A
tribute concert for the victims of the Christchurch terror attacks earlier this month was about “moving out of the darkness and into the light”, according to MC of the event and New Zealander of the Year, Mike King. Just over a month after the tragedy, more than 28 of New Zealand’s most beloved entertainers banded together to perform to a crowd of close to 20,000 at Christchurch Stadium. Dave Dobbyn was the first performer to hit the stage; the music veteran drawing thousands to their feet with Welcome Home, a 2006 song written as a message against racism which has become somewhat of an anthem for the country in the wake of the massacre. ‘Home’ became somewhat of a recurring theme at the You Are Us Aroha Nui concert. “Home is not a place, it’s the people that make a place home,” Shihad lead singer Jon Toogood announced to the crowd before launching into the band’s 1996 hit song, Home Again. The Christchurch Combined Choir performed three songs, joined by JasonABC AUDITED Kerrison and Sol3 Mio respectively. The event held special significance for Sol3 Mio, who performed at the event, after the uncle of singer Pene Pati’s Egyptian-born Kiwi wife was one of those shot in the mosque massacre. “This song speaks of a world where every man, woman and child lives in peace ... that world is here, that world is Aotearoa,” Pene AUDITED says. As the lyrics to Welcome Home tell us, “Maybe we’ll find that new way. So welcome home, see I made a space for you now. Welcome home from the bottom of our heart.”

A MONSTER TOUR Hugh Cornwell caused a stir in 1990 when he left the punk/new wave band he co-founded, The Stranglers. But the UK songwriter has successfully gone out there alone, forging a solo career that’s taken him around the world. Now he’s returning to Aotearoa for a three date tour with his band this May after a decade away. What can Christchurch fans expect from your Monster tour? There will be two halves, the first is a collection of solo catalogue songs including half of the Monster album; the second set is a romp through the Stranglers hits. How would you describe your music today as a solo artist? Probably garage/punk/psychedelic/ pop!
What motivates you to get out of bed each day? The fact that I still can. Over your 40 year career with the Stranglers and as a solo artist what is your most favourite song? Get a grip on yourself: it was the first song I wrote and the first hit. What advice do you have for someone setting out on a career in music? Listen to your instincts and don’t give up the day job.
Home demonstration?
No problem!
Who has been (or still is) the biggest inspiration in your life? Arthur Lee, who was the lead singer/ songwriter with the band Love. What is the most memorable moment in your music career? When I heard Get a grip on the radio for the first time. Do you have a message for your Christchurch fans? Feel free to sing along, as I may need help with the words!

Love the skin you’re in H&B is now offering Medical Dermal Needling in-salon today. Dermal needling serves two main functions; firstly, it stimulates epidermal growth to provide stronger and healthier skin; secondly, it stimulates the production of collagen, making skin tighter and firmer.
ermal needling uses a specialised instrument that contains incredibly fine medical needles to create micro punctures on the skin’s surface layer. This triggers the skin’s natural collagen production and restorative processes. The treatment is minimally invasive however, it has been found safer than some other skin treatments such as chemical peels, laser treatments, etc. If you have scars, stretch marks, fine lines and wrinkles, or want to give your skin some firming, dermal needling could be for you! Dermal needling can help to stimulate collagen, increase skin elasticity, soften fine lines and reduce the appearance of scarring, pigmentation and sun damage. It also allows treatment products to be better absorbed by the skin. As every client is different, H&B requires you have a quick consultation with one of their amazing beauticians beforehand, as they can tailor a treatment plan to your skin needs. Contact H&B on 03 381 8939, info@hairart.co.nz, www.hairart. co.nz, or pop into the salon at 96 Cranford Street.

OVEN GLOVES TO DANCING SHOES Kiwi chef personality, entrepreneur and healthy food whizz Nadia Lim is taking off her oven gloves and stepping into her dancing shoes to take on channel Three’s Dancing with the Stars NZ – and it’s all for a great cause.
N
adia Lim first attracted attention in the culinary arena after she took home
first place in the second series of MasterChef New Zealand and has since become an
advocate for wholesome food and healthy eating, which led her to founding home meal kit delivery service My Food Bag. The chef has announced that she will be donating funds raised from votes from national food education charity Garden to Table. Providing food-based life skills to school children years three to six at 176 schools throughout the country, Garden to Table’s goal is to raise enough money to support communities in higher need,
so their students can learn and share the skills and knowledge of growing, harvesting and cooking. Nadia is well known for her ‘Nude Food’ philosophy, which promotes fresh, healthy eating and ethical food practices. She chose to support the charity because she believes providing children with the essential nutritional and practical skills is fundamental. “Teaching kids to love gardening and cooking is absolutely one way that we can give them skills to help look after their mental wellbeing both throughout their childhood and beyond into their adult life.” Dancing with the Stars NZ’s brand-new season premiered on Sunday 14 April and will be on screens every Sunday (7pm) and Monday (7:30pm) on Three.

STRETTON’S SARTORIAL SUCCESS By Melinda Collins
Her name graces some of the country’s most elegantly feminine designs, forming a sartorial success story Annah Stretton has quite famously built up from nothing. It’s the story of a young mum from rural Waikato who started a fashion line from a dairy farm, making a million dollars in its first year.
A

to daughter Sammi, she’s still as passionate today about everything she has turned her talented hand to.

Can you tell us about your latest collection Undone Glamour and the inspiration behind it? The collection is taking its style cues from that allimportant Art Deco era; an era that signalled the winds of change for a women’s potential and place in the world and saw hemlines and hair length start to rise up in response. There was a freedom of spirit and celebration that infused the fashion of the day that will forever be synonymous with glamour and that made it perfect for the ‘glamour your way’ feel that we wanted the winter collection to have. The collection uses a jewel-like colour palette of cerise, dark sapphire and emerald green and pairs that with the bold and beautiful floral and geometric patterns in velvet and other beautiful fabrications that the Annah Stretton brand has become famous for. Design wise; there is a rich array of dresses, wide length pants, jumpsuits and two-piece outfits cut to suit the widest possible range of body shapes and sizes. How would you define your design philosophy? The Annah Stretton brand has always been about bringing colour, femininity and fabulousness to every woman’s special occasion and work wardrobe. At long last, we are living in the age of beauty where youth and body size no longer define what is beautiful. Today beauty is about being comfortable in our own skin and celebrating our body by feeling and looking fabulous. I like to think that our brand has always been in this space, with designs and styling that celebrate the beauty in all women. Can you tell us how you were able to establish yourself in such a cutthroat industry? Getting established was the easy bit. Back in 1992, the competitor landscape was reasonably onedimensional. There was no online shopping, no international retail chains and very little product was being manufactured offshore, particularly at the top end of town. Success was all about establishing a strong retail footprint and building a loyal following through the design and manufacture of a well-made product. Fast forward to 2019 and life in the fashion industry couldn’t be more different. Competition is global and retailing is a 24/7 operation. New Zealand women can shop anytime, anywhere, with any label at any price point. To remain in business requires constant
vigilance and reinvention. Nothing is as it was and the future demands that no complacency ever slips into a business. New Zealand has seen so many great labels suffer and ultimately close their doors as retail therapy goes online and goes global. Reinvention and a customer-centric focus is the key to surviving and thriving in this industry, but it is never a guarantee of recurring success. In an industry that is said to take no prisoners, how have you not only been able to be an incredible success, but been able to remain current? I guess that comes down to how you measure success. For me, success has never been about ‘the Boat, the Bach and the BMW’ to coin a phrase. Instead, it’s always been about making a contribution far broader than the delivery of a healthy bottom line. Right from the very beginning, the philanthropic heart of the company has been beating loudly. The staff, the customers and the community causes that we support have always been so much more important than the dollars. As a country, we are now starting to acknowledge the value of our human capital, but as a business we’ve been in this space for the last ten years. You only need to look at the average tenure of my retail and head office staff to see this ethos in action. That same loyalty has also been present amongst all the wonderful women who continue to love the label. Their faithful support has enabled me to set up my charitable foundation and begin to make an impact on some of New Zealand’s more significant social challenges. Why do you think people have connected so strongly with what you do? Possibly because we are so much more than a fashion label. Everything we do is about making a bigger contribution in the community. When women buy from us they enable me to advance the social causes that have reached epic proportions in New Zealand. The social divide and therefore social challenges that we now face are significant. The only way forward is to apply new thinking and in doing so give hope and purpose to those who have never had any. We all deserve to travel down a pathway that brings us joy, and I’m absolutely passionate about making this happen for the socially disadvantaged women that I work with.

t was a song that just came to me in the middle of the night – the beat melody and lyrics – I then left it for 12 months, before co-writing it in Nashville with Phil Barton and Lindsay Rimes was the producer.” Kaylee performed with Keith singing We Were Us in his Australian tour in 2014 and in Wellington in 2016. She returned from the exciting London C2C Country to Country Music Festival in London last month – the first Kiwi to do so. Keith Urban starred there and says he loved the song written in his honour! “Keith is just the coolest – so freakishly talented,” she says. “He is one of the best guitarists in the world – just the coolest guy, so easy going and very down to earth. With my song Keith I have been amazed at the response from people that aren’t country music lovers at all. They say there is something about that song.” En route home Kaylee stopped by Nashville, where she spends the summers honing her songstress skills and working on a new album, before returning to New Zealand. Since the age of four Kaylee Bell – yes, her real name – has been crazy about country. She has been Australia’s country music sweetheart since moving there at 21, after winning the Gold Guitar in Gore. She won the prestigious Toyota Star Maker Competition in Tamworth Australia 2013. Keith Urban himself won the same award in 1990. Kaylee has since had ten top-10 singles in Australia, although, for the last two years she’s called Auckland home. In 2014 Kaylee won best female Country Artist’ at the NZCM Awards and Best NZ Country Album Vodafone NZ Music Awards. ‘Pieces’, co-written with Jared Porter, won NZ APRA ‘Best Country Song’ in 2015, also became number one on the Australian charts and won the grand prize in the prestigious US Unsigned Only competition. LeAnn Rimes, Faith Hill and Shania have all been influences. Country music hasn’t been a big thing in our music history, but Kaylee says there’s more awareness now and the South Island is where it’s at. “You can’t like what you haven’t heard!” is her advice to those who aren’t hooked on the genre yet. Heartfelt was her debut album and Kaylee is recording her next self-titled album this year – a balance of country and pop, “with a heart and a story”. pushing the boundaries of style and design, and bedrooms are on Gavin’s mind. “Our bedroom ranges are very popular, there’s such a lack of good quality bedroom furniture with some flair to it.” Flair is Station Road’s specialty. No matter what look you may be going for, its vast catalogue will have it. A ‘French’ look, with soft lines, embellishment and slightly more feminine is very popular. The deco, Parisian Salon feel, is a winter favourite. Perhaps a more ‘Glamour’ look – blacks, whites, and silver or gold with elegant, fine lines is what you are going for. “Then there is what we might call a ‘plantation’ look with a resort feel,” Gavin says, featuring darker timbers, strong shapes, perhaps with woven cane. Or possibly an ‘artisan’ look is more your style; imperfect materials – knotted timbers, exposed metals – but beautifully crafted. These looks and more are currently in store at 148 Victoria Street and on the website at www.stationroad.co.nz.

The Cathedral Grammar School SCOTT THELNING PRINCIPAL
‘Every child. Every day.’ This simple yet powerful statement is the essence of my educational philosophy. It seems so obvious, yet in a school setting, can get lost in the pursuit of greatness, narrow measures of success and the needs of adults. At The Cathedral Grammar School your child is truly at the heart of the matter as we set about nurturing them, knowing them and growing them in a holistic and heart focused manner. Of course, academic performance and high expectations are key, but not at the expense of their wellbeing and the development of skills and qualities to thrive in a challenging and evolving world.

t The Cathedral Grammar School your child is in an environment that values their heart as well as their head. It’s the Grammar Way. The girls at our school enjoy the best of both worlds. In the Preschool and Junior School, girls receive the benefit of all that co-education has to offer. As they get older, their learning styles can start to differ from the boys. So, for Years 4-8, they are split into two separate schools. Based in their own respective classrooms within the school grounds, the girls and boys schools work independently but are closely aligned. This means the school can specifically tailor learning. The Head Girl, Lucy, is the third of three girls in the Vance family to attend Cathedral Grammar and relishes the unique Cathedral Grammar culture. “The whole Girls’ School is basically a big family and everyone supports each other and they know everyone.” The prime inner city position means they make the most of the wonderful nearby resources. The girls head to Ara Institute for Engineering and Food Technology, Christ’s College to study Hard Materials and some students are involved in an Enrichment Programme at Tūranga, the new central city library. This is an exciting opportunity and aims to enrich and extend the school’s current learning programmes inside and outside the classroom. Every week the girls and boys come together for what we call an Hour of Power, where they’ll study a myriad of subjects such as Robotics, Coding, Electronic Music 101, Collage Fabric and Food Art and French. They also join forces for extension classes in Maths and English, for chapel, assemblies, sport and fitness. Recognising that a well-rounded character is just as important as academic success, all students are involved in community service, helping to enrich the lives of others. “We would love your daughter or son to be part of our community, our family.”

Medbury School IAN MACPHERSON HEADMASTER
While Medbury School enjoys a strong reputation as a progressive preparatory school for boys locally, nationally and internationally, the School has at its core, an engaging family feel, which extends both within and beyond the school gate. Traditional Christian values, supported by a strong emphasis on manners and respect, underpin the School’s mission ‘to unlock the potential of every boy’. Now in his second year as Headmaster, Mr Ian Macpherson has overseen Medbury join the International Boys’ Schools Coalition (IBSC) and partner with Swinburne University to establish programmes to support emotional intelligence.
ith 30 years as a specialist in boys’ education, Mr Macpherson and has seen first-hand the difference a boy-friendly approach has on maximising academic engagement as well as social and emotional development. “A boy with values is a boy set for life. The School motto, Play the Game, reinforces the standard for all student behavior and attitudes, whether in the classroom, on the playing field, in social interaction and activities, or beyond the school gates,” Mr Macpherson says. The School’s Boarding House is an integral part of school life and home to boarders from different areas of New Zealand and overseas. “Helping boys master skills, which help them tackle greater obstacles and ask more ‘why’ questions, drives our curriculum development and implementation programmes,” he says. “We also value the learning opportunities that take place beyond the classroom and Medbury boys are truly blessed to be extended in so many ways.” Medbury’s partnership with Swinburne University of Technology is a new and exciting initiative aimed at developing emotional intelligence (EI) via the AristotleEI programme. “When a Medbury boy leaves for secondary school, he does so with an education equipping him for life in the 21st century. He will leave us a well-rounded individual; a motivated and independent learner; and a critical thinker with high self-esteem, who reacts to others and the changing world around him, with confidence and good grace,” Mr Macpherson says. “Friendships, values and a quiet selfconfidence that comes with sound preparation, will provide an invaluable foundation for his journey ahead. “Selecting a school to meet your high expectations and your son’s needs is important. I would like to invite you to Medbury to show you first-hand what sets our school apart as an exceptional Australasian preparatory school.”

St Margaret’s College DIANA PATCHETT EXECUTIVE PRINCIPAL
St Margaret’s College is the best of both worlds – it’s a modern school with incredible facilities and opportunities for girls, founded on traditional family and Christian values. It’s a traditional school, rich in culture and heritage, filled by modern girls who can realise gender equality in their future and modern families who share high expectations for their girls. These expectations are not just academic ones, for today’s parents know the importance of developing the so-called soft skills in setting each girl up for a bright future. St Margaret’s continues to be amongst the top academic schools in the country while giving our girls a rich and rewarding involvement in sports and the arts to an elite level.

aking that all important decision around schooling is one no parent takes lightly. It is a significant investment, but one that your child will reap the rewards of for the rest of their life. “No two children are the same, and that is a good thing,” Executive Principal Diana Patchett says. “At SMC, we celebrate diversity, we amplify it, for we know that each girl comes to us with her own gifts and abilities, and that it is our privilege to uncover those, and more, to set her up for success, whatever success looks like for her, as she moves through our school and then out into the world.” Knowing and playing to your strengths, being an open-minded and flexible thinker, having confidence in your own skills and abilities, practising well-developed interpersonal and collaborative skills to be able to work well with others, and perhaps most importantly, demonstrating the resilience to embrace failure as a necessary means to realising a solution to new challenges – these are invaluable life skills for all ages. It is the aspiration of St Margaret’s College to set its students up for success. The development of these powerful graduate attributes is intrinsic to the academic, social, physical and spiritual programmes they afford the girls in their care. In this way, any concerns for the unknown aspects of their future can become a tailwind that propels them forward and not a headwind to hold them back. St Margaret’s College looks forward to welcoming you to the school, so you can experience first-hand how they can set your daughter up for success. hristine is a great believer in girls and boys being educated alongside one another. “I went to a co-educational school myself and believe it is the best way to prepare young people for their future.” She is proud of the response shown by St Andrew’s College students in the wake of the recent terror attack. “Our students showed great compassion and leadership in support of a number of initiatives in Christchurch, with three of our Year 12 students organising the March for Love. We have seen a genuine desire from students to make their world of the future a better place.” Students at St Andrew’s are encouraged to strive for excellence in their academic, sporting and cultural pursuits, with their successes widely celebrated. Christine was delighted with the College’s outstanding academic success in 2018, which she says is up there with the best schools in the country. “A group of 24 students achieved 43 New Zealand Scholarships between them, including 13 Outstanding Scholarships. Three of our Year 13 students gained a place in the top 50 students nationwide, including College Dux, Russell Boey, who was named as one of the top 11 scholars in New Zealand. ” St Andrew’s is renowned for the wide range of sporting and cultural pursuits on offer. of timing The art
By Rhonda Mitchell
If, as Thomas Hobbes once said “Hell is truth seen too late,” then realising you sold your cherished and thriving business at the wrong time must be at least akin to a brush undefended with a Komodo Dragon.
D
amien Fahey and Sam Cherry of Tabak Business Sales know that there is art in timing – when to buy and when to sell, and they are experts in identifying those moments for transition. “It is not simply reaching retirement age that prompts the decision to sell a business,” Damien says. “In fact, that group accounts for only around one third of our sales.” Often owners have simply lost their passion for the business, discovered a new opportunity,
have hit their own glass ceiling, or company success has prompted the need for major restructuring. Health, personal and family needs make up the balance of reasons for deciding on sale. Whatever the reason, Damien and Sam emphasise the benefits to be gained by chatting to them early, “as soon as it crosses your mind that you might like to get out, talk to us – we’ll go through the ‘why’ with you and we can then advise you on both the ‘when’ and the ‘how’,” Sam says.
A chat with Damien and Sam doesn’t always lead to straight to the market. “Sometimes we establish an owner is just really tired and after a decent break they fall back in love with the business,” Damien says. However, once the desire to sell is certain, long experience has illustrated the danger to Damien and Sam of getting your timing wrong, which is influenced by both internal and external factors. If an owner has reached boredom stage, and is not giving 100 percent energy to drive the business forward, it can often stall or go backwards and is no longer such a great asset to sell. “Buyers want to see your figures for last week, not just 12 months ago,” Sam says. “Sometimes we advise
sellers to build the business back up before putting it on the market.” If, through sheer boredom, an owner has struck out in an exciting direction which then fails to deliver, this can also detract from the once-thriving core business. “Owners can over-capitalise, investing in too much stock than can be justified by profits. Selling to a family member or employee as an easy or favourable option is not always advisable either – a previous owner who cannot break the emotional attachment does not lead to harmony in the workplace!” Damien says. A key external factor is missing an economic cycle: perhaps taking two months to contact the accountant who takes four months to prepare the books. Conditions can change in six months; business slows, banks tighten lending, and a window then closes for up to five years. “Timing is key in business sales, talk to us early, talk to us first and you won’t find yourself marooned on a dragon island.” Metropol April 25, 2019 29

Legal Firm’s
Rising Stars This month Papprills Lawyers celebrates 125 years of providing legal services to the people of Canterbury.
I
n 1891, Ernest Edward Papprill was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court. In 1894, he established his own law firm in Kaiapoi and, to this day, Papprills has an office serving the North Canterbury community in High Street, Rangiora. Papprills’ main office is now at 71 Gloucester Street, where Partners Jeff McCall and Margaret Smyth, and consultant David Collins, maintain the prestigious reputation of E.E’s legacy. They pride themselves on the supportive, friendly nature of
the firm that provides all manner of legal services from Commercial and Residential Property, Trusts, Wills and Asset Protection, through to Employment, Criminal and Family Court matters. Client relationships are very important at Papprills. They have numerous long-term, intergenerational relationships, including with descendants of E.E. Papprill himself. Many highly qualified and experienced Papprills Partners and solicitors have become Judges,
Queens Counsel, and prominent civil servants. Two of Papprills rising stars are Rebecca Maynard and Emma Ioane. Associate Rebecca Maynard was admitted to the bar in 2014, having graduated from the University of Canterbury with degrees in law and arts. After a few years living in London and travelling, she returned to Christchurch and joined Papprills. She enjoys all aspects of law and has an interest in residential property, trusts, wills, asset protection and relationship property. Solicitor Emma Ioane joined Papprills in 2018. In addition to a law degree from UC, Emma also has degrees in commerce and arts, with a minor degree in Pacific studies, a subject close to her heart. “My father is Samoan and the culture is a big part of my life and my family.” Emma enjoys the opportunities she has to serve the Pacific community in her capacity as lawyer. Her legal focus is on commercial property and leases, trusts and estates, residential property and relationship property. Papprills is a close knit, approachable team with client relationships at the heart of everything they do. Their commitment is to prompt, honest and courteous service. Lawyers sometimes have reputations of being distant, and even a little scary. Not at Papprills, however, Rebecca says. “We are genuinely focused on connecting with people and understanding their whole situation so we can offer the best ideas, suggestions and service.” The work environment is one that encourages and fosters that. Resourced well and with a positive approach to work life balance, Rebecca and Emma are afforded the time to not only spend time cultivating relationships with clients, but to also pursue their own development, strongly supported by Jeff and Margaret. “It’s almost like a family.” “It’s great to have people genuinely interested in your personal development, and making sure they are meeting your expectations,” Emma says of the Papprills leadership. This positive, encouraging ethos extends also to Papprills’ clients. “We really go out of our way to build those relationships, and that’s something that makes us stand out from some other firms.” Metropol April 25, 2019 31

Taking pride in their creations with the focus on creating communities, successfully completing Sovereign Palms in Kaiapoi through to their current subdivisions, Country Palms in Halswell, Sterling Park in Prebbleton and the highly desirable Linksgate in Arrowtown. One to watch out for and soon to be released is Oakbridge in Redwood. Tracy Frew’s role as Sales Manager plays an integral role in the company’s sales. Having had her own sales and marketing business and more than 30 years of sales experience, with over 14 of those years spent in the highpressured and competitive real estate environment where Tracy gained a high level of respect from her clients and colleagues alike and was able to bring to the business an accumulated wealth of real estate knowledge. Moving into the new role in 2018, the focus has been on building strong mutually rewarding relationships, specifically with the building companies and private clients who she deals with on a daily basis, with a focus on working to achieve a positive experience and rewarding outcome for all. “This role encompassed everything that I am passionate about, specifically working alongside people to assist them with achieving their life long goals and working for a successful well-respected company. Suburban Estates are made up of only a small group of individuals, however all incredibly talented professionals in their fields. The icing on the cake was the fact that I could have flexibility with my weekends being free to share quality time with my family and friends and a position that would also give me the opportunity to learn, step up and grow into such an exciting and diverse role.”

Patch up Job By Kayte John
The word ‘patchwork’ conjures up visions of homemade quilts and cushions used from unwanted fabrics, usually passed on from grandma who had lovingly spent hours sewing the pieces together.
BRIGID MCLAUGHLIN, PHOTOGRAPHY MYLES PRITCHARD
I
t certainly isn’t something you’d associate with fashion, but at last September’s New York Fashion Week, an abundance of designers took patchwork clothes and elevated them, turning them into a 2019 fashion trend. This patchwork trend argues that sometimes, just sometimes, more really is more and over the last year, we’ve seen maximalism trumping minimalism, moderation and pretty much any other kind of aesthetic balance. The textured patchwork trend continues to see maximalism take centre stage. Instead of paring down, we are layering on. Think combined textures,
mixed and matched prints, and a clash of bold colours infused together. From subtle to bold, it’s easy to embrace the trend and the trick is to choose just one patchwork piece in your entire outfit. Keep your outfit basic and opt for a patchwork coat or oversized knit jumper – it’s the absolute definition of winter-friendly patchwork clothing that can easily be integrated into your wardrobe. If you think the patchwork trend is a bit too much for you, then the simplest way to craft the on-trend winter look is to pick a piece of clothing that has a set pattern to it – (think squares, stripes, floral box prints) that is a perfect reminiscent to patchwork.

race is a fashion enthusiast, law student, a 2017 Young New Zealander of the Year nominee and a lifelong wheelchair user. She’s also the woman behind All is For All (AIFA), the brand new local shopping platform with a difference: providing those with accessibility needs with the details that the everyday fashion website overlooks. Grace’s endeavour to create a pioneering online store that makes accessibility a priority began last July when she received a pair of pants that she’d bought online from a Kiwi designer. She was disappointed to find an extra tie on the pants that hadn’t been visible on the website, which meant that if she wanted to wear them, she would need a parent or caregiver to help her. Thus, a lightbulb went off and the venture to create an accessibility-friendly online clothing store began. Less than a year later, the local fashion site has become a world-first; a curated collection of New Zealand designer fashion is presented free of the issues that people with access needs struggle with when it comes to online shopping. The garment is displayed on both ablebodied models and models with

varying physical conditions and thoroughly detailed garment descriptions help customers make informed decisions. A custombuilt search engine can address different needs, because when you have a physical disability of any kind, there are several different aspects that need to be considered when purchasing clothes online. For example, a dress will look totally different on a model who is standing up than it does on a person in a wheelchair; a pair of jeans with small metal rivets can cause pressure sores for a paraplegic; someone who is blind relies entirely on an in-depth audio description, and the list goes on. “Accessibility is not just a physical thing – it’s about everyone having the same access to the same experience and that includes online shopping,” Grace says. Grace looks to invite and support all industries to address their online presence from an accessibility angle. We can only hope that AIFA will set the ball rolling and encourage other fashion websites to jump on board and provide a positive shopping experience to all those with different physical requirements. www.allisforall.com

pink, but it is defined by its reddish-purple and purplish-pink tones. However you describe the colour, it’s a huge hit for the colder months ahead. It’s rich, bold and a great hue to bring youthfulness and life into your wardrobe. So how do we wake up our wardrobe and incorporate this hot shade into our attire? Magenta Muse – don’t be afraid to drive in and wear it head to toe for a headturning look, or pair it with bright red for a bold and beautiful statement. Be bold – grab yourself a statement piece by swapping your regular jacket or coat with a magenta tone to throw over your neutral clothing. Or try a feminine magenta dress, paired with a leather jacket which will become your wardrobe saviour. Colour pop – apply magenta in small doses such as shoes, a handbag or lipstick to add a pop of colour and liven up your outfit. Work-it – looking to add colour to your working wardrobe? If the thought of wearing another pencil skirt just feels too boring - consider one in magenta. Or try a magenta blouse paid with black tailored trousers for a much more refreshing look. Magenta magic – adding this shade to your wardrobe will certainly make you fall in love with your wardrobe again. Magenta will easily liven up any outfit, so freshen up your staples such as an oversized sweater, jacket or scarf.

Winter coats are one article of clothing where you don’t want function to trump fashion – but you don’t have to pick between the two when the latest look is all about the puffer jacket. With varying lengths and sizes, cool fabrics like leather and velvet, and a myriad of colours to choose from, we promise there’s a puffer for you.
I
f there’s one winter jacket you just must have, it’s the puffer. These big, bulky pieces of outerwear provide insulation from harsh weather like no other and since their slow but sure rise over the last few decades from a purely utilitarian garment to a chic fashion must-have, a multitude of sensational styles have been spotted on 2018/2019 runways the globe over. The humble puffer is no stranger to the catwalk either, with fashion royalty Balenciaga, Burberry, Valentino, Tom Ford and more all taking a turn to champion the jacket in recent seasons, but the puffer has undergone a street-style resurgence of late, with influencers pairing it with bumbags, leather hotpants and belts. As always black makes for a good staple colour, but metallic-y styles in vibrant colours are all the rage this season, as is animal print and maxilength (in fact, any length goes). Huge hoods, embellishments and fur lining/trim are also fun puffer styles in the fashion arena, and puffers of timelessly fashionable fabrics – think leather, velvet and faux suede – are equally as trendy. The asymmetrical wrap puffer with an oversized collar and bow is another version that’s caught the attention of fashion followers. For those who love a good retro look, consider pairing a vintage puffer – throwback styles include flouncy florals, velvet and colours like 70s golden yellow – with other pieces from the past. Oversized is the way to go for a totally on-trend fashion statement – according to designers like Marques Almeida and Y Project; the bulkier the better. No complaints here – we’ll definitely be cosy this winter when we’re snuggled in a jacket that could double as a sleeping bag.

varicose veins
Varicose veins are common, affecting about 30 percent of people, and while they can appear at any age from young adulthood, they are linked to genetic inheritance and become more common with age. Treatments have been available since 1550 BC, but as Roman tyrant Caius Marius noted, the cure wasn’t worth the pain.
F
ortunately for present-day sufferers, Transform Clinic offers walk-in walk-out treatments, whether your concerns are cosmetic or health-related. Manager Jenny Little says, “Varicose veins can be unsightly and or very uncomfortable, give you restless legs, and can lead to the skin around them breaking down, creating varicose ulcers”. Jenny says clients arrive unhappy with the look, or the discomfort they are feeling, or both. While women are more affected than men, there are plenty of men arriving for treatment. “Often we see farmers at a quiet point in their calendar.” Most treatments are done for medical rather than cosmetic reasons, you won’t need time off work and the cost of treatment is covered by most health insurers.
Your first consultation is free and Dr Ian Little, Fellow of the Australasian College of Phlebology, uses ultrasound scanning to establish whether the veins are varicose. Options for treatment are ultrasound guided sclerotherapy, endovenous laser, and VenaSeal™ - an innovative treatment that uses a glue formulation. Within 12 months, follow-ups are free. “While our treatments are effective, only so many veins can be treated at once,” Jenny says. Transform Clinic is open six days per week with branches around the South Island, so phone 03 343 2880 to find your nearest clinic.

T
his luxury product smells amazing and is easy and pleasant to use.
Aluminium clogs pores so the body cannot eliminate toxins, so it ends up in our lymphatic
system and breast tissue. Our bodies are designed to sweat, but we don’t want the odour, so using a natural deodorant that prevents odour but allows gentle perspiration is the healthy option.” Nicky distributes Freedom to spas, appearance clinics and salons, alongside another handpicked brand, Cane + Austin skincare. Created by New York dermatologist Dr Austin, the highly active glycolic-based range is simple and effective for plumper, fresher, younger-looking skin. The latest Cane + Austin addition is the 10 percent glycolic cleanser and mask – two beautiful products in one. Nicky uses the range herself and says it appeals to both women and men. “People love
it and feel the benefits really quickly.” After more than 25 years in the beauty industry working as a commercial make-up artist and in beauty product distribution, Nicky retrained in micropigmentation (cosmetic tattooing) and skin needling. She established Bespoke Cosmetic more than five years ago. “Everything at Bespoke is aimed at increasing people’s wellbeing and confidence in their appearance, whether it’s cosmetic tattoo, makeup, or effective skincare products.” Follow Bespoke Cosmetic on Facebook and Instagram. Be The BestYou If, like Winston Churchill, you are easily satisfied with the very best, then you will be thrilled with Qt Belle, Beau and Encore. These Internal Cosmetics were tested by participants in the ‘30-day challenge’ and the results are outstanding.
P
articipants had ‘before’ photos taken, received products and stated their improvement goals for skin, hair and nails, and were asked to rate their changes. They also received advice on healthy living. The ‘after’ photos, ratings and comments, are astonishing. Skin confidence went from 22 percent to 86 percent, strong hair from 21 percent to 80 percent, strong nails from 28 percent to 93 percent, while 79 percent of participants said their confidence had improved overall, and 90 percent will continue to use the products. Callum Stewart, the founder of the company, says older women are particularly thrilled with the improvement in signs of aging. “We had absolute confidence we would get great results and we have been
proven correct. It’s about real people and real results. Most of the participants followed the healthy lifestyle advice as well, with a volunteer struggling with psoriasis saying it had cleared, and many reporting wearing much less make-up.” “I never understood what an internal cosmetic was, but now I can feel it from the inside and see it on the outside,” commented one participant. “The increase in confidence is a special buzz for us,” Callum says. “Repurchase rates of our uniquely successful product are stunningly high – these results come from just thirty days but the longer you take it the better.” Find them at www.qtforyou. com or check out the video on Facebook or at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=WuKqTmEVMrQ.

Winter survival essentials By Clementine Page
The days are getting shorter and colder, and we get it – all you want to do is snuggle up and never leave the house. But life beckons us to reluctantly crawl out of our caves, and mustering up the mental and physical energy to get through the day doesn’t come easily to the best of us. We look at three essential vitamins to keep you in tip-top shape this winter.
Vitamin C: Taking regular Vitamin C supplements is the key to a top-performing immune system all winter long. Not only is it a godsend when it comes to warding off colds and flus, Vitamin C also protects and improves the function of cells, supports the absorption of iron and helps to maintain healthy bones, cartilage, skin and teeth. Vitamin D: According to recent studies, there is in fact a link between Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and Vitamin D deficiency, which explains the winter slump. Vital for healthy immunity, energy and mental wellbeing, the vitamin is unfortunately not present in most foods,
but relatively high doses can be found in cod liver oil capsules. Battle depression, anxiety, fatigue and muscle aches with this little warrior! Vitamin B12: Researchers have discovered that individuals with B vitamin deficiency may find themselves more sensitive to cold temperatures. Vitamin B12 is required to make healthy red blood cells that are needed to carry oxygen throughout the body and the result is poor circulation – meaning cold hands and feet and general intolerance to low temperatures. Find high quantities of this nutrient in animal liver/ kidneys, nutritional yeast and Vegemite. Metropol April 25, 2019 49

TheTherapy of Running American long-distance runner, Kara Goucher, once said this about why she chose to run: “I don’t feel like myself unless I run. It’s how I deal with sadness and happiness. I need it. It’s like therapy.”
C
hristchurch runners are fortunate, then, that they have access to expert running coaches, such as those at the Muscle People Running Centre, who provide extensive programmes and facilities to help clients pursue their passion. With running being so accessible and popular, it’s also one of the most common ways to develop an injury. Running injuries often affect the hips, knees, ankles and feet of runners, and can negatively impact muscles and joints. Runners who have suffered injuries are often frustrated at their inability to get back out there as soon as they would want, but it’s important to
receive the best advice and treatment from an expert who understands your goals and will work to help you achieve them. The team at Muscle People ensure clients are back running their favourite tracks as quickly as possible, but more importantly, as safely as possible, without the risk of future problems. The Muscle People’s point of difference however, is found in the three key benefits derived from their programmes: • Detailed video analysis of running technique, followed by a plan for improvement • Running specific-movement screening
to assess any movement flaws preventing optimal running patterns • Reduced risk of injury through optimal technique • Improved performance through individualised training programmes After the video analysis, your physio/ trainer will go through their findings and recommendations with you and plan out future sessions that are pitched to each individual’s running level. The running and exercises are performed in intervals, so clients needn’t worry that they won’t keep up. It’s perfect for all levels of fitness and running experience. Clients will receive valuable tips and advice on their running technique. The Muscle People program is suitable for all levels of runners, including children who may love sports but are struggling in a school sports environment. Like the adult coaching, kids receive a detailed video analysis of their running method, followed by a plan and then sessions to help improve technique. These sessions not only improve the child’s running technique, but also give a huge boost to their confidence on the sports field. No matter your skill level, there will be something for you. Call now to book in your personalised running programme.

Less is more Sometimes less really is more and this can certainly be said of 2019 wedding dress trends as we herald the return of classic designs and simple styles. Heading the return is the poster girl for minimalism, Meghan Markle, whose own dress, designed by the British fashion designer Clare Waight Keller, artistic director of fashion powerhouse Givenchy, transformed how we seek to dress on the big day.
4.
Go-to Greenery We’re bringing the outside in for 2019 weddings, with greenery reigning as a classic go-to shade of weddings this year. Trees and foliage are taking centre stage, offering lush rich table runners and decoration that makes a strong base for the popular minimalist look.
5.
Well-Groomed Groomsmen are proving three’s not a crowd in 2019 as they take their best three-piece suits to the aisle. The three piece suit is a classic and about as suave and stylish as it can get for the men in our lives.
6.
Writing’s on the wall Handwritten notes are a nostalgic thing of the past, which makes handwritten wedding invitations something extra special and 2019 brides are utilising professional illustrators to let their fingers do the talking.
7.
Colourful confetti There’s no denying that 2019 weddings all come down to Instaworthiness and the colourful confetti trend certainly takes the crown for that! Of course though, this is 2019, so the confetti is enviro-conscious confetti; water-soluble, non-toxic and biodegradable, but wow-worthy none the less.
Nuptial Inspo
When it comes to the big day, it’s your opportunity to be the belle of the ball and the life of the party. And, while you want the day to be all about you, there’s no harm in looking to global trends to make it the best when it comes to your matrimonial celebrations.
1.
Coral Cravings When Pantone announced its colour of 2019 as a bright, sunny, pinky-orange named ‘Living Coral’, chances are the colour institute hadn’t banked on starting a new bridal trend. But they’ve certainly got us craving coral and this showstopper is perfect for a sunny summer wedding.

2.
Banquet Beauty Smaller round tables and tall centrepieces are being eschewed for elegant long banquet tables with low centrepieces or simply draped in greenery and dotted with simple tea lights or fairy lights. It’s more social and it’s more Insta-worthy – win-win!
8.
Gender Fluidity We’re used to bridesmaids and groomsmen, but this year expect to see more bridesmen, groomsgirls and best women! Because the beauty of 2019 weddings is that we don’t have to fit our celebrations into boxes – and that includes our nearest and dearest.
The talented team at V for Hair and Beauty, Merivale are, as ever, focused on looking after clients with the best possible customer service experience.

Bespoke and Sentimental The true meaning of bespoke refers to handcrafted design, developed in close consultation with the client.
A
bespoke ring crafted from a piece of jewellery with sentimental value is a meaningful way of re-creating something beautiful, says designer Clare of Via Sollertia. “We often have customers bring in jewellery from their great grandmother or a family member who passed away, so we can turn it into bridal jewellery or an engagement ring. It’s my favourite thing to create – I love the family story and sentimentality behind it. And there is no wastage, so it’s also an eco-conscious, sustainable option.” Located in the heart of the city on iconic New Regent Street, the family-owned business provides a friendly, welcoming atmosphere and can work with any budget. “We’re willing to go above and beyond what customers expect. Throughout the creation process, they are involved every step of the way.” Find Via Sollertia on Instagram and Facebook. Phone 366 8001 or visit www.viasollertia.co.nz for more information.

Ingredients 140ml aquafaba (the drained water from 1 x 400g tin chickpeas) ½ tsp cream of tartar 100g caster sugar 2-3 bananas 25g dark chocolate For the caramel sauce 150g caster sugar 120ml full-fat coconut milk pinch of salt ½ tsp dairy-free butter For the cashew cream 150g cashews 600ml full-fat coconut milk 2 tbsp icing sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract ½ banana
Method Preheat oven to 180°C. Pour the aquafaba into the mixer. Turn the mixer onto high and leave it running. Add the cream of tartar and continue to beat. After two minutes, add the caster sugar slowly. Beat on high for 10–15 minutes, until aquafaba is a thick, meringue-like mixture that won’t fall off a spoon turned upside down. Spoon the mixture onto the lined baking sheets to make nests about 8cm wide, no more
than 1.5cm high and smooth on top, leaving 2cm between them. Put the trays in the oven and immediately reduce the heat to 100°C. Bake for two hours, then turn off the heat, leave the door closed and let the meringues cool completely, preferably overnight in the oven. This allows them to set properly and reduces the chances of them cracking due to sudden temperature changes. Caramel sauce: Put the frying
pan on a medium heat, pour in the sugar, 75ml of the coconut milk and the salt. Bring to the boil, whisking continuously. Once the mixture has turned caramel in colour, about 10-15 minutes, remove from the heat. Add the rest of the coconut milk and the dairy-free butter, stir through and transfer to a heatproof bowl. Cashew cream: Put the small saucepan over a medium heat, add the nuts and 400ml of the coconut milk. Bring to the boil,
then reduce the heat and simmer until most of the coconut milk has evaporated. Transfer to the liquidiser, add the icing sugar, vanilla and remaining 200ml coconut milk. Add the banana to the liquidiser, blend until smooth. Place meringue nests on serving plates. Cover with long diagonal strips of banana, dollops of coconut cream and lashings of caramel sauce. Finely grate over the chocolate and serve.

Funky new

E
arl, a new food-centric bistro/wine bar located in the heart of the funky and very cool SALT (St Asaph-LichfieldTuam Streets) district, has certainly wasted no time in getting noticed. The menu is Coastal European, inspired by the energy and vibrancy that restaurateur/owner Tom Newfield found when travelling through coastal cities, such as Italy and Portugal. With dining seating for 65, plus casual seating for those wanting something lighter, this is the perfect place to kickback, sip a wine at the wrap-around bar and enjoy the ambience. “What we provide is a laid-back feel, but with an around-the-clock sense of occasion,” Tom says. The design and décor of this bistro is largely thanks to Tom. “I wanted to create a light-filled, timeless space, and break down the barriers between the kitchen and the customer – chefs dressed in crisp white and navy, passionately working in an open kitchen, which is centred as the focal point.”
Earl serves as a canvas for producedriven dishes for diners who love great wine and conversation. “Our food philosophy is to take simple and traditional dishes and execute them using exceptional ingredients, whilst having some fun.” Located at the base of a new mixeduse building and sitting on Butchers Lane, which will eventually connect the area with a walkway to the city’s proposed new stadium, Tom views this locale as the best place to be. “We’re at the foot of One Central, which will eventually see over 900 residential apartments here; there’s the beautiful Rauora Park right across the road, and we’re surrounded by fantastic cafés, bars, boutique designer shops and theatres. The potential for this area is huge, and we’re so excited to be part of it!” Find Earl at 128 Lichfield Street (close to corner Lichfield and Manchester Streets). More magic to come!
Picture this: you’re dressed to impress in a flirty frock and killer heels, you’ve a poppy pout on your mouth, and you’re feeling fantastic because you and your girls have had an unforgettable theatre experience.
Y
ou swing down the street, arms linked, singing songs from the show you’ve just left; you feel so happy, you don’t want the night to end – there has to be more magic to come… Across the street you notice something – a white rabbit, and it’s beckoning with an elegant paw. You nudge your friends and make for the doorway the rabbit has just bolted through. There he is! He doffs his hat,
bows and bids you enter The Monday Room, where he directs you to your table and invites you to be seated. It seems the girls in your party desire something delectably sweet to enhance the hedonistic mood that has ensnared you all since you tumbled into this curious place where anything seems possible. You note the menu’s autumn inspired theme, from which
you can choose either your own sweet dishes, or you can Trust the Chef by partaking in a degustation of tempting treats created by Finnish culinary artists of The Monday Room, head chef Eeva Torvinen, and sous chef, Annika Kiviniemi. Your taste buds start to tingle as you read the menu item, A Taste of the Sweet Life. Here’s a tasting board to share that would make the Cheshire Cat’s grin grow even broader. But should you want to keep your pudding all to yourself, then Memory of Granny, a scrumptious composition of buttermilk cake, apple jam, and caramelised apple ice-cream; Blueberry Forest, a thyme sponge cake, blueberry gel and liquorice ice-cream; Snowman’s Nose, a tantalising concoction of carrot cake, cashew cheese, carrot sorbet and hazelnut; Beet It, a glorious gourmand of dark chocolate cake, yoghurt crème, beetroot ice-cream and hazelnut; and oh so wickedly last but not least, Red Riding
Hood, a mouth-watering vegan meringue, coconut and red currant sorbet, provide oodles of wonderfully wicked options. But of course, no sweet supper is complete without a glass of something divinely decadent to ramp up happiness levels. Why not try the Trust the Sommelier option whereby Master of Wine, Stephen Wong, will prescribe the perfect match to accompany your degustation of dainty desserts? For the boys of your party, who might fancy savoury over sweet, the Pegasus Bay Five Course Degustation Pairing guarantees to transform any boy into a man faster than you can say White Rabbit. There now, things may’ve become curiouser and curiouser, but falling through the wall of The Monday Room has given you, undoubtedly, the most magical night of your life! “I
spent six months obsessing about it and trialled so many recipes that I drove my wife, Monique, crazy because we were eating chicken virtually every meal!” Jayden laughs. But Jayden’s commitment to his quest paid off, as in 2018, with help from a Kickstarter campaign, Jayden launched his food-truck and has never looked back. His business motto is Local, Happy, Sustainable, Delicious
and Jayden explains why that’s important to him. “We’re about supporting local, wherever possible – our buttermilk’s from Karikaas in Rangiora; our ice-cream from Nelson’s Appleby Farms; our cheese from Whitestone Cheese, Oamaru, and our brioche buns are from Breads of Europe in Christchurch. Our birds are local, cage-free and happy, our packaging’s biodegradable, compostable and recyclable, and our food speaks for itself.” Jayden’s food truck operates from 98 Oxford Terrace, Wednesday to Friday, 12-3pm and 5-9pm, plus Saturday 5-9pm. Empire devotees can also find them at the New Brighton Markets on Saturdays, 10-2pm. With their bricks and mortar operation opening at 98 Oxford Terrace in June, Jayden already has an eye to the future. “I want to grow this business – franchise options are already out there – and a fully licensed restaurant is definitely somewhere in my five-year plan.” For more information, phone 027 315 7103, follow @empirechicken on Instagram or visit www.empirechicken.nz.

Kiwi Hospitality Milieu is a French term, meaning a social setting or environment – which is certainly apt for the popular Milieu Café in Addington. Combining a warm, friendly atmosphere with an impressive selection of Kiwi-style dishes created fresh onsite using locally sourced ingredients, the café attracts many locals and regulars from surrounding businesses on 112 Wrights Road.

rom breakfast, lunch and the best C4 Coffee, to a delectable selection of homemade baking, Milieu caters to all tastes and preferences. “Everything is made from scratch,” says Manager Stella. “We take our coffee and food really seriously and our customers are always
complimenting them. Our friendly staff and baristas are excellent and know all of our regulars’ names and orders by heart.” For breakfast, an early bird special (before 10:30am) of bacon, free-range eggs and toast is available for just $12.50. One of the most loved dishes
on the lunch menu is the Thai Beef Salad – grilled beef served with house-made Thai dressing on seasonal salad greens, red onions and cherry tomatoes, topped with crispy noodles and roasted cashews. The ever-changing ‘soup of the day’ is another popular choice for lunch, as is the Cajun-
dusted Gourmet Chicken Burger and the Crispy Chicken Wrap – marinated in special Japanesestyle seasoning. Alongside the freshly made scones and muffins, slices and sweet treats, there is always a variety of sumptuous savoury choices in the cabinet. Will it be a chicken panini, a tasty bagel or a slice of spinach and feta quiche? now find tucked into beautiful rural surroundings, including hazelnut and fruit trees. There is al fresco dining where, if you catch it just right, the silence is refreshing, perfect for those balmy Canterbury evenings, or even the cool ones. As a family business, Sriamorn’s children pitch in too. Aaron and Chelsy can
usually be found waiting tables, attending mum in the kitchen, or taking care of front of house duties. Even busy architect Paul can sometimes be found clearing tables or serving drinks. Lemongrass is perfect for any occasion; private functions, casual lunches, romantic dinners, or a special treat for friends and family. It is BYO beer and wine, and there is a selection of nonalcoholic beverages. The menu is replete with all the Thai dishes and flavours you would expect, plus a few surprises. Thai beef salad (pictured), wok fried pork with garlic and chilli, or pan fried salmon. Demand is high at Lemongrass and bookings are essential. T
he colour purple is known to evoke a sense of calm, and if done right, it can be a distinguishing colour in your home. Interior colour schemes that include lavender, plum, violet and greyish-purple have become a perennial favourite in interior design trends – and now homeowners are catching on. Whether you’re looking for regal elegance, or seeking a subdued shade, purple tones can be beautifully infused into your home. Trying new paint colours is a practical and creative solution that can dramatically change the way rooms look and feel. However, bold colours that are far from neutral can sometimes be hard to process. If you’re wanting to add purple into your interior, small steps like adding artwork, decorative vases or even flowers will help you acquire the taste to see if it’s right for your home. Purple hues can be paired with fresh white tones and brown upholstery fabric to create a pleasant and romantic interior design; or to tone down the purple haze, you can also mix it with other colours such as indigo blue, gold or silver, as well as neutrals. For the bold and the brave who want to take big steps - choose bright and sharp colours like citrus yellow and emerald green to pair with purple for a dramatic statement that will turn heads in your home.
hygge at home [ pronounced hue-guh ]
I’m not sure if it’s the prospect of winter approaching, the conclusion of Daylight Saving or just a strong sense that here in Canterbury we need to look out for each other, but something’s definitely got me thinking. This month instead of writing (which to me is talking) about property in its usual commercial and clinical way, I’ve decided to explore the deeply satisfying concept of what a home is. What makes us rush home? Why do some homes engage you at every level? How do these homes instill a deep sense of comfort and safety, and why is that important? Last year I was introduced to the concept of Hygge. Usually I struggle with the concepts of words I find difficult to say, but this word stems from the Danish representation of what is ‘cosy’. It’s not a formal method of living, it doesn’t dictate or judge, it merely encourages you to know or find what is comforting and meaningful for you, and then ensure the essence of this is part of your home life. The consistent elements of this sit as easily in a Kiwi lifestyle as a Scandinavian one and include: enjoying or being close to nature; creating intimate, cosy spaces; having meaningful items in your home rather than massive amounts of stuff or clutter (that’s me challenged!); and finding joy in the simple things. With all of this in mind, I thought I’d share some of my own Hygge interpretations and ways in which I enjoy bringing a strong sense of home and family into my life. • Blankets. I love them everywhere and not just for decoration, but for warmth, snuggling and occasionally as a quick cloak walking from one part of the house to another. • Big couches that you can lie on or fall asleep in. Not those tiny little things that you only just fit on with your back straight and your feet tucked in. • Candles, flowers and lamps. No surprises here and if there’s nothing at the markets I’ll forage leaves and random bits of greenery. All of these provide me with a sense of peace and respite. • Pictures of my family. If there was a fire, I’d grab my framed pictures and feel grateful. And there you are. I live much of my life in the world of real estate and I’m constantly interpreting or being asked to explain its nuances. The Christchurch market is going into winter and this winter, more than ever, needs a clear head and a strong sense of purpose. That’s why celebrating the gentle rhythms of your own home is important for me … and no doubt you too. Happy April – happy Hygge!

Blankets and throws are the darlings of the design world, playing a role in both form and function – ready to pull out on a whim or layer up on the back of a couch when they just need to look the part.

Knitted materials have a way of creating cosy and the same can be said about our living spaces as well as our wardrobes. Add some knitted ottomans or throws to create spaces that are knitty and nice.

Layers of lighting is a beautiful way to add warmth to a space, from table lamps and floor lamps to differing lengths of hanging lights.

How Touchstone Homes got us into our first home.”
“As a young couple, Sean and I were ready to buy our first home. We found some home building companies were very secretive about the pricing. But not Touchstone Homes. Their house and land packages were within our budget and very easy to understand. We went into their show home in Halswell and the first thing that won us over was Karen’s attitude. We’ve been to many show homes where it’s uncomfortable. But Karen was interested in us and our day, not just trying to sell us a house. The other winning factor for us was that we could see on display in the show home everything that we could have in our new home. We could also view a wide selection of plans and colour choices.
We found that Touchstone, being a smaller company, made the experience more personal. With Touchstone, you always knew who you were L-R: Karen, Sean and Sheila at the dealing with. We got new home in Falcon’s Landing: “Touchstone Homes are incredible to exactly what we were work with.” hoping for – a company that was understanding, helpful and that made the experience enjoyable.” I would encourage anyone looking to build to talk with Touchstone Homes first.”

Cue the curves By Kayte John
Anyone can appreciate the aesthetic beauty of rounded corners. Curves are said to be easier on the eye and take less cognitive effort to visually process. When American architect Philip Johnson first visited the Guggenheim Museum in Spain, it is said that he described it as “the greatest building of our time” and started to cry.
J
ohnson said, “Architecture is not about words; it’s about tears”. Something about the museum’s majestic curves moved him at an emotional level, and many visitors must have had a similar feeling as the building was hailed as a ‘signal moment in the architectural culture’. There’s no denying that curves are eye-catching,
and one of the biggest transformations taking place in interior design trends for 2019 is just that – curves. We are seeing scalloped edges, crescent silhouettes and graceful curved corners taking over both furniture and accessories in the home. People are growing tired of square and rectangular furniture with straight, clean lines and are now moving towards round shaped furniture. From rounded chairs to curved coffee tables, these interior design essentials are all about comfort and elegance. These shapes may resemble furnishings from previous decades like the swinging sixties, but this returning trend brings an inviting softness to our rooms. To reflect the trend in your own home, look to everything from curved sofas and coffee tables, to mirrors, lamps and side tables. Even curved artwork can add softness to a room and create a more inviting and relaxing abode.

home To Sleep,
Better Sleep Solutions If you find you’re often waking at night clammy and perspiring in an overheated bed, the cause could be that your mattress is of a synthetic composition.
“W
e hear many complaints about people having really uncomfortable sleeps with their new mattress,” Dreamwool Beds owner David Henderson says. “Initially it’s good, but two to three hours later, this great wall of heat rises beneath them and it doesn’t get any better through the night.” Natural product is used both in the filling and the comfort layers of Dreamwool mattresses,
which gives better control of the micro-climate in the bed, due to the aeration within the mattress. New models, the Paradise and Revolution, have thumb-nail sized micro-coils inside them which lift the body, resulting in more air being passed through the bed. For women going through menopause, night sweats impede a good night’s sleep. David has received comments from a number of women who’ve said their quality of rest
has become significantly better (due to the mattress remaining cooler and dry) since switching to one of his beds. “Our move to merino has enhanced sleep comfort even further. Our top-line Queen size beds run at over 7.5kgs of merino wool. Other beds on the market may have around 500 grams of wool – so naturally, that huge difference is going to impact on the sleeping experience. And that’s the word I want to emphasise – experience – because to sleep on one of our mattresses is an experience,” David says. There are two choices of mattress support – pocket spring and natural latex. With the aid of a see-through sample box, customers can see precisely how each mattress is layered with its natural components. The mattresses sit on European flexible slat frame beds, which provide the best in comfort, but also give ventilation under the bed and
through the mattress. “The lighter frame doesn’t take up space visually, unlike big box bases; the beds look finer, so you have that pared down ensemble. It’s very much that ‘less is more’ take on design,” David says. With a flexible slat frame, each side of the bed can be customised, allowing for that all-important flexion of shoulder and hip. The showroom is airy and uncluttered. Colour coded blankets – blue for a firm mattress, lime for a medium, and lilac for a soft mattress – allows customers to try all the beds at their leisure. “Once we’ve explained the blanket colour codes, we often find customers literally rolling from one mattress to another to find their perfect bed; we make buying beds easy!” David laughs. ore than 80 of these commercial building projects are vying to win the title of the 2019 Supreme Commercial Project of the Year, at the 2019 New Zealand Commercial Project Awards next month. These prestigious awards run by the Registered Master Builders Association (RMBA) set the benchmark for commercial construction in New Zealand. The 2019 winners
will be announced at a national gala event on 17 May at Sky City. The awards have been designed to recognise and celebrate the contribution and collaboration of the professionals that work on commercial building projects – big or small – from architects, engineers and project managers to quantity surveyors and the construction companies, according to Registered Master

Builders Chief Executive David Kelly. “The commercial sector is facing enormous challenges at the moment and this competition rewards the true partnership of all parties involved in the commercial construction process,” he says. The 2019 entrants include a diverse range of projects from all over New Zealand. These include the transformation of The Old Stone House, originally built by Sir John Cracroft Wilson on his Christchurch estate in 1870-71, the expansion of the Wellington Hospital ICU and the creation of a worldclass dairy barn system in Gordonton. The 2019 categories include the Construction Marketing Services Education Project, CARTERS Commercial Project, PlaceMakers Tourism and
Leisure Project, Altus Health Project, Winstone Wallboards Residential Project, Resene Commercial Fit Out Project, Heritage/Restoration Project, Retail Project, Civic Project and the Industrial Project. There are also four valuebased awards and the potential for a Special Award for any outstanding project worthy of recognition. This year, Registered Master Builders introduced two new special awards – the Sustainability Award recognises the relationship our man-made buildings have with the environment, and the Innovation Award recognises that transformation is happening in our sector be it process, design, construction materials or technology. The highest accolade of the Awards – the Platinum Award – is given to an entrant who has won five or more national titles. This can only be awarded to an organisation once. The central city is exciting, alive and vibrant. In my opinion, there are several factors and benefits buyers should consider if they are thinking about living in the CBD.
A
s homeowners are downsizing, it’s a great opportunity to enjoy a vibrant inner-city. Living in a townhouse or apartment in the central city allows owners or tenants the benefit of a small footprint and low maintenance options with easy access to local services and amenities.

The simplicity of central city living cannot be underestimated, having cafés, restaurants, entertainment, art and culture, music and great bars right on your doorstep. In 2018 there were seventeen events in Hagley Park. The soon to open Convention Centre, the Metro Sports Facility, the recent opening of the Town Hall and other city projects will only make living in the CBD more exciting. Another aspect of living in the inner city is a growing community spirit. There is a swing back to knowing your neighbour and a sense of looking after each other, especially for those in multi-unit buildings. This fosters a sense of security, safety and feel-good factor. We’ve had strong sales in the city over the last two months, with one-bedroom apartments from $330K to executive three and four bedroom dwellings up to $2m, from first-home buyers and families to professionals and investors. We have three only left at 17 Salisbury Street, a lovely two-bed two-bath townhouse for $680,000. I have a free inner-city booklet with the current new build properties plus pending projects. fter the events of 15 March, we saw such an outpouring of compassion and support from throughout the world as we came to terms with an event we thought would never happen in our city. Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister, so quickly became an example of the way a country’s leader should respond to such events. Mayor, Hon Lianne Dalziel was also able to galvanise a shocked community by providing comfort, support and confidence at the appropriate time. As we look at what was done well, it is also important that we take some time to reflect on our learnings and what we may look to do differently moving forward. At a macro level, diversity has become such a buzzword in recent times, that for many it may have become lip service. I would instead encourage people to focus on cultural curiosity – to understand that culture matters and to (respectfully) ask questions about the people around you and be interested in their answers. At a very practical level, we need to look at how we responded as an individual, family unit, school, or business. We need to ask ourselves: what did we do in the minutes, hours, days and weeks following the tragedy? Were we able to mobilise support to those that needed it, when they needed it? And how could we have been better prepared? As a city, we need to encourage good, strong, robust conversations around what we could do differently. From ensuring we have a response plan in place, to reflecting on our own individual role in being inclusive.

T
he last month has been a hard one for Christchurch. I don’t think any of us ever imagined something like this would happen in our country, let alone our city. Despite the shock and sadness we have felt, I have heard so many stories of kindness and compassion about people in Christchurch offering help to our Muslim community. In the last four weeks we have observed the incredible strength and bravery of our front line emergency service staff. We have witnessed diligence and commitment from the people employed in the various government departments that are supporting victims and their families. We have seen piles of flowers and cards, and the sincere sadness those tokens have been lain with. We have seen cooperation in parliament to ban military style semi-automatic weapons and assault rifles. And at a time when they are grieving, we have seen the Al-Noor Mosque open its doors and welcome visitors. I want to thank everyone who has done something to support and ease the suffering of the people hurting the most in the wake of the terrorist attack. It has been a reminder that even during one of New Zealand’s darkest times, there were moments of goodness.
M
arch was a month of total gratitude for our fellow citizens who, once again, pulled together and looked after one another. The whole world has taken note of the power love can wield against fear and hatred. Let’s hope humankind can carry on down this path. The team at Ministry of Awesome (MoA) celebrated the early days of March with the launch of the NZ Aerospace Challenge driven by Airbus, MBIE, ChristchurchNZ, Blinc Innovation, and Spacebase. The purpose of the competition is to use space technology for innovation in agritech. We are fortunate to have Emmeline and Eric Dahlstrom, Spacebase founders and space technology pioneers, here in Christchurch as guides for the duration of the competition. March also marked the launch of the 2019 EY Entrepreneur of the Year awards (EoY) - the most prestigious business awards in the world. The launch took place at MoAs new HQ, Te Ōhaka - Centre for Growth and Innovation. It was wonderful to see so many potential future winners in the room - all from Ōtautahi. Another March highlight was a visit to AI Day in Auckland. Most attendees were thrilled and concerned in equal measure at the developments that have taken place in the field of artificial intelligence in only a few short years. It’s clear that the coming impact of AI on our world is enormous and we must prepare to harness AI for positive world impact.

nternational and national investors are continuing to show strong interest in the Christchurch commercial property market. After the earthquakes, a lot of those buyers shied clear of the city but that’s certainly changed now with more and more enquiry from buyers outside the city – for both bare land and significant commercial and industrial buildings. As Auckland becomes more expensive with accompanying low yields, Christchurch returns are looking more and more attractive, especially considering the comparable quality of buildings and tenants. In the past two years, there have been numerous chunky sales to national and international buyers totalling more than $200 million. High profile syndicates such as Aucklandbased Augusta Capital, are particularly active, most recently spending $53.75 million to add Castle Rock Business Park to its industrial property portfolio. The deal is believed to be the largest industrial property sale in the South Island. Of the four bids we received for Castle Rock, three were from North Island interests. Another Auckland syndicate, Silverfin Capital, bought Metro Glass in Hornby, a private Auckland investor picked up the Online Distribution building in Woolston, the sale and leaseback of the Turners & Growers was to an Auckland buyer, as was Tait Technology Centre. Inner city offices PwC and Duncan Cotterill Plaza attracted the attention of an international buyer in off-market deals while Queenstown-based syndicate Mitchell Mackersy recently bought Opus House in Moorhouse Avenue. This sort of activity certainly augurs well for Christchurch and we don’t see it waning any time soon.
C
onstruction of the Metro Sport Facility gets underway next month on the former Canterbury Brewery site. That’s good news regardless of whether you like to get active from the top of a 10-metre dive tower or the comfort of a spin bike. We recently awarded a $221m contract for the construction of what will be the largest sports and recreation venue of its kind in New Zealand to CPB Contractors Limited and expect the build to be completed late in 2021. In addition to the obvious wellbeing benefits, the economic impact of the Metro Sports Facility is worth considering. Christchurch City Council will operate the venue and expects it to host eight to twelve national and international events each year, which will bring coaches, family and supporters from all around the country, and they’ll be using our hotels and motels, eating out and going shopping. Building the Metro Sports Facility will also be of great benefit to the local construction industry with at least 80 percent of the sub-trades to be sourced domestically. We expect more than $60 million in wages and salaries will be paid to the local workforce throughout construction, with more than 400 people employed on site at its peak. It is tremendous to be able to take this step forward. As we’ve seen with Te Pae, getting a contractor on site and a building out of the ground does a lot for people’s confidence in Christchurch.
I
was interested to read recently a submission by the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce on the Christchurch City Council’s 2019/2020 Draft Annual Plan, and to note the shared thinking between the Chamber and Regenerate Christchurch on what is needed to ensure Christchurch achieves long-term, sustainable regeneration. A key element, as noted by the Chamber, is best-for-city decision-making across a public sector that is committed to genuine partnerships with the business sector, to not only support the private investment and leverage the public investment that has been made to date but also encourage further investment. In other words, to demonstrate that Christchurch is open for business. Nationally, the urban development and planning sectors are talking about this type of collaboration being critical for success. But they are also talking about a need for streamlined tools to expedite planning processes and provide more certainty. In Christchurch, we already have bespoke legislation available to us that mandates and drives greater collaboration and delivers a capability to streamline processes that other cities and centres can only talk about. It represents a genuine opportunity to address some of the urban planning and development challenges that can create roadblocks. We do not have long, though, as the Greater Christchurch Regeneration Act will expire in two years’ time. But the legislation, in isolation, will not be enough and a firm commitment to genuine collaboration is critical.

WHAT’S IN THE BUILDING? In early 2016, Peter Marshall of architectural firm Warren and Mahoney wrote, in ArchitectureNow, that “the new Christchurch will be an overlay of the new upon the old – one that preserves heritage while embracing modernity. The result will be a 21st-century ‘garden city’ that provides a new way of working and living in a city within a contemporary and vibrant environment.”

emotions, but Mustor believes that “for most students, parents, and staff, there is great excitement about the possibilities our new facility and location can bring.” Students are set to take back the town in term two. Conveniently, perhaps most for parents doing the school run, right next to the school is The Yard, a series of boutique eateries, plus retail and office space. With more set to open, already operating are J-Bings (Chinese), Mokoji (Korean), Ceylon Kitchen (Sri Lankan) and Maison de Crepes. A repurposed 1950s printing hall, the exposed wood, brick, steel and concrete make for a cosy environment in which to relax, eat and meet. “Buildings,” Peter Marshall also wrote, “will have street frontages as well as communal outdoor space.” Ao Tawhiti and The Yard, and the south sides of EntX and the Justice Precinct, overlook Matai Common, a communal ‘gathering space’ on Mollett Street that includes seating, kai tables, cycle stands, native plants and trees, a story board, and a special “rain poem” stencilled into the laneway that is revealed only when the area is wet. With these significant projects nearing completion, as well as a host of residential developments, both completed and planned, in the East Frame and elsewhere, the CBD certainly is providing a new way to work and live.

hree years later that modernity is upon us and Christchurch denizens are indeed embracing it. Take a stroll around the central city and view some of the beautiful examples of the architecture dotting the Christchurch cityscape – the Deloitte Building, Tūranga, The Terrace, EntX, the bus interchange. With still a few significant anchor projects to be completed, notably the convention centre and sports facility, the CBD is a proverbial beehive of construction activity. What will eventually be a key feature on the border of the South Frame is Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery school. After being displaced by the earthquakes, the school – two inner-city schools which merged post-earthquake but have remained on separate campuses in Halswell and Ilam – will return to the new city campus near the Colombo corner of St Asaph Street. With the city as their resource – library, museum, arts precinct – and playground – Margaret Mahy, Botanic Gardens – this fantastic new building will reflect the school’s unique approach to learning. “Our new building allows us the chance to work as we did before the earthquakes in 2011. We will be able to use the city as our resource more effectively,” says Director Steven Mustor. Leaving the campuses that have been their home for eight years will bring mixed

Another initiative dear to the couple’s hearts is the Shear-AThon they devised to aid in suicide prevention. The 24-hour shearing challenge saw $45,000 raised by the local community, with $10,000 donated to four different organisations playing essential roles in mental health and wellbeing. “It is a good opportunity to get a feel for where we are sitting – we’re open to ideas and being challenged,” Duncan says of their achievements. “While the environmental side of things is important, the awards are not just looking at the environmental footprint of the farm – it’s the whole system, so there’s that much more to what you can learn from the judges.” The Ballance Farm Environment Awards champion sustainable farming and growing through an awards programme which sees one Regional Supreme Winner selected from each of the 11 regions involved. Colour is a complex phenomenon and theories about its effect on our minds and emotions range across the scientific and artistic realms. On the other hand, all it takes is a paintbrush and a pot of fresh paint to understand the powerful ability of colour to dramatically transform a space.
W
hich makes the Dulux Colour Awards one of the pinnacle events of the year, showcasing both the latest trends in colour and just what is possible in the realm of colour. A record-breaking 435 projects from New Zealand and Australian design professionals were entered in this year’s awards, with 114 finalists who displayed exceptional and inventive use of colour in built environments across both
commercial and residential spaces making the final cut. Finalists were chosen across six categories: Commercial Interior: Public and Hospitality; Commercial Interior: Workplace and Retail; Commercial and Multi-Residential Exterior; Residential Interior; Single Residential Exterior; and Student. Locally, the Rangiora RSA by Andrea Robertson Design is a finalist for the Commercial and
“Classic all black and all white remains popular, particularly in residential exteriors – they are shades being used to contrast against red brick or being layered to create a modern textured and tonal look. “We were also impressed with this year’s student entries, which delivered brave and unique colour concepts and applications.” The 33rd Dulux Colour Awards finalists will now be judged by a panel of leading figures in the design industry, with all category winners (excluding the Student category and Australian entrants), having the chance of taking home the New Zealand Grand Prix title and NZD $5,000. Australian entrants will have the chance of taking home the Australian Grand Prix title and AUS $5,000. Winners of the 33rd Dulux Colour Awards will be announced at a gala event at the National Gallery of Victoria on 8 May 2019. Multi Residential Exterior, along with seven other New Zealand projects. “Architects and designers have really set a new precedent with their masterful and innovative employment of colour to create unexpected, lively, playful and refined interior and exterior spaces,” Dulux Colour Specialist Davina Harper says. Moody reds and maroon have emerged as dominant colours in retail and commercial interiors, paired with unexpected tones such as peach and clay in the form of accent walls, stairwells, doors and trims. Deep shades of blue were a popular choice in residential interiors – from azure through to dark navy – seen in cabinetry and trims through to feature walls. Meanwhile, greens ranging from soft sage to emerald have lost none of their appeal adding sophistication, character and a sense of quiet luxury. “There has been a shift away from greys and cooler neutrals which have dominated interiors in previous years, with naturebased warm hues, such as beiges, terracotta and caramels coming to the fore,” Davina says.

orking alongside Borrmeister Architects, Parker Group Construction is currently building six distinctly different, high-end, inner-city dwellings right in the CBD. These dwellings are within walking distance of all the luxuries that inner-city living brings. Although they are so close to everything, you’ll relish the privacy and tranquillity these inner-city dwellings provide since they are nestled
down a private lane behind a well-maintained council reserve. Parker Group Construction has thoroughly enjoyed building these architecturally designed dwellings as each of them is so unique. Each dwelling exceeds two-hundred square metres and has eco-friendly, large windows providing warmth and natural light, but designed with the utmost privacy. What’s more, each dwelling boasts designer kitchens with European
appliances, two separate lounges, three large bedrooms and ensuites. All in all, these homes are irresistibly spacious with serious appeal. Once you arrive at this complex – either down the secure laneway or through the reserve and private access – you will be amazed by the large decks and extended outdoor living areas. You’ll appreciate each home for its own merits as they all have distinct differences

linked to safe, durable and affordable homes, buildings and infrastructure,” Prime Minister Ardern says. “To meet the future needs of New Zealand, both Government and industry recognise that we need to work differently.” Registered Master Builders Association (RMBA) Chief Executive David Kelly welcomes the introduction of the accord and has been working closely with Government and its agencies to establish a set of behavioural and value-based principles for the sector. “The Government has given clear commitments to the industry and New Zealanders that the construction sector is critical to the success of our communities and cities,” David says. “Our industry employs over 250,000 people and contributes $15 billion per annum to the economy. Our importance will continue to grow with the homes, commercial, industrial, and retail buildings needed now and in the future. New Zealand needs a healthy and vibrant construction sector, and this is a positive step towards achieving that.” For more information on the accord, visit www.constructionaccord.nz.

consulting structural engineers Ruamoko Solutions, says the Public Trust Building project involved earthquake strengthening of the iconic building to a minimum of 80% NBS. “Ruamoko had previously completed seismic strengthening work on this building in 2008 to achieve 33%NBS, which performed very well and ultimately prevented the collapse of this building in the Canterbury earthquakes,” he explains. “Commissioned in 2018 to provide seismic strengthening to 67%NBS, Ruamoko performed a sophisticated non-linear time history analysis which provided more surety around performance of the 67% scheme. “With minor modifications, our analysis resulted in an increase of the buildings strength to 80%NBS, which will allow the building to continue to remain an important part of the built environment in Christchurch.” Other important contributors to this redevelopment project have been T&A Construction and Dean Cowell at Three Sixty Architecture. The Christchurch City Council has also been instrumental in this project through its landmark heritage grant and the support provided through its experienced and knowledgeable heritage team, led by Brendan Smyth. With work well under way, Christchurch can once again look forward to the return of a well-known and remembered landmark. www.box112.nz

CELEBRATING SUCCESS
Eight years into the rebuild, Christchurch is continuing to command attention on the global stage for its richly developing urban spaces, a metamorphosis which is palpable, measurable and impressive.
H
owever, the extent to which the commercial backbone of the recovering city can fulfil its potential largely rests on the commercial shoulders of the identities spearheading the change in our built environment. Now it’s time to celebrate them! New Zealand’s foremost Building Industry Awards are designed to celebrate high performing
individuals and teams working across the industry. As the name New Zealand Building Industry Awards suggests, the focus of these awards is to acknowledge and celebrate the practitioners behind New Zealand’s most successful building projects. From the traditional Cost-band categories that have been part of the annual NZIOB awards programme since 1994, through to the more recent Consultants and Interdisciplinary Collaboration categories, the New Zealand Building Industry Awards have categories that all high-performing building practitioners can enter. The key point of difference with the New Zealand Building Industry Awards is that the finalists are recognised in front of an audience (and by an Institute) that represents the full building supplychain. The awards celebrate the achievements of the finalists, while promoting the companies that employ them as entities that value and practice high performance. Entries for the 2019 New Zealand Building Industry Awards close on Friday 10 May. For more information and to enter, visit www. nzbuildingindustryawards.org.nz.
