2013 - 2019
In case you hadn’t noticed, it is spring. The blossoms are here (and, so too, are the associated photos), daylight saving has arrived, and the temperatures are creeping up. As cliché as it may be, there really is nothing quite like the invigorating energy and possibility of spring. It is hard not to feel motivated by the extra daylight hours and balmier weather to act on ideas which might have been brewing over the colder months. Psychologists and philosophers alike put these feelings of seasonal inspiration down to what’s occurring in nature. What seem like such external factors actually deeply impact our internal systems: from neurotransmitters in the brain to our metabolism and hormone balances – we’re biologically built to be more energised in spring. And it is this powerful force of change which has inspired our cover this fortnight, from Kiwi designer Mahsa Willis’ latest collection, Enduring Nature. Her designs speak to the resilience and beauty of nature through change and catastrophe; adapting and renewing in the face of endless challenge. Like Mahsa tells Metropol on page 16, as part of nature, we too, will endure and thrive in these extraordinary times. So, whether that is tackling some jobs around the house, kickstarting a new exercise regime, or something much bigger; there’s no better time to make like nature and harness some spring fever to set yourself up for a satisfying summer.

The power of positivity WORDS CÉLINE GIBSON
Sometimes all it takes is a friendly prod to get those projects started that, for some reason, we haven’t quite got around to. Christchurch author and, now, podcaster Rebecca Simons had just such a friend, and thanks to her, Rebecca stopped procrastinating.
M
y friend kept reminding me I had the knowledge, expertise and skills and it was time I shared my life experiences to a wider audience. After some research on podcasting, I jumped right in and recorded my first show.” Blind Girl Drunk first aired on January 8 last year, and since then Rebecca has recorded over 70 shows with over 1500 people downloading the programme to date. Rebecca has Stargardt Macular Dystrophy, an eye disease which causes progressive damage — or degeneration — of the macula, a small area in the centre of the retina that is responsible for sharp, straight-ahead vision. Experts estimate that one in 8-10 thousand people have Stargardt disease. Stargardt manifested towards the end of Rebecca’s primary school years. Her sight had deteriorated to the point that she could no longer read the blackboard and she had developed night blindness. Coming to terms with what would be her new normal was no easy thing for a teenager, but never one to be defined by her condition, Rebecca used what good sight remained and embarked on her OE. On her return, she worked for a government department; she gained her Bachelor of Arts in Humanities, majoring in German; and she studied French and Spanish, the latter of which she speaks fluently.

Rebecca says the major driving factor in making Blind Girl Drunk was her desire to be not just a contemporary voice but also an alternative voice for the blind and low vision community. “I wanted to share how the onset of low vision impacted me from my teen years right through to my experiences today, as a forty-something woman.” Rebecca says her show is to help educate sighted people on how best to deal with family or friends with blind or low vision, and to keep fellow blind and low vision people on top of things. “We must keep up with the ever changing technological and practical things happening, so we don’t get lost in it.” January 2021 sees Rebecca celebrating the first birthday of Blind Girl Drunk, as well as her other podcast The Kiwi English Down Under. Of BGD, she says that in voicing her experiences and validating them, it’s made her more mindful in dealing with everyday life. “By carrying a cane, I’m representing blind and low vision people, and I’m doing my best to bring a wider understanding to everyone in the community. It’s really all about spreading my truth with a positive mindset!” Listen to Blind Girl Drunk podcast on Podbean, Apple podcasts and Spotify.

Fionna Heiton could be Christchurch’s very own Julia Roberts. ur main character came to a crossroads in her life and, having always loved exploring the Port Hills, wanted to escape and explore the world’s most famous mountainous region: The Himalayas. So, in 1998 the English as a Second Language teacher packed up her rental cottage on Kilmore Street and set off for Nepal. It was there in Kathmandu, within a few days of arriving, that she met her love interest, Durga Aran, while working for British charity Water Aid. Fast-forward to 2001, the pair were raising their twin toddlers Rhona and Jamie – when the parents became troubled to learn about the Nepali school system. In 2001, the mean years of schooling for the country’s 24 million people was just 2.5, according to UN data. In comparison, the mean years of schooling for New Zealanders was 11.5. “Hundreds of thousands of children across Nepal spend their days in dark, dirty, empty classrooms, taught by poorly trained and demotivated teachers,” says Fionna. This was the motive that brings us to the climax of the story – the first steps. The family travelled to the village area where Durga was raised, in between Kathmandu and the Tibet border, with the goal of creating a quality early childhood centre. “We borrowed a jeep and drove up to the remote hillside village each day. Our days were long, hot and dusty,” remembers Fionna. “But the need was so clear and we knew that simple activities and changes could make a world of difference for the children.” Thus, First Steps Himalaya was founded, a charity that has been making a difference in transforming lives and working on the ground in
But the need was so clear and we knew that simple activities and changes could make a world of difference for the children.
Nepal for over 10 years. “With the help of generous donors, classrooms are developed from dirt floors to carpet. Rooms are cleaned and painted. Wooden pallets for seating are replaced with low tables suited to young children. Most rural Nepali early childhood classrooms start with only a single chalkboard, but after being refurbished by the charity, the children have access to crayons, paper, books and quality, culturally appropriate learning resources.” Having built a teacher-training centre in 2015, the team now run effective, hands-on teacher training courses across Nepal, empowering rural teachers to create simple, engaging lessons. After learning how to make resources from things they can find in their village, teachers can then transform their own classrooms into safe and stimulating learning environments. “We strongly believe the key to bringing about positive change in rural Nepali schools is the quality of the teaching,” says Fionna. Recently returning to Christchurch, after a period in Nelson, reruns of the past came flooding back to our protagonist. “I am so grateful for all the support we have had from friends in Christchurch, the rest of New Zealand and around the world. There is such a massive need in Nepal, and we are only just scratching the surface. First Steps Himalaya will be there for the long haul.” So, what’s next for Fionna Julia Roberts Heiton? We would not be surprised if Hollywood came knocking on her door with a story like that. For more information or to donate visit the charity’s website. www.firststepshimalaya.org

O
TAME THE POLITICIANS
Jack Tame has spent 15 years keeping New Zealanders up to date on the biggest stories from around the world. Metropol catches up with the Christchurch-raised broadcaster about what it takes to take on the politicians ahead of an exceptional election. WORDS MORGAN TAIT
O
ne of New Zealand’s most recognisable television journalists, Jack Tame has been on our screens since he was hired by TVNZ at 19 years old. In that time, he’s chased news stories across all seven continents – narrating the most defining events of the last two decades. The 33-year-old spent five years as the state-owned broadcaster’s foreign correspondent in New York, where his final assignment was the infamous 2016 US election. Now, as the host of the hard news and current affairs show Q+A he’s holding New Zealand’s politicians to account amidst an unprecedented pandemic election. “There are a few interesting dynamics at play,” he says about the current campaign. “First of all, it’s amazing to compare this election with the last election, I think of all the things this election isn’t about.
“Over the last three years the government has had to deal with a series of massive crises. Most people would probably say they’ve been fairly successful in dealing with those crises and have done on the whole a pretty good job.” However, he says progress made on the domestic agenda – around mental health, child poverty and housing affordability - don’t stack up with promises made ahead of the last time Kiwis voted. “In a normal election campaign, the government might feel a lot of pressure from the opposition to deliver on their promises - but this isn’t a normal election. Covid-19 has changed everything about how we live.” A fact which, Jack says, sees Labour and National offering similar solutions. “I don’t think there’s a great deal

E-ING of difference between our major parties when it comes to policies. It’s almost like Covid-19 has brought them closer together than they might have otherwise been.” The build up to a general election can be a hectic time for journalists. Long hours, a lot of travel, and considerable pressure to be all over the ever-breaking latest news. So what happens when that allconsuming period is extended another month? “The only certain thing in the world at the moment is uncertainty, and journalists and newsrooms thrive in trying circumstances,” he says. “As difficult as this year has been for all of us, it has also been a rewarding year and a thrilling thing to be part of. It’s not good Covid-19 is here or anything, but it’s in these moments of crises that you feel like you’re contributing to the greater good.” And it has been a year where audiences are more tuned into the news than perhaps ever before. “The decision to move alert levels really impacts our lives in a significant way - so it’s no wonder people have been interested,” he says. With that attention, though, comes extra scrutiny and criticism. “I get a lot of hate mail. I just accept
that that is part of the job. What I strive for is to be hated evenly. I want both sides to be calling me biased.” This criticism, however, is not always from the audience. A recent Q+A interview with Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters made its own headlines when the political stalwart took offence to a line of questioning about NZ First allegedly leaking information about Green Party funding. During which, he called TVNZ a “disgrace” and called Jack “James” repeatedly. “It was very funny,” says Jack nonchalantly. “He and I have had many interviews, many times and it was hardly the first time we’ve seen Winston Peters rallying against the media.” While such confrontations would make many people sweat, Jack says he backs his well-researched questions and believes Kiwis are owed the answers. An approach which will only intensify as we get closer to polling day. • The 1 NEWS Your Vote 2020 Election Night Special airs 7pm Saturday 17 Oct, and the Q+A Election Special airs Sunday 18 Oct, 8am, TVNZ 1.

WHAT PROJECTS HAVE YOU WORKED ON SO FAR, AND WHAT DO YOU HAVE COMING UP?
An acoustic ambition At just 19, local singersongwriter Amber Carly Williams is set to perform at the Bay Dreams music festival in Nelson this summer. Metropol catches up with the first-year Ara Music Arts contemporary vocals student about her musical journey.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR GENRE AND MUSICAL BACKGROUND? I enjoy writing and recording my own music - it can often start off a certain feel and end up something completely different, but I tend to go for pop / indie. I like playing solo and using my loop pedal…but I’m also in the midst of forming a band for certain performances coming up.
WHAT DRIVES YOUR MUSICAL PASSION AND HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CRAFT? I first started playing guitar when I was 8-years-old, as I was always surrounded with music in the family. My mum passed away when I was young so seeing her do music was quite inspiring for me and I wanted to relate to that part of her. A few years down the track I started singing, just along with the guitar, but then my voice kind of took over and I realised I really had a passion for singing and that’s when song writing came in too. Being able to write my own music and express my thoughts and opinions has become something that has helped me through some challenging times.
I’m in the process of writing new music at the moment and recording it myself in my wee bedroom studio setup which is looking to result in an EP or maybe even a potential album. Over summer I’m looking into gigging more around the South Island in conjunction with my set at Bay Dreams Nelson in January. This will be the biggest performance I’ve ever done by a long shot so this is very exciting!
WHO / WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN YOUR WORK? My dad [Peter Williams of Acoustic Architecture] is my biggest supporter and without him I would’ve had no one to take me to my music lessons and take me to all my gigs when I didn’t have a car and accompany me when I was underage. I take influence from solo performing musicians like Tash Sultana, and some of my favourite artists include Phoebe Bridgers, Jeremy Zucker and Lennon Stella.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE TAKE AWAY FROM LISTENING TO YOUR MUSIC? Something I really try to aim for is making sure that my music isn’t just a catchy hook. I love being able to put my experiences and thoughts into my music, and it’s important to me that when people listen to it, they can relate to the lyrics in some sort of way or something stands out and makes them think of a time something like that happened to them.

Your moods feature timeless and trans-seasonal pieces – blouses, oversized blazers and coats, and romantic dresses. What is it about these items which attract your attention, and what do these bring to a wearer’s wardrobe? Dressing is a part of everyday expression, I hope the clothes we make provide a sense of freedom and optimism in the chaos of modern life with enduring pieces that balance utility and romance, masculinity and femininity, reality and mystery. Your most recent mood, Enduring Nature, is about the resilience and beauty of nature through change and catastrophe (a relatable theme for 2020). What inspired this mood, and how have you encapsulated this through your work? I had just finalised four years of letting go of a past relationship, and managed to forge ahead and rebuild – maintaining my home, looking after my business, myself and my children. I had an overwhelming sense that I might bloom
in 2020…but it wasn’t as simple as that! Enduring Nature is about encouraging people to contemplate nature’s lessons, and especially, nature’s ability to endure. Just like seeing tiny wildflowers emerging from the cracks in the pavement – we are reminded that beauty is found in the hardest places. There are seasons of retreat and seasons of growth, we need to acknowledge the same in our own lives, it’s okay to press pause, and it’s also important to be resilient. The collection has a feeling of nostalgia with vintage themes, not specific trends. The beautiful photo shoot for Enduring Nature (featured on our cover) was taken in Australia, during lockdown. How did this come about – and how was it orchestrated? Because we were locked down in New Zealand, I had to trust my friend, Derek Henderson who I have previously worked with, to realise my vision from afar. We found this beautiful modernist house in Palm Beach called Treetops, by architect Peter Muller which was the perfect canvas, it had the right materials that felt raw - stone, wood and lots of tumbling nature surrounding it. We enlisted the help of the talented Karla Clarke, whom Derek had worked with in the past. We worked together but from afar and they both translated the philosophy of Enduring Nature beautifully. You’ve spoken about how books, films and music keep you inspired. What have you been listening to, reading and watching lately? I’ve been reading Conversations with RBG by Jeffrey Rosen and I’m halfway through Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking. I read an excellent interview about John Lewis in Time magazine. Film, people ask me what I’ve seen and my mind always goes blank. I see so much. Unorthodox on Netflix was brilliant. Music, I’ve been listening to Palace - The Hoxa Sessions 2020 and an assortment of jazz and classical music.

You don’t follow the usual, albeit changing, pattern of seasonal collections. Please tell us why you take a different approach, and about that approach? I found fashion was too fast and too surface and wanted to wear clothes that made me feel timeless and confident. I was tired of buying very expensive season-based clothing, it seemed quite meaningless to me and hard to justify financially. I also wanted to allow time for the design process and I think the work needs longer than six months to live and be understood. Each mood encourages a slow approach to purchasing, made up of timeless designs that women can feel calm about purchasing and with longevity in mind. Slowing down the cycle feels good and addressing our carbon footprint and building a sustainable business are also reasons for the slow approach. Fast fashion doesn’t give women time to feel beautiful.

Artistic support for hospice ARTarama 2020 is a don’t miss event for those wanting to buy exceptional works of art donated by artists to raise money for Nurse Maude Hospice.
F
or 10 years ARTarama has been successfully adopted by both artists and the general public alike as a unique opportunity to showcase the
talent of Canterbury artists while also raising money for charity. This year, for the first time, it will also include sculptures and garden art.
The exhibition, which attracts a large and impressive line-up of established and emerging artists, has proved a must
attend event for collectors and art lovers, allowing them to see and buy some of the best of New Zealand art. Held at St Andrews College, ARTarama runs from October 9 to 11, starting with a function on Friday evening to launch the exhibition, preview the work and hold the art auction. On Saturday and Sunday, the exhibition is open to the public and they too have the opportunity to buy art. The last three ARTaramas, supported by Nurse Maude’s long-term sponsor, House of Travel, have seen a total of $60,000 raised by the Bishopdale Burnside Rotary for the hospice, making a significant contribution toward the cost of hospice care which Nurse Maude provides free of charge to its patients and their families. Tickets for the Friday gala evening are $25 each and available by emailing Garry@hot.co.nz or Sue Bramwell at sue.bramwell@ nursemaude.org.nz with the number of tickets required, a delivery address and a contact number.
TICKETS $25 each. Available from garry@hot.co.nz

WORDS JESS MURRAY
Don’t forget your roots! Ever-popular Kiwi band Six60 famously sings ‘Don’t forget your roots’. Whilst we are aware the song was paying tribute to family – the line is not totally misplaced when it comes to haircare. We are talking about the roots on your head, and specifically the rise of scalp care or “hair skinification”.
M
ore of a marketing monniker than scientific term, this is the concept of treating your scalp like it is an extension of your facial skincare routine. Skincare has boomed in recent years, with tutorials and product reviews just as popular as those for makeup and hairstyling, so much so, the global industry is expected to be worth more than $1 trillion
by 2025. Although, this is not to suggest that the world just hasn’t been aware we have scalps - more that we need to start treating them with a bit more TLC. And when treating your scalp like your face, those in the know recommend using similar types of ingredients you would see in skincare such as probiotics
and hyaluronic acid. Products to know include, Virtue’s scalp supplement and treatment and Neutrogena’s Healthy Scalp collection. Virtue founder and chief executive Melisse Shaban said since its supplement launched in June, it became the brand’s number nine (out of 50) best-selling product by August.
So why are we seeing such a skyrocket in scalp care sales? Cynics may see it as commodifying a new body part – but there is evidence to suggest the scalp skin needs a similar level of considered care as the rest of your epidermis to prevent irritation, flakiness and build up in pores and hair follicles.

That sneaky feeling WORDS MORGAN TAIT
Once reserved for occasions of exercise, the aptly named sneaker has well and truly snuck into our dayto-day wardrobes, where it shows no sign of imminent departure.
T
he continued rise of athleisure has been well documented, and sneakers have certainly established a strong footing in the closets of the world’s most stylish. And it’s not hard to see why. The right pair of sneakers can be used to achieve any look – be it polished, fashion-forward, classic or elevated casual. Though worthy of year-round affection, a sneaker really comes into its own around October. Too cold for sandals? Sneakers. Might rain later? Sneakers. No summer pedicure yet? Sneakers. These comfortable outfit heroes can save your frilly, feminine frocks from too much time in the closet, with a crisp pair of sneakers having the ability to dress down a dress from special-occasion-only, to

ere in Christchurch, Untouched World has been at the forefront of the movement since 1998. It was the first lifestyle fashion company in the world to be recognised by the United Nations for sustainability and has since gained praise from big names like the Clintons, Barack Obama and Joanna Lumley. Proud to be 96 percent New Zealand made and 100 percent passionate about protecting the planet, Untouched World’s new summer collection combines sustainably sourced natural fibres with enduring designs to deliver all the comfort of a work-from-home wardrobe without compromising on style. Strong believers in a less-is-more aesthetic, the company has carved out a niche for timeless, premium quality pieces that dress up or down with ease. Their latest arrivals include luxurious linens that move effortlessly from meetings to meet-ups, and Tencel tops and dresses that are splashed with a soft, summery seascape inspired print. Untouched World’s signature ZQ certified Merino knits deliver a dose of uplifting warmth, while an airy recycled cotton capsule offers cooling coverage as the days heat up. This season also sees the introduction of the CoolTree™ Collection, an ultrafine knitwear range made from an innovative new blend of Merino and Tencel. Building stronger, Dynamic Spines Whether back pain strikes after a sports game where you took one for the team, whether it has crept up on you with the passing years, or whether you simply reached for the can opener in your own kitchen and something went pop, you’ll know that back pain is debilitating - casting a cloud over every aspect of daily life.
T
he team of physiotherapists at Muscle People can help by working with you to create the core strength that is the foundation of fitness without injury, and a pain-free back. To
strengthen the core, which in turn supports the strength and healing of the spine, the team has developed a programme of therapeutic exercise called Dynamic Spines. Neck, upper
back, and lower back pain as well as core and postural weaknesses are all addressed within Dynamic Spines. The length of the Dynamic Spines programme is bespoke to you, specifically tailored to ensure that you reach your back health goals. Before enrolling you will be assessed by one of the physiotherapists to ensure the classes are going to be the best approach for your issues. Limited numbers mean you receive higher oneon-one attention from the physiotherapist instructors in each class as you work to your individual diagnosis and ability, but you also get to share the
challenges and fun within a group setting. As well as the medical and wellbeing benefits, there is an enjoyable social aspect to Dynamic Spines. Classes can include pilatesfocussed exercises and working out on the Oov – a fun, odd looking piece of equipment that activates core stabilising muscles while gently extending the spine. You’ll also receive exercises to do at home. Because the courses are designed and instructed by physiotherapists, they are available as treatment through the ACC system. Muscle People receive referrals from back specialists where core strengthening is required, and for postoperative rehabilitation as well as private clients who want to address pain, mobility and reverse a gradual decline in core strength. The classes are available at Muscle People’s three clinics in the city, at Bishopdale and at Wigram Skies, and they also run at different times throughout the day so there is a location and time to suit. To find out more about Dynamic Spines, phone Muscle People on 0800 027 194. www.musclepeople.co.nz Metropol 1 October, 2020 29
canterbury bride
Thanking the bride tribe WORDS MELINDA COLLINS
Your bridesmaids, they’ve been by your side through thick and thin and possibly some bridezilla moments to boot! Chances are, they have spent months co-hosting the bridal shower, helping pick and pay for bridesmaids dresses and providing emotional support heading into your big day. 30 1 October, 2020 Metropol
So why not treat them to a little something special to show your appreciation and provide a memento for this special day? We’ve collated some fun, fabulous and functional ideas.
FUN Fill jars with each bridesmaid’s favourite lollies and get a custom label that says Chill Pills to remind your tribe to enjoy themselves. What about personalised wine labels or champagne flutes with the wedding date and the bridesmaids’ names? Or plan ahead and get a great shot of your crew at the bachelorette party (not too far into the festivities) and have them framed – sweet and fun!
FABULOUS Why not up the bride of the year stakes with engraved bracelets for your lovely ladies? Make them matching or personalise them with each bracelet unique to each bridesmaid’s tastes. A personalised thank you box will add a sweet touch. Meanwhile bride tribe spa sets are trending right now, packed with all sorts of pampering goodies.
FUNCTIONAL Monogrammed PJs, satin bathrobes, purses or totes are not only practical, but they will make for great photos. A fun shot of your bridesmaids printed onto coffee cups will help them remember this special day when they have their morning coffee for years to come, or make it even more special with a small personalised memory album for each bridesmaid, including special moments you’ve shared over the years.
No matter what you decide to go with, keep it genuine and something you know your girls will appreciate. Show them some love — after all, it’s these women who have put their heart and soul into making your day such a special one.
When it comes to embracing the grey, there really is something for everyone, explains V for Hair and Beauty Master Stylist Vicki Ogden-O’Fee.

50 shades of silver
“Just because you have silver hair coming in and you want to go grey gracefully doesn’t mean it has to be a ‘silver’ colour,” she says. “We help you discover if you are warm or cool based on hair, skin and eyes, and from there we help you decide the best look for you.” While those with a warm base suit silver hair with soft champagne, sandy iris, strawberry beige, or translucent butterscotch tones, those with a cool base suit silver dove, champagne lilac or platinum iris. “Getting your colour undertone is so important and when this is done right it gives your face an instant brightening lift and can take years off,” Vicki says. “Get it wrong and you will feel drab and look drained and older, so consultation is key!”

Fan favourite fritter It is whitebait season! A Kiwi classic that screams summer is the holy whitebait fritter, and Red Post Café in Culverden is home to the fan favourite. Just an hour and a half out of Christchurch – whether you are coming or going into the Garden City, etch this café into your trip.
T
he fresh West Coast whitebait is on offer in the café for three months from September to November. The fritter is a versatile dish, served as a sandwich in between two slices of German Sourdough, as a meal with salad and fries or all on its lonesome. But always with a slice of lemon nearby. Thanks to daylight saving, resulting in longer and warmer nights, you can enjoy said fritter with a nice glass of wine al fresco style in the garden. Which owner Trent Allison says is very pleasant to sit in this time of year. Red Post Café are proud silver sponsors of the Hurunui Garden Festival, October 29 to November 1, so for all the garden fanatics - there is a way you can keep to your garden themed day. Add the café to your next day out. Open from 8am to 4pm Monday to Thursday, and 8am to 5pm Friday to Sunday.

Hello, asparagus season! WORDS MORGAN TAIT
Earthy and bitter asparagus is back. In season from September, asparagus is a vibrant and welcome addition to any meal, adding its fresh crunch to salads, balancing the richness of pastas and quiches, and even being the hero of simple, healthy snacks. SNAPPY SALAD
EGGY SPEARS
CARAMELISED CANAPÉS
Combine even more seasonal produce in the forms of snow peas, broad beans, cauliflower, and radish into a fresh and crunchy salad with asparagus, pine nuts and microgreens. Briefly soak the snow peas in boiling water, then combine with roughly chopped asparagus stalks in icy water before mixing all ingredients together. Dress with olive oil, lemon juice and sprinkle feta on top.
In a fry pan, blanch in just enough water to cover a single layer of asparagus spears. Once the water has evaporated, drizzle a small amount of olive oil and fry with salt, pepper and chilli flakes until tender and beginning to brown. Top with a poached egg and serve with fresh, seeded sourdough for a light brunch or lunch. Add some fish, like salmon, to upsize.
Sweet and crispy with a smoky touch, caramelised asparagus and bacon bunches are a great hors d’œuvre or grazing platter accoutrement. Wrap a trio of spears in a rasher of bacon and place on a wire rack over a lined oven tray. Drizzle with a 2:1:1 ratio mix of maple syrup, olive oil and Worcestershire sauce before baking for 15 to 20 minutes.

Ingredients 1 tbsp ghee or oil 240g cooked chickpeas (1 × 400g tin, drained and rinsed) 1/4 tsp smoked paprika 2 tsp maple syrup 350g ripe cherry tomatoes, halved (look out for the yellow ones) 200g fresh mozzarella or burrata, roughly torn, or crumbled feta Sea salt and black pepper SPINACH and WALNUT PESTO 8 walnut halves 1 big handful of baby spinach 1 big handful of fresh basil, leaves and stems, plus a few extra for garnishing 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar or juice and zest of ½ lemon 1 small garlic clove, roughly chopped 1 handful of grated parmesan or pecorino 6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, plus extra for drizzling

simple 10-minute starter which you could double up for a big sharing plate. Make sure all the ingredients (especially the mozzarella) are at room temperature – I’ve eaten far too many fridge-cold tomatoes and cheeses that don’t taste of anything. Use any nuts, seeds or greens in this, but don’t skip toasting the walnuts – it’s worth it and you’ve got a pan out already for the chickpeas.

In a large frying pan, gently toast the walnuts for one minute until they smell fragrant, keeping an eye on them so they don’t catch. Transfer to a food processor with all the other pesto ingredients except the olive oil. Blitz, adding the oil as you go, until smoothish. Season to taste. Put the pan back on a medium heat with the ghee or oil, add the chickpeas, smoked paprika and a pinch of sea salt and fry fortwo minutes until golden brown. Drizzle over the maple syrup, add a pinch of salt and leave to bubble for 30 seconds. Toss once more to coat in the salty-sweet oil. Meanwhile, arrange the cherry tomatoes, torn mozzarella and extra basil leaves on a large platter, then scatter over the chickpeas, drizzle over the pesto and serve straight away while the chickpeas are still hot.

MEATY MOUTHFULS
A STRING OF SEAFOOD
Pairing up bite-sized morsels with their likely partners always wins. Chicken and red pepper, lamb and onion, pork and pineapple, beef and mushroom. However, marinades are the success secret, helping meat char less, tenderise, and doubling as basters for a gorgeous glaze. To sizzle up this timeless trend, plate up with a flurry of fresh herbs or microgreens, and dollops of artisan dipping sauces.
The smoky flavour achieved when barbecuing kaimoana is a warm weather favourite, and seafood addicts will appreciate the simplicity of four fat, juicy scallops in a row on a bamboo or metal skewer, or garlic butterflied tiger prawns – perfect with a glaze and lively salad. To stretch out these delicacies, thread skewers with pineapple, peppers and red onions and pop a cherry tomato on each end.
GIVE VEGES A GRILLING
SWEET STICKS
Add crunchy rainbows of veges to your repertoire. From red, green, orange and yellow capsicums to cauliflower, zucchini, mushrooms, corn and onions. Top with tasty sauces like a lemon herb drizzle or tzatziki. Firm tofu packs a protein punch, soaking up seasonings and marinades. Try different mushroom varieties, such as oyster, for textured intensity, or the mouth-filling decadence of halloumi.
The BBQ needn’t power down at dessert time. Firm fruits caramelise beautifully on the grill, from peaches, apricots and nectarines to exotic mango. Decorated with edible flowers, and pots of melted chocolate, yoghurt or whipped cream for dunking, or drizzle a lime and ginger marinade for a piquant zing. Add some sticky marshmallows for the kids, or, pair with a balsamic drizzle to keep things interesting.

10 MAKES 10 ECLAIRS
SIMPLE YET IMPRESSIVE SWEET TREAT
Choux pastry can be a bit scary at first, but definitely give it a go — after a little practice you’ll never look back! There are so many options with choux; we’ve given a couple of sweet ones here, but choux is also great savoury, and deepfried, the filling choices are endless. These choux pastries should be eaten pretty soon after assembling, but the actual shells will keep well in an airtight container for a few days; pop them back in the oven to crisp up before cooling again and filling.
Choux pastry 200ml water 80g unsalted butter, cut into cubes pinch of sugar pinch of salt 135g plain flour, sifted 4 or 5 free-range eggs, lightly beaten Place water, butter, sugar and salt in a medium to large pot and gently heat to melt butter. Bring to the boil, then quickly remove from heat and add flour. Return to the heat and stir vigorously until mixture comes away from the sides of the pot and forms a ball (approximately two minutes). Place in a large mixing bowl and cool slightly. Start to add beaten egg a little at a time, beating with a wooden spoon after each addition until the batter is smooth and glossy. You may not have to add all the egg to get the right consistency. To check that the batter is ready for piping, use the finger test: drag your finger along the batter to make a trough. The sides of the trough should stay upright and not collapse into the dough. Extracted from Feed Me, Feed Me by Fran Mazza, published by Random House RRP $50. Copyright © Fran Mazza 2020. Éclairs 1 quantity Choux pastry makes 10 Passionfruit mousse pulp from 16 fresh passionfruit 2 tsp powdered gelatine 3 free-range eggs, separated 110g caster sugar 250ml cream Icing and decoration 2 cups icing sugar, sifted 2 tbsp freeze-dried passionfruit powder ¼ cup lemon juice edible flowers assorted dragées Preheat oven to 200°C. Line two oven trays with baking paper. Place choux pastry in a piping bag fitted with a large plain round nozzle. Holding bag at a 45-degree angle, pipe 12cm lengths onto prepared trays, leaving at least 4cm between each. Try to keep piping pressure consistent to ensure even éclairs. Bake for 20 minutes (it is important to not open the oven before this or your pastry will collapse) until lightly golden, then reduce the heat to 120°C and bake for a further 15 minutes or until dark golden. Remove from oven and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before filling. For the passionfruit mousse, place a sieve over the top of a bowl and press pulp through sieve to catch the juice. Discard seeds. Place juice in a small pot and sprinkle gelatine over. Let stand for 5 minutes to soften. Over a low heat, gently warm until gelatine is dissolved. Remove from heat and leave to cool to room temperature. Place egg yolks and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer and whisk until thick and pale. Gently fold in passionfruit liquid and place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or until just starting to set. Meanwhile, whip cream to soft peaks and set aside, then whisk egg whites to soft peaks. Gently fold cream through passionfruit mixture and then fold egg whites through. Cover and place in the refrigerator to set. Once the éclairs have cooled, slice horizontally and fill with the mousse. For the icing, place icing sugar and passionfruit powder in a bowl and mix in sufficient lemon juice to get a smooth icing. Drizzle over the top of each éclair and decorate with edible flowers and dragées. Metropol 1 October, 2020 43

On reflection WORDS MELINDA COLLINS
We’ve been courting a boho aesthetic in our abodes for a while now, and with the effortless chic that a large format mirror leaning casually against a wall affords us they are poised to play a starring role in this style narrative.
A
stand-out style in any abode, the boho or Bohemian look is a welcome digression away from the conservative. Relaxed, carefree and impossibly chic, its aesthetic flies in the face of convention. Rugs, curtains, duvets and lighting can all play their part in the ultimate boho style story,
but it’s the full-length or large format freestanding mirror that we’ve been reflecting on and we think it captures the beauty in any space. With warm, earthy tones playing a popular role in the boho story, mirrors with natural timber frames are a stylish addition au naturel for a more coastal feel, or in a crisp white
if it’s a cleaner, pared back palette that features in your décor dreams. Gilded frames bring a château mood, and black metal frames feel clean and contemporary. If wall space is limited, corners can be the ideal spot for a freestanding mirror, which can soften the overall effect of your space. Bring the outside
in by angling the mirror to reflect a window or internal greenery, making the room feel larger. Draping a climbing plant around the mirror will provide some visual interest and some serious styling brownie points, while hanging a rustic straw hat or purse from it will further spruce up your space.

mma decided to mix mental health issues with intense love scenes in her debut novel, Beautifully Broken, seeking to make the subject more interesting and bring authenticity. The motherof-three’s novel follows a struggling writer dealing with childhood trauma, while falling for two men. While it can be read as a stand-a-lone novel, the book
will form the first in a trilogy: Beautifully Breaking and Beautifully Becoming to follow. “I dreamed up the idea 12 years ago, but soon after I found out I was pregnant. I decided to focus on my family, but also grappled with fibromyalgia, which ended my teaching career. “After my third child, an emergency hysterectomy and a bout of glandular fever I

Keeping your cool
With hotter weather fast approaching, we’re all enjoying the longer, warmer days but, for many of us, the balmy summer nights can quickly turn into the sleepless discomfort of overheating and night sweats. And your bed could be making it worse!
D
reamwool Director and Mattress Designer David Henderson says most massproduced mattresses perform poorly in the warmer weather because they’re filled with synthetic products. Memory foam, polyester and gel; then surrounded by a foam box which doesn’t allow for air circulation. These materials lack breathability, making sleep uncomfortable or even impossible with the build-up of heat through the evening. The luxurious single-source Merino and other natural materials of a Dreamwool mattress are far better at controlling your bed’s microclimate than any synthetic
product. The ventilation and breathability of a Dreamwool bed keeps you cooler and drier, promoting a lower heart rate to help you get to deeper sleep, faster. And David says they’re better than ever. “We’ve been busy upgrading our products and have recently rolled out what we think is the best range of mattresses Dreamwool has ever produced. Our improved product line now includes 25 percent more natural, single-source Merino from select South Island farms. “That’s a full 10.5kg of wool for a super king mattress: up to six times more than other mattresses! We have also
added 30 percent more latex to the Pocketsprings range and refined our micro-coils to have twice the number of springs, encased in an all-natural calico and plant fibre for maximum comfort and breathability.” All of this adds up to a noticeable increase in plushness and comfort. Dreamwool’s unique design includes a range of flexible slat bases that work with your mattress to absorb the pressure on your shoulders and hips. This gives you a better quality of sleep and comfort as air circulates underneath your mattress, with the added benefit of a design that gives you a bed that’s easier to make.
Dreamwool’s custom woollen overlay with thousands of tiny micro-coils provides natural insulation in any season, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter. With a huge range of customisation options, there truly is a Dreamwool bed for everyone. Visit Dreamwool’s Sydenham showroom to find yours. Lovingly handcrafted in Christchurch for nearly a century, Dreamwool’s uncompromising quality and craftsmanship will give you the most luxurious sleep of a lifetime. The surrounding hand-painted faux frame is a fun and quirky idea for bringing attention to elements in a space. Likewise, colour coding can help identify where different types of tools and craft provisions can be found. Paint
storage boxes in an inspiring spectrum of colours using Resene FX Chalkboard Paint or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. These finishes work as a chalkboard, so they can be written on with chalk and wiped clean with a damp cloth.

Raising the toddlers of the plant world WORDS CÉLINE GIBSON
Also known as “vegetable confetti”, microgreens are the quickest food crop urban gardeners can grow – often as simply as in a container on your kitchen windowsill.
N
ot to be confused with sprouts - germinated seeds that are eaten root, seed and shoot - microgreens are the seedlings of leafy herbs and plants that are harvested less than a month after germination. The stem, seed leaves and first set of true leaves are all edible. Common microgreen varieties include amaranth,
MIGHTY MICROGREENS: • Microgreens are a nutrientdense food that contain digestible vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, and are packed with flavour, colour, texture and living enzymes • Some studies have shown microgreens contain considerably higher concentrations of vitamins and carotenoids than their mature plant counterparts • Many varieties will regrow and produce several harvests
basil, beets, broccoli, cabbage, celery, chard, chervil, coriander, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, mustard, parsley, peas, radish, rocket, spinach, and sorrel. Growing microgreens only requires good light - a well-lit kitchen bench, sunny windowsill or balcony - a suitable shallow container, water and a growing medium.
HOW TO GROW:
1.
Line seed tray with moistened paper. Fill tray with moist growing medium, e.g soil or burlap, about 2 to 3cm deep
2.
Sprinkle seeds over mix, press in lightly
3.
Water by misting with a spray bottle
4.
Place on a drainage tray in warm spot
5.
Water every day as needed, but avoid overwatering!
6.
Cover seeds with clear lid or plastic bag with holes snipped for airflow to encourage germination
7.
Harvest after the first two true leaves emerge from the cotyledon by snipping off at soil level

Tēnā koutou katoa. As I write this, we are in the lead-up to Māori Language Week. With a growing Māori population reflected in our workforce, customers and stakeholders, there has never been a better time to grow our competence and awareness of Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique and rich Māori heritage, culture and language. While our children may be learning te reo at their schools and daycares, where does this leave those already in the workplace? I am not fluent in te reo by any means, but I am willing to learn, which is why I joined some of my colleagues at our recent Māori Culture and Language in the Workplace workshop – a new programme of learning The Chamber launched this year. Facilitated by Anton Matthews (Te Rarawa, Te Aupouri), also owner of Fush restaurant, the three-part course covers basic pronunication, greetings, common workplace words and phrases, as well as an outline of tikanga (customary system of values and practices), and an overview of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi) and its importance today. For many people who want to learn, but aren’t sure where to start, this is a great starting point to gain the confidence to give it a go – in fact, the course has been so popular we have another scheduled for November, as well as an advanced course. This demonstrates an appetite among our business community to learn more about one of our official languages and share in our collective responsibility to keep this important, unique language alive. We’re all in this together — he waka eke noa.

I have been looking forward to October for a range of reasons, but the main one is the WORD Christchurch Spring Festival 2020. We might not be able to hear from overseas writers who had planned to participate, but the brilliant talent of our own writers will inspire the devoted readers among us. The festival will encourage debate and discussion about people, places and ideas. I registered and bought tickets straight away. I believe such festivals contribute to the essence of what makes a liveable city. Festivals that cater to children, young people, and people from every background and walk of life lie at the heart of the kind of vibrancy we need to bring the central city alive. At the same time this festival encourages us to think. How much do we all know about the Ngāi Tahu Settlement with the Crown? How well did we know Llew Summers, the man behind the amazing sculptures in our city? How well do we understand the journey that writing a biography (Charles Upham VC) represents, and what it says about the writer, Tom Scott? And then there are the writers of poetry and prose who will offer an answer to the question, “Who are New Zealanders?” And in another session what they would say in a letter to Ōtautahi. I am really looking forward to listening, thinking and discussing these with others, and to see central city venues and streets come alive with people enjoying each other’s company and thoughts.

With continuing concern around the impact of Covid-19 on the job market, there is no time like the present to consider entrepreneurship as the way forward. This doesn’t just apply to people already active in the work force. Graduating students are also entering the hardest job market since the GFC. Entrepreneurship will be a critical driver of our economic recovery. We will rely on new start-ups to innovate new ways of meeting our country’s needs, supporting our own populations, and providing new jobs. As Cantabrians, we are extraordinarily lucky to have what is fast becoming a dynamic community of entrepreneurs, innovators, and start-ups. If you are new to entrepreneurship, there are excellent online resources on the Ministry of Awesome website at ministryofawesome. com and at teohaka.co.nz. There are also a number of monthly meetups worth getting along to including Canterbury Angels’ Pitch & Pizza events (canterburyangels.co.nz); Ministry of Awesome’s well known start-up meetup, Coffee & Jam (live in October on the Ara campus); and Start-up Breakfast Club powered by the team at MYOB. All of these events are free and just require a simple online booking. All Ministry of Awesome events are livestreamed on Facebook as well so get on to our channel and learn. Christchurch has the red carpet rolled out for high growth entrepreneurs and innovators and there’s no better time than now to go chase that dream.

We’re about to let pedestrians, cyclists and scooter riders onto the latest section of the South Frame’s greenway to be completed, between Durham and Montreal Streets. Completion of the work in this block means you will be able to get from Colombo to Montreal Streets on this new garden-lined laneway, away from the traffic on Tuam or St Asaph Streets which flank it. Taking this journey will, however, draw your attention to the few sections of the South Frame still to be completed. The great news on that front is that all the agreements with the relevant landowners are now in place to allow Ōtākaro to finish this anchor project. This includes Butchers Lane, near Dux Central, which will create a layout for the area similar to that surrounding the ever-popular Little High Eatery. We hope the design encourages a similar style of private development in this area. Private and public spaces will also come together when the section of the greenway to the west of the ECan building is created. Here the laneway will effectively run though the Team Hutchinson Ford building, with the owners retaining the heritage roof over the top. Our successful divestment of the Odeon Theatre and Lawrie & Wilson Auctioneers sites in the South Frame to ECan recently will also lead to additional activity in this ever-growing green space.

Going back into Alert Level 2 certainly re-tested the resilience of our business community. Survival seems to be the theme as 2020 continues to test us all in one way or another. That said, watching any of the David Attenborough Planet Earth series, I am always in awe of what the animal kingdom has to do on a daily basis just to survive. It’s survival of the fittest, smartest, strongest, the most determined every second of their lives. In my view, determination and having a goal are key aspects of business survival and often these attributes drive certain people to overcome adversity. I recently spoke to one businessperson who said “failure is not an option” as he has a young family and cannot afford to fail. He has had to rethink all he does within his business and look for additional opportunities to help overcome Covid-19 related adversity. However, you should never be afraid of failure, as often this can be a precursor to success. Successful people often have a multitude of failures before finding the right mix to success. Having determination and an end goal drives them to pick themselves up and start again. With the work I do, I get to see firsthand how difficult it is for people out there at the moment. I have said this before but I will say it again, support your local, and be kind to each other, as you never know what someone is dealing with.

At the heart of one of the most desirable destinations in the world sits Ōtautahi Christchurch, a revitalised city where central South Island adventures begin. Arrive here and explore the full gambit of New Zealand experiences, just up the road, around the corner or over the pristine Southern Alps. No matter where you end up, Christchurch is just the beginning. That’s the message at the heart of #ExploreCHC, ChristchurchNZ’s new long-term visitation brand and campaign, with the revitalised city of Ōtautahi Christchurch at its heart. The campaign is led by ChristchurchNZ in collaboration with Christchurch Airport and a range of South Island regional tourism organisations, positioning Canterbury and the West Coast as an immensely desirable visitor destination. The campaign is a key action in the city’s response to the social and economic impacts of Covid-19 and is aimed at attracting domestic visitation and revitalising the city and region. The #ExploreCHC message will be in the market over the next three to five years and represents one of the most significant domestic marketing investments ChristchurchNZ has made to date. It showcases how the nearly 70,000 square kilometres making up Canterbury and the West Coast (nearly half the South Island) offers visitors the entire NZ experience – all within reach of Ōtautahi Christchurch. So please share the #ExploreCHC campaign far and wide, tell your friends and family about it and together let’s invite the rest of New Zealand to enjoy this cool little city we call home.

he shortlist was whittled down to 45 from the hundreds of regional winners, including 25 from Canterbury, as part of the annual peer-reviewed programme run by Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA). Amongst those shortlisted are Architype’s Bathroom Pavilion in Ashburton in the commercial category; Athfield Architect’s Rehua building at the University
of Canterbury in the education category; Coll Architecture’s multiunit category finalist on Madras Street; WSP Architecture’s interior architecture category finalist for St Patrick’s Church in Lincoln, and Sheppard & Rout Architects’ Dark Sky Project at Lake Takapō in the public architecture category. The next stage of judging will see the awards jury visit each building around New Zealand on a nationwide tour. The jury is led by Auckland architect Michael Thomson and includes fellow architects Lynda Simmons, Fiona Short and Anthony Hoete. Michael says the shortlisted projects demonstrate the breadth of work undertaken by New Zealand architects, and it was particularly pleasing to see five in the multi-unit category. “There has been a shortage of good-quality multi-unit housing in New Zealand, and it’s good to see this type of building getting the attention it needs from architects and their clients.” Shortlisted projects elsewhere around the country include an opera house, a bowling club, an airport terminal and an ecosanctuary.

Going greener With increasing frequency and intensity of global climate emergencies, the time to act is now.

W
orld Green Building Week was held in September and is the annual campaign that empowers us all to deliver greener buildings. This year’s theme was
#ActOnClimate. Aotearoa, like the rest of the world is currently facing substantial challenges. We need stimulus packages to combat the economic impacts of Covid-19 and we need to slash our climate pollution to halt the growing number of climate emergencies that countries worldwide are facing each year. Buildings account for more than one-third of global carbon emissions and therefore these challenges will not be solved unless we start to deliver greener buildings. Investment in greener buildings will stimulate innovation, activate supply chains and create jobs, while also supporting a healthier and more sustainable built environment, and creating thriving and resilient communities throughout Aotearoa. All of us have a key role to play. As a member of the New Zealand Green Building Council, WSP Architecture challenges ourselves and our clients to deliver greener buildings. For our new three-storey building currently being constructed at Cathedral College for the Catholic Diocese of Christchurch, we have embraced Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) technology in an innovative way to not only provide a resilient structural solution but also achieve significant savings in lifecycle carbon emissions when compared to more conventional steel or concrete solutions. The time to act is now and, no matter where you are, I challenge you to #ActOnClimate.

Time running out for re-repairs T
he Directors of WD Build and Hardy Projects, Mitchell James and Paul Hardy would like to urgently remind Canterbury homeowners that the final date to register with EQC for over-cap on-sold properties for repair is October 14, 2020. “We are very close to deadline now, so anyone with doubts about the quality of their repair should call us for a free assessment as soon as they can,” says Mitch. The EQC $300m policy for homeowners of over-cap on-sold
properties in Canterbury enables affected homeowners to apply for an ex gratia government payment to have their homes repaired. The payment is also available if the same owners had the home, but believed the repairs done postearthquakes were not satisfactory or overlooked levelling. WD Build and Hardy Projects have been at the forefront of this process, helping homeowners get the very best of home repairs. Mitchell and Paul have helped
owners with the process from the paperwork at the very beginning, to handing over beautifully finished homes at the completion of the project. “We have so much experience with the EQC process, as well as bringing our building expertise from foundations upwards, to the repair,” says Mitchell. Details for EQC repairs are available at www.eqc.govt.nz. Remember to register by October 14, 2020.
DEADLINE APPROACHING! EQC On-Sold Cap Policy ends 14th October 2020
There are only 13 days left before the EQC On-Sold ex-gratia programme close. WD Build and Hardy Projects have partnered together to help you assess your foundations, property levels and damages or questionable repairs that may be covered under the EQC On-Sold Support Package. Gardner by name, gardener by nature It is all in the name for Luke Gardner, a Canterbury landscaper who has grown into the profession of which he was named.
L
uke is behind the eponymous LG Landscape, which offers innovative and stylish design solutions for all landscaping services. He says turning bare outdoors into idyllic living spaces is his MO. “We can create custom designs to match any environment – whether it’s a traditional garden for a heritage home, something modern or something completely unique and different, we can do it.”
Recent jobs include a Japaneseinspired design and build, which featured an arched red moon bridge, water feature and minimalist greenery interspersed with varying stone and gravel paving work. LG Landscape has also completed larger scale commercial work, like a lush courtyard at the heritage Kamahi Apartments, Rosebank Winery and Waterloo Business Park. Luke says good landscaping lies in the experience, knowledge and skills of the landscaper as much as it does in their creativity. Designs need to not only account for aesthetic results, but use quality materials and greenery which is suited to particular environments. “A good landscaper needs to know as much about the technical parts of the work as they do about coming up with creative and aesthetically pleasing solutions for people’s homes and businesses,” he says. LG Landscape specialises in landscape design and construction, paving, decking, plants, lawns, irrigation, water features, and custom installs. CLIENTS WANT RESULTS WHICH LAST. WHAT ROLE DO PRODUCTS PLAY IN ENSURING THIS?
Starting life as post-quake commercial painters, Canterbury-born Prime Decorators has since expanded to residential and interior and exterior plastering and painting, as well as wall papering and roof spraying in Auckland and Christchurch. Metropol catches up with Prime Decorators’ Zak Turkmani to find out what professionals bring to a project.
“While the skill of the person using products is important, the product itself can make a huge difference, too. For example, we use Dulux and Resene because we know these products not only look great in terms of colour and finish, but that they are long-lasting and can handle maintenance cleaning.”
AT WHAT SCALE DOES A PROJECT EVOLVE FROM DIY TO REQUIRING PROFESSIONALS? “Using professionals ultimately saves time and stress, and in most cases money whether it’s a house or large building. We’re not only liable for our work, but we do it quickly and to the highest standards and finish – so clients can just turn up to a job which looks good and will last.”

Creating and renovating
“I never view anything as a problem, just a challenge that I can find a solution to,” says Reuben Green, Director of Green Builders. Architectural and hill builds are a specialty for Green Builders, but Reuben is equally enthusiastic about renovations. “Renovations are great. They can vary from a small extension to a second storey, but the fun of the challenge is to make the end result look as if we were never there, as if the new part is intrinsic to the original structure,” he says. “We have real expertise in adapting modern materials to look original. It’s enjoyable to work on the bespoke www.greenbuilders.co.nz Ph: 027 557 0999 reuben@greenbuilders.co.nz
and the unique, making new windows to match the original, creating unique stair treads, it really is our thing,” says Reuben. “Homes built anywhere from the mid-50s to the mid-80s, often in weatherboard are a personal favourite, but any renovation is an enjoyable project, figuring out the best methods and combining that with the ideal modern materials.” Reuben ensures every element of the build is geared towards high quality: “Excellent subtrades are essential, otherwise the whole system falls over. I get on very well with all my subcontractors, everyone we use is really part of one big team.”

environment in mind. “We wanted it to be a place for people, but we also wanted it to have minimal impact on the environment. Our goal was to create a sustainable building with a low carbon footprint that was both architecturally striking and welcoming.” Since Tūranga opened it has won the Supreme Award at the Property Council New Zealand’s Rider Levett Bucknall Property Industry Awards, the Warren and Mahoney Civic and Arts Property Award; the civic category award at the New Zealand Commercial Project Awards; the New Zealand Society of Earthquake Engineering’s Seismic Resilience Award for Design to Achieve Low Damage; the Structural Engineering Society of New Zealand’s Supreme Award; and the Institution of Structural Engineers’ Award for Structures in Extreme Conditions. Last year it was also named as one of four finalists for the 2019 International Federation of Library Associations/ Systematic Public Library of the Year Award.
A collaborative masterpiece Peter Wynyard of Wynyard Design Studio says a unique part of the development of Rai House in Wood Lane lies in the history of making it happen.
“Given the location and its vulnerability, there was a lot of strict criteria around the new build that involved insurance people, the council, plus a host of specialist consultants and structural engineers”, he says. “These things don’t happen overnight.” The beauty in the completed +Rai House is that the site was finally utilised as it should have been. “From an architectural point of view, we asked the client to engage with the site in a way they never could have before,”
says Peter. The result speaks for itself. This beautiful bespoke fourbedroom home was built for the contemplation of the Avon flowing gently past its banks, as well as to delight in the surrounding flora and visiting birdlife. Clad in vertical cedar with a tray metal cladding and glass balustrades, the set-out of the landscaping structural steel and cedar fins was an important feature. The cedar on the gates runs parallel with the cedar on the wall and interlocks when the gate opens to deliver a really crisp finish. A complex site prone to occasional flooding, the home was built in multiple stages and brought to life by several teams of trade experts; the finished product a testament to Wynyard Design’s ethos of collaboration. Delivering the vision
Heath Walters of Clive Barrington Construction adds his insight as to the building of Rai House.
e says the site was a challenge, being adjacent to the Avon River. His team was involved in laying the technical foundation system, designed to allow for the site being prone to occasional flooding. “The internal staircase, constructed of steel with oak treads, coupled with the balustrade of vertical steel fins at random lengths, was a heavy structure to get in, and oak is a premium product to work with. “Positioning this in the entranceway made it a critical part of the internal finish; it’s something we’re really proud of.” He says his team understands each build intimately and works closely with owners, consultants and sub-contractors to ensure what’s delivered on-site matches the designers’ vision and clients’ expectations. “We appreciate that ‘the extra one per cent’ is what sets us apart from our competition, so we will go out of our way to ensure this is delivered time after time.” Contact Clive on 03 343 2010 or info@clivebarrington.com. www.clivebarrington.com

The team used a new ground improvement system called Terafil, a Mainmark product, and the high-end landscaping was completed by Goom Landscapes. The townhouses are designed by South Architects and focus on maximising the utility of the relatively small site, “They did a really great job – a telling feature is the larger than usual bedrooms in the homes,” says Tom. “It’s fantastic to see them completed and all the spaces come together.” LOC Construction has now turned its attention to repurposing the Kate Sheppard house from a private residence to a public centre to celebrate Kate’s story, “It’s great to bring our craftsmanship and uncompromising high standards to this muchloved historic home,” says Tom.

ith options of studio, onebedroom, two-bedroom, and four two-storey penthouse apartments, this is the ultimate in niche inner-city nesting. Purchased in 2015, the brief given to Weir Architecture was to entirely modernize and reinvigorate the 21-year-old building. The work entailed reinstating the previously demolished rear section of the building, enclosing the south-facing open external
breezeway, incorporating a second high-speed lift, and creating a warm, welcoming covered entry and reception area. The remainder of the building was meticulously re-planned and reconfigured, floor by floor, to maximise the efficiencies of the limited spaces available. Superior fittings, materials and finishes were specified throughout kitchens, bathrooms and ensuites, while new double
glazing and higher levels of insulation enhanced the building’s thermal envelope. The building is owned by Mark Lanyon and Shane Le Compte of Lanyon & Le Compte Construction. The pair have completed a number of landmark projects around Christchurch, including the post-quake remediation of an “as is, where is” office building which became the city’s tallest hotel, the Crowne Plaza.
Weir Architecture are founding members of the New Zealand Green Building Council. Imperative to its ethos is to find alternative, innovative ways to repurpose buildings that would otherwise become landfill. Canopy Apartments is a triumph in sustainable design and construction; it’s a building Christchurch can be proud of. www.weirarchitecture.nz

he three-bedroom, twobathroom home endorses sleek and appealing design from every angle. Gabled roof lines, modern Axon Panel and large feature windows combine to create modern living with character. Created with entertainment in mind, the luxurious kitchen hosts high quality appliances and the fabulous living/dining spaces flow to timber decking, maximising exposure to the sun. The formal lounge can be closed off for intimacy or open to extend the living options. Black and white interiors bring glamour but are softened with neutrals and natural materials. The result is a home that is relaxing to
return to, but that also inspires and motivates with its forward-thinking design. David Reid Homes are known New Zealand-wide for raising the standard for quality craftsmanship and finish, and 13 Eleanor Lane illustrates that with every build the team are raising the bar. If you are in the new home game, you won’t get a better result than building with David Reid Homes. There is an opportunity to purchase the home and lease back to David Reid. The house is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 12 to 4pm or by appointment. Give the sales team a call to discuss your options: Diana 021 191 6259, Nigel 021 225 5644.
Every now and then (think maybe once or twice in a decade), I’ve been witness to a form of general real estate madness. Good madness, but madness nevertheless – unforeseen and unexplainable. Against every prediction, including the predictions of expert economists and bankers, and despite everything that has happened, real estate sales (both in terms of volume and value) are exceptional right now.
in the
There’s an incredible hunger to purchase, to push higher than expected when buying, to compete and to utilize auction.
Current
Unlike in other periods, this phenomenon doesn’t restrict itself to one particular price point or demographic: it’s every price point and over a great variety of locations.
Market
We have had spectacular results in our auction rooms, and it’s a sure sign that the market is favouring owners when they request an auction campaign for their property rather than challenging the idea.
SOLD
So, here are some personal observations:
Current Activity
$$
SOLD
$$
SOLD
Interest Rates and Interest Returns Yes, interest rates are low, in fact, they are tiny in comparison to anything any of us (including those with memories of up to 21% in the ‘80s) have ever had.
SOLD
SOLD
July, August and September, so far, have been extraordinary, with July’s figures showing the highest number of sales in five years nationwide. I’m expecting this to be no different for August and September, with our own company seeing lofty sales records exceeded and then superseded.
And this is giving people the chance to upgrade, get on the property ladder and make lots of property decisions, e.g. why rent when I can buy for the same, if not less, weekly outgoings?
SOLD
$$
It’s also creating a massive dilemma for those with bank investments who are seeing changes to their life and retirement choices pushing them into property purchases. This group is looking to create returns that, whilst lower from a yield perspective, are still better than the banks.
This pool of buyers sitting on savings or large equity in their properties is buying in force and it’s easy to see why.
The Election Is having no discernible effect on people’s property decisions. And if that’s a surprise, it’s supported by a recent study undertaken by Trade Me, where 82% of the 1,700 survey respondents said the timing and result of the election had no bearing on their decision to buy or sell.
Expats As I told someone recently, who asked, ‘is it true expats are coming home and buying?’, I can only reply ‘yes’ and ‘yes’. Even with border restrictions, Statistics NZ has reported that up until June, annual migration showed a net 79,400. What are they looking for? It appears to be location, which is everything. New is preferred, proximity to schools, cafés, the parks and city centre is desired, and they are shopping with big sums. Family members are often scouting and advising first.
Less Available Listings Which feeds the elements already mentioned, pushing prices – and, sometimes, tempers – and generally adding to the current state of ‘madness’ in the current market. My final observations are probably the most important. Despite the current climate, most buyers are still tough on compromised properties, those poorly presented and with title or structural issues. And please work with professionals rather than risk underselling. Just one of our recent success stories had owners enjoy a campaign that saw them sell for 68% above RV, creating a new local record. For results, or even just a conversation about real estate, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Summer is on its way!
