Meet Sandy, the new Care Manager at The Bellevue.

Ready to offer care without compromise.

For Oceania, great care is about building a supportive environment that feels like home. For Sandy, The Bellevue’s new Care Manager, there’s a simple way to tell when they’ve got it just right.

“Smiling and happy residents. That’s what great care looks like. Being part of the community and participating in activities.”

Sandy admits her favourite part is building bonds with the residents. “It’s great hearing all the stories of their lives and their experiences. They put their trust in us, and that’s a truly humbling feeling.”

What’s her vision for The Bellevue? An environment where everyone feels valued and included. “Happy staff means happy residents. It’s always been my motto. We’ve built a team who are focused on providing a more person-centred approach. But it’s also about the residents getting their say. It’s important they have an input.”

To learn more about our new Care Suites that offer both Rest Home and Hospital level care, chat to Sandy on 0800 333 688.

Festive buzz

Now that December has arrived, it heralds the o cial start of summer, and that Christmas is not far away. The signs of the latter are everywhere with truckloads of glittering tinsel, trees and baubles setting the scene in shops and homes.

NATIONAL MULTI-AWARD WINNERS 2013 - 2019

Christmas spending is well underway with many taking advantage of recent big sales such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday to pick up bargains for Santa sacks.

Predictions vary from group to group about the possible spend, and whether it will be up or down on previous years. They all agree, however, that many people are tightening their belts, and their wallets in the face of economic uncertainty in New Zealand, and globally.

Some are cutting back their spend on gifts, others downsizing Christmas dinner, and yet others are carrying on as they have always.

People are what matter, not possessions, especially when experience has shown that a large number of gifts will end up on TradeMe, regifted, or consigned to a dark recess somewhere and forgotten.

with clay

Christchurch ceramic artist Janna van Hasselt was among 30 finalists in the 2022 Portage Ceramic Awards, for the 10th year in a row. She talks to Julia Strelou about art and life.

Janna van Hasselt’s journey into the arts began locally when she studied printmaking at the University of Canterbury. In between international travel and residencies, she took some ceramic classes with Canterbury Potters.

“I was instantly hooked by the versatility and materiality of hand sculpting with clay,” she says.

Almost a decade later it feels “amazing” to have her work on show amongst some of the top ceramic artists in the country.

Presented by Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery in Titirangi, the awards showcase the diversity and excellence of contemporary clay practices in Aotearoa.

The recent accolade is not Janna’s first. In 2012, she received a Fulbright Award, allowing her to complete her Master of Fine Arts degree at the Art Institute of Chicago. She’s been working with clay ever since.

“Back in Christchurch, my first purchase was an electric kiln,” she recalls.

“Now I’m a mum of two beautiful girls (Aliefka, pictured left, and Maeve, right with their mother), and I share a studio with my woodworking husband, who also doubles as my technical guru.”

“I was instantly hooked by the versatility and materiality of hand sculpting with clay,”

In 2020, Janna won the Zonta Ashburton Female Art Award which included a solo show at Ashburton Art Gallery the following year. Her ceramic exhibition Chromasill was pivotal in her career, opening the door to numerous public gallery exhibition opportunities.

She keeps herself “clay-fit” by teaching Centergy classes at Cityfitness and recently taught a class inside one of her gallery installations. “It was a true mashup of my two passions within one space.”

Janna’s piece Buzz Cut is what garnered her recognition in the latest

ceramic awards. The work is based on an understanding of what is possible with clay; hand-built shapes intertwine in an array of rainbow colours. They pierce and perforate the shelf support and spill out into the gallery space.

“I hope viewers will feel uplifted and delighted by the luscious mix of surfaces, colours, patterns, and forms.”

Janna’s work explores the idea of architectural failure, questioning how far her structures can be pushed before they collapse.

“I like to create a feeling of controlled chaos,” Janna explained.

Gearing up for a busy (and buzzy) 2023, Janna is working on several projects, including an immersive neon pink walkway as part of the CubaDupa festival in Wellington, a buzzing ceramic wall installation at MTG Hawke’s Bay, and some stacked porcelain sculptures for an exhibition at PG Gallery in Christchurch.

IN BRIEF

Since completing a conjoint BFA/BSc degree at the University of Canterbury in 2004, Janna has been awarded numerous opportunities abroad, including:

• a scholarship to study at the Rhode Island School of Art and Design

• an internship at the Edinburgh Printmakers Studio

• an internship at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, USA

• several artist residencies at Frans Masereel Centrum for printmaking in Kasterlee, Belgium.

After completing her Fullbright Award MFA in Chicago, she won the Walker & Hall Waiheke Art Award on her return to New Zealand in 2014.

Sue Heazlewood’s stunning garden in Ohoka is the inspiration behind her two recently released books.

Sue (pictured left) had always dreamed of the type of home that she’d love to have one day – a classic country house surrounded by colourful, inviting gardens. Her dream came true when she found a property on the outskirts of Christchurch and set to work transforming it into Tangleby Gardens.

Within these gardens is a special, elaborate playhouse that Sue, a mum to six adult children, has created for her future grandchildren to enjoy. While decorating the playhouse, she imagined a world of talking animals filling up the space with fun and laughter and possibly the smells of good food wafting across the garden.

For Sue’s passion for gardening is in equal share with her love of cooking and entertaining. With plenty of growing children to feed in the past, it seemed natural to her to combine all her favourite things into one. Hence the idea for Tails of Tangleby Gardens was born.

This is her first children’s book (another one is already under way), with proceeds going to a charity of Sue’s choice. In addition to that, Sue is in the middle of creating a ‘kid’s club’ online with crafts, recipes, activities and competitions, and her adult cookbook, A Table at Tangleby was also recently released.

She’s always been hard-working and very goal orientated. “When I am doing something, I am doing it to the fullest of my ability,” she explains.

This became apparent to her when she birthed her first child in 1991. “I loved being a mum so much that I went on to have seven children in six years.”

Sadly her second baby died at birth, on Christmas Day 1991.

“I was fortunate enough to have twins, a boy, and a girl, three years later on Christmas Day. Christmas is always special with Emma’s ashes under the tree, and a traditional gingerbread birthday cake.”

Life changed dramatically in 2007 when Sue was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. She found it di cult not being able to work or do many everyday activities. The condition took control of her life, creating a huge strain on her mental and physical state.

“I went from being a very capable person to a person that felt quite worthless,” she remembers.

“The landscaping began with mature trees being bought in as I felt I didn’t have time to wait for them to grow. I wasn’t getting any younger,” she laughs.

Life was a little lonely, so she decided to try online dating, and was “fortunate to meet an amazing man that I am now engaged to”.

The pair met for co ee and discovered each had been married for 25 years, and each had six children.

“His love of gardening has developed over the past few years, so now we both share the same passion,” says Sue.

When her garden proved too small, Sue bought a neighbouring property, subdivided the house o , and kept the extra 5500m2 to add to her existing garden. She plans to start developing it in early 2023.

A TABLE AT TANGLEBY Gardens aren’t her only forte.

In 2019, Sue saw an opportunity in the property market to purchase earthquake damaged homes, repair, renovate and then on-sell them.

“I was able to turn the houses around in six weeks from settlement to being back on the market again,” she recalls, adding it would be totally unachievable now with current supply chain issues.

“It was lucrative, but unrewarding and stressful. I needed something else!”

THE NEXT CHAPTER

By 2011 her marriage had deteriorated, and after her divorce Sue started looking for a forever home. “I was after a big garden that I could develop myself.

“While holidaying in Sydney, one of my sons phoned me and said that he had found the perfect home for me on the outskirts of Christchurch.”

The new home and undeveloped land around it proved perfect for her. Sue signed on the dotted line, moved in and started developing her dream garden.

While holidaying, it dawned on her to use her grandchildren’s playhouse as the scene for a children’s book. “I could bring in my love of cooking and combine a chapter book with recipes.

“My obsessive-compulsive personality came into play. As soon as the children’s book was completed I had so many recipe ideas floating around in my head that I decided to write an adult recipe book and do all the photography in my home and around the garden.”

As they say, the rest is history.

Oamaru

A ART, FORRESTER

GALLERY Housed in a spectacular neo-classical building, Forrester Gallery is a piece of art itself, when you walk between the large columns and into the gallery, you‘ll see local art, historic art or an educational lecture being put on, depending on when you visit.

B BAY, FRIENDLY BAY

The small harbour in Ōamaru town overlooks Friendly Bay. Nearby is a playground with a balance park, created by a Norwegian company, which challenges little ones (and adults) balance skills.

C COAST, CAPE WANBROW

Catch a coastal view at Cape Wanbrow. You can walk or bike and you’ll get to a lookout point where you can enjoy a far-reaching view of the Pacific Ocean.

There is much to discover in Ōamaru, let's start with the ABCs
about

Just head to the Ōamaru Blue Penguin Colony, says the Colony’s Science & Environmental Manager, Dr Philippa Agnew. There, you can be captivated by the nightly arrival of up to 400 Little Blue Penguins (Kororā) from the sea to their nests, in a former quarry in the Ōamaru Harbour.

“The Colony is only five minutes from the township of Ōamaru, and was established in the early 1990s following successful e orts to protect the penguins,” Philippa explains.

“Visitors to the Colony can either visit during the day to see inside some penguin nests or attend the main attraction in the evening and watch the penguins waddle up a gentle slope into the colony and head o to their nests.

“A special treat is then seeing the activity as the penguins interact with each other; feeding their chicks, nest building, and calling to each other.” Weekly monitoring of the penguins, since the colony’s establishment, has documented the steady growth of the population, from 33 breeding pairs in 1994 to 270 in 2022.

“The growth is the result of hard work from our organisation, to reduce predation by introduced mammals, create penguin habitat, and reduce any disturbance to the penguins. Visitors contribute to this important work as the research and conservation work carried out by the colony is all fully funded by ticket revenue, adds Philippa.

GEOPARK

glorious

The Waitaki District is a diverse region with a range of interesting landscapes, culture, heritage, wildlife, hiking and biking opportunities, and food and drink. All of these experiences are unified together within the Waitaki Whitestone Geopark, an area so special that the geopark is aspiring to achieve UNESCO status and is only one step away, explains Tourism Waitaki General Manager Philippa Agnew. “The Waitaki region has diverse geology, and many interesting and varying geological features form a ‘trail’ for you to see and explore,” she says.

“The Te Kaihīnaki/Moeraki Boulders are massive rock spheres eroding from a coastal outcrop. At Ōmarāmā, there are the eroding badlands of clay cli s, while near Duntroon are the huge limestone hummocks of Elephant Rocks. “There are fossils in the limestone and other rocks and the challenge is to find them. “In situ” fossils – the partial remains of whales -can be seen in the limestone at Anatini and Waipata/Earthquakes near Duntroon. “These are stunning unique geological sites that take the viewer’s imagination back through time.” Phillippa says that the importance of geosites is that they allow the exploration of volcanic remnants and the discovery of the past inhabitants of these places, from microscopic diatoms to giant prehistoric penguins.

Billionaires dominate the world news, yet they’re outnumbered nearly 10-to-1 by a fast-growing global elite of highly influential movers and shakers, who boast US $100 million or more in investable assets.

The newly released CentiMillionaire Report, by UK firm Henley & Partners, is about the ‘super-wealthy’. In the late 1990s, US $30 million was considered the fortune needed to meet this definition. Asset prices have risen significantly since then, making US $100 million the new benchmark.

The USA is home to 38 percent (9730) of global centi-millionaires, despite constituting only four percent of the world’s total human population. The big emerging

markets of China and India follow in second and third place, with populations of 2021 and 1132 centi-millionaires, respectively. They rank significantly higher than the main European markets, with the UK in fourth place (968) followed by Germany (966).

Switzerland ranks sixth on the list, followed by Japan, Canada, Australia and Russia, making up the top 10.

According to the report, there appears to be no set path to attaining centi-millionaire status. Some inherited their wealth, and others worked their way up. While a

growing number of younger entrepreneurs are newcomers to the club, Baby Boomers still tend to dominate the centi-millionaire circle.

The fastest growing market for centimillionaires over the next decade is forecast to be Vietnam, with other countries predicted to enjoy exceptional growth including New Zealand (72 percent) and Australia (60 percent).

The way to sell

Your best investment is in yourself.

If you’re a salesperson looking to grow your expertise, new to the industry, after e ective sales betterment, or trying to sell a complex product or service, The Sales Suitcases should be your next investment.

Selling can be hard, and buyers have become more sophisticated over the years, says Christchurch owner Di Murphy. “The Sales Suitcases can help you to lead those buyers to a solution, not with the solution.

“Consumer relationships and the sales experience have become more important than ever and so the interactive consultative selling skills o ered by The Sales Suitcases are essential.”

Di says the a ordable and cost-e ective package contains five sections with 30 short videos, focusing on the factors needed to become an excellent salesperson. “These include a critical reflection of yourself and your brand, customer alignment, making the best first impression, handling objections, making sales, and retaining those loyal clients.”

She adds that the informative videos, all less than 10 minutes long, are easy to integrate into the day. Each video follows a comprehensive workbook, then closes with a practical task to perfect skills.

“They are not just for individuals. Companies can purchase and use them for their teams too.”

The perfect foundation to close more deals and make thousands of dollars more in revenue regardless of the industry you are in, The Sales Suitcases for salespeople delivers practical advice from Global Sales Training Experts. To touch base with Di, email enquire@thesalessuitcases.com.

Making social simple

There is no denying that digital advertising space can be confusing and sometimes intimidating.

Knowing exactly where to spend your hardearned dollars can be a tricky hurdle to traverse. During the the past few weeks, Facebook (now known as Meta) has laid o 11,000 employees.

After 18 years of consistent growth, this is the first time in Meta’s history that they have seemingly taken a step backward. For a long time, Facebook has dominated the social media space, acquiring Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014.

More recently, social media platform TikTok has disrupted the space, taking advertising dollars away from Meta, forcing this drastic change internally.

Moving forwards to next year, I believe we will see a large shift in digital advertising, with advertisers spending less with Meta while confidence is low. The shift may be investing in other digital advertising platforms, such as Google or TikTok, or into other channels such as print.

It is surprising to find a client (at least in my experience) who hasn’t had some sort of di culty with the ins and outs of social media advertising.

It can be a confusing space to get your head around, so if you do need some advice, feel free to call me.

Agile workspaces

Modern workplaces have evolved significantly during the past three years, catering for di erent work styles, hours and needs. Enter the hybrid – or agile –workplace.

Essentially these digitally enhanced spaces support hybrid work forces and also new work styles.

To support those environments, today’s workplace demands require a new approach to organising and right-sizing business real estate, whether you need to bring everyone back, just a few, or to implement a customised hybrid programme.

Why go agile? Recent research showed that many businesses globally are using as little as 20 percent of their o ce space, now that more people are remote working. found to be the wrong size, or not designed e ciently, indicating huge ine ciencies in use and related costs.

Ricoh NZ designs, configures and rolls-out digital workspaces, enabling business teams to collaborate e ectively and get more out of their day, wherever they work. This also makes it easier to engage with customers remotely using Microsoft Teams and Zoom technology.

It’s not only about big ideas and it’s not only about thinking outside the square. Small ideas are just as powerful. To find out how to achieve big leaps through small steps, give me a call on 021 675 873.

Employees or not?

When was the last time

took an Uber?

The primary reason you did was probably because a ride was available at an acceptable, agreed price, and probably cheaper than the established taxi companies. That is the free market in operation. If I have a product or service that I believe there is a demand for, I should be allowed to test my theory - in the marketplace.

Not so the Employment Court. The Chief Judge recently ruled on a claim brought by a couple of Uber drivers, claiming that they were employees, and not independent contractors. The judge decided - on the specific facts before her - that this group were employees. That means they are entitled to the minimum wage for hours worked, sick leave, bereavement leave, holiday pay, and so forth and so on. Uber have said they will appeal this decision.

Firstly the Court has always ruled on this issue. It’s common for employers to try and get around employment law by calling certain workers independent contractors. Apart from some cost savings, the huge advantage is the ability to terminate the contract with or without notice, and with no fear of a personal grievance. Back to the Uber drivers. They freely made a choice to use their vehicle to try and earn some additional income, because they needed that extra income. With limited options, they used what assets they had, such as a smaller older car, and what time they had, to earn a lawful living. So if the next time you take an Uber and the price has significantly gone up, you will know that the appeal has failed, and Uber drivers are now employees.

Necklace layering is not a new art form, having become somewhat normal during recent years with increased interest in jewellery stacking. To date ring stacking has been to the fore, however catwalk and other fashion shows are now leading the way with layering necklaces and also brooches.

Men and women are embracing the trend.

Many fashion stylists recommend less is best, however how many necklaces you layer will depend on the look you want to achieve.

Pearls and delicate chains work well for more elegant styles, while chunky chains, and lots of them, tell a completely di erent story.

Chains are more masculine, yet some of America’s top actors, musicians and entertainers are right into donning layers of pearls, and also sparkling gemstones.

This time of year is fun and festive, but also busy and full on. Social calendars are often full, and healthy routines are usually a distant memory.

Indulging is normal around the silly season, so it is good practice to keep a few healthy habits close by. Our liver especially can take a big hit this time of year. The liver works hard to cleanse the body of all those threatening ‘liver loaders’ which include alcohol, fried foods, sugar, ca eine and also refined carbohydrates.

HERE ARE SOME WAYS IN WHICH THE UNICHEM CASHEL PHARMACY SUGGESTS YOU CAN SUPPORT YOUR LIVER:

• Drink enough water throughout the day (aim for 30ml per kg / body weight)

• Add more green leafy vegetables to your diet. They are high in B vitamins which help with detoxification.

• Increase consumption of

sulphur-based foods which also help your liver detoxify. These includes eggs, broccoli, spinach garlic, onion, and kale.

• Minimise alcohol. When drinking, have a glass of water between each alcoholic drink.

• Try and keep co ee to one per day.

• Drink a green breakfast smoothie to stimulate the liver to release toxins.

• Cellulite

• Daily longterm ca eine consumption

• Drinking alcohol daily

RELIEVES FATIGUE – Opt for a glass of water if you feel tired or sluggish. Drinking water can help the body function better.

IMPROVES MOOD – Lessen mood swings by increasing your water intake. Urine is a key indicator: the lighter the colour, the better the hydration.

HELPS WITH HEADACHES & MIGRAINES – Both of these can be triggered by

dehydration. Consuming plenty of water has been found to provide relief from and help reduce the intensity and length of headaches.

AIDS IN DIGESTION & CONSTIPATION – Water, especially warm water, is good for digestive health. Drinking it assists with improving the function of your gastrointestinal tract by helping break down food properly, and by promoting regular bowel movements.

live and listen

In New Zealand, one in six of all adults suffer hearing loss. Over the age of 60, 50 percent of people have hearing loss, while over the age of 80, that becomes 93 percent.

Presbycusis, or ‘Old Hearing’ is inevitable, but it doesn’t have to become the drawback of your life. At Hear Again, your ears will be looked after by top clinicians, helping you get back to life and listening as normal. The New Zealand owned and operated clinic provides only the best service, evidenced by its recent milestone of 100 5-Star Google Reviews. Business owners Steve and Samantha Foster say their mission is to “improve the hearing of people through excellence in client care”.

Steve, an NZAS Audiometrist himself, explains how as presbycusis develops, sensitivity to high-pitched sounds is reduced and harder to hear.

If you’re struggling to hear words with “s, t, f, h, k” and “th” or find speech is unclear or mumbled in those around you, this might be your first indicator of hearing loss.

Low-pitched sounds like background noise are still easily heard, however, and Steve says this becomes a “significant barrier to understanding conversation in a social situation”.

Gradual damage occurs within the ears’ nerve endings over time, so as we age, hearing becomes harder and more frustrating.

Hear Again are here to help. Free, noninvasive hearing checks to find the problem are available or delve deeper into the issue and its resolution with full diagnostic hearing tests.

For those su ering from tinnitus, a ringing phenomenon in the ears, the business has many solutions. Tinnitus can be caused by a build-up of earwax, in which case they o er earwax micro-suction to remove this for you.

Tinnitus can also be a symptom of hearing loss, and can be treated simultaneously with your choice of hearing loss treatment.

LISTEN UP

Simple steps with Hear Again can allow you to enjoy those special moments again.

Hearing loss can be e ectively reduced “by the use of incredibly discrete hearing devices which are almost invisible in or on the ear”, says Steve. With hearing aid demonstrations available, the audiometrists will guide you every step of the way, to a better life of improved listening.

Hear Again also services hearing aids, where clients can get them checked and retested to ensure they are programmed to personal needs.

Get all the best services, cleaning products and care from Hear Again, Shop 125 at the Hub Hornby, or browse and book online.

As we head into the festive season and thoughts turn to celebratory cheer, spare a thought also for the non-drinkers. non-drinkers.

cocktails mocktails

AND

Cocktails are a cool way to celebrate. You can make them by the jug full, and many may also be converted into non-alcoholic versions or mocktails.

The main di erence between a mocktail and a cocktail is the alcohol. A cocktail contains alcohol spirits and a mocktail doesn’t contain any alcohol at all. Mocktails often taste just as delicious as their alcoholic counterparts.

Fruit is an essential ingredient for fun summer cocktails and mocktails, fruit such as blood oranges with a gorgeous purple-red colour and sweet orange

flavour with hints of cherry and raspberry. Swap orange, or lemon juice for blood orange juice and savour the di erence.

A terrific option for larger groups is to make a punch, either alcohol based, or non-alcoholic. Better yet, provide both options for guests, and make sure they don’t get them mixed up.

TOP TIP: When plentiful, squeeze and freeze blood orange juice so you can enjoy all year round

COCKTAIL Blood Orange Margarita

A classic cocktail, the margarita was invented in the 1930s and traditionally blends lime juice, Cointreau, and tequila. This recipe makes approximately one litre without the ice, so use a 1.5 litre jug.

TIP: Try Himalayan pink salt to rim the glasses.

INGREDIENTS

1 1/2 cups tequila

2 cups blood orange juice 3/4 cup Cointreau

METHOD

1

3/4 cup lime juice

3 handfuls ice

Prepare glasses by rimming them with salt. Cut a notch in a lime wedge and slide that around the edge of the drink then dip glass rim into salt.

Pour all liquid ingredients into jug, add ice and stir until cold. 2

Pour into individual glasses, garnish with a blood orange slice. 3

MOCKTAIL Blood Orange Spritzer

This colourful and delicious non-alcoholic drink comprises three ingredients only, and is easy to make in individual glasses or by the jug full. This is the basic recipe for one glass, but it could easily be made a bottle at a time.

TIP: Substitute ginger beer or ginger ale for the alcoholfree wine.

INGREDIENTS

Blood orange juice, freshly squeezed if possible Lime juice, freshly squeezed or bottled Alcohol-free wine, white or rose

METHOD

Fill a large wine glass with ice. Add a fresh blood orange slice inside. 1

Pour in the blood orange juice, lime juice and your alcohol-free wine.

Stir gently, and garnish with rosemary or mint.

The dream of husband-and-wife duo Kiah and Ron, Indian Roots honours authentic Indian cuisine, just as they remember from their life in India. After struggling to find an Indian restaurant in Christchurch that lived up to the flavours of food they loved, Ron and Kiah quit their full-time jobs to start their very own restaurant in Halswell.

The light and open space is vibrant and welcoming, filled with fragrant smells of

freshly ground spices coming from the busy kitchen.

The menu is abundant in choice, with much-loved favourites including the Mutton Seekh Masala – Mother-in-law’s go-to flame cooked seekh kebab finished in onion gravy, as well as the Chicken Changezi – an Old Delhi special dish with tangy flavours.

Available for dining in or takeaway, savour authentic Indian food in the friendly restaurant or tucked up on the couch for a cosy night in.

For those with dietary requirements, there is no missing out here. All the curries are gluten-free, and there is a range of delicious vegan, vegetarian, and dairy-free options too.

Think classic Kiwi flavours, but with a cheesy twist.

The Cheese Bar has quickly become the city’s latest craze as owners Yanina and Terence take cheese to the next level.

From humble beginnings selling cheese toasties in their food trailer, the pair is now taking Christchurch by storm, with bookings filling up fast. Covid-19 forced their food trailer to an end, and Yanina and Terence had to look elsewhere without leaving behind their love and expertise in the food industry. When a restaurant lease became available, an opportunity arose to take their Cheese Bar idea from dream to reality.

Covered in cheese from dinner to dessert, the Cheese Bar menu serves a range of di erent cheeses in a variety of ways. Their famous raclette skillet combines meal and experience with melted raclette cheese scraped straight into your dish. “You won’t find it anywhere else” says Yanina.

For dessert, indulge in their cream cheese brulées, or share the ‘grande cheese fondue’. Quality cheeses and meats from France and Italy, along with Ōamaru’s Whitestone Cheeses, each dish is culinary excellence.

Working from home

If there’s one good thing that came from Covid-19, it’s the realisation that working from home can be beneficial in many ways, both for businesses and staff alike.

Whether it be via Teams, Zoom or something else, regularly touching base with colleagues is essential to a successful working from home situation. And the key to that being tolerable is having decent equipment.

Cheap earphones with microphones that bang against clothing and skip random words, and grainy mobile cameras that make you look like an extra from The Walking Dead, all contribute to making online meetings horrible

for all concerned.

When it comes to quality that won’t cost an arm and a leg, Logitech has you covered.

The Brio 500 Webcam is a new class of webcam that solves all the common video conferencing challenges. It sits comfortably on your monitor and includes features such as a tiltable body to let you perform presentations on your desk, a handy privacy shutter, automatic adjustment for light quality, and a built-in noise reducing mic.

Comfortable headphones are essential when meetings drag on, and Logitech’s Bluetooth Zone 100 is certainly that. The soft material ear cups and headband, combined with minimal 184g weight make these a pleasure to wear.

They bring business-grade performance, with a boom-mic that tidily flips up and down to mute or unmute, so no more embarrassing fumbling for mute buttons.

It’s time to upgrade and make yourself the envy of your company’s online meetings.

Christchurch CON C R E TING

While some fled the post earthquake fear and destruction, others rushed back to Christchurch, keen to use their skills to put our broken city back together.

Especially valuable were those who went in at ground level, laying foundations, repairing accessways, and fashioning strength where there was weakness.

One such contributor is Marley Hyslop. Director of ConCreate Christchurch, Marley began his concreting career 22 years ago and has worked in Queenstown,

Wellington, Auckland, and Australia. “After the earthquakes, I wanted to help rebuild my city, in all my travels I never lost my love for my hometown.” The team provide an intimate service, “We only do one job at a time, so the project gets our full attention, plus it is me that works one to one with the client,” says Marley. Driveways, paths, and patios are the teams specialty, as well as concrete floors and foundations. The

major focus is residential but the team are well equipped for commercial jobs too. The reward is the finished product, “Our quality of work is on show and the great results and feedback keep us us focused and riven to complete each and every job with the same level of integrity.”

According to consumer. org.nz, approximately 50,000 tonnes of waste is predicted to flood New Zealand landfills after Christmas week, close to the weight of the longdoomed Titanic.

One way to reduce your Christmas wastage is to opt for long-lasting Christmas decorations.

A TREE OF MEMORY

This year avoid purchasing cheap decorations from department stores that hardly last till next Christmas, instead repurpose polaroids or photo prints and use dainty wooden pegs to secure them to your tree. Or throughout the years as you travel to new places, collect items that would look great hung on a tree and save for Christmas time. Not only do these ideas use what you’ve already got, they’ll make Christmas Day, a special time to reminisce on shared memories.

GIFTS & WRAPPING

Consider wrapping presents in intricate scarves, to avoid the mounds of wrapping paper that you’d just collect up and chuck in the bin anyway. Or help your friends and family members to curate their own Christmas collection by buying them ornaments that will last generations. Such as the showstopping Little Star ornament from Swarovski.

TABLE SETTINGS

Shop for quaint table settings that you can use year after year. Fun ones that pop up after a quick search are wooden reindeer place names, snow globes with Christmas-themed settings, and crocheted Santa, elves, and reindeer.

PATIO

With more reasons to stay at home than ever before, there’s a big draw in turning your home into the kind of place where you can both relax and socialise.

One of the spaces where you’re going to want to accomplish each of those goals is your outdoor patio area. Whether your patio is flush against your home, farther into your yard, or on a balcony or rooftop, one of the key considerations for ensuring you can milk the most out of this space year-round is by creating protection from the elements. While sun and rain are some of the obvious culprits, wind and cold can be just as lousy for interrupting your shared or solo chill time.

To shield yourself from some of the wind on blustery days erect sturdy screens to break the breeze coming from prevailing westerlies or easterlies. Rather than attempting to block out the wind with a solid surface, installing a screen with slits or perforations will help allow some air to flow through and keep

it from having to bear so much pressure.

When it comes to the cold, keep a selection of cosy cushions and throws nearby so that they’re easy to grab should anyone get a chill. Ideally, investing in a pillow made of summer fabrics like cotton and linen and another set in wool and fleece will mean that there is always a suitable solution close at hand.

For areas that are more at the mercy of Mother Nature, a storage chest, bench or ottoman will keep your blankets clean and dry and it can double as extra seating in a pinch.

Other handy things that can add to the practicality, look and ambience of your outdoor patio space are a small bar for storing and serving bevvies and a shelf for stacking up some greenery.

Many of us grew up with the saying “it is better to give than receive” ringing in our ears.

As adults we discovered there is huge satisfaction to be had in giving a well thought out present to someone we care about. Yet, complications may arise, when we start to consider what to get and where to find it. No one wants to see their gift sitting pretty on TradeMe come Boxing Day, or worse, re-wrapped, re-labelled, and reassigned 365 days later.

kitchen facelift

Making the old new again is the fundamental philosophy of Kitchen Renewal by M.F. Turnbull Ltd. This longstanding company has been the go-to destination for surface coatings for more than 30 years now, and has been further enhancing its reputation for quality of late by working with coatings that are as eco-friendly as possible.

“When they are looking to refinish their kitchens, we know that our customers are very discerning,” says co-owner Monique Turnbull. “They want to know that the products we use are suitable for the job and as user-friendly as possible.

“We can certainly give them assurance. Finishes now are much more eco-friendly than they were even 10 years ago. There are also options for those wanting water-based products, although in that relation to those, there is often a small compromise on the quality.”

If you do have a kitchen in need of a fresh new look, you do not need to totally renovate it.

“A facelift may be all a kitchen requires if it has been well-designed in the first place and is functional,” says Monique.

“This saves money and, of course, volume going to landfill, and the energy used in manufacturing new.”

No matter what the current finish is –timber, lacquer or a pre-finished board such as melamine – M.F. Turnbull’s team can repaint it, to the colour of your choice. “You can have any standard colour you like

o any colour chart. If you have something di erent in mind, a specific colour or tone, we can work with you to make it happen,” she adds.

M.F. Turnbull doesn’t limit their refinishing and refurbishing to kitchens. They also specialise in furniture restoration and renovation. Unfashionable pieces can be revamped and updated. Much loved older pieces can be stripped, repaired and refurbished to their original condition.

“We can can update and revitalise virtually everything - from sideboards, chairs and lamp bases, to bedroom suites, dining and co ee tables, says Monique.

“Send us photos of your kitchen or your furniture with a description of what you would like, and we will send you an estimate. If you are happy then a time to meet and give a firm quote can be made,” she says.

As a permanent structure, both have multiple benefits, will add value to your property, and make your outdoors more usable and versatile.

A gazebo is a shade structure typically octagonal in shape, and often with a domed roof and symmetrical columns. They can be customised to suit if built on-site, or, for a quick fix, bought ready-made.

With a closed roof and solid floor, outdoor gazebos extend your capacity to host a multitude of events, or as a place to relax in your own great outdoors.

Structurally, pergolas are less cluttered and much more elegant. They may have a full or retractable roof, although many pergolas o er only partial shade with intermittent beams laid spaciously across the top, and greenery growing over them.

The main di erence between a pergola and a gazebo is the function of the roof.  A gazebo and a pavilion provide full coverage from the sun, while a pergola allows for sunlight to shine through its slatted roof. Typically, a pergola provides partial shelter and shade over a garden, pathway, or patio. Pergolas usually shelter seating areas or other landscaping elements such as walkways.

Swedish vehicle charging specialists CTEK say that regular battery charging can triple your battery’s life.

HERE IS CTEK’S GUIDE TO MAINTAINING BATTERY HEALTH:

• It takes 150−350A of battery power just to start a car, so nipping out on lots of short journeys, drains the battery because the alternator doesn’t have time to replace this charge. This is especially so if your car has a ‘stop/start’ function.

• Even a small drop in charge can compromise battery health. A car battery is fully charged at 12.72V. Below 12.4V, sulphate crystals can build up, degrading the battery and reducing its

• Driving around in your car will only ever charge your battery to 80 percent capacity. To top it up to 100 percent, you will need a battery charger.

Torque Talk

GENDER VS. VEHICLES

The music, style, cinema, and, of course, the cars of yesteryear have always been a keen interest of mine, especially the latter.

However, one aspect of motoring’s past best left there is the belief of what comprises a “man’s car” or a “woman’s car”.

For some time, a thought process has existed where a car’s size, styling, power figures or engine capacity dictated whether a man or woman should drive it.

An example of this could be when I owned a first-generation Mazda MX5. Despite it being serious fun, but not super-fast or flamboyant, I was often

accused by many of being a “hairdresser”.

Contrast that to women who own Ferraris getting stick from certain groups because they view the cars from one of the most coveted names in motoring as a “man’s car”.

It doesn’t matter whether you are a bloke and, like me, love small classic Italian cars, or a woman, such as my wife, who would love to own a Hummer, one should not feel turned o by views of what men and woman should and shouldn’t drive. Be true to yourself.

Members of the University of Canterbury Motorsport (UCM) club, (pictured), have spent 2022 building a 7.5-metre-long car they hope will break a record of 329 km/h currently held by an American university.

They plan to compete in Dry Lakes Racers Australia (DLRA) Speed Week 2023 at Lake Gairdner, South Australia in March 2023.

UC Motorsport Team Principal Kaenan Ferguson says it will be the first time a New Zealand university team has ever attempted a land-speed record at the event, and only the second time a university team from anywhere in the world has entered the electric competition class.

The club’s vehicle, UCM35, was unveiled in November. The race car features red, black and gold livery plus the number 35.

These were Burt Munro’s colours and number when at the age of 68 he set a new a new o cial

In a New Zealand first, University of Canterbury Engineering students, inspired by legendary Kiwi racer Burt Munro, are taking on a world land-speed record in a rocket-shaped electric car they’ve designed and built. Munro’s son John Munro and other members of the Munro family – who have given their support to the UC Motorsport team’s record bid – were among the guests at the unveiling.

The University of Canterbury has provided sponsorship, supervision, facilities and workshop sta for the project. The team has been using Wigram Airforce Museum’s runway to develop the vehicle in a safe environment in Christchurch.

Other major sponsors include Rodin Cars and Aruhiko Power Engineering Excellence Trust (PEET).

MAKE YOUR PREFERRED CHOICE AN ECO-FRIENDLY ONE

Based on the current 11th generation Civic, the FL5 Type-R is a far more grown-up looking beast than the FK8 it replaces.

The wheelbase is 35mm longer and the whole car sits 30mm lower and 15mm wider.

The body is 15 per cent sti er, the rear haunches are no longer added on and its new rear wing has been tested up to 270km/h to ensure flex doesn’t compromise your rear vision. The 19-inch alloys also trick you into thinking they are 20s thanks to what Honda calls, “Three-dimensional vision”. It also gets much wider 265/30 R19 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S rubber.

The K20CI VTEC four pot now produces 235kW and 420Nm. This is a 7kW and 20Nm increase over the outgoing FK8. Put this down to a refined turbo set up, a larger intercooler and a revised ECU. Naturally, the six-speed manual makes a welcome return and you can choose from multiple drive modes including Comfort, Sport. +R and Individual. The latter allows you to tailor drive settings to suit your personal driving style.

For some perspective, Honda NZ gave us the chance to experience the old FK2 and FK8 versions of the Type-R, on the

racetrack at Pukekohe, before the FL5. The FK2 was entertaining, yet quite harsh in R mode, resulting in the FK8 being the best all-rounder of the two older cars.

On to the FL5. Being a Type R, you get plenty of emotive red throughout the cabin and those red bucket seats are lighter and hold you firmer in place than before thanks to redesigned bolsters. The driving position is nigh on perfect and the digital meter display, exclusive to the Type-R, displays a rev bar and speedometer in +R mode which harks back to the Honda S2000.

Bury your right shoe into the firewall and the uber-sweet VTEC turbo engine gives a much angrier engine note at high RPM. Going through the gears is even more precise thanks to a lighter flywheel. That extra body sti ness does show and the steering is by no means any less direct. There was next to no fade on the brakes either. Also, the grip generated by those wider tyres means one can carry more speed through the corners than the FK8.

Five laps around Pukekohe in what Honda calls “Ultimate Sport 2.0” was epic fun. While we are yet to experience the FL5 Civic Type-R on the road, rest assured this latest Type-R vindaloo is the hottest yet on track.
