That Canterbury gained at least a small share of the $26.6 million Government funding confirmed recently for regional tourism organisations (RTOs) is heartening yet more is needed in terms of funding, collaboration and being proactive. ChristchurchNZ benefits by $1.5 million, along with an additional $400,000 on behalf of the Mackenzie District Council, while Hurunui Tourism receives a similar $400,000. pace may not be the final frontier it once was, yet the sun, the stars and the universe still hold a fascination for millions of people. Among them is artist Dick Frizzell, usually better known for his paintings and illustrations than his writing. Frizzell studied at Christchurch’s Ilam School of Fine Arts from 1960 to 1963, before a long career in advertising running parallel with his successful artistic endeavours. Kiwis have Frizzell to thank for pop art images such as Mickey to Tiki, the 4 Square Grocer, Daffy to Daffy, and many others as well as more traditional still life, landscape and portrait works. In The Sun is a Star, Frizzell combines his lifelong fascination with astronomy and cosmology in a colourful book featuring illustrations by more than 30 of his artist friends, including John Pule, Greg O’Brien, John Reynolds, Judy Darragh, Grahame Sydney, Karl Maughan, and Wayne Youle. Written with help from Samantha Lord, formerly an astronomer at Tekapō’s Mount John Observatory, The Sun is a Star demystifies everything from White Dwarves and Black Holes to space travel. Written with Frizzell’s hallmark self-deprecating humour, it is also infused with solid science and the sense of wonder he feels when he looks at the night sky. As he writes, “The universe —

and everything in it — is always expanding into tomorrow... What a scene, eh? More magic than magic. Magic, mysterious and beautiful. And here we are. On the third rock from the sun, figuring it out.” He admits to being interested in science since high school. “I remember reading about the Big Bang, and it grew from there. “You could say my interest in the universe parallels my interest in art.” The latter has firmly cemented his place in New Zealand’s art history, not bad for a lad from Hastings who started out thinking he was the only boy there who knew how to draw. “I was always that guy in class who the teacher asked to draw things on the board.” Pop art was his world in those days, and to a certain extent it still is, regularly interspersed among his other creations. “I responded hugely to pop art when I discovered it, I knew immediately it was my wheelhouse.” Decades on, Frizzell embraces numerous artistic styles, tailoring the look of a project to its demands. As for the future: “I have another little book idea on the go, but there’s also always somebody wanting a painting.” Published by Massey University Press, The Sun is a Star (below) will be launched later this year.

Looking ahead Have you started planning for 2022? Are there any property transactions in your crystal ball?

I

t is hard to believe how quickly Christmas and the New Year are approaching. We are well into the second half of 2021 and as warmer weather approaches, many people are sitting down and wondering what the New Year

will hold for them. CindyLee Sinclair from Harcourts Holmwood says that often that wondering involves making decisions around property. “Whether you are upsizing, downsizing, side-sizing (not a real word, I know), or adding to or removing from your investment portfolio, property transactions can be complicated and timeconsuming. That is where real estate agents come in.” “Buyers are pouring through my door, and I can say that keeping up with the level of enquiry is almost a full-time job. Using a real estate agent and their team of buyer’s agents ensures that you have someone with you each step of the way – someone who has the most up-to-date knowledge of new listings and often listings that haven’t even yet come to the market.” If you are considering selling, now is a great time as the number of sellers and competition will only increase as the weather continues to improve. Time for a Brought together by shared experiences of grief, the Cool Change Sisters are a raw and honest voice, sharing their stories in the hope of sparking a much-needed shift in New Zealand’s mental health space.

Grace

G

race Curtis, Georgia Harris and Tori Wheelans are the founders of Cool Change, a movement to give the bereaved a voice and break the stigmas surrounding suicide. As three young women navigating the devastation of suicide in their own families, Cool Change was a way to connect with others who were going through a similar experience. “We started Cool Change with very little expectation, but had hopes of reaching others feeling similarly to us. It is a place for the bereaved to break their silence. We wanted others to understand their loved ones passing by suicide is in

no way at all shameful and that they can speak up about their hurt.” The silence around suicide is a catalyst for the mental health crisis New Zealand is currently experiencing, and Cool Change understands this is where the conversation needs to start. “Many of us feel shame about struggling with mental health, making it harder to reach out for help and get better. But people need to understand that there is nothing to be ashamed of. Mental health issues are still widely misunderstood but at Cool Change, we view them the same way we view physical health issues and

express that it should be treated with just as much importance to the individual and society as a whole.” And as far as combatting that shame and those stigmas? It starts by teaching people that it is okay to not be okay, and enabling them to understand that talking about suicide isn’t taboo at all. “The statistics show one in four Kiwi adults will battle with mental illness at some point in their life, which means in your places of work, sports teams, family, and amongst your friends, the likelihood of someone struggling is extremely high. This is why we feel so passionately about

Cool Change want to offer tools for the bereaved but also to those who are trying to support others grieving. Their advice is simple, but impactful.

“Don’t be afraid of saying the wrong thing! Most often people are too afraid of saying something to make the person upset. Chances are they’re already upset so it’s best to acknowledge their feelings and let them talk it through. That is far better than not acknowledging them at all.”

“Offer practical assistance, for example offer to grab groceries for them, do washing, drop off cooked meals, accompany them on a walk, help out with day-today tasks.”

Tori

what we are doing. We encourage others to talk, talk and talk some more, much of the solutions are found in those who are around us and care about us.” The statistics in New Zealand are staggering and frightening. From 20182019, data showed the highest number of reported suicides New Zealand has recorded. 685 people lost their lives to suicide, which also means 685 families and communities have had to go through the trauma and grief that comes with it. Cool Change is a small but mighty force of hope in what can seem like a

hopeless reality for the bereaved. “We have high hopes for Cool Change with a focus on public speaking, particularly in schools come 2022. We believe where we will be most utilised is to be face to face with our communities and allow them into the rawness of our stories. We have some exciting things coming up on our horizon that we can’t wait to share.” You can follow the Cool Change sisters’ journey on their online platforms, where they share their upcoming plans and initiatives, as well as advice and support to those who need it.

“Be willing to sit in silence and listen. Sometimes people that are going through bereavement need someone to just listen. Be prepared to listen without judgement and don’t feel bad if they’re upset, that is often a good sign the person is letting their feelings out and they feel comfortable to do so.”

September is gynaecological awareness month, and Talk Peach is the Kiwi organisation making big moves to educate about gynaecological cancers. Founder Tash Crosby shares her story in hopes to educate and support women across the country.

D

iagnosed with ovarian cancer at 36 years old, Tash is one of the mere 15% of people that caught the disease at an early stage. “I was young, healthy, and fit. I looked after my wellbeing, I attended regular cervical smears. A gynecological cancer was the last thing on my mind when I started to notice some changes to my body and some niggly symptoms.” Achy back, fatigue, abnormal abdominal pains, painful bowel movements, indigestion, and bloating were among some of Tash’s symptoms. It took three self-admitted trips to the emergency department over two painful weeks, before she finally got answers. “We think you have ovarian cancer,” are words that changed her life. Tash underwent two surgeries which removed her ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, and stomach lining. “Following surgery, I had six months of very heavy chemotherapy, an intense regimen for an insidious cancer. It was very hard, and I am still managing the effects of it today.” “When I was diagnosed there was very little support. I was

handed a small slip of paper from the Macmillan trust, an overseas gynaecological cancer charity. That’s when I really did feel like I would be going through this without much of a community or road map. I felt really alone; no one was doing fun runs, no sports teams decked out in our colours, no collections on the streets. My friends and family had never even heard of it.” “The mental and emotional impact of cancer is huge, but having a type that goes unspoken about and largely underfunded is heartbreaking and extremely isolating for those diagnosed, and their loved ones.”

Some of the most common signs across the

It was this that sparked Tash’s desire to help others going through the same thing. “I had learnt so much during my battle. I felt a responsibility to educate.” And so Talk Peach was born. Talk Peach work to inform New Zealanders on gynaecological disease and connect and support those who are diagnosed. Tash applauds the tremendous outcomes in the fight against breast cancer and its much-needed continuation to do so, and believes that with a similar commitment, Talk Peach can achieve the same success for gynaecological cancers. “We often feel like we are shouting into an abyss and no one can hear. When you look around and see little happening to change this, it’s an extremely terrifying and sad position to be in. Ovarian cancer needs to be a priority. We know that people battling with ovarian cancer right now feel unheard,

no one wants to beg but our community is a desperate one.” So how can you get behind the important work Talk Peach is doing? Tash says, “Have open conversations about gynecological health with friends and whānau. Get us in to educate your workforce, donate via our website and jump on board as a corporate sponsor.” New Zealand menstrual cup company, Hello has come on board as Talk Peach’s charity partner to launch a limitededition Hello Talk Peach menstrual cup range. “We admire the work Tash does so much and want to support her amazing mahi,” says Hello co-founder and registered nurse, Mary Bond. “One New Zealander dies every 24 hours from a gynaecological cancer, yet the awareness is frighteningly low. By partnering with Talk Peach, we hope to play a part in changing that.” Ten percent of every sale of the Hello Talk Peach cup will go directly to support the work Talk Peach do. Hello Cup customers also have the option of making a direct donation to Talk Peach from the Hello Cup website. Tash says the collaboration is monumental for Talk Peach. “I’m very thankful for their love and support for our community, together we will foster much needed change and save lives. It’s incredible to have a much-loved brand on board and taking a stance for this neglected space in health.” To purchase a Talk Peach cup, visit www.hellocup.com

A piece of pottery tells the story of its materials and its maker…

’ll never forget the feeling of trying the [pottery] wheel for the first time; it was like finding the love of my life,” says Grace. “I just had to figure out how on earth to make a life out of it.” Grace studied art history and anthropology at university, but there was always a feeling of something missing. When she sought the tutelage of master potter Frederika Ernsten she found what she was looking for. “She taught me that it wasn’t just about making a pretty object; she was teaching integrity in the craft, functionality, and expression.” After training for six years, Grace made pottery her job, setting up Ata Ceramics, a teaching studio and shop, alongside fellow local potter Coralie Winn. Its light-filled studio displays the beautifully handcrafted yet functional works of Grace and other local potters. All of the pieces are original, none the same, allowing art lovers to select a ceramic that speaks directly to them. “Like a sculpture for everyday use, it should give you a feeling,” says Grace. A diverse colour palette is on show. Feeling the intricate textures imparts a special knowing that each one was handcrafted by a local potter. “A piece of pottery tells the story of its materials and its maker; it carries the hand of the potter who made it, each piece, even in a set, is unique,” she explains. Grace’s work is inspired by the natural beauty and colour palette of Aotearoa. “I love the way imperfections and variations that exist in natural objects like rocks, wood, and leaves are often replicated on the surface of handmade pottery.” Incorporating raw local materials such as wood, ash, and granite into the glazes and clay, Grace creates pieces that are at home in the landscape, and respect the planet as much as possible, while still being beautiful.

Yoga Day in Christchurch For the first time yoga en masse is planned for Saturday November 27 in Christchurch, timed to coincide with a similar event in Auckland.

T

imed on the eve of summer, it is an opportunity to feel the grass under your toes, the sun on your back and experience the collective energy of doing gentle yoga poses and a group-guided meditation practice, while raising funds to help those suffering from mental health. Set amongst the peaceful surrounds of

Ferrymead Heritage Park in Christchurch, from 10am to 5pm, organisers say there is no need for prior yoga experience, and everyone is welcome. Franko Heke, event owner says: “NZ Yoga Day is a chance for everybody to put down their devices for a few hours, head to the park with friends or whānau

and try a yoga class for the first time or continue their yoga journey.” NZ Yoga Day is about more than stretching bodies; it is also about emotional well-being. To emphasise this benefit, NZ Yoga Day has partnered with I Am Hope, a charity that supports young people and their families dealing with mental health. A percentage of ticket sales goes directly to the charity. Heke, who has suffered from his own mental health issues, says meditation and yoga helped him through hard times and the partnership with I Am Hope felt logical given the benefits of mindfulness at alleviating anxiety and other mental health issues. “Our high rate of suicide is evidence mental illness is not dealt with very well in Aotearoa New Zealand. We believe that practicing yoga and meditation can help people deal better with the anxiety from the stress of everyday modern life - I know because it helped me”, says Heke. he film met with a rapturous reception on the world stage at the recent Venice Film Festival, and this month Campion picked up a Silver Lion award for best director. Made for Netflix with additional financial support from the New Zealand Film Commission, The Power of the Dog was shot entirely at South Island locations in 2020. Based on the 1967 novel of the same name by Thomas Savage, two sons, edging into their 40s and unmarried, run the family’s successful cattle ranch. A long-established routine is disrupted when gentlemanly brother George unexpectedly brings home new wife Rose and her studious son Peter. Rough-hewn, toxically male brother Phil Burbank lashes out relentlessly, tormenting mother and son as unwelcome interlopers. Its star-studded line-up includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Kodi Smit-McPhee as well as Kiwi actress, Thomasin McKenzie. NZIFF 2021 will open with The Power of the Dog in Auckland on October 28, Christchurch the following night, and Wellington and Dunedin follow the week after. Following its exclusive NZIFF premiere, Transmission Films will release the film theatrically across the country on November 11, and globally on Netflix on December 1. Six other NZIFF films have already been announced for the 2021 programme. Educating for excellence in lockdown Strong relationships are the foundation of a vibrant school culture and are further cemented during testing times.

C

hildren build deeper bonds with staff and each other when they are known, noticed, appreciated, and challenged to be their best. These deeper connections accelerate motivation and learning,” says The Cathedral Grammar School principal

Scott Thelning. Maintaining connections, having continuity and consistency is the challenge during a Covid-19 lockdown, he says. “The Cathedral Grammar School has five key principles supporting our approach to

maintaining a strong sense of connection and community. “These are to connect and care, challenge growth, provide support, shared agency, and expand possibilities. “It was imperative during lockdown that we built into our programme a variety of opportunities to connect, talk, laugh, share and celebrate. This was done on different levels small groups, classes, multiple classes and the whole school.” He says the foundation for this approach is targeted teaching in a structured, daily, age-specific timetable with face-to-face contact with teachers. “It was also critical to us that we transferred as much as possible of our on-site experiences and opportunities to the online environment. “The students’ day started off with fun morning catch-ups

with their teacher and class, often based around games and dress ups. They also had student-led house challenges and pre-school daily mat time. “Well-being check-ins were also important during the lockdown, with twice weekly live chapel services.” Mr Thelning adds that a sense of normality was maintained with a weekly assembly and staff gatherings. Specialist music lessons and performances kept going, as did specialist art, PE and science lessons. “After three weeks being offsite, our students have returned to school feeling like the status quo was largely maintained during lockdown. There actually was no transitioning back into school life. It was always there, just planned for, adapted and delivered through different means.” www.cathedralgrammar.school.nz

ew Zealand has some of the highest mental health stats for teenagers in the world,” says UpstreamNZ co-founder Mitch Shaw. “Research shows that having positive stakeholders in their lives helps young people work through any difficulties they are having, but one of the biggest barriers is getting funding to make these stakeholders available. We started UpstreamNZ in 2018 to help solve the problem with fundraising, to make sure these resources were available. All round, it is a win-win.”

Using a ‘triple win’ model, Kiwis buy from an approved UpstreamNZ Supplier, a commercial business that has chosen to support UpstreamNZ. The supplier donates a portion of their invoice to one of UpstreamNZ’s 13 approved youth charities. The customer doesn’t pay any extra, and with over 100 suppliers to choose from, there are plenty of opportunities to create impact. UpstreamNZ supports local and national charities including CDN Trust, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Wai-Ora Trust and Conductive Education Trust.

Galileo: Scientist, Astronomer, Visionary, this uniquely interactive globetrotting exhibition, is anchored on Christchurch shores until October 31st. Created by the Artisans of Florence, the exhibition commands international appeal, due to its carefully researched and masterfully handcrafted interactive models of Galileo’s original experiments. Over 60 reconstructed inventions, including the telescope, the kaleidoscope, and a perpetual motion device are on display, allowing you the opportunity to investigate, explore and even recreate an experiment or two.

Galileo Gallilei, Italian scientist of the late Renaissance period, made huge contributions to astronomy, physics and mathematics, including the discovery of Jupiter’s four moons and early developments to telescopes. His revolutionary thinking led to his ultimate imprisonment and death in 1642. Such exhibits allow us to truly appreciate the voyage of science and the value of continuous innovation, engineering human development to greater heights. The future belongs to the curious, they say, so join the adventure.

Innovating Business

Celebrating small Canterbury businesses innovating in hard times

I

n 2016, Jeuneora launched its skincare business with only 100 units of collagen. Fast-forward

to 2021 and it is now supporting the beauty and wellbeing of tens of thousands of glowing

customers worldwide, with its marine collagen and plantbased supplements. In May 2021 a natural progression into the skincare category followed with The Essential Seven. CEO and founder Monique Kaminski (avove) says the team is passionate about what it does, its people, products, customers, and caring for the environment. “It was important that we developed a beautiful range of [skincare] products that

were ground-breaking, unique, sustainable and of the highest quality while still being accessible to our customers. The result is a Kiwi-made line of skincare that uses a unique formulation of exceptional quality cruelty-free and dermatologisttested ingredients that perfectly combine the power of science and nature. “We’ve continued to innovate and listen to our customers, recently introducing a new product to our flagship skincare range,” she adds. “We created SupearlaNova Hydrating Face Polish because we saw the need and demand for a physical exfoliator that’s active enough to do the job, but gentle enough to not irritate your skin. It features upcycled, real crushed pearls that would otherwise go to waste as a by-product of the jewellery industry, and it sparkles! Enough said.”

Q: I am looking at buying a business, how do I go about financing it? A: When financing a business purchase, it is important that you try to

find the most effective method of doing so. If you have equity in your own home, it may be possible to use this equity to borrow against. In addition, the interest on a loan borrowed against a residential property is likely to be much less than a commercial loan, and the loan principal can be paid off over a longer period than a commercial loan, making repayment levels easier for the borrower. You will need to be happy about using your home as security in this situation. It will be very important to have a business plan in place with financial projections which can be shared with the lender, showing the ability of the business to service and repay the loan. You can prepare this yourself, or (preferably) seek professional advice from an accountant, who can offer further advice to you regarding your business plan. We have good connections with banks and other lenders, and so we can assist in directing a Purchaser to a good source of loan funds if required.

Well heeled

You can be swept off your feet, stand on your own two feet or take a load off. Whether it’s walking, running or standing, your trotters are your A to B. When they experience pain, the quality of daily activities deteriorates. Like it or not, pain gets our attention.

eel pain is the most common condition seen by podiatrists. It affects all ages from children to dedicated athletes, including regular Joe’s who find themselves frustrated by the ‘yoyo’ pain effect. Heel pain can exhibit from the morning’s first steps, after prolonged sitting or after engaging in sports. The pain might dissipate initially as the body ‘warms up’ but it will inevitably return, gradually worsening. Ignoring pain for an extended period will only exacerbate the problem. A professional diagnosis followed by the appropriate treatment plan is the best solution. Footprints Podiatry has successfully been treating plantar heel pain for more than 20 years, using the latest taping techniques, exercise programmes, Plantar Fascia braces/splints, moonboots, and customised orthotics to facilitate corrective treatment. Anti-ageing, tightening treatments What makes a person’s face look younger or older involves a number of variables such as skin texture, tone, and colour to wrinkles, loss of volume, and sagging. The last of those, sagging, happens because collagen, the structural support of the skin, diminishes over time. Collagen loss also contributes to volume loss and wrinkle formation.

O

bviously, the best way to stay youthful looking is to not lose collagen in the first place. We can do that by using sunscreen regularly and living a good lifestyle; no smoking, low alcohol and sugar consumption, regular exercise and trying to keep inflammation down

in general. Fortunately, there are lots of technologies available that can lift, tighten and firm multiple layers of the skin, to cause remodelling of the deep to superficial collagen layers. The best of the non-invasive technologies available use either

radio-frequency or ultrasound to stimulate collagen production in the different layers of the skin. Radiofrequency in a broad, diffused way and ultrasound in a deeper, targeted way. Collagen fibres are like a loose-knit sweater and these treatments tighten that sweater!

There is little to no downtime as the treatments work below the top layer of skin. Results develop over the months following the treatment as the body grows new collagen, producing amazing results. Check out this month’s special at the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic. www.skinrejuvenationclinic.co.nz

When it comes to embracing the grey, there really is something for everyone. It’s a natural process but it does not have to be a gruelling one. When teamed with a precision cut, the result is transformative, explains V for Hair and Beauty Master Stylist Vicki Ogden-O’Fee.

J

ust because you have silver hair coming in and you want to go grey gracefully, doesn’t mean it has to be a silver colour,” she says. “We help you discover if you are warm or cool based on hair, skin and eyes, and from there we help you decide the best look for you.” While those with a warm base suit silver hair with soft champagne, sandy iris,

strawberry beige, or translucent butterscotch tones, those with a cool base suit silver dove, champagne lilac or platinum iris. “Getting your colour undertone is so important and when this is done right it gives your face an instant brightening, lift and can take years off,” Vicki says. “Get it wrong and you will feel drab and look drained and older… consultation is key!” www.vforhair.co.nz

Variety, personality & quality With colour bursting out all around us, spring is the perfect time to rethink your spectacle frames. Gone are the days when we select safe blacks and greys to blend with every outfit. Today’s glasses frames are an accessory in their own right, and with them front and centre on your face they need to be gorgeous.

W

hen it comes to colour and shape, the rules are there are no rules and certainly no age limits apply. ‘In fashion’ is itself a dated concept in spectacle frames because everything is on the table.

You simply choose what you like and the sheer variety means that your frames are innately timeless and individual to you. Matthews Eyewear Eyecare Riccarton has a huge range of frames,

full of personality and the best quality around. Ultra-soughtafter Maui Jim sunglasses are joined by quirky Parisian brand Carolyn Abram, plus sleek American designs from Garret Leight, and German indie brand

Kreuzbergkinder are just a few of the designer names in store. Experts at fitting frames to faces, you’ll leave with sunglasses or spectacles that enhance your look and express your style. www.matthews.co.nz

That winning smile It says a lot about how far we have progressed in the making and fitting of dentures when those wearing them find themselves receiving compliments about their teeth.

T

oday’s dentures aren’t about just replacing what has been there before.

More importantly, they are about being aesthetically pleasing while feeling like a

natural fit in the mouth. Ryan Carlton of Dentures Plus is committed to

making every denture fitting appointment a positive experience for clients. Every aspect of denture work is carried out here, whether that be full, partial, implant or immediate dentures. It is the only clinic in Christchurch to have the welder specifically designed for the repair of partial dentures. Sports mouthguards and splints are also available. Ryan’s team is a global one, including Ryan’s wife, Marion, who is a German-trained dental technician. “Having such an international team has helped us extend our knowledge of the many different techniques out there,” Ryan says. Ryan recommends clients visit before their teeth are removed so the natural face shape can be appraised, thereby ensuring the denture is sculpted more realistically. This is when the expertise of the denture makers proves invaluable, resulting in dentures that are indistinguishable from real teeth. www.denturesplus.co.nz Metropol 30 September, 2021 43

ost of the 100 trillion bacteria living in each of our digestive systems support our bodies to absorb nutrients and clean up toxins, and play an important role in many other aspects of our health. They also produce vitamins and create the enzymes necessary to metabolise cholesterol and bile acid, and are essential for digesting the fibre found in grains, fruits and vegetables. In the last 10 to 15 years, physicians, epidemiologists and microbiologists have been closely studying the human microbiome. They’ve found that it can promote health, but sometimes initiate disease. Scientists are still in the early stages of understanding the microbiome’s broad role in health, yet they do know that it is a dynamic environment and the abundance of species may fluctuate monthly, weekly, and daily depending on diet, medication, exercise and many other factors. A diverse range of healthy foods is the best way to keep your “gut bugs” healthy. Always remember, you are not just feeding yourself but the 100 trillion bacteria that you need to stay fit and well.

Gut friend or foe? The health and balance of gut microbiomes (bacteria) has been linked to many conditions, ranging from cancer and autoimmunity to diabetes and depression.

n day-to-day life, people most commonly breathe short and shallow. While this is adequate to get the oxygen through us, it is not optimal breathing and can have side effects, including increased feelings of stress and anxiety. Deep breathing, right into the base of our lungs and belly lets our clever brain know that we are safe, as we have

the time to breathe slower. In other words, we are not in danger, and there is no need to feel stressed or anxious. When breathing deeper and slower, the body is in a calmer state. This can help with focus, regulating our emotions, coping with physical pain, reducing feelings of panic, even helping our bodies digest food better.

Tools of the tasty trade Whether you consider yourself a talented chef or a humble home cook, having the right equipment makes cooking so much easier, and enjoyable. Investing in some key tools for your kitchen that you will use nearly every day is a clever move, and the right quality will last the test of time. Here are a few of Metropol’s suggestions.

Chef’s knife

Cast iron pan

Arguably the single most important kitchen tool. A good chef’s knife is not only easier to use but also safer. Having a few different sizes to choose from will set you up for years. Kai Shun Knives

Chopping board A good-quality wooden chopping board will last you years. Essential for nearly every meal, it can also double as a serving platter when entertaining.

Le Creuset Cast Iron Marmite

A ED S UCE

TES SO TAS GO

A rather self-explanatory one, but wooden spoons are essential, especially for use on non-stick surfaces. They are also non-reactive, so no metallic taste will transfer into food when cooking.

YO U D O N

Cast iron pot Another multi-use hero, a cast iron pot can create so many meals on the stove or in the oven. Cast iron retains heat for even cooking, and will also keep meals warm for longer when serving.

A cast-iron skillet is a Lodge Cast Iron Skillet multi-use dream. On the stove or in the oven, these skillets can cook nearly anything, any way you need. The sturdiness and make ensure they last a lifetime.

An amazing events venue A space for creatives is developing in the suburbs as they seek out new and interesting places for their pursuits.

A

recent collaboration between live music booking agency Rattle and Strum and Whisko Creative saw them record music videos for 10 local acts. They filmed in what is the best deliberately-kept-secret venue in the city, the Milton St Substation. The building has retained its past life links, at night it literally lights up into a

modern venue. Venue manager Alex Balchin says the organisers of the video shoot chose the building because of its versatility. “The industrial interior can be beautifully softened, which we often see for weddings. For the video shoot, it was decorated into a bohemian space.”

Local band Saint Peter’s Thursday and videographer Caleb Waiari filmed two music videos, including one for their much-anticipated single Fishermen. Filming at night, they captured the faint lights of the Port Hills shining through the original front-facing window of The Substation, to great effect. “Personally, I’m looking forward to Marley and Honor’s soulful rendition of How Deep Is Your Love,” says Alex. “Call me old-fashioned.” Call him to book for any occasion or purpose on 0274 455 588. pening a coffee shop onsite at Challenge Waimak was a logical step forward for the Kaiapoi service station, owned by Mark Wales for 15 years and managed by Melissa Sayers for six years. Flick the Bean opened in June following a year of research by the pair. They chose Switch coffee, for the flavour, because it’s local, Fair Trade, and 100 percent Arabica beans. Supporting local businesses and being supported by their community is important to them. “The area is being done up, there’s a big park-and-ride next to us, so a lot of people are coming and going, and we’re looking to expand and provide seating, too.” says Melissa. Three qualified baristas – Kerry, Amy and Rachel – have 50-years combined espresso machine operating experience and also serve tasty homemade food. Locals can text their order on the way to work on 022 382 3877 to be picked up at Flick the Bean next to Challenge Waimak 5 Main North Rd, Kaiapoi. Daily scone flavours are on the website.

Spring greens and ricotta quiche

Method 1. 2.

Recipe by Nicola Galloway Prep 30 mins

Cooking 40 mins

Serves 6

Ingredients Nicola Galloway is an awardwinning food writer, culinary tutor and author of Homegrown Kitchen cookbook.

Crust:

3/4 cup (110g) white flour 1/2 cup (50g) rolled oats 1/3 cup (50g) pumpkin, sunflower or sesame seeds 1/2 teaspoon salt 75ml extra virgin olive oil 1 small egg Lemon juice if needed

3.

4.

Filling:

1 tablespoon olive oil 1 leek (or 4 small), roughly chopped 4-5 large leaves of silverbeet, stalks removed 4 eggs 250g ricotta Zest of 1 lemon Handful of spring herbs (parsley, chives, coriander), roughly chopped Generous pinch of salt and twist of black pepper

5.

Handful of grated cheddar cheese and pumpkin seeds for topping.

Find more recipes at www.homegrown-kitchen.co.nz

6.

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease a deep 20cm quiche dish (or use a 25cm tart dish). Place the flour, oats, pumpkin seeds and salt into a food processor and blend until roughly ground. In a small jug whisk together the olive oil and egg. Add to the food processor and pulse briefly until the mixture comes together. Press the mixture between your fingers, if it holds together without crumbling it is ready. If the mixture is dry add 2-3 teaspoons of lemon juice and pulse again to combine. Tip the dough directly into the greased quiche or tart dish and press evenly into the base and sides. Pre-bake the crust for 10 minutes. Prepare the filling. Heat the olive oil in a heavy-based frying pan over a moderate heat. Add the leek and sauté for 5 minutes until softened. Wash the silverbeet and roughly chop, add to the pan and cover with a lid. Cook for 5 minutes until wilted then remove from the heat. Place the eggs, ricotta, lemon zest, herbs and seasoning into the food processor (there is no need to clean it after making the base). Add the cooked greens and blend until smooth. Pour the green custard into the pre-baked quiche base. Sprinkle with cheese and pumpkin seeds. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the custard is just set. Cool for 10 minutes before cutting into wedges or serve cold.

Natural Healing For most people, your bedroom is your sanctuary – the place where you begin and end each day, and where you retreat to recharge your batteries. It’s also a space that demands special care be taken when decorating and selecting a colour palette. The hues you choose to surround yourself with have been shown to have a significant psychological and emotional impact, which means that you’re going to want to select ones that support restfulness and rejuvenation. Earthy greens have long been touted as some of the most calming colours around, primarily for their association to nature. So, it makes sense to look to this

62 30 September, 2021 Metropol

section of the colour wheel as the base of your palette. Battens are an easy way to create texture on your walls or ceiling, and the only limit to how you use them is your imagination. Your battens could be vertical or horizontal lines, a right-angled grid, turned 45 degrees, form geometric designs like diamonds or hexagons, or used to generate

more randomised designs. And just because you want to add battens to a wall doesn’t mean they have to go all the way to the ceiling or floor. This cosy bedroom has texture to spare, including a dense series of thin half-round battens adorning the shelf wall that plays the part of the headboard. To create even more interest, the upper section of wall is painted in Resene Stone Age while the lower shelf section and battens are in slightly deeper Resene Wilderness. Further texture has been brought in through a mixture of textiles and bed linens in natural fibres in hues ranging from olive green to dusty terracotta to biscuit beige. To bring these colours off the bed and around the room, various vases, plant pots and other accessories have been painted in Resene Beethoven, Resene Papier Mache, Resene Teak, Resene Twine and Resene Celeste.

Get inspired at your local Resene ColorShop, www.resene.co.nz/colorshops.

Imagine your home improvements Albert Einstein once said: “Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.” Add a bit of inspiration to the mix and that’s exactly what you get when you visit a home show, albeit a preview of a home’s potential attractions.

C

anterbury is lucky to have two home shows annually, including one in the next few weeks, where anyone keen to add value, technology, ambience and cutting-edge design to their living environment will find a smorgasbord of ideas all in one venue. Aside from the inspirational aspect

for attendees, home shows provide a multitude of benefits for exhibitors and homeowners planning to remodel or rebuild, or to upgrade appliance and accessories. Attending a home show can provide valuable insight and ideas about what products you should choose, and which company can serve your needs best.

Talk directly to suppliers

An excellent reason for going to a home show is so that you can talk directly to the suppliers of products and services. While a company’s website may be bursting with helpful information, there’s still nothing like getting to talk face-toface with a prospective contracting company.

See products for yourself

Home shows often have products on display for clients to assess and to even try before they buy. Seeing something in person can change your mind, and surely it is best to check things out properly first rather than change your mind after it’s installed in your kitchen or bathroom.

Experience the latest innovations

Home shows are great places to see all the latest innovations, technology and modern home trends from materials to appliances, furniture and fittings, accessories and a wide range of products and services. Often companies will unveil a new product or service at a home show.

Show specials

Many home show exhibitors offer “show specials” in exchange for signing up for a consultation/ quote or purchasing a product. If you’re ready to buy, this is a good way to get the best bang for your buck. And there are always giveaways and draws to enter too.

Switching us on One of life’s little pleasures is relaxing with a coffee after an energetic bout of housework and casting a proud eye over clean surfaces and sparkling appliances.

hy do we love appliances? Because they help us to run our homes efficiently. A kitchen without its fridge, dishwasher, oven, microwave, toaster or coffee-maker is a non-functioning waste of space. In July 2021, a global giant in the production of quality home appliances opened its flagship store here in Christchurch. Midea, founded in 1968, has more than 150,000 employees worldwide. Spanning more than half-acentury in the manufacture and distribution of appliances, it brings a wealth of knowledge and technical expertise in appliance solutions for the home. The Christchurch store showcases larger home appliances, such as whiteware, air conditioners and heat pumps (split type), as well as air treatment appliances, such as fans and dehumidifiers. Medium to smaller grade appliances available are vacuum cleaners, pressure cookers, rice cookers, kettles and blenders, to name but a few. Comfortglaze

No place like home

High Performance Retro-fit Double glazing plays an integral part of keeping your home cool in the summer, and dry and warmer in winter.

The Golden Homes Christchurch team believe your home is likely to be your biggest asset. So, make sure you do the research before taking the next step.

O

ne of the biggest mistakes buyers can make, is to assume that all builders build the same. Shopping around based on price as your main priority, could be a recipe for disaster. Of course, it is important, but so is the quality, the contract, and the inclusions. Ask questions that look beyond price alone and

examine how the house is actually constructed; what are the bones of the house, what’s behind the walls, and what quality of products are being used to construct your new home; do your research. The team at Golden Homes are eager to share their wealth of knowledge with you. Get in touch using the contact details below. www.goldenhomes.co.nz

S

pring is the perfect time to consider double glazing your home to reduce excessive summer heat and allow for a more moderate internal climate, all year round. At Comfortglaze, we specialise in retrofitting your existing single glazed panes from your timber and aluminium windows. Our team of experts remove the old single glazed glass and replace it in the existing frames with new

thermally insulated double glazed panes. These high performance, thermally insulated double glazed units can be tinted or laminated to reduce UV rays, help with noise reduction, and provide up to five times the strength for added security. If you are thinking about renovations and want to get your home ready for the fast approaching summer heat, it’s time to contact Comfortglaze.

Pergola paradise awaits You live in paradise and your home is perfection, but you have a nagging feeling that something is missing. Something that creates outdoor living and entertaining space, provides shade and shelter, is a haven for plants, and affords privacy. That something is a pergola, clad in cedar stained black and with a flying staircase down from the house in local volcanic rock.

J

ust such a pergola now exists in Scarborough, enhancing the amenity of the original home. The owners came up with the idea and the team at Jim The Builder made it work. “We had a great time working up the sketches

together, and modifying the job right to the very last,” says director Jim Stenberg. With another unique project signed off, the team has, as usual, a variety of ventures in the pipeline. “We always do the jobs others won’t,

anything quirky, difficult, and interesting motivates us,” says Jim. Next year brings the restoration of a large original homestead in Akaroa. “Working with Heritage New Zealand, we will take the

home apart by hand and rebuild using the original timbers where possible.” EQC clients are still a priority too. “We have always said we would help, and we have stuck to our guns on that.” www.jimthebuilder.co.nz

Since starting out as an online store and pop-up shop in 2015, A&C Homestore has evolved into a humming enterprise. With three Auckland stores in Birkenhead, Mt Eden, and Orakei, their most recent venture just opened its doors in The Crossing. The new Christchurch store is a pared-back dreamscape. Protection from the elements Rain, hail or shine, we like our homes to be cosy and dry, and that includes outdoor living environments.

K

eeping the weather at bay is no problem with today’s sleek, modern louvres. Imagine no more too hot, too cold, too wet or too windy. Imagine banishing these with one touch of a button. Yes, it can be done using modern technology and expert help from Louvre Concepts. As the name suggests, they’re experts in louvres, from the design through to installation and beyond. In addition to adding value to your home, modern louvres control the amount of shade and protection of outdoor living so that even on the warmest days, you can control that summer heat and make the most of sunny afternoons. Operated via a remote control system, the louvre blades pivot open or

closed depending on the weather. They even work if you’re not around, with an in-built intelligent rain sensor automatically closing the roof when the first raindrops fall. As well as overhead louvres, areas that need wind protection can be fitted with horizontal louvre panels to close in the space when it’s needed, perfect for protecting BBQ and entertaining areas. Ideally the best time to call in the experts is at the beginning, whether your home project is a new build, a renovation or an addition. A consultation at the design phase will ensure you receive the best possible advice about option and solutions to upgrade and enhance your outdoor living. From there, the Louvre Concepts team will work to turn your dream into reality, its specialist qualified builders and installers helping to create a prefect entertaining space in your backyard. Louvre Concepts takes control of the process, designing and manufacturing tailor-made louvres locally in New Zealand. The materials and construction are engineered to withstand New Zealand’s harsh climate and rapidly changing weather conditions. The Dulux powder-coated paint finish can be colour matched to complement your existing joinery for a seamless look.

The benefits of louvres Fingertip control – The blades are easily controlled by remote and close automatically at the first sign of rain. Insulation - If you are using outdoor heaters, the louvres can help to keep heat in. Function - Louvres allow you to use your outdoors all year round. Lighting – Allow more control over the amount and type of light in your outdoor living area. Ventilation - You can promote airflow into your covered outdoor area.

Having a signature scent for your home doesn’t need to mean burning candles for hours. Oil diffusers are a popular option for creating a beautiful smelling space, and calming environment.

he beauty of oil diffusers is the variety of scents to choose from. For some diffusers, you can take your pick of essential oil flavours and add a few drops to create an energising and uplifting mood, or a more relaxing and calming atmosphere. Building trust Ask anyone to name the one overriding and essential determinant that influences their final decision in choosing one business over another and invariably the answer will be “a trusted name”.

T

rust is key in business, and is born from a customer service that consistently delivers in terms of workmanship, budget and meeting deadlines. D.G.I. Morgan Ltd is one such

business. This North Canterbury construction company was founded in 2015 by David Morgan. Its building services encompasses both residential

and architectural new builds; commercial construction; alternations and renovations; high end interior fit outs and custom timber joinery. Other services include design and planning; project management; general and commercial maintenance contracts (including emergency callouts), and insurance work. This one-stop business also has its own steel fabrication service, offering steel fabrication and repairs for stainless steel, mild steel, aluminium and alloy. All fabrication work is carried out by the highly qualified and skilled engineering team. The business slogan “no job too big or small – we do it all” is taken seriously here. Whether it is a big commercial construction,

fitout or maintenance work, or a smaller scale project, all are equally important and are meticulously carried out to satisfy clients’ needs. Another major point of difference with this building company is the sole and seamless relationship between client and provider. “From the project’s beginning to its end; from the office to the site of work, we deal directly with the client. Paramount to us is excellent communication throughout the whole process. We are the face of the business and we are dedicated to providing an unmatched level of service,” David says. For more information on D.G.I. Morgan Ltd, visit the website below. www dgimorgan.co.nz

Time for a change Sustainability, shop local, carbon footprint, reduce, reuse, repair, recycle, think globally act locally. These concepts have gradually imprinted on our minds and our consciences, gaining real traction politically and personally since the significant and high profile “Save Manapouri” environmental campaign began in 1959.

A

ctive environmental awakening of city folk progressed from the compost bin in the back yard, to separating rubbish from the recycling, low emission wood burners or none at all, abandoning single use plastic bags, to arrive at the urgency of Climate Change, and wondering when and how we might trade up to an electric vehicle. M F Turnbull have always been early adopters of sustainable living, promoting the refresh of kitchen, laundry, and bathroom cabinetry and the rejuvenation of furniture with its stunning resurfacing solutions. A no-brainer: you save money and get a fantastic result, no materials and energy are used in creating new cabinetry, and our local landfill doesn’t have to accommodate a cast-off kitchen or bathroom. Plus, never underestimate the satisfaction of having done something good for the planet. Monique and husband Murray’s sustainability ethos extends to their business model too, adopting an

A no-brainer: you save money and get a fantastic result, no materials and energy are used in creating new cabinetry, and our local landfill doesn’t have to accommodate a cast-off kitchen or bathroom. approach of continual learning and a complete career for staff who are interested. Since their beginnings in the late 80s, they have grown to a team of 22, many of whom completed apprenticeships at Turnbull’s, and they currently have three trainees who are working towards a formal qualification. Almost three years ago, the company further enhanced its green credentials, working with suppliers to start phasing

out solvent based products in favour of waterborne applications. “It’s so much better for the environment, and for our operations team,” says Director Monique Turnbull. The team can strip back surfaces but it is not usually necessary. “We can recolour any type of kitchen surface that manufacturers can make. Even doors where the plastic coating is breaking down, we can remove the coating and apply the colour you want to the underlying substrate.” Resurfacing old furniture is a favourite - a client will bring in an unusual piece, it might have lovely proportions and be beautifully made but the appearance no longer suits. Refinished in a bright colour it can be a real showstopper, or it could go out the door and start a whole new life with a shabby chic-style distressed finish. The process is easy. Just send photos through the website or to steve@mfturnbull.co.nz to get an estimate, a home visit and quote can be done when you are ready.

No sign of slowing Well, what a year it has been. The property market has been extremely hot all year with no sign of letting up. We went into another lockdown, which invariably slowed everything down and gave us all time to take a breather and re-evaluate where to from here.

N

eedless to say, level two brought us out of our hibernation so to speak and we’re back into it, refreshed and with a lot of energy. And while the alert levels have come down, the market is showing no sign of slowing down. We have properties on the market and properties in the background which will come to the market as soon as our clients are ready, says Jacqui McBride from Mike Pero Fendalton. It is an exciting time for both sellers and buyers, especially with the arrival of the warmer months. So, in short, nothing has changed. The way we look after our clients when selling and buying is as attentive and thorough as ever. For our clients that are selling, it means assisting where we can to ensure their property is looking its best prior to taking it to market.

It is an exciting time for both sellers and buyers, especially with the arrival of the warmer months.

This helps share the burden and pressure of what can be an incredibly stressful time and offer an experienced and calm voice in the midst of it all. For our clients looking to buy, it means ensuring that their offer gets across the line, with the expertise to offer advice and guidance if needed. This way, at the end of the day, both parties end up extremely happy with their outcome. If you are wanting to sell but are unsure of where to start, feel free to pick up the phone for a chat. Capturing rugged beauty

Enhance your outdoor space We might have thought that spring would never arrive, but our calendars at least are telling us that it is here. So it is definitely time to take a look at the gardens we have perhaps been neglecting over the winter months.

A

new deck, pergola or trellis might add that extra pizzazz to your garden or perhaps updated paving and fencing. You might even be considering a total makeover of a garden that has seen better days. Carl Gildea of Willow Landscapes is an expert in all aspects of landscaping. With his years of experience in garden construction and design you can trust him to know which different features would enhance your outdoor space.

For a free quote for your project call Carl on 021 536 442.

“My team and I can offer a complete package from initial garden design to hard landscaping and finally the softening touches of planting. We know the importance of having backyards and gardens ready to enjoy in the summer months and, as landscape professionals, we are on hand to give both advice and to get our hands dirty. What’s in your garage? Names such as Lotus, Lamborghini and Maserati spin the wheels of many who enjoy the finer things in life. Indeed cars have been status symbols since 1886 when the first “vehicle powered by a gas engine” was patented by Carl Benz.

D

Electrifying new chapter WORDS BY BEN SELBY

The All-Electric MX-30 is the ultimate expression of Mazda’s commitment to a sustainable future. It also carries the distinction of being the first mass-produced fully electric vehicle to carry the Mazda emblem. Having been impressed with the Mild Hybrid variant a few months back, I was itching to see just how the EV variant compares. Metropol 050821 - Half Pg MX-30.pdf 1 28/07/2021 1:41:07 PM

Drive is sent through the front wheels and Mazda claim energy consumption of 18.5 kWh/100km. A full charge will also give you a snip over 220km in range.

he All-Electric MX-30 retails for $74,990 plus ORC which includes a Wallbox Pulsar Plus Charger valued at $2000 for early adopters. This means the All-Electric is eligible for the Government’s Full Clean Car Rebate of $8625. Also, for every MX-30 sold, Mazda New Zealand will fund five native trees in conjunction with Trees That Count. Power comes from an e-SKYACTIV 35.5kWh battery system producing 107kW and 271Nm of torque. Drive is sent through the front wheels and Mazda claim energy consumption of 18.5kWh/100km. A full charge will also give you a snip over 220km in range. The interior is nigh on identical to the Mild Hybrid, which means a variety of recycled materials are used including heritage cork for the centre console and breathing fabric for the upper door trim. It also sports recycled plastic fabric made from single use plastic bottles. Details like the floating centre console and touchscreen for the climate controls only add to an essentially attractive and minimalist cockpit. Plus, all the switchgear feels so satisfying to touch and operate. As the All-Electric is available only in flagship Takami grade, there are plenty of toys. These include Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE Active Safety Package, 18-inch alloys, sunroof, heated seats, heated steering wheel, Mazda’s 8.8-inch Connect Infotainment System, Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto and a delightful BOSE stereo system. On the move, the All-Electric MX-30 feels planted and the soft dampers underneath make for a

sumptuous ride. Slicing through dual carriageway traffic is almost telepathic thanks to Mazda’s Electric G-Vectoring Control. Also, its lithium-ION batteries emit the faintest rumble on top of regular EV silent running, giving the MX-30 a character of its own. It also manages to be a very well sorted handler and things like torque steer and body roll are kept at a minimum. All in all, much like the Mild Hybrid, the All-Electric MX-30 is a bold new chapter for the Hiroshima based brand and certainly worth checking out.

REMARKABLE DESIG & PERFORMANCE

WORDS BEN SELBY

The Lexus IS is a bit of a dark horse in the Lexus family. Due to a surge in SUV sales, the IS has taken a back seat in recent times. But for 2021, the IS has been refreshed, and still exudes quality.

OVERVIEW Price: $85,800 Engine: 2.5L Naturally Aspirated Four Cylinder with Electric Motor Transmission: E CVT Auto Power: 164kW (Engine and Hybrid System) Torque: 221Nm (Engine), 300Nm (Electric Motor) Fuel Consumption: 5.1L/100km CO2 Emissions: 116g/km Wheels: 19-inch Dark Premium Metallic Alloys Weight: 2140kg Wheelbase: 2800mm

he mid-range IS300h F Sport featured here has an entirely new spindle grill, redesigned head and taillight cluster, and a lower, wider stance. For what is essentially a heavy facelift, it’s a looker. Under the bonnet is a 2.5L four-cylinder petrol engine mated to hybrid system with combined power of 164kW. Inside you get a new 10.3-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. This being the F Sport, there are plenty of F Sport badges. The red leather seats are uber comfy and the switchgear feels so well put together. My only gripe was the mousepad for operating the infotainment screen wasn’t terribly responsive, but as the new system is touchscreen, this is no real hardship. When you drive a hybrid, you expect there to be willingness on its part to run on electric power around town without needlessly cutting in and out of EV drive. The IS300h does just that, and rather well. Average fuel consumption of 5.1L/100km is also pretty decent for a car which weighs a snip over two tonnes. You do indeed feel that girth though. Zero to 100km/h in 8.5 seconds is not terribly brisk, but you can still have a bit of fun when you flick over to Sport or Sport

Plus. The new IS was developed at the new Shimoyama Test Track, which is a scaled down version of the Nurburgring. This test facility has resulted in some tweaks to the dampers and suspension, resulting in a car which can handle remarkably well. That said, driving exuberance is not really the IS300 Hybrid’s winning hand; it’s more of a sedate cruise, which in itself is an utter delight. The road holding is very well sorted and ride comfort is supple and incredibly refined. Five days with the IS300h Hybrid was enough to convince me that this Lexus with petrol and electric drive working in tandem is the package you need. The petrol variants are still good, but wafting along with silent running while sipping away at the go-juice just makes so much more sense. Whether you opt for the base model, the Limited, or the F Sport, there is still so much to like here. Sure, you may still crave the extra ground clearance of a small premium SUV and fair enough too, however don’t overlook the new Lexus IS300 Hybrid, it’s handsome, comfortable and a well sorted premium saloon that easily deserves more recognition in the eye’s premium buyers. One might say it is a premium choice.
