby hues, it’s always a popular colour choice. As a colour, blue both contrasts and complements most other colours. Pillows are an easy way to add blue to a room’s colour palette, but rememeber too that not all

pillows are created equal. Down pillows, for instance, are made from the soft fibres close to the skin of a goose, duck, or swan. Then there are those made from feathers, cotton, latex, memory foam, and bamboo. Add to the ambience with colour coordinated fur or natural wool throws, maybe a few scatter cushions, and soft lighting.

Smooth sailing Everyone needs a place to call their own, including adults. Just a having a corner of a shared bedroom or lounge to read and relax when you need some time out can be of major benefits to your mental health and make sure your relationships continue to be smooth sailing.

PAINT: Walls in Resene Tangaroa, and Resene Indian Ink; floor in Resene Colorwood Mid Greywash; rope table in Resene Blanc; life preserver wreath in Resene Raging Bull.

FURNISHINGS: Armchair, cushion, shag rug and seagrass pouf all from Nood; mirror and brass shell planter from H&M Home; all other accessories are stylist’s own. Styling Laura Lynn Johnston / Photography Bryce Carleton

f you have a particular interest – such as sailing, for instance – it can be a great starting point for gathering different things as part of a cohesive theme. Your aim should always be to try and decorate with things that you really love; whether it is objects that have special meaning to you, or simple things you find particularly pleasing to look at. If the colour is all wrong, it is a quick and easy fix with a fresh lick of paint in a hue that better coordinates. In this lounge, even the accessories have been painted in nautically inspired shades. Creating the right mood is another key

component in a relaxing space, and colour plays a very important role in that. Dark, rich wall and ceiling colours can be easier on the eyes than brights or whites and can send the brain a psychological message, which, in turn, has a physiological effect that tells your body, ‘when you’re in this room, it’s time to wind down.’ This lounge features two similarly inky blue hues: Resene Tangaroa on the tongue-andgroove panelled wall and Resene Indian Ink on the adjacent walls. Together, they create a cocooning effect while their subtle differences in hue and texture add interest. Part of getting the mood right in this

lounge is making sure that its dark walls are also balanced, which is achieved through the timber flooring finished in Resene Colorwood Mid Greywash. The rope side table creates further lightness through its sharp contrast with the wall colours while the rich golden hue of the velvet statement armchair acts as a focal point, inviting you to get cosy and stay awhile. Other colours that look great with inky blue hues like Resene Indian Ink are pale greens like Resene Aspiring, russet browns like Resene Felix and steeped beiges like Resene Tea.

eeping warm is also about being cosy; snuggled up in front of the fire with lush fur throws, soft comfy cushions and couches, ambient lighting and a good book or glass of wine. Many contemporary fireplaces are inspired by European or British designs with modern features such as linear flames that flicker in unison, unique materials such as black onyx, and panoramic viewing angles. Corner fireplaces, wall inserts and dual room options come in a wide range of contemporary (and more traditional) styles for wood and pellet burners and gas fires. Even when not in use, a fireplace is a focal point in a room, so placement is key to having a wow factor. In some instances, placement such as on a wall at eye level turns a fireplace into a work of art, making it decorative as well as functional.

Modern wood burners are more efficient, eco-friendlier and come in a myriad of styles, sizes and heating capacities.

Most pellet fires look like conventional wood burners. They are available as free-standing and inserts and even a basement-furnace model for central heating.

A versatile option, heat pumps are efficient, affordable, quickly installed and easy to operate.

Radiators are an old form of heating that has been revived and more efficiently. An electric option is available too.

Creating home playgrounds A great outdoor play area encourages the growth of young minds.

arl Gildea of Willow Landscapes has drawn creative inspiration from his own young family, to install

adventure into Kiwi backyards. Lockdowns, logistics and working remotely has sparked a trend for home playgrounds,

where it’s easy to oversee the kids having the time of their lives. Carl digs a challenge,

especially going way out with sandpits, creating real environments like getting muddy amongst the Tonka trucks. Hill sections are even a palatte for play for Carl, who can transform any slope. He says upcycling can be more fun than new - from pipes to tyres, for swinging, crawling and climbing. He finds children love inventing and planning with him, and really engage in the finished project. This English masonry expert carved out his career repaving the cobblestones of London, but calls Canterbury his home, who can integrate the inbuilt barbie area with the playground. Landscaped spa pool areas are also making a family splash. Time just flies when you’re having fun, but Carl can repurpose the sandpit to a trampoline pad, or the Wendy house into a teenage she-shed. And always securing safety with adventure, his team are on the pulse with regulations and advice. MEET THE DEVELOPERS want to call one of our developments home.” While Growcott Freer Property was officially established in 2018, it had been growing silently for years prior. Nicholas, a builder with over a decade of experience under his belt, building arguably some of Christchurch’s top homes, and Isaac, an electrician, also with over 10 years’ experience working in a large Christchurch company, had completed many residential projects outside of their 40-hour working weeks. This experience taught them hard work and allowed them some of the capital to create what is now Growcott Freer Property. Current projects include three city developments of 35 townhouses which are all well under way. “All of the townhouses sold out as soon as they

irectors Nicholas Growcott and Isaac Freer personally oversee every project, partnering with some of the biggest names in the industry to ensure the design, craftsmanship, liveability and overall building experience is perfect from conception to completion. What makes Growcott Freer Property stand out from the crowd? Isaac explains: “We work very closely with our designer,

Sam Connell of Connell Architecture. His creative eye produces such a high-end design product at an extremely completive price point for our clients.” He adds that a key element is obviously the architectural design of the company’s town houses and the strong emphasis on liveability, such as garaging and off-street parking, high spec finishes in the interior spaces etc. “It’s these little things that really make you

were released to the market, a great testament to the level of design and price point which is so important to us,” says Nicholas. Another development of 19 townhouses will hit the market in July with construction to start during the last quarter of 2021. “We have no doubt our clients are going to love these!” he adds. A strong team ethos is the essence of Growcott Freer as a company and what sets it above the rest. Nicholas and Isaac are backed up by their outstanding Site Manager Sam Johnston. Their trade backgrounds mean they have forged lengthy personal and professional relationships with their contractors, some, such as Alex from YP Plumbing, dating back 20 years. “These relationships have allowed us to rely on contractors to meet, and exceed deadlines and deliver the absolute best product or service for our developments,” says Nicholas. “You can keep an eye on what we are doing on Instagram or our website.” www.growcottfreerproperty.co.nz.

Shelve it Making the best use of space available in a home, bach or office often means shelving. If you’re looking for inspiration, check out these ideas from Metropol.

owadays shelves might be singles, doubles or triples, built-ins or exposed, stand alone or part of a cabinet. Choice is dependent on the style of the home or office, the amount of space and the budget. Whether you want floating shelves, rope shelves, or a-frame ones, you will find something out there to suit, or being a nation of DIYers you can make it yourself. Another option is to visit your favourite joiner and order bespoke shelving. Tiny homes are becoming more popular and with them the need for creative storage and shelving. The same applies to small apartments and kitchens. Pull-out, pull-up or pull-down storage helps gain extra space. Storage experts Blum NZ recommend using narrow cabinets when planning layouts for these as they can turn tiny spaces into valuable

storage. Some are double sided to provide even more space plus ease of accessibility, while others fit neatly into cupboards, fireplace mantles and skirting boards, unnoticed until they’re needed. Some beds come with drawers underneath for storage and some sofas pull out to reveal extra space. That said, bookcases and ornamental shelving remain a favourite. Back to beds and some even come with pullout storage shelves in the headboard. Kitchens are one area of the house where all manner of corners can provide extra storage with creative fittings such as lazy Susan-style trays and pull-out racks. Bespoke pantries are often designed with uber space and there is always a need for it. Have you ever heard anyone complain about having too much storage space?

heir combined previous experience of 11 years in design encouraged them to forge a new direction, in designing with consciousness and integrity. Deià inclines to the classic aesthetic with a contemporary twist, complemented by the use of natural colours and materials. This can be seen in its commercial and residential projects. “Trends come and go quickly. We believe timeless design suppresses the urge for constant change, and as a result, reduces our environmental footprint by preventing materials and products being discarded too often. We are committed to bringing clientele a beautiful

Award-winning joinery A true master of wood with a lifetime of creative skill, Murray Hewitt is installing warmth and flair into South Island homes.

rom a Kaikoura kitchen to a West Coast bach, the team at Murray Hewitt Joinery is as adaptable as it is specialised.

Wood combines heart and history. An heirloom oak table with its time-loved patina, was recently repurposed into a

beautiful dresser. “Some Canterbury homesteads have used the farm’s old oak tree or

macrocarpa for their interior and exterior joinery, for example door frames, coloniallook double-hung windows, and solid-wood bifold doors,” Murray says. Kitchens look amazing when functionally combining wood joinery with the likes of laminate and stainless-steel benches – the best of both worlds. “Tying the kitchen to the living area in the same hardwearing American oak gives continuity. We can stain it any colour to perfectly match or contrast throughout the home.” He says walnut with its beautiful grain is also popular. From a wardrobe in gold high-gloss stained solid wood, to an inbuilt entertainment unit that blends with surrounds, it’s a close team’s creative efforts. “Donna Weir, our inhouse designer, shares her wealth of ideas with clients, and Steve who works alongside me shares my passion for timber.” Contact them on (03) 343 0360, email info@mjh.co.nz or visit the website below. www.mhj.co.nz

ames Wightman, Co-Director of Freedom Pools South Island says that now is the time to get your swimming pool project started so that when those hot days arrive, you’ll be ready. Simply start with a chat with him on the phone. James provides an estimate for a basic package, considering access or other issues. If you are serious about getting started, James can meet you onsite to discuss the finer details and come up with a firm costing. After council consent, the installation can be done in as little as a week. “We are a one-stop shop: paving, decorative concrete, decking, pump shed, pool house, and fencing are all part of our service.” The team’s awarding-winning fibreglass pools cover the whole of the South Island. “They are so popular we are searching for distributers in the Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes area and the wider South Island,” says James. “You don’t have to have installed swimming pools before. Landscaping and earth moving are great experience. We started from a farming background.” Find them on the website below or phone (03) 365 3334.

Celebrate freedom this summer Summer can arrive with a bang in the South Island - one evening you’re covering the lemon tree with frost cloth, and the next you’re having a beer at the barbie and admiring the light under the Nor’ West Arch.

Stunning schist design An eye-catching new building has been evolving at stunning Lake Tekapo. Dubbed the “Hocken Motel” this beautiful, natural schist-clad accommodation is the work of Timaru-based architectural design company Draftline.

ompany Principal and lead designer Pat Coll says the developers, Andrew and Grant Hocken “pretty much gave Draftline free rein” to use its experience in the Mackenzie Country and decades of

residential and commercial design experience to create something extra special, befitting of such a quality build platform. The only stipulation being a desire for a somewhat grand reception area and as many

rooms as possible with optimum views. One design challenge to overcome in the project was giving each room a view – but not a view of its neighbour. Draftline avoided this happening

by staggering the main rooms, so they are all facing either the lake or the Tekapo River, with discrete partition walls. Sounds like a dream job, but it is really a testimony to the trust that Draftline builds with its clients. Pat says: “We’ve undertaken many commercial and residential projects for the Hocken’s now, so we know what they like and our working relationship goes back many years.” Give Pat or the team a call to talk about innovative design and project ideas on (03) 688 8455 or visit the website below www.draftline.co.nz

Swimming in success Christchurch’s Apollo Projects have once again proven their expertise when it comes to the design and build of leisure facilities. The team have partnered with the Christchurch City Council to deliver the fantastic Te Pou Toetoe: Linwood Pool.

he stunning $22million sports and aquatic facility is located adjacent to Linwood Park. Its

name was gifted by Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri, reflecting the local environment and the passing

of knowledge from person to person and generation to generation.

The leisure centre includes a 25m lane pool, an accessible friendly family spa pool, a learn-to-swim pool, a toddlers’ splashpad which includes water toys, and the destined-to-be-ahit bombing (manu) pool, which the local kids (big and small) will love! says Apollo Projects’ Business Development Manager Iain Ansell. On the dry side of options are outdoor sports courts – tennis, basketball, and multi-purpose – plus a large community room including a kitchen with a service window for indoor or outdoor access. The sunny area flows out to a large concrete patio with seating and a shade sail blending down into Linwood Park, perfect for family gatherings and community events! Christchurch City Council Senior Project Manager Kent Summerfield says that they are delighted with the way things are coming together on site, and that there is great anticipation within the local area around the imminent opening of this fantastic community asset.

Go hard when it comes to timber Recycled Australian hardwood timbers bring something truly special to a building project. Whether you’re going for a rustic, natural look or something with a dressed finish, the versatility of these hardwoods is impressive, and on display at the LMA Timber showroom in Christchurch.

nd the beauty of these timbers is more than superficial, according to LMA Timber’s managing director Martin Thompson. “We import sustainably-sourced hardwood timbers from Australia’s biggest and most reputable supplier, Kennedy’s.”

Not only is the product eco-friendly, it is incredibly durable and suitable for all kinds of purposes, from cladding (including selected lengths), large structural beams or posts, to decking and flooring. LMA Timber also offers peace of mind around supply with an abundance of milled-to-order stock, despite the shortage of other timber products that New Zealand is experiencing right now. Martin says the hardwoods’ low maintenance, sustainable qualities are very appealing, “It’s a class one timber, with a life-span of over 40-years, compared to other inferior timber cladding options.” LMA Timber is considered to be the largest, most trusted supplier of sustainably-sourced Australian hardwoods in New Zealand. To see the sheer scope of choice, visit its impressive showroom at 281 Dyers Rd, Bromley, call Martin 021 398 800 or visit the website below. www.lmatimber.co.nz

Dryden WoodOil® is a water-repellent, non-filming, timber protector. It is a deeply penetrating oil that utilises an ultraviolet, stable fungicide. Dryden WoodOil’s water repelling properties prevent the absorption of water deep into the timber, reducing excessive warping, cupping, and splitting of timber, thus extending the service life of those timbers. 33 Dryden WoodOil colours available.

Big seven-to-eight-seater luxo SUVs are fast becoming the cash cow of many automotive brands. This is the Palisade, Hyundai’s spearhead at this segment.

he turbo diesel engine in my Limited felt very strong and eager to get going. Keep it between 1600 and 4000rpm, and you make brisk progress despite the girth. The Palisade’s eight-speed auto box on hand sending drive to all four wheels via Hyundai’s proven HTRAC AWD system is very smooth. However, the gear selector buttons on the centre console were not terribly responsive. As far as cabin refinement goes, the Palisade shows just how far Hyundai has come in the last decade. Features like the 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system are easy to use and everything you touch feels akin to some in this segment costing twice the price. The on-board kit is a Palisade triumph too. Heated and ventilated seats, power sunroof, heated steering wheel, wireless charging, Apple carPlay/ Android auto, blind spot collision avoidance assist, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision avoidance, which at speeds of up to 80km/h, will put the brakes on quicker than you could yourself. Though I was not tempted to try it! The rear ‘Captains Chairs’ were another treat, able to recline and move forward and back so one could strike the optimum Captain Kirk pose. The Palisade is probably not the most engaging of drives, but then again it is not meant to be. Off the beaten track, its multi terrain control drive modes sends optimum torque to which ever corner needs it most. It is a great system and a doddle to use. All in all, there is much to like about the new Palisade. The price is up there, but those after a luxurious yet frugal SUV, should definitely keep the brochure on this one.

Size doesn’t matter WORDS NICK HENARE

t’s not often I get taken off guard but my visit to Avon City Ford to pick up the Ford Puma, ST line, had me scratching my head. Sam Baker and I were going over the top things about the vehicle when out came the words: “It’s a one litre, three-cylinder engine…” The silence was deafening. Gone are the thoughts that a mid-range SUV with great interactivity features with an application where you can preheat or cool your car via your phone, your

wireless phone charging in the console storage area, automatic tail gate opening with foot or remote, sports seats and cool metal floor pedals and priced at a good $37,990 plus on roads. Suddenly there’s an elephant in the room. Okay! I decided to pick up a friend drive to Sumner on a beautiful autumn day. A simple heating/cooling system, nice stitching on interior panelling and good storage space/feature. Leather wrapped gear stick and steering wheel,

complete a great looking, simple interior. The exterior was appealing also. So, the big test was how did it perform at 92kW. I dropped my foot straight down from start and it took off, surprisingly well. Open road to 100Km/h and it’s flying along, effortlessly. There you go, technology did the job. I dropped it back with half a tank of gas a week later and walked away thinking for the first time, size really doesn’t matter. Nice one Ford.

It’s not every day Honda gives us a new Jazz. Few cars in this segment are lapped up as much by consumers ever since Honda released the first Jazz almost 20 years ago. For 2021, the Jazz has more tech, a new face, and the addition of electrification.

2021 Honda Jazz Crosstar Price: $30,000/$30,800 two tone Engine: 1.5L DOHC VTEC Petrol Transmission: CVT Auto Power/Torque: 89kW/145Nm Fuel Economy: 5.8L/100km C02 Emissions (g/km): 133 Alloys: 16-inch Cross Design Warranty: Five Years with Unlimited Ks

he range kicks off at $28,000 for the entry level Life and finished at the electric hybrid e: HEV Luxe at $35,000. My test car was the mid-range $30,000 Jazz Crosstar. This middle child is the first Jazz with an urban crossover stance. Honda has raised the ride height by 33mm and additions like roof rails, water resistant upholstery, redesigned steering and a nose which distinctly has a whiff of adventure about it. I also loved the optional two-tone colour scheme. The new interior is spot on. The first things you notice are the two spoke steering wheel, larger windscreen and much thinner a-pillars. A clear digital instrument cluster stares at you and all the switchgears feel solid and well put together. The new nine-inch infotainment screen is a peach too. The 1.5L VTEC petrol engine pulls strongly and despite the raised ride height, you can still carry a decent pace through the bends while remaining relatively planted. All in all, Honda’s new Jazz is an even more tempting proposition.
