Kaikoura For the love of

By Melinda Collins

In a poignant case of paying it forward, teams of Christchurch East residents humbled by the support they received post-February 2011 sprang into action to meet the needs of hundreds of affected people throughout the greater Canterbury district following the Kaikoura quake.

A

nna-Maria Covich and her flatmate Carolyn Hodgen used social media networks to assist with sourcing food supplies, before hooking up with the Eastside: Our Turn To Help Facebook group, which was operating from Bin Inn New Brighton’s back room and adjacent arcade. Anna-Maria had worked in the welfare team for the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) post-February 2011 and was aware that a lot of needs didn’t filter through to official channels. There was also a major disconnect between what she saw first-hand in the East and what she heard through those official channels. Some was deliberate, in that the EOC had to prioritise its early response, but some was caused by making the system too hard to use. Anna-Maria began wondering how to make it easier for those offering and requesting assistance. Her website superhero.geek.nz

is the result, matching up needs with those able to offer assistance. Assistance has included collecting and facilitating the delivery of baking, non-perishable foods and cleaning products; coordinating accommodation requirements for the displaced; finding a massage therapist for a nurse coming to Christchurch for respite, and supporting a family evacuated from Kaikoura when they lost their house before being uprooted again from their temporary lodging in Goose Bay. Anna-Maria is unsure how long the service will be required, but plans to continue for as long as she is able to offer help and others require it. “By the time I needed a break post-2011, most of the offers for free accommodation had dried up and I didn’t qualify for a travel grant. I don’t want anyone affected by this quake in North Canterbury, Kaikoura, or Wellington to be in that same position.”

he Two Gentlemen of Verona shall be performed on the lawn known as the Mound (for verily, dear friends, that is its shape) every evening from 8 – 18 February with 2 pm matinees on both Saturdays. It promises to be a top drawer production from Christchurch’s Top Dog Theatre. Derek Doddington, Top Dog’s Impresario Extraordinaire, shares a little about this upcoming production. “We have the hugely talented Anna Willows directing for us. It’s set in the swinging sixties with stunning black and white sets. This play has got great comedy – a bloke declares his undying love for one girl then goes away and falls for another girl whom his best mate has already fallen for. It’s got cross-dressing, brilliantly farcical timing, a few lessons are learnt along the way, and best of all you get a happy ending. It’s the perfect recipe for a great night’s entertainment!” This year’s Top Dog Theatre production has the added bonus of the beautiful homestead being open. “We’re thrilled about that,” says Derek. “With the homestead back in operation, our surrounding setting is complete,

HUMILITY PERSONIFIED Chart-topping, platinum Kiwi singer-songwriter Benny Tipene is humility personified. A vocal patriot of his childhood stomping ground - Palmerston North - the soundtrack to Benny’s own success story is defined by family and great friendships as well his own unwavering commitment to fulfilling his musical potential.

Ahead of his opening act at The Winery Tour, alongside the equally prodigious talent of Brooke Fraser and Bic Runga, Benny talks to Metropol about the journey. Were you always compelled in the creative direction of music? My first introduction to music was at primary school in the Kapahaka group. I think I learned there how to hold a tune and, looking back, I think that was a beautiful introduction. When I was 16 I rented a “How To Play Piano” book from a mobile library and taught myself how to play. I learnt ‘Let It Be’ by The Beatles for my Grandmother and played it for her just before she passed away. From there stemmed my love for The Beatles, and so I kept on learning their songs. In my last year of High School my friend and I wanted to form a band, but he said that carrying a piano around is too much effort and suggested I learn guitar. I spent a whole summer locked in my room learning to play. We wrote two songs, entered ourselves in Rockquest as ‘The Nerines’, and won future recording artist. For the next threes years we played gigs, wrote and recorded songs and immersed ourselves in the musical community of The Stomach. A couple

16 February 02, 2017 Metropol

of the guys went down to Wellington to study so I bought myself an acoustic guitar and started practising covers and singing more. I took that to cafes and pubs and started making a living off music in Palmerston North. I started writing my own songs and releasing them on Bandcamp under the series ‘Room Demo Live’. I put on shows in peoples flats so I could play and invited other acoustic artists to as well. One day X-Factor came to Palmy and I thought I’d give that a shot, and now here I am. Has the impressive trajectory of your career caught you by surprise at all or did you have set goals in mind on the journey? Since being apart of The Nerines I’d always hoped that I would have a career in music. When the band wasn’t playing as much and I started playing solo I began to set goals of releasing music and playing more. X-Factor became a great platform to help me do this.

When I was 16 I learnt ‘Let It Be’ by The Beatles for my Grandmother and played it for her just before she passed away.

What would you say have been some of the most significant challenges while establishing yourself as an artist? While I can appreciate the place X-Factor has put me in, and the opportunity it has given me to become a recording artist, it has been a challenge to prove myself as a musician and to separate myself from a reality TV show. I think it’s good to acknowledge what the show did for me but I knew going into it that I wouldn’t be able to ride that forever. I couldn’t actually write one song while I was on the show I found it too difficult in the bubble I was living in. When it was all over, I finally went home and wrote for a few months before releasing my EP. You describe playing the guitar and joining a band as being the first time you ‘felt like myself’ – how would you encourage others to find that sense of belonging in an art or hobby or at least a place of being that resonates? Be open to opportunities and be willing to try new things. Spending time on a craft can help you learn a lot about yourself and can become a great way of expressing yourself. For me, the band felt like a family and this really cemented me in my art. Creative communities are important so I encourage people to collaborate with others and have fun. Who have been your greatest sources of inspiration as well as practical support in your career evolution? Definitely my family! My parents have always encouraged my sister and I to pursue anything that makes us happy, so growing up in that environment gave us a lot of opportunities to try new things. The Stomach was a great place of support and inspiration. I watched so many bands there that made me want to be a better musician, and met so many of my friends there - it became a second family. I get a

lot of support and encouragement from my girlfriend. I’ve learnt so much from her, her art practise, and watching her creative process inspires me. All of my flatmates are into different things too - architecture, art, baking bread, working with fabrics. Talking with them and understanding their crafts has helped me appreciate different art forms and they inspire me to keep creating and sharing my own. Seeing them create excites me and motivates me to be as determined as they are. At times I become quite isolated, whether it’s in my head, or in a room playing guitar, and if I didn’t have them to talk to I’d go crazy. Without giving away any trade secrets, what methods do you employ as you make music? Most of my writing is done with a guitar and usually starts with a melody in my head. I definitely do most of my writing at night-time, my brain seems to be more loopy and a little bit more relaxed and that’s when it seems to happen the easiest. I tried doing the 9-5 songwriting thing but found I got nothing done. Playing different instruments can often help me find new melodies or inspire me. I’m not very good at piano but most of the songs on this next album have been crafted on piano. A lot of mistakes happen because my fingers are a little clumsy but some of the mistakes can take the song to a different place. What is your favourite life mantra? You’re a long time dead, so be happy now.

HOLCIM CEMENT PLANT IN RAIN, CAPE FOULWIND 2016

THE NEAR FUTURE

By Kate Pierson

In a case of art imitating life, inquisitive and boundary-pushing creator and curator Hannah Watkinson has turned the lens on herself.

A

chronological expose of her life, Watkinson’s latest exhibition The Near Future has her own evolution under the microscope. The existential examination is by no means a way to address ‘unfinished business’, but rather a retrospective consideration of what has come to pass.

The artist explains, “These photographs are evidence of a tangled tryst. My only familial ties with the West Coast of the South Island are to photographs. In some of these photographs my father stands as a fresh-faced teacher at Runanga and Kumara Schools. In others I’m depicted in holiday snaps as an 18 month old, then later as a sulky teenager, bored about being dragged on yet another cemetery visit with my parents.” Underpinned by a socio-cultural understanding of ‘place’, the photographs are discursive, used to describe the psychological landscape of Watkinson’s native region. She argues there are “invisible structures of economics and politics that define the place’s history. “When Solid Energy went into debt crisis talks in February of 2013, former Prime Minister John Key said that it was ‘very unlikely Solid Energy would be sold in the near future’. Now, in 2016, I have learnt that the ‘near future’ is a concept that occupies the minds of all who live on the West Coast. “I’m compelled to listen to people’s stories, to photograph, and then I return home with a heavy heart, the weight of narratives between my shoulder blades. This project has raised more questions than I will ever have the answers for, but I hope that the photographs I continue to make could inspire in people a sense of awareness in their surroundings.”

ART GALLERY Christchurch

Must Sees

By Céline Gibson

Here in Aotearoa, we can continue to take great pride in the calibre of artists representing us both nationally and internationally. Two artists well worth keeping an eye on are Reuben Paterson and Simon Morris. It would be in every art lover’s interest to check out Te Puna o Waiwhetu Christchurch Art Gallery’s ongoing exhibitions and see for themselves the prodigious talent of these two artists.

R

euben Paterson’s preferred medium is glitter. Step inside the foyer elevator at the Christchurch Art Gallery and wonder at the beauty of his work titled The End. The walls and ceiling have been covered in black velvet like fabric that is sprinkled with glitter. It is Paterson’s first painting inside an elevator.

Simon Morris Yellow Ochre Room 2015. Acrylic paint. Commissioned by Christchurch Art Gallery. Photo: John Collie.

It would be in every art lover’s interest to check out ongoing exhibitions and see for themselves the prodigious talent of these two artists.

Lara Strongman, Senior Curator at Christchurch Art Gallery explains this work further. “For the nine seconds it takes to ride between floors, the sensation is one of travelling through a night sky, studded with stars.” Paterson’s mentor was Darcy Nicholas who told him early in his career not to think of it as glitter but as reflected light. “There are strong concepts of Māoritanga inherent in Paterson’s work,” says Lara, “The sense of where you stand in the world, where you have come from, and where you are going.” Paterson’s comment in 2003 that he had become “well versed in looking up for explanation” seems an apt statement of what inspires and influences this artist. Simon Morris is an abstract artist based in Wellington. Yellow Ochre Room is a massive work painted directly onto the walls of the gallery. It took four weeks to complete. It covers fifty-two metres of wall space and is based on a series of mathematical calculations for diluting paint over nineteen squares. The first square is richly dense in colour, while the final square could be likened to the shade of parchment. “The Yellow Ochre Room is an immersive environment,” says Lara, “It’s a contemplative space in the heart of the gallery in which visitors can take time out to quietly process all that they have seen.” Lara says she was fortunate to see the artist at work. “It was a most interesting experience.” Visit www.christchurchartgallery.org.nz

S

heer looks haven’t hit a lull since they stole the limelight on the world-famous silhouettes of Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian several years back and while we’ve been unfortunately privy to some egregious interpretations of the trend, the style has also found many beautiful forms including fabrics adorned with delicate beading and jewels. Inheriting monikers like ‘The Naked Dress’ this is definitely a ‘less is more’ aesthetic but also requires the wearer to proceed with caution. While some are brave and bold enough to almost bare it all, a more

demure and sophisticated look can be easily achieved by introducing a slip into the sheer situation or even donning a crop top and pants under a sheer tunic. Local boutiques and online retailers including ASOS are positively teeming with options; graceful gowns – long, short and in between – that are a much more affordable adaptation of their high fashion counterparts. From audaciously risqué to more reserved, there is something for everyone in this enduring trend.

Set in the foyer of the gallery, guests enjoy wine from Pegasus Bay Wines and canapes from Lizzies Cuisine. The best

ANTI-AGEING TREATMENTS FOR 2017 Appearance medicine is a rapidly growing area of medicine with new and improved treatments to reverse the signs of ageing being developed constantly. With so much information out there, it’s hard to know which treatments are going to give you the best results for your time and money.

D

r Brigid Lee from the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic in Christchurch has reviewed what’s available to help make your decision easier. “When clients say, ‘I look older than I really am’, it can be very disconcerting. One of the most common ‘trouble spots’ is the lower face and neck. In fact, a change in the contour of the jawline is one of the first things ageing clients say

they notice when they look in the mirror. The formation of jowls, the degeneration of soft tissue cells, and the sinking in of the chin are all connected to collagen deficiencies.” Now there is Ultherapy which is the only non-invasive procedure - FDA-cleared - to lift skin on the neck, under the chin and jowls and on the eyebrow and to improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles on

the décolletage. Ultherapy uses the power of ultrasound to transform the brow, chin, neck and chest. Ultrasound, of course, has been used safely throughout the medical field for more than 50 years—and Ultherapy has been established as safe and effective in clinical studies and in over half a million treatments worldwide. PALAZZO PERFECTION By Kate Pierson

Trans-seasonal wear has a new protagonist in its sartorial story – palazzo pants.

W

ith a wider waistband and flared legs, comfort and class come together to create a look that can take you from day to night through every season. Easy, breezy and beautiful for the summer weather, palazzo pants found their style rhythm in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Evocative of the wide-legged, cuffed trousers made famous by fans of avantgarde fashion in the 1930s and 1940s think silver screen goddesses like Katharine Hepburn and Greta Garbo and even Coco Chanel as far back as the roaring twenties – the palazzo pant is a rebel with a cause. They survived the condemnation of uptight traditionalists during an era where women donning pants were seen as

nonconformists and were banned from upscale restaurants when wearing them instead of a socially accepted and more palatable frock. In the end, counter culture prevailed as the palazzo pant has enjoyed a long and illustrious history, reincarnated

old, and stimulated by intellectual curiosity and culture, Transformers pays colourful homage to a zeitgeist of the 21st century; the chameleon like nature of the female psyche. While remaining fundamentally true to herself and without pseudo involved, the modern woman reinvents herself on a daily basis as part of her diverse and sometimes disparate roles and responsibilities. “In an average day I need to take on so many different personas. That’s modern life for all women,” Walker explains. In a first for the brand, Walker has stepped in front of the lens; she is both producer and protagonist of the story.

ASHION NEWS ANNOUNCEMENT Referencing the work of Cindy Sherman, the art photographer who uses fictitious versions of herself as her subject and the hyper-real self-portraiture of Robert Mapplethorpe and Andy Warhol, Walker’s collection is a triumphant and successful showcase of alterego. Unquestionably a fitting tribute to the times we live in. “I was the scientist in the laboratory who resorts to turning the experiment on herself… I am all of them [the characters] and none of them. Leading modern medicine for a

HEALTHIER NEW ZEALAND

Christchurch Colorectal – its people and its practice – have an impressive reputation, and rightly so.

F

ive leading surgeons (John Frye, Chris Wakeman, Tim Eglinton, Frank Frizelle and Richard Tapper) have extensive expertise in the management of diseases which are prevalent in New Zealand – those of the colon, rectum and anus. Each is a fellow or member of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand. As the largest specialist colorectal practice in the South Island, Christchurch Colorectal is at the forefront of combating bowel cancer, which is particularly important in New Zealand given the country has one of the highest bowel cancer rates in the world and it is the second highest cause of cancer death in this country. More than 3000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year and more than 1200 die from the disease.

successfully treated – a 90% chance of long-term survival – if detected early. “If there is a delay in diagnosis and treatment and the cancer is more advanced, it is harder to cure. So our advice is ‘don’t delay’. Even if there is no evidence of a malignant tumour there may be pre-cancerous polyps. Most bowel cancers develop from benign polyps so all but the smallest should be removed to ensure they don’t turn into cancer.” Christchurch Colorectal is based at Specialist Centre@21, Level 2, 21 Caledonian Road, St Albans - on the Southern Cross campus. These are new modern rooms with easy access, including a lift and discreet covered and uncovered parking. Contact details -968-3140 or via www.christchurchcolorectal.co.nz

Vigilance is key - any concerns or symptoms should be addressed, particularly when there is a family history of bowel cancer.

“Bowel cancer is more common as you get older, particularly from the age of 50. Common signs and symptoms of bowel cancer may include changes in the normal pattern of going to the toilet that continue for several weeks (such as diarrhoea, constipation, or feeling that your bowel doesn’t empty completely), blood in your bowel motion, tiredness and weight loss,” John Frye and Chris Wakeman say. Bowel cancer affects both men and women and the team at Christchurch Colorectal advises that vigilance is key - any concerns or symptoms should be addressed, particularly when there is a family history of bowel cancer. “People can make an appointment with us at Christchurch Colorectal and we can carry out a diagnostic colonoscopy. here’s no waiting. Diners choose what mouth-wateringly presented Japanese and Vietnamese small plates they like as they sail past on the conveyer belt, such as sushi, prawn dumplings or teriyaki beef rolls. Colourcoded plates relate the dish’s price from $2.90 to $5.90. It’s also the ultimate dining for time-short lunches or great for groups of friends. Hot dishes and gelato and frozenyoghurt desserts can also be ordered around the train or in the booths. Larger groups have table seating down by the cocktail bar, which has sake-based Japanese cocktails, wine and refreshing Japanese Asahi lager. The fresh takeaway or dine-in sushi

WALKING ON WATER By Sarah Waldron

Stand up paddle boarding (SUP) is the latest outdoor water sport to hit New Zealand. It’s also one of the most popular activities to do this summer, especially in the Waimakariri, North Canterbury.

B

ridie and Jess from of the Sea Stand Up Paddle Co. offer SUP in North Canterbury so we gave it a go on a warm evening with a rare, calm, nor west sky. After a safety briefing, getting kitted out with a belted life jacket, some basic skills and a warm up, we headed out into the glassy waters of the Ashley Rakahuri Estuary at Waikuku Beach. The lagoon provided the perfect location to view schools of fish, large kahawai and the many protected bird species that have made the estuary home. The water was so clear we could see the bottom for most of the journey, but it turns a rich green blue towards the river mouth.

It’s a great way to explore an otherwise untouched area on a beautiful, chilled out evening. As we neared the end of our trip, we tried some yoga stretches and poses. Thank goodness Of the Sea Stand Up Paddle Co. use Christchurch based, PPC Stand Up Paddle Boards. These boards are extremely stable and provided a perfect floating platform for yoga. Bridie is an NZ SUP Accredited instructor and Jess is a Yoga Alliance certified teacher trained in India at Samyak Yoga. Together they make up Of the Sea Stand Up Paddle Co and offer safaris and yoga classes on the SUP’s for all levels at Pegasus Lake, Ashley Rakahuri River and other locations throughout the region.

Add candles to a table centrepiece, or fairy lights to external decorations or baby’s breath to hairpieces and bouquets. And when you think there’s enough... add a bit more because, well, when it comes to this trend, more really is more.

Own the best of both worlds

Visitors flooded back to their favourite alpine destination this Christmas, as November’s earthquake barely rocked Hanmer, which experienced nominal damage to both property and spirit.

“W

e are a strong community. Everyone came to the fore to support each other,” says Harley Manion of Harcourts Twiss-Keir Realty. At the dawn of the New Year, he was already busy writing up contracts. “2016 was exceptional, eclipsing previous years. Given the current activity in January, it’s looking like an even greater year ahead.”

Harcourt’s award-winning agent and family man, who grew up in Hanmer, is privy to local knowledge, such as community life, commercial positioning and the best spots for sun. Harley teams up with his mother, June Manion - an agent for 17 years - to provide attentive customer service with a genuine passion for the area. With many a loyal client, they sell across the spectrum in Hanmer - residential, lifestyle, business and commercial properties. He says Hanmer has specific ‘design standards’ which require pitched rooflines to retain the alpine charm that the area is so wellknown for. “The best of both worlds is owning a home here that also doubles as a holiday rental,” says Harley, who finds his economics degree useful when offering an analytical approach to clients’ financial decisions. “Residential homes start at $359,000, and even at this level can achieve very good occupancies.” He says there’ll also be some outstanding multi-million dollar commercial developments this year. “This is something that Hanmer is going to be really proud of, so watch this space!” Call Harley to discuss your property requirements on 021 149 8050, email harley.manion@harcourts.co.nz, or visit www.hanmersprings.harcourts.co.nz

FOOD RESOLUTIONS By Melinda Collins

Cut back the sugar: As scientific studies and media headlines discuss the dangers of sugar, the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines propose that we consume less than 5 percent of our daily calories from added sugar — that’s about six teaspoons a day, just quarter of what the average person consumes today.

Up the fibre: At its most basic, fibre is the indigestible parts of plant foods. It is the husk on the grain of wheat, the thin strands in celery, the crunch in the apple, the casings on edible seeds. Health literature suggests it has the potential to mitigate heart disease and digestive problems as well as lowering cholesterol, and helping with weight control.

Increase your Omega-3s:

As we enter a New Year, saddled with expectations and armed with all the motivation our still-merry minds can muster, we’ve got numerous resolutions planned to ensure happiness at the other end.

C

ome March and our resolve is starting to slip, marking the beginning of a gradual decline which sees all our motivation completely zapped somewhere in between June and July.

So, why not battle the age-old ‘lose weight’ and ‘eat healthier’ resolutions from a different perspective and cut them into bite-sized servings? We’ve got five culinary resolutions you may like to consider.

Research shows omega-3 fatty acids can work to reduce inflammation and may help lower risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and arthritis. Omega-3 fatty acids are highly concentrated in the brain and appear to be important for brain performance and behavioural function.

Stack up on veges: The best part about this new lifestyle is that you don’t have to go hungry which many of your previous resolutions would demand. In fact, this lifestyle recommends you stack your plate up sky high with veges. And who doesn’t appreciate a stacked up plate?

want to look back and go, “I wish I’d drunk that great bottle of whisky and shared great memories with friends”. So, it’s gone. Over a dinner with friends who would appreciate this golden slender, it was mostly consumed, the remainder of it polished off after the November Kaikoura earthquake. If you are interested in sharing the Glenmorangie experience with friends or for yourself, there is an option. Glenmorangie has released a taster box. Take yourself or a loved one on a journey through the exquisite range of Glenmorangie expressions including; Glenmorangie Original, Lasanta, Quinta Ruban and Nectar D’Or. RRP is an affordable $65 and available from the team at Whisky Galore at 834 Colombo Street. Enjoyed by both the young and old for generations, Glenmorangie is the finest tipple for whisky enthusiasts with impeccable taste and is without a doubt the perfect gift of choice for one of the most important men, or women, in your life. I had a wonderful bottle of Glenmorangie Signet given to me by a friend and valued at a hefty price. Most investors would cringe at the fact I opened it and shared it. Investors look at whisky like some people look at shares; a bottle gaining in price by percentage to be sold at an opportune moment. GO AHEAD,

WOO By Nicholas Henare

ME 44 February 02, 2017 Metropol

One of the culinary highlights in New Zealand is the team of Josh Emett and Fleur Caulton, so what could be more exciting than the talent opening a prestigious Madam Woo this February in the McKenzie and Willis building?

I

caught up with Fleur for a chat. “Josh and I have been searching for the right location in Christchurch and believe that we have finally found it, making it the right time for us to have a presence there.” If you’ve been there, you’ll get it; it’s an uplifting experience and has a busy buzz – the perfect backdrop for a fun date night. When I ask what some of the highlights will be, Fleur is able to tempt me with: “Madam Woo Christchurch will offer the same inspired and energetic mashup of traditional Malaysian Hawker Food, fresh Kiwi produce and big, bold flavours.” Hawker rolls are great things. “There are so many great dishes you can eat – Beef and Chicken Ren Dang; Prawn and Pork Fried Noodles; authentic recipes. It’s shared food and trendy sharing plates.” I ask if we can also expect some of Woo’s traditional dishes on the menu. “The menu will include dishes such as Honey and Soy Tossed Squid; Chicken and Prawn Laksa Soup; Stir Fried Pork Belly and, of course, the famous Hawker Roll, a roti Canai-style roll topped with a choice of pulled sticky pork with pickled cucumber, Percik Chicken with toasted coconut, or soy sesame eggplant with red chilli dressing - a dish Madam Woo is well-known for.” Now, I’m a foody, but what type of person will be a raving fan? Fleur says: “The atmosphere at Madam Woo is nothing short of fun, enjoyable and lively with staff that are friendly and knowledgeable, a menu that is full of flavour,

and a drinks list that is extensive. We want guests to leave feeling satisfied both in appetite and experience every time they choose to dine with us.” “The new Christchurch restaurant will be stylishly designed to reflect the colourful personality of Madam Woo. The décor will contribute to the entertaining, fast, and vibrant identity that Madam Woo represents. Our outdoor area will have lots of sun and we have a great, free carpark after 6pm meaning great accessibility.” So Christchurch, you better buckle up and get ready for something a little bit special. I’ll be there for a Woo Brew. What’s a Woo Brew? Halital Beer is a beer partner. Woo Brew is their own lager. It’s seasonal and not the norm on the wine or beverage list. This, along with some really interesting wines and cocktails, equals fun things to drink. Everything is about quality and that pretty much sums up what to expect from Madam Woo too. Enjoy!

A TOAST TO VALENTINE’S DAY By Dave McLoughlin

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I’m sure everyone will be thinking about how they can show their loved one that they care and plan a special treat or something to make them feel special.

D

espite the obvious commercial spin that surrounds the modern day celebrations, it has a deep rooted origin, dating back to when Saint Valentine of Terni died and was martyred on 14 February 273 AD. How he died is a mystery, although one legend has it that when Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men — his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, reputed to be a priest, realised the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Through the ages, Valentine’s day has been recognised in many different ways, with some believing the real links to a Roman courtship festival. Only since the late 17th century did it become popular to exchange a Valentine’s message with a loved one. But right around 1996 it became very common to take your Valentine for a romantic meal at The Villas. This February, you will receive a free glass of bubbles on arrival and enjoy an intimate evening with your loved one. Book early as space will be limited this Valentine’s Day.

FRESH FOOD MADE WITH LOVE It’s not just the freshest homemade food, but the genuinely warm service from Café Raeward’s cheerful team, that’s a stand out.

T

he bustling Harewood Road eatery is conveniently attached to the vibrant Raeward Fresh grocery store – both becoming gourmet havens in recent years. The food is fabulous and caters to everyone, and the qualified staff members are exceptional. “Our friendly café is managed by Sarah-Jane, and we have a team of eight talented, qualified and passionate chefs in our two kitchens,” says owner/manager Kerri Lee. “Our head chef, Donavan, will walk round with a trolley in the grocery store picking out fresh, wholesome, locally produced ingredients for the café. They are inventive with changing seasonal fruits and vegetables, such as bejeweled pomegranate seeds on lively salads.” All tastes and requirements

are catered for from the cabinet’s paninis, frittatas, gourmet sandwiches and scones through to sinless dairy, gluten and refined-sugar free raw salted caramel or ginger slices. Summer’s breakfast menu is exceptional. Dukka Eggs on Turkish bread is an institution, and the tasty Mexican-inspired Huevos Rancheros are a favourite as is The Acai Bowl, an Amazonian super food power breakfast. The lunch menu entices with sensations such as The Boss Lady Salad – with sesame crusted salmon fillet; Caribbean spiced jerk chicken; or calamari with lime, chipotle and aioli. The licensed café is popular for business meetings, being minutes from the airport. Additionally there’s a courtyard playground so parents can relax while children play. The café’s car park container also serves the café’s same great Vivace coffee and turmeric lattes to take-away. Beautiful

back to beat the

school blues By Melinda Collins

You’ve survived the school holidays, that’s a real feat in itself. But not quite sure how to tackle the back to school blues? Here are some fun ideas to make the transition a bit more fun.

G

et the children involved in selecting the school supplies. Whether you’ve got a little organiser who likes to cross things off a check list on your hands, or one who enjoys the in-store ‘hunt’ for supplies, why not make this a fun exercise? Better yet, let them choose how to decorate those super boring exercise books. A great idea is to use photographs, stickers and clear

Celebrate back-to-school with something that will make your child feel confident and ready for new adventures.

Duraseal, perhaps some glitter for the girls because, well, everything looks better with glitter, right? Buy a special back to school item. Whether it’s a new school bag or lunchbox, celebrate back-to-school with something that will make your child feel confident and ready for new adventures. Make some fun term-time plans, whether it’s trips to the beach in the weekend, or a movie night at home with the family. Whatever the plans, it will give you all something to look forward to during the long week. While you’re at it, why not sit down as a family and plan some goals for the upcoming year? But don’t forget to get your thinking caps on about next Christmas! Get up nice and early on the first day of school and surprise the kids with their favourite breakfast on their first day back. Nothing says ‘cheer up’ like a six-tier pancake stack oozing in syrup…. And for yourself? If you’re back to work too, why not print and frame some of those beautiful holiday snaps to sit on your desk at work to brighten up the working week?

LULLABY By Kate Pierson

There is a beautiful, equality driven concept called The Baby Box programme that originated 75 years ago in Finland. Ireland has recently adopted the phenomenon which sees every newborn provided with a simple but generous care pack containing a sleeping box and other essentials like nappies.

T

he Baby Box is gifted free to new mothers and exists to give all babies, no matter their background, the same start in life. It is an inspiring philosophy – one yet to make its way to the Long White Cloud. Until that day, and even when that day comes, we can rejoice in the opportunity to create a dreamy space for the special new babes that come into our lives.

hile we are certainly fans of nautical life we’d rather pay homage to the beauty of the ocean and its occupants with more of a light touch. Themed statement pieces are best as accents – linen, candelabras, ornaments and the like - with a broader nautical visual narrative achieved throughout the colour scheme. Crisp blues and whites make the dream décor combo, achieving a clean and modern yet timeless aesthetic.

Artwork with a marine-life theme creates a sense of whimsy and romance in the home with heavy, weathered leather trunks and trinkets like vintage binoculars and telescopes the perfect way to pay homage to ‘a space of crystal completeness’ as Pablo Neruda described it.

Despite its virtuous qualities, unfortunately it can also fall victim to normal wear and tear a lot faster than its peers on the colour spectrum and it tends to be more high maintenance when it comes to care. The face of

community

The use of ‘altruism’ and ‘corporate’ in one sentence could be considered an oxymoron but Nick Yannakis, of highly respected engineering consultancy firm Powell Fenwick, has refreshingly flipped that notion on its head. And so has the organisation itself for that matter.

70 February 02, 2017 Metropol

he deserving recipient of the Greenwood Roche Young Achiever of the Year Award in the 2016 Property Council New Zealand Southern Excellence Awards, Yannakis has found his stride working for a company that is the embodiment of the values he holds dearest – integrity, innovation and community-centricity. Powell Fenwick is devoted to great culture as much as it is to delivering an integrated service defined by an economical system. It is no surprise therefore, that Yannakis has found a sense of belonging and tremendous success at the firm. Over a decade, Yannakis has earned extraordinary expertise in Pool Water Services as a Technical Director. He has been involved in a number of the most prolific infrastructural projects in Christchurch including Jellie Park Redevelopment, Graham Condon Recreation & Sport Centre and Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre as well as community projects such as West Spreydon School Pool. One of his first managerial projects included his position as Services Lead for the multi-award winning, $13 million Selwyn Aquatic

Centre in Canterbury with the services engineering undertaking by Powell Fenwick. Yannakis’ outstanding portfolio also includes leadership of the $30 million EA Networks Sports Centre, and specialist consultancy work on the Liz van Welie Swim School in Tauranga and the Wanaka Aquatic Centre. He was recently chosen to work as the client representative for QEII Recreation and Sport Centre and to work on the new $300 million Metro Sports Centre. A palpably doting father and loving husband, Yannakis’ extraordinary career evolution can be distilled down to one key virtue that cannot be overstated: loyalty to community. This, combined with his special gift of helping to foster democratic participation among people of all ages, makes Yannakis an incredible asset to the Garden City. In his own words: “Christchurch people are active in wanting to develop things in their own backyard, people want to be involved with their community and my family and I love it here because of that. We wouldn’t want to leave.” For more information about Powell Fenwick visit www.pfc.co.nz

community triumph Sumner’s new surf lifesaving clubrooms epitomise Hawkins’ approach to building better communities.

T

he building with a ‘wave form’ roof has become a Sumner landmark, defining the entrance to the suburb. Architect David Hill says the success of a project often comes down to how the team members relate, communicate and work together. The seven members of the club’s rebuild committee, Hawkins, Wilson and Hill Architects and the consultant team pulled together for the award-winning $2.8 million project. Hill says the project benefited from regular site meetings, good communication and positive relationships between team members. “The Hawkins team was key to achieving this,” he says. “The standard of workmanship was high. For example, they laid a section of the curved roof on the ground so we could discuss and refine the details before installation,” says Hill. Hill sees the building as a milestone in Sumner’s earthquake recovery. “The positive feedback has given a lot of locals a sense of contribution.”

JOHN O’SULLIVAN

The facility won the Supreme Award at the Property Council’s 2016 Southern Excellence Awards, as well as winning Best Project Team. In a big night for Hawkins, its South Island New Business Manager Ryan Croy also won the Judge’s Choice award. “It was a fantastic opportunity and the team made the most of it,” says Hawkins site manager, John O’Sullivan. As a community project, Hawkins held

barbeques celebrating construction milestones and hosted walk-arounds to give club members a sense of the new floor space. “We really let them get involved. These guys were operating out of sea containers for four and a half years so they were super keen to get stuck in.” Andrea Johnson worked with Hawkins, alongside her husband, surf club president Murray. “We had a fantastic relationship with Hawkins. They were always incredibly professional and as passionate about the outcome for our club as we were.” “Many surf club members had a full time job on top of being involved in the build and Hawkins was very tolerant and obliging of our situation,” she says. Hawkins South Island Regional Manager Steve Taw says the new club facility is a true representation of what is possible when a construction firm and consultants partner with a community organisation. “The project team worked closely to provide cost effective and innovative solutions to challenges,” he says. “And to encourage local community engagement throughout the design process, we created an online forum to generate ideas which was well received.”

A

t just 33 years of age, Ryan Croy, Hawkins South Island New Business Manager has been recognised for his leadership and passion in Christchurch’s earthquake rebuild. Ryan recently won the Anderson Lloyd Judge’s Choice Award in the Southern Excellence awards. “When you think about Ryan you think about passion and strategic thinking,” says Steve Taw, Hawkins South Island Regional Manager says. “At Hawkins we recognise our young leaders and it’s about fostering and encouraging guys like Ryan to reach for the stars. His business acumen and relationship-building skills have made him a valued member of our leadership team.” Ryan’s achievements include high-value bids for projects including the Christchurch Town Hall and University of Canterbury.
