“Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.” – Gore Vidal
L
ooking down the line-up of The Crossing Fashion Starts Here Best Dressed Best Dressed finalists at Addington this year, I was struck by just how magnificent fashion is. It was Rachel Zoe that once said, ‘Fashion is a way to say who you are without having to speak’ and I’m not sure a truer word has ever been said on the topic. This year’s Best Dressed Lady sash was draped over Nikki Pagen’s white, red and blue ensemble; which was simple in aesthetic and yet impeccable in its execution. In a bright and brilliant contrast, runnerup Stephanie Murray was in sunny yellow from head-to-toe. Meanwhile, for the Best Dressed Man Matt Anderson, cobalt blue was the name of the fashion game, with a handstitched checked jacket that he paired with bright white pants. Despite – or perhaps because ABC AUDITED of – fashion’s increasingly casual constitution, the opportunity to welcome a much more traditional aesthetic is a welcome one. And yet, irrespective of the conservative nature of the day, we still manage to have fun with fashion, with hats, shoes and fascinators that are as colourful and creative as theAUDITED jockeys’ silks. But what caught my attention the most was the fact that every attendee – and there were 20,000 of them – was having a ball.

In spectacular fashion Christchurch kicked up its heels in spectacular fashion for the last Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting Cup of the decade.
I
t was a perfect sunny day for the 116th Christchurch Casino NZ Trotting Cup Day at Addington – the event of the year that approximately 20,000 people would not have missed. This month also celebrated the 25th anniversary of Cup Day’s naming rights sponsor and principal partner Christchurch Casino. Glass clinked and fine food was feasted upon as the music, merriment and headturning outfits bedazzled the year’s most coveted and anticipated event. On the roof of the luxurious Lindauer Lawn, with its views across the racetrack, revellers in their finery danced to the R and B vibes of Vince Harder, the Kiwi band most renowned for number one song Everything. Retro DJ band Automatic 80’s unleashed
nostalgia and inhibitions with tracks from a colourful era in The Edge Public Village. It was unanimous among judges and organisers that fashionistas in The Crossing Fashion Starts Here Competition had upped the stakes this year to a very high standard. And colour was everywhere. The Crossing Fashion Starts Here Best Dressed Lady went to Nikki Pagen for her sublime ensemble in white, red and blue – stunning in simplicity, yet with impeccable detailing. Runner-up Stephanie Murray matched the day perfectly in sunny yellow from head to toe. The Crossing Fashion Starts Here Best Dressed Man Matt Anderson was sophisticated in his locally custom-design hand-stitched checked jacket in cobalt blue
paired with cool white trousers. Twelve exciting races set hearts pounding. The Christchurch Casino NZ Trotting Cup was won by Cruz Bromac, driven by first-time winner Blair Orange. The Australian-owned winning horse was trained by Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen – their fourth consecutive win. One dollar from each race book sold at both the Christchurch Casino NZ Trotting Cup Day and Show Day Races went to St John, while 50 percent of revenue from the sale of the Cup Day Pin went to Ronald McDonald House South Island. The gold coin donation entry for the Show Day Races supported the Māia Health Foundation, where the kids’ entertainment zone and petting zoo proved to be a hit.

Q+A
A fairytale romance By Melinda Collins
When beloved television presenter Erin Simpson met former Bachelor contestant Zac Franich, it was love at first sight. So not surprisingly, their wedding day on 25 October was a fairytale come true. We catch up with Erin about the big day.
You were filming right up to the night before your wedding, something I’m sure no bride could fathom! How did the wedding go and was it everything you’d ever dreamed of? Yeah it wasn’t by choice haha. We had planned the wedding date before the role for Adventure All Stars came up. I nearly didn’t get the role because I needed the wedding day off so I was very grateful in the end to be able to do both. The week of your wedding doesn’t have to be a pampering, relaxed week, it is what you make it but I’m very lucky I had amazing friends and family who could bring my wedding dresses, shoes and all the things I needed and meet them there on the day! The Auckland Convention Centre fire nearly derailed everything, with your wedding at the next door Cathedral of St Patrick and St Joseph. How stressful was that period, not knowing how everything was going to pan out? I wouldn’t say it was stressful; I think the word ‘stress’ is a very overrated word. The SkyCity Convention Centre was on fire yes! The church was blocked off yes and very smoky yes! I was in the rural Rotorua bush with no cellphone reception, but at the end of the day, both these places are big enough to have back up plans and when things go wrong it’s just a matter of waiting to be told what to do. It wasn’t stressful, it was emotional! ‘New emotions’ is what I like to experience rather than stress. Can you tell us about the amazing story behind how you met? Haha yeah we met on the red carpet of the NZVMAs a few years back. I was reporting for TVNZ on a show called Red Carpet NZ and Zac was a guest on the carpet. He got to me at the end of the line and it was like we both just stood there and had conversations with ourselves. I was thinking, ‘OMG he looks so good,
OMG he’s single now! OMG, do I look good? OMG say something Erin, you’re working!’ But it was like he was having those conversations with himself at the exact same time! What proceeded to happen was one of my worst celebrity interviews to date! I can’t even remember what I said, oh no wait, I can, it’s all caught on camera! As soon as Zac passed, my camera man (who I work with all the time) put down his camera and said ‘what the heck was that?’ I couldn’t do anything but just stand there and giggle! Obviously the interview was too crap to ever make the big screen but he sent the footage to me the next day and so I posted it on my Instagram page (@ erinsimpson13) for everyone to see the magical disaster that was the time we met haha. You went from What Now? and Sticky TV to fronting The Erin Simpson Show. What attracted you to kids’ shows and performing? I guess children and teenagers have an energy and a beautiful outlook on life that a lot of adults lose as they get older. I myself have not lost any of that so I find I can be myself around them more and I wouldn’t call it performing, I’m not putting on an act, I’m just there as me. Then again, it’s not actually even about me; I’m simply there to move traffic and ask the questions on behalf of everyone watching at home. I’m there to make others shine, not perform. You made your home down here in Christchurch for much of your career. What do you love the most about our little southern spot? Christchurch is like the London of New Zealand. From Christchurch you can get in your car and drive anywhere you like and within a few hours be somewhere amazing that the rest of the world has to travel for days to simply come and see. What’s next for you after Adventure All Stars? I guess that’s the beauty of this industry, you just don’t know. I would hope we get a second season and I would hope more opportunities come up so I can showcase New Zealand and the beautiful people who live here. Otherwise, I will continue enjoying every day with my amazing new husband who I fell in love the very day I met him. What’s on your bucket list? Everything! I was telling Zac the other day, I never feel content. He went on to say ‘No, you’re like a meerkat; always up and looking for that next thing to do.’ So hopefully I never lose the will to see and do everything I can. Metropol 21 November, 2019 9

A
collection of six re-purposed industrial buildings on Welles Street, between Manchester and Colombo, have housed a range of businesses over the years, from an old welder’s workshop to a former grocery distribution centre. And, while they’ve been given a healthy new lease on life as the first-ever health and wellbeing centre of this scale in New Zealand, the developers have paid due homage to the buildings’ former residents.
The business hub, created by local property development firm Box 112, includes a yoga studio, a plant-based treat store, two bread and baked goods specialists, a wholefoods refillery, a juicery, a wine and tapas bar, a yakitori restaurant and an indoor plants store – for many of them, Canterbury was their commercial birthplace and the city remains close to their hearts. Box 112 has built its developmental empire by purchasing, fitting out and
leasing buildings throughout the city, but with a unique appreciation of architectural history, they’re all about the stories behind the spaces. “Buildings are not just spaces, they have memories attached to them,” codirector James Stringer says. Rejuvenating the semi-industrial area south of Tuam Street is a project close to the company’s commercial heart and The Welder now stands as testament to this tireless dedication.

And cold pressed organic juice cleanse company Greenroots Juicery has opened Barefoot Eatery here. Stewart Corkin and the clever crew behind Corkin + Friends have opened a plush new hairdressing space in the development, while Flourish Foliage provides a range of indoor plants and related products. Rhiannon and Elsie are the passionate pairing behind The Great Pastry Shop,
while GoodFor allows you to stock up on your pantry goods without the wasteful packaging that comes with it. Christchurch’s very own modern craft bakery, Grizzly Baked Goods, has also made its home here, along with modern-day tea merchants Noble and Savage. The Two Raw Sisters bring their creative approach to plant-based food through workshops, catering, cookbooks and videos, and you’ll also find vino and tapas bar Salut Salut here, along with destination homewares store, Sollos. www.thewelder.nz

Living life t He’s broken his back in three places and suffered a serious heart attack, but Jason Gunn isn’t letting life get him down.
J
ason laid it all on the table for a packed audience at Alpine View Lifestyle Village, courtesy of their TRILife Talks Wellness Programme last month; the ups, the downs and everything in between. Living life in the limelight since he was 18 years old, he recounts his high profile career; the best part he says, was children’s television, something which also enabled him to bring joy to sick children in hospital. The first was a young girl he’d been asked to sit with for 20 minutes to cheer her up. Those 20 minutes became four hours, pushing her around in a wheelchair and drawing her funny cartoon pictures. About 10 years later, when he was making another show in Wellington, a young girl
races up to him and says, ‘Hi Jason Gunn, I don’t know if you remember me, but you came to see me when I was young and my mum said you gave me the will to live!’ Two years ago, Jason’s daughter Faith moved to Dunedin to do a degree in photography. A young woman had come over to check out the flat and Faith agreed she could have the remaining room. Just as she was leaving, she pointed to some drawings and said ‘what’s that?’ Faith said, ‘I was just doing some drawings that my dad taught me to do and the young lady said, ‘is your dad Jason Gunn?’ “So for the last two years, that little girl I went and saw in hospital has been looking after my little girl in Dunedin.
Sometimes when you do a little bit of something for someone else it comes around again.” Jason went from children’s television to prime-time television, which is when Dancing with the Stars came in. He got to meet some interesting people, including Tim Shadbolt, Rodney Hyde and Paul Holmes. Jason describes Sir Tim as a genius and says you could ask him anything and he would manage to turn it around to Invercargill. He describes meeting Sir Paul Holmes as “an honour”. Some time later, there was a new show in town, New Zealand’s Got Talent, hosted by Tamati Coffey. A newspaper review said, ‘finally we’ve got the Jason Gunn we always wanted’. Jason received two
messages on his phone that night. The first one said, ‘don’t ever forget son, there will only ever be one Jason Gunn’. The next new message was one minute later, ‘oh s**t sorry, I forgot to say, it’s Paul’. It was just two weeks before Paul passed away. Jason also recounts the infamous Rodney Hyde drop. “They got the lowest score in the history of Dancing with the Stars which included a one and a one and a one, which Rodney pointed out to me was the number for St John – their chosen charity!” It’s not just Rodney that has been accident-prone. When staying in Queenstown in 2016, helping a neighbour out by squishing rubbish into the wheelie bin turned ugly when

he broke his back in three places. ACC actually contacted him to say thank you. “They said ‘last year, Jason, there were over 717 injuries due to wheelie bins, but after your accident that’s down to 600’, so I made a difference!” About two years ago, his next hospital stay was a bit more serious. The gym attendant was convinced Jase had been pushing it too hard, so he drove himself back to work where his wife convinced him to see a doctor, who called an ambulance immediately. It was a heart attack and required an operation to get a stent put in. It was an experience that would teach him what was important in life. “It isn’t about what you think about but what you don’t think about. I didn’t think about work, didn’t worry about money, didn’t worry about stresses; all I thought about was my four gorgeous children.” Along with photographer Faith, there is Grace, an actress who appeared on Shortland Street for two years playing nurse Lucy; Eve, who was
WANTED
previously one half of the long running TVNZ youth programme The Adam & Eve Show and is currently working with Jason in his new speaking business, until she heads off next year to do a psychology degree; there’s Louis who loves his cricket and rugby; then there’s his wife Janine who runs everything - the house and the business. A doctor in hospital after his heart attack told him that he now had permission to change anything in his life – change house, change wife… and while he has had no desire to change either of those things, there have been some changes. He’s been spending more time with his family, he’s doing less radio and television and he’s started his own speaking business so he can work on his own terms. Now he’s getting to meet all sorts of people to help them with their speaking and his biggest dream is to get into schools and teach children. And you just know that with an attitude like Jason’s, he’s going to get there.

Challenge the
#Unspoken Rules We all know the ‘unspoken rules’ for being a man; rules like ‘be the man’, ‘toughen up’ and ‘boys don’t cry’. They are the expectations that boys and young men inherit from society, based on outdated ideas of what a man is, how he acts and how he should express himself. Even if we don’t agree with them, these rules still exist silently in the background for far too many.
W
hite Ribbon’s ‘Challenge the #Unspoken Rules’ campaign is letting us know it’s time for the stereotypes to stop, and tough-looking men (and women) on motorcycles are on a week-long tour promote healthy masculinity. South Island Ride Leader Ken Mahon says if boys aren’t encouraged to show emotions such as sadness and anger in healthy ways, it can lead to bottling up of emotions, mental health challenges, aggression and violence. Ken says these #unspoken rules such as ‘boys don’t cry’ have a negative impact on our young men. “It puts real pressure on boys to behave in certain ways. They suppress their emotions and their individuality and this can have a real effect on their mental health. It begins to create unhealthy attitudes that can affect how they treat their partners.”
14 21 November, 2019 Metropol
The South Island Ride is now in its ninth year, having started in 2011. Each year the riders send out a registration of interest to communities and build the ride around those towns that are keen to have them visit and promote their anti-violence messages. “This is my first year as the Ride Leader so I’m really chuffed about that,” Ken says. “We have a great team of riders with a range of skills. Some are great at talking to students, some can play the guitar and so far they’re all very proficient riders.” Ken says the key thing is that they are caring people who want to help reduce the terrible rates of violence in our communities. “When 41 percent of a frontline officer’s time is spent dealing with family violence, you know we have a serious problem. “This is the first year we are talking about the myths that we pass down to our children. The men I’ve talked to all
responded to these messages. They’ve all heard these #unspoken rules and experienced the negative impacts that occur when you believe you shouldn’t cry, or that you have to toughen up or be the man.” Ken says the message is to let both adults and our young men know that being a man is about so much more than being tough. Christchurch is looking forward to seeing you guys hit the city! How much are you all looking forward to coming here? We can’t wait to spend the summer of 2020 in Christchurch! What better way to spend a summer evening than in a champagnesoaked alternate universe inside the magnificent Spiegeltent?! What can Christchurch look forward to from the Blanc de Blanc show? If you loved LIMBO in last years’ Bread & Circus festival, you’re going to go absolutely nuts for Blanc de Blanc. The show is the epitome of hedonistic, glamorous escapism, but the rich aesthetic is backed up by the world’s very best circus and cabaret talent. Blanc de Blanc really has style and substance. Blanc de Blanc has been all over – from Sydney Opera house to London’s West End, and it’s currently in Las Vegas! The cast and show are so well-oiled now, but every time we come to a new city,
the show takes on a slightly different energy. Having the show inside the Spiegeltent and as part of a larger festival is what will make Blanc’s Christchurch run really unique. What’s the story behind the name? The show derives its inspiration and aesthetic from champagne both literally and figuratively. Just like the drink, Blanc de Blanc is effervescent, glamourous and intoxicating. This show is guaranteed to pop your cork – it’s a production that pops, fizzes and bangs.

It’s going to be an absolute party.

ADVERTORIAL
O’Marama Lyttelton’s Gracious Lady
Starting at exceptionally beautiful and swiftly working its way up from there, O’marama stands as a perfect example of colonial craftsmanship partnered with contemporary renovation and refurbishment.
C
ommanding, compelling and completely set up for 21st century comfort, this incomparable two storey home, with its panoramic views of Lyttelton Harbour, Quail Island and the bays, has seen some outstanding entertaining over the years, starting with its first garden party more than 100 years ago and barely drawing breath since. Originally built for Canterbury jeweller, Augustus Jones, heritage it may be, but it has never been for display purposes only. Loved from top to bottom, inside and out, by its current owners for almost 50 years, it
really is a tribute to the original craftsmanship and the 6500 hours of restoration recently undertaken - this grand lady has been updated, insulated, primped and preened ready to face down the next 100 years and then some. A former Civic Trust Award winner for restoration and heritage, it includes unique features such as the tower skylight, designed by John Davies, with coloured glass panels in the English conservatory styled kitchen and family dining area, throwing rainbows across the floor and bench tops.
Lightshades crafted by the late and brilliant inventor John Britten hang over the billiard table on the lower level and the matchlined woodwork, neo-Gothic detailing, original iron locks and the beautiful fretwork on the verandas all combine to create O’marama’s unique beauty. Four large double bedrooms with two bathrooms across two levels offer great flexibility for future use, be that as a family home, work-from-home proposition, accommodating extended family or, with consent, an Air BnB situation. The master bedroom (with separate dressing room) is enchanting, light and bright, and offers endless unobstructed harbour views. With the exception of a book-lined study in rich Turkish red and the Billiard room downstairs, the all-white colour palette and high stud amplifies the enormous amount of light throughout this magnificent home. This ‘gracious lady’ nestles amongst mature landscaped gardens and park-like grounds comprising some 9726m2 (2.4 acres more or less). It’s large
enough to look into potential subdivison (with consent),but imagine having your own tennis court or pool! So private that you could imagine you are in the country - except you’re just a stroll down the hill into bubbling, bohemian Lyttelton and the new Marina precinct, or a ten-minute drive into the city. There is plenty of off-street parking, drive in access and a new double garage. Had the owners not decided, with considerable reluctance, to downsize, you wouldn’t get them out of here with a crowbar. Their friends, who have whiled away many happy hours dining on the verandas, courtyards, or in the welcoming living spaces, are none too happy about their move either. So, for the discerning buyer who appreciates this exceptional property - she is now for definite sale. Once O’marama is sold it could well be another 50 years before it ever comes back onto the market. Life’s too short to take that sort of chance! LOCK IN A DEMO NOW AT 24 MOORHOUSE AVE
in the city
Transitioning to a digital workplace In 1888, lawyer Thomas de Renzy Harman was busy in central Christchurch when a 50-second long earthquake shook the city, causing the spire of Christchurch Cathedral to collapse.
M
ore than 120 years later, the firm of Harmans Lawyers was even busier, still operating within the central city when the 2011 earthquake struck. Fortunately, Harmans had by then expanded to Papanui, operating out of two offices, and the city staff were able to relocate to the Papanui premises. This enabled colleagues to collaborate within the one site, ensuring Harmans was able to continue its unbroken line of legal service to the greater Canterbury region. “Working all together in Papanui had enhanced our collegial culture, and we thought hard about Harmans’ location when the city was being rebuilt,” Managing Partner Graeme Riach says.
“We decided to keep the Papanui branch because our clients love the ease of access, but also to move back into the central city because that is our first home and we have corporate clients based there. Proximity to the court is also an advantage for our litigators.” A 12-year technology partnership with Ricoh aided Harmans in making the transition to a digital workplace an easy one. Their meeting room solutions enabled Harmans to run multiple offices collaboratively. “With our Ricoh system for video conferencing in place, we feel like a firm
based in one office, but with the advantages of central and suburban sites.” The Papanui office features a 55-inch Ricoh Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) and a 75-inch IWB is fitted in the conference room in the city office. Each has a Crestron Sound Bar and the system integrates seamlessly into Harmans’ IT environment. “We have meetings between the two offices and it is almost like an extension of the room. The microphone on the wall is so effective compared to the old way of huddling round a central one,” Graeme says. In fact, Ricoh’s core product, the IWB, takes you far beyond video conferencing. It can be either wall-mounted or set up
as a table top. It functions as a traditional Windows PC, while also operating like a traditional whiteboard, enabling you to write with your finger. The whiteboard function allows you to overlay data, plans or images on your screen, enabling you to alter, design, highlight and rearrange with a fingertip. You can save work straight to your computer, print, and email instantly from the screen. The applications for the IWBs are almost endless. They are ideal for companies where client presentations are integral, perfect for small and large group training and even for standard meetings. Graeme says “From a lawyer’s point of view, we need quality of output, and speed and reliability is key. We always found Ricoh better than their competitors in copying and printing technology, and now have found their IWB plus soundbar set up better than we had hoped for.” Peter O’Connor of Ricoh says, “We’ve focused on making our meeting room solutions simple – often any more than three steps and staff won’t use the technology, so it’s just point, click and connect. Completely wireless, there’s no messy cables or plugging in, everything is shared over Wi-Fi networks.” “Our system is completely pre-set to us,” Graeme says. “We can simply send a weblink to clients on email, and that’s time and money saved for everyone.” Metropol 21 November, 2019 23

The joint capsule was completely shredded and acetabular ligament ruptured. The ball and socket joint were a mess. Max underwent a surgical reconstruction of the joint capsule and a replacement of the acetabular ligament with a synthetic ligature and anchoring toggle. Max bounced back from the surgery quickly, weight-bearing the very next day, and was looking forward to getting back to his regular routine, but his other injuries held him back. Max had sustained a few scrapes in the accident. The largest one on his opposite leg began to break down. He had a minor surgery to investigate and clean the wound and a few small pieces of gravel were found deeply embedded in it, despite the rigorous flushing this wound had previously received at the initial incident. As his wounds began to heal, Max went from strength to strength. He quickly became the clinic favourite, carrying his bone in his mouth with a big goofy grin. Jump around: jumpsuits will never go out of fashion; they’re somehow a perfect mix of elegant and practical and can be styled for any occasion. Whether you’re feeling a classic black or a fun floral pattern, anything works. Sexy in silk: midi silk skirts are definitely in. They’re popping up in most of our favourite stores. Breathable and soft on your skin, you won’t be complaining about comfort when you’re dancing around at your next event. Trending tassels: they’re hard to miss when they’re hanging off most earlobes these days. Your colour options are basically that of the colour wheel… endless. They’ll always add a bit of personality to any outfit. A fun way to incorporate them into your outfit is by matching them with the colour of your shoes. Can’t be tamed: Animal print is a trend that definitely ducks in and out of the fashion trend cycle, but it’s very much in style this season. A leopard print midi skirt is a staple item and if you want to listen to our advice even more, don’t forget those tassel earrings!

Keeping it cool By Jess Murray
We all love the idea of summer until it actually hits; that heat that you were wishing for can sometimes be too hot to handle. There are only so many layers we can take off until it’s no longer acceptable to go out in public. While Lana Del Rey sings about her summertime sadness, we’ve found a way for you to beat it. The answer is simple: white linen. This wardrobe essential will keep you both looking and feeling cool this summer.
I
t appears that the fashion trend cycle has done its rounds – once extremely popular in the 1990s, white linen attire has been bought back into style nearly 30 years later. This may have something to do with the fact that the fabric is very soft and breathable, making it the perfect outfit choice for the warmer seasons. White linen shirts were most popular poolside, thrown over
some swimwear, providing slightly more protection than sunscreen. It could be styled one of two ways, left loose and hanging or unbuttoned and tied at your midriff. Nowadays you’ll find ‘linen anything’ – shirts, skirts, shorts, pants, dresses, jumpsuits, jackets and even scrunchies. It’s definitely the go-to fabric choice when you’re trying to keep it cool.

that reflects the combination of medicine and artistry that cosmetic medicine is all about,” Dr Philip Frost says. It has worked… the new clinic is just the right mix of clinical professionalism and warmth of character. The building’s previous
life as a family home is evident but surpassed by the extensive renovations to fully comply with all requirements for a medical facility. This was important to Dr Frost and the team as clients need to be assured when undergoing any cosmetic medical procedure that they are in the safest of hands and in a facility that meets the highest standards. There is plenty of space to grow Face Value further and develop the clinic as a centre of excellence in cosmetic medicine. Dr Frost is a senior accredited member of the NZ Society of Cosmetic Medicine; an important criterion in an

Almost all gum diseases can be treated, if detected early. There’s no need to lose a tooth due to them.” Dr Akrum supervises her team of hygienists closely (who can treat moderate gum disease cases), possibly lessening the need for full specialist treatment. “I guide our hygienists to clean the way specialists clean.” With the latest technology at their fingertips, Christchurch PerioHygiene also offers a range of anaesthetic options in an environment that strives to be comforting for patients. t was long rides on the tube in the UK that sparked Mark’s lifelong passion for a more holistic approach to health. Utilising the travelling time to study, he picked up some short courses through the University of Manchester; one was in nutrition and one was in complementary therapies. “That was probably the very beginning of my journey,” he says. A book, Complementary Therapies, introduced him to the idea that as a pharmacist, you may not agree with complementary therapies, but if you don’t at least gain a basic understanding of them, you risk losing a growing portion of your clientele to somebody down the road who has no knowledge or understanding of medicine. “I
thought that was a very sensible position,” Mark says. Working in UK hospitals after his pharmaceutical training, Mark quickly realised the Kiwi expression ‘see you later’, wasn’t as warmly received as it was on our side of the globe. “English people didn’t want to ‘see you later’ because that meant they would be back in hospital. So if they had just had an acute admission, I would say ‘I hope you’re feeling better soon’ and if they had come in for a simple check up with their specialist and everything was fine, I would say ‘stay well’ and that received a really positive response.” When he returned to New Zealand, he recognised a change in health was taking place.
Some of the healthfood store workers had started wearing white smocks which had traditionally been the pharmacist’s label, and the very way we view our health had changed. “Rather than looking for curative methods, we were now looking for managerial methods,” Mark says. “We’re managing diabetes, managing our mental health and managing our cardiovascular health. I felt that in my industry, there were ‘get better’ pharmacies and ‘stay sick’ pharmacies and there was not a lot of proactive work going into staying well.” ‘Staying well’ is now Mark’s mantra, a moniker that has also become the name of both his Hornby pharmacy, and his clinic. Stay Well Pharmacy opened in 2001 and, just a few years later after joining the Australian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine, where he learned about how nutritional medicine interfaces with allopathic or westernstyle medicine, he opened up a clinic at the pharmacy, enabling Christchurch customers to access a next-level care, which encompasses diet, exercise and lifestyle. “I soon realised that wasn’t quite enough,” Mark says. “I needed to find some allies and there weren’t many in New Zealand.” He enrolled with the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M), completing their fellowship programme and becoming board-certified. “Even though that qualification is well-

health
known in the US, it’s not widely recognised here,” he says. “I also recognised that I’m working with a group of people who only recognise scientific, evidence-based, peer-reviewed information and if I wanted to be considered to be a leader in my field, I needed a recognised qualification – a degree.” Working around his clinic and pharmacy, Mark completed his Masters of Health Science in Integrated Medicine through George Washington University in May this year. In June, he relocated his Stay Well clinic to Merivale where he practises integrative medicine at the Alpha Omega Clinic in Leinster Road. “There needed to be somebody in the middle who could connect all the practitioners together,” Mark says of his journey. “That’s what integrative medicine is; it’s a bringing together of the best of everybody, for the fulfillment of the patient.” Medical organisations deal extremely well with the acute, Mark says. “So if you’ve been in a trauma accident and you’re bleeding or you’ve had a heart attack or sudden downturn in health, the medical model works exceptionally well, but they struggle to work well with the long term; the chronic. They don’t work with the ‘why’, they just work with the ‘how’. “The number one thing I’ve learnt is that we are all individuals; there’s no rubber stamp for everyone; no one diet that will suit everyone; no medicine that suits everyone. I help people to recognise that their personal picture of health is a 37 pieces jigsaw puzzle. Without addressing the foundational corners of the puzzle; sleep, hygiene, stress and relaxation, movement and exercise, and diet and nutrition, it can be problematic to successfully piece together the internal pieces to complete the optimal picture.” “What I do is allow people to have a broader perspective of their health and the options that are available. It’s ideal for somebody who is sick and tired of being sick and tired, but also people who are currently healthy and want to stay well.” Stay Well Clinic is at 154 Leinster Road. Gut Feelings In the inner sanctum of our colon exists a wonderfully complicated eco system, which is is a large community of living organisms, known as our microbiome. The Gut Foundation’s General Manager Margaret Fitzgerald tells us about the relationship between the gut biome, the vagus nerve and the brain, and why we should make healthier food choices. The molecular biologist Joshua Lederberg explains it “as all the microorganisms, bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and fungi, and their collective genetic material present in the gastrointestinal tract.” In reality, there is a vast city of trillions of little creatures at work down there in your gut. Through research our scientists and health professionals now know a lot more about our microbiome than we used to.
They know, for example, that it can regulate your body weight, and that it not only protects your gut from invaders but also regulates your entire immune system. They also know that our biome takes food our body can’t digest and turns it into hormones and other chemicals. New research in the last five years has shown that there is a strong link between our gut biome and our immune system
and nervous system, including the brain. As microbes in our gut digest our food they make tiny parcels called short chain fatty acids. These trigger messages which travel to the brain via the long vagus nerve. The vagus nerve is known as the “wandering nerve” because it has multiple branches that diverge from two thick stems rooted in the cerebellum and brainstem that wander to the lowest viscera of your abdomen touching your heart and most major organs along the way. Vagus means “wandering” in Latin. The words vagabond, vague and vagrant are all derived from the same Latin root. I really enjoyed a recent trip to Australia where I attended a new exhibition at the Melbourne Museum which collaborated with researchers from Melbourne Neuropsychiatry Centre. The exhibition, titled ‘Gut Feelings: Your Mind, Your Microbes’, explored the connection between our brains and our guts. One of the wonderful headlines used to engage their audience was “eating for trillions”. This was
followed up with the following “Your gut is awash with microbe including helpful bacteria, fungi, viruses and more. They are with you always. These trillions of friends are constantly digesting food, making nutrients and talking to your body. In return, you provide the perfect home for them. When you eat, they eat, so what you eat is important. You encourage the good microbes to flourish and the bad ones to die off, simply by eating well. It’s up to you to keep them in balance.” I am now even more aware of the importance of making healthy food choices to encourage the population of good ones to amass and shut out the unhealthy ones. Here in Canterbury we have medical scientists working on understanding more and more about the gut and you can help them. Donate to gut research and you are ensuring our medical and scientific experts learn more and more about helping you to keep a healthy body through a healthy gut biome. https://www.thegut.org.nz/getinvolved/donations/ Metropol 21 November, 2019 43

A Dream Retirement Nestled in the heart of the genteel locale of Merivale is one of our city’s most forward-thinking retirement complexes that ticks all the boxes when it comes to providing superior quality care for retirees looking to kick back and enjoy the good life in luxurious comfort and style.
erivale Retirement Village provides residential solutions for all stages of retirement – whether that be leading up to, and including, rest home-level care in one of their beautifully appointed serviced apartments, or more independent living in a villa, or in one of the soon-to-be available terrace townhouses. The airy, spacious one-bedroom serviced apartments start from $350,000 and deliver everything in feel and appeal, with sunny and warm aspects, thoughtfully appointed interiors and patio areas that are both pretty and peaceful. As far as safety and security go, residents of the serviced apartments are assured of peace of mind, and they have access to the best in rest homelevel care, with a continuum of care and support options should that time come. The added bonus is that although retaining their independence as individuals in an intimate setting, there is also connectivity with other residents to ensure a strong and vibrant social life. As the serviced apartments are housed within the main complex, residents have easy access to the in house café, where tasty and nutritious meals are served daily, as well as the hair salon, library, and for a fun-filled happy hour, the very popular Stokesy’s Bar is but a stroll from the main atrium. For those retirees wanting complete independence but within a secure environment, the north-
facing two and three bedroomed villas are ideal. Open plan kitchen, living and dining lend a timeless elegance, while sun-strewn private courtyards only ramp up the ambience. Internal access garaging provides convenient house entry for residents, while their visitors can utilise the off-street parking space. Saving the most exciting news until last, Merivale Retirement Village now has eleven terrace townhouses available to purchase off plan! With the first stage to be completed by mid-2020, these exclusive two-storey homes comprise three bedrooms with walk-in robes an0d ensuites, expansive open-plan kitchen, dining and living areas that open out to north-facing, private paved terrace courtyards. Factor in luxury features such as an Escea gas fireplace in the living room; a fully ducted Fujitsu HVAC System; surround ceramic tiling and underfloor heating in the bathroom; an internal twostop lift; double car garaging; a security system that’s secondto-none, and all set amongst park-like surroundings that won a Canterbury Horticultural Society Garden Award, and without a doubt, you have the ultimate dream retirement home. For a personal guided tour to turn dreams into reality, contact Leah Moore 03 375 4117 or 021 971 487. Email reception@ merivaleretirement.co.nz Metropol 21 November, 2019 45

Endovascular,Vascular & Transplant Surgery Peter Laws was instrumental in the functional design and build of Specialists at 256 Papanui, a new purpose-built medical facility in Merivale. “Working in a new facility with purpose-built clinic rooms, ultrasound and procedure rooms really makes the whole process simple, efficient and easy.”

THE EXPERTS IN THE FINE ART OF THREADING
V
aricose veins can be assessed, scanned and treated all within one great facility. “I was recommended to Peter Laws for treatment of my veins that had become quite debilitating,” one delighted patient says. “The procedure was done under local anaesthetic and was pain-free and an easy recovery. I was astonished at the quick result and how amazing I felt only a week later.” While Specialist Vascular Surgeon Peter Laws is renowned for the investigation and treatment of varicose veins, vascular surgery involves so much more. Aneurysmal disease (a dilated blood vessel) and peripheral vascular disease (hardening and narrowing of the arteries) are two such conditions. Aneurysmal disease is a silent progressive and potentially fatal condition which affects up to five percent of men over the age of 65. Amazingly, it can be excluded with a very simple, painless and extremely quick ultrasound scan, and where treatment is indicated, modern techniques may see you home as soon as the next day after treatment. Peripheral vascular disease, on the other hand, is often symptomatic resulting in pain in the calves on walking. When advanced, it can lead to more debilitating symptoms with pain at rest and worse. Simple blood pressure measurements can confirm or exclude this condition, leading to primary prevention advice, techniques and measures that can often help to reduce the severity, reverse or treat the condition when indicated. Whatever your vascular condition, Peter Laws and his team will be able to advise and guide you through the process. Why not make an appointment today and get some peace of mind for the summer? raving a sweet treat? You’ve come to the right place! Sweet Société is a boutique French-inspired bakery in The Colombo that’s a wonderland of heavenly flavours. J’aime Les Macarons have recently introduced their summer macaron selection which features 12 new tempting flavours such as watermelon, pistachio and orange sorbet –

With Christmas just around the corner, treats like shortbread, pies, cupcakes and the ever-popular meringues make for tantalising additions to the table, while gift boxes of macarons or the popular local favourite She Chocolate are bound to delight as a cute present for under the tree. For something a little different, the Central Otago apricots preserved in riesling are a smart choice for any food fanatic. Premium organic New Zealand tea range Libertine is the newest addition to the tea menu, which also features iced milk frappes and crowd favourite Harney & Sons tea. Stuck for what to get

resist an Eggs Benny, they’ll fill your plate high. Meanwhile, the cabinet features homemade sweet and savoury favourites – ginger and pistachio slice (you’d never know it is gluten-free) and the oversized Pork Sausage Roll. They take food seriously and strive to provide their customers with delicious and wholesome food to suit any dietary requirement (some upon request). While they know the perfect brew is essential, they also don’t mind bending the rules, so you get the perfect cup of coffee to fit your taste. Running the machine with a few familiar faces makes getting to know your barista that much easier. With a few decades of coffee knowledge between them all, the crew at Craft Room Café know their stuff. Craft Room Café is open from 7:30am weekdays, 8am weekends, until 4pm daily. Support your local laid-back café, enjoy the sunshine out on the terrace and let Craft Room Café prove that delicious food and coffee doesn’t have to be too serious.
Method Jam: Place raspberries and rice bran syrup in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Allow the berries to cook slowly, stirring regularly and squashing them down with a fork. Cook until berries have broken down, about 5-10 minutes. Take off heat and stir in chia seeds. Set aside. Lamington Balls: Place cashews and shredded coconut in a food processor and process until it resembles crumbs. Add rice bran syrup, vanilla and dairy-free milk and process until mixture comes together and gets a bit sticky. Transfer to a bowl and add chia jam, stir until it is swirled through. Take heaped teaspoons of mixture and roll into balls. Line a tray with baking paper. Melt raw chocolate. Pour desiccated coconut onto a plate. Cover each ball in chocolate before rolling in coconut and setting on the tray to dry. Store in the fridge.
Toast to champagne By Nicholas Henare
At this time of year, we are turning our heads to celebrations; Christmas parties and family get-togethers. Regardless of the event, nothing says celebration like the most prestigious of wines: champagne.
A
severe set of winters in the 49th parallel north in the 1600s saw the French offloading late-fermenting, sweet – about 30 grams of sugar per bottle – slushy pink bubbly stuff to the English. Surprisingly, they started to really love it. It wasn’t until Dom Pérignon refined the process in 1662 and the invention by the English of a bottle that could take the pressure of the bubbles that the beverage began to take its modern form. Today there are 260-odd champagne houses in France and each has a rich history; from the story of Clicquot, a woman widowed at 30 with a young baby who invented the riddling process and built a fierce empire, to the tale of Jean-Rémy Moët who became famous as a supplier to Napoleon and his armies. Most champagne is comprised of pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier, but what champagne is best, and why? What do you choose for that special moment when you celebrate? I’ve been fortunate enough to taste some of the best that the world of champagne has to offer and it all
Serving locally sourced food with an interesting twist. Creative, delicious dishes
comes down to personal taste and style. At a recent Laurent Perrier masterclass, I sampled the Cuvée Rosé, Grand Siècle, the Ultra and La Cuvée; all stunning champagnes but I found base champagne the Ultra was my favourite. My go-to is Veuve Clicquot but many of my friends prefer Moët or Dom Pérignon. The choices per brand are also wide. Do you go for a vintage? A rosé? A Brut? Here are some highlights that stand out for me this Christmas. Moët & Chandon is set to unveil its holiday-season collection to mark the 150th anniversary of its flagship expression, Moët Impérial. This limited-edition bottle is dressed for the holidays in a shimmering gold leaf sleeve. Veuve Clicquot Pencil and Clicquot Pencil Rosé also have special cases, one that keeps your bottle chilled for up to two hours! Then there’s the biggie, the new limited-edition collaboration between Dom Pérignon and Lenny Kravitz. Dom Pérignon is 2008 vintage only – it’s hard to get hold of and retails for $300. Napoleon Bonaparte would take Moët to each battle. After all, he was said to say, ‘In victory you deserve it; in defeat you need it’. Salut!

experience working as a chef, including for a variety of international 7-star hotels and restaurants. The extensive menu at Indian Zaika demonstrates his impressive skills and knowledge of Indian cuisine. The dishes are created using fresh, local produce, with mostly everything made on-site from scratch. Well-known for his beautiful naan bread, one of his many stand-out favourite dishes is the Fish Masala – fresh fish cooked in Indian-style curry, spices and herbs. The small restaurant offers a welcoming, intimate environment. Seating up to only 40 people means extra attentive customer service from the friendly staff, and no long waits for meals. Takeaway is also available, and the $10 lunch meal, which includes curry, rice and naan bread, offers great value. Effortless Entertaining By Jess Murray
The days are getting warmer and the BBQs are getting dusted off. We’re quickly heading into the season of entertaining, which means one thing: stress. In the next few months we have the big events like Christmas and New Year’s, not to mention the smaller dinner parties, barbeques and just general celebrating.
N
ot surprisingly, you want to be the ‘hostess with the mostest’. So rather than spending excessive amounts of your time scrolling through the internet to
1. Summer lovin’: we can’t change the weather, but we can try our best to plan around it. Although it seems like an obvious tip, make sure you’re prepared for four seasons in one day. There’s nothing worse than hosting an outdoor party and the weather turns. If you’re well prepared, executing plan B will be much less stressful than having to wing it on the day.

(Not so) fine china: while grandma’s china that has been passed down for generations usually makes an appearance at these sorts of events, it’s not the be all and end all of your gatherings. Paper plates and cutlery are a much cheaper and more practical option with zero dishes and they won’t break hearts if they’re accidentally dropped on floor; the same can’t be said about the china. Grandma will understand.
You’re in luck: just because you’re hosting the event doesn’t mean that you should do all of the heavy lifting. Having a potluck-style event allows for some of the work to be shared around. Not only that, but people who have food allergies or preferences could bring a dish that they’ll be able to both eat and enjoy.
Quality not quantity: decorations are a nice touch but it’s unnecessary to attempt to transport your guests into a new world. Something as simple as flowers or a mason jar filled with fairy lights are an easy way to make a space look like you’ve slaved over it for hours. Besides, isn’t it more about the company than the presentation?

The Great Divide By Jess Murray
Room dividers have long been the coolest way to divide and conquer.
W
hile they are simply folding screen panels that are used to create separation between zones in the home, there are so many other quirky ways to utilise this transformative homeware and we thought it would be rude not to share them with you. Dividing curtains are a great way to make a room multipurpose or make your open-plan living a tiny bit less open. If you’re wanting to integrate a sleeping area into a multifunctional space without
using solid walls, curtains are an elegant alternative to wall dividers. If you’re wanting to take the illusion of a solid wall even further, hanging floating artwork is a perfect way to do so. Whether it’s accompanying a curtain or not is up to you. This can be done by attaching a wire from either side of the painting and suspending it from the roof. While the folding screen panels are mainly used for dividing, they can also double as a makeshift wardrobe and changing area. We’ve seen it on almost
every rom-com makeover montage; the characters hanging their clothes over the screen and disappearing behind it. So, why not feel like you’re in your own movie too? A final inventive way the folding screens can be used around the house is by fastening them to a wall. While this does defeat the purpose of the homeware’s original use – dividing – it does make for a cool wall feature hung above your living room sofa. Why divide, when you can display?

HOW TO BRING
Building a dream home should always be a great adventure that comes with an extremely satisfying and happy ending. There are things you can do to ensure that your vision for your home is brought to reality in every detail. am Fleetwood of Fleetwood Construction talked to us about the process of finding a builder. “You need to ascertain their honesty,
integrity, workmanship and ability to communicate. We advise going through these steps as a bare minimum, before you sign.”
Ask around for recommendations. Once you find a builder you like, ask to speak to some previous clients about their experience. You can even ask to have a look around one of their current building sites to see how they work and meet some of their team. Look into how long your builder has been in business and if they have been doing the type of work you require for a long time. See what awards they’ve won for this type of work. Research your builder’s social media and website to find out what type of work they have done, and if they have the right skills to build your home. Establish the resources they have available – how many in their team, how many they would put on your job, and what qualifications do they have. Are they good at communication? How will they communicate with you? You can find this out in the very early stages of contact with your builder. Make sure the builder is fully licensed, or even better, a registered Master Builder.

Enhancing Spaces With our busy schedules, it is often difficult to find the time and energy to put towards our living spaces.
A
ward-winning interior designer Angelique Armstrong from Armstrong Interiors says there are several simple yet effective ways to enhance your existing space and it’s not as hard as you may think. “Decluttering the house is the best way to start home enhancement,” she says. “Old paperwork, socks with holes, restaurant menus, school paperwork and outdated magazines are just a few things that can go into the bin. “Focus on areas in your home that need to flow; passageways, around furniture, doors and windows.” Enabling these spaces to ‘breathe’ creates what Angelique likes to call ‘energy flow’ within your interiors. “It’s not everyone’s terminology, but it’s one that for me is important for people to understand.” Angelique’s pro tip: Set a timer for one
hour. Choose one space to clear. Soon you will find yourself in a clear and open environment with the space for new ideas to flourish. For Angelique, visualising the space and planning how it will function is the most exciting part of the design. “When I walk into a room, I look for areas that will enhance the space. Which wall best suits the position of your TV? Where is the furniture layout best sitting? Do you have enough wall space? Too many windows and doors? Which wall best suits the bed to sit on? “Your home must function as your family needs it to.” When it comes to form, timber is warm to walk on and very rarely requires underfloor heating. “One thing that is very popular in Europe is multi-widths of
flooring boards randomly laid. I love this look, especially with a natural oak finish and I prefer to have all my boards oiled naturally. “Forêt is my preferred supplier for timber flooring and Director Alan Stuck’s family history of timber knowledge has put this company’s designs on the world stage. His use of reclaimed timber and getting back to the ‘real deal’ with flooring designs sets him apart.” There is a wide selection of carpets available and she’s seeing a move away from dark colours and back into neutrals, particularly soft greys and caramels/beiges. “They’re all very natural and fit well with our climate and interior pallets. Our carpet manufactures are always up with the latest colours and trends to keep designers and homeowners happy.”

uilding your new lifestyle has never been easier when engaging premier architectural building firm David Magill Builders. The name has been a fixture in the residential Canterbury and South Island market for more than 35 years, and continues to thrive in an ever-challenging industry. It is one thing to be skilled at building well-designed homes, but to be the go-to architectural builders in Christchurch takes a talented team of experienced and knowledgeable builders. “We are seeing the market continue to change, with a move away from the quarter-acre family plot to more lifestyle-driven living that offers individuality and easy care, yet still demands the welcoming feel of a traditional home,” says Director Craig Freeman. “Finding the balance of modern architecture and functional design with any family home takes years of knowledge and expertise – and that’s where we know how to get it right 100 percent.” Elegant and architecturally designed homes do not need to be created at the cost of everyday function and practicability. Building your home is all about having a home that works with your lifestyle. “If a build design happens to be outside the norm, it doesn’t have to be uncomfortable to live in. We love problem solving, and we are always excited to work with complex, intelligent technical builds, even those on the hill,” he says. Not being a one-size-fits- all company, nor a volume builder, each architecturally designed home is an extremely personal experience. Every element of the design is planned in-depth to create the highest quality finish possible, not forgetting the finer touches. “What many of our clients say about working alongside us is that we take the time to listen; we produce homes with well thought-
out designs and grow real transparent relationships with them. It is so much more than just securing your job – its validating daily why you have made the right decision in choosing award-winning David Magill for your build,” Craig says. “We take ownership of the process from start to completion!” Often the building experience can be uncertain, complex, frustrating, risky and downright overwhelming for some people. “We ensure the build experience and your experience with us is a safe and comfortable experience,” he says. No matter the scope of the build, all homes built with David Magill are given the same care and attention to detail. “We can build from concept plans but also have a range of design choices available as a starting point if required,” says Craig, “Our eight-step process assures that every home is finished to the highest standard, on time and within budget. We are always looking for the latest in technological advancements and product choices that benefit and add value. Being a member of the Registered Master Builders Federation is a further guarantee of our authenticity as a company you would want to do business with.” The ‘extended family’ network includes real estate agents, architects, engineers, surveyors, subtrades and suppliers who align with the same values-driven approach. An inhouse Quantity Surveyor to number crunch ensures clients get the best value for money. Why should you do business with David Magill Builders? “We solve problems successfully; our professionalism, credibility and expertise enable us to find solutions that everyone is happy with.” To view a spectrum of beautifully crafted homes that have catered to the site’s characteristics and everyone’s unique desires, visit www.davidmagill.co.nz.

hen I first started out in this industry more than 20 years ago, I’m sure I would have thought that creative skills alone held the key to great design. In fact, as I’ve discovered, it invariably evolves out of building good relationships with clients; spending time with them onsite and getting to know their lifestyle and aspirations. You really can’t do that effectively without also sharing something of yourself along the way. Equally, good open communication is fundamental to building a healthy, friendly work environment. Once barriers start coming down between people, the relationships that form are generally very positive and productive.

Those with an interest in craft beer might be interested in the ‘brew day’ feature of the afternoon as I experiment with a new batch, and there may be an opportunity to sample some of my other home brew too! During our Open Studio, you will find all of the Allfrey + South team are happy to share perspectives on architectural trends and innovations, as well as interests outside the office. Our website has been running some interesting stories from staff this year with blogs on a variety of topics from furniture restoration and small apartment living to travel experiences. It has made me appreciate what a diverse group we are, with many different outlooks and hobbies. While we are all employed in the same architecture sphere, we bring a range of experiences and talents to the practice. All of this feeds back into an exceptional service for our clients, focused on celebrating their uniqueness in turn so as to create truly bespoke homes. Meanwhile, I’m sure there will be many more updates to come on Murphy, who is still only at the start of his very own journey towards becoming a fully-grown dog! As barrier busters go, my family’s Newfoundland puppy, Murphy, is proving a real champ. I’ve recently started bringing him into the studio with me. What a great experience it has been for everyone – so far, at least! Studies suggest that pets in the workplace are fantastic at relieving stress and encouraging social interaction. Dogs have been a fixture at Amazon for many years now and I can see why; having Murphy around the office encourages the team to take breaks away from their desks and lifts the overall mood. Of course, he’s a distraction to an extent, but a happy one and I think ultimately, we will all benefit. I’m impressed at how chilled and relaxed Murphy is, both at home with my three daughters – aged 15, 13 and 10 – and in the studio, his calm nature seems to rub off on everyone that meets him. The plan is to have Murphy in the studio three days a week and, until he’s fully trained, he will spend most of his time hanging out in the office courtyard awaiting cuddles and pats. I’ve yet to meet anyone who can resist his ineffable ‘Newfie’ charm. He will also be joining us at Allfrey + South’s Open Studio session later this month (29 November). This is an informal opportunity to drop by, ask a few questions and get to know us all a

hile running his own business since 2006, Nathan built two homes for the Jennian Homes Southland franchise owners, who then offered him the opportunity to franchise for the Wanaka area, which hadn’t yet had a locally owned and operated Jennian presence. Nathan took over Jennian Homes Wanaka mid-year and, while aligning with the company’s values and standards of excellence, he is stamping his own creative mark. Previously focusing on top-end bespoke architectural new builds, he strives to incorporate architectural flair into family-living. “I’m currently working on the Wanaka Alpine series, which is a range of three designs, specifically created to suit the smaller Wanaka sites, which are typically 400-500sqm sections. It’s about finding the right design to suit the section, while still including everything
on the homeowner’s wish list and keeping within their budget.” With an extensive choice of Jennian ‘Proven Plans’ and ‘Ready Range’ to choose from, or the option for a design and build from scratch to fit the section, Nathan works closely with clients throughout the entire process. As both the Managing Director and Project Manager, the depth of experience and knowledge he gained while running his own business has proven invaluable. With the assistance of home consultant Abi Casey, Nathan takes the time to find out his client’s needs and wants, planning every step of the journey with them. “Clients like the fact they are dealing with the owner/operator right from the very first consultation to the home’s completion, as it provides more of a personal touch and there’s also that next level of trust and peace of mind for them.”

DESERT DIAMOND Not too long ago, this gorgeous mellow-toned room would likely have been
awash in millennial pinks, but there’s a subtle shift away from that side of the spectrum into the trendy tones of peaches and nudes.
W
hy use just one peach or nude tone when you can use a few by way of this striking diamond feature wall? Such a dramatic shape can fall into the trap of becoming a bit overwhelming to the eye, however, painted in desert or sunset tones from Resene, this feature wall creates a beautiful and modern backdrop. To balance out the oversized pattern, a tonal colour scheme keeps it soft and pretty, using sandy, dusky peaches and pinks to create a grown-up look that’s soft but not effeminate. While shape trends are shifting from strict geometrics to more organic shapes, by using a tonal colour scheme, this pattern avoids being jarring and too contrasting. It’s also much easier to achieve as opposed to more free-form shapes – just mask with tape and get painting! The scheme is further softened by adding plenty of natural textures to the room, from fringed cushions to macramé wall hangings. Finish off by painting flooring and furniture in natural tones, such as Resene Umber White (floor) and Resene Bone (coffee table). Other colours to try with sunset shades could be smoky teals, faded blacks and leather browns.
Top Tip: Keep busy geometric designs to one wall only, and make sure to use the same complementary shades throughout the space. That way the wall will be integrated into the whole room, rather than being jarring or overwhelming. Incorporate it into the room as you would showcase a piece of art.

Since taking over the shop, Melody has reduced imported suppliers by 70-80 percent and enjoys inspiring and educating her clients. “It’s a no-brainer,” she says of the shop’s concept. “It makes sense to have the purchasing dollar in New Zealand, rather than overseas.” Phone 03 389 9242 or visit www.facebook.com/ theflockdesignboutique.

ow you can get the island resort feeling in your home year-round; rattan has returned to our Pinterest boards and our homes. Most often, this type of furniture was confined to porches and outdoor areas and only enjoyed on warmer evenings. This was likely due to it being great weather-resistant furniture. But in order to get more bang for your buck and enjoy your rattan yearround, it may be time to let the outdoors in. Rattan’s most desirable qualities are that it’s strong and lightweight, making it the perfect option for seating arrangements. This could be in the form of dining chairs, barstools or even a daybed tucked away in a nook. To channel that island-living feel, a hanging rattan chair is ideal.

Rattan is weaving its way into our homeware dreams – and with the wicker of a finger, the dream becomes a reality.

DEMONSTRATOR & PRE-OWNED
By Nicholas Henare
Kia Motors has revealed its new Futuron Concept, an illuminating all-wheel drive SUV coupe which proposes new designs for future electric vehicles.
RING & REACH
he Futuron Concept represents the modern and confident image of a progressive electric SUV coupe envisioned by Kia. The Futuron name itself is a portmanteau of ‘future’ and ‘on’, hinting at the switched-on, electric nature of future SUV designs from the brand. Electric vehicles are the future, yes, but the way we use the technology and how that will interface with individuals will be the key. The Futuron’s design leads us one step further towards science-future becoming science-fact. Autonomous driving is coming and with New Zealand bringing 5G soon, it’s closer than we think. The Kia Futuron is very much a reality that all large companies currently have in development as they look forward to the autonomous platform. Hardware and software in vehicles is constantly adapting, resulting in a tsunami of innovation. It’s not only that one step closer to the future of design, it would be fantastic to drive and looks hot, don’t you think? With a design based around the notion of dynamic purity, the Futuron concept merges elegant proportions with pure shapes and surfaces. Its lightweight SUV coupe body incorporates a fully electric all-wheel drive powertrain, wrapped in bold yet modern exterior surfaces, and with a flexible, hightech interior. It’s the perfect base for an autonomous future and one that I would personally love to own.

he S660 is the spiritual successor to Honda’s Beat Kei Car from the nineties. Plus, it also nods to the original tiny Honda sports cars of the sixties. The S660 was built for Japanese motorists to take advantage of Japanese tax and insurance benefits, providing the engine is no bigger than 660cc. Kei Cars are seldom imported into New Zealand officially, but this S660 was imported by Honda New Zealand. Time to get stuck in. At 3395mm long, 1475mm wide and 1180mm high, the S660 makes Honda’s old CRZ look like a new NSX by comparison. Pop the bonnet and you’ll find a mid-mounted, turbocharged, 660cc three-cylinder engine with – wait for it – 47kW/104Nm. Mated to a seven-speed CVT auto, you can also spec a manual, which is nice. You really have to fold yourself into the S660 and once you are snug inside, you quickly realise taller and more rotund drivers may struggle getting in or out. The S660 weighs in at 830kg. Zero to 100km/h takes 11 seconds and the top speed? 140km/h. Yes, you read that right. The S660 comes with a removable fabric targa-style roof. Simply undo the clips on either side and you just roll it up and stow it away in a small compartment in the boot. Oh, and that
small compartment is the full extent of the S660’s cargo carrying capabilities. Inside you have airbags, keyless entry, air-con, cruise control, electric windows, a FM/AM Radio, USB ports and that’s it. The S660 is just the essence of a car, and we loved it. Press start and the S660 sounds mechanical, and after each individual rev at idle, you can hear each of those three plucky tiny cylinders firing. Dive right down a side street and the S660 changes direction like a fly. The steering responsiveness is almost psychic, almost as if the car knows where you want to go before you do. Leave town and the S660 really isn’t suited to copious amounts of motorway miles. A strong side wind
means you are constantly fighting to keep it straight, due to the lack of weight. There is plenty of buffeting at speed too. However, things change when the going gets twisty. Selecting sport mode only heightens the revs but it means you can carry maximum power through every bend. Just keep it planted, use all of those mighty 47kW, and you corner like a cat on shag pile carpet, grinning from ear to ear. Despite no plans for Honda New Zealand to introduce the S660 Kei Car to the New Zealand market, it’s great to know that cars like this exist. Plus, driving the Honda S660 will, at some point, leave you in stitches.
