EDITOR LYNDA PAPESCH

Festive fun for all ‘Tis the season for all manner of occasions, get-togethers, and frivolity. ‘Tis also the season for over-indulgence, high spirits, and gifting so you’d better watch out, better not cry, better not pout, I’m telling you why, Santa Claus is coming to town. Throughout the Christian world, adults and children alike are counting

down the days until the fat guy supposedly slips down the chimney, and delivers a sackful of bounty; some of which will be well received, and some of which will find its way on to TradeMe the following day. For a few short hours, children and parents will be happy. Within a few days, many will celebrate again, cheering as the old year ends, and a new one begins. New Year’s resolutions will be to the fore, yet experience tells us that most of these will have passed their use-by date within a few weeks. Our team at Metropol will be taking a well deserved break, which will probably include all of the above, as well as chilling out at home and abroad, and enjoying what Christchurch has to offer. As usual at this time of year, there are numerous action-packed events to attend, and a dynamic vibe through the central city’s hospitality arena. Some of them feature on the following pages. Don’t forget the outer areas, the vibrant small heartland towns that also come alive during the festive season. In the meantime, thanks to all those who have helped to produce Metropol, to our readers, and our advertisers. We wish you all a happy and safe Christmas holiday break, and keep an eye out for our 2024 issue on 25 January.

The joy of

Christmas People celebrate Christmas in different ways, yet for most it is a “favourite” time. Here’s how some of Metropol’s 2023 interviewees will be spending the festive season:

Ja so nG unn

T

he week leading up to Christmas is my favourite time of the year. Our kids come home. And when our family is together... all seems right with the world. On Christmas Eve we take food to the City Mission, flowers to the cemetery, and light a candle at the Cathedral for the loved ones we’ve lost. This year, sadly, we’ll be lighting an extra candle. I lost my beautiful mum this year. I still can’t believe it. She found good in everything and the best in everyone. She made the best pavlova on Christmas Day and she put so much thought into every present.

6 December 14, 2023 Metropol

Re be cca Her favourite Christmas Carols were Away in a Manger and Holy Night... I’m not too sure how I’ll be when I hear those this year. On Christmas Day we will head out to our orchard, where we have placed some of her chairs and garden pots... and we’ll raise a glass to this incredible mother, grandmother, and great grand mother. I truly believe she’ll be looking down with a slice of pavlova! As we head towards this Christmas, I am aware, more than ever, that family really is everything. We must take time to create more moments. Because you never know how many moments you’ll get. Merry Christmas from me and my family... to you and yours.”

hristmas has always been a time of celebration for my family. I love gathering with my large extended family, and anyone scooped up to join us to spend the day enjoying each other’s company around a large table. It is a special occasion to come together with the important people in my life, and also remember those not sitting with us anymore; especially poignant this year with the loss of my young nephew recently. In the week leading up to Christmas I prepare Salmon Gravlax, a recipe taught to me many years ago by a Swedish friend, which has become part of our family traditions. In the last few years we have

returned to the nostalgia of our childhood and made pavlovas, alongside new potatoes, green salad, beans, heirloom tomatoes, ham, and turkey. My father showed us in our early years the importance of kindness and remembrance at Christmas. As children we would drive after lunch to deliver meals and gifts to people we knew with no family. On Christmas Eve dad would take fresh garden roses to all our family graves. In this time of celebration it is important to be grateful for all we have and pass on a little kindness and joy. This made a lasting impression on me as a young girl and I have tried to pass on this message to my own son.”

C

for another memorable celebration, full of warmth and connection. As an aunty, I can’t wait to see my niece’s face light up with joy as she unwraps her presents. In the true spirit of the season, my heartfelt wish goes out to all Cantabrians – may your Christmas be merry, filled with laughter and shared moments. Stay safe, savour the delights of the season, and indulge in the joy of being together. Here’s to a Christmas that wraps you in happiness and leaves you with cherished memories. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas, love from Miss New Zealand 2023, Georgia Waddington.”

hristmas is a favourite time of the year for me. It’s a mixture of good madness, work stress, constant events and lots of nostalgia. I think of it as a precious time for myself and my family. There are some deep non negotiables too. Every year in the week leading up to Christmas Day I visit my brother and my parents in law and lay flowers at their grave sites. It always anchors me and is a way of remembering great times together. Christmas lunch is always a family affair. I’m usually on pouring drinks, setting the table and I do the vegetables and glamorous looking salads.

hristmas for me is the ultimate joy. It’s a day filled with family, laughter, and love. In Christchurch, surrounded by my big, lively family of five siblings, my adorable niece, and my parents, it’s a festive gathering that warms my heart. Our tradition involves a laid-back Kiwi Christmas at a sibling’s or my parent’s house, complete with a festive round of Secret Santa. The highlight? Dad’s incredible roast lamb – a mouth-watering dish that defines Christmas for me. My sisterin-law adds to the feast with a dessert that’s nothing short of perfection. This year, the anticipation is building

love Christmas, it’s my favourite time of year! The decorations, the parties, and being able to spend quality time with my friends and family. I always want to make the most of it so my Christmas decorations go up on the 25th of November every year. As a kid I loved seeing the gorgeous trees in movies and that is still the inspiration I draw on when decorating! My trees are filled with bows, birds, butterflies, and baubles with lights draped through the branches that are always on to ensure maximum sparkle!

My beautiful sister Elise does the desserts, mum does all the meat dishes, dad gives us his thoughts and our beloved boys cook whitebait for breakfast. After the big day we usually head to Wanaka with friends and family to enjoy a traditional Kiwi summer. This year, after many years where he’s been in the northern hemisphere for work, we have our eldest son and daughter-in-law home, which is an absolute godsend. So I’m giving thanks for the year we’ve had, sending a silent prayer for many more years with mum and dad, and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas.”

I don’t love the pressure that people feel at this time of year to buy gifts and the stress that can add to a time that is supposed to be about relaxation and fun. So my husband and I no longer give or receive gifts instead we prefer to spend money on experiences and quality time with each other and our families. Like most years we will spend this Christmas with my grandparent’s where my nana makes a beautiful Christmas dinner filled with our must have family dishes, we play games, watch Christmas movies, and spend our holidays connecting with family and friends around the country.”

Celebrating a legacy T

The 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games put our city on the world stage, and early next year we celebrate its 50th anniversary.

he “Friendly Games” games was an event that, even after five decades, is still fondly remembered by many. The smallest city, to this day, to host the games, made big waves charming the rest of the world. Between January 24 and February 2, 1974, Christchurch hosted 38 nations, 1276 competitors, and awarded 374 medals. Christchurch was the first games to highly prioritise the safety of its athletes and spectators. Police surrounded the athletes’ village, nestled inside the student accommodation at the University of Canterbury. Christchurch was also the first to ask for commercial advertising to be allowed, and thus the first Commonwealth Games to conjure a sponsoring profit. On Friday 26 and Saturday 27 January, Te Pae will hold two events of connection and celebration, attended by former and current athletes. The New Brighton Museum will, for five weeks, display an extensive collection of memorabilia to mark the games. Wayne Hawker, president of the museum, found himself amazed at the amount of generous Cantabrians donating or loaning their Commonwealth Games collectors’ items to the museum. “We have shoes, a cheese board, a cigarette lighter, tie pins, cups, stickers, posters, and it’s amazing the amount of stuff, and you think, ‘Why did they even do things like that?’”

Image: Warwick Burke 8 December 14, 2023 Metropol

Starting 13 January, the museum will fill its cabinets with Commonwealth Games paraphernalia, from autograph books holding medal winners autographs, to the official pillow where each medal sat before being awarded on the podium. The 25 pounder field guns that saluted the late Queen Elizabeth II, and a 1973 Holden Kingswood which ferried athletes and officials will also be on display. On 28 January, gold medal winner Dick Tayler, and others involved at the time of the games, will speak at the museum’s commemorative function. “We are going to showcase just how much the Commonwealth Games meant to Christchurch, and the special bond it still holds for us,” says Wayne. At the time of the games, Wayne was 16, and his bike route to work took him past competitors on their morning runs each day. “That’s something that I’ll remember forever,” he says. The games logo, designed by then Christchurch-based Scottish migrant Colin Simon (deceased), is still one of New Zealand’s most recognisable and iconic logos. His simple yet complex design, captures five distinct elements: the country location, the year and the games number (the Roman numeral X for 10th dissects diagonally), the colours mirror Great Britain’s Union Jack flag, while Māori heritage is represented by stylised Vs used in carvings.

A ROYAL AFFAIR In her namesake park, the late Queen Elizabeth II attended the 1974 games. Prime Minister Norman Kirk and the late Prince Phillip were also present, along with King Charles and Princess Anne.

Warwick Burke - New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation announcer “I was an announcer in the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation in Christchurch at the Commonwealth Games. 3ZB had a temporary studio by the restaurant at Ilam’s Canterbury University, where many of the athletes were easy to approach for interviews. I also shot photos from the Press Box at the stadium on the closing day of the games.”

MUSEUM CELEBRATIONS Catch the New Brighton Museum’s showcase, starting 13 January for the following five weeks. Tuesday - Thursday 11am-3pm Friday - Sunday 10am-4pm

I REMEMBER....

René Hyde - Track cyclist winning bronze in the Team Pursuit “I was 19 at the time. Our events were held at the Denton Park Track in Hornby. I started bike racing at 17 and made it to the top in two short years. I rode in the Team Pursuit where we got a Bronze medal. I also rode in the 1000 metre Time Trial where I finished 4th missing out on a medal by a fraction of a second. I retired from cycling after the Games having achieved my childhood dream of wearing the fern.”

I REMEMBER....

A HELPING HAND Dick Tayler 10,000m gold medal winner “The Games being held in New Zealand was a huge plus for me, it was what motivated me. The 10,000m was on the first day of track and field and I just happened to hit the right buttons on the right day. It was the first ever sporting event [broadcast] in colour, too. Being in the Games before, I hadn’t really got the chocolates. This was payback time.”

During the opening ceremony, over 2500 school children invaded the field wearing white, blue, and red ponchos and hats. Together, they formed an immensely-sized NZ74 logo, the symbol famously associated with the Christchurch Commonwealth Games. Approximately 35,000 spectators watched on as the children used their colours to synchronise the logo. Lynley Tucker, attending Wainoni Primary School at the time, was wearing a blue poncho and hat, and still remembers the elation on the field today. “It was very exciting. I can’t remember what we did before or after, but I remember running on and being so excited,” she recollects. The chaos of so many children, naturally, ensued. “Amongst all the blue, there was one kid in white, who got lost and ended up in the wrong area,” Lynley added. A postcard of memorabilia kept by her mother Eileen Lewis after 50 years (pictured), shows the schoolchildren in their colours. Metropol December 14, 2023 9

Efficient real estate Is Christchurch a sound property investment compared with Auckland and Wellington?

“T

he quick answer is a resounding yes,” says Vic Raha, of Harcourts Real Estate. Why? It’s undervalued and comparatively affordable, he explains. Christchurch is an ever-changing hotspot; the city’s development provides numerous new attractions, and job opportunities, for its burgeoning population. With the average property price in Christchurch today at $741,178 (CoreLogic, October 2023), you need the right team to guide you through selling your property for the value you deserve. RAHA, a fluid collaborative division of Harcourts, operates under the real estate savvy of Vic Raha and Melissa Davenport. “Buying or selling? As agents, we understand market trends and what is required to prepare your property for sale,” says Melissa. From home staging to connecting you with builders, or facilitating a garden makeover, RAHA offers solutions, positioning your home for its optimum price. “Our strong, customer-focused ethos will put your mind at ease. With our highly commendable and efficient communication strategy, you’ll never feel out of the loop. Enjoy regular property tracking updates, weekly reports, and daily texts, in true RAHA style.”

R

unning now till 18 February, 2024, this free, family-friendly art trail features 30 unique elephant sculptures, with many telling a story of resilience and hope. The Laura Fergusson Brain Injury Trust is thrilled to bring author David McKee’s beloved Elmer the Patchwork Elephant storybook character to life, delivering a dynamic and vibrant art experience to the city’s streets, parks, and public spaces. These eye-catching sculptures, designed by professional and emerging artists, embody strength ® and courage, and symbolise the journey of individuals with brain injuries. Accompanying the trail is an educational programme that involved thousands of local schoolchildren, of which 30 schools have created their own elephant designs. Round up your youngsters and take them out during the weekend, or ®the summer school holidays, and follow the trail via the app. A fabulous interactive tool, the app also lets you collect rewards, and track your trail steps with its pedometer. “At the trail’s end, we’ll auction these amazing sculptures to support the vital work of the Laura Fergusson Brain Injury Trust, who are currently supporting 1000 Cantabrians with brain and spinal injuries,” says Project Director Robyn Medlicott. “They’re far more than just a pretty face, or trunk.” Members of the public can donate to support the trust via Elmer’s Givealittle page.

ARTISTIC STRIDES: JACQUI COLLEY BY DANIELLA JUDGE

J

acqui Colley is an award-winning New Zealand artist. She was born in Zambia and grew up in Cape Town, South Africa where she studied graphic design at Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Then she relocated to New Zealand in 1996. Jacqui began sporadically painting while working full time as a graphic designer. After realising how much energy her role as a graphic designer was taking, she took the plunge to commit to painting full time. She now exhibits her work

internationally and frequently collaborates on special projects and residencies. Jacqui’s recent exhibition at PG Gallery, To the sea, was created in harmony with her daily walks around Wellington. Her work is most often an abstract response to place, and this exhibition is no different. She incorporated what she saw at stop points on her walk into her abstract painting. Abstract expressionism is at the forefront of her practice. When asked about her colour choices for her pieces, she responds, “The colours

choose you, colour is something you feel.” Key to success for Jacqui is to not strive for perfection, “I embrace the risks as they arise,” she comments. When Jacqui received the esteemed Parkin Drawing Prize in 2018, the judge, Kelcy Taratoa, said he couldn’t take his eyes off her work. Jacqui is especially fond of this award as it gave her a strong foundation to reach out to galleries. Currently, Jacqui is enjoying spending time in her studio and is working towards a new solo exhibition.

HIGH PRIESTESS OF POETRY BY CELINE GIBSON

A

cclaimed Christchurch poet Gail Ingram clearly recalls the euphoria of seeing her first poem published in the Christchurch Press in 2014. “It was amazing. James Norcliffe published it, and I printed it off and sent copies to everybody.” From her early poems as a student at Canterbury University – “they were angsty poems, the usual stuff about grief, longing, and lost love,” Gail’s fierce passion for the written word kept her focused on her craft and her determination on publication. Gail graduated cum laude from Hagley Writers’ Institute in 2007, and in 2009 she joined the South Island

Writers’ Association (SIWA), and began entering writing competitions, both here and overseas. Crucial to her growth as a writer was the feedback, she received from competition judges. Gail’s debut poetry collection, Contents Under Pressure, published in 2019, received excellent reviews. In September this year, her second poetry collection, Some Bird, was released. It chronicles the experiences of a New Zealand woman during the last 50 years, and is partly auto biographical. Recurring themes in Gail’s poems are around her adoption, her love of nature, and her place in the world. Through her bird poems in Some Bird, she explores

childhood, teenage years, falling in love, marriage, motherhood, anxieties about being a “good mother”, and the maturing and aging process. Next year will see Gail’s third book, Anthology (n), launched by Pūkeko Publications. Gail explains the ‘n’ stands for noun to refer to the etymology of ‘anthology’ – ‘anth’ meaning flowers, and the book being a collection of flower poems. “The poems are supported by photographs I have taken of the flowers while on tramping trips.” Having had a sneak peek at some of those poems and photos, coffee tables around Aotearoa have a lot to look forward to.

any Hats have been a community theatre group for 10 years working with all different groups of people. This community enriching theatre company has the philosophy that the theatre is for everyone and getting those in marginalised community groups involved to help not only their mental health but to improve other parts of their lives, such as reducing feelings of isolation. The groups meet locally for two hours a week for free. Professional theatre practitioners are brought in to work with the participants and teach them skills such as movement, circus skills, acting, singing, and anything the group wants to learn more about. Two films have been made to represent the stories of the people who are a part of Many Hats and their experiences with different disabilities and othering. One called “boring old dishes” by the blind and low vision group and “head in a box”. These will be available to view at Lumiere cinema at the start of next year. Most recently, Many Hats have received a grant from the department of culture and heritage to expand their groups to include a group for migrants and former refugees, blind and low vision, and physical disability groups. They also have plans in 2024 to start a deaf group.

major exhibition of contemporary art from across Aotearoa New Zealand is on now at the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū. Spring Time is Heart-Break includes several artists from Ōtautahi Christchurch: Tyne Gordon, John Harris and Steven Junil Park, Priscilla Rose Howe, Sam Norton, and Luke Shaw. These local artists have produced exciting new works for the exhibition, using sculpture, painting, photography, moving image, and sound, that look both to history and the future, as well as how we relate to each other. Luke has considered a story of his grandparents communicating with Morse code while his grandfather was working on the construction of the Sugar Loaf radio and television transmitter in the 1960s; John and Steven have together created an immersive sound and light sculpture; while Priscilla imagines a vibrant queer future.

THE RIVER IS

IMAGES: Iain Cheesman, The River Is, 2023, tarata, apricot and elm divining sticks and balls of wool.

At Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum, Iain Cheesman’s foyer wall artwork The River Is will be on display until April 2024.

T

he River Is is an extension of Iain Cheesman’s recent exhibition, Nurture Nature, which was exhibited at Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum from 19 October to 3 December 2023. Nurture Nature celebrated the act of slowing down and looking. Within the gallery space, painting, sculpture, embroidery, taxidermy, and poetry sat together, creating a landscape for the viewer to navigate. Cheesman introduced birds as the focal point of his landscape, and as a bird watcher himself, hoped that the viewer would take on this role of nature observer within the exhibition. The River Is extends this concept, of observing nature, moving from birds to water. This work is inspired by a childhood memory in which Iain’s grandmother’s friend uses a wooden divining stick to search for water underground. “Where we live in Waiuku, we catch most of the water we use; it runs off the many roof structures we have. There’s nothing divine in this, it is just the act of interception. We catch it and feel like we own it, but then it flows through our fingers and is gone.” – Iain Cheesman The River Is speaks to the value of water; the value that cannot be commodified, measured, or owned.

The below poem was written for the installation.

Rakahuri my river is a snake taking advantage of gravity and all it wants is to see the sea it takes its measure of silt pebble, stone and the sandy loam yes it plays its part in the greater entropy as it widens itself near the sea the sea it will burst its banks in flood not ‘Thee Flood’ but smaller ones after we bulldozed and built and took away some of the estuary my river is a snake just wanting to flow free for all its length from mountain to sea one day it will, just you see and it will feel like an eternity.

A LASTING

legacy Pūtaringamotu Riccarton Bush is a 600-year-old forest remnant, set in the heart of Christchurch.

D

ue to its small size and urban setting, Pūtaringamotu is vulnerable to external pressures and activity. To increase its resilience, the Riccarton Bush Trust operates under a management plan to protect and enhance its indigenous flora and fauna, including mahinga kai and taonga species such as the Canterbury gecko (pictured right). The trust is currently looking at ways to identify and mitigate threats, such as climate change, water scarcity, and urban intensification. By adopting a more holistic approach to the management plan, indicators will consider a wide range of factors, such as cultural values, ecological markers, and local knowledge and values. Under the scope of the bush enhancement project, the trust is looking to upgrade vital infrastructure, and improve monitoring equipment and techniques, to ensure management efforts are, in fact, enhancing all aspects of Pūtaringamotu. Through recent funding efforts, the trust has been awarded $95,000 by the Lotteries Environment and Heritage Fund. The grant has been specifically

allocated to the upgrade of the fire/ irrigation system. As the size of the bush shrank in the 19th century, and drainage and urban activity increased during the 20th century, Pūtaringamotu has been slowly drying out and no longer reflects its natural swampy origins. As a result, irrigating the bush has been in place in varying forms since the 1970s. The current system is degrading, is costly to maintain, and is no longer meeting the needs of the bush. The improved system will be designed to cater to the variation within the composition of the vegetation present. Improved monitoring through sensors, and an upgrade in sprinkler design, will ensure the water usage is efficient while still meeting the demands of the bush. Further funding is sought for the Bush Enhancement Project, some of which will go towards other infrastructure to improve the capacity of the trust’s monitoring abilities. Equipment could include, but is not limited to: weather stations, soil probes and tests, improvements to the nursery, regular survey, and analysis of flora and fauna, weed and animal pest control.

Certain areas of the boardwalk have started to deteriorate; the concrete paths have become uneven, posing a tripping hazard. Additionally, the signage is outdated, providing visitors with limited information on the cultural importance of this special place.

The Future The Enhancement project aims to achieve the following objectives: Integrate Ngāi Tūāhuriri values, associations, and narratives into the design, art, entrance experience, and interpretation of Pūtaringamotu/ Riccarton Bush. Improve the track system and infrastructure. Develop the Grove area to accommodate larger groups visiting Pūtaringamotu/ Riccarton Bush. Provide educational interpretation that encourages engagement and participation.

Donate Now To ensure the future of Riccarton Bush, a total of $2.4 million is needed to fund the Enhancement project. Your donation can help protect, conserve, and enhance this important landmark for future generations.

magine if these daily activities required no more effort than one appointment at Lucky Pinn, to live every day with framed eyebrows, plump, pigmented lips, and smudge-proof eyeliner. Semi-permanent makeup is fast becoming a go-to, lasting two to five years and enhancing natural features to produce a youthful, radiant face without all that time spent in front of the mirror. Effortless beauty, satisfaction, and self-esteem are reflected from within, bringing endless confidence to fruition. Over time, the facial muscles drop which bring the eyebrows down. Corrective eyebrow shaping and tattooing will lift those first-look points of the face. A fine art artist, skilled in makeup and tattoo artistry, owner Pinn puts her passion into each client, with high-quality, non-toxic pigments in a completely hygienic salon. “It’s about selecting the right shape for the face frame and the satisfaction of a well-finished canvas,” Pinn explains. Offering a free consultation to create the shaping and framing, Pinn then offers a free touch-up session after one month for continuously effortless day-to-day makeup. Boost your lymphatic system Draining the lymph system is believed to help improve blood flow, circulation, energy, and the immune system, to relieve stress, and speed up surgery recovery.

I

t’s also credited with improving skin elasticity, digestion, weight loss, hormonal imbalances, and reducing cellulite, constipation, bloating, puffiness, and water retention. Lymphatic drainage massage involves bringing fluid stuck between cells and in body tissue to the lymph nodes, to be pumped out of the body. Massage practitioner, and company director of Me Time Wellness, Vanessa Krambeck says that in her native Brazil, lymphatic drainage is considered mandatory after any cosmetic procedure. “They have evolved the original Vodder technique to another level, combining it with some of Leduc and Godoy manoeuvers, to deliver more instantaneous and visible results,” she says. “It requires a deeper touch, so it helps with cellulite appearance and increases circulation in general, creating that ‘sculpting’ effect. “Think of the lymphatic system as the body’s drainage system, part of our circulatory system and our immune system in the large mechanical process that is the human body. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump to keep the flow moving, so when it’s impaired, that fluid builds up, delaying the body’s ordinary functionality, causing swelling, lethargy, tiredness, heavy legs, and inflammation,” she adds.

COPING WITH

STRESS Most people experience stress and anxiety at some time, yet just as your body has an automatic response to stress, it also has a built-in system to calm you down.

T

he ‘relaxation response’ helps you recover from the “fight or flight” response. It brings all your systems back to normal, and returns your body to a calm, resting state. The relaxation response also helps protect your body from health issues related to the stress response. Here are some of the strategies you can use to help the relaxation response kick in.

Yoga Mind and body practices, such as yoga, can help relieve stress, reduce anxiety, and boost your overall well-being. If you’re new to yoga, you may want to begin with a 10-minute restorative yoga session.

Meditation

Exercise and physical activity

Practising meditation may help reduce the inflammation response caused by stress, and also decrease anxiety. Start with five minutes of meditation at a time, and increase by a few minutes each week.

Breathing exercises

Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR).

Moving your body, even for 20 minutes a day, may help lower your overall stress levels and reduce tension in your muscles. If you can, get outdoors and take a brisk walk in nature. Belly breathing, also known as diaphragmatic breathing, is one of the simplest ways to relax. Breathe in deeply through your nose, allowing your belly to expand, and exhale through your mouth.

To do PMR, simply tense each muscle group in your body one at a time, and hold for five seconds. On the exhale, relax the muscles for 10 to 20 seconds before moving to the next muscle group.

BIKE Christchurch’s flat terrain makes cycling a great exercise option, especially when it comes to adding low impact cardio into your daily routine.

R

egular exercise, such as biking, helps prevent and manage a variety of medical conditions, and is also an environmentally friendly option. Hopping on a bike is low-impact, high-gain exercise. Biking is synonymous with numerous health benefits. Listen to your body and ride at a self-determined pace to get the best out of it. From boosting metabolism, to building muscle, and burning more calories, to improving overall body function, and strengthening the legs without overstimulating them, the benefits are well documented. There are other easily-forgettable benefits too, such as improvements to balance, posture, coordination, and a positive effect on cholesterol to boost cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of stroke and heart attacks, according to studies. It’s not all physical though. Cycling brings you back to the moment and reduces feelings of stress and depression. Awareness, mental clarity, they’re results of focusing on yourself, your breathing, and your goal on the bike. Cycling may also help prevent and manage type 2 diabetes, with a recent study finding that regular cycling can lower mortality rates for people with diabetes by 24% and, if continued for at least five years, can decrease mortality rates by 35%. If you don’t want to cycle, you can give your body a similar cardio workout, by opting for a rowing, stair-climbing, or elliptical machine. You can also run hills, swim, or walk.

Here are some of the benefits:

1. Weight management Cycling habitually, especially at a high intensity, can help lower your body fat levels, which promotes healthy weight management. Studies suggest that including sprint and strength training with regular cycling may temporarily increase your metabolism, and build muscle, allowing you to burn more calories, even while at rest.

2. Strengthens legs Cycling improves overall function in your lower body, and will strengthen your leg muscles without overstressing your joints. It targets your quads, glutes, hamstrings, and calves.

3. Good for beginners Riding a bike is fairly simple. If you have difficulty with a standard bicycle, try a stationary bike or exercycle. Start at low intensity, and increase as you build up fitness.

4. Lowers cholesterol A review of 300 different studies showed indoor cycling has a positive effect on cholesterol levels, which in turn can boost cardiovascular health, and lower your chances of stroke, and heart attack. It may boost HDL (good) cholesterol levels while lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

W

hen your visitors walk through your door early, or completely unannounced, you need to have a few tricks in the kitchen up your sleeve. Putting together a deliciously enchanting plate of food in just a few moments sounds daunting, but it can be easy, and can utilise the fruit and vegetables of the season. Cucumbers, in abundance at this time of year, together with some other pantry staples, make the perfect solution. Start with a base, before choosing your pick of garnish, or testing them all, of Metropol’s cucumber bites.

INGREDIENTS 2-4 cucumbers, depending on number of mouths

Optional Blue cheese

Cracked pepper

Hummus

Caviar

Cream cheese

of choice

Cherry tomatoes

Fennel

Parsley

Cocktail picks

Fresh salmon

Peanut butter

BASE:

1

Slice two cucumbers into bite sized morsels, and place on a serving plate.

2

Completely peel the outside of the leftover cucumbers. Dispose of the exterior peel, before peeling the rest of the cucumber downwards to make long, slightly transparent slivers.

3

Fold and thread your cucumber peels onto cocktail picks to form a Christmas tree and put aside.

SIMPLE FANCY:

CHICKPEA DELIGHT

Pipe a small amount of cream cheese onto each base, and garnish with a sprig of fennel or a caper.

Spread onto the base some plain or infused hummus. Top with chargrilled or fresh cherry tomatoes, and parsley.

CLASSIC

EASY, CHEESY

Cover your cucumber base with cream cheese and a piece of fresh salmon. Garnish with cracked pepper or caviar.

Pop a piece of fresh salmon onto the base, and cover in blue cheese to your heart’s delight.

FOR THE YOUNG ONES

Finish by piercing through the earlier assembled cocktail pick Christmas trees into each base. Make it extra festive by cutting some triangle or star carrots to top each tree.

Spread peanut butter to each base, and pair together to create a cucumber ‘Oreo.’

Calling on cucumbers R

efreshing, buildable, rich, and easy, a Greek salad is simply made for balmy summer nights. With cucumbers aplenty in Christchurch pantries currently, put them to good use with this tasty feature dish. Canterbury is home to many olive farms too, so buy local ingredients where you can. Crunchy cucumbers, tangy feta, briny olives, sweet cherry tomatoes, and peppery red onions come together to create one delicious salad. The best part, it’s completely adaptable to your tastes. Keep it classic, or step it up a notch. For more density, consider a bed of arugula, or toss with pasta shells or couscous. If you’re feeding a few mouths and looking to make a meal out of it, sizzle some meat skewers on the barbecue, warm some pita breads, and serve with tzatziki. Your guests can assemble their meal as they wish, with the Greek salad delectable on the side, or built into a gyro. Make the cucumber the star of the show with your own culinary flair. There are many ways to dice and slice cucumbers to add some excitement to the dish. Slim cut, rounds, lengthwise, strips, julienne style, and noodles – options are numerous. Alternatively, peel your cucumber for a cleaner look, shape out small stars or hexagons, or slice on an angle to reveal longer pieces.

GREEK SALAD – INGREDIENTS 2 cucumbers

Salt and pepper, to garnish

1/ large red onion, thinly sliced 2

Optional

15 cherry tomatoes, halved

Rocket or leaves of choice

1 cup black olives, halved or whole

Couscous

1/ block feta 2 1/ lemon, juiced 2 1/ cup olive oil 4

Pasta shells Capsicum Balsamic vinegar

METHOD 1

RING IT IN

RIGHT The first day in January is about making resolutions, and starting the year off on the right foot.

nvite family and friends over for a tasty brunch to celebrate new beginnings with these tips: To inspire feelings of rejuvenation, choose simple, yet bright décor and fresh flowers. Paeonies symbolise happiness, and good fortune, and lillies represent fresh life and also rebirth. Send out sparkly invites so your favourite people can make the event a priority. Make drinking Champagne in the morning more palatable by adding orange juice and turning it into a mimosa, or peach juice for a bellini. Grab pastries for the brunch menu, and pair them with classic eggs, bacon, and hash browns; your guests will enjoy the range of choices. Include pen and paper with each table setting. When everyone is settled in, encourage your guests to write down their New Year resolutions. Sharing them with each other will make each person more accountable. Keep your resolutions realistic and build in daily habits that will help you to achieve them in 2024. Set out mini gift bags filled with goodies from Boxing Day sales, to show gratitude to your friends and family for their company during the year.

LONG LUNCHING With summer comes endless opportunities to organise and host convivial long lunches.

S

et the scene with a few, or many places, depending on the size of your party, creating tantalising tablescapes to intrigue and excite your guests. In many instances, it’s easy to begin with a base. A few white candles, polished cutlery, and sparkling glassware can be built on, and styled around, to create an on-theme spread. Match the aesthetic to the guest list. A classy family gathering might be best suited to Hampton’s haze or enchanted elegance, but a fun lunch with friends fits a think pink or to the tropics setting. If you need ideas for styling your next long lunch, or you simply want an excuse to test Metropol’s tablescapes over each summer weekend, read on for plenty of inspiration.

Hamptons haze

Clean whites and blue tones make up the revered ‘Hamptons’ aesthetic. Often, it’s easily pulled together through pieces already owned, such as white tablecloths, tall candles, and wicker baskets. It’s an easy last-minute tablescape to create, just add some citrus coloured flowers, porcelain plates, and blue accent tea towels for that soothing, yet luxurious setting.

Wishing you a happy and safe holiday season.

To the tropics

Escape to the tropics with a tablescape that represents those balmy island nights. Use Tiki glasses and cocktail umbrellas for fruity drinks, otherwise the orangey-gold shade adorning a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Champagne is ideal to match the colour aesthetic. Think bright and bold hues of peach, pinks, and yellows, for floral decorations, glassware, table linen, and tableware.

Fare for fairies

From a simple base setting, weave fairy lights through the middle of your table, where delicate vases filled with wispy dried flowers sit. Embellish each plate setting with a sprig of lavender atop a faint purple napkin. For extra cohesion and a whimsical Alice in Wonderland feel, develop a menu that centres around petit fours, mini cakes, meringues, and bite-sized savouries.

Enchanted elegance

Crisp white roses, and tall candles and gold candlesticks burn a subtle yet sophisticated scent into the air. Be careful not to over do it. Place crystal glassware and the base tableware for a poised aesthetic. Choose one colour to accent, such as gorgeous greenery or budding lily bunches. A neutral napkin, wrapped in a small shiny ribbon, will make a great finishing touch.

Think pink

Forget that it’s the colour of the season, pink-themed tablescapes make a great baby shower, or best friend’s birthday setting. It’s simple too, anything pink or white goes, from the floral arrangements to the tableware. For a touch of elegance, opt for velvet napkins and gold cutlery.

Artsy abstracts

Think of ways to breathe vibrance into your tablescape base. Patterned cloths and linen, abstract china, candleware, and plant pots of different sizes can bring an excitingly interesting addition to a simple set up. Greens and oranges work nicely, and can be splashed with pink or blue for the adventurous. Keep it fresh and inviting by finishing with a few leafy centrepieces.

New year,

new kitchen

Studies show we spend more than 400 hours in the kitchen each year. It’s home to our tired selves, our just waking up and scrambling for a coffee selves, it sees the meals and mess we make, and it hears our late night chats in the light of the fridge.

A

space that provides such necessity deserves to look its best. As we walk into a new year, our kitchen’s face another 400 hours of wear, but a new kitchen means starting afresh. Think of those small alterations that need fixing, a modern and efficient storage system, or the benchtop and furniture that could do with a fresh lick of colour. MF Turnbull are experts in kitchen refurbishing, and as they celebrate 35 years in business, it’s clear they possess the experience and expertise to prove that. Labelled ‘kitchen renewal wizards,’ Monique, Murray, and their team can recreate a kitchen from drab to fab. Waking up and coming home to a new kitchen is one of the ‘little things’ in life that provides a huge, yet often unconscious, boost to ourselves and our home values. It’s like a big warm hug each time you begin cooking a meal in a beautifully polished space. Kitchens have been found to provide the most resale value to a home, so it’s not just a shortterm investment. Maintenance decreases, as does cleaning time in a kitchen that’s been reworked for your efficiency.

DID YOU KNOW?

We spend more than 400 hours in the kitchen each year.

Specialising in waterborne paint, stain, polyurethane and polished finishes on furniture and joinery, the team can renew the look of an entire kitchen with “attention to detail and a flawless finish every time.” In an overly ‘throw-away’ society, it focuses on recycling old spaces to look brand new, reducing what goes to landfill, and the time needed to vacate your kitchen for reworking. Upholding sustainability practices, Monique and Murray live by a reuse, repair, recycle ethos, and swear by the impact it has on reducing their carbon footprint. “Consumers do need to differentiate between businesses simply making a virtue-signalling token gesture for a competitive edge, and those who really walk the talk,” they say. As you relax in the sun this summer, dream about what a new kitchen could mean. A fresher look, colour, and a space much easier to clean. Even more, a room that you want to show off when hosting guests and parties. In the new year, bring your plans to life with MF Turnbull and take your kitchen to the next level.

YOUR

outdoors Indulge in the delights of your garden sanctuary this summer by elevating your outdoor experience.

C

onsider splurging on key elements that will transform your garden into an area of relaxation and entertainment. If you’re planning to host extended gatherings, investing in a robust table and chairs is essential. Picture an evening dinner party under the open sky, surrounded by lush greenery, with a sturdy table accommodating delicious dishes, and comfortable chairs encouraging lively conversations. When selecting an appropriate outdoor table for your garden, consider both style and

functionality. Opt for materials, such as durable teak or weatherresistant metal, that can withstand the unpredictable Christchurch weather. A well-crafted table will add aesthetic appeal. and also stand resilient against rain and sun. Consider the size of your outdoor space—choose a table that complements the area without overwhelming it. Pay attention to the design details too; intricate patterns or minimalist styles can define the overall look of your outdoor dining area.

MAZDA

Just when you thought the CX-9 was the ultimate luxury SUV from Mazda, we now have this. Called the CX-90 Takami, it is the new pinnacle of luxury with a Mazda badge. Is it any good though?

T

he $93,490 CX-90 Takami sits atop the Mazda family, not just in terms of their SUVs, but the whole range in general. A full seven-seater, its stance and styling cues follow the same design language as the smaller CX-60 plug in hybrid and CX-30. There are lovely cues such as chrome accents, 21-inch black and

machined alloys, and various subtle air intakes. All in all, the CX-90 Takami is a good looking car. The interior sports the full luxe treatment associated with the Takami badge, and all the quality which that implies. It is a delightful place to be, and everything you touch and operate feels so

much better put together than most rivals at this price point. The Nappa leather seats are uber plush, and the large centre console housing a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, aircon controls, and shifter, is within easy reach. Tech includes a 360-degree rear camera, heated and ventilated leather seats front

and rear, a panoramic glass sunroof, i-adaptive cruise control, heated steering wheel, a handsfree power tailgate, a thumping 12-speaker BOSE stereo system, sat nav and Mazda’s facial recognition driver technology. The latter of these means that every time you hop in, the CX-90 recognises your face and changes things like the steering and seat position to match your preferences. Interior space is very generous and when you drop the third and second row seating, the CX90 can swallow up 2025L of cargo, including under floor storage. The meat on the bones in terms of performance is a 3.3L six cylinder e-SKYACTIV G petrol engine with a Mild Hybrid set up. On the move, this serves up 253kW and 500Nm of torque, which kicks in low down in the rev range. Mazda’s Kinematic Posture Control or KPC keeps you level and balanced in the corners really well. It may be a high riding SUV, but on the bends, it corners brilliantly. Switch from Normal to Sport mode and it can certainly shift too. The eight-speed auto box shifts well, and the AWD system offers plenty of road hugging grip. Despite sporting a kerb weight of 2.2 tonnes, the CX-90 still feels lively and spirited in many ways. It’s not a performance SUV like some of its more expensive Euro counterparts, but for a car designed for brisk comfort, it is impressive. The pinnacle of the Mazda range is very good indeed. Those who want the absolute best Mazda can produce will not be disappointed.
