Double award for South Architects

Christchurch-based South Architects took out two top honours at this year’s Architectural Design Awards.

In the Residential New Home over 300m2 category the award went to the Folded Roof Home by Craig South of South Architects.

Built on a narrow street façade, this home was recognised for its use of a folded roof form to guide visitors up through the interior spaces toward a view of the Southern Alps.

“This is a thoughtful and inventive design,” said the judges. “Dynamic space planning has been employed particularly well to resolve issues and exploit the full potential of this challenging site. The folded roof planes are set up to complement the spatial planning.

“This is a scheme where three dimensions are needed to tell the story and where the elevational drawings struggle to illustrate how the folded roof form has been employed with great poise,” the judges said.

The second award was in the Multi-Unit Dwelling Architectural Design category for the Peterborough Housing Co-operative.

Built following the Canterbury earthquakes, the co-operative is based on the philosophy of co-housing, which emphasises community space and connection while isolating car parking.

“What we have here is a project that is both very wellexecuted and very timely. The result is a particularly wellconceived co-housing scheme that exemplifi es the potential for an increasingly important approach to multi-unit living in New Zealand,” judges said.

Award-winning interior design

The Christchurch Style Revival by Greg Young and Andy McLeod of Young Architects has won the 2021 Resene Residential Interiors Architectural Design Award.

Infl uenced by The Christchurch Style of architecture, the project was recognised by the ADNZ judging panel for updating the use of technology and engineering to the best practice wherever possible.

“Careful and well-controlled articulation of a rich material palette has contributed to a very successful interior in this project that both respects and references the Christchurch style with a clear authority and understanding,” judges noted.

“Concrete and timber sit alongside each other to set up the primary visual experience. Timber adds to the warmth and richness and this is successfully contrasted against the harder bleached surfaces that the concrete provides the base for.

“Planning is also controlled particularly well. Interior to exterior fl ow is carefully crafted with a continuation of materials and excellent attention to detailing. Careful control of natural and artifi cial lighting is a fi nal key to a very well-articulated solution that creates a set of refi ned interior spaces,” the judges said.

The project has also previously won an award for architect Craig South.

A distinctive copper roof undulates across three separate wings of the house, catching the changing light, sun and shadows beneath it.

The judges commented that the interplay between the freeform roof and the concrete create “an architectural drama that enlivens this house inside and out”.

Judges were also impressed by the craftsmanship in the home, saying that the curved plywood ceilings interacted fl awlessly with the window joinery, and the wall-to-fl oor fi nishes were of the highest standard.

“This building is inspiring; it features a clever design, meticulous attention to detail and an accurate construction,” they added.

Ready for change?

Too much time spent staring at the same four walls can be a strong motivator for change. Buying is an option, but building or renovating are great ways to avoid a hot real estate market and make those changes too; even if the process can seem a little daunting.

Sandra Davies, an architectural designer, and Dean McFarlane, a project manager, both with engineering consultants Cook Costello, o er these suggestions to make the process less intimidating.

“A great way to reduce that overwhelmed feeling on a renovation or build project is to delegate the management of it to someone else, someone who can take the project from concept to completion,” says Dean. “That’s where the likes of Cook Costello come into it. It’s a key part of my job to guide you through the consent process, work through any exemptions, all that sort of thing. I know the ins and outs of what the council requires which can be tricky for someone not dealing with it all the time. I am also able to recommend and manage contractors and specialist consultants.”

It’s important to work with professionals who can bring all your ideas together, working with what you have and what you want.

“For me, that means working alongside the client giving them a personalised design experience while keeping within budget and site constraints,” says Sandra.

Dean agrees, “I would say it’s key that regular updates are provided to the client; that we listen to their needs and wants and work with their best interests in mind.”

Make sure that those o ering advice and professional services have all the right qualifi cations and are backed by their industry groups.

“Between Dean and I, we have over 40 years experience and are both licensed building practitioners. I am also an accredited Homestar Assessor and can provide design solutions to ensure your home is warmer, drier, healthier, and the running costs are lowered,” explains Sandra.

For those who are worried about the money involved in a building or renovation project, Dean gives this fi nal piece of advice. “Make yourself aware of the expected timelines and where the money is being spent and when it’ll be needed. I can work with you on this, helping with budgeting for bank progress payments or loan applications. Call us at Cook Costello. We have engineers across multiple disciplines and can collaboratively provide site analysis and planning, feasibility studies, concept design and detailing through to building consent submission taking your project from a plan to reality incorporating these ideals through the journey.”
