Keep calm and carry on

rying to keep calm amid changing chaos and uncertainty is not always easy yet it is one of the keys to surviving in current tough times. We all know business methods NATIONAL MULTI-AWARD WINNERS 2013 - 2019

and systems have changed, and many people are working smarter, looking after each other, and trying to stay safe and strong all at the same time. We also hear about those who are struggling, those who are raging against the mandates, and those who are losing their personal, mental, and business battles. What is less well publicised are those who are continuing to succeed, to prosper and to get on with life. Among those are the younger generations who seem to pivot and adapt to change more easily than those more set in their ways. These pivots have resulted in some exceptional new

businesses starting up, and also to entrenched firms seeking and finding ways to carry on. This issue includes insight from people proudly leading the way, and also some tips on how to find your own new path. Working hard is all very well, yet life, or rather a lifestyle, needs a balance involving rest and relaxation too. You’ll be reading this around St Patrick’s Day and the Irish certainly know how to live and to relax. The following pages have a few suggestions for both. On that note, I will leave you with an old Irish saying: Wherever you go and whatever you do, may the luck of the Irish be there with you.

These groups need venues in the central city that are affordable, and that understand their needs, their budgets, and their goals.”

The 2021 Women of Inﬂuence winners were recently announced, and amid the impressive line-up is Yu Mei founder, Jessie Wong. Taking out the Business Enterprise award, Jessie has seen amazing success in her career, and is making her presence known in the fashion industry. Metropol writer Georgia Summerton chats to her about her journey so far.

Jessie is the founder and director of Yu Mei, and has spent the last seven years growing and developing the brand into what it is today. “To be recognised by the Women of Influence awards is a huge honour especially as someone from the fashion industry, in such a strong business category. It’s not just a reflection of me personally, but an acknowledgement of the grit of our small team, who absolutely punch above their weight. Eighty-five percent of our leadership team are women, and I’m always in awe of the drive and focus they have when it comes to building the best ways to do business beautifully and effectively.” Since launching her business back in 2015, Yu Mei now has three stores across New Zealand and a wholesale network of

37 stockists. There is no doubt a strong sense of pride when reflecting on what the label has achieved so far. “I’m most proud of our exceptional team. We have a lot of fun together and have really pulled off some incredible work in extremely high-pressure times. I think one of our most proud moments as a team was when we opened our Yu Mei Lounge in Newmarket - a result of everyone’s hard work toward growing the brand. The store launch went until 2am, no mean feat for a retail opening.” Being recognised as an influential businesswoman is as Jessie says, a huge honour. When asked about who is the most influential in her life, it is those she holds close. “All of the incredible women who came before me - my mum Jane, grandma Judy and great grandmother Vi, (all of whom have bags named after them!) Then there are all the female business mentors that I’ve been lucky enough to have around.

For instance, Sarah Wickens, who founded Trilogy Skincare, has been such a guiding force in the growth of Yu Mei. I’m also influenced by female fashion designers who have made history. When you really look at it, many of the iconic fashion names today were the vision of men - Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurant, Karl Largerfeld, and while those designers have built incredible legacies, it’s the designers like Miuccia Prada and Phoebe Philo who have impacted me the most.” Jessie also likes to look to some of these special women in her life for inspiration when it comes to the designs and functionality of her Yu Mei pieces. “One of my first designs, the Braidy Bag, was named after my good friend Laura Braid, who was the patron saint of law school and parked up every day in the uni library with her study notes, laptop, chargers, water bottle, make-up bag, the kitchen sink. It’s now the go-to for university students, which I love. Function and utility are some of our pillars at the core of the brand.” As with most businesses, the highs are met with the lows and there are plenty of challenges along the way. Yu Mei is no different, Jessie explains. “When our tannery closed down in 2019, it was one of the saddest and most challenging things that had happened to us as a business. I really felt for all of the team we’d worked so closely with. Even in their closure they were incredibly helpful and worked with us to set up a new supplier. It was pretty important we got it right with the new tannery because the leather we work with is incredibly specialised. “It’s South Island-farmed deer nappa, a by-product of the venison industry in New Zealand. Deer are particularly exceptional because they take a lot of space to farm, so have a low ecological footprint, and the leather is buttery soft and world-class. It’s the perfect hybrid of cow and lamb leather. It’s soft like lamb but strong like cowhide, so it’s perfect for larger, laptop-toting bags. “After we’d sourced our deer nappa supplier, Adrian (our production manager) and I travelled for months to meet with tanneries all over the world. We travelled throughout Italy, France, Japan, China and the USA to find a solution. It took a while and by the end of the year I was exhausted, but when 2020 rolled around, and all travel was cancelled, I was extremely happy and relieved we hadn’t wasted any time finding a solution.” As she mentioned, Jessie has had some wonderful business mentors over the years. A piece of advice that stuck with her was, ‘be relentless.’ “Karen Walker told me that at a Christmas party in her Wellington store when I must’ve been 18 or 19. It’s so true, the difference between someone who will succeed and someone who won’t is the relentless ability to keep going, and to move from fire to fire with complete optimism. That’s building a business!”

hairman of the Fendalton Community Board, a member of the Global Shapers Community for the World Economic Forum and a part of the AsiaNZ Foundation leadership network, Bridget Williams thrives on helping and inspiring others. Hers was the impetus for Bead and Proceed, a social enterprise intended to inspire and uplift individuals of all backgrounds; a catalyst for deeper conversations to be had and ideas to be shared. All this and she is still in her 20s. Motivated by the lack of creative processes acknowledged in work-related environments, Bridget sought a method of cultivating togetherness and “important discussions, bonding over a shared experience.” She drew her idea from the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), seeing the connectability between these goals and “putting an onus on the participants and seeing

similarities and differences between their goals as well as helping to strategise projects and initiatives.” Bead and Proceed has received national and international exposure. “It’s a wonderful journey, complimenting my work done with the community board,” she reflects. Successfully launched and supported by members of the Christchurch community, Bridget understands the challenges that come with starting small, yet remains a firm believer that “the small ideas can have the biggest impact.” Now more than ever, she encourages cherishing creativity, as our every day lives become more distanced and digital. “The presence of creativity is crucial in sparking creative ideas and creative solutions too,” she says. “Be inspired to be a leader too, think and converse differently with whānau and colleagues as “power comes from reconnecting with raw creativity.”

Tips from Bridget: Listen to the cheerleaders encouraging you. Be a contributor and get involved, however that may be. Be an agent of change and take actions to make that change happen. Be available for creativity in your life. Use the framework of the SDG’s to start deeper conversations. Use creativity as a tool to find your passion. Celebrate your strengths.

Angela AN INTERVIEW

International Women’s Day was earlier this month. The stories of women succeeding in the face of adversity are still resonating worldwide; their achievements lauded and used as examples for those facing their own challenges. Metropol editor Lynda Papesch talks to one of them.

ew Zealand has numerous women role models. From actual models to mayors, authors to actresses and any field you care to name, Kiwi women are making a name for themselves. One such is Angela Stone who grew up in Christchurch and has lived most of her adult life in the Garden City. Fashion stylist, model, author, and health and fitness advocate, Angela has a special place in her heart for Christchurch. “I love everything about Christchurch - the people, Sumner, the boutiques; it’s a fantastic city,” she says. Her early years, modelling, at home and abroad, then showcasing on New Zealand television screens in The Real Housewives of Auckland series, raised more than a few challenges. Life has changed much since her fraught housewives’ days when Angela faced online abuse and criticism of her body shape and size. Since then she’s used her time to focus on herself, and on finding health and happiness, creating her own nutrition and fitness programme, The Results Plan. “This has given me a new lease on life; I’ve lost weight, built muscle and gained energy and clarity, and I’m now

on a mission to help other women see the same outcomes,” she enthuses. Finding her path to health and happiness wasn’t always easy, especially dealing with negative comments about herself. “Negative comments aren’t a reflection of you,” she says. “They’re a reflection of the person who says them. “This is something you will hear many say, yet it is not until you experience this, do the work with mentors and clinicians, and get the help to overcome these obstacles [that you understand it].” In some instances Angela has left behind people who didn’t support her on her new path. “You will find out who supports you when you start changing yourself,” she explains. Having a consistent plan keeps her motivated. “I never thought I’d be someone who loves working out as much as I do. Keeping in touch with others helps me stay inspired.” Her ongoing goal is to continue reaching as many people as possible and helping them achieve their health and fitness goals. “I love being there to support people on their journey and see the positive impact it has on their lives” she adds.

a Stone A n g e l a ’s T i p s Start small: The hardest part is starting, so choose an attainable goal, like moving your body for 20 minutes a day for a whole week, and reduce your sugar intake each day.

Think positive: If you’re having an off-day, replace any negative thoughts by thinking of three things you like about yourself. Self motivation is everything.

Keep going: We all feel like giving up at times, but consistency is the key to results. If you’re having an off-day, go back to the first attainable goal you started with.

Adding up retirement Retirement is inevitable for all of us, but some are more prepared than others.

he latest retirement expenditure report predicts that a couple living in Christchurch City will need $809,000 over and above NZ Super to live a retirement with “choices”. The figure reduces to $511,000 for a couple living in the regions. For a “no frills” retirement, a couple living in Christchurch City will need $195,000. In the regions they will need $75,000, over and above NZ Super. “For many, these numbers sound scary and unachievable, others will think, yes that’s about right or some think they will need more. Everyone’s number will be different,” says Shiree Hembrow, a Financial Adviser at phwealth. With 25 years’ experience in financial planning advice, Shiree is there to assist clients with all aspects of wealth management and financial planning – from retirement planning to estate planning, budgeting to investing. The annual retirement expenditure guidelines are there to inform, not scare people, she says.

“NZ Super will cover your basic living costs. It is okay if you own your own home and grow your own vegetables. “Currently for a couple who both qualify, the weekly rate, net of tax at the lowest rate, is $672.22 ($34,955 per year). “For a single person, living alone it is $436.94 per week ($22,721 per year).” Shiree’s advice is to plan for retirement. To young people it is to get into KiwiSaver and use this to get on the property ladder as soon as possible, and then to use their KiwiSaver to help fund retirement. “KiwiSaver has been around for almost 15 years and should make a difference to additional savings available in people’s retirement,” she says. “Generally, we are living longer and could be in retirement for 30 plus years. “The principle of saving a little every month for a very long time is a great way to build wealth to protect your lifestyle in your retirement.”

Shiree’s tips: Think of what you will need during retirement. Start with a budget - a great information tool – and think about how much you will need in your 60s, 70s, and 80s and beyond. Owning your own home will mean that, later in retirement, you can downsize and free up more capital to live on. If you want more “choices”, the earlier you start to plan, the easier it will be to secure the lifestyle you envisage for yourself in retirement.

Early civilisations would use the cacao plant as a medicine during rituals. There is no doubt chocolate is one of the most enjoyed sweet treats, and has been for a very long time. Try one of these suggestions next time you want a chocolate fix.

Fruit dipped Chocolate covered strawberries are a popular choice, but other fruit is just as delicious. Try bananas, oranges, raspberries, and dates. Take inspiration from the classic fondue and cut up a bunch of different fruits, melt some chocolate in a bowl and use skewers to dip and enjoy.

Heated up A warm cup of hot chocolate is especially nice this time of year, while curled up on the couch in the evenings. You can make your own by gently heating some dark chocolate with your milk of choice in a small pot. A touch of cinnamon is extra delicious.

Pour cake batter into a baking paper-lined 28cm cake tin with a removable base. Bake for 1½ hours or until cake is just cooked and a skewer inserted in the middle of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool completely before removing from cake tin and placing on a cake rack. To ganache cake, place an oven tray under the rack which holds the cake and pour chocolate ganache, while still warm, over the centre of the cake. The chocolate will spread and run over the sides. Cover any bare patches with spare ganache using a spatula, and place into the refrigerator for 30 minutes for the ganache to set. Serve cake at room temperature.

Place chocolate buttons in a stainless-steel bowl and melt over a medium-sized pot of simmering water. Meanwhile, place cream into a small pot and heat over a low heat, until just warm. Remove melted chocolate from heat and add warm cream, stirring well to make a smooth, silky ganache. If not using ganache straight away, cool and refrigerate in an airtight container for up to two weeks. When ready to use, warm ganache slightly in microwave until it reaches a pourable consistency.

The smart home rise The smart home market is booming, with more and more people introducing tech into their homes in 2022.

As well as this is popularity in tech that assists with home security, home temperature control, and overall energy efficiency. All attractive additions to many people’s households. With the introduction of simple smart gadgets, you can have remote access to systems such as heating and cooling, music, and multimedia devices throughout the home. With more advanced smart home setups, you can monitor

visitors to your doorstep while you’re away, have remote access to cameras and motion sensors, as well as use key cards or fingerprint recognition instead of traditional locks, making it more difficult for intruders to get access. For improved energy efficiency, there is home tech available to help. Some systems turn lights off automatically when no one is in the room, and the thermostat can be set to allow the internal temperature to drop during the day before returning to a more pleasant level when you return home from work.

With the success in voice-assisted tech, there will be an increase of smart home devices that will use voice as the medium of control, including fridges, wifi routers, air conditioners, smart lights, and smart plugs. This growth has also been encouraged by Covid-19 and the reduction of physically touching surfaces.

e’ve all experienced that “Who’s taken my charging cable?” moment, or gotten sick of navigating the snaking, intertwined bedside cables just so you can set your morning alarm. For Apple users specifically, Belkin has the answer with its stylish MagSafe Boost Charge Pro 3-in-1 charging solution. If you’re an Android user (as 70 percent of you are), then move along, nothing much to see here - unless you’re thinking of jumping ship of course. Belkin has a bit of an affinity for Apple, in spite of its lower market share. However Belkin do make great quality products across the board, and I’ve been a fan of the brand for many years. Available in white/chrome or black/chrome, the Boost Charge Pro has a MagSafe magnetic disc for fast-charging your iPhone 12 or 13 (and variants), a puck for charging your Apple Watch, and the base has a Qi charging pad for your AirPods, or another iPhone, albeit much slower. There is a satisfying magnetic click (and a cool little animation) as the phone gets close to the charger, so you know its hold is secure.

Phones can also be rotated, so you can watch your favourite videos in landscape mode, or binge TikTok in portrait mode while the phone is charging. It’s unusual not to see the more universal USB-C used for the power supply, Belkin opting for a nicely managed, low-profile barrel connector instead. Having a contemporary cable does have it’s drawbacks for the end user though, particularly when it comes to accidental cable breakages. With a small footprint, the Boost Charge Pro is definitely the charging solution of choice if you have an iPhone 12 or 13, and other Apple gadgets. It looks super-stylish wherever you place it, and replaces all those multiple cables with a solitary cord. At a little over $200, the unit isn’t cheap, but considering you’ve already spent a couple of grand on the phone, watch and AirPods, they may as well look good while they’re charging. After all, Apple users are all about the aesthetics, right?

Pattern play Is there any colour combination more classic than black and white? A duo like no other, designers and decorators are often drawn to what’s known as an achromatic colour scheme for its simplicity, minimalism and timelessness.

chromatic and monochromatic are terms often confused. An achromatic colour scheme is one that possesses no hue, made up of only black, white and grey while a monochromatic colour scheme uses varying shades of a single hue, such as blue. The key to an awe-worthy achromatic scheme is to make great use of the bold contrast that black and white offer, and to look for ways to play up

shapes and patterns to bring in a sense of texture and continuity through repetition. Resene Eighth Black White is nearly as neutral as paint colours come, yet in this contemporary studio, it looks striking as the main wall colour in contrast to Resene Half Concrete flooring and when layered with Resene Blackjack designs on the breakfast bar and pendant lamps. By choosing patterns with simple motifs, you can

easily layer more than one different type into your design. To create the look of the grid design, the bar table is painted in two coats of Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel tinted to Resene Eighth Black White. Once dry, use a ruler and pencil to help you apply parallel strips of 36mm wide high quality painter’s masking tape 10mm apart, pressing firmly to ensure it adheres well. Use a mini roller with a smooth surface sleeve to apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Blackjack. Once the paint is dry, remove the masking then repeat the process again perpendicularly. The pendant lamps are painted in two coats of Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Blackjack. Once dry, use a small flat artist’s brush to paint simple randomised curved strokes. Leave approximately 5cm of space between each stroke and

continuously alter the directions. The Latin phrase ‘omne trium perfectum’ conveys a key design principle known as ‘the rule of three’. You can apply this technique with any accent colour to create a sense of balance. Paint a round tray, a small dish and a large plant pot in Resene Canary and distance them throughout the room. Because the same hue is repeated, your brain will automatically connect those painted items and you’ll be left with the sensation that the design is cohesive. Plus, spacing the items out causes the eye to move from one object to another, forcing it to take in and appreciate the whole space. If yellow doesn’t suit your tastes, swap Resene Canary for another vibrant primary colour such as Resene Havoc red or Resene Endeavour blue in keeping with the Bauhaus-like modernist feel of this design.

The Personal Nature of Personal Taste You would think that after considerable time in a business that has more than its share of opinion-based rhetoric that I would have learnt most of its important lessons, but they still keep coming. You see, I’d forgotten that everyone looks at things through their own, very unique lens and none of us are the same or exercise the same choices. So, here’s a simple scenario: it is from my role as the owner of a staging business. It’s a relatively new business having been in operation for around 15 months. It’s a business that I love and it’s given me and the team a lot of joy.

During that time, in excess of 150 stages have been completed and the value of properties being staged has ranged from $500,000 to over $6,000,000. The feedback has also ranged from absolute rapture – including offers to purchase every single staging item that’s gone into the property – to the occasional expression of disappointment. Now, a good 95% have been really happy, but 95% is not 100% and I’ve worked hard to ease the frustrations of the two – three parties who decided it wasn’t their ‘look’. But that’s the point where interpretation begins, and I’ve had to dig deep to understand and adjust accordingly.

So, I’ve removed, restaged and reimagined, worked all weekend and been at the staging sheds at 5am to help sort. And it’s worked, which I’m grateful for. So the lesson is to ask more questions, listen hard to the responses and maybe pass the baton graciously when there’s a gaping distance between preferences or there’s nothing that adequately captures a potential client’s style in five large sheds of accessories and furniture. It’s so true that life lessons are what make the world a more interesting place and space to live in, as does a beautifully presented home!

It’s no coincidence that the Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre (Metro Sports Facility) and Te Papa Hauora (Health Precinct) are co-located and positioned close to the hospital.

ne of the first official duties I had the privilege of performing was welcoming all eight of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 teams just before they played their warm-up games here. Some of those teams return to Christchurch next week for pool matches and then we have the honour of hosting a semi-final followed by the final on 3 April. We are blessed with a jewel of a venue with world-class facilities here in Hagley Oval, and this will be seen by a global broadcast audience that is seven times larger than the men’s Rugby World Cup.

To host the final is a huge coup for the city and for ChristchurchNZ, which is the host city agency. We bid to host global events such as WCWC 2022 because they are a great way to plant the seed of awareness about New Zealand’s most modern and most exciting city. Some of those viewers will be inspired to visit, to attend a conference, or to study here. In the global race to attract visitors, workers, and investment to cities around the world, Christchurch’s first step may be a young woman’s bold advance down the wicket to hoist a six over Hadlee Pavilion.

he Blueprint developed after the 2010/2011 Earthquakes saw merit in having a health precinct and a wellness/sports facility next to each other and the hospital, to ensure that the relationships between illness, health and wellness could be worked on in the best interests of our wider community. It is exciting to see that vision coming to fruition. Te Papa Hauora and its stakeholders are now actively engaging with the key participants in Parakiore to ensure that when the sports facility is completed in 2023, benefits can immediately begin to be realised. Many in Christchurch still have little comprehension of the incredible offerings that will be on site at Parakiore. The largest indoor sports facility in New Zealand, it

will deliver a wide range of sporting activities operating alongside the unique offerings of Te Papa Hauora, with significant health and wellness benefits to our community. Encouraging all to stay active, providing unique and rewarding sporting experiences, working right across the wider sports spectrum, researching the impact of sporting activity, rehabilitation after injury or illness, as well as just having a good time, are all on the table. The intent is to have numerous offerings available to all our community, not just for our sporting elite, although they, along with all the rest of us, will also be much better catered for than anywhere else in New Zealand.

niversity of Canterbury (UC) Bachelor of Product Design student Andy (Minhong) Park has developed a biocomposite wall panel that uses algae – or seaweed – as a bio-filler as part of his final-year Industrial Design project. The plasterboard has fireproofing and moisture control features and is a lowcost material that could help reduce the building industry’s carbon footprint. “Currently the building industry contributes 20 percent of our country’s carbon emissions,” Park says. “As the sector faces the challenge of reducing carbon emissions but building more houses, and with plasterboard used in almost every home, seaweed plasterboard offers a viable green alternative. “Seaweed is fast-growing at 0.5 metres per day and is capable of sequestering around 173 million metric tons of carbon annually. It’s easy to cultivate and can be farmed offshore, not competing for farmable land with other bio-based materials, making it an attractive, low-cost farming commodity. Because seaweed can absorb carbon underwater, large wall-panel manufacturers could employ seaweed farming as a carbon offset by growing it.” Seaweed bio-filler also contributes to warmer, drier, safer homes, and Park says preliminary testing indicates fire performance at the level of commercially available products.

“Seaweed has been proven to reduce ignition risks, increase flame retardancy, and promote auto-extinguishing behaviour of seaweed-based composite systems because it contains boron, a natural fire retardant. When seaweed is combined with cement, the strength of the resulting concrete is increased. Seaweed and its main constituent, alginate, have also been demonstrated to have high thermal stability and low thermal conductivity so the plasterboard would take longer to break down during a fire,” he says. “Seaweed is also recognised for its ability to absorb and release moisture and is a greener alternative to traditional passive fire protection materials due to the absence of non-recyclable elements. This also makes it able to be recycled and used as a fertiliser.” The finished seaweed plasterboard product has a glossy marble surface, coloured green, red or brown depending on the type of seaweed used. While still in the early stages, plans are under way to develop a commercialisation plan, and Kaiārahi Rangahau Māori is looking to identify suitable species of seaweed for product development and marine agriculture. The project recently won the UC Innovation Jumpstart Greatest Commercial Potential Award and accompanying $20,000 prize.

he 32,000m2 indoor sports and aquatics facility is being delivered by Crown company Ōtākaro Limited and will be operated by Christchurch City Council. Ōtākaro Chief Executive, John Bridgman, says the slides range in height from nine to 12 metres and are made up of around 800 pieces of fibreglass. “It took 10 shipping containers to get all the sections of the slides here, so it’s no surprise these are going to be the biggest and best indoor hydroslides in New Zealand. “The trapdoor hydroslide, which sends riders hurtling down at around 40 kilometres per hour, will be a drawcard for the central city.” Swimplex Aquatics Project Manager, Murray Booth, says the installation process is incredibly complex. “In some places there are seven sections of hydroslide between the ground and the sky because of the way they exit, twist, drop, then re-enter Parakiore. It’s challenging work, but we’re lucky we get to build something that is solely being put here to bring joy into people’s lives.” Ōtākaro, Christchurch City Council and Matapopore have worked closely on the design of the hydroslides. Council’s Head of Recreation, Nigel Cox, says the slides have been designed to resemble silver-bellied eels in an eel pot. “This unique and authentic colour scheme gives the hydroslides added meaning and will make the St Asaph Street entrance to Parakiore a memorable sight.” Installation of the hydroslides’ external sections will be carried out in stages over the next six months. Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre is being built by CPB Contractors. Construction is expected to be completed around the middle of 2023.

Collaborative build a beauty Battling the wild elements was just one of the challenges faced by a Christchurch construction company when extending and refurbishing a remote West Coast bach.

orel Construction’s team members are passionate about building high quality and high performance houses, so when a return client started talking about using Formance SIP panel on their bach extension at Moana, they relished the opportunity to be involved. “Early contractor engagement meant we sat and worked through technical design details with the client (who is an engineer himself) and his architect, Ian Cumberpatch Architects,” says Todd Morel. “The project was to extend and renovate the clients’ existing 90s 100m2 bach in Moana to enjoy for their retirement. The location is just stunning but it had its challenges with being remote and battling the typical West Coast weather,” he adds.

The team, led by Todd, was a mixture of Morel Construction, Canterbury and West Coast subbies and West Coast locals. An SIP panel extension more than doubled the square meterage, and was used in the floor, walls and roof structure. Todd says that due to Moana having the main train line run through the town, the level of sound proofing required was introduced with Formance SIP panels to minimise this sound and the vibrations caused by the trains travelling through. “The property has the most amazing view of the lake. To ensure the best view, the front of the house features large windows meaning you can enjoy that view from the indoors,” he adds.

The extension structure was built over a 3.5 metre bank with a mix of concrete foundations, timber poles and structural steel. This was a challenging undertaking in the 10 month build with the unpredictable wet weather in this region. The existing structure was significantly altered with all internal walls being removed and reframed with new window and door openings. The walls were clad in a mixture of cedar and E’Span and roof was clad in E’Span metal. The extension interior walls and ceiling were prefinished veneer ply which was continued into the existing renovated walls in the lounge. This was some task as all the sheets were butt fitted with no trim or quad to cover the joins in the plywood.

A University of Canterbury earthquake engineering professor has gained almost $1 million from Marsden Fund Te Pūtea Rangahau a Marsden to accelerate his research into the effects of ground-shaking caused by earthquakes.

rofessor Brendon Bradley, an award-winning earthquake engineering expert and director of Te Hirangu Rū QuakeCoRE: The New Zealand Centre for Earthquake Resilience, received $916,000 from the 2021 Marsden Fund for his project. Titled: Accelerating the advent of physics-based ground motion simulation for seismic hazard analysis, the project aim is to get to a point where scientists can provide the same sort of information as a weather forecaster. “Just like a severe weather warning, we would provide you the same information about severe ground shaking, how it varies locally in your city and suburbs, and the likely consequence to buildings,” says Professor Bradley. “The impact of this research will result from integrated modelling, and consequent holistic understanding, of the seismic rupture, crustal wave propagation and local site response dynamics that give rise to strong ground motions, leading to a ‘quiet revolution’ in this field, similar to what has occurred in weather prediction,” Professor Bradley says.
