In May, Olivia announced she’s running for the QLDC mayoral seat. “I want to bring a diversity of thinking into local politics,” sheSinceexplains.launching her campaign, she has noticed the focus is always on one thing, her age. “I find it really interesting that I'm being called young all the time for this role. Because I'm not young. “I'm exactly the age of the average Kiwi.” She explains that this is problematic as it stems from a local government, where there’s very little diversity. “We need to diversify our thinking. If we always get people that are a similar age, similar gender, and similar background, this won’t happen.”

After leaving the profession, Olivia realised that she was in a position to speak out, and she did. “I was afraid for my personal safety, but I think that if you don’t speak up, when you see wrongdoing, then you’re just enabling it.” She took to LinkedIn to share her own experiences. She hopes that her campaign will inspire other young women to step up and become leaders. “I hope to get younger people thinking, hey, that could be me, that could be me running for council, that could be me running for leadership positions.”Whateverher own outcome, Olivia believes that it will be worth it if she motivates other young leaders to come forward. “If it gets a new generation engaged in local democracy, then then that is exactly what we all need.

She and her family housed and assisted the woman and her mother to safely integrate into society. When asked about the future, Olivia says she would like to see brilliant women putting themselves forward for leadership roles and not feeling as though they have to talk themselves out of it. “I have a daughter, and I'm trying to lead the path for her.”

Olivia believes that people are focusing on her age because she “looks di erent to your typical mayor”. “I think the average age for a mayor in New Zealand is 65. And it's [the role] overwhelmingly dominated by men.”

Plant or chattels of a business are usually termed “Tangible Assets” in the sale/purchase process. Usually a Tangible Assets list is attached to the agreement, or there is a clause in the agreement requiring the Vendor to supply a list to be approved by the Purchaser as part of the process. A Purchaser should check the list to ensure all items expected to be included are there. The Vendor needs to ensure the items on the list are in good working order – a Purchaser may reject any item which doesn’t meet this requirement. A Purchaser may undertake a pre-settlement inspection of a business, and at that time should check that the Tangible Assets are in the condition expected (as previously viewed). The Purchaser should contact their solicitor and the Business Broker involved in the sale to resolve any problem. A Vendor should make it clear if any Tangible Assets seen in the business are not included in the sale (e.g. some motor vehicles). An agreed list of Tangible Assets normally clarifies that.

T he decisionAuthorityRelationsEmploymentrecent involving Olivia Farrelly and Advance O ce Products highlights the need for good employment law advice.Olivia was interviewed twice, then o ered a job to provide customer support, mostly by phone. Two weeks later, Advance became concerned with her phone manner, and felt that they might be losing business because of it. They said they had not known, when employing Olivia that she had a noticeable stutter, and believed she should have told them about it because she knew there was a lot of telephone work in the role. Olivia said she’d stuttered all her life but it was only an issue on telephone calls (and not conversations).general Advance dismissed Olivia after meeting with her, relying on the 90 day trial period. Olivia challenged her dismissal, arguing the only reason she was fired was for a medical condition (her stutter), and that was unlawful discrimination. The Authority agreed, awarding her almost $22,000 in compensation and lost wages. What went wrong? This decision shows there are limited grounds to challenge a dismissal under the 90 day trial period, and there is no way an employer can know them all.A short phone call to a good employment lawyer would have immediately rung alarm bells, and would have been a lot cheaper than $22 grand. Feel free to call me for no-obligation advice, if you have an employment issue. 244 1810 03 355

A significant global finding gathered from hair salon owners during the pandemic is an increase in allergic reactions amongst those who had previously tested positive for Covid-19. What women miss most when shopping for clothes in large department stores is the personal touch; when there’s little care or interest shown, it can be a negative experience.

T hough still no o cial research into Covid-19’s long-term e ects on the immune system or on the development of allergies, it does highlight the vital need for regular patch testing prehaircolouring, as already practised in the UK.

I

University of Canterbury’s School of Product Design came aboard three years ago to help Lisa develop an innovative solution for an easy testing method. Testing can happen either in-salon or be delivered to the customer’s door, saving time for both salons and their customers.Thecustom-made kits test for any allergic reaction response 24 to 48 hours before colouring, with all tests and results recorded so salons can advise clients when their next test is due. “Our goal is to reduce the risk of an allergic reaction and avoid unnecessary discomfort. Safety should be paramount. Testing is critical to ensure client safety,” Lisa says. Email info@colourmesafe.co.nz or call 021 480 474.

From supporting record-breaking athletes at the Tokyo Olympics in 2022, to researching concussion risks in junior rugby through its nationwide branches, Pacific Radiology has long been committed to the health, wellbeing and success of New Zealand’s sportsExpandingpeople. its services further to meet the growing demand in Canterbury for injury related services, Pacific Radiology’s Canterbury Regional Manager, Adrianne Hayes, notes that the new branch will also provide specialised imaging treatment procedures for assisting with a patient’s injury recovery plans.

“By working closely with referring healthcare practitioners as part of a patient’s treatment and recovery healthcare plan, our specialist radiologists can perform highly e ective ultrasound guided musculoskeletal procedures which have the potential to negate more invasive surgery,” says Adrianne Hayes. Thenew Christchurch Metro clinic accepts patient referrals from across the region and is open Monday to Friday, 8.00am – 5.00pm. Appointments can be made easily through the Pacific Radiology contact centre on 0800 869 729 or patients with an X-ray referral can simply walkin without an appointment.

COMMITTED TO HEALTH AND WELLBEING

I deally located on the ground floor of 136 Moorhouse Ave and opposite the new Parakiore Recreation and Sports Centre currently in development, Pacific Radiology’s new Metro branch complements an existing range of surrounding sports related services. These include physiotherapists, podiatrists, sports medicine specialists and other medical practitioners.ThisnewMetro branch will play an essential role in diagnosing and supporting the treatment of sports related as well as accidental injuries. By using leading ultrasound, X-ray and Conebeam CT technology the highly experienced clinical team at the Metro branch have the potential to diagnose issues quickly.  Branch manager Michaela Dawson highlights the importance of this new branch to the local community:   “Our Conebeam CT with its ability to detail high definition and cross-sectional imaging of smaller body parts, such as hands and feet, make injury diagnosis that much easier in these more complicated body parts,” she explains.

Cantabrians now have more choice for sports and muscle injury treatment with the recent opening of Pacific Radiology’s latest Metro Branch in Christchurch, specialising in sports and musculoskeletal imaging.

There is a large vegetarian o ering too. Dalchini at 88 High Street, Leeston, is open seven days – lunch Tuesday – Sunday 11.30am – 2.00pm; dinner every day 4.30pm – 9.00pm. They cater for both dine-in and takeaway, and home delivery is available. Call 03 420 0031. Cinnamon is commonly used both in the preparation of Indian and curry dishes and in spice mixes. It is one of the five basic whole spices in Indian cooking and its earthy and peppery flavour adds a sweet yet spicy taste to both sweet and savoury dishes.

there is a Dalchini “special chicken” dish cooked with onion and cashew gravy, alongside mint flavours and the chef’s secret Nawabi spice recipe. The full selection is a mind-blowingly comprehensive mix of both recognisable and beloved Northern and Southern Indian dishes (of course Butter Chicken features), and less well-known fare (Chicken Do Piyaza or Lamb/Beef Balti). All wonderful flavours available as mild or medium and served with Basmati rice.

PROSCONS A hot soak can help relax muscles, relieve pain and tension, and increase circulation. Soaking for 20 minutes before going to bed may help you relax, de-stress and sleep better. Great for warming up in cold weather. Can be set up inside or outdoors. Electric and wood-fired models available. Fun and relaxation for the whole family. Need regular maintenance to keep clean and bacteria free. Will add around $1 per day to the power bill so use a fitted cover to keep heat in. Let your spa stay up to temperature. Heating a spa from cold to hot actually consumes more energy than it takes to simply maintain the temperature at a consistent warm level. Soaking for too long may be bad for you. Twenty minute sessions are recommended by medical practitioners, especially for people with heart or blood pressure issues. 0800 MGLASS (0800 645277) E: info@morganglass.co.nz &

RELAXAND Is a spa worth getting? That depends on how often you plan on using it. For most people, it is worth the money if used regularly, and maintained properly. Unused, it may prove an expensive waste of energy, and poorly maintained can pose health risks. These days numerous options are available, including wood-fired cedar bathing beauties, tough portable blowup models, and electric soakers with all the bells, whistles, lights and music you could wish for.

French country dining

T he classic French country style is a mix of rustic and refined décor that is inspired by the homes of the French countryside. Also known as Provincial style – which is often a more formal look – French country style features natural elements such as timber whitewashed floors, mismatched décor, aged furniture and exposed ceiling beams.

PERIGLACIAL BLUE

This dining room puts a contemporary twist on the traditional French country look with walls in Resene Quarter Periglacial Blue, a softly smoke blue with a touch of green. Complemented by the floor in Resene Wan White and accents in Resene Powder Blue, the room takes on a sense of pastel perfection that alludes to French country whilst carving its own path in the modern world. An easy way to kick start your design is with a subtle colour palette overflowing with warm neutrals – think creamy whites, pale blues and butter yellows. French country style is simple at heart and champions imperfection, celebrating aged décor and mismatched furniture. French country is all about layering, so be sure to incorporate patterns, including stripes and florals, into the mix alongside classic brickwork and wood panelling. For the French country fanatic, beauty is found in exposure and the obvious tracing of time through elements such as furniture. To finish the look, incorporate accessories that have a natural connection, such as potted plants and wildflowers. Sprinkle some pops of colour throughout the space with bright ceramics, copper elements and thatch baskets.

To begin designing your French country space, start with a basic colour palette of lighter wall colours, such as bright whites or pale blues. Resene Duck Egg Blue and Resene Merino work wonders to create a space that is as elegant as it is relaxing.

PROPS Dining table from Leopold Hall, striped fabric from Spotlight, olive tree from Mitre 10.

PAINT Wall in Resene Quarter Periglacial Blue, floor in Resene Wan White, bench seat base in Resene Periglacial Blue with Resene Quarter Periglacial Blue, dado rail in Resene Wan White, chairs in Resene Quarter Periglacial Blue, coat rack in Resene Sandspit Brown, bowl in Resene Sandspit Brown, DIY daisy paintings in Resene Periglacial Blue, Resene Quarter Black White and Resene Energy Yellow, large plant pot in Resene Powder Blue.

Create a state of nature in your home and bring the outside in with this classic French country design.

Sometimes the cavalry riding over the hill to the rescue isn’t accompanied by thundering hooves. I nstead, it’s the silence of clever thinking that delivers superior design, aesthetics, and eco-smart principles resulting in quality highperformance buildings, delivered pre-built to your site. If that sounds like a pipe-dream, given all we know about the supply chain problems in the building industry, then listen up. Lockwood Homes has a product that is di cult to beat. The company’s ReadyBuilt homes are built in a controlled environment, una ected by on-site delays. Each ReadyBuilt home is put together by a dedicated team to strict quality standards. The process allows for fast build times, while the robust build system is ideal for transportation to site. “The homes have been thoughtfully designed for functionality, beauty, and ease of use, while being cost e ective to transport. A range of pre-consented designs from 60m2 to 142m2 are available, or we can design and build a bespoke home, tailored to your needs,” says Sarah Smith, manager at Lockwood Homes. Since 1951, Lockwood’s solid timber building system has been o ering advantages in thermal comfort and control and indoor air quality. The exterior walls comprise a tight sandwich of solid timber and insulation which exceeds the NZBC energy e ciency requirements for solid timber homes by 50 percent. Wood is itself a natural insulator, and minimal connections between internal and external elements delivers even better heat retention.

Our new Vacationer Show Home is now open to view in Hornby! This functional design showcases the best of a modern Lockwood home in a compact footprint. 03 344 0299

Roses are often the most popular plant in the flower garden and unbeatable with their six months of colour, scent, and long vase life. The key to success with roses is water, regular feeding, plus a good spray regime. Summer perennials and annuals are the best way to reinforce garden colour schemes and the choice is huge with lavenders, gaura, petunias, lobelia, and dahlias in a huge range of colours.

B ut sure enough, three days of sunshine and warmer, drier soil and suddenly our centuries-old inbuilt urge to plant kicks in, we imagine the summer colour and the fresh vegetables, and away we go.

The spring garden

Record rainfall this July makes us all wonder if we’ll ever feel like venturing out into the garden again.

Success is not just flowers and vegetables; the therapy of gardening, taking time out, and the satisfaction of growing/nurturing is a real lifesaver in these challenging times. But first things first – check out the garden, make a list of what plants need moving, what gaps need filling with which plants, what needs feeding, and what needs trimming. Stick the list on the fridge, and tick o the completed jobs – ticking lists is ever so satisfying. The better the preparation the better the results so resist the urge to plant immediately and spend time on soil preparation which is the key to success.

ONLY GROW WHAT YOU LIKE EATING. Potatoes can be sprouted now, broccoli is easy and quick, lettuces handle cooler conditions, beetroot is happy from September on, spinach and silver beet are reliable standbys, and pak choi prefers the moderate spring/autumn Alltemperatures.herbscanbe planted now but hold back on basil and tomatoes until the frost risk is over, unless you have a warm sheltered spot like a glasshouse. A few smaller beds (raised is great) rather than one big area makes access simple and maintenance easy.

Summer’s coming so grow your own sanctuary.

LET’S START WITH THE VEGETABLE GARDEN, WHICH IS SO IMPORTANT AS WE SEE FOOD PRICES RISE. Dig the soil over to a spade depth, and mix in sheep pellets, compost, and real blood and bone (double the strength of the regular product). During the season, use a side dressing of a general plant food like nitrophoska blue, with an occasional dose of sheep pellets which are a conditioner/worm-encouragingfertiliser/soilcombo.

A healthy set of rubber can mean the di erence between staying out of that ditch and, well, not. With that in mind, here are a few ways you can keep your car’s tyres in tip top condition.

72 August 18, 2022 Metropol drivemetropol

1. Check Tyre Tread Depth

3. Tyre Valve Caps Tyre valve caps will keep out water and other road grime from getting in and damaging the tyre from the inside, so

Some of us tend not to be aware of our tyre tread depth until after it has passed, or failed its WOF. The legal minimum tread depth on a set tyre is 1.5mm but handling and grip can be a ected by less than 2mm so be aware.

2. Matching Set Having a set of matching tyres on your vehicle is highly recommended. A mixed set, even if they are from the same manufacturer can greatly a ect your car’s handling.

The eagerly anticipated allelectric Rolls Royce Spectre is fast heading towards completion, with the latest round of tests for the “electric super coupé” along the French Riviera.

IT’S ELECTRIFYING

While Rolls-Royce has created super-luxury motor cars using internal combustion engines, the concept of electrification is long familiar to the brand. Henry Royce began his working life as an electrical engineer, creating internal combustion engines that simulated the characteristics of an electric car –silent running, instant torque and the sensation of one endless gear. The connection with the marque’s founders is far deeper. When Charles Rolls drove a 1900 electric car named the Columbia, he made a prophecy: “The electric car is perfectly noiseless and clean. There is no smell or vibration. They should become very useful when fixed charging stations can be arranged.” Electric history store

S pectre unlocks the extraordinary potential of integrating a fully electric powertrain into our architecture of luxury platform,” says the company’s director of engineering, Dr Mihiar Ayoubi. “Our testing and refinement processes combine empirical data and human experience, intuition and insights acquired over more than a century to refine the motor car’s driving dynamics and character. “In coordinating this orchestra of systems with precisely defined responses to driver inputs and road conditions, made possible by the latest software and hardware developments, Spectre delivers the RollsRoyce experience in exceptionally high definition,” he adds.
