In a state of evolution, the Garden City’s architectural typology is nothing short of distinct. New building facades are playing with eye catching angles, colours and materials – a welcome digression from the archetypal concrete and stone buildings previously adopted in the city, as we usher in a new era of urban architecture.

The Karen Walker brand has long been committed to prioritising transparency, sustainability and ethical practices over profits. How important are these areas to you? How you make your product is at the top of the agenda for any leading brand and will continue to be so.
What do you think are the most important areas businesses should be looking at when it comes to ethical business practice? I think the most important thing is to ask yourself whether people really need the thing you’re making or the service you’re providing. Really consider every product you’re making before you make it and be sure it has a purpose and there’s a need for it. For us, with this collaboration, we took the idea of utility denim pieces down to their very essence. What does the core of a utility workwear wardrobe look like and it turns out it’s one jacket, two jeans, a skirt, a t-shirt and a tote bag. At the other end of the spectrum, our Atelier service makes a product only when people actually need it so it’s sparse in the extreme. And then, in the middle, with our ready-to-wear, we’re making about a third of the styles we were five years ago and bringing the collections down to their very core. We believe less truly is better.
Have you noticed change happening in this space? Yes, I think people understand the urgency now more than they did five or 10 years ago. How did the Outland capsule collaboration come about? Mutual admiration and a shared desire to make beautiful, well-considered and needed things.
How did the design process behind this collaboration work, and what did Outland and Karen Walker each bring to the table? We brought our unique design and Outland Denim brought their unique way of producing. Why is this collaboration so important to you? Collaborations are a way for brands to learn from one another. In this particular case Outland Denim’s Cambodian production team have learnt new skills required for the specific elements in our designs and we’ve learnt about new ways to approach the production of denim. Manufacturing of denim clothing has been very problematic for some time and Outland are on a journey to reinvent it and solve those issues that have been so intrinsic. What was the inspiration behind the collection? We wanted to create a family of garments that felt engineered and focused on structure and functionality.

Introducing Kyla Strahl Kyla our Canadian has been with our team since 2015, let’s find out what makes her love working at House of Travel Christchurch City…
What tips do you have for travelling for a winter holiday? For winter travel, I would suggest that you pack some good quality “Long Johns” or thermals as kiwis call them, as well as nice wool socks and good quality boots. A mulled wine or hot toddy won’t go amiss either! What is on your bucket list for 2020? In 2020 I have planned a beautiful family holiday to South Africa. We will be hiring a car and driving the Garden Route from Capetown to Knysna and a Safari in Addo Elephant Park. The diversity of culture, the wildlife, the food and the beautiful beaches are what continually draw us back to South Africa. If I could squeeze in another holiday, I would love to explore Japan!
on my travels are the beautiful islands of Corsica and Sardinia. Once I got the travel bug out of my system, the opportunity to work with the lovely team at House of Travel Christchurch City presented itself, and I felt it was time to begin a new chapter. What do you love about your job? Working with the team at House of Travel Christchurch City has been a great experience. I am so proud to say I work with such a hardworking, kind and fun group of people. Recently winning a number of awards at the National Travel Industry Awards is such a tribute to how well we work together. The diversity of travel that we organise from groups and events to sports teams and personal holidays, means that no day is the same, but the end goal is to ensure that all our clients have an experience of a lifetime. Being able to share my own personal travel experiences to enhance my client’s travel is a great honour.
How did you get into travel? As a child growing up in Canada I always imagined living somewhere warm and tropical. I was very lucky to travel throughout Europe, Canada, USA, Australia and New Zealand - so when it came to choosing a career I knew it needed to be something where travel was involved! I crewed on luxury yachts as a chef for the better part of 6 years. This took me all over the world from the quintessential Mediterranean Sea, up to the Baltics, exploring wonderfully unique islands in the North Atlantic, the Norwegian fiords, over through the beautiful island nations of the Caribbean and of course the Pacific. My absolute favourite place I have discovered

Perfectly groomed slopes and superb tuition for all abilities, Canada’s ski scene is first-rate. With impressive ski in, ski out accommodation and slope-side chalets, resorts excel at accommodating families. The entertainment is vast and diverse, from groomers to beginner slopes, sleigh rides and sledding, every snow-style is satisfied.
From California, Wyoming, Utah to Colorado, skiing and boarding in the USA is really like living the American dream. Views over lakes, cowboy ranches, and mining towns, huge terrain, tree runs, powder stashes, jaw-dropping couloirs, celebrity havens, and casinos sum up a little of what skiing and boarding is about in the USA.
While the Europeans have their addictive après ski scene, the Japanese boast natural hot springs arguably the best way to soothe ski aches. Resorts offer an authentic Japanese experience as well as family-friendly accommodation and English-speaking staff. Powder wise, Japanese snow is often referred to as JAPOW, because it’s light, dry, and plentiful.

A charitable dinner By Nicholas Henare
On Friday 18 October, The Tannery and Cassels Brewery hosted a black tie evening of legance to support the Pathway Trust. To help ensure the success of the recent dinner, Alasdair Cassels provided his beautiful venue, The Tannery, at no charge and purchased a table of ten for the dinner to provide direct financial support.
W
ith Chris Bond as MC, Phil McGoldrick as auctioneer and Duncan Garner as guest speaker, the night was filled with friends and the knowledge that we were supporting a worthy cause. Pathway Trust is a not-for-profit that has been enabling fresh starts for people in the Canterbury region for over 20 years. Throughout the past two decades, the social services and work of the trust has diversified and today it is most recognised for its prison reintegration services, journeying alongside men at Christchurch Men’s Prison to create possibilities for
a fresh start. A dedicated team of social workers are embedded in programmes delivered both within the prison system and out in the community, providing relational education, employment preparation, literacy and numeracy education, and practical tradebased skills development. Notably, independent research has reported that released men who participated in Pathway’s reintegration programme were 43 percent less likely to return to prison after 12 months of release. The trust continues to strive towards unlocking the potential and creating possibilities for
people who are looking for a fresh start and ready to make a change. Every year Pathway supports more than 100 people on their own journey, providing the tools and resources to enable a safe, happy, positive and healthy life. “Our biennial major fundraising event is always a wonderful evening for us to reflect on how far the organisation has come, but more-so recognise the impact our team continues to make on the lives of so many people,” founding member and CEO of Pathway Charitable Group Murray Kennedy says. “We simply couldn’t do this
work without the funding and support we receive. A huge thanks to everyone who made our special event such a great success.” The Cassels table at which I was a guest consisted of Nick Inkster from OGB, Chris and Helen Ashton from Platinum Homes, Hardeep and Sonia Singh from Super Liquor, Jeremy and Emma Stevens from Aikmans, Andy Gutschlag from Fresh Choice Merivale and Michael Bayly from Cassels, all attending as guests for Alasdair Cassels. Alasdair Cassels’ support for Pathways reflects the values he was raised with as part of a strong Presbyterian household. His father had studied to be a minister and instilled in his children a sense of service to others and a belief in the power of redemption. Alasdair puts those beliefs into practice, with the successful businessman lending his support to Pathways, an organisation that assists in the journey to redemption for those who have served their sentence and need assistance to rejoin the community. A day in the life of a vet nurse
The role of a Veterinary Nurse is a varied one which includes (but is not limited to) receptionist, lab technician, nutritionist, anaesthetist, kennel hand, grief counsellor and pharmacy assistant. To celebrate Veterinary Nurse Appreciation Week in October, we caught up with some of Ourvets’ most important team members, the Veterinary Nurses, to get an insight into how an average day looks.

need immediate attention on arrival. As patients start arriving for the day’s surgery, we talk with owners about their pets’ procedures and answer any questions they may have. We then fully examine their pet and take blood tests to make sure vital organs are functioning as they should be. If all is well, we work out an anaesthetic plan that is tailored to the individual pet’s needs. Next, we set up and check the anaesthetic equipment and gather the medications for the procedure. Lots of hugs and reassurance are required whilst we gain IV access prior to the procedure. Once smoothly asleep, we keep them snuggly warm and comfortable during their procedure. We constantly monitor how they are doing under the anaesthetic by taking their vital readings and adjusting the anaesthetic accordingly. On recovery, we stay with your pet and reassure them until they are fully awake and happy. Once recovered, we will give you a call to let you know how your pet is doing, answer any questions you may have and arrange a time to go over discharge instructions. During the day, we help the vet with a variety of tasks: we medicate animals, prepare medications, toilet animals, then clean, clean, and clean some more! We answer phone calls, console owners and are there when vets, clients and pets need us. While no two days are ever the same, we love our jobs as veterinary nurses!” For more information on Ourvets, visit www.ourvets.co.nz or www.facebook.com/ourvets. christchurch.

Shaping child development and early learning The Cathedral Grammar Pre-School is an inner-city, family-orientated, community-based education centre for boys and girls, located in the grounds of The Cathedral Grammar School’s central city campus.
H
ead of Pre-School Lyndell Turner leads a team of caring early childhood teachers who possess a deep understanding of how young children learn. “Teachers are responsive to individual interests, strengths
and abilities. They listen closely to children, support them to develop oral language skills and share their ideas. “Our Pre-School philosophy values play as instrumental in stimulating and shaping child development and early
learning. Through planned and spontaneous play experiences, children form relationships, share, cooperate, develop selfregulation, they learn to test ideas and develop friendships, extend their range of experience through reciprocal
relationships with people, places and things.” “Our programme intentionally balances times of childcentred and adult-led play, plus we value extended blocks of uninterrupted time for children to make discoveries, to elaborate on projects, and to be involved in deep meaningful play,” Lyndell says. The Pre-School children are fortunate to be located on the grounds of The Cathedral Grammar School. This means access to numerous activities and resources such as specialist art, music and physical education teachers which add value to an already strong and varied programme. ECE hours available. For more information and Centre tours, please contact Lydia Hemingway (Registrar, The Cathedral Grammar School) on 03 365 0385 or email inquiries to hemingwayl@ cathedralgrammar.school.nz.

A Christchurch Instagram star has just launched her e-book on how to become a successful social media influencer.
N
ikita Rindel has clocked up an impressive number of followers in her Instagram page ‘Nikitahhx’ – the ‘hhx’ standing for ‘hug, hug, kiss!’ Today she’s the oracle on everything to do with making up beautiful eyes. It all started five years ago with Instagram, where she has now reached 303,000 followers, with an additional 76,000 on YouTube over the last three years. Her e-book is titled How to become a successful influencer – the good, the bad, and the things no one tells you. It is
a generic, inspiring practical guide for all types of influencers. It explains in simple steps how to create a platform, get a following, the importance of ‘hanging out’ with other influencers, how to collaborate with brands – and, of course, amazing tips. “At high school, an influencer wasn’t yet a thing, so there was no one to help me; I just had to find my way,” Nikita says. “That’s why I wanted to help others. I’m always there to answer questions and dispel myths, such as the one about

how great brushes do all the hard work. A lot of planning goes into her presentations and explaining ‘why’, rather than just demonstrating, is part of her success. Although her statistics are impressive, she says content is now more important than ever before. It’s no longer just about the number of followers, especially since Instagram have now removed the visible ‘likes’. Nikita has been approached by around 20 international brands such as Maybelline. “It’s really important to have good rapport with the suppliers; most of mine have approached me, rather than the other way around, which can be a lot more challenging.” Nikita has settled down and bought a house in Casebrook with her husband Brett. “I absolutely love Christchurch,” she says. She works up to 12 hours a day and loves every second. “I especially enjoy helping people, and having lots of followers is just a bonus really. “I don’t often get people recognising me on the streets of Christchurch – but when they do they’ll always get a big hug from me! You just need a passion for what you do.” The 25-year-old emigrated from South Africa as a 13-yearold. Her big brown eyes – genes inherited from her Italian grandfather – make the perfect canvas to showcase her tutorials. Why eyes? “They are the first thing that people look at. It all started when I got out my camera out for a closeup demonstration shot of my favourite brand I’d been following – with Anastasia Beverley Hills Dip-brow Promade. It came out really well!” Nikita creates her tutorials from her couch using a Canon EOS 650D, just a metre away on a tripod. “It’s sometimes hard to keep a steady hand,” she says. “But everything can be edited to become perfect. You don’t have to be tech savvy at all. Although, Brett works in IT. That has helped!” And to reverse roles, he recently featured in a tutorial as her makeup artist! n 15 October, when Zonta Z-Club celebrated its 25th birthday at Avonside Girls High School (AGHS) with Zonta’s Governor, Souella Cumming, affiliated Zonta Christchurch branches and various charities in attendance, it was clear that Z-Club has become a leader itself. For 18 years it was the only Z-Club in New Zealand. Now, thanks to all the inspirational things achieved by AGHS Z-Club, New
maintaining fundraising efforts and helping others in need. The list of charities that Z-Club AGHS has supported speaks for itself: Cholmondoley Children’s Home; EB Charity; All Star Kids - Holiday Program; Canteen; Camp Quality, and this year’s chosen charity, Goodnight Sleep Tight. Another charity they’ve had a long and ongoing association with is Ronald McDonald House South Island (RMHSI), of which the Z-Club AGHS bacon and egg pies are legend. However it is The Mural, on the corner of Linwood Avenue and Aldwins Road, that’s been, to date, their most epic fundraiser for RMHSI – it raised $6,000, which was donated to the charity to buy new ovens. Phillippa’s closing words at the 25th celebration encapsulate best what its members have brought, and will continue to bring, to our community in the years ahead: “To be able to help children and families, to give a smile, to offer hope and love is a wonderful thing. “Making cupcakes; running bake sales; waitressing at Zonta events; cutting dress patterns for a girl on the other side of the world; chocolate raffles; car washes; toy, book or blanket collections, or weekly rest home visits to the dementia care unit… it is a privilege to be in a position to help others. I thank the school deeply for allowing a Z-Club at your school to help so many lives. Keep up the wonderful work you all do.”

Zealand has eight Z-Clubs (formed on secondary school campuses or in communities) and Golden Z-Clubs (formed on college and university campuses). These student clubs are designed to provide opportunities for young adults to develop communication and leadership skills, explore career alternatives, and increase their international awareness and understanding through service. “I think things like this can slip by, as we take for granted what people do for others,” Phillippa Jacobs says of the importance of acknowledging the work done by Z-Club AGHS. She’s the Area 3 Director for Zonta, member of the Z and Golden Z Club International Committee, and chair of the Z-Club AGHS for 11 of the 13 years she’s been in Zonta. “Awesome teenagers and young adults often go unnoticed when doing kind, caring things for others.” It’s estimated that around 700 girls have passed through Z-Club AGHS – an impressive number that undoubtedly has been built from the continuous support from people such as AGHS Principal Sue Hume and AGHS teacher representative of 25 years, Anna McNeil, as well as Zonta Committee and past Z-Club members. Like many teens in east Christchurch disrupted by the quakes, AGHS pupils were dislocated from their schools and normal school routines, but the girls of Z-Club AGHS found a sense of purpose by

Painting with watercolours
‘A Brush with Spring’ opens Wednesday 13 November, 7pm at McAtamney Gallery. The exhibition features rhododendrons and other flowers, exquisitely captured by internationally acclaimed watercolourist Richard Bolton. Opening night also affords the opportunity to meet the artist.

ainting and drawing started early on for Richard. A tin of paints and a sketch pad always went into the back of the car when his parents ventured
abroad. Every stop had to be painted. His interest carried on through to art school. Initially Richard worked as an

illustrator for seven years, mainly drawing black and white illustrations with pencil and ink. It was only in the weekends that Richard was able to get out his paints and paintbrush and work with watercolours. He credits artist John Singer Sargent and his book Watercolours as being instrumental in igniting what was to become a lifelong passion for painting in the medium – a medium that Richard admits is not the easiest to work with. “Painting with watercolours is like risking your arm; every painting can be a bit of a gamble. Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn’t. Unlike oils or acrylics, you can’t really control watercolours… it’s a bit like trying to train cats!” This somewhat humble self-appraisal of his work belies the enormous success of the artist, whose paintings have achieved sell-out exhibitions in Europe, and of the author, whose writing on painting has brought book commissions from British, American and Chinese publishers. Richard says his paintings can’t be buttonholed as to subject or theme. “It’s whatever grabs me at the time. I like to find something unusual – something that gives a different angle.” Many of Richard’s earlier paintings depict the gentle, bucolic scenery of where he lived at the time, near the Ouse River in Cambridgeshire, but with the relocation to South Canterbury’s Geraldine with his New Zealand-born wife in 2003, Richard’s watercolours began to reflect our wild and craggy Aotearoa. “Painting with watercolours is an adrenalin rush. If you screw up, it can be frustrating. But it’s amazing to be able to do what you love.” ‘A Brush with Spring’ exhibition will be at McAtamney Gallery and Design Store, 40A Talbot Street, Geraldine (new location opposite Village Inn). You were down our way for Frenchfest recently. How does it feel to get back to your hometown of Christchurch when you can? I forgot just how much of a jewel Akaroa is as it’d been quite some time since I’d ventured into the depths of Banks Peninsula. The French-styled Airbnb was crazy cool and delightful, complete with complementary buttery croissants and champagne! The gig was off the hook and I met some good old friends for brekky the day after with dad, so it became a really special weekend. It was also really reassuring and heart-warming seeing the wairua make its way back into the central city of Christchurch. Beautiful buildings are one thing but they are nothing without the people. What is the most fulfilling part of what you get to do? The most fulfilling thing is seeing and hearing people enjoy themselves, whether that be clapping in or out of time, dancing to slow previously undanced-to tunes, or singing full out in the chorus or instrumental parts of a song. Seeing people entertained is the juice, especially if they’re feeling free enough to let loose and get involved in the abandonment for a little bit. How did you get your first break? Depends how you see it really; I jumped on stage for kapa haka at the Newfield Tavern in Invercargill when I was about nine. But played my first tunes on stage with the St Bedes rock band called VIVID at the Woolston Working Men’s Club for three songs, we were about 14. We felt like rockstars!
Your music has gone platinum nine times, you’ve won nine New Zealand Music Awards, an APRA Silver Scroll Award for Song of the Year and were made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for Services to Music in 2011. What do you consider to be some of your career-defining moments? Those ones are pretty cool, but I think the most enduring difference I feel I got to make with music was when I helped lead a great team of people to create an earthquake relief concert called ‘Band Together for Canterbury’ on 23 October just six weeks after the first earthquake in 2010. We managed to convince 30+ iconic NZ acts to perform, TV3 to simulcast the event, and a reported 100,000 people attended. Cantabrians had been through massive disruptions and stress. Seeing people lose themselves in the music for the day was very rewarding and it was truly an honour to be of service in that way and I was overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone who made the day work. Since Opshop’s hiatus in 2013, you’ve been paving your own way. How does a day in the life of Jason Kerrison look these days? Well, I would walk you through my day today but it’s been particularly uneventful. I broke the little toe on my left foot two evenings ago, finally had x-rays this morning (which confirmed a nasty break) and have subsequently been ordered to stay still all day on the couch. I’m getting better at practising stillness, like Eckhart Tolle stillness, but I’m not great at keeping still for long. The day prior to the break I spent the afternoon on the hemp farm liming the paddocks in preparation for planting and in the morning at my NorthTech carpentry course. I sat down to prepare some music for my upcoming shows and stubbed my toe on the stupid couch with the toe poking 90 degrees the wrong way. That being, said I’ve got a single out at the moment called I Will If You Will. I wrote the song in my studio in the far north of New Zealand. It’s been quite some time since I wrote a deliberately electronic-sounding piece weaved with the foundation of a good old song. I Will If You Will is about daring the best of each other as people, especially in a relationship. I also wanted to write an uplifting fun track for big speakers. It’s intended to be fun, a little tongue-incheek too. It’s on all streaming platforms now and a lyric video is due early November.

How is the tour going? It’s been really fun getting out in front of a public audience again. Nelson was the first show at The Boatshed – what a great venue and staff. The audience was lovely and really engaged; much like the Akaroa crowd they quite like jumping up on the stage and becoming part of the show. Some sang, played my guitar while I sang, danced, stage dived. It was very entertaining for me! We are booking more shows as demanded!

Play LEARNING AS MEANINGFUL
The brilliant sunshine yellow of the Playcentre Shop is symbolic of the joy that lies within. The little building is bursting with top quality toys chosen to promote learning through play. The not-for-profit enterprise supports Playcentres but is open to absolutely everyone who values play as meaningful learning.
N
aturalist and poet Diane Ackerman said, “Play is our brain’s favourite way of learning”, and Playcentre’s independent toy shop team Megan and Jessamy search far and wide to ensure there is always something
new and different in store. “We avoid licenced products, concentrating on wooden toys and, when needed, good quality plastic. In choosing the toys and games we prefer to go for items in genderneutral colours where we can,” Megan says. The versatile nature of the shop means it caters to children with different learning needs and the staff can point people in the right direction, “although we learn from our lovely customers all the time too,” Jessamy says. They’ll happily bring in an item of specific interest for a particular customer. A recent example being jigsaw puzzles featuring sharks. It is a great place for children to learn about shopping. “We are child-friendly and find our smaller customers don’t want to leave,” Megan says. There is ample parking at the door and ramp access to this happy haven of play.

Celebrating a loved one’s life We live in a world where our individuality matters and our end of life celebrations have followed suit. Funerals have evolved from formulaic, one-size-fits-all farewells, to an authentic celebration of a loved one’s life – their passions and hobbies, treasured pets and favourite places, sense of style, musical tastes and sense of humour included.
W
e talked to Tony Garing, Manager of John Rhind Funeral Directors, about how modern funerals are bespoke to the life of the person being farewelled. Tony, what is the biggest change you have seen take place in funeral services? We find overall that there is less formality in the service. Traditional rituals are less likely to be followed although, of course, there is always a place for formality and ritual.
More usually now we celebrate the life lived in a family-centred and personalised way. This can mean funerals are a little longer, incorporating music, video clips and tributes of all kinds. Where does the team find itself conducting modern funeral services? Generally, funerals have rather moved away from church services but then, many families still have a close association with a church.
It is, of course, completely a family choice. We offer our chapel and award-winning gardens, as well as our Harewood and Canterbury Crematorium Chapels and beautiful gardens, and we are very happy to travel to other outdoor and indoor venues at the request of the family. A casket and transport are still essentials, how do you meet the style and taste of the departed and their family? There is a wonderful array of coffin and casket styles available now. We can offer some beautiful woollen and wicker caskets, eco-friendly options without nails or screws, solid timber and beautiful veneers, painted and themed. The sheer range available means that anyone interested in planning their funeral would probably like to have a look. The same goes for our range of hearses; you can choose from modern imported hearses, New Zealand-built vehicles and even our brand new Jaguar hearses. People can discuss all options with our team at any time and we will help them put together something beautiful and bespoke.

Quiz for a good cause
The ‘Dark Destroyer’ Shaun Wallace is heading to the city this month and it’s all for a good cause – or several good causes in fact.
A
fter a chance encounter with Diabetes Christchurch Manager Lynne Taylor at his book launch earlier this year, Wallace agreed to attend the Diabetes Christchurch event for free. Five Christchurch charities (including Diabetes Christchurch) will be involved in the quiz night on Wednesday 20 November. Each charity will be paired up with a local celebrity through a secret ballot system and the celebrities will compete against each other for the final victory. Wallace has been a champion of the long running BBC general knowledge quiz Mastermind, a finalist on the first series of Are You an Egghead?, a
contestant on Fifteen to One and The Weakest Link, plus the British adaptation of Greed. He’s been a celebrity contestant on Catchphrase and appeared as a guest in ‘Dictionary Corner’ on the Channel 4 gameshow Countdown. Since 2009, he has been a ‘chaser’ on the UK television series The Chase. But to change things up from his usual ‘chasing’, Wallace – along with popular local musician Tim Beveridge – will be the one posing the questions to the well-known local celebrities at the Shaun Wallace Celebrity Charity Quiz Show. Former Mayor Sir Bob Parker, Brett and Angel from ‘Married at First Sight – NZ’ and Metropol’s very own
Editor, Melinda Collins, are some of the locals who will be vying for a win for the range of charities, which include The Christchurch Kidney Society, The Bone Marrow Cancer Trust and Age Concern Canterbury. The proceeds made from the quiz will go to Diabetes Christchurch and the prize money to the winning charity. The Shaun Wallace Celebrity Charity Quiz Show will be held at the La Vida Conference Centre, 34A Hansons Lane, Upper Riccarton. Book now by calling 0800 224 224 or online at www. ticketdirect.co.nz. New Zealand’s first purposebuilt ‘one-stop-shop’ for youth health and wellbeing is one step closer to reality, with finalised plans soon heading to the Christchurch City Council for resource consent.
outh Hub Trust Chair Dame Sue Bagshaw hopes both the council and local community will recognise the detail, careful thought and collaboration which has underlined the project so far. “It’s been a year of really hard work to get to this stage,” she says. “Field Studio of Architecture, Novo Group town planners and the wider team have delivered a vision for a fantastic space, to support both youth service providers and the city’s young people in need, who’ll truly benefit from care given in such a therapeutic environment. We hope to be able to create a real sense of community for the site.” Once built, the Youth Hub on inner-city Salisbury Street will provide medical, mental health, social services, activity spaces, a café and supported transitional accommodation for 23 young people. Dr Bagshaw says it will deliver a round-theclock, supervised, holistic environment, delivering much-needed support to young people motivated to overcome their difficulties, get well and improve their lives. She says Christchurch youth, who were purposefully included in the design process, requested a ‘sanctuary-like and homely’ atmosphere for the accommodation spaces in particular. During the day, doctors, counsellors, social workers and reception staff will also be on-site while at night, two experienced youth social workers will be on-site providing professional 24hour supervision. “Young people will be kept busy, engaged and focused on their care and recovery in a safe, holistic space.”

After more than a month of fashion shows from the very best, there’s a whole crop of fresh spring/summer nail trends emerging for minimalists and maximalists alike.
exture is the name of the game this year; add oomph with polka dots, geometric patterns, rhinestone applique and glitter, or channel your inner mermaid with cute embellishments such as pearls or tiny shells. High-shine varnishes with a shimmery, metallic finish are perfect for the festive party season, particularly in silver, gold and chrome hues. Warmer weather means brighter colours, so why not experiment with a pop of on-trend marigold yellow, breezy blue, cherry red or vibrant peach? And remember – dark shades aren’t just reserved for the colder months. Can’t decide on a hue? Try gradient shades of one original colour, or a rainbow of your favourite pastel hues. If au natural is more your aesthetic, an opalescent polish graduating in intensity (ombre to those in the know) makes for a magical moment, while a swipe of glossy topcoat keeps out dirt and adds a healthy sheen. Nothing says nails like a classic French tip, but this traditional manicure has had a modern refresh for SS19/20; the expected white tips have been replaced by a rainbow of shades. How about experimenting with best of both worlds by picking your two favourite complementing colours for a two-tone tip?

We’re seeing sequins everywhere! They’re the hottest embellishment that you literally can’t miss. While a little black dress may be a classic in the fashion world, held up against an outfit showcasing sequins – eyes will more often than not be drawn to the latter. With the warmer season just around the corner, it’s high time we gave you some tips on how to rock some summer sequins.

All that glitters: While we did say that in a match against a little black number and a sequin dress, sequins would prevail, a hybrid of the two would make for a head-turner. A little black sequin dress is a sassy and sexy wardrobe must-have. It may not be the right attire for a trip to the supermarket, but it would definitely be appropriate for celebrating that new promotion, birthday or even the New Year.
B.
C.
Time to reflect: If upon reflection you feel as if a sequin dress may be too much for you, there are other options. Dress pants are always a good idea to have in the wardrobe, especially if they’re made of matte micro sequins. These are perfect because they can be dressed up or down based on the top or accessories that you pair them with.
D.
A ‘subtle’ shine: If we’re being honest, there’s nothing subtle about sequins. They’re a look that shines… quite literally. But there are other ways to include them into your outfits that aren’t so extensive – one word: accessories. A simple clutch sporting sequins is a great way to add a finishing touch to any outfit. It’s an item that doesn’t scream ‘look at me’ but instead just politely asks for eyes to wander its way. Shimmy, shimmy: Combining both fringe and sequins may seem like a crazy idea but, like peanut butter and jelly, even though they shouldn’t work… they do. There’s something satisfying about being able to shake your hips and having your outfit move with you. The Rozela Dress by LEXI is a perfect example of style and fun coming together to provide some newage glamour. Girl in stilettos: You can usually hear these shoes before you see them but with the addition of glittering silver-toned sequins, you can make sure they’re definitely seen as well. Having sequins line the straps of a black stiletto is a sure way to reinvent a classic design.

Stress relief Exposure to nature not only makes you feel better emotionally, it contributes to your physical wellbeing, reducing blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension and the production of stress hormones. Vitamin D You can’t get the right amount of vitamin D your body needs from food. The most natural way to get vitamin D is by getting out in the sun, but make sure you do it safely and sensibly.
4. 5.
Promotes better sleep Even light exercise helps people sleep better. Meanwhile, the natural light patterns strengthen the production of melatonin which is responsible for those feelings of sleepiness you get in the evening. Boosts brain health Research suggests that people who take walks in nature are also reaping mental health benefits like less depression and lower stress levels.
Enjoy the outdoors every day! We have two prize packs containing summer essentials to help with bites, bruises and burns. Each pack contains: Goodbye OUCH Sun Balm 80g, Goodbye OUCH Manuka Balm 25g and Goodbye SANDFLY 50ml. 40s Exercising into your
AND BEYOND
From increased bone density to better muscle mass and heart health, there is no doubt that exercise is an important part of staying healthy for women who are 40 and beyond. Cath Julius, Clinical Director at Freedom Health Physio and Pilates, gives a few simple tips for making exercise work for you.
PHYSIOTHERAPY
Find movement you love The number one key to integrating exercise into your life is to find activities that you enjoy doing. Don’t be fooled into claims like ‘the best exercise for women over 40’. The only movement that works in the long term is the one that you enjoy. Take time and explore different options. What you loved when you were 20 is often different to the movement your body enjoys at 40. Accept hormonal changes and work with professionals who understand From the age of 40, the female body experiences a number of hormonal changes and the effect of these hormonal changes goes well beyond hot flushes. Many women are unaware that hormones also have an impact on soft tissues such as tendons and ligaments and even your pelvic floor. This means that some women start to experience new symptoms they have not felt before, ranging from hip pain to leakage. But just because it’s hormonal, doesn’t mean you have to surrender and accept these symptoms. Find a health professional who understands Women’s Health and Exercise and let them guide you back to a movement routine that works for you.
At Freedom Health, there’s a team of experts at exercise and women’s health. No matter what your concern, they understand and they can help you to keep doing the things you love – for life. Contact them today on 03 355 6699 to learn more.

Acknowledge where you are For many women, the 40s marks a transition from the primary caregiver to re-prioritising yourself. But if you have been less active during the last 5 to 15 years, it is important to acknowledge that your body needs time to recondition and strengthen. Expecting to jump straight back into your old routine from 10 years ago is setting yourself up for frustration and possible injury.

The LBB (little black bikini) This bad boy is the classic staple for any summer closet. The little black bikini imparts effortless chic, and judging by runways the globe over, we won’t be short of variety. Signature string styles, plunging necklines and underwire bandeaus are all getting the black treatment. Surfer chic Wetsuit-style one-pieces with chunky zips are making waves, as is swimwear with sleeves – say what? Whether you’re looking for more UV protection or you want a more elegant, stylish piece, sleeved bikinis and one-pieces will do just the trick. All in the straps Statement straps are having their moment… pretty ruffled straps and bikini tops with short flowy sleeves both featured at Miami Swim Week, alongside teeny-tiny, super-skinny straps. If you can’t decide, why not try a one-shoulder piece? This on-trend asymmetrical look is sleek, sophisticated and more practical than other current swimsuit styles.

34 Retro revival Retro styles are sure to have their fair share of appearances this season, as high-waisted bikini briefs, fun 70s florals, timeless polka dots and super-sweet gingham all inject vintage cool into the modern trends of the moment. Brilliant brights Fluorescent hues pack that playful punch; neon blue gives off major beach babe vibes, while a pop of yellow is bound to get you in the summer mood. Juicy citrus hues are in the mix, along with the sizzling shades of highlighter green and shocking purple. Summer shimmer Take a plunge into bold style with gleaming metallic styles, sparkly lurex and embellished pieces. Tanning is no doubt top of your summer agenda, so consider earthy tones like chocolate-browns, golds, rusts and bronzes – the perfect complementary shades for sun-kissed skin. Keep the design simple – these fabrics speak for themselves.

Pucker up: Skincare may be hot on your agenda, but lips also need some summer loving. Look for lipgloss that provides moisture with SPF. Slough it away: This is the time of year to step up your exfoliation routine; follow it up with a great moisturising routine and you’re away laughing.
D.
Don’t scrimp on the scalp: Hair may provide some protection, but sensitive scalps can still get burned. Use sunscreen along your hair line and where your hair parts.
C.
Rinse and repeat: Take a few extra showers, especially after sweating. The added benefit to hydration is that it will keep your skin clear. Get hatty: This is the best excuse to pull that wide rimmed hat out of the closet for full protection.

Does concussion stop the brain cleansing? A clean brain that is well fed and nourished is a healthy brain that fights off dementia and other cognitive disorders.
C
oncussions occur as the result of a traumatic blow to the head. This causes the brain and supporting membranes to bounce, twist and get damaged inside the skull. Developments in the longerterm effects of concussion have featured in the news recently, as new brain research illustrates just how long-term and wide-ranging effects can be. After one of the largest ever investigations into the link between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and cognitive decline in later life, Danish and US researchers concluded that the younger a person was when sustaining a head injury, the higher the risk of developing a form of dementia. The study looked at the health records of 2.8 million people over 36 years and found that individuals who sustained a TBI in their 20s were 63 percent more likely to develop dementia
in the next three decades than someone who did not sustain one. Gill Redden, of Gill Redden Cranio, specialises in actually treating concussion symptoms rather than monitoring and forming plans, effectively treating patients sometimes months or years after the initial injury. “It is better, however, if people seek treatment immediately after their head or tailbone trauma, certainly not waiting 6 weeks to see if they ‘come right.’” says Gill, “Some of their cranial bones will definitely be jammed up!” Using CranioSacral therapy, Gill provides a post-concussion treatment programme that helps nurture the bones, membranes, organs, tissue, nerves and blood vessels back to free movement, helping enable people to be pain and dysfunction-free. Spinal fluid can’t move freely if bones
and membranes are jammed up. This fluid feeds and also detoxifies the brain. It is critical that the spinal fluid is flowing and CranioSacral therapy supports to ensure it is. Gill also works directly with the brain scars that form when a trauma occurs. Some troublesome symptoms are not actually concussion, and can be relatively simple to treat through freeing jammed or twisted bones and membranes
which in turn enables the brain to heal more easily. Gills comprehensive concussion-focused website allows people to gain a better understanding of concussion and its consequences, provides a concise description of what CranioSacral therapy is and is validated by testimonials of clients sharing their experiences of recovery and a pain and drug-free life.

A worthy reason to run! You can’t run it naked, but your joy will be unconfined as you gambol your way over the gentle rolling hills, serene shady valleys and ‘a-year-in-Provence’-worthy vineyards of Pegasus Bay Winery, to help raise funds for Canterbury’s own world-renowned New Zealand Brain Research Institute.
T
he gorgeous and fun Vine Run is back once again better than ever, and will next be held on Sunday 26 January 2020. There is a 6km, 10km and a brand new 18km race. Walkers are very welcome on the 6 and 10km routes, but note that the courses are not suitable for wheeled conveyances in
any form. There are no age categories within the races, with the emphasis being firmly on fun for everyone. Literally the brainchild of Ivan Donaldson, co-owner of Pegasus Bay along with wife Christine, the inspiration for this great event was his career as a neurologist and long
association with the amazing New Zealand Brain Research Institute. “We’re working hard to make 2020 our best Vine Run yet,” event organiser Mike Donaldson says. “Last year we raised $26,000 for the institute and we’re aiming to do even better this time. To help beat the heat,
we’ve brought the start time forward a little and will also have a marquee at the finish to encourage people to stay on after the race and celebrate. There’s a great opportunity here for corporates to sign up as a group, and we hope as many people as possible will get in the spirit by dressing up.” You can step up your contribution to the New Zealand Brain Research Institute by becoming a ‘Brainy Runner’ – if your fundraising effort tops $300, you will receive a Brainy Runner Vine Run sports top and there are prizes for the top three Brainy Runners on the day. There will be live music at the finish line, so bring a picnic or enjoy the catering options of Pegasus Bay. Entries are limited and each participant aged 18+ receives a bottle of Pegasus Bay wine to take away. The first three males and females home in each race receive a prize, and there are spot prizes too. Visit www.vinerun.co.nz for more information, course descriptions, registration and Brainy Runner registration.

Canterbury Bride
Trends that take the cake By Erin Muir
The cake; it continues to occupy that all-important role of wedding centrepiece and this year, wedding cake options are unfolding like blossoms in spring – they are eyecatching, gorgeous, joyous and more wildly diverse than ever! From naked cakes to extravagant drifts of multi-coloured art, from royal lemon and elderflower iced beauties to tiers of actual cheese wheels – the variety is stunning.
H
istory has it that the Romans broke a simple wheat or barley cake over the bride’s head after the ceremony for good luck and guests shared the crumbs, starting a long tradition of sharing the cake with friends. In the Middle Ages couples kissed over a tall tower of small spicy buns for a long and happy marriage, hoping the stack would not fall over! The 17th century brought in sweet fruit cakes and, at Queen Victoria’s wedding in 1840, a hard bright icing was created 46 7 November, 2019 Metropol
and called ‘royal icing’. But it wasn’t until 1882 that the first iced tiered cake was presented – with every tier edible. From then on the cake became the marvellous wedding icon it is today. In 2019 we have seen numerous trends emerging. Meghan and Harry cakes – lemon and elderflower concoctions on three separate stands – have been popular. But other trends are rising too. Multi-tier cakes – as high as 10, 12 or even 14 tiers – are
hot property. Some prefer the rounded look with a large base leading up to a small top, while others are going for the stark beauty of geometric squares and rectangles – with an occasional triangle or hexagon thrown in. Some use copper or black colouring for elegant effect. And, to add even more interest, it has become popular to ice some of the tiers with geometric designs – gorgeous Moroccan and Middle Eastern motifs are becoming extremely popular. A geometric tablecloth
is sometimes added to create yet another layer. For the nature lovers, ferns have replaced eucalyptus leaves. Crisp, elegant green leaves add a new dimension with the soft beauty of green against white, while trailing greenery incorporated expertly with icing is another style proving popular. Also on-trend are ‘naked’ cakes, where the fillings between the ‘fault lines’ have been extended for added interest, with the outside iced only minimally or not at all. And the 100 percent plant-based vegan cake is another popular must-have. For the lovers of artistic abandon, there is a rising trend of cakes showcasing palette knife-painted buttercream, sometimes with poetry inscribed or the names of the married couple, and sometimes a creation of lavish multicoloured modern art, almost too beautiful to cut – let alone eat! It seems that 2020 will be the year where creativity will run riot – so let’s enjoy the tasting and the unfolding evolution of the cake!

Jewellery to cherish Apart from family and good health, the one thing people hold dear to their hearts is their jewellery; the thought of losing or having to part with treasured pieces would seem almost unbearable.
V
ia Sollertia has always understood this; they design jewellery to be cherished for a lifetime. They oversee every commission from start to finish, and clients are assured nothing ever leaves the studio, as every piece is designed, handmade and completed in-house with a full-time jeweller onsite. Clients can opt for either a bespoke, one-off
design created specifically for them, or they can choose from Via Sollertia designs created before. Hand-selecting their own diamonds or gemstones makes the piece uniquely theirs. It takes four weeks for a piece to be completed, so there’s plenty of time to plan that incredibly romantic overseas proposal you’ve been dreaming about.
he V For Hair and Beauty team has all the latest techniques and products to make embracing your grey easy, Master Stylist Vicki OgdenO’Fee says. “You don’t need or want flat, dull grey hair. We can give you a shimmering sexy blonde or cool iris sparkle, or many more to embrace the grey.” You don’t want to live at your hairdressers, so rather than leaving a harsh regrowth line, their techniques will disguise new growth with a soft, flattering look. “We understand that as your grey hair comes in you still want to look great. A great cut also plays a big part in this; you want a cut that enhances your features.” Head in for a complimentary consultation with one of their specialists in going grey gracefully. After all, V For Hair and Beauty ‘gets’ grey hair and takes great pride in making ladies feel beautiful.

The power of nourishment By Céline Gibson
When trained midwife Kat detected a sizeable lump in her pelvic region, she knew it was something to be concerned about and had it checked out immediately. Several tests and scans later, it was confirmed that she had metastatic melanoma, an aggressive type of skin cancer.

his came as devastating news to Kat, who was looking forward to marrying Darryl, the love of her life, in 2016 and settling down to a long and happy life together. Kat underwent palliative surgery but refused further invasive treatments. Little did she know at the time that she
was already on the journey to what was to become the most fulfilling work she and Darryl would ever know; and it all began with food presented on a hospital tray. “I know budgets are tight, but the food was carcinogenic food that would literally support the spread of cancer,” Kat says.
“Our plant-based mobile café came about because of three things: I always wanted to have my own café; there was nowhere to eat out that served healthy and tasty food; and, most importantly, this is our way of paying it forward. If we can provide people with one meal a day that’s packed with all the wonderful things to support their health, then that’s our job done. The power of nourishment can never be underestimated.” When not out in their mobile café, Kat gives cooking demos at her home, showing friends and colleagues how to make simple nutritious plant-based meals that aren’t expensive or time-consuming. “I love the creativity of thinking up new and different menus, and experimenting with new recipes. I’m so happy when I’m cooking – listening to beautiful music… I even dream of food now!” Currently Kat and Darryl’s mobile café services a city health provider two days per week, and visits Ohoka Farmers’ Market every Friday. They’ll happily cater for any function or event, and look forward to festivals, such as the 2019 FGS Vegefest on 24 November, and the Aroha Essence Festival, 17-19 January 2020. “We’re passionate about what we do, and have big plans to grow our business,” Kat says, “There’s nothing more satisfying than handing over our lifeaffirming food to customers.” Visit www.facebook.com/ kindeatss/.

One day Kat photographed her food tray and made a vow that should she survive the cancer, she’d do all in her power to try to help people understand that good foods can go a long way in preserving good health. Kat never ate any of the hospital food; instead, she took her nourishment from the green smoothies Darryl brought to her daily. Overall, the statistics for surviving metastatic cancer aren’t good. Kat says many people have asked her how she survived it and she says that language around the disease is very important. “I never owned it. I never got angry or thought about ‘fighting it’. But I did feel determined about going with my own instincts as to dealing with it.” Kat’s instinct was to begin an eating regime based on the extensive reading and research she’d been doing on nutrition and healing from disease. “I believe diet plays a big role in healing the body. Basically, with the disease I had – of that magnitude – I couldn’t afford to make bad food choices. I made the decision to eat food that would support my nutrition and immunity, and give me the vitamins and minerals I needed, and I steered away from anything that would cause inflammation and send toxins through my body.” Four years on and Kat is finally making good on that vow she made the day she photographed her tray of hospital food.

Food Forecast By Clementine Page
This year has seen a myriad of healthy food trends climb the ranks, from an uptake of pre and pro-biotic consumption to an emphasis on sustainably conscious foods. While these won’t be disappearing, 2020 brings a new host of food trends to the table. According to Whole Foods, here’s what you should add to your shopping list come next year.

Flour power Move over white flour, filling the shelves of the baking aisle next year are fascinating flours made from fruit and vegetables. You’ve probably already heard of the keto-friendly coconut and almond flours, but in 2020 you’ll be able to boost your baking with more protein-packed, higher-fibre flours from the likes of bananas, cauliflowers, chickpeas and tigernuts. Pastas and other packaged foods will also be getting a nutritious makeover. Drunk-free drinks The year 2019 saw a spike in healthier alcohol with lower percentages, sparkling water RTDs and kombucha-infused beverages. These aren’t going anywhere, but more innovative alcohol-free beverages are expected to be front and centre at parties and bars next year as millennials in particular swap out hard liquor for botanical-infused, distilled faux spirits like those available from Seedlip. Raise a glass to deliciously healthy concoctions, sober driving and hangover-free weekends! Fiesty flavours of Africa Make way for the wholesome, tangy foods of West African countries like Nigeria and Senegal. Key flavours include tomatoes, onions, chilli peppers, peanuts, ginger and lemongrass, and dishes also typically incorporate superfoods such as moringa, tamarind, sorghum and millet. It’s a yes from us! Plant-based progress Soy, which has dominated the plant-based arena for quite some time, is moving out of the limelight as brands begin to experiment with other nutritious and less allergy-causing plant-based proteins such as mung beans, hempseeds, avacadoes and even golden chlorella (a type of algae). Whole Foods predicts the plant-based movement will continue to snowball, with the market for meat substitutes expected to hit $2.5 billion by 2023. Not-so-simple sugars Wave goodbye to the traditional white stuff - sugar substitutes are expanding exponentially, from fruit-based sweeteners derived from pomegranates, dates and monk fruit to sweet syrups made from starches like sorghum and sweet potato. Jazz things up in the kitchen with these new unique flavours perfect for desserts, glazes, marinades and more.

ASPARAGUS:
Stalk of the town
The short but sweet season of asparagus is finally here – and there’s nothing quite like the local, freshly picked spears from the farm of Gray’s Produce.
C
hristopher and Jenny Gray planted their first bed of asparagus in 2003 and maintain strict quality control from field to packhouse. The entire process happens onsite; picking, packing, selling and delivering keep the couple and their team of workers busy over asparagus season. The succulent asparagus is the couple’s mainstay, while tomatoes and potatoes are also a big part of the available produce. Due to its high sodium content, the soil produces optimum quality asparagus, making for delicious green
spears that are snapped up at the local farmers’ markets of Lyttelton, Lincoln and Opawa. Of course, the asparagus is also available direct from the farm in Motukarara, just off the Christchurch Akaroa Road. The couple are also beekeepers, and sell their own clover honey, alongside locally made goats’ milk soap and free-range eggs. Several top Canterbury restaurants such as Otahuna Lodge, 27 Steps and Papanui Working Men’s Club feature Gray’s delicious asparagus in their dishes.
Fresh Asparagus
Asparagus season doesn’t hang around for long, so now’s the time to indulge in those tender green spears. The perfect summer superfood!

Takeaway without throwaway Christchurch coffee connoisseurs now have a convenient, environmentally friendly option for their daily takeaway coffee, with reusable cup sharing company Again Again launching its revolutionary system in the city.
T
wenty-two cafés around Christchurch have joined the launch, including 16 Coffee Culture cafés, three Switch Espressos, Prima Roastery, XCHC and Procopé. “Our mission is to make reuse as normal as the convenience of takeaway coffee,” Again Again Founder Nada Piatek says. “People already want to do the right thing, now we’ve provided a system that makes that
possible without sacrificing convenience.” Again Again makes a fleet of reusable steel cups, silicone lids and cardboard heat sleeves available by deposit and return at participating cafés. Customers order their coffee as usual. They pay a $3 deposit when they ‘check out’ a cup, which is fully refunded when they return the cup to a participating café. Again Again then manages cup redistribution around its café network. The company’s research suggests fewer than five percent of coffees are served in personal reusable cups, which require users to plan in advance, remembering to wash and bring their cups with them every time. Again Again estimates its café network now diverts 50,000 cups from landfill every month or 600,000 per year, which Nada estimates will reach 800,000 once the new Christchurch café network is up and running. Nada says the 295 million disposable cups that go to landfill every year in New Zealand is a problem worth solving. “Our mission is to make reuse normal by making it convenient.”

Appetitefor life By Tracey Edwardes
After being dished up a serving of the real Jax Hamilton, you come away with an appetite for life.
T
he fun-loving queen of food first caught the public’s eye as MasterChef New Zealand’s runnerup in season two. Then for the next six years her Cheshire Cat smile and cockney banter brightened up the ad breaks as food ambassador for Countdown. Jax is now fabulously freestyle with plenty of bite-sized projects filling her crazy life to the max. Originally from London, she arrived in Timaru in 2001 with her then Kiwi husband, before migrating North to her forever home of Christchurch. London life was exciting working for WEA Records as a Press Officer for some notable celebs. “However, Christchurch embraced with more warmth than London ever did,” she says. And she’s here to stay. The marriage ended in 2009, however she warmly describes her long-term partner, a Property Manager, as a stunningly gentle and gorgeous guy. “He balances my chaos, we’re like ying and yang.” Her tucked-away abode, which she shares with Pumpkin the cat, is where Jax’s real personality is showcased – all over the walls. Her projects and plans are scribbled in liquid chalk on her office window, illuminated by sunlight. “I just haven’t got enough room,” she laughs. Inspirational musings are pinned to the bedroom door – so they are top of mind every morning. Purposeful quirky slices of life are everywhere. Even her toilet has a chalk wall for quotes on one side, photos of her now grown-up sons on the other, and the Queen on her shower curtain, with plenty of other nods to old blighty. This all makes the British-born 53-year-old with Jamaican heritage feel right at
58 7 November, 2019 Metropol
home. The Colour Purple is her favourite novel – its pages line an art-deco cabinet she artfully transformed. Boxes inside boxes, she organises her cosy, jam-packed creative pad to function with her full schedule. Engaging rituals to de-stress include quiet moments on the swing in the park next door. “I cope by living life fully, and in harmony, in 10-minute increments – then it’s easy.” “I like to eat dinner when the sun is going down, or sometimes have a relaxing bath in middle of the day, infused with camomile or lemon verbena.” She makes her own Jamaican chilli sauce, has designed ‘Jax’ tea towels, written two cookbooks and formulated a range of hair products to tame her head-turning dreads. “My hair and glasses are my brand, so I make extra effort to keep them sharp.” Her days are spent on causes that really resonate with her heart. They say charity should begin at home – and Jax’s focus lies with her Christchurch community. “Our job as humans is to nourish each other.” Jax is a recruit with Nora’s Army, helping a little girl with a rare cancer who needs lifesaving treatment in Texas, fundraising when and how she can. She helped collate the recipe book Eats for the charity One Mother to Another which supports mothers and caregivers with children in the Christchurch neonatal units. Jax has also joined the team presenting Christchurch’s new garden festival Grow Ōtautahi as a food ambassador. And as a mentor to the next generation of cooks, Jax has taken seven-year-
old Maiyah Martin of ‘Girl with Cake Project’ under her wing – with all funds going to the Christchurch City Mission. If you’d like your own slice of Jax, she is available as a MC and for keynote speaking and cooking demonstrations. “This is what I love to do. You’ll get the real, authentic me and I’m always honest – and this is where I really get to turn the volume up!” She adds, “when I discuss business, it’s about planting a seed of integrity and authenticity, where we grow together. I like to chase the passion and not the purse. I call my job ‘giggles and nibbles’. “I naturally give who I’m with my full attention and presence. If I’m having dinner in a restaurant, for example, I’ll engage with the waiter – because I’m really having dinner with him too!” Her tip for Christmas feasting: “Prep beforehand as much as possible. It’s the time to be together, and you can’t do that if you’re busy in the kitchen. There’s not much prep in crayfish and champagne!” She will no doubt have some divine delectables of her own ready in her freezer and SMEG UnionJack fridge. Surprisingly, Jax says she would choose music over food any day. “Melody fulfils me, and then I cook! And love goes in first – it’s all a dance.” With her love of cooking, and a warm personality and heart, Jax has certainly got her own recipe just right. “I have never been happier,” she says. See more of Jax on www.jaxhamilton.co.nz and also www.jaxfoodhax.com for foodie tips and tricks.

Delivery Express now has close to 50 restaurants and cafés signed up with meals the same price as in-store. Customers can save up to 30 percent on each order by not paying any hidden delivery charges. When Sharma went to his first restaurant owner to showcase the advantages of Delivery Express, which he believes is the “next generation of food ordering/delivery ecosystem”, they recognised the idea and the thinking behind it as too good to miss. Some of the top Korean and Indian restaurants of Christchurch are exclusive with Delivery Express and another top 10-20 are expected to join soon. Delivery Express allows you to place your next order for some of Christchurch’s most delectable delights with no fuss, delivered quickly to your doorstep. Customers are notified in-app as the order progresses from ‘order confirmed’ to ‘delivered’. Whether you require a home delivery, takeaway, or are simply wanting to book a table, Delivery Express is your new food app of choice.
Food app takes big bite One year ago, tech entrepreneur Himanshu Sharma wanted to order food for delivery from his regular favourite restaurant via a delivery service app, for a social gathering. However, he was stunned to see there was nearly a 30 percent price mark-up for the delivery compared to in-store menu prices, which left Sharma feeling ripped off.
T
hen came the idea. Sharma began to develop a platform for those who liked eating food at home, but who didn’t want to pay more than they had to for that luxury. One year later, his tech start-up

A sumptuous spread It’s nearly the end of the decade – time to shout the team a well-earned Purple Weka spread.
P
urple Weka Café and Bar is open and humming at 6am, so people can park outside the door to grab their catering order for get togethers in the boardroom or tradies’ toolbox shouts. It’s a great little licensed venue for functions too, seating up to 50. Hands-on owner and foodie Stu has 20 years’ experience in the industry. He creates the best, from antipasto platters, egg ‘n’ bacon slices and sumptuous club sandwiches through to decadent scones with jam and
cream. Purple Weka sells jars of its own homemade jam and marmalade too – a sweet as Christmas pressie! Just like the café, it’s always wholesome, homestyle cooking for the popular catering service, Stu says. Around 36 hours’ notice is appreciated, but you can always ask. Stu knows his customers and has high-protein fixes for an energy injection, like berry and banana high-protein shakes and a peanut butter and dark chocolate protein slice. Saintly yet sinful!
Those in the know also head for Purple Weka’s whitebait sammies at this time of year, which, subject to availability, are always a sell-out. It’s served Kiwi-style only – that’s between soft white bread with a squeeze of lemon. To arrange catering – no order too large or too small – or to pre-order fabulous takeaway coffee, phone 03 366 0258, or visit www.purplewekacafe.co.nz for the catering menu. Pop down to Purple Weka on Fitzgerald Avenue, which is open seven days a week, if you haven’t already.

Basket Case By Jess Murray
Baskets can be ideal for home décor or to help organise a space in an inexpensive way. Like most things, they come in every shape and size. Not only are they aesthetically pleasing, they’re also a lifetime member of the practicality party, offering a great storage space for home essentials. We check out the best ways to style this handy home accessory.
T
he obvious choice would be to use them as storage – whether that’s small, dainty baskets in the bathroom, under storage baskets in the bedroom or flat-back baskets in the kitchen, it’s up to you. Old bicycle baskets are even a quirky way to keep your spaces storage savvy and an excellent way of repurposing. Woven baskets are great for using as pots for your house plants – they’re definitely a step up from
dreary plastic containers that they originally come with. A way of combining practicality and uniqueness is by hanging wicker baskets in your bathroom. They can double as both wall art and storage for your towels. In saying that, baskets don’t always have to be used for storage, they can be wall art too! So if you find something that you would like to display… then do it. Be bonkers for baskets!

Tealey Beaut By Jess Murray
Teal is trending. The quirky colour is taking homewares by storm and bringing a much-needed breath of fresh air to Kiwi homes.
W
hile it may not be your everyday primary colour, ironically it fits perfectly into your everyday home. In terms of where it fits into the colour wheel, it’s a medium blue-green colour, which can also be described as a darker variant of cyan.

Whether you introduce the harmonious hue to your house by adding a large teal-inspired feature wall or a simple vase – there will always be some appeal when using the colour teal. So, in the spirit of summer, we check out how to style this colour that is perfect for the warmer season.
• Strong • Durable • Clean • Affordable • Less Maintenance
tiful
It’s all in a name: They say it’s all in the name, so it makes sense to take some inspiration from where the colour originated from. Teal gets its name from the colouring that can be found around the eye of the common teal (a member of the duck family). In honour of that, a nice way to both liven up your garden and pay tribute to the birds would be to hang a teal birdhouse. Great things come in small packages: Teal pops with white but also pairs well with cream, navy, gold and brown tones. That’s why using something as subtle as a teal cushion cover can really make a difference to a boring cushion or a barren couch. The perfect chair: In the theme of chairs, a teal armchair is another stylish way to incorporate the colour into your home. It could even be placed in a sunny nook looking out onto that garden where you hung your wholesome birdhouse. If you were really feeling a new found love for teal, an ottoman supporting the same colour could even be paired with the armchair. It’s a true match made in heaven.

The BIG trend of going SMALL
One size and one shape definitely does not fit all. One weekend recently, I had the pleasure of joining a tour of architectural homes which championed the principles of energy awareness and conservation, amongst other things. Style over size was evident amongst all the individual and specific architectural signatures, as was the variation of spatial configurations, and this has caused me to reflect on the increasing popularity of smaller properties and the acceptance of different ways of doing things. Firstly, size. Not small, as in ‘let’s fit your entire life into a caravan’, but small as in compact, thoughtful and clever, is enjoying an increase in popularity throughout our region. The restraint required to ‘live smaller’ would be too much for me and it’s no secret that I have a maximalist rather than a minimalist approach, but I can definitely
appreciate why this trend is gaining momentum nationally and internationally. Millennials wanting a chance to get onto the property ladder are considering alternatives to the types of properties their parents might have started with, and size features strongly in this equation, whilst retirees are wanting to turn things on their head and look to a similar lifestyle and property, but smaller, having been there and done that. One of the reasons for considering a smaller dwelling is obvious: energy efficiency. A smaller house should be easier to heat, and this flows directly on to a reduced cost. A smaller ecological footprint, helping both your pocket and our planet. Solarpowered options feature, as do passive heating methods based around a house’s orientation and construction. Excess materials, color choices and furniture are all pared back, and clever storage options become all-important. The other notable element in choosing to live like this is that your community and your city surroundings take on a whole new meaning, and with ‘intimate’ (my word for
‘tiny’!) garden spaces, you can see the merit in this. The park next-door acts as your garden and the city, your backyard – and potentially a scooter replaces your car. For me, it seems like the easiest time to make a decision to commit to this lifestyle would be when you first start out and don’t have much or later when you have so much that you think, ‘I now want less’. That middle period with kids, cars, bikes and all the other stuff that comes with life would make it too hard for some, but as the tour I’ve referred to has taught me, not everyone feels this way. Therein lies the beauty of the times we live in and the choices we have. One size certainly doesn’t fit all – nor is it expected to – and it just so happens that there are architects, builders, developers and designers thinking the same way. It makes for an engaging and interesting era.

Mummy Mugs Make Waves When it comes to looking after children, it’s all too easy to forget to look after yourself. A group of Sumner mums have teamed up with talented potter Tatyanna Meharry to encourage mums across New Zealand to take five minutes to themselves to have a cuppa, with the proceeds going to support Plunket Nationwide to help mums with postnatal depression and also to the local Sumner kindy.
T
hese Christchurch mums are on a mission to encourage other mums to take five minutes a day to relax, press pause and take a moment to themselves to enjoy a cuppa in the beautiful ceramic ‘Mummy Mugs’ created from Sumner sand. With one in five mums experiencing postnatal depression, it was an easy decision to support this very worthy cause, designer and mum-of-two Kat Gee explains. “We are proud to align with Plunket and support their efforts to be there for mums when they feel depressed or anxious,” Kat says. “Parenting can be pretty full-on with everyone demanding your attention and sometimes you just need to make
yourself a cuppa and take a moment to reset. I was actually inspired by Jacinda Ardern saying that she loved having her large mug of tea on the go every day. “We aren’t all Jacinda Arderns but I thought, ‘gosh if it’s good enough for Jacinda, it’s good enough for other mums too’. And yes, she will be sent a mug too!” The Mummy Mugs are uniquely designed by mums for mums and have been inspired by the local beaches. Each mug is hand-glazed with a mix of both matte and shiny textures and feels like you are holding a cold stone that warms up with the tea of coffee. They are all dishwasher safe and come in one classic 375ml size. Show your support today by purchasing your Mummy Mug at www.mummymugs.com Priced at just $34.95, these mugs make the perfect Christmas gift for you or another mum, sister or friend. All orders need to be collected from Urban Style, Sumner on 7 December from 10am-2pm.

e need clear space to think; to feel; to be; a space that allows us to gather ourselves while we rest from the stimulation of the outside world. With smaller dwellings becoming ever more popular, savvy storage solutions are on the rise. It’s all very well to put all your stuff away in the laundry, or that spare bedroom – but if you can’t find what you need when you need it, tempers will fray and homes will unravel. So, carefully assess your home, its nooks and crannies, with an eye to maximising all the space it holds. With a measuring tape in hand, check out unused spaces and consider putting in appropriate shelving or shelved cupboards. Extra shelf storage above the kitchen bench is handy and if you use clear lookalike containers, they can be stacked one on top of another, or one behind another for clever organisation. Don’t waste cupboard space, make sure the cupboards are the right height for what you’re putting in them. Make objects clearly visible. Pot handles can be hung on cupboard doors, pots placed on a multi-tier shelf and recessed shelves can add extra
storage to a kitchen island. Drawer organisers compartmentalise electricals, jewellery, make-up, keys and more In the bathroom, a recessed shower shelf or shelves will take care of all the shower paraphernalia, while in the laundry cupboard, consider using boxes or hampers for separate items, such as towels, sheets, duvet covers, blankets and pillow cases, and make sure your cupboards all fit floor to ceiling for extra storage. The hot water cylinder can be moved to the laundry to create extra space, and a hanging shoe organiser is a great option for holding towels – and toilet rolls too. If you have a staircase, you can maximise the storage underneath and beside it. In the bedroom, a folding bed with space under the bed and bookshelves on the side will give marvellous extra storage. A wall of empty cylinders can be great storage for lots of little things, including shoes, and, in a loft room, pull out wardrobes of varying heights maximise the space beautifully. The possibilities are endless; be clever, be savvy – a clear, well organised home is a treasure of great price.

Savvy Storage:
Whitewashed Wonder This fresh, cool room manages to take the essence of trendy Scandi cool and blend it with a distinctly local, natural style.

T
he walls retain a modern minimalist look with the use of Resene Colorwood Whitewash, allowing the beauty of the wood grain to show through and add visual texture. The floor, painted in mild-mannered Resene Eighth Stonewashed, acts as the perfect canvas from which to launch the rest of the room in layers of warm neutrals and textures.
The clean lines of the vanity unit are painted in the darker, earthy Resene Colins Wicket to add dimension and depth to the room. This colour also makes the paler accessories – such as the towel ladder in Resene Rice Cake, a simple vase in Resene Half Stone Age and the hand basin – pop against the other neutrals. As a modern interpretation for bathroom storage, a ladder is used for towels and two round hooks, painted in Resene Rococo and Swiss Caramel, for extra hanging space. This is a colour scheme that cries out for plenty of natural accents and accessories; be inspired by the jute mat, the woven light shade and even the textures of the waffle towels or something as simple as a string bag. Bolder colour, such as the plant pot in Resene Influential and the deep yellow of the hand towel, add interest, while the on-trend round brass mirror and aged brass tapware bring added warmth and lustre.
Other colours to try with this natural eco cool colour scheme are:

Use bold verdant green accents and consider layering them in different strengths for a lush glade feel. Swap out the deep yellow accents used here for dramatic burnt oranges and add in contrasting hooks in smokey greys. Top it all off with plants that flower in orange. Resene Colorwood Whitewash also works well with greys and blues for a soothing, beachy look. For a more earthy look, opt for rich browns or terracotta shades.

ith spring well and truly here, there’s a buzz of activity and excitement in the air in Ōtautahi. Recent figures show that economic growth is positive and unemployment remains relatively low. It’s also great to see that international visitor spending is up, now at $222 million in Christchurch for the 2019 June quarter, showing just how much traction we are gaining in terms of driving our economy forward. This is particularly apparent in central city retail spending growth, reinforcing that Christchurch’s CBD is developing into an attractive proposition for residents and visitors alike, (figures were released before the new Riverside Market opened!). The inner-city farmers’ market is an exciting proposition for the city – and a truly impressive project to see come to fruition. It was great to see the huge groundswell of support shown by over 25,000 people that visited the market on opening day (well ahead of the predicted 10,000), as well as the crowds that have continued to frequent the bustling retail hub since. This shows how invested our population is in seeing these kinds of innovative developments succeed and prosper. Ballantynes too has recently opened its new retail space, which incorporates a deli, a café and a wine bar. It also includes three ‘exclusive to New Zealand’ brands: Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids and West Elm. Not to mention the line-up of exciting events – from the arts and Antarctica to rugby league, cricket and racing – promoted through ChristchurchNZ’s BLOOM spring campaign; a particularly fitting theme for the Garden City.
O
ver Labour Weekend, I took time out to wander through the central city. Things were really buzzing. The weather was great. I had a coffee at the restored Midland Club building; I wandered past the Terraces, which were busy, then into the Riverside Market which was doing a roaring trade. I listened to a busker with an incredible voice; I got a new outfit for the races from a New Zealand designer at The Crossing, which was where I also went to the supermarket; then over the road to the new Ballantynes extension, which was where I found a couple of loaf tins; and then I walked home and made some bread entirely from nuts, seeds and eggs – and it was delicious with avocado. The reason I am telling this story is that every person I spoke to along the way was feeling like we’ve really turned the corner. There was an air of optimism that was infectious and that’s how I feel as I put pen to paper to describe my hopes for the next term. I am really looking forward to building a strong team around the council table to deliver on the cities’ aspirations. Having listened to the new and returning councillors set out their hopes and dreams at the Council’s inaugural meeting, I know that we are well on our way to becoming the best place to live in the whole country.

oes getting a close look at 200 muscle cars worth more than $16m spin your wheels? The Grand Ford Mustang Show on 24 October 2020 is among the first events that will be held at the new Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre. It will be a great opportunity for local people to experience what is essentially the city’s showroom. With less than a year until Te Pae opens, experienced international venue operator ASM Global has a great mix of national and international events heading our way in the first few weeks. These include the Christchurch-based New Zealand College of Midwives, which will host its 16th Biennial National Conference at the venue – the first time it has hosted a national conference in the South Island for more than 10 years. This will be followed by Te Pae Christchurch’s first major international event, the International Association for Ecology (INTECOL) 11th International Wetlands Conference, which will bring around 1000 delegates to the city. Conference delegates tend to spend twice as much as a typical tourist. As a result, it is estimated Christchurch is missing out on around $100m a year in economic activity by not having a dedicated convention centre. So, with opening day fast approaching, the foot is to the floor on the site. There are now around 300 people working on site. Some can be easily seen attaching the 43,000 braided river façade panels. Others have been busy high above us, putting the finishing touches on the roof, to allow the internal fitout to go up a gear.

n October 2011 we established the Re:START container mall project to offer the people of Christchurch a glimmer of hope that one day their city centre would come back to life, provide a platform for the re-opening of Ballantynes and a positive place for our unique businesses to continue operating. Many of these businesses were small start-ups but they added interest and colour to what was a broken landscape. Re:START became a place that celebrated culture, diversity and the arts – a place where people could gather and interact together. Fast-forward to November 2019; we have seen the completion of the Ballantynes rebuild, which consolidates their offer back under one roof for the first time since the earthquakes, and the opening of Riverside Market. There is no better evidence that our hopes have now been realised. Riverside Market provides the central city with a unique market place where you will find fresh produce, artisans and some of our Re:START tenants now operating. Aside from being a fitting replacement for Re:START, it is heartwarming to see many of these businesses not only finding success but gaining a permanent home in Christchurch’s premier market place, Riverside Market. When entering Riverside for the first time, I was so excited I didn’t know where to look – then walking along the Oxford Terrace Promenade and seeing large crowds of people and Hefty Geoff performing on the street. It was heartwarming to see some of our much-loved street performers back performing and I think it was then, collectively, I knew a major rebuild step had taken place.

f it wasn’t official before, it sure is now. New Zealand has startup fever. Recently I was fortunate enough to attend Sunrise – an event organised by Blackbird, the Australian venture capital firm who are almost a household name in their home country. Blackbird recently opened its Auckland headquarters and has raised a $30m fund specifically to invest in ambitious Kiwi startups. Described as “a love letter to Kiwi founders”, this year’s Sunrise took place at the ASB Waterfront Theatre in Auckland with a capacity crowd of just under 700 startup founders, investors, and partners. Sunrise’s focus was on the startup journey told in first person by our own regional startup rockstars such as Melanie Perkins, co-founder of Canva – the Australian global online design platform currently valued at $5 billion; Shama Lee, founder of Auckland meat alternative company Sunfed Chicken; and our very own Cantabrian rockstar Brianne West, founder of Ethique – the zero-waste beauty company taking the world by a storm. While New Zealand’s – and Canterbury’s – startup ecosystem is still at an early stage of the startup lifecycle, we are beginning to pass encouraging milestones such as the global success of New Zealand’s first ‘unicorn’ companies (companies at more than $1b in value) which include Xero, Lanzatech, and RocketLab. Blackbird establishing itself in New Zealand is also an encouraging sign. As Samantha Wong, founder of Blackbird says, “What we are seeing in New Zealand right now really resembles Australia in 2013 and we think history is repeating itself”.
T
his time next year, the first conferences at the Te Pae convention centre will have been held and the city will be in another phase of regeneration. There has been media discussion recently about the significant economic benefits of hosting large conferences. For Christchurch, these benefits will be especially notable. The hospitality sector, in particular, will be keenly anticipating Te Pae’s opening. So too will the retail and tourism sectors. What cannot be underestimated is the significant positive impact increased visitors to Christchurch will have on the confidence of local residents and business owners to invest. Since the opening of the Riverside Market, which has attracted thousands of people, the area has more of a positive feel to it. Even so, as Christmas gets closer, the days get longer, and we think about the year ahead, we must continue to look for new opportunities to build on the benefits from the likes of Te Pae, Riverside Market and other developments. For Regenerate Christchurch, that means ensuring the legislation under which we operate (the Greater Christchurch Regeneration Act 2016) is utilised, where appropriate, to achieve benefits that would not otherwise occur or take longer to deliver. More broadly, the public sector must continue to promote best-for-city decision-making and work to create an environment where regeneration initiatives will be an ongoing component of the city’s development over the next 30 years.

CANTERBURY DESIGNERS Six out of the 10 award-winning projects at the 2019 ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards, one of New Zealand’s most prestigious architecture awards, are by Christchurch designers. 145 entries were received from some of the most talented designers across the country. The awards were held on Friday 18 October in Queenstown.
T
he Christchurch winners were Greg Young of Young Architects, Nic Curragh of Objects Ltd, Ben Brady of Linetype Architectural, Robert Weir of Weir Architecture and Chris Wheeler of Hierarchy Architecture. Greg Young from Young Architects won two awards for two different projects; the 2019 Residential New Home over 300m2 Architectural Design Award for a Merivale project titled ‘Gable Silhouette’, and the Residential Multi-Unit Dwelling Architectural Design Award for ‘Hereford Apartments’.

A simple family home, ‘Gable Silhouette’ is all about the enjoyment of living. The aesthetic has been inspired by the early work of Sir Miles Warren and the architecture of Central Otago. The other award-winning project, created by Young, was the design of four one-bedroom apartments on a 405sqm site in the inner city, with judges describing the four tiny single-bedroom units as being of rare spatial quality. Nic Curragh of Objects Ltd won the Residential New Home between 150m2 and 300m2 Architectural Design Award for his project ‘Red Rock Lane’. Nestled into a terraced hillside site in Redcliffs, this two-bedroom house has been positioned to enjoy the view east to the Southern Alps. All living spaces are accommodated on the first floor within two dark-stained cedar box forms. The more dominant north box, with its extensively glazed lounge, cantilevers out dramatically over a 13m lap pool and pool room. Ben Brady of Linetype Architectural won the Residential Alterations and Additions Architectural Design Award for his Sumner project titled ‘Esplanade Alterations’. A light hand was required on this 100-year-old arts and crafts villa. Although already renovated and earthquake repaired, the home required an alteration with more foresight and

a big picture perspective to make it suitable for modern life while retaining and enhancing its character features. Judge’s said Brady had given the grand old house a new lease on life through an alteration that brings out its best. “Restrained interior choices give it lightness and foregrounds the original features of the house. The entrance deftly makes a sculptural statement out of an inconveniently located tree. The house unfolds on arrival. A new spiral staircase in black steel at the rear of the house juxtaposes sympathetically with the white timber walls and leads to a detached studio.” The Crowne Plaza by Robert Weir of Weir Architecture received the Commercial/ Industrial Architectural Design Award. Weir Architecture was tasked with transforming an existing damaged office building into a new dynamic luxurious hotel. Featuring 204 spacious and modern hotel rooms, combined with the best views that Christchurch City has, the hotel sits proudly within the Performing Arts Precinct, bringing life and vitality back into the city. Meanwhile, the 2019 Resene Colour in Design Award went to ‘Coffee Culture The Crossing’ by Chris Wheeler of Hierarchy Architecture. The judges said that the stunning, neutral palette evokes style, warmth and grace.

build Her mum and stepdad, Julie and Nigel Lundy, own Metro Advances Ltd – with Gabby being one of their irreplaceable project managers. She gave birth to Isabelle, now two months old, a fortnight before the company’s latest townhouses were completed, remaining invested until the end – her project just as much her babies were! As an Avonside Girls student, she had a tourism career in sight and completed her Diploma in Business. This was put to great use in converting and expanding Metro’s Southwark Apartments building in the CBD to visitor accommodation following the earthquake; a business she started from the ground up in her late teens. However, the creative buzz with property projects remains her passion and her real calling was obvious. While officially on a break, Gabby admits, “it’s very hard to tear myself away”. Her four-year-old Jack attends Learning Curves Montessori
preschool – as will his little sister next year. Gabby is grateful for her close, supportive family. Where does work-life stop and family-life start? “It doesn’t,” Gabby laughs. “We are always discussing work around the family dinner table. But we love it.” It’s a family affair, with her two sisters, brother, step-brother and uncles in the industry too, and husband Jericho is her other half in more ways than one. “He’s my right-hand man and is responsible for the workers on site. We have a smooth-operating partnership; I can’t remember when we last had a fight!” Tradesmen, friends and family will often ring Gabby up for her savvy design advice. “Functionality is key. I like to step it up and invest in quality. I love bathrooms and search out Australian designers for trends, and also choose luxurious tapware, vanities, baths and showers. Landscaping is my other love and I sometimes get told off for going over budget. It’s hard
not to – we are the Garden City! Budgets can be a frustration but the skill is in the compromising.” Gabby started out with postearthquake bungalow renovations, but now leans towards Scandinavian style. She cites good organisation and being available for her team as her strengths. To de-stress, the busy mum’s advice is to take a deep breath, sit down and eat and drink something. “With so many trades being involved, you need to go away and investigate before jumping to conclusions if things go wrong,” Gabby says. “If something is leaking, it’s not necessarily the plumber!” The couple live in Julie and Nigel’s CBD pad while they build their own home. “The city is fantastic, I love strolling down Victoria Street and we have a yearly family tram pass. It’s important to create projects that entice people into the city. As to when the hard hat is back on, “I’m keeping it open and just going with the flow”.

HIGH-END DESIGN INSPIRATION “You may have the universe if I may have Italy,” said Verdi and having Milan, that city of style and culture to host EuroCucina, the largest kitchen trade fair in Europe, is non-negotiable.
M
ark and Jaden Allworthy, Owner and Showroom Manager of Bates Joinery, attended EuroCucina where
high-end kitchens, design and technology are showcased to Europe. They returned inspired by the colossal display of latest
best practice and design trends. They met designers, renowned manufacturers, and other professionals in the industry to
discuss everything about the modern kitchen. “It’s brilliant to go and learn about the state-of-the-art. From EuroCucina we got the trend forecast for New Zealand for the next few years – kitchen design is going into darker colours and soft matte blacks,” Mark says. The trip inspired the design of Bates’ new showroom back in Christchurch. Hosted on the trip by Blum and Hafele, Mark and Jaden have introduced the latest sliding and folding hardware technology to the showroom. The showroom has proved popular with clients who are finding decision-making easy with the range of materials displayed there, such as StyleLite acrylic supplied by Mulford Plastics, handles from Elite Hardware, High Pressure Laminate (HPL) and Melamine from New Zealand Panels Group, engineered stone benchtops from Artisan Stone, splashback in FLORIM, supplied by Archant and fabricated by Artisan Stone, and even Laminex High Pressure Laminate (HPL) and MELTECA by Laminex Group used for Jaden’s desk.

project, it wasn’t just a job, but one respected for its history and what it meant for the people. “As the biggest deconstruction in New Zealand, none of us have anything like this on our CVs, and likely won’t again!” The main contractors involved were Aecom for environmental controls support, Ceres removed seats and some memorabilia, Aotea services for services removal and decommissioning management, Taggart for soft strip (building strip-out) and Tui Stand demolition, Clearwater Construction for roof removal works, Daniel Smith Industries and Canterbury Cranes for crane supply and rigging staff, Yakka Contracting for main demolition, GE Construction for fencing and gates, and ATF for security and automatic gates. “Especially with earthquakedamaged buildings there were no guarantees of how anything was going to go. The huge roof with beams of 48 metres long was taken off separately, required months of planning, lots of signs offs, and removal of countless brackets and bolts. “It’s quite surreal to come to the finale.”

strength of the building. The structure actually starts from the ground up, with stone columns embedded into the ground, meaning the foundation itself could be relatively shallow. While it’s difficult to look past the stunning array of produce on offer, once inside, remember to look up at the roof to take in the scale of the exposed steel work which, together with the shear walls at the back of the building, are key to the structural support. “The challenge was to make the steel work architecturally attractive,” Nick says. “We worked as a group, integrating architectural, structural, and geotechnical requirements. Knowing the details had to look great because it was exposed meant we had to find an overall solution that ticked multiple boxes. Our job at Kirk Roberts is to find and offer better solutions for our clients.” The finished building is a fantastic asset. “We are so proud to have worked on what is a real feather in Christchurch’s cap.”

wo separate entrances lead to the house and the business. Though sharing space under the same roof as the house, the salon is a feature in itself as it has its own distinct look and feel. Timber, stone, soft grey plasterwork and interior walls painted in earthy tones make for a harmonious, neutral theme. The house comprises three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The master bedroom has a generous ensuite which boasts a full-sized stone bath with large window overlooking the garden. High-studded ceilings add visual dimension, while a full surround-sound system built into the ceiling, plus ducted heat pumps in each room, as well as under-floor heating, deliver ultimate comfort and relaxation. Vertical cedar finned walls (both interior and exterior) make a clever play of light and shade in the entranceway area. Overhead features, such as the entranceway’s slatted pergola and automatic roof over the outdoor dining area, are aesthetically pleasing yet practical. The aggregate driveway, stonework chimney and feature wall make for a grand entrance, while the tiled-cut, coloured concrete patios invite year-round outdoor living.
