International Women’s Day, a day marked to celebrate the women’s rights movement, has just passed. On that day I took time to think about the women in my life who inspire me. My mother, grandmother, and several close friends are all

strong characters, not afraid to stand up for what is right.

I thought of my favourite novelists, who write complex and interesting female characters that push the boundaries of gender stereotypes, the likes of Ottessa Moshfegh, Eliza Clark, and A.S King. They all show how writing has such an impact on gendered dialogue.

As girls grow up they are exposed to mixed messaging, telling them to change, to love themselves, to have body neutrality, and to pay for the way society wants them to look. All this can bring about serious mental health issues.

of people, the majority being women. Therefore, I aim to be constantly mindful of how my words may impact a reader, and whether they enforce harmful gender stereotypes, or encourage positive change.

Along with that, I need to be aware that, as women, we can, sometimes, enable the discrimination of other women simply to survive, whether that be socially or in the workplace.

My ongoing goal is to not allow this to happen, and I’d like to think other women support the same goal.

As women we must strive to uplift each other and work together to make, at the very least, our corner of the world more equal.

LEGEND THE MAKING OF A

Christchurch television producer, businesswoman and philanthropist Janine Morrell-Gunn is officially a Kiwi legend, and an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit. Lynda Papesch finds them well-deserved honours.

“What’s it like being a legend,” I asked Janine Morrell-Gunn. She laughs. “Old,” she says, quickly qualifying that she usually equates the legend concept to history, to times and people past.

Those who work with Janine awarded her the legend accolade in November 2022, when Aotearoa’s television industry gathered to celebrate their sector’s achievements. Soon after, she was also recognised in the 2023 New Year Honours, for services to children’s television and the community.

While humbled by the recognition, and proud of what she has achieved, Janine believes there’s lots more she and others

can do to help the children of today.

Children are at the heart of what she does, an inherent part of her life, whether her own four adult children, her first grandchild, making shows for children, or working for charities that support young people.

As a child, Janine wanted to either be a missionary or a TV producer. The latter won the toss.

“Being a producer is what I do, and who I am,” she explains. “From when I was 12 running the Joy club with kids from our street in my bedroom, singing and acting out stories from the bible, to organising students as the President of UCs Student Association or putting up ‘The White Lights of Hope’ after the earthquakes.”

Locally born and bred, the foundation

pupil from Hornby High also has a deep passion for Christchurch, making an early decision [with husband Jason Gunn] to return from Auckland to live in the Garden City.

“My dream is that we all get up and believe we have a part to play in this world of ours, and that we do make a di erence.”

WhitebaitMedia was born in 1998, and despite a “few lean times”, is still a creative hub for producing children’s shows. “We’re pivoting to work in digital space, while at the same time working on developing a series, more shows and shared family

viewing. I’m always on the lookout for new ideas,” says Janine.

For inspiration, she looks to what’s happening around her, to the challenges being faced by young people, and to the cultural diversity of Christchurch.

“I have always believed in amplifying the voice and showcasing the talents and creativity of young people,” she explains. Her continuing aim is to help and inspire children and youth, through television and digital content, and working with charity and community groups. “It is up to us to support them. ”

Growing up in the late 1960s and the 1970s, “I had a great childhood”, Janine remembers. “Life for young people today is completely di erent, with a very di erent set of challenges.

“Working with charities and foundations focused on young people helps bring meaning to everything you do. “I’m not alone in thinking like that. I’m always reading about fabulous people doing wonderful things to help. I often wonder how they find the time, and the strength to help those in need,” she adds.

Janine believes it is time for her generation, (people ‘my age’) to be sharing their knowledge, walking alongside, and helping young people make their way in the world.

“We’ve had our time, and it’s not all good things we’ve done. In a country of five million we have homelessness, poverty and huge anxiety.

In her continuing efforts to make a di erence, Janine looks to younger up-coming women on screen, journalists, broadcasters, actresses to keep telling great stories, inspired by the likes of actress Miranda Harcourt. “She’s always active on Instagram, promoting the positive, people’s successes, and she has a political voice as well”.

A self-confessed ‘active relaxer’, personally Janine is working on achieving greater balancing with work and family, while continuing charities and spending time with her granddaughter and in the vege garden. “It’s the journey, not the destination,” she adds.

“I believe that what happens to you happens for you.”

HISTORY A RICH MARITIME

Lyttelton ‘will come to life’ with the inaugural ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix Christchurch, on 18-19 March 2023. The event won’t be the first major regatta on the harbour, as Haydn Rawstron explains.

Six months after the ‘First Four’ Canterbury Association ships arrived at Lyttelton, the steadily growing settlement held its first sporting event, a regatta in the harbour. It marked Queen Victoria’s 32nd birthday, Saturday, 24 May 1851.

Charlotte Godley described the celebrations at length in a letter home to her mother in Wales: the day was actually ‘too lovely, not a breath of wind all day, so that the sailing boats never started’! Instead, the Regatta [sic] consisted solely of ‘boat-races’.

The first match was for ‘five-oared whale boats’, four of which were Māori boatsand-oarsmen. ‘Only one white crew pulled against them’ and it was easily beaten. The Māori accomplished the feat ‘in remarkably short time and came in very fresh, and in great delight’.

Charlotte continues: ‘The Victoria won, belonging to a chief, who did not go in her, but walked up and down, telling people he was just like Mr. Godley, and only looked on.’

Her e ervescent account of the various races and events reveals that Māori and Pākehā were both participants and spectators in the overall entertainment, a day of mutual celebration in games, feasting, and dancing. She summed up, ‘in short it was very successful, and everyone thoroughly tired next day’, no one probably more so than her little son, Arthur.

Boats, models of boats and stories of boats were his passion during his two years in Lyttelton.

The 1851 regatta reveals positive, early relations between Māori and Pākehā, shaped possibly by the cauldron-like reality of Lyttelton Harbour, in which Lyttelton was the centre of Canterbury social life. Constant daily contact occurred between the two cultures, helping mould together the native and the newcomer in the infant Canterbury, in a way that was never again emulated, once ‘Canterbury’ departed over the hills and far away. It is why we should all treasure those formative years in Lyttelton going forward, and research them widely.

The movingly all-inclusive, communal celebration of ‘regatta day’ in 1851, perhaps o ers inspiration for Lyttelton throughout the rest of this year. This month, for instance, one can also celebrate the 175th anniversary of the choosing of names for the new settlement and its principal town: ‘Canterbury’ and ‘Christchurch’.

On 27 March 1848, these names were proposed, at the first management

committee meeting of the London-based Canterbury Association, by John Robert Godley, who two years later sailed for Canterbury as AgentGeneral and ‘founder’ of the Settlement. Education was at the forefront of the vision for Canterbury together with moral responsibility, and these qualities are reflected in the names, themselves. At the time of that March 1848 meeting, membership of the Canterbury Association totalled 50 bishops, noblemen and gentlemen, a remarkable collection of responsibility, education, and culture. All were reformers in various fields. All shared a common interest in colonial reform.

Their contribution to the aura of Canterbury’s first generations is commemorated with place names within the Lyttelton cauldron: Mt Cavendish, Godley Head, Adderley Head, Charteris Bay, and Cholmondeley Children’s Home. Also in Lyttelton Township, where most names - Simeon Quay, Godley Quay, Coleridge Terrace, Sumner Road - are to be found. Memorials to the eight members who were incumbent bishops are reflected in principal street names, commemorating the Archbishops of Canterbury and Dublin, and Bishops of Exeter, London, Oxford, Ripon, St David’s, and Winchester.

THIS YEAR SEES TWO FURTHER LYTTELTON-RELATED ANNIVERSARIES.

1) The three Canterbury Association surveyors arrived in December 1848, 175 years ago: Thomas Cass who did the first detailed survey of the Harbour; Capt. Joseph Thomas, who surveyed Lyttelton, and his assistant, Charles Torlesse.

2) The 150th anniversary of The University of Canterbury's founding occurs on 16 June 2023. The name 'Lyttelton' is also central to this celebration since Lord Lyttelton of Hagley Hall in England played a seminal role in the establishment of The University. A generation earlier, this same Lord Lyttelton had been Chairman of the Canterbury Association's Management Committee.

Pouring paint on to canvas and paper for almost two decades, Marie Le Lievre’s exhibition, Net Let, opened at the Jonathan Smart Gallery in March.

Describing her materials and painting processes as limitless in their possibilities, she explains, “I pour the paint with the canvas on the floor and let it have its say.

“The medium of natural oil tints has this potential to surprise and the temperature and climate in the room a ects the oils merging as they do di erent things. It is a fluid movement about chaos and order. It is lyrical and possessing di erent energies that capture both the unknown and the material aspects of our world.”

SHE’S SO FINE

Returning to the Ashburton Art Gallery in 2023 as the Premier Award Winner of the 2022 Zonta Ashburton Female Art Awards, (ZAFAA), performance arti , Audrey Baldwin opens a solo exhibition, This Is Fine, Everything Is Fine.

The exhibition is an important element of the annual award, acknowledging the contribution women make to the greater arts discourse, aligning the award with the values of Zonta International, advancing the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy.

Now in its seventh year, in 2023, ZAFAA received 87 entries and shortlisted 29 artists qualifying for the Premier Award and 13 for the Young Generation Award for female artists, aged 16 to 20. In discussion with Baldwin, she emphasises its importance as an event and the issues it addresses. “It brings together a wide range of artists and deals to the reality that there are so many female graduates from the University Of Canterbury School Of Fine Arts however, this doesn’t translate to dealer gallery representation.”

“ZAFAA provides an opportunity to build on one’s practice and addresses agendas of inequality - and it is local, representing women in Canterbury with a rotating panel of impressive judges that has included New Zealand artists like Julia Morison. Being selected in 2022 was really special, also giving me a chance to meet mentors and other artists.”

Baldwin’s exhibition, THIS IS FINE, EVERYTHING IS FINE, has its origins in an online meme from 2016 of a dog in a burning room, reassuring itself that everything is fine.

“It is about existential exhaustion, trying to survive in a global pandemic, the state of the global economy and commenting on the frustrations of it all.

“Each of the works responds to some kind of a coping mechanism or symptom. It is about work, worth, and productivity and the pressure and expectation to manage these things. It is also an exhibition of puns and people love to hate puns. For example: The photograph, Net Worth is essentially about your body and productivity. A women’s body is related to what it looks like and labour is related to our worth under capitalism. We don’t get paid for making our children’s lunch and there is no means of escape.”

JAMES ROBINSON: WITCHES’ SONG

His work was singled out by art critic Warwick Brown in 2009, ‘its emotionally charged content impossible to ignore’.

Robinson’s current exhibition, Witches’ Song at PGgallery192 takes its title from a Marianne Faithfull song on her 1979 album Broken English, the artist singling out this particular song as he remembers it was played a lot by his mother. “I heard that song when I was making these new works. They reminded me of my mum’s death during the first lockdown in February 2021.

“My mother was a fantastically strong individual, a feminist, and a social worker who was out there changing the world. But having two boys to care for, as well as being

an early feminist with a family, saving the world, for me, it was a troubled relationship, encapsulating a lot of conflicting concerns and interests.”

“Yet, hearing that Marianne Faithfull album while I was making these new works, I just remembered that she was a strong influence in my life and that I was loved. That was an emotional moment. It created an awareness that I loved everything I got from her. I talk about my mother, but reallyit is about me. I have been parading my art around everywhere and trying to make up for a broken family.”

Robinson says that the paintings in Witches’ Song are experimental freehanging works that, although individual,

oscillate against one another, putting their secret pieces together, and as with most of my practice, it is some kind of internal sequence of events. I do make pictures... and I don’t deliberately make them.

“Rather, I make them fall apart and then I reintegrate them and they do this performance. It is an unconscious thing. My stu is quite busy but the text on my paintings is in whispered narratives.”

GALLERY GLIMPSE

Kushana Bush’s Glukupikron (pictured below) is currently on display in the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū’s, Perilous: Unheard Stories from the Collection. Bush completed the painting during lockdown in 2020, and in an interview for The Press with freelance arts writer, Nadine Rubin Nathan, she set the atmosphere for Glukupikron, working from her bedroom and listening to podcasts about the Black Death in Europe in the 14th century. Glukupikron depicts two charging bulls threatening everything in their immediate sight, yet lyrically it is documented and influenced by Bush’s response to the influence of Persian miniatures, Japanese ukiyo-e, and medieval illuminated manuscripts.

JACOB YIKES, ESCAPISM

Urban artist Jacob Yikes follows the success of his 2022 exhibition, Even in Darkness, with Escapism, new paintings described as extending concepts of the subconscious and altered realities that inform the imagery of his previous exhibition. Arts writer and curator Dr. Reuben Woods comments that as surrealist painting they continue “to push Jacob’s mediums through new surfaces and formats.”

For Yikes, he sees the success of Escapism as, in part, an outcome of having a bigger studio. “I’ve been able to work on all of these paintings at once to some degree. Therefore, there is a real sense of cohesion throughout. They really feel like a solid body of work. They are far more refined and detailed and will take the viewer on a bit of a journey through what my mind looks like after a year of isolation in my studio.”

“It’s hard to explain what was going on in my mind when I began these paintings, but they have all come together. I have been able to work on all of these at once and there is a real sense of cohesion and continuation, and I’ve found myself wanting to move away from the cartoon-style surrealism I am known for into a more realistic approach to a subject that is internally produced,” says Yikes.

“Yeah, the last show was a great turn out and I was overwhelmed by the support and sales. I think for me it kind of reassured me that this path I am on with my studio-based work is the right one.”

Before there was Post-Modernism there was European Modernism: Picasso and abstraction and although perceived to have failed to influence contemporary art in Aotearoa until the late 1950s, the Christchurch Art Gallery’s, Ink on Paper: Aotearoa New Zealand Printmakers of the Modern Era verifies that Modernism was an influential presence as early as the 1920s. Ink on Paper is a revelation about printmaking, revealed through dramatic, intimate and sublime works on paper, ranging from the obscure to the famous, including, for example, Adele Younghusband (1878 – 1969) and Frances Hodgkins (1869-1947). In a series of new paintings, Mark Soltero sustains the visual conversations that continue to inform his work through marks, gestures and organic shapes and structures, as compelling in their detail as they are evocative of a larger imagined world to which they appear to belong. At Eliza’s Manor boutique accommodation change is afoot. Owner Francesca Voza is excited about the rebranding about to happen in their restaurant, creating an elegant continental-style bistro. The restaurant is to be renamed The Butcher and The Bees.

You would right in surmising that ‘The Butcher’ hints at delectable cuts of meat. “We will be sourcing di erent cuts of steak, as well as lamb, chicken, and pork from boutique New Zealand suppliers so that we can showcase local produce to our diners,” says Francesca.

“Our steaks will be cooked over charcoal to enhance the flavour and served with duck fat wa es and an array of interesting side dishes.”

So what about ‘The Bees’ part of the name? Eliza’s has its own beehives, and new Head Chef Adam Harrison (pictured) is already incorporating honey into the hotel’s breakfast dishes. House-made crumpets with honey butter, or Eggs Benedict with honey-glazed-bacon, are just two of the innovative dishes on o er. Local and sustainable are by-words for Eliza’s Manor, where there are not only beehives onsite, but all kinds of micro-herbs, vegetables and edible plants that can be used in their cuisine.

“Chef Adam is known for being a forager so our garden is a constant source of delights for him. He’s passionate about our new direction, and so are we,” says Francesca.

dandru DEALING TO

The most common types of dandru are the dry and flaky, or the sticky and malodourous. Both can be di cult to treat, so it is advisable to not delay in seeking help.

Dr Padmaja Redekar of Hairmantra, Hair and Scalp Clinic, says dandru occurs for many reasons.

In 2017, The Canterbury Brain Collective Ltd (CBC) - a registered charity and partnership between Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Canterbury, and Dementia Canterburywas established. Its goal was to develop a wellness centre for local people living with neurological conditions that would help them live their lives to their fullest potential.

In June 2022, BrainTree opened to the public. The spacious and inviting state-ofthe-art complex comprises tenant o ce spaces, a retail shop, a gym, yoga and dance studio, large seminar/meeting rooms, a wholefoods commercial café, an extensive outdoor deck and internal meeting places. Leesa, Eilish, Ange, Hazel and Phil are the friendly team onsite, and their goal is to give everyone a great experience to ensure they keep returning to the centre.

Here are some daily habits that may help you achieve more happiness in your life.

BREATHE DEEPLY

You’re tense, your shoulders are tight, and you feel as though you just might “lose it.” We all know that feeling.

Instinct may tell you to take a long, deep breath to calm yourself down. Turns out, that instinct is a good one. Research supports the fact that slow breathing and deep breathing exercises can help reduce stress.

If you’re having a hard time taking slow, deliberate breaths, try counting to five in your head with each inhale and exhale.

ACKNOWLEDGE THE UNHAPPY MOMENTS

A positive attitude is generally a good thing, but bad things happen to everyone. It’s just part of life.

If you get some bad news, make a mistake, or just feel like you’re in a funk, don’t try to pretend you’re happy.

Acknowledge the feeling of unhappiness, letting yourself experience it for a moment.

Then shift your focus toward what made you feel this way and what it might take to recover.

Would a deep breathing exercise help? A long walk outside? Talking it over with someone?

Let the moment pass and take care of yourself. Remember, no one’s happy all the time.

Taking the time to help others will make both them and you happy.

Acting with kindness has been found to increase the release of oxytocin, “the love hormone”, in our brains and that’s why we feel a surge of happiness.

Write down all the things you love doing, and what makes you happy, then choose one thing that you can start doing.

Laughter really is the best medicine.

Studies have shown that laughter lowers our levels of cortisol, the “stress hormone”, boosts our mood, relieves pain, improves our immune system, and stimulates the release of endorphins the “feel-good hormone.”

Laughter is good for your health, and draws you back to the present moment. You’re not thinking about the past or the future, you’re lost in the moment.

Heading into Easter, thoughts turn to chocolate, Easter eggs, foil-wrapped bunnies and the like.

Most of those have a high processed sugar content, however there are ways and means of having treats without them being too sucrose laden. Try making your own bliss balls, using the recipe below, and swapping in/out your favourite fruits. You can even make them egg-shaped instead of circular.

INGREDIENTS

150g almonds

12 pitted dates

30g Goji berries (or redcurrants)

2 Tbsp cacao or cocoa powder

40g shredded coconut

2 Tbsp maple syrup

2 Tbsp white or black chia seeds

METHOD

MAKES 9 / PREP TIME – ABOUT 1 HOUR

Process almonds in a food processor until finely chopped. Add the dates, Goji berries, cacao powder, shredded coconut, and maple syrup, until smooth and well combined. 1

Place white or black chia seeds on a plate. Roll 2 tablespoon portions of the mixture into balls, and roll in the chia seeds to coat evenly. Refrigerate for at least an hour to set. 2

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Tip: Substitute dates with succulent dried apricots, and chia seeds with toasted coconut. 3

Impress your loved ones with a gorgeous strawberry tart, perfect as a centrepiece dessert for home dining. This delectable treat is crafted from a buttery pastry base and topped with luscious crème pâtissière.

INGREDIENTS

125g softened

unsalted butter

85g icing sugar

1 egg

200g plain flour

100g strawberry jam

FOR THE CRÈME PÂTISSIÈRE

300ml milk

150ml double cream

1 Tsp vanilla extract

METHOD

1

3 egg yolks

60g caster sugar

3 1/2 Tbsp cornflour

500g strawberries

2 Tbsp apricot jam

50g butter, cubed and softened

Mix butter and sugar until smooth. Add egg and mix, then gradually add flour until dough forms. Use hands to shape and chill for 30 mins.

Roll pastry into 26cm circle and place in 23cm fluted tart tin. Prick base and chill for 30 mins. Bake pastry at 200C for 15 mins with baking parchment, then remove parchment paper and bake for 15-20 mins more until golden and crisp. Cool in tin.

To make the crème pâtissière, warm milk, cream, and vanilla in a pan over a medium heat then whisk yolks, sugar and cornflour. Mix a quarter of cream with egg mix and combine with the rest in the pan. Cook and stir over a low-medium heat for 5-8 mins until thick. Let cool for 15 minutes, then whisk in butter until smooth, cover and chill in fridge. Spread strawberry jam on pastry, pipe crème pâtissière in a spiral pattern, and arrange strawberries. Warm apricot jam, brush over strawberries.

The interior walls are clad in solid timber T.G&V wall panelling and fitted with two double power points and two internal LED

lights. Outside you will find two external LED lights and a caravan plug. “We also o er decking choices for the cabins in small, medium, and large, and there are kitchen, shower, and toilet options too,” says Jess.

Home decorating can be a process, but with a carefully curated colour palette, a bit of creativity, and a ‘number eight wire’ attitude, you can make one special item shine or bridge the gap while saving up for the rest of your furniture.

A dado rail can add character to a room and create a natural break between colours, allowing you to use one colour for the bottom portion of a space and a di erent colour for the top. In most cases, using a darker hue for the lower section creates a grounding e ect. Adding accents in orange, gold, and yellow tones can bridge the gap in the spectrum between red and green tones in a complementary colour scheme.

Paint is a budget-conscious

decorator’s best friend, allowing you to match furniture and decor or get more life out of pieces you already own. Use Resene Lustacryl enamel, which has a durable, semi-gloss finish that’s appropriate for furniture, to paint table legs and upcycled pieces.

Using the ‘rule of three’ principle, ensure that each accent colour you use occurs in at least three places throughout your space. By using Resene paints to colour each of the hard surfaces in a room, it’s easy to make sure each colour is used three times. If you are struggling to find a piece of artwork that matches your space, use Resene testpots in colours from your palette to create your own. With these tips, you can create a cohesive space that makes your statement piece shine.

Changing old cars to go green, or “conversion,” is a better option, he believes.

The previous generation Honda Civic Type R was fast and serious fun, however, I wasn’t overly keen on its “boy racer” rear wing.

Now the latest FL5, gives a more “grown up” vibe to the sixth instalment of the Civic Type R bloodline. The FL5 is longer, wider and sits 30mm lower than the FK8 it replaces, and the body, while still looking quintessentially Type R, is 15 percent sti er.

Power and torque for the K20CI VTEC turbo four-cylinder engine has risen by 7kW and 20Nm thanks to a revised ECU and larger intercooler. Inside there is a tonne of red trim and the lighter red bucket sports seats feature redesigned bolsters which hold you more firmly in place.

On the move, the FL5 is a weapon. It feels just that little bit sharper and at high rpm, things sound angrier. The driving position is nigh on perfect and its eagerness to devour twisting tarmac cannot be understated.

Every little piece of the drive, from the throw of the six-speed manual box to the directness of the steering is certainly better all-around than the FK8. And that was epic to begin with.

Basically, the new Type R hits the right mix between out-and-out performance and dayto-day usability.

This one’s a good one.
