In the last issue of 2020, I used this column to write about the year that was. Reflecting on those simpler, pre-pandemic times, I wrote: “We had no idea what was coming”. Re-reading those words before starting this editorial for the first Metropol issue of 2021, it struck me how the same sentiment can apply for the beginning of this, new, year ahead. We never really know what is around the corner. So, while we can make sensible choices to look after our physical, mental and financial health. We also shouldn’t try to load ourselves up with unrealistic expectation, either. Sure, when considered and thoughtfully executed, goals can help us achieve milestone moments we might have deemed otherwise impossible. But there is a hefty body of research which tells us those lofty aims declared at the beginning of each year, more often than not, fail. And usually before January is even through. I get it, there’s something seductive about a new year. That pristine diary staring at you with its blank pages, tempting you to fill each one with big, exciting and life-altering plans. Instead, why not take the pressure off yourself in 2021 and focus on the small everyday things, like getting up 15 minutes earlier to enjoy a morning coffee at home with your significant other, or fitting a pre-bedtime dog walk in a few times a week. Afterall, it’s those small, daily habits on which our lives are truly built.

Wiggling THEIR WAY TO NZ

They perform for littlies, but the star power of the Wiggles is anything but. And the South Island is set to be the first place in the world to hear them perform mid-pandemic. Metropol catches up with Red Wiggle (and new father) Simon Pryce, ahead of the We’re All Fruit Salad! tour. WORDS MELINDA COLLINS

T

he beloved children’s band – made up of Emma Watkins, Lachlan Gillespie, Simon Pryce and Anthony Field – will be joined onstage by Captain Feathersword, Dorothy the Dinosaur, Wags the Dog, Henry the Octopus and their newest Wiggly Friend; Shirley Shawn the Unicorn for one of 2021’s most highly anticipated tours (in certain circles) in March. “We have been to New Zealand a bit over the years,” says Red Wiggle Simon Pryce, who has just welcomed another Wiggles fan, his newborn son, Asher, earlier this month. “We can’t wait [to come to New Zealand]! Normally we

would be touring up to eight months in a year. The New Zealand shows will be the first we’re doing after 12 months! And New Zealand is a beautiful, beautiful place to come to.” A multiple-choice quiz through the school careers advisor suggested Simon was best suited to being a gift card shop owner, but he ended up studying sports science at university before the grandson of two opera singers found his way to drama school and, later, to The Wiggles. He had known the original band and done a lot of studio work for them over the years. In 2012 it was announced that Simon would replace Murray

Cook, who retired, along with lead singer Greg Page and Purple Wiggle, Jeff Fatt. “Murray and I were the same size, so maybe I just fit his skivvy and pants,” laughs Simon. But he was a natural fit – and not just for the stage costume! “It’s been eight years now, an incredible eight years. For some reason these things happen and you’re in the right place, right time.” The tour, which coincides with the band’s 30-year anniversary, promises all the classics, with some new songs, dances, drums, bagpipes and banjos. “It’s such an incredible job, particularly as an Australian

performer being able to travel the world. Meeting children and families around the world has been the standout about what we do,” explains Simon, who describes the fortunate position of being able to bring light into the lives of children and families who have been doing it tough, whether financially or medically. He recalls singing ‘Big Red Car’ to a young boy in hospital who started singing along, when the boy’s shocked father started crying. Turns out, those words had been the most his son had said all year. “That’s really been the foundation of 30 years of The Wiggles and that’s what keeps us going.” Often touring up to 300 days a year, it’s an intense workload. Band members need to look after themselves, get enough sleep and, a prerequisite, they must love the work! “You can’t be a grumpy Wiggle,” Simon laughs. “We’re inherently happy people, but when you’re doing shows, it could be the fourth show in a day for us. It’s tiring! But we try to remember that for a lot of the audience, it might be their first time seeing us live, so it’s up to us to give the best show possible. “The energy of the audience is so infectious; you can’t help but smile and have a great time.” And with the arrival of Asher the baby Wiggle, he’s going to need all the energy he can get! The tour kicks off in Invercargill on March 19 and will take the talented team to Dunedin, Christchurch, Queenstown, Tauranga, Hamilton, Auckland, Napier and Palmerston North before finishing in Wellington on April 1.

Instrumental to the community Rock may be in the name of this recognisable, 100 percent Kiwi owned company, but the Rockshop is far more than one genre of music. And alongside classical maestros, KBB Music, selling and renting musical instruments might be a main act – but the brand is committed to helping the musical community, too.

D

irector of Webb Group of Companies, trading as KBB Music and Rockshop, Brett Wells, says the Rockshop brand has been servicing New Zealand’s musical community since 1986, with the founding “band members” still deeply involved with day to day running of the business. KBB Music has been around since 1888,

so is very well placed - and regarded - as classical and orchestral music experts in New Zealand. “Music drives what we do,” says Brett. “Everybody in the company plays a musical instrument, performs, writes, records, tours or engineers (many do all of this) whether they’re running the

company, servicing the product, online or working in the stores. We’re all active musicians in our own right.” While music lovers are served by likeminded and skilled musicians, the company is much more than just its retail offerings, says Brett. “The company pours significant resources every year into events, performances, artists, organisations, clinics and teaching. Supporting New Zealand musicians at a fundamental level is crucial to nurture the talent to maintain our world class creative industry.” The Rockshop has been long-time supporters of Smokefree Rockquest (from day one to be exact), Rockshop Band Quest, Show Quest and Smokefree Tangata Beats as well as other artists, organisations, events, tutoring and teaching studios. KBB Music offers up the KBB Music Festival, Southern Jam, Christchurch Schools Music Festival and local support for the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. www.rockshop.co.nz | www.kbbmusic.co.nz

Poetry Knights WORDS CÉLINE GIBSON

It truly was a gathering of literary luminaries when literature and art magazine takahē celebrated 31 years of circulation with the recent launch of its 100th issue at, most fittingly, the Sign of the Takahē.

urrent takahē chair, Jeni Curtis, introduced guest speaker and takahē founder, Sandra Arnold, whose anecdotes on the birth of the magazine were both historically intriguing and entertaining. Aotearoa Poet Laureate, David Eggleton, then read three poems: ‘A Week in the Valley’, ‘Dear Reader’, and ‘The Burning Cathedral’ - a moving poem about the fire of Notre Dame. Next to take the stage was local poets James Norcliffe and Bernadette Hall, followed by takahē essay editor, Andrew Woods. Cindy Botham, from Tauranga, read her poignant poem ‘From the Settlers’ Cemetery, Akaroa’, which won the takahē Monica Taylor Poetry Competition Award, 2020. ‘Strike the Pounamu’, a 100-line poem on voices of Aotearoa, was read by takahē poetry editors Gail Ingram, and Jeni. With 84 of our country’s finest poets having contributed lines to the work - such as Vaughan Rapatahana, Sue Wootton, Karen Zelas, Michael Harlow, Siobhan Harvey, Fleur Adcock, Albert Wendt and former poet laureate Elizabeth Smither – it was, indeed, the perfect ending to a poetic night.

buskers delight International border closures have not dimmed the lights on Canterbury’s inimitable Bread & Circus Buskers Festival, which is this year celebrating talented performers from Aotearoa’s own backyard. Until January 31, the vibrant street festival will showcase more than 30 energetic artists and performers at venues across Christchurch.

he line-up includes awardwinning comedians like The Topp Twins and Jarred Fell, cheeky host and acclaimed entertainer Rutene Spooner, cabaret superstar Nomi Cohen, and world-renowned clown Fraser Hooper. Other acts include interactive shows like Blackboard Theatre’s musical quiz show, What the Quiz is this?!, The Biggest Little Circus, a five day workshop for aspiring teen buskers, and a busker-filled brewery tour. Festival Director Scott Maidment says the 2021 lineup is a silver-lining to the disruption of Covid-19, as organisers can help locals rediscover the circus and musical talent here. “The sheer breadth of artists available to us has meant that despite losing the ‘World’ in our title for 2021, we’ve not lost the ‘world-class’ from our programme.” ChristchurchNZ General Manager Destination and Attraction, Loren Heaphy, says: “At a time when cities around the world are struggling to hold public events, Bread & Circus is an epic celebration of arts and culture, and we welcome Kiwis from across the country to Ōtautahi Christchurch to see what the fuss is about.” Browse the programme and find showtimes or buy tickets at www.breadandcircus.co.nz.

Christchurch model Eleni Tsavousis has forged a formidable career in front of the camera. Home from New York for summer, Metropol catches up with the local beauty about a tumultuous year in the Big Apple – and what’s in store for the one to come.

2020, what a year. New York has been in the global spotlight for the impact the Covid-19 pandemic has had on the city. What has it been like living amongst the chaos? “What a year indeed. My partner and I were supposed to have our wedding in April and I had a flight booked home to Christchurch early March to finish my wedding dress with my mum. We ended up staying until July and when we got back to New York it was a ghost town. I walked around Manhattan a few times, which is usually a bustling hub of tourists and business and was shocked to find block after block of homeless encampments. It was a very sobering time.” Not to mention the impact on the fashion industry. We’ve seen a widespread rethink of the notion of frequent seasonal

fashion. What have your observations been about this, and how does it impact your work? What do you think we will see from the industry in 2021? “In my time in the industry, I have become increasingly aware of its problems, and am very pleased to see companies trying to find solutions that are environmentally and socially conscious. But, I think we as consumers also have to take responsibility. We have power and a lot of choice about how we spend. So I really try to take the time to think twice before I buy. Buy less, buy local, up-cycle, recycle, shop at thrift stores, be the hand that forces change. Moving forward I think we are going to see a push for artisan craftsmanship, for localised production and for an understanding of who made what and where.” But now you’re back in New Zealand (and Christchurch)! What did you get up to in your quarantine hotel – and how do you plan to spend the summer? “Home sweet home! I am actually in quarantine as I write this! Shout out to The Sebel Hotel in Manakau! I have been so impressed by the effective and thoughtful way our government has been able to keep NZ safe and still welcome home so many returning New Zealanders. It has made me so proud and grateful to be a Kiwi. On release, I plan to annoy my mum with as many DIY projects as I can get away with, continue my life long saga of trying to get my dad to teach me French, guilt my brother into taking annual leave to hang out with me, catch up with my wonderful whanau and friends and take my husband on his first Kiwi tramp! I smile just thinking about it.” And what does 2021 have in store for you? “2020 was definitely a lesson in impermanence and being flexible with what the world delivers to us. I feel so lucky we have come through unscathed relative to so many we know and many we don’t. Honestly, I don’t know what my future holds; for now I’m looking forward to having a few months at home with my family and working with amazing creative Kiwis!”

Tell us a bit about your upbringing in Christchurch and how this led to your modelling career? “I was born in Christchurch, but then spent my childhood years in Nassau in the Bahamas. At 13, we all moved back to NZ and I started to hear more about how my mum and aunt had worked in the industry, but I can’t say I ever thought about it as a career for me. When I was 15 I got approached a few times. I didn’t pursue either advance, but a year or so later a friend of my mum’s, Sharon Ng, asked me to do a shoot for her. I remember feeling super embarrassed, but also flattered to be considered for her beautiful work, so I said yes and we shared a lovely (freezing) winter’s day shooting in the Port Hills. After that I walked for her in a show and then started working more regularly. It’s been a pretty incredible ride and the industry has given me so much. I’ve been working for more than 15 years now and I am so grateful for the gift of being able to live and work around the world. It’s taken me to live in Australia, Hamburg, Berlin, London, South Africa, Los Angeles and New York. I get to meet new people in new places every day for work which I love. I’m truly so grateful for it and how it has shaped my life.”

Sitting on a bar stool surrounded by beautiful oak paneling, stained glass windows and traditional liquor advertising, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in a well-established pub in Ireland. T.Oloughlin’s however is in a suburban street in Ōtautahi Christchurch – sitting in front of a swimming pool in a leafy backyard.

M

easuring 4.2 by 2.8m this is a bespoke “Paddy’s Bar” designed and built by My Little Pub Company, the brainchild of local commercial designer Steve Rosling. My Little Pub was born out of a request from a mate during the Covid-19 lockdown. It’s no surprise he asked Steve, who

as founder of Element 17 has designed a number of iconic spaces, including Lumière Cinemas, Queenstown’s Pub on Wharf, Ferg’s Bar, and dozens of hospitality venues nationally over the years. Gazing around the small but perfectly formed pub, no detail has been missed, right down

to the black and white family photos of great grandparents, and carefully curated Irish memorabilia. “You know you’re in a great Irish pub when it feels like you’ve popped into someone’s living room to share a pint,” says Steve. “It’s a genuine intimate pub

experience. Before you know it, you’re sharing pints or a whiskey and some quality craic. It’s not just about the beer, it’s about recreating the environment and culture of the pub and the sanctuary it provides.” My Little Pub is not just little Irish pubs – there’s also The Pom which brings the best of British to your place, The Local which is quintessentially Kiwi, or let your imagination run riot with Flash Harry. With the uncertainty of Covid-19 still hovering over the country, a pint-sized pub in your own backyard could be just the answer to a great night out (but in). Check it out at mylittlepub.co.nz.

Q: How much industry specific knowledge do I need before buying a business? A: Industry-specific knowledge may not be as essential

when buying a business as general business knowledge. Often when purchasing a business, you take over staff who have specific industry knowledge, and you can “piggy-back” on that knowledge. Good general knowledge of business can be applied over a wide range of businesses and can provide real advantage to a purchaser, who can then learn specific knowledge while settling in to the new business.

“They will get your teeth straight in a shorter timeframe. Quite often from three to 12 months and in a lot of cases as little as six months. They are often cheaper than conventional braces and less painful.”

Aptly named Fastbraces, the trending teeth correctors promise to make braces a fast paced process. Metropol caught up with Dr Anthony Wood of Bradley Wood Dentist in Merivale to answer some common questions about the innovative approach.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FASTBRACES AND CONVENTIONAL BRACES? “Both use brackets and wires and will move your teeth into new and better positions in the end. Either way, you get a healthier, better-looking smile. One difference is that Fastbraces use special triangular brackets. This affects the forces exerted by the arch wire as well as using the flexibility of the wire. With Fastbraces, the crowns and the roots of your teeth can be moved at the same time. This is what has the most dramatic effect on the total time required to get the job done.”

WILL I NEED TO WEAR RETAINERS? “With the complete alignment of the roots of the teeth, retention is needed every day. The most common reason is to help your teeth stay set in their new positions after wearing braces. It’s important to wear your retainer because as your body grows, your teeth do some shifting.” Phone (03) 355 7890, email info@bradleywood.co.nz or book online for a free consultation with Dr Anthony Wood. www.bradleywooddentists.co.nz

YEAR-ROUND SNOW:

Beauty and skincare expert Lauren O’Connell, known as The Ingredients Queen, raves about the hydrating effects of the snow mushroom (Tremella Fuciformis). She also mentions that it improves skin’s elasticity and with continual use can give you that glowing goodness. You can find a Snow Mushroom Water Serum by Volition Beauty at Mecca.

BEAUTY BLOCK BABY:

The secret ingredient WORDS JESS MURRAY

Clever marketing or trendy packaging may draw your eye when browsing for makeup but it’s the back or bottom of the label that holds the most critical information. With skincare skyrocketing in popularity and options becoming endless, it’s important for consumers to know what ingredients they’re putting on or in their body, here’s what the experts say to look out for, ingredient-wise, in 2021.

Tranexamic acid is yet to be a topical skincare ingredient, but rumour has it that 2021 is going to be its year. Dr Preema London Clinic’s medical director Dr Preema Vig says the ingredient “reduces skin discolouration and evens pigmentation, it also targets photo damage, brightens the skin and improves fine lines and wrinkles.”

TIME TO SLIME: Snail mucin, aka snail slime, has loped into the skincare vernacular recently. In 2021, it’s emerging as the hot ingredient for hydrators everywhere, especially face creams. Dermatologist Dr Hadley King, of New York’s Skinney Medspa, says snail mucin’s makeup includes glycoproteins, hyaluronic acid and glycolic acid – all of which have long-documented benefits for the skin.

50 shades of silver When it comes to embracing the grey, there really is something for everyone, it’s a natural process but it does not have to be a gruelling one. When teamed with a precision cut, the result is transformative explains V for Hair and Beauty Master Stylist Vicki Ogden-O’Fee.

“J

ust because you have silver hair coming in and you want to go grey gracefully doesn’t mean it has to be a silver colour,” she says. “We help you discover if you are warm or cool based in hair, skin and eyes, and from there we help you decide the best look for you.” While those with a warm base suit silver hair with soft champagne, sandy iris, strawberry beige, or translucent butterscotch tones, those with a cool base suit silver dove, champagne lilac or platinum iris. “Getting your colour undertone is so important and when this is done right it gives your face an instant brightening, lift and can take years off,” Vicki says. “Get it wrong and you will feel drab and look drained and older… consultation is key!”

Managing bowel cancer risk New Zealand has one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world affecting one in eighteen Kiwis every year. Gastrointestinal surgeon, Mr Ross Roberts of The Endoscopy Clinic in Christchurch says the risk can be reduced. Metropol spoke to Ross Roberts to find out more about reducing the risk of succumbing to the condition. WHAT STEPS CAN PEOPLE TAKE TO REDUCE THE RISK OF BOWEL CANCER? “The good news is that there is a high chance of cure from bowel cancer if it is detected early. People can be proactive about reducing risk. Prevention is much better than cure and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key. There is a list of ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ around lifestyle choices – things you should do more of and things you should do less of.”

WHAT SHOULD WE BE DOING MORE OF? “This is all to do with risk reduction, not risk elimination. So maintaining a high level of physical exercise is important, up to 30 minutes a day. Eat plenty of fibre rich food and wholegrains. Aim to eat at least five portions a day of fruit and vegetables. Drink plenty of water.”

WHAT SHOULD WE BE DOING LESS OF? “Avoid excess weight, preferably by increasing physical activity. Eat less food containing sugars and products with white flour or high in animal fats. In particular eat

less of preserved meats such as ham and salami. Drink fewer than three glasses of wine or beer a day. Do not smoke.”

WHAT OTHER MEASURES CAN PEOPLE TAKE? “Be aware of family history. Having close relatives who have developed bowel cancer increases the risk. Also be aware of the common signs and symptoms of bowel cancer - changes in the normal pattern of going to the toilet that continue for several weeks (such as diarrhoea, constipation, or a feeling that your bowel doesn’t empty completely), blood in your bowel motion, tiredness and weight loss.”

WHAT ABOUT SCREENING? “Yes, the best prevention is screening to detect any pre-cancerous changes in the bowel. The most effective form of screening is a colonoscopy. Government funded screening was introduced to Christchurch late in 2020. Learn to consider bowel screening in the same way as we are accustomed to regard mammograms.”

If you think you or a member of your family may have the symptoms of bowel cancer or if your GP says you need screening, a referral to The Endoscopy Clinic can give you peace of mind. Phone (03) 961 6666 or fill out a referral form online. www.endoscopyclinic.co.nz Metropol 21 January, 2021 29

The tipple effect WORDS JESS MURRAY

Late summer is the perfect time to whip out all the refreshing cocktail concoctions many mastered during the infamous lockdown. Whether you need a refresher or additional recipes to add to your repertoire, Metropol has collated cocktails of choice so you can sip away the last of the long, warm summer days.

PIMM’S CUP The Mix’s recipe for this classic is quick, easy and serves 10 people – awesome for those barbeques and catchups. It only requires 500ml of Pimm’s, 1L of both lemonade and ginger ale, fresh cucumber, mint and seasonal fruit. There’s no real art to putting this together, as you simply do just that… put it all together. Serve in a glass bowl or dispenser for added pizzaz.

LEMON AND ORANGE SANGRIA

THE BEACHY KEEN

Nadia Lim comes to the rescue (again) with a delectable recipe for traditional sangria. It calls for one bottle of Spanish red wine; 400 to 500ml of dry lemonade; 1½ cups of orange juice; 1/2 lemon, juiced; one orange and lemon both sliced; and lots of ice cubes. Lim suggests letting the mixture sit in the fridge so the flavours can meld together, before adding the ice.

Liquor King tingle our tastebuds with this fruity mix with a kick. You will just need 30ml of vodka, 15ml passionfruit syrup, ½ cup canned peaches, 20ml lemon juice, 30ml orange juice, ice and fresh mint. Throw all of your ingredients into a blender and hit go. Garnish with mint, enjoy your cocktail for one... and maybe four or five more after that.

Tastes so good you don’t need sauce!

E

nter Bangers ‘N’ Bacon, local purveyors of quality sausages that are all-meat filled in natural hog casing, with no fillers or preservatives. No matter how quality your sanger, many a beautiful sausage is ruined on the summer BBQ by well-meaning cooks who don’t understand the finesse and expertise required to cook a perfect banger. Here are Bangers ‘N’ Bacon’s hot tips to get the best possible snag this summer (and beyond):

NO PRICKS Quality sausages do not need to be pricked, if you do you will lose the flavours in the sausage such as those in the Mild Italian Pork & Beef Sausage.

NOT TOO COOL A sausage should be at room temperature before cooking so take it out of the fridge 20 minutes before. This allows it to cook evenly.

AND NOT TOO HOT!

Sausage aficionados appreciate a perfectly cooked snag on a summer BBQ. For those who suffer from food intolerances, having a sausage that is gluten, wheat, dairy, soy and nightshade free with no added preservatives, stabilisers, MSG or flavour enhancers – is the ultimate summer BBQ staple.

Regrettably, a lot of BBQs only have two temperature settings: high and very high. This means the sausages will often be burnt and crispy on the outside but end up undercooked on the inside. Cooking over medium heat is best. Find more info or purchase our sausages online.

No ordinary café Artistic sweet pastries and (almost) too good looking to eat handcrafted chocolates sit alongside an exceptional menu and cabinet food offerings at Good Street Deli.

T

ucked inside the Opus Building on Moorhouse Avenue, new owners have reinvigorated the eatery - offering a creative high tea and have just introduced a $10 weekend breakfast and $13.99 lunch menu. Using prestigious brand, Callebaut, head chef Edwin Peng produces beautiful, handcrafted chocolates. Mouth-watering natural flavours from real ingredients include sea salt, berry, Earl Grey, coffee, whisky and more – all hand painted in stunning glossy finishes. The galaxy finish is noteworthy; its glittery swirl notoriously hard to create. Edwin makes the treats weekly, but once purchased can be stored at room temperature for up to three months, making them great for gifts or special occasions. The high tea further showcases Edwin’s skills as a Shanghai-trained pastry chef who has

worked for the Heritage Hotel in Queenstown and Waipuna Hotel in Auckland. Featuring sweet treats like artistic lemon white chocolate mousse cakes disguised as a fresh yellow lemon complete with green stalk and leaf, and a dark chocolate mousse cake as a delicate red rose. Savoury items include premium seafood and beautiful sandwiches, pastries, and scones. Elsewhere on the café menu, breakfast include pancakes, French toast, smashed avo and an omelette, with lunch featuring a Karaage chicken burger, meatball pasta, pork cutlet curry – and a suite of salads, sandwiches and other cabinet goodies including a very popular spinach and cream cheese scone. Open Monday to Friday, 7am to 3pm and 9am to 3pm on weekends.

Delicious duo

Only one hour from Christchurch, one ninety nine is a café and espresso bar that’s tucked into an alleyway at 199 Burnett Street, Ashburton.

e’ve been told there’s a definite Wellington and Wanaka vibe going on here, so that speaks volumes,” says owners Gareth and Jamie Cadogan. Gareth and wife Jamie have worked in the hospitality industry for the past 17 years; they ran cafes in Oamaru before opening one ninety nine in July 2020. A personal, hands-on service is paramount to this hard-working couple; apart from one other staff member, it’s Gareth and Jamie manning the cabinets and counter, preparing menu food, pouring espressos, and making the delicious, locally sourced food onsite. “One ninety nine was born from a love of outstanding coffee, amazing food and a passion for hospitality,” says Gareth. Catering is another major component to the business – from corporate events, workplace morning or afternoon teas, a special anniversary celebration or Christmas function, nothing is considered too big or too small. There’s even a dedicated family space. “As the parents of

four kids ourselves, we know how great it feels to enjoy five minutes with a coffee and delicious food, and let kids be kids with zero worries!” Check out the café on Instagram @oneninetynine.cafe, phone (03) 307 7477 or email oneninetyninecafe@gmail.com. www.facebook.com/oneninetynine.cafe

Bedside manner WORDS MELINDA COLLINS

The ultimate organiser ensuring everything you need is at arm’s reach, bedside tables combine both form and function.

W

hether you like to let it all hang out with an open design or tuck it all away with a drawer, there’s an option for everyone and choosing the right design can play an important role when it comes to your comfort and wellbeing. First things first, bedside tables have traditionally been purchased in pairs. But that’s no longer the case. Choosing two different designs or simply just having one bedside table is a great way to express your creativity and mix things up. As with all your furniture, it’s important for your bedside tables to vibe with your overall theme, whether it’s ultra-modern,

rustic or somewhere in between. The laws of feng shui dictates a preference for soft or rounded corners and these curved options are becoming increasingly popular, creating a softer vibe in this space. Timber tables, with their natural vibes, are a strong antidote to our techheavy lifestyles, creating a calming effect that we’re craving right now, while whites and greens offer another option to satisfy the senses. Meanwhile, designers are expecting bedside tables devoid of legs and bases to have a serious moment in 2021, attached instead directly to the wall to create a floating effect.

Divide & conquer WORDS MELINDA COLLINS

From free-flowing spaces to cosy, intimate zones, it seems we’re closing the door on open plan living as we look to the home trends ahead of us.

I

nterior design inspiration behemoth, Pinterest, is hailing “more door” as one of the next biggest trends to hit the home in 2021 and beyond, with the art of sectioning off your house plans – or in the very least, utilising dividers and partitions to create intimate spaces – the talk of the interior design world this year. Because open plan spaces are bright, airy, inviting, great for entertaining, encourage family togetherness and offer endless design opportunities, they come too

with a number of downsides – little privacy, a lack of clearly defined zones and a large space that can feel overwhelming. However, dividing a room, either visually or physically, is the perfect antidote, creating smaller, more intimate and functional zones. The best part? If you’re not starting from scratch, you don’t need to build permanent walls that may disturb the flow and feel of your space. We’ve pulled together four easy ways to divide and conquer.

RUGGED UP Area rugs are a great way to clearly define zones, such as a dining area. The lack of permanence with this option means you can change things up when you want to update the vibe.

SAVVY STORAGE An open bookcase or shelving unit is a quick and easy way to create distinct zones within your living area, without having to permanently close off your space – an option which is both fabulous and functional!

ON A ROLL Wallpaper is the ultimate way to create visual boundaries, creating separation between a TV space, a reading nook and a dining area. Just make sure you support these spaces with furniture and art placement.

SCREEN TIME A privacy screen or room divider offers a space-savvy solution if you want a physical room divider that’s not fixed and easy to move. Some modern options are designed to be fixed from the ceiling.

ummer is undoubtedly the season most associated with deck living; as homebodies embrace the outdoors in the warmer temperatures and longer days. Even as day turns to night, the deck is often a place spent talking and laughing the night away. As design and technology advances across building materials, furniture and appliances, outdoor areas have evolved from seasonal retreats into year-round habitats which add another living space to the home. Retractable louvre systems provide an optional roof for protection from the elements; gas heating and fire pits create practical ambience, and outdoor kitchens go beyond a simple BBQ to include fridges, pizza ovens and benchtops. Outdoor furniture constructed in durable materials and fabrics creates lounge-worthy spaces, which can even be finished with outdoor rugs and outdoor televisions.

Tips for taking your deck to the next level IN AND OUT: The comforts of lounge and dining areas are no longer confined indoors. Many brands create stylish furniture and appliances especially for outdoor living; built to withstand the elements, without compromising your aesthetic.

ENTERTAINMENT PLUS: Electronics are also being designed to keep up to speed with outdoor living. Especially designed outdoor televisions and sounds systems ensure you can listen to music or watch that unmissable sports match unhindered by the elements.

IN THE KITCHEN: Full-spec outdoor kitchens are growing in popularity, as consumers want to take both the dinner party and the prep outdoors. Multifunctional barbecues capable of creating a full size feast come in contemporary designs, as do pizza ovens and outdoor fridges.

A pop of optimism. Desino Yellow Dotted Citrus Poster

2021 in colour WORDS MORGAN TAIT

Each December, the design world turns its attention to one announcement: The Pantone Colour of the Year. For just the second time in its 22 year history, two colours were selected as the hues which will define the year ahead - Ultimate Gray and Illuminating, a vivacious yellow.

P

antone says the colours for 2021 are opposing, yet complimentary – signalling a theme of unity and mutual support which reflects the year which has been, and the one to come. While grey is solid and dependable, yellow is

optimistic and bright. Together, these colours symbolise comfort, hope and fortitude, and this is Metropol’s take on how you can incorporate the shades (and their meanings) into your abode this year, and beyond.

Better than new Sustainability has grown in popularity as a business buzzword in recent times, but Christchurch surface and kitchen renewal wizards MF Turnbull have been living reuse, repair and recycle ethos for more than three decades.

E

xperts in paint, stain, polyurethane and polished finishes on furniture and joinery, there is very little in the home that Monique and Murray Turnbull and their team cannot regenerate. And because they were doing it before it was fashionable, they are ahead of the design curve – serving up stylish projects which makeover any home. “We’ve always been a cost-effective option for making fittings and furniture new again, but now more and more people are also considering how to get what they want with less impact on the environment,” says Monique. The longstanding company has been working to further enhance its green credentials, working with suppliers to start phasing out solvent-based products in favour of waterborne applications.

“By changing the colour, you get to reuse and so reduce waste going to landfill and energy used in manufacturing new,” she says. “We find that many kitchens are already well laid out and some are kitchens by name designers. These often only need minor alterations such as changing a cupboard to drawers, removing or replacing cupboards over fridge, microwave areas or oven surrounds.” Murray says business has surged since lockdown, as many people considered what improvement they’d like to make in their homes after spending so much time there. “We can recolour any type of surface that manufacturers can make. Even doors where the plastic coating is breaking down, we can remove the coating and apply

the colour you want to the underlying substrate. “A refinish is also an easy way to refresh the kitchen if you are looking to sell, or if you have just moved in and are looking to make your new home feel like you.” The team of 22, which now operates across three Christchurch sites, also rejuvenates bedroom and dining furniture, doors, wardrobe doors, anything in your house that might be spray painted. They can also do French polishing of antiques and the modern equivalent – staining and clears in polyurethane. The store at 46 Mowbray Street, Waltham is open 7:30am to 4pm weekdays with easy parking at the front door. Or, send your enquiry with photos through the website or to info@mfturnbull.co.nz and they can give you an estimate or call them to discuss.

Considered design for maximum living Twin companies Ōtākaro Design and Build and Ngātahi Real Estate are proud to call Canterbury home. Firmly grounded in Ōtāutahi Christchurch and with a love of beautiful real estate, the homes built by Ōtākaro as well as their house and land packages, are then marketed exclusively by Ngātahi Real Estate.

“W

e aim to show clients how good it is to buy a new home. We believe people like the link we emphasise about our nation’s roots, about what New Zealand really is,” says Hayden McKenzie, Manager at Ngātahi. At Ōtākaro Design and Build, co-owners Calvin Kent and Kian Clements-Ormond work side by side to create the ultimate home building experience for their clients. “Calvin directs the construction side of the business,” says Kian. “While I oversee both design and sales.” So attractive to buyers have

Ōtākaro’s homes proved, that the company has over thirty houses either already under construction or about to be built. “If you don’t design liveable, workable spaces, houses will not sell,” says Kian. “We are relatively new to the market, but it was clear from the beginning what our clients wanted in their new homes. In particular, that’s spacious open plan living designed for the sun that seamlessly flows to the outdoors.” In keeping with the company’s distinctive brand and Kian’s own tribal links, each house

design has a significant Māori name. Tamahine (daughter), Tīmatanga (beginning), Pīwari (to be beautiful), and Tuahine (sisterhood) are just some special examples. Clients are free to make changes to the designs to suit their individual lifestyles or they can create a new design at no extra cost. The use of natural materials – timber and stone – is a constant feature across many of Ōtākaro’s designs, as is their strong connection to the land they are sited on. The company’s show home in Marshlands, open by appointment, is a stunning

example of this design philosophy with its cedar and schist exterior cladding, the use of timber internally for ceilings and doors, as well as granite benchtops in the kitchen, laundry and bathrooms. Stylish botanical-themed wallpapers complete the look in the living areas and bedrooms: The total effect is spectacular. Meanwhile at Ngātahi Real Estate, Hayden says the overarching philosophy is to bring about togetherness throughout the whole buying and selling process. “We are constantly asking the key questions: what do agents want, what do vendors and purchasers want? This is real estate that’s totally local and connected to New Zealand. “Clients feel as if they are part of the family, not just another number in a real estate deal to be quickly expedited.” “We established our two companies to bring beautiful real estate to people in a seamless way,” says Kian. “Our clients love what we have done, and we are excited about the prospects for 2021 and beyond.”

What’s your story?

ncorporating a mix of decorative styles from different eras is one of the tricks of the trade for professional designers, but that does not mean you need to spend a stack of cash. Decorating with reproductions, hand-me-downs, or a few vintage finds will give a room some stylish oomph without bankrupting your budget. You can always give these items a coat of Resene paint to refresh their finish and tie them directly into your colour palette. While the palette and textures in this space may have a strong nod to nostalgia, they’ve been spun in a way that feels much more contemporary than retro. Popular pastels of yesteryear have now been updated with muddier tones. The wall in Resene Duck Egg Blue has been given a soft ’80s-esque texture using Resene FX Paint Effects medium with Resene Rolling Stone while the sideboard in Resene Inside Back both coordinates and contrasts. The ’80s revival dining chairs combined with contemporary furniture forms, like the dining table and the sideboard, seal the look – but it’s the crisp Resene Half Orchid White dome pendant lamp, Resene Half Villa White floor and accessories in Resene Kalgoorie Sands, Resene Moccaccino and Resene Wedgewood that make this room really work. While it can be tempting to keep your walls clean and simple in white, Resene Duck Egg Blue is the next best thing. It’s about as classic a colour as you can get, but it pairs well with a wide range of retro styles.

Late summer in the garden As we near February, our gardening philosophies turn to the tail end of summer, and, for some organised green thumbs, even preparing for winter. Here are Metropol’s tips for late summer in the garden. WATERING

FLOWERING

EATING

And weeding, mulching and feeding should be top of the topiary to-do list at the moment. Water deeply and regularly with the aide of mulch to hold the moisture in the soil and prevent those pesky weeds from reigning free.

Pick those flowering roses, dead head old flowers and spray to protect against nasties. It’s also time to start planting early summer bulbs like tulips, daffodils and anemone from now until autumn. Staggering your planting will mean continuous floral displays through spring.

Filling your fruit bowl and vege drawer each day with the bounty from your edible garden is a tasty way to encourage late fruiting. Don’t stop planting lettuce and herbs, but unless you have a greenhouse you’ll need to give the softer, fleshier vegetables a miss. You can start preparing your winter vege garden, too.

Award-winning Architype At Farmers’ Corner, a tourist focused retail and restaurant business just outside of Ashburton, the owners decided to commission a new bathroom facility outside the main complex. They briefed Architype to create a unique “experience-centred bathroom facility,” and just like that, visiting the restroom was never the same again.

D

irector of Architype Tim Ross and his team delivered a New Zealand Institute of Architects award-winning pavilion which connects visitors to its rural landscape, and you can see why the judges just couldn’t go past this audacious, original, and downright breath-taking structure. The pavilion is constructed of a lattice of timber framing supporting a faceted glass roof. The timber structural grid is supported on a series of Oamaru sandstone fins which provide the divisions for the bathrooms and form the central open area. Located on the entry axis of

the main building, the axis continues right through the centre of the pavilion and leads the eye out into the landscape. Either side of the central axis, the pavilion is divided into private bathroom modules looking through full height fritted glass to the fields beyond. “We knew this location required something special,” says Tim. “And we are thrilled our clients’ vision for a bathroom beyond the norm allowed us to create something that we believe will be wowing visitors for decades to come.”

The BMW 340i xDrive was my second to last test drive of the year and boy did they leave the best ‘til (second to) last.

It just becomes everything you want in a car: Power, performance and beauty personified. You keep winning my heart, BMW.

The Subaru Forester is a great SUV, and of the few soft roaders to actually do well on the rough stuff. Now, along with the XV, the Forester has gone Hybrid: Let’s see how it stacks up.

he range consists of the E Boxer Sport, and the flagship E Boxer Premium featured here. The Sport kicks it off at $47,990, while the premium is $54,990. Both get the same 2L Boxer four-cylinder engine with 110kW and 196Nm of torque. This is mated to Subaru’s SLT transmission and of course, all-wheel drive. Levels of kit are generous with heated door mirrors, steering responsive headlights, dual zone aircon, hill start assist, Rear Autonomous Braking, blind spot monitoring, keyless entry, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You also get Subaru’s latest gen Eyesight safety technology. This contains autonomous braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, tyre pressure monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, high beam assist, and lane change assist. The Premium also gets additional niceties like power boot, swish looking 18-inch alloys, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, premium Harmon/ Kardon sound system, heated electric seats with leather trim and Subaru’s Driver Monitoring System. You do sit quite high and everything is within easy reach. The interior itself is one of the Foresters biggest assets, as there is a tonne of space for driver and passengers. The same can be said of boot space, which at 345L is nothing to be sniffed at.

While there is no shortage of power when getting up to speed, it’s the Hybrid system which falls short. At 6.7L/100km, it is thirstier than we were first expecting when compared to its rivals. Also, Electric drive only really comes into play when you are stationary or easing off. When you get going from a standstill, rather than a conventional hybrid system which stays in EV mode until it reaches a certain cruising speed, the petrol engine takes over instantly. You can be as soft as you like on the gas, but the petrol engine starts pretty much from the get go, which is kind of annoying in a Hybrid. On the plus side, ride comfort is very supple and comfortable. When electric and petrol power are working together, performance is decent, and like its petrol counterpart, you can still have plenty of joyous off-road frivolity thanks to Subaru’s X-Mode. With X-Mode in Snow/ Dirt or Snow/Mud, not that there was any snow to devour, the Forester can still take it all in its stride with relative ease. While the Subaru Forester E Boxer Hybrid is very competent off the beaten track, the price premium isn’t worth the minimal gains in economy. Don’t get me wrong, the Forester in its regular petrol-powered guise is still a great car and well worth your time, but if you are after a Hybrid, there are better options out there.

A

n iconic brand loved with a passion by their owners, the stoic love of Britain is emblazoned almost everywhere you look with Mini. On the Mini electric it’s the rear taillights, but on several I’ve seen, the whole roof is the good ol’ Union Jack. The difference permeates the interior also, those round shape finishings even go to the door handles which confused more than one passenger I took for a drive; is it a door opener or a heating vent? There are cool sunroof controls and a HiFi Harmon Kardon system that rocks your favourite drive tunes. But what about that all important drive? It has three drive modes; sport, normal and green mode. Sport is just a whole lot of vroom, winding down to green mode which is the most economic use of the battery life. I quite liked this mode as I used it as a form of braking for corners and tight turns while at the same time replenishing the battery. $59,900 plus ORC makes this a remarkably interesting option for anyone wanting an electric vehicle with bling. You really can bespoke it to make it your own. And that is what I noticed a lot while driving - every Mini I saw was different. Just the way its owner wanted it. How much fun is that? Which is exactly what this car was for me: Fun to drive, fun to take people out in, fun to look at. Selena Andreassend at Mini on Moorhouse Avenue walked me round the car to show me a few features. What was really cute, was the wheel rims are shaped like a three-point plug. So is the charging port cover - and I’m very happy to inform you it charges through a standard garage plug overnight. It has a 233km range which gives you plenty of opportunity to recharge during the day and there’s no stress with, “Uh oh! I’m low on charge!” like I’ve had on other electric vehicles.

Series one is already sold out and series two sounds like it’s going to be just as popular. The electric wave is sweeping the industry and what a wonderful addition to the Mini fleet. Zero to 100 in 7.3 (it felt much faster than that but who am I to argue), 135kW and 270Nm. Overall Mini hasn’t sacrificed anything on its conversion to electric, if anything it’s better than it was before. I was worried about losing what Mini is as a brand. I shouldn’t have been. This is the best Mini ever!

Zero to 100 in 6.7 seconds, four cylinders providing 165kW and 350Nm of torque with 4matic all-wheel drive. That means you can do a bit of tough terrain, but I still don’t know if I’d throw my dive gear in it and hit the beach. Now, it’s a simple thing I’ve seen a lot

last year, but I love the panoramic sunroof. The interior has the AMG (Mercedes’ high performance range) highlights; LCD lighting and leather seating that is just that little bit plusher. For $92,170 plus ORC, that luxurious interior says oh so much. I must admit, it felt like I’ve driven this car before, as Mercedes pulled a few SUVs out in 2020 and they feel a bit the same, but things like the EQC electric comes in

at $150,000 so this price point could be attractive to those looking for a Merc SUV. It really is about going down to Armstrong and finding the Mercedes that fits you. All models can be added to, it’s just about what you want. AMG always spells excellence in my book and this is no different. The Germans just do luxury well, but I guess they have had 94 years in the industry to get that right.

WATER KING OF THE

William King’s passion for boats started at an early age. Inspired by his grandfather’s naval career and round the world sailing expedition, at age 12, he put pencil to paper to design his first boat - a plywood dinghy.

ith his father’s encouragement, he set about building it himself at the coastal family farm at Clarence River, in Marlborough. His continued interest led him to study architectural design to further develop his technical design skills, and on completion, his love for the marine industry gave him the confidence to start his own business, King Watercraft. He has spent a number of years developing rib (rigid inflatable boat) prototypes, each one taking him a step further in perfecting his designs and reputation for high quality, New Zealand-made tenders. Today, King Watercraft manufactures jet and outboard ribs of bespoke design, and build high end tenders for recreational yachting and family fun on the water. “King Watercraft give full interest and involvement to every client, to ensure their specifications are completely met in the design and build of their rib. Our business is about producing quality, not quantity,” says William.

Stress less, shine more A vehicle is often someone’s prized possession and it can be very distressing when it is damaged. Helping to take the stress out of dealing with this kind of situation are the panelbeating experts at RO Jones Panelbeaters.

t is really important for customers’ peace of mind for them to have confidence in their panelbeater’s workmanship,” says Karl Stohr of RO Jones. “It’s their vehicle and their choice of repairer. We have a long history of producing quality repairs from minor rust issues to major smash repairs. Exemplary customer service is also paramount for us.” RO Jones does indeed go the extra mile. The company has thirteen loan cars available free of charge to keep customers on the road while repairs are being carried out. There is even a loan van which is very handy for tradies and couriers. Before being returned to its owner each impeccablyrepaired vehicle is washed and fully groomed, including a shining of its tyres. All the products used are eco-friendly, from the water-based paints to the cleaning products and polishes. RO Jones workshop has been a landmark in the central city for some 30 years and has capacity to handle a large number of vehicles. “We are conveniently located on St Asaph Street near Montreal, just pull into our driveway and we can assess your vehicle straightaway.”

Any colour you want... as long as it's green RO Jones Panelbeaters only use water-based paint, imported from Germany, environmentally friendly carwash and polish throughout the shop. We repair electric vehicles, campervans, caravans, boats, truck cabs, fleet maintenance and more. From private work at competitive rates through to work for all the major insurance companies.
