O
ne of the things I love about my job is the opportunity to meet truly uplifting and inspiring people. Some people have a gift of sharing their positivity, encouraging you to pursue your own creative endeavours more passionately. Recently at the inaugural Ballantynes Fashion Week I was fortunate enough to meet four outstanding women who have all excelled in their careers – fashion designers Trelise Cooper and Paula Ryan, guru of the beauty industry Marie-Ann Billens and exceptional international model Kylie Bax. All of the women I interviewed spoke of being strong, considerate and complimentary of others and of the importance of following your passions, listening to your gut instincts and being bold enough to take risks. You can read about the new trends and colours for the season, Paula's advice about dressing for your body not your age, and Marie-Ann's beauty tips for all ages on pages 27-29. The Hon Nicky Wagner is another incredible woman who has worked tirelessly to make a difference in people's lives. Her personal comments on the flag debate are insightful and offer another perspective to this much discussed upcoming referendum. As always we cover a raft of topics from getting out enjoying the walking and biking tracks of McLeans Island to discovering new restaurants around town and the best spots to listen to some of your favourite music. THE FLAG DEBATE
Talk around the flag debate has run from serious, in consideration of men who fought under our current flag; to the divisive, for the Red Peak flag supporters; and the humorous for those who favoured the Kiwi with the laser beam eye flag. But as the first referendum on the New Zealand flag draws near what are your thoughts? Does our current flag define modern New Zealand? Is it readily identifiable? Is it the right time to change? For a personal view I caught up with the Hon Nicky Wagner MP for Central Christchurch… As an MP Have you experienced any awkward moments regarding the similarity between the NZ and Australia flags? Yes, I have. Although I hate to admit it. A couple of years ago on ANZAC Day I went with another Minister to the dawn service. We went in a Crown Car with flags flying and felt very smart and very patriotic. It was only after we got there that we discovered we had been flying the Australian flag! And my friend Tim Groser who is the Minister of Trade had a very embarrassing episode at the UN. He was part of a ceremony where each country's representative presented their flag for display in the Great Hall. The problem was, that each country went in alphabetical order and when they called New Zealand, our flag had already been taken by the Aussies. So Tim had no
choice, he had to present the Australian flag. Do you think the current flag defines modern New Zealand? I think that the present flag has served us well. But I am keen to look to the future, and would like to see a flag that people recognise as uniquely New Zealand. I am a very proud, one eyed Cantabrian and New Zealander. I like to think that our little country at the bottom of the world is special. We have a unique inclusive culture, we're smart, innovative and globally connected. Our new flag should look forward not back. Is the timing right for change? Yes, particularly for Canterbury. As we regenerate our city we want to expand our thinking and our aspirations for our community and make the most of every opportunity that comes our way. I would like to see us proudly flying a new flag to symbolise our new open way of thinking. Which is your personal favourite and why? I like the blue and black Kyle Lockwood design with the Silver Fern and Southern Cross. The Silver Fern – because it represents our special connection with the land, and for its historical use on war graves. The Southern Cross – because it is always there in our clear skies inspiring and encouraging us to have a big vision for the future. Blue – for our seas, and our big sky and, black – for our national sports colour.

SPRING FLING HELPS CURE KIDS Hosted by Brendon Pongia, The Cure Kids Annual Spring Fling was a night of fashion, glamour and entertainment. Bright, exuberant dance

ou cannot miss Giddha. The exuberant, colourful dance of the Punjab region of India will be one of many highlights in the Singapore Airlines Christchurch Diwali 2015 programme on 24 October, particularly for the 12 women performing the popular dance of the Punjab region. Jewellery flashing and skirts flying, the women performing Giddha dance for Diwali are guaranteed to perform to a capacity crowd at the Horncastle Arena judging by the turnout for the 2014 Diwali. They have been practising for up to 12 hours a week for the big event. Jaskiran Sidhu, who has danced professionally in India, is one of the leaders of the group. “In India we get together and girls dance Giddha at festive occasions,” she said. The Singapore Airlines Christchurch Diwali 2015 opens at 3pm and features performances by over 350 dancers and musicians on the main stage from 5pm to 9pm, as well as food stalls selling Indian street food, arts and crafts and a surprise or two as well. Tickets are $10 (under 5 free) available on the door – first in, first served.

DUX RETURNS TO CENTRAL CITY Inspired by the spirit of Dux de Lux is Richard Sinke’s new venture Dux Central in Poplar Lane. The new complex in the old Twisted Hop site houses The Brew Bar, The Poplar Social Club, The Emerald Room, and Upper Dux. Crowds gathered for the opening recently as acrobats and entertainers performed. Guests enjoyed sampling from the range of fabulous food served up by Dux’s exceptionally talented chefs, while bar staff served up sumptuous cocktails, winning wines, and of course excellent craft beer. Dux Central joins Richard Sinke’s two other Dux locations in Christchurch, Dux Dine on Riccarton Road and Dux Live on Lincoln Road.

ROSSENDALE HOSTS SPRING DANCE FOR K9 K9 Rescue and Rehoming had their grand reopening on 19 September at Rossendale Vineyard to celebrate K9 becoming a fully registered charitable trust. K9 are also in the process of developing an education programme for children and hope to kick start this in the middle of 2016. The spring dance raised some much-needed funds to kickstart rescuing local dogs and puppies within our community. K9 Rescue uses a foster system - all their dogs and puppies live in family homes and are involved in daily family routines.

A quality night for CF New Zealand

O
ver a hundred people attended the re-dedication of the refurbished Spitfire. The Spitfire replica and the Memorial Wall were gifted to the people of Christchurch on the occasion of the Battle of Britain Commemorative Service 19 September 1999. At that ceremony the then-Mayor of Christchurch, Garry Moore, and Hugh McCarroll, on behalf of Christchurch International Airport Limited (CIAL) undertook custodianship of the Spitfire replica and the Memorial Wall. In recent times, four companies had been discussing mutual concern over the state of disrepair of the two items. Work being done on Russley Road and future building of the related overpass also meant the Spitfire and associated sculpture of Icarus would soon become inaccessible to the public. The partners felt the need to remove, renovate and reinstate the Spitfire and the Icarus Wall out of respect and approached the Brevet Club with a proposal to refurbish the two items, then reposition them in a place where members of the public can access them easily and safely. The replica has been restored over some months and repositioned in Spitfire Square, the retail precinct being developed on Memorial Avenue.
ocal Christchurch hotel property Quality Hotel Elms, hosted a charity auction evening to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand (CFNZ) recently. Chris McLaughlin, Hotel Manager of Quality Hotel Elms in Papanui, said the evening was their way of giving back and showing support for the property's existing relationship with CFNZ. After a six-course degustation dinner, guest performance by local musician Natalie Elms, whiskey tastings and raffle sales, the property, part of Choice Hotels Asia-Pac, raised an impressive $15,000 for CFNZ. The collective fundraising efforts from ticket and raffle sales of the event will go towards CFNZ fieldworkers who travel the country to support and positively influence the lives of those living with cystic fibrosis. Previously the Quality Hotel Elms has donated $2 of every night stayed at its property to CFNZ during the Choice Hotels Asia-Pac annual $2 donation week. Following the success of the fundraising evening, Chris and his team are looking forward to hosting round two.

New NZ play wins at International Festival
R
angi Ruru Girls' School has won Best Youth Production and Runner-up Best Overall Production at the acclaimed Norfolk Island Theatre Festival and the school's Director of Theatre Arts, Robert Gilbert has for the sixth time been named Best Director. The group of Year 13 students performed 'Breaking News', a brand new play by award-winning New Zealand playwright, Angie Farrow. 'Breaking News' explores the relationship between self-image and media, and Robert Gilbert describes the play as a perfect fit for the cast. “The girls immediately identified with the central character,” said Mr Gilbert. “As an ensemble piece of physical theatre, they really had to commit to a disciplined rehearsal regime. They put their hearts and souls into their roles and that came across with their winning performance,” he said. This is only the second time Rangi Ruru have competed at the festival. In 2013 a group of Year 12 students won Best Production for their performance of 'Bottom's Tale', an excerpt from William Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.

Next generation fashion Right now, fashion is discovering the bohemian vitality of the '70s as if for the rst time.

t's a retro remix of the most exciting kind, referencing the decade of fun, freedom and individuality. The next generation of girls and boys is driving the revival for a new era, and a fresh approach is revolutionising everyday dressing for SS15. For girls, fringing, ares and denim forms the basis for style on the go. Naturally, jeans become the focus. From clean indigo to vivid blue, yesterday's washes become today's staples as new cuts and details o er a twenty- rst century update. Lace-up detail, patches and strategic abrasions lend a lived-in look to otherwise crisp pieces. Frayed or tailored, the best denim does well doubled up and teamed with aviator sunglasses and a Panama hat, or worn with statement stripes. What is the inspiration behind this season's collections? The Spring and Summer collections are inspired by a recent visit to the Palace of Versailles. It is a collection designed to delight the senses with a feast of colours like buttercream, pink champagne, and lace as fine as spun sugar. What are the key pieces and colours of this season's collections? This season we have launched our very first Limited-Edition White Collection to really celebrate the colour (or lack of!) that's having a moment in fashion right now. The collection brings white to life in lots of different ways; using luxurious textures like silk, linen, lace along with all kinds of embellishment from appliqué flowers to embossed leather. What defines style in your eyes? To me style is the ability to speak without saying a word. When I design, I am most interested in the way that a garment makes a woman feel; the transformative effect it has on her mood or personality. I am inspired by women like Iris Apfel who have such spirit in their personal style. What is the most important lesson you have learned in your professional life? To get up every day, work hard and really love what you do, because that's how you become successful. I also truly believe, and often tell my staff that you're only as good as the team behind you. What is your proudest achievement professionally? Why? It was the greatest honour when I was appointed a Dame for services to fashion and the community. Outside of work, I am most proud of my son, Jasper. What advice would you give your 20-something year old self? In my twenties I was only beginning to discover who I am and the journey I would take. After many years of reading, courses and workshops, I found creative visualisation – if you can dream it you can do it. My advice to myself would be to enjoy the freedom of doing things my way and if you believe it, you can achieve it.

Where do you get your inspiration from in general? From what I and my friends and family like to wear.
What is the inspiration behind this season's collection? Summer in the city; Summer at the beach. What are the key pieces and colours of this collection? Black and white. How would you define your design aesthetic? What elements of design are in each collection? I start with the fabric – it's all about the science of the fabric. We have four main fabrics – two Italian and two New Zealand merinos. Once you know how your fabric performs you can work with it in numerous ways. Kylie, as the face of Paula Ryan what are your favourite pieces of this collection? All of them are my favourites! I think the cover shot was my favourite outfit – it's a very special dress – a signature piece in my opinion. White very flowing, soft and it also comes in black and caramel. It's a dress you can put on and dress up or down – it's just beautiful. Paula, what defines style in your eyes? Fashion we buy, style is what we do with it. What is the most important lesson you have learned in your professional life? Look and listen a lot and be aware of everything that is going on around you. What is your proudest achievement professionally? Why? Launching magazines that have survived. FQ is now 35 years old.

MARIE-ANN BILLENS You have been involved with Estée Lauder Companies for 25 years – what does it take for a beauty brand to succeed in this competitive industry? Like any business you have to have a very clear vision and the strategy in place to achieve it - innovation and creativity are critical for success. You need to listen to your customers, be authentic and deliver on your promises. And finally you must value the people who touch your customers; they are the reason for your success. What defines beauty in your eyes? A great smile - enhanced by a lipstick shade you love! Which are your top three must-have beauty products?
An eyebrow pencil, eyebrows define your face and many women don't realise the impact this can have on their overall look. A foundation brush, it gives you a more flawless finish and makes your foundation last a lot longer as you use less. A bronzing powder - it adds definition and gives vitality to your skin all year round. What advice would you give your 20something year old self? Not every fashion trend will suit you! What are your top tips for slowing signs of ageing? Wear a sunscreen every day or a product with an SPF, invest in a good eye cream and use Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair. I have used it every day for 25 years and swear by it. What advice can you give women in their 20s-30s? Remove your make up every night; it will pay off in the long term.
40s-50s? Serums contain so many great ingredients and they are the product you use if you want great value for money because of their potency. And older? Bleeding lips can be a problem for some. Apply a lip pencil all over your lips first and then your lipstick. The lipstick will last longer and you should avoid the creeping. How do you balance your professional and personal life? I walk for an hour every morning with my partner, not only is it enjoyable exercise but it gives you time to talk, which at the end of a busy working day is not always easy. I work solidly during the week, but am very protective of my weekends and our company has a rule that emails cannot be sent during the weekend, which is very liberating.

Growing demand for A&P SHOW Two popular areas at the Canterbury A&P Show are getting a makeover to cope with growing demand from show visitors.
T
emporary grandstand seating has been built around the wood-chopping arena, lending 300 more seats to spectators wanting to get the best view of the high-intensity wood-chopping action. Event Director Geo Bone said that building the grandstand was a necessary investment to enhance the Show experience for show visitors. Last year seating on the embankment and existing stands was at capacity. We know how popular the woodchopping is so it s great to be able to o er so much extra space for our show visitors and also to support the Canterbury Axemen s Club and all the competitors who put months and months of work into bringing the competition together.

A
unique, natural recreational area carved into a pine forest sits just 10 kilometres from the edge of the city. Biking or walking through McLeans Forest, which is part of the Waimakariri River Regional Park, is a refreshing experience for people of all fitness levels. You could almost say it's the perfect place for the whole family to enjoy a day out, with its 11km walking and 17km mountain biking tracks, its large picnic area, shop and toilet facilities. With the recent big winds in Canterbury, the forest was spared this time from too much damage. The last time an almighty windstorm swept through, in September 2013, a lot of the forest needed to be cleared because the wind felled many of the trees. Environment Canterbury closed the tracks for two months to make sure they were safe and the dangerous trees removed. Although a lot of trees have gone the beauty and smell of the pine forest remain. There's the 10km Tresillian Loop for mountain bikers, which is suitable for the whole family, and starts and finishes in the carpark. To make it more challenging, you could add in the 2km River Loop and the

McLeans Forest, which is part of the Waimakariri River Regional Park, is a refreshing experience for people of all fitness levels.
5km Coringa Loop for a longer ride. To ensure the experience is pleasant for everyone, it's important to remember the tracks are one-way only, and there are plenty of direction markers to ensure you keep on track. There's also a noticeboard at the beginning of the course that should be checked each time you ride in case there's important safety information to take note of. The walking and jogging track twists and winds through the pine forest. If you have a durable stroller, your little ones will enjoy the fresh air too. Although the new walking tracks have thick shingle in places, if you're strong enough to push the stroller through you're sure to enjoy the stroll. One thing that ECan reminds users of the recreational park is that fire is a constant threat to this forest. Lighting fires and smoking is strictly prohibited, and if you see smoke or fire, call 111 immediately and leave the forest. The neighbouring golf course, or other large areas which have short green grass, are safe places in case of emergency. Gates to the forest playground are now open at 7am until 10pm all year round.

This traditional English pudding, by Ant & Lou Bentley of the Akaroa Cooking School, is moreish, deliciously sticky and a favourite all year round. It's a great do-ahead dish as both the pudding and the sauce can be made ahead of time and reheated just before serving.
STICKY TOFFEE PUDDINGS WITH CARAMEL SAUCE Serves 8 Ingredients: 200g dates 275ml hot water 100g butter 1/2 cup caster sugar 2 small eggs 160g plain flour 1/2 tsp ground cloves 1 tsp baking powder 75g mascarpone

Method: Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease 8 x 200ml ramekins with butter and place onto a baking tray. Roughly chop dates and add hot water. Simmer until the dates form a paste. Set aside and cool. Meanwhile cream the butter and sugar until very light and fluffy. Add eggs and beat until light and fluffy. Add all of the other ingredients and stir until just combined. Pour the mixture into the ramekins and place into the oven. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until a skewer comes out cleanly. CARAMEL SAUCE Ingredients: 150g brown sugar 100g butter 100ml cream Ingredients: Put all ingredients into a saucepan and cook until sugar is melted and you have a thick glossy sauce. This can be made ahead of time and reheated just before serving. Store any leftover in the fridge.

To serve: Run a small palette knife around each pudding and invert onto warm serving plates. Pour over a generous quantity of caramel sauce and serve with whipped cream or ice cream. If making the puddings ahead of time they can be reheated in the microwave.

MEXICAN CHICKEN with BLACK BEAN STEW and CORN BREAD Matched with Höpt Soda Watermelon and Mint Serves four INGREDIENTS: MEXICAN CHICKEN 8 chicken drumsticks 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp of Mexican seasoning Fresh coriander (to garnish)
BLACK BEAN STEW 2 tbsp olive oil 1 medium onion, peeled and finely diced 2 cloves of garlic - peeled and crushed 1 red pepper - finely diced 1 tbsp Mexican seasoning 2 x 400g cans of black beans 1 x 440g cans of diced tomatoes in juice CORN BREAD 1 Cup of all-purpose flour 3/4 Cup of cornmeal or fine polenta 1 tbsp raw sugar 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp salt 2 eggs lightly beaten 1/2 Cup milk 100g melted butter 1 x 400g can of whole corn kernels drained DRINK MATCH Höpt Soda Watermelon and Mint (available in four packs from your local supermarket – RRP $6.99) METHOD: FOR THE MEXICAN CHICKEN 1. Put oven on and heat to 180°C 2. Mix the chicken, oil and Mexican seasoning together in a roasting dish 3. Set aside at room temperature for at least 20 minutes 4. Add 3 tablespoons of water to the marinated chicken 5. Place into preheated oven and cook for 20 minutes 6. FOR THE BLACK BEAN STEW 1. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan 2. Add the onion, garlic, red pepper and Mexican seasoning to the pan and cook until the onion is soft 3. Add the black beans and tinned tomatoes and cook on a medium heat for five minutes 4. Season with salt and pepper and simmer until it thickens to a 'stew-like' consistency 5. Set aside and keep warm FOR THE CORN BREAD 1. Preheat oven to 180°c 2. Grease an 8 inch baking dish 3. In a large bowl, mix all the dry ingredients 4. In another bowl, mix the eggs, milk and butter 5. Pour the wet mix into the dry mix 6. Blend well - making sure there are no dry spots
7. Add the drained corn kernels 8. Pour mixture into the prepared baking dish and place in the oven 9. Check the cornbread after 20 minutes and test with a skewer. If it is cooked, the skewer should come out clean. If not, continue to cook for another 10 minutes or until the top is golden brown 10. Turn the bread out onto a baking rack, cover with a tea towel to keep warm
TO SERVE: 1. Ladle the black bean stew onto warm serving plates or bowls 2. Sit the chicken drumsticks on top 3. Garnish with fresh coriander 4. Slice the corn bread and offer at the table HINT: You can cook the chicken and the corn bread at the same time.

uildInsite, a unique platform for builders and designed with their clients in mind, is new cloudbased software created by Wanakabased Insiteful. It is an information portal that enables builders to store essential project information and provides a complete digital record of the building project to their client. The Building Amendment Act 2013 introduced new consumer protection measures that require building contractors to disclose certain information before the start of a project and present an 'Owner's Manual' to their clients on completion of the project.
Required information includes a prescribed checklist, information about the building contractor and contact person, written contracts, a 12-month defects repair period, guarantees and warranties offered, maintenance requirements and insurances accessible to their clients. If builders don't comply, they face fines ranging from $500 to $20,000. Insiteful's managing director and BuildInsite creator Lauren McKay says the project handover tool allows builders to easily meet the project completion requirements and ultimately creates a personalised Owner's Manual once the job
is done. The mandatory disclosure form builders must provide to their clients is simplified through BuildInsite, allowing contractors to set up a template for each job for free. “The idea behind the law change is to help consumers understand the building process. But builders have viewed it as a bit of a headache, as they have to deal with much more paperwork. BuildInsite allows them to tick all the boxes with one easy system, access up-to-date warranty information, and all the necessary information for each disclosure and project is stored in the cloud,” McKay says.

Hence, we have a social responsibility to improve the land that is on offer to us in a considered and responsible manner. From a base physical level, our site and home meet our primary needs of shelter, warmth and protection. But beyond that, our built environment contributes to the unique fabric of our city. While different sites have differing levels of importance due to their location, each successful

building illustrates a respect for the quality of architecture that surrounds it. Informing the unique identity and characteristics of our streets, suburbs and city as a whole. Each site possesses its own story and any architect or designer should be able to expressly articulate why that house is specially suited to that site. How their unique design response to the particular story and context of that section has been translated into a tangible and successful built result. When designing, I
often ask myself if the same house could be moved onto another site successfully. The answer should always be no, as if it has moved to the neighbouring site, across the road, or to another street, the contextual elements will have changed. And my design response needs to encompass these in order to achieve the most considered outcome. Looking around the city we are confronted with examples of residential architecture that have failed to consider the surrounding environment. Many such

projects are commercial or build led designs where density and profitability have been considered over context and subsequent homeowner comfort. If the level of design achieved on such sites is deemed acceptable then the energy, time and thought I put into my designs is wasted. In many instances they are prominent sections located within areas of the city that ensure the end result is being pitched to a market with means, one with an understanding of architecture and the value in which
design can play. So my question is why why when the opportunity exists to design and build anything, would we compromise? We are faced with once in a lifetime opportunities to develop such sites in a considered and respectful way. Those opportunities are now gone. As architects we have a duty of care to be designing for all end users as well as our client. These end users include future occupants of the home, as well as those who engage with the property from the street front – essentially anyone who
wants to form an opinion. Many designers throughout their career will strive to challenge and at time polarize with their designs, yet never so with such detrimental outcomes to the market and end user as we are seeing in some cases in Christchurch. While some may argue this can be a hard balance to achieve when the motivation behind the project is commercial, they are failing to recognise the value of design and the important role it plays in positively contributing to the fabric of a city. As a firm believer in context, the outcomes of such developments are a fantastic example of the cost of not placing enough emphasis on the right aspects. The work was challenging due to the awkward nature of the space itself and tight time constraints, with the current kitchen and some walls needing to be entirely removed before the exact template for the new kitchen could be determined. The resulting contemporary look kitchen is a space for their client to enjoy. It features a lacquered back wall and stainless steel benches with a mirror splash back, an island bench with Australian Blackwood veneer and stainless steel trim, and slatted Blackwood on the rangehood. The island itself was a test in engineering, with the Black Absolute textured stone top set on a blackened steel base, with a stone bench top extension supported by an angled blackened steel bracket. What’s happening in real estate… Spring is traditionally a time when homeowners who are thinking of selling put their homes on the market, and this year is no exception. Metropol caught up with Rebecca Toone, the number one sales person last year, and year to date at Ray White Metro, for an overview of the current market and some tips for vendors and purchasers…
