It can be a daunting feat producing a magazine every fortnight. Our hardworking team puts a lot into finding stories, getting in touch with all the required parties, organising imagery - and then designing it all into what you hold in your hands. And before the finished copies are even delivered to letterboxes, cafes and stands - the next one is already underway! One thing never lacking is the number of interesting and valuable local stories vying for position on Metropol’s pages.

And this issue is no different. A few weeks ago we heard a whisper that Cantab and Hollywood bigwig, Phil Keoghan, was in town. We reached out to The Amazing Race host, and were over the moon when he was keen to be interviewed and grace the cover of this issue. So, I do hope you enjoy reading about his new reality competition which was inspired by none other than his hardworking West Coast grandparents. The series has another local tie, too – it was edited, in part, from he and his wife and producing partner, Louise’s, MIQ hotel room in Christchurch during their recent trip home.

The remote and rugged West Coast couldn’t be further from Hollywood.

But it was Phil Keoghan’s hardworking grandparents from Westport who inspired his latest Tinseltown reality competition, Tough as Nails.

Metropol catches up with the Cantabrian about his recent trip home, making TV in a pandemic - and how we could be in for a Kiwi version.

elevision audiences and reality competition contestants - the world over owe a lot to Phil Keoghan’s upbringing. His father’s work as a plant scientist and mother’s teaching skills saw the family live around the world, contributing to the adventurous spirit Keoghan has harnessed as host for all 32 seasons of The Amazing Race.

Now, it is the practical skills of his West Coast grandparents

which inspired Tough as Nails, a celebration of the physical and mental strength of tradespeople.

Born in Lincoln, Keoghan moved around a lot as a child - spending time in Canada, Australia and the Caribbean before returning to Christchurch as a teen to board at St Andrew’s College. He spent his school holidays on the coast with his grandparents and extended family - mechanics, carpenters and farmers - where

but this show is really about acknowledging the people who make sure we can turn our lights on, that the toilets flush, that the roads are smooth, that we have food on our table and the world keeps working!”

The show’s first episode aired earlier this month, making it one of the only pieces of fresh television created during the pandemic - a tough challenge in itself.

Beyond the physical challenges of filming while observing social distancing and increased hygiene practices, the Keoghans were also responsible for the health and safety of hundreds of people working on the show.

The reality of which didn’t sink in until they landed in New Zealand in early December.

“Once we got into a quiet spot the weight of responsibility hit me. I was hugely relieved we were able to get through Covid19-free, but I couldn’t shut my brain down from thinking what could have gone wrong.

“It was this horrible feeling of relief and also anxiety - it’s very hard to explain.”

Keoghan acknowledges such challenges are “first world problems” compared to those endured by healthcare workers and millions of people around the world who have faced health issues, or lost family members of livelihoods during the pandemic.

He says the idea of filming a future season of the US series in New Zealand away from the stress of shooting in Los Angeles while there is a pandemic, would be incredible.

“If I had my way I would love to make a Kiwi version of Tough as Nails as well, after all, it’s where the idea came from.”

“I got an appreciation for people who work in the trades, and the idea that people had these skills they could use to fix things and make the world work,” says Keoghan, who not only hosts the show, but cocreated and produced it with his wife and producing partner, Louise.

The second season - in which tradies compete in a series of challenges to win $276,000NZD and a Ford F-150 Truck - was filmed in Los Angeles during the Covid-19 pandemic and edited, in part, from the Keoghan’s MIQ hotel room in Christchurch.

His paternal grandfather, Jack Keoghan, was a particularly strong influence. He passed on an education scholarship to start working as a mechanic at just 13, and went on to become an aero mechanic in World War II, as well as representing New Zealand in target shooting.

“It always irked me hearing people talk down about people like my grandfather,” says Keoghan.

“That somehow intelligence is measured by where you went to school, or in order to be well read or to be smart you have to have a tertiary education.

“My grandfather was very well read, he was very smart, top of his class, and one of the brightest people I have ever met.

“Sometimes circumstances restrict a person’s ability to follow a certain path but that is not a reflection of their intelligence or contribution to society.

“I see so many people who are being honoured for being able to sing or dance well...

The Council has worked closely with the Quake Families Trust on the programme for the service, which will acknowledge those who died, the bereaved, the severely injured, the traumatised, and everyone who endured hardship or lost something of value to them.

The service will also honour those who helped in the immediate aftermath of the quake and in the city’s ongoing recovery.

On Sunday February 28 the family focused Ōtautahi Together, kicks off at 2pm until 4pm.

In acknowledgement of the 10th anniversary of the earthquake, prominent landmarks across Canterbury will be lit up white.

There will also be no cost for those wanting to visit Canterbury Museum’s special Quake City exhibition on the day of the quake anniversary.

he national memorial service will be held at Oi Manawa – The Canterbury National Earthquake Memorial from 12.30pm on Monday, February 22.

On Sunday February 28 there will be a free concert – Ōtautahi Together – on the Archery Lawn of the Botanic Gardens. The concert, which will conclude the commemorations, will feature Bic Runga and other Christchurch performers.

Both events will be live streamed so those people around the world who are unable to attend, can still take part, says Christchurch City Council Civic and International Relations Manager Matt Nichols.

“We want people, no matter where they are in the world, to feel part of the commemorations,” he says.

“We are mindful that the Covid-19 pandemic means that many people who would normally travel to Christchurch for the 10th anniversary of the earthquake will be unable to do so.

“They will, however, be able

The bond between human and dog is unmatched. And when a dog’s role is to help their person, intriguing tales are to be told.

Love for animals was Sue Allison’s inspiration to write the book Friends Indeed: Assist Dogs and Their People. However, it was the human connections that captured her heart.

he 63-year-old Christchurch journalist and freelance writer lives on a lifestyle block in North Canterbury where she and her husband have raised four children as well as a menagerie of animals. “It’s a city girl’s dream,” she says. “So writing about animals as well is nirvana!”

Sue has written two children’s books and recently Secrets of Small Gardens published by New Holland, who was keen to publish her next inspiration.

“I have a background in anthropology. I’m not a newshound but I love writing, especially about humans and animals,” says Sue, who chose to write about dogs helping people in a health-related capacity such as sight, hearing and mobility impairment. She travelled around the country interviewing people with assistance dogs.

“Everyone had a story. I thought it would be a hard job choosing which ones to include in the book but everyone I talked to is in it.”

There are 41 chapters, each about a person, a dog, and their bond. The profiles include Cantabrians with heartwarming twists to the waggly, often hilarious, tales.

“People loved telling me the naughty things their ‘goofy’ dogs did when off duty. These are serious stories but there’s plenty of light heartedness.”

Errol from Christchurch certainly attracts children’s attention with a teddy bear riding the back of his guide dog, Prince. When Christchurch musician John Hore got his first guide dog, Brindy, in place of a cane, he felt like he was flying.

As an animal lover, Sue secretly feared the dogs would have a limited life. “But it was quite the opposite. They have 24/7 company, their own person, and a job. That’s a pretty perfect life for a dog.

These dogs are so eager to help their people, and the trainers harness that desire.”

While labradors leap to mind as the most common assistance dogs, there is a growing diversity of breeds.

With their amazing sense of smell, spaniels make excellent diabetic detection dogs, while small breeds are perfect for the elderly and there is a move towards dogs such as poodles which don’t shed hair.

Strong and amiable, golden retrievers are great for mobility assistance.

While most assist dogs undergo rigorous training and are bred for their jobs, several dogs in the book are rescue dogs, including three saved from death row at the pound.

“The dogs do so much more than their official roles,” says Sue. “For people with special needs, their dogs are a visible sign of often an invisible disability. They are also often a portal to more kindness, bringing out the best in everyone and acting as social conduits for people who can feel quite isolated. These dogs, and their people, are all heroes.”

The borders might be closed, but that isn’t stopping one the world’s most famous and influential artists setting up shop in Christchurch.

He may no longer be alive, but Vincent van Gogh’s work will be resurrected in a multi-sensory event.

n four Sunday mornings and one Thursday evening in March, the opera Der Freischütz (The Devil’s Marksman) will be performed in narropera format, in the opulent dimensions of Lansdowne Homestead’s famous Golden Room, at 132 Old Tai Tapu Rd. At 11am on Sundays 7, 14, 21, 28 March, The Narropera Trio of Dorothee Jansen, Cathy Irons and Haydn Rawstron presents its highly popular, musical-narrative entertainment, narropera.

an Gogh Alive has received rave reviews from around the world, as the artist’s timeless masterpiece are projected onto every surface of an exhibition space – taking viewers quite literally inside the artist’s work.

An evocative classical music score adds even more atmosphere to the event, which showcases thousands of the Dutch artist’s post-impressionist landscapes, still lifes, portraits and selfportraits.

With the change, iPhone users will need to be asked by apps - like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter - for permission to share their data. They will see a pop-up window in each app to warn if their data is being tracked for advertising purposes, and give them the option to opt in – or out – of this practice.

Such data tracking has come under fire for ethical reasons, and been linked to election interference and spreading controversial conspiracy theories and misinformation, as outlined in hit Netflix documentary, The Social Dilemma.

It is also the foundation of digital media models which connects advertisers to consumers based on personal data like age, location, gender, interests and other insights.

Such insights are often collected when signing up to and using an app.

An article from CNBC labels the move “seismic”.

“Apple is making a huge change to settings on users’ iPhones in the name of privacy, and it will fundamentally change the way apps track your data in order to create targeted ads,” says the article.

An article on the same topic, on Digitalmarketer.com, says the change is “groundbreaking.”

“While most people, consumers and tech giants alike, would agree that an increase and focus on personal data security is a good thing, it does have a very massive effect on one thing in particular: advertisement personalisation.

“Simply put, it could be harder for advertisers to reach their target audience like they do. That means online advertising, at least to iOS devices, could become significantly less effective.”

Does concussion stop the brain cleansing?

oncussions occur as the result of a traumatic blow to the head. This causes the brain and supporting membranes to bounce, twist and get damaged inside the skull.

Developments in the longerterm effects of concussion have featured in the news recently, as new brain research illustrates just how long-term and wide-ranging effects can be. After one of the largest ever investigations into the link between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and cognitive decline in later life, Danish and US researchers concluded that the younger a person was when sustaining a head injury, the higher the risk of developing a form of dementia.

The study looked at the health records of 2.8 million people over 36 years and found that individuals who sustained a TBI in their 20s were 63 percent more likely to develop dementia

in the next three decades than someone who did not sustain one.

Gill Redden, of Gill Redden Cranio, specialises in actually treating concussion symptoms rather than monitoring and forming plans, effectively treating patients sometimes months or years after the initial injury. “It is better, however, if people seek treatment immediately after their head or tailbone trauma, certainly not waiting 6 weeks to see if they ‘come right.’” says Gill, “Some of their cranial bones will definitely be jammed up!”

Metropol asked Peter, “What is an aneurysm?”

He says: “Simply put, an aneurysm is a dilated blood vessel. However, if it remains undetected as it dilates, there is an increased risk of rupture.

Such a rupture, if it happens in the community, can often prove fatal.”

Thankfully, the risk of rupture is low for small aneurysms but the prevalence in the community is relatively high and increases with age, ranging from 5 to 22 percent as age increases. This is particularly true for the male population.

Currently in New Zealand - unlike the UK, America and Sweden - there is no available national screening programme which means there is no way to exclude an aneurysm, unless it is identified incidentally.

The easy alternative provided at CVG is a simple, non-invasive, inexpensive test that can be performed in minutes.

With health on everyone’s mind, now is a good time to get yours in check.

If you’re tempted to pass on these aromatic, tasty stalks because they require some TLC to grow, or can seem superfluous to requirements when browsing the supermarket shelves, we urge you to reconsider. Here are Metropol’s tips for adding these pint-sized powerhouses to your next meal.

Bring any salad to life with some mint leaves, or add a refreshing zing to dressings, drinks and sauces. Add to a pitcher of water with a quill of cinnamon and lemon slice for instant refreshment.

The defining feature of pesto and many a pasta, most are familiar with Italian basil. But what about purple basil, which is a fragrant and colourful addition to salads?

ROSEMARY

THYME

Aromatic and warming, rosemary is a superstar of roast anything. Add to a tray of roast vege, leg of lamb or the stuffing of your chicken or turkey. Or, pop a sprig in your G&T.

Thyme straddles the sweet-savoury divide like a champ; making sauces on both sides of the flavour profiles that much punchier.

Try it in a cream and wine sauce, or in a sugary orange syrup.

1 tsp olive or canola oil, for greasing 200g feta, cut into roughly 1.5cm cubes 200g frozen peas, thawed 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced 6 large eggs 200g full-fat crème fraîche 1 heaped tbsp finely chopped fresh mint

Method 1

Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C and lightly oil a shallow round 20cm ceramic pie or quiche dish. It should be around 4cm deep.

Arrange the cubes of feta and the peas in the dish and sprinkle over the spring onions.

Beat the eggs and crème fraîche together in a bowl, then stir in the mint and season well with ground black pepper. (You probably won’t need salt as the cheese is salty already.)

Pour the egg mixture over the feta and peas and bake for about 35 to 40 minutes, or until just set. (Test by inserting the tip of a knife into the centre – there should be no liquid remaining.)

Leave the quiche to cool for a few minutes before cutting into wedges to serve.

All fired up A century-old Lyttelton fishing boat is the centrepiece bar for a pizza joint that’s authentic to the core. Arbour Woodfired Pizza and Bar is rustic simplicity and intense perfection in the same bite.

egan Hancox-Hammer and arbourist husband, Ra, dreamed of woodfired pizza set amongst native timbers, using local produce in Italian-esque tradition. It’s now a community hangout with a menu conjured by two seasoned pizza maestros, who are given free reign.

truck, it now permanently fills a gap in Lyttelton. Megan and Ra’s brother Mario run the business under its transparent roof, with indoor plants, a picturesque courtyard, and timber fit-out by Troy of Aridium Design. Since December’s opening, diners from both sides of the tunnel have experienced pizza as

they’ve unlikely tasted before.

The New-Zealand-made wood-fired oven is fired by logs from Ra’s arborist business, The Tree People.

Sustainability is imperative, and the business even recycles used oil for Ra’s chainsaws.

As a lockdown project, he began raising pigs for the tasty pancetta, and curing

their own meat. Megan eats plant based and shares her passion delectably in the menu choices.

Make your own mobile A popular nursery accessory of the 1950s, we think it’s high time for mobiles to make a comeback. Start by cutting a classic scalloped cloud and a dozen or so raindrop shapes out of your sheet of plywood. Then, using a drill, make holes in the tops of each of your raindrops, the top of your cloud and a line of holes across the bottom of your cloud – this uses five holes along the bottom.

Paint your cloud and raindrops using Resene testpots

in your favourite colours – used here is Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream for the cloud and Resene Vintage, Resene Just Right, Resene Quarter Frozen, Resene Thor, Resene Safehaven, Resene Laser and Resene Sandal for the raindrops. You can even paint patterns onto some of your raindrops, if you wish. These raindrops use stripes and ticks.

Using sparkly silver string – though twine, thread, wool or ribbon will do the trick, too – thread through the holes of your raindrops, knotting them on at even intervals before knotting the end to one of the holes in the bottom of the cloud. Then, thread a long length of string through the top hole in your cloud, knotting it securely. Hang your mobile from your ceiling using the appropriate hardware and high enough that it will be safely out of reach of little hands.

Creating homes which are sanctuaries from the uncertainties of current life is top of mind for many, and the driving force behind a movement named, “wellbeing design”. Which is, as the name suggests, curating spaces to promote wellbeing. Metropol looks at ways you can incorporate some well-designed wellbeing in your own spaces.

Home habitats should be a full sensory experience.

And while attention has long focused on colour and shape (sight), delicious aromatic candles and diffusers (scent) with atmospheric music playing (sound) – incorporating touch into lived spaces is trending.

Textured wall papers, plush upholstery and raw woods are being celebrated for invoking the comfort of touch.

Make the most of the healing powers of vitamin D by boosting the natural light in your home, especially ahead of winter. If you have a remodel or new build on the cards, consider installing additional windows or a skylight to maximise those healthboosting rays. Or, if such a dramatic change is not on the horizon, use a clever mirror system to reflect the natural light and make the sunlight, quite literally, go further.

The non-negotiable working from home enforced by lockdown resulted in many employers more than happy for staff to continue working away from the office. With less distractions, many are seeing a rise in productivity and wellbeing. However, it’s important to ensure work and home zones are kept separate – if you can’t close a door to keep the home office hidden, use plants and furniture to zone it off.

Coastal cool Rising out of the farmland and up from the idyllic beach, this sophisticated holiday home overlooking Waipu Cove, north of Auckland was masterminded by Jessop Architects and incorporates the warmth and uniqueness of natural timber throughout.

A

rchitect Darren Jessop says the project arose after he and his team renovated the owner’s Auckland villa. The resulting modern coastal holiday home on the generous elevated site fulfils the brief for a simple, low-maintenance getaway which capitalises on sweeping views and maximises indoor-outdoor

entertaining areas.

The L-shaped form of the house points east out to the Hen and Chicken Islands along the bedroom wing, and north up the coast to Marsden Point and Whangarei Heads along the living wing.

Extensive 3.2m joinery can be opened or closed to cater

for wind direction, without compromising on panoramic views.

The team delivered a dream holiday home in a restrained material palette of concrete, cedar and aluminium: both unpretentious and durable against the marine environment.

The stunning home separates living and sleeping to take advantage of the sweeping coastal views, and free-flowing outdoor entertainment spaces are protected from onshore and prevailing winds.

Multiple options for opening and closing the indoor spaces, together with a covered outdoor room, complete with kitchen and fireplace off the north side of the living wing, create possibilities for all weather conditions.

Inside, the home reflects the

simplicity of the exterior, with materials enhancing the indooroutdoor flow. Cedar sarking on the ceilings carries through uninterrupted to the soffits, and is matched with wide-planked oak on the floors.

The Western Red Cedar interior sarking and exterior soffits were sourced and machined by JSC Timber.

“We were lucky enough to be involved, and for us it’s wonderful to deliver high quality products and see it used like this,” says JSC Timber’s Johnny Dobbyn.

“The chosen species of timbers used will help ensure longevity or sustainability and look of the build with minimal maintenance.”

Likewise, the ethically sourced Iroko hardwood decking is nonleeching and stable, making it ideal for withstanding the seaside environment, says Johnny.

The combination of petrol and electric power working in harmony resulted in a car which was livelier, and more fun to drive.

he new IS consists of seven different variants. The base IS300 and IS300h, moving to the higher spec IS300 and IS300H Limited, and on to the performance-charged IS00, IS300h and IS350F Sport.

Prices start at $70,900 for the entry level IS300 and finish with the IS350F Sport at $101,800.

In typical Lexus fashion, petrol and hybrid powertrains return, with the IS300 getting a 2L turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine mated to an eight-speed automatic box with 180kW/350Nm. The IS300 Hybrid gets a 2.5L four cylinder with 164kW and combined torque figures of 521Nm. Fuel figures? Try 5.1L/100km. The IS350F Sport naturally gets the most grunt, with a 3.5L naturally aspirated V6 with 232kW and 380Nm. Looks wise, the new IS Sports has an entirely new spindle grill, redesigned head and taillight cluster, and a more swooping coupe-like roofline. For what is essentially a heavy facelift, the new IS certainly looks good, especially with the blacked-out accents and 19-inch BBS matt black alloys of the F-Sport.

Inside, you get a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The leather seats are just as sublime, and all the switchgear feels so well put together.

Leaving Lexus New Zealand HQ in Palmerston North, we made our way to Taupo for our overnight stop at The Hilton.

First was the IS300 Limited Petrol, which performed well, but you did need to give it stick to make some brisk progress.

Steering was well weighted, and it felt very planted on the move. Also, the 17-speaker Mark Levinson sound system gets a big thumbs up. Next up was the IS300 Hybrid.

This is a much more engaging drive. The combination of petrol and electric power working in harmony resulted in a car which was livelier, and more fun to drive.

Leaving Taupo the next day, it was time for the IS350F Sport. However, the IS300H feels just as sporty on twisty roads heading for the Waikato. But, despite the larger alloys, improvements in ride comfort over the previous generation F-Sport was a nice surprise.

We then made our way to Hampton Downs Raceway, which this writer enjoyed at the wheel of the sublime LC500 Convertible. What amazed me the most is the new IS can still thrill on track, then again, the new IS was the first Lexus to be developed on their new, Nurburgring inspired, Shimoyama Test Track.

Based on this taster, the IS300H just edges ahead of the F-Sport as being my top pick of the range. I’m looking forward to putting the new Lexus IS through its paces on Canterbury roads over the coming months.

Mazda’s new BT50 is finally here. Available in 2WD and 4WD, the range starts with the double cab GSX and ends with my test car, the flagship 4WD double cab limited.

A

t $47,490 and $60,990, respectively, the price is up there yes, but this is somewhat justified when you step inside.

The minimalist cues of Mazda’s Kododesign philosophy is riddled throughout the cabin.

Switchgear feels solid, and the level of tech on-board is very generous. The infotainment system is first rate and the leather seats are some of the most comfortable I have experienced in any ute.

All models come with a 3L turbodiesel four-cylinder engine with 140kW and 450Nm of torque mated to a six-speed auto box. While it does require a firm boot to get going, it settles down to a quiet hum while on the move. The steering is almost perfect, allowing you to coax it freely into each corner.

The BT50 doesn’t try to blind you with off road gizmos, but its simple 2H, 4H and 4L drive modes do their job well. However,

I would be somewhat wary of taking that svelte nose through a muddy riverbed every weekend.

The new Mazda BT50 is unlikely to appeal to the blood, toil and sweat of the farmyard or worksite. Its unparalleled levels of comfort, refinement, and handsome lines will most likely appeal to someone wanting something which will tow and occasionally rough it if need be. Either way, the BT50 is still a marvellous ute.

For Dennis Charlett, motorcycles are a way of life, whether on a Saturday ride, or competing in the New Zealand Superbike Championship, of which he has multiple national titles under his belt.

The name Kamiq originates from the language of the Inuit people, native to Northern Canada and Greenland. It means, “something that fits perfectly”. And I think that says it all.
