While it is easy to feel removed from what has recently happened in America with the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe vs Wade, as our Prime Minister perfectly put it, “it feels like a loss for women everywhere”. New Zealand’s abortion laws were debated and voted on in 2020, officially removing abortion from the Crimes Act. In a nation that has a proud and progressive history, it wasn’t achieved without the

Since winning Masterchef in 2011, Nadia Lim has barely taken her foot off the pedal. Known for co-founding popular meal delivery business My Food Bag, Nadia has also been gracing our screens once again, returning to the Masterchef kitchen as a judge in the latest season. very familiar with food and recipes that kids love. Also two paediatric dietitians were on board, and they are experts in their field, this is what they do. We wrote a lot, it had to be trimmed down!” Moving down south a couple of years ago, Nadia and her family are loving their life on the farm near Arrowtown. “We just slotted right in. Never any thoughts of missing the city, no hesitation. I’ve never been a city person, and I know I could never go back. We are expecting a big snow soon, and we are so enclosed by the mountains.” Their home location also made Nadia’s latest stint on Masterchef that much easier as it was filmed in the beautiful, neighbouring Queenstown. Her experience returning to the show as a judge was in a word - fun. “I love my co judges, they are my buddies. We all knew each other before the show and are good mates. I’ve known Michael for 10 years, and Vaughan lives down here too. We had such a great time on set, just working with mates. The contestants were so lovely, and we all got on so well.” Being back on the show was unsurprisingly a nostalgic experience for Nadia, and she could reflect on how much her life has changed since the last time she was there. “It definitely brought back memories, and maybe made me empathetic as a judge. I was also maybe a bit harder because I wanted to push them. Sometimes as a constestant, you can play it a bit safe, and skim across the surface, not taking any risks. So I was always pushing them, and reminding them that this is your time to shine.” With filming wrapped, Nadia’s schedule is only slightly less busy, with her varied commitments and work taking up a lot of her time, but days spent on the farm are definitely her favourite. “My days are a bit more normal, and I have more days working on the farm. It’s really what I want to do most of the time. I often get stuck behind a computer, but my favourite thing to do is work on the farm.”

adia’s latest project is a new cookbook to add to her catalogue, and this time it’s all about the kids. YUM! is a collection of favourite meals and ideas for feeding the whole family. It covers everything from babies starting solids to older school kids who are fussy when it comes to food. “The reason I put it together was simply because over the last four years I was getting constant requests from parents and caregivers. ‘It would be so cool if you had a book with tips and tricks for cooking for kids.’ Starting from baby age, starting from solids, parents want guidance, they want advice.” Nadia appreciates that parents are often overwhelmed with advice and what’s best when it comes to food and nutrition for their kids. It is a concern parents can face, especially when they have a fussy eater who doesn’t like their vegetables. Being able to offer some sound advice, easy tips and tricks, encouragement and validation is the goal of YUM! And as for Nadia’s kids, they are big fans of the Favourite Butter Chicken, Chicken and Corn Dumplings and Pumpkin Gnocchi. “Most nights I try to do one meal, but a couple of nights a week we have separate meals. I want more exotic meals sometimes, so the other night I did simple cauliflower spinach bacon pasta for the kids. It is so quick and easy, and they love it. Then I did a spicy Vietnamese fish salad for us.” YUM! was a collaborative project that Nadia completed alongside Annabel Ingliss, and paediatric dietitians Jenny Douglas and Lisa Daniels. “It is the first book I have done and not just had me, and it was a really nice process. I shared the recipe development with Annabel, a good friend and recipe developer, and she has three young kids herself so she is

CHRISTCHURCH CONCERT

Corpus Medicorum will tour New Zealand’s South Island with concerts in Christchurch and Dunedin. For the Christchurch concert, Maestro Crellin will conduct master works from Weber, Brahms, and an Elgar cello concerto, featuring soloist and first year doctor from Auckland’s Middlemore Hospital, Catherine Kwak.

7.30PM Wednesday 21 September Christchurch Town Hall Auditorium Tickets to the concert are $60/$25 and can be bought from premier.ticketek.co.nz.

A worthy cause Demand for Canterbury Charity Hospital’s free medical, surgical, dental and counselling services is steadily increasing as many Cantabrians struggle to access care through the public system. For some people, being turned down for life-altering procedures means enduring pain and discomfort. The hospital’s 300 volunteers, including surgeons, dentists, anaesthetists, nurses and support staff work hard to provide health services to as many people as possible, but need public support and donations to help meet the cost of providing the services. “We don’t receive any Government funding. With your assistance, we can offer more lifechanging medical treatments to the vulnerable in our community, who would not otherwise have access to care,” explains fundraising coordinator Rosie Graham. “A gift from you will mean better health and quality of life for hundreds of Cantabrians.” To be eligible for care, people must have been turned down by the public health system, not have medical insurance and be able to demonstrate that they cannot afford to have their treatment privately. Feed your mind The chill of midwinter is the ideal time to renew your relationship with visual art by visiting a local gallery. A warm, dry, and calm oasis, a gallery sojourn offers an escape from everyday stresses, inspires and feeds our minds, and can boost our own productivity.

C

hristchurch’s newest art destination is located opposite Margaret Mahy playground at 210 Armagh Street, in the central city. Beautifully sited within the fully renovated MED building, The Art Shop gallery was built by T&A Construction. Its mezzanine floor is a particular highlight of the generous scale of the gallery. With true artists’ eyes, owners John and Kate Morrison and Antony Buckby have not only curated a stunning collection, but ensured visitors feel the joy of the gorgeous interior of the historic building. “It is a unique, contemporary art gallery for Christchurch. We are a lot larger than the norm, with a huge amount of art to browse,” says Kate. The gallery shows contemporary art and sculpture, jewellery and glass. Originating from The Christchurch Art Show, it features some of the artists who exhibit at that event. A wine and coffee bar will open this July. “It really is a special place to visit, enjoy, and discover something special,” says Kate. The current exhibition, chosen for the grand opening, is the “Art Signature Piece”. It features custom-made signature artworks from the gallery’s artists. “We invited our artists to create a signature artwork to celebrate the new space,” says Kate, “how each artist makes their mark is what ‘Signature Pieces’ is all about.” August will see Eketāhuna sculptor and painter, Mark Dimock, feature in the gallery. The website carries paintings currently available, as well as biographies of gallery artists. “We encourage people to sign up online for the newsletter. They’ll be kept up to date on upcoming exhibitions and special events,” says Kate. However, as Christchurch’s most beautiful and welcoming treasure trove of contemporary art, you really must experience it for yourself.

F OR THE LOVE O F

FASHION Amongst ever-evolving trends and styles, fashion muse Josie Wiley brings class and colour to New Zealand fashion as a womenswear buyer for designer clothing store Superette. Metropol writer Nina Tucker catches up with Josie about her journey in the industry and life as a buyer.

A

fter developing a lust for fashion from New Zealand fashion icon Barbara Lee with whom her mother worked, Josie knew she belonged amongst elaborate and colourful clothes. “I have had a love affair with fashion for as long as I can remember.” While working in Auckland retail, Josie saw a position available at Superette. In a growing team, Josie was able to jump from department to department before developing a liking for buying. Despite a successful career in New Zealand’s fierce fashion industry, Josie once struggled with what others thought of her and her outfits. After taking on board the nonchalance of the French following a Parisian buying trip, what matters now is how she feels in her clothes. “I trust my gut and my experience, and if it feels right then I go for it.” When buying for Superette, Josie takes inspiration from all aspects of her daily life. Following the pandemic,

she finds stimulation in simple things, from flowerbed colours to Instagram posts. “I remember in our first lockdown seeing a vivid, bright violet-coloured flower next to a dark red leaf and it was love at first sight. Funnily enough that colour combination was actually in the next season’s colour palette.” Josie then incorporates these collections into her wardrobe, building chic, sophisticated looks perfectly suited to each season. Starting each day with a strong coffee, Josie can be found anywhere from her desk communicating with suppliers to showings, to the store sharing new styles. As a buyer, Josie’s intention is to “bring the world the best curation for all their daily needs.”

See below for Josie’s top winter wardrobe picks. - A pair of chunky boots - A long winter coat - A classic, oversized blazer - A blanket scarf in a vivid colour makes a tonal outfit pop

ou can do it, and now’s a great time to round up the girls and head to Hanmer Springs for some craft and retail therapy, some relaxing and some pure indulgence. The Alpine Winter Festival Hanmer Springs has kicked off and is running throughout July with lots of added events and excitement. A must-do is a visit to Mickey Raes Gifts & Crafts in the Boulder Point Precinct, where owner Wendy Lamont has a fabulous selection of giftware, haberdashery, fabrics, sewing and knitting supplies and craft kits. Wendy personally selects all the giftware and other lines, including baby clothing and educational toys, craft goodies such as wool and yarn supplies, and Liberty fabrics, and even has her own label of wedding accessories. “I have a great selection of New Zealand author books and New Zealand souvenirs, Buxton and Baron leather bags, purses and wallets, and also Diamond Dotz art kits too,” she adds. Contact Wendy (see below) to organise your weekend and where to stay. Call her on 03 315 5383, email wenzmickeyrae@ gmail.com or message Wendy via Mickey Raes Facebook page to order.

Making a portfolio BY ALISTAIR BEAN

Recently I attended an International Investment Research Conference in Sydney, with more than 800 other financial advice specialists.

A

lmost all in attendance were very positive about our economic futures, with shipping traffic jams unravelling, globally very high employment numbers, borders reopened and the world becoming vaccinated, regardless of rising interest rates and inflation. The most important conference theme was sticking to fundamentals and having the right investments in the construction of your portfolio. Your financial adviser is a specialist and can help guide you where to put your funds, and also regularly monitor, rebalance your portfolio and review your ongoing personal needs. An important factor in deciding where to invest your funds are the essentials of life, such as food, water, clothing, sleep, and shelter, along with modern

18 July 7, 2022 Metropol

technology, communication and entertainment. Many investments can involve some or all of these. Current investment prices have been knocked by supply and demand both up and down and as such, are providing excellent opportunities at these inflationaffected values. This doesn’t mean that you are going to make a fortune tomorrow, but over time quality investments will likely achieve results as we return back to normalities of open borders and far less restricted trade. Also your KiwiSaver is now purchasing more units because your regular, same amount invested from salary deductions, is now picking up those units at fire sale prices, which means you now have more quantity to recover with. So, don’t be despondent with your KiwiSaver values at the moment, it’s one of those times when the worst of times, are in fact the best of times.

DO YOU NEED HELP? The other major theme was ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance). Very much all commercial organisations are now including these factors in running their business, particularly if they are a public company and it is the right thing to do on all fronts. Anyone who is showing only “token” greenwashing or gender diversity is being found out. They must be genuine in their efforts, and they will be rewarded for doing so. Interest rates will go up and down, recessions may occur resulting in the same thing happening to your own funds. If you want obligation free assistance with constructing an Investment Portfolio or Financial Adviser assisted KiwiSaver, with regular monitoring and review, including ESG awareness, contact Alistair Bean & Associates – Financial Advisers (details below.) Anyone who mentions this editorial will receive 50 percent off Implementation Fees – Minimum Investment Portfolio $250,000, Minimum KiwiSaver $50,000 (either existing or new). Connecting people and property The London real estate scene is a trial by fire scenario.

T

he pace is fast, agents don’t work in teams, open homes just aren’t a thing, and agents have to be prepared to show eight parties through a home in a day. Only the excellent survive, and only the truly extraordinary have huge success and become number one in their firm. Think you won’t find anyone like that in Christchurch? Meet Anthony Deyn, agent at Harcourts Gold Papanui. With just two years in Christchurch, Anthony has been in the top

20 agents for Harcourts Gold 2020/21, scooped a Platinum award for outstanding performance in the Real Estate Industry for all of Harcourts, won the Rookie Award, and the Rising Star Award in Canterbury. His maxim “connecting people and property”, turns out to be a very modest descriptor for his achievements. “My London experience gives me a real edge in Christchurch. I understand the power of marketing for delivering results,” says Anthony.

Like inflation? Neither do we.

HIS FOUR TENETS: - get it sold - make it easy - reduce risk - maximise the sale price “I’m providing these details not to come across as a tiresome bore but to demonstrate a number of factors that have helped achieve great results and gain trust from potential clients.” If you’re looking to sell in the near future – contact Team Deyn today.

Waipara truffle hunt

From June to August in North Canterbury, it is time to go truffle hunting.

D

ollar for dollar, truffles (aka Black Gold) are one of the most expensive luxury foods you can buy, taking years to cultivate, and only available during a short season. North Canterbury is home to Kings Truffles, where the team, led by Jax Lee, grow and supply fresh truffles direct from the source to top chefs and food connoisseurs alike. Their primary truffiere is in the heart of Waipara’s limestone country, and for a few short weeks you can join them in a bespoke two-hour experience, seeking elusive black Périgord truffles. For added excitement Christchurch’s Garden City Helicopters has a package that will fly you there and back, and includes a special truffle lunch at Waipara’s Black Estate Wines. If flying or truffles are not your thing, there’s plenty of other

attractions a short distance north of Christchurch, including numerous wineries — most with cellar doors and restaurants — and cafes. Cycle trails, country walks and sculpture gardens also feature, so why not plan a day out and head north.

IN BRIEF: Kings Truffles has more than 6000 trees, and a knowledgeable team passionate about truffles. www.kingstruffles.com Black Estate Wines is organic and biodynamic, and boasts a cellar door, and an excellent restaurant. www.blackestate.co.nz Garden City Helicopters offer a variety of helicopter and fixed wing aircraft scenic packages. www.gchaviation.com

Beauty, body & hair tips Looking for your new favourite product, treatment, hairstyle or workout but not sure where to start? Here are a few inside tips and tricks from local beauty, body and hair experts.

GET YOUR SKIN GLOWING The original gua sha is praised near and far for its ability to chisel out cheekbones you didn’t even know existed, de-puff eye bags, and whack up the dial on skin brightness. But the true magic happens when tradition meets technology. Say hello to the new O-REJUV Gua Sha Facial Device by O Cosmedics. This device lifts, firms, tones, de-puffs and detoxifies the skin. By combining thermal massage, low-level EMS technology, and two LED wavelength therapies, this modern-day Gua Sha results in toned, glowing, healthy skin. Learn more on our website.

DO YOU HAVE AN ITCHY, FLAKY OR IRRITATED SCALP? These are all signs of a dry scalp. It’s more common in winter as there’s less humidity in the air and we are working and living with more indoor heating. Even your styling tools can have an impact. Regularly wash (double shampoo to help lift flakes) and condition your hair with quality salon products to lock in moisture. Avoid washing your hair every day and wear a hat when out in the cold. If this advice isn’t providing any relief don’t be embarrassed. Come into Surreal Hair for a consultation with one of our stylists who are all trained to diagnose scalp conditions and make recommendations for you. 03 365 2215 | surrealhair.beauty@gmail.com www.surrealhair.co.nz | 66 Victoria Street, Christchurch

BEAT THE WINTER BLUES It’s no secret that in winter, it’s hard to get motivated. Mornings are cold and dark, and snoozing the alarm to skip the gym is tempting. Exercise is so beneficial not just for your physical health, but mental health too. Especially in winter when we can find ourselves feeling low. When it comes to fitness, the golden rule is to plan plan plan. Treat your workout like a meeting that you can’t miss. Remember, the hardest part is getting there. If you need some help finding motivation, get in touch with Wigram Culture Fitness Gym. You will love the welcoming, uplifting environment that the friendly team has created.

TattWHO? Tattoos aren’t for everyone, and it appears more and more women are either having them removed or covered over.

A

ustralian-based laser tattoo removal specialists Removery recently reported an increase in people wanting to remove their tattoo in the lead up to their weddings. They say 70 percent of customers are there for a tattoo removal, while 30 percent want a cover up of a tattoo. The most common areas that women are having tattoos removed from are the back, neck and finger. Getting rid of ill-fated ink is no quick fix however. Laser tattoo removal technicians recommend at least two months of treatments for complete removal.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW • Red and yellow are the hardest colours to remove. • It can take up to 8-12 sessions to remove a tattoo depending on the size, ink used, skin tone and after care. • You will need to wait 6-8 weeks between treatments. • A session takes 30 minutes. • The laser removal itself takes 1-2 minutes. • It is less painful than having a tattoo applied but the area will feel tender afterwards. Christchurch has several laser tattoo removal specialists.

For today’s working professionals, facials are not always about luxurious pampering in distant spas at exorbitant prices; nowadays facials are considered as essential as a daily shower.

A

ll skin types experience some dryness and dehydration in winter. Low humidity removes moisture in skin so its natural barrier function is weakened. Beauty Progress uses GERnétic products that contain natural oils which help attain skin suppleness while preventing further dryness and dehydration. GERnétic provides significantly elevated treatment in the areas of superficial skin and deeper muscle firming, lifting, micro-circulation enhancement, as well as hydration of dry to very dry skin. GERnétic recommends a combination of 40 percent regular, on-going salon treatments and 60 percent home-care use of Gernétic products to achieve that much desired healthy, glowing skin. With their fifteenth birthday coming up, Beauty Progress has some exciting treatment packages planned for the spa’s celebrations. On offer is a 75-minute warming foot soak and sea salt scrub, a pain-relieving hand or foot massage, a divine nourishing and hydrating facial, an eye mask to relieve dark circles and puffy eyes, plus an eyelash and eyebrow tint and shape. Normally $256, this birthday package is now $139. Book an appointment at Beauty Progress on 03 379 4315 or visit the website.

Try MINIMALIST Using less makeup doesn’t mean looking any less glowing, feminine or gorgeous.

G

oing minimalistic is all about making the most of natural features, using fewer products, but in smarter way. Luckily there are oodles of tantalising products to buy and try. If in doubt, talk to your favourite beautician and have them do a trial run.

HERE’S A QUICK SIX STEP ROUTINE TO GET YOU GOING:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Fill in brows with a clear gel or brow pencil, then lengthen lashes with a non-clumping mascara.

6.

Finish with lip and eye colour. Try a tinted lip balm, and for the eyes a creamy formula in natural colours.

Clean and tone skin as usual. It’s important to start with a clean canvas. Use a BB cream or tinted moisturiser. Both work well for a light coverage.

KARRA’S THREE TOP SUGGESTIONS FOR DEALING WITH CHRONIC PAIN: 1.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO ACCEPT THE DIAGNOSIS.

We often think accepting chronic pain or a chronic illness will cause us to give up chasing a cure. Actually, the sooner we accept a difficult health diagnosis, the quicker we can become free to pursue healing and a new normal. 2.

O

ne in five adults suffers from chronic pain. In older people, the number rises to three in five. Most of these people don’t realise they don’t have to settle for a survival-based coexistence with their partner or bury their hopes for success and joy under a mountain of heat packs or duvets. So writes author Karra Eloff, who has recorded her own chronic pain journey in an effort to help others. In Christchurch last month to speak at the New Zealand Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society Conference, Karra is the author of The Chronic Pain Couple: How to be a joyful partner & have a remarkable relationship in spite of chronic pain, released this month by Exisle Publishing. A wife and mother, Karra suffers from spondyloarthritis. A health professional based in Australia, she drew on academic research and her own pursuit of joy in spite of suffering to bring write what she describes as “a lowenergy and practical path to a remarkable new normal, for you and your chosen human/partner”. The managing director and co-founder of two private psychology clinics on the East Coast of Australia, she is also the founder of The Chronic Pain Couple, an organisation that delivers practical support to people with chronic pain and their loved ones. "The chronic pain work I do is because I couldn’t find the information I needed to maintain a passion-filled relationship despite chronic pain,” she says. “I wrote the book that I wish that I had 10 years ago when I was diagnosed.” Chronic illness or pain, according to Karra, need not hold you back from experiencing personal joy and success. It is possible to forge a path to remarkable — to move the dial of a relationship challenged with chronic pain from embattled and exhausted to joyful and passion-filled.

PRACTISE SELF-COMPASSION.

Self-compassion is not the same as self-care. Self-compassion is being kind to yourself like you would be to a close friend experiencing the same health struggles. You’re not broken and you’re not a burden to others. You deserve care and support, make sure you remind yourself of that. 3.

FIND YOUR PEOPLE.

Find the health professionals willing to turn over every rock for answers. Make sure you have a mental health professional on your side too and find a good support group. You don’t have to endure chronic pain on your own.

WHAT IS SPONDYLOARTHRITIS? Spondyloarthritis is a group of arthritis conditions that affects bones in the spine (vertebrae) and nearby joints, causing pain and inflammation. Breastfeeding it’s not always easy Breastfeeding is a natural part of life but often doesn’t come naturally at all.

M

ost women struggle at some point in their breastfeeding journey, and few mums manage to achieve the recommended six months of exclusive breastfeeding. With new mums inundated with the public health message ‘breast is best’, the pressure and feelings of failure are very real. That’s a sentiment that was all too familiar for Julia Daly – a certified lactation consultant, mother of three and paediatric nurse. Her business, More than Milk, was born out of a desire to help mums on their breastfeeding journey. After 17 years of working with children and becoming a mother herself, Julia is passionate about the support she can offer other mums in what can be a stressful and confusing time. More than Milk’s first offering – BelleMa breast pumps – were launched while Julia was still working at the hospital as a lactation consultant. This work gave her crucial insight into what Kiwi mums needed, which led to her distributing the “perfect breast pump”.

34 July 7, 2022 Metropol

“I wanted to provide a pump that helped mums increase their supply, saved them from the hassle of hiring and trialling different pumps and ultimately offered them a pain-free experience,” says Julia. Their newest pump, the BelleMa Euphoria Plus, is portable with two motors for easy double-pumping – mums can essentially halve their expressing time. And if there’s one thing new mums need, it’s more time! GETTING THE RIGHT ADVICE WHEN IT COUNTS Julia also offers in-person and online breastfeeding consultations to provide oneon-one support and tailored plans. Midnight Googling when you’re anxious, sleep-deprived and recovering from labour rarely provides the answers you need, which is why Julia developed this service. “A big part of it is helping mums feel confident and at ease while navigating the different challenges. Breastfeeding can be much harder than first expected, and every journey is different,” says Julia.

JULIA’S TOP FIVE TIPS FOR BREASTFEEDING SUCCESS 1. “Feed your baby within the first hour of birth – before they enter post-birth recovery snooze mode.” 2. “Go skin-to-skin. It regulates your new babe’s temperature and helps stimulate your milk-producing hormones. You’ll also notice their feeding cues far more easily in this position.” 3. “Be prepared for an exhausting night or two. Go with the flow as your babe feeds what may seem like constantly. This brings in your milk.” 4. “Master your latch – if you are unsure, ask for help! Nipple tenderness is common for the first 7-10 days, but if it extends beyond this, seek help.” 5. “Get the support you need – If it’s not going well, don’t suffer through it. Breastfeeding isn’t always easy, so get support as soon as you need it.” Struggling with breastfeeding or simply want to be prepared for your journey ahead? Visit More than Milk for free advice and amazing products to support breastfeeding, or book a consultation with Julia.

Research that aims to improve the lives of people living with the experience of disability is now one step closer to creating real, much-needed change right here in Christchurch.

T

he Canterbury Medical Research Foundation (CMRF) recently announced the recipient of their inaugural Emerging Researcher Fellowship, Dr Johnny Bourke from The Burwood Academy. It is without a doubt a monumental opportunity for Dr Bourke and his team, as he explains. “It is an incredible privilege to receive the CRMF Emerging Researcher Fellowship and a really exciting opportunity to conduct research that I believe will make a meaningful change to people’s lives. “Many of the one in five people in Canterbury who report living with disability, require support workers to live their lives every day. “As a person who lives with high-level paralysis, I’ll often ask people to imagine having a person in your life almost all day and having to ask them to complete almost every task you wish to do. “Without good quality disability support workers, disabled people can’t live all aspects of their lives, from getting dressed

to getting about the community and everything in between. “However, the disability support workforce sector is under increasing pressure. Disability support workers are undervalued and finding good quality support workers is becoming harder and the number of people requiring them is increasing.” Dr Bourke’s research aims to understand what makes a good relationship between disabled people and support workers. It will also encompass wider groups including whanau and service providers. “Having a clear understanding of what works for who can help us to ensure everybody feels valued and supported – from the working conditions for support workers to the quality of life for disabled people. Ultimately, by understanding what works for everybody, we hope to help build a more resilient and positive support worker sector,” Dr Bourke explains. This unique research aligns with CMRF on many levels, and so it is an exciting time for both Burwood Academy and the

CMRF team. Foundation Director Melissa Haberfield says, “We are incredibly proud to be able to support a talented local researcher like Dr Bourke, whose work will undoubtedly have a significant impact on people living with the experience of disability every day. As a charitable organisation that receives no government funding this is only possible thanks to the generosity of our donors who share our vision of improving the health and well-being of our people through investment in health research.” The grant, worth up to $200,000 will be awarded annually to an exceptional Canterbury researcher, who is committed to improving the health and well-being not only of New Zealanders but people all around the world. Over the last 62 years, The Canterbury Medical Research Foundation has awarded more than $32 million in Canterbury-based health research funding.

Cellaring wine at home Wine enthusiasts dream about having their own cellar and often it is easy enough to turn dreams into reality.

A

home wine cellar may be as simple as a spare hall cupboard, a section of the pantry or the garage, an upcycle sideboard, or as complex as a complete purpose-built room. Before deciding where to put your cellar, think about temperature. Generally wine likes to be stored at between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius, with humidity between 50 and 80 percent. Direct sunlight is bad for wine, so avoid rooms with lots of windows, although if you do plan to store wine for a long period of time, you’ll need a place with little light, enough humidity to keep corks moist, and cool temperatures. Here are some ideas:

KITCHEN WINE CELLAR Incorporate a wine fridge or a kitchen wine rack into an existing pantry, or add a new one if there’s space.

BUY A WINE CABINET Wine rack cabinets designed specifically for storing wine help save space in a small home or wine cellar.

CLOSET CELLAR Convert a spare closet into a wine cellar, with built-in wine racks, soft lighting, and a tasting table. Finish with a wrought iron door.

REINVENT AND REPURPOSE Old cabinets, dressers and hutches make great stand-alone wine storage. Build shelves, add glass hangers, and a small wine fridge if room.

Roasted roots soup Serves 2 adults + 2-3 children Prep time 15 minutes Cook time 1 hour 10 minutes

Ingredients 1kg pumpkin, skin on, seeds removed 500g orange kūmara, peeled 3 carrots, peeled 1 large onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, roughly chopped

2 teaspoons mild curry powder 400g can coconut milk or cream 500ml homemade (or salt-reduced) chicken or vegetable stock

Method Preheat oven to 200°C and line a tray with baking paper. Cut the pumpkin, kūmara and carrots into 5cm chunks. Toss with a good drizzle of olive oil on prepared tray and roast for about 1 hour, or until very tender. Turn halfway through cooking to ensure even colouring. Heat a good drizzle of olive oil in a large pot over a medium heat. Add onion and cook gently for about 8 minutes until just starting to colour. Stir often to prevent catching and turn down the heat if cooking too quickly (you want to cook long and slow to bring out the natural sweetness of the onions). Add garlic and curry powder and cook, stirring, for another minute.

Scoop the pumpkin flesh from the cooked pumpkin (discard the skin). Add the vegetables to the pot with coconut milk and stock and bring to a simmer. Cook for a few minutes and remove from the heat. Allow to cool slightly then blitz in a blender or with a stick blender until smooth. For adults and older children season to taste with freshly ground pepper and salt. Serve with toast or bread for dipping. Photography by Matt Quérée and Isabella Harrex.

red red

wine BY LYNDA PAPESCH

Sipping a sauvignon takes on a whole new meaning when we’re talking about cabernet sauvignon.

A

rguably the most widely planted red grape variety, cabernet sauvignon is many people’s first venture into the world of red wine. Why red? Research suggests that drinking an occasional glass of red wine is good for you. It provides antioxidants, may promote longevity, and can help protect against heart disease and harmful inflammation, in addition to having higher levels of antioxidants than white wine. Let’s not forget it tastes good, or in some instances amazing. The list of reds is lengthy, and there’s nothing like a drop of montepulciano from Italy, a French merlot, pinot noir or cabernet sauvignon from Bordeaux, Bergerac, Cahors and Languedoc-Roussillon, or syrah, cabernet franc and gamay, most of which are also grown in New Zealand. If you’re not used to reds, here are a few suggestions to guide your taste buds:

CABERNET SAUVIGNON A full-bodied red wine with dark fruit flavours such as black cherry, blackberry, and blackcurrant. It also has savoury notes of spice and black pepper. Aroma notes include vanilla, clove and green pepper.

SYRAH/SHIRAZ Dark, full-bodied wines with dark fruit flavours ranging from sweet blueberry to savoury black olive. Widely grown in Australia where it is called shiraz, it has a spicy peppery aftertaste.

PINOT NOIR A dry, lighter red wine, typically pinot noir has complex flavours that include cherry, raspberry, mushroom and forest floor, plus vanilla and baking spice when aged in French oak.

597 Springs Road, Prebbleton Ph: 03 344 0559 unionfare.eatery@gmail.com www.unionfare.co.nz

MERLOT Merlot is a medium varietal best known for its red-fruit flavours, such as cherry, plum and raspberry, easydrinking tannins and super-soft finish.

MONTEPULCIANO Montepulciano is known for its deep colour, powerful tannins, and strong aromas and flavours. Imagine hints of oregano, pepper, tobacco, and black fruits in a more rustic style wine.

old, wet winter days are the perfect excuse to tuck up and stay warm indoors, and – once the sun is over the yardarm – enjoy a warming shot of your favourite spirit. A “yardarm” is a horizontal bar on the mast of a ship, and in times gone by it was generally assumed (in northern latitudes) that the sun would show above the yardarm by 11am, which was about the time when many officers would slip below for their first drink of the day. pulling the

curtain

Curtains are a great way to decorate your space, as well as increase warmth and privacy. If you are looking to purchase new curtains, here are a few tips and tricks.

LOOK AND FEEL The curtains you choose will change the mood of the room that they go in. Ask yourself a few questions to figure out what you are wanting. A luxurious, romantic feel? Curtains that puddle on the ground may be the right look for you. A cleaner look? Then opt for curtains that graze the floor.

ROOM TO ROOM There's no need to match all of the curtains in your house. For example, in the bedroom, you may opt for blackout lining for better sleep, whereas in living rooms, this probably isn’t necessary. Even if your curtains don’t all match, there are still ways to ensure that your home looks cohesive by using similar materials, patterns, or colors.

ALL ABOUT HEIGHT A great trick is to hang curtains as high as possible to draw the eye upward. Position them at least one-half to two-thirds of the distance between the top of the window frame and the ceiling. This will create the illusion of a higher ceiling and an overall bigger room.

LINING ALWAYS If you are getting custom curtains made, try and get them lined. The sun can fade and damage curtains over time so it's worth protecting your investment by adding a fabric liner. You can also add extra warmth with thermal lining and even additional soundproofing if you live in a noisy area.

Tonal Marble

MURAL LIVING

After two decades of cool greys and whites being the preferred neutrals, there has been a sharp shift.

T

oday, it’s warmer taupes and greiges such as Resene Double Thorndon Cream, Resene Cougar and Resene Craigieburn that have skyrocketed in popularity as the base hues of choice for grounding colour schemes. And it’s understandable; as our lives become increasingly complicated and people have been forced to spend more time at home, it’s natural for us to seek out colours that we find comforting and soothing. Taupe and greige are undeniably cosy and thus fit the bill perfectly. Green is another colour that has become overwhelming popular in the past few years. It was a cool minty version that first re-emerged as a decorating trend – a variation which was then replaced by

46 July 7, 2022 Metropol

soft, silvery sage. But just like neutrals, the most vogue versions are warmer ones, especially those with an olive, army or cargo green character to them such as Resene Half Quarter Karaka, Resene Half Karaka and Resene Evolution. This cosy lounge combines both today’s trending taupes and greens into a gorgeous tonal package. The stage (and colour palette) is set by the show-stealing mural, which is inspired by a swirly marble. But rather than painting it all taupes or all greens, a tide-line approach has been taken across the centre of the wall, where the top half has been kept neutral and the bottom half features deeper, greener tones. The effect not only creates more interest and visually grounds the space, it also offers two different palettes to accessorise the space with.

Cool beans While there are many espresso machines to choose from, Breville’s latest offering – the Express Impress makes drinking cafe-quality coffees at home extremely simple. Metropol’s over-caffeinated gadget guru Ian Knott goes without sleep for about a month.

I

spend too much on coffee. Long gone are the days when you could get a decent fix for $3.50. Most are in the $7$10 range these days and it soon adds up if you’re grabbing even just one a day. So when the chance to review the Breville Express Impress came up, my tastebuds, and more importantly my bank account, got excited. The Express Impress takes a lot of the manual guesswork out of making a good coffee. It remembers the favoured dosage and grinds the beans from the hopper to suit. As any barista will tell you, there is an art to tamping the grinds down. The correct pressure and a slight seven degree twist is what’s required. A tamping arm on the side of the machine provides the perfect

tamp, as easy as pulling the handle on a slot-machine. A double extraction head then pours a single or double shot of perfect syrupy espresso into a shot glass or directly into your cup, which can be pre-warmed on the heated top of the machine. You still need to do your milk manually with the provided milk jug, but I find this all part of the fun. Do your milk just right and you feel like you’ve earned your coffee. There are some fantastic milk and latte art tutorials on YouTube, be sure to check them out. For a shade under $1000, the Express Impress will pay for itself in no time, even if you are a casual cafe customer. And it’s clever enough to remember just how you like your favourite brew.

BREVILLE EXPRESS IMPRESS ESPRESSO MACHINE • Small footprint on your bench, but big enough to navigate around easily. • Remembers the correct dose of coffee grinds. • Tamping arm provides the perfect amount of pressure every time. • Large refillable water tank. • Available in silver or black. • Comes with several accessories to make any coffee you like. • Drip tray prevents any accidental spillages.

WARM UP WITH

wool rugs The chilly months have arrived, and you may be dreading the feeling of walking on your cold, hard floors.

W

arm your feet and add comfort by adding a beautiful wool area rug into your living or work spaces. There is no doubt that when those extra frosty days arrive, you and your household will be thanking you! Released for the winter of 2022, Wools of New Zealand and Rugs for All have collaborated to create a collection of New Zealand Wool Area Rugs with a range of bindings. The area rug

collections are available exclusively on the Rugs for All website. Their ethos is that all New Zealanders should be able to afford a 100 percent New Zealand Wool Carpet Area Rug. Wools of New Zealand is one hundred percent grower owned, and believes that wool carpet and rugs shouldn’t cost the earth. They are on a mission to reintroduce Kiwis to nature’s wonder fibre and its many benefits.

Here are just a few of the benefits of having a wool area rug in your home:

Wool adds warmth

Wool stays clean

Wool pile is resilient

Wool stays dry

Wool is hypoallergenic

Wool is an excellent thermal insulator and helps moderate temperature and humidity in the home by absorbing and releasing moisture as needed.

Naturally stain-resistant and cleanable, wool has a natural coating of lanolin, which keeps stains and dirt from penetrating the fibres. These fibres also mean that wool doesn’t need to be cleaned as often as other fabrics.

The natural crimp in each wool fibre allows a wool rug to resist the compression of daily use, so you have fewer issues with furniture indentation than with other fabrics. It also has high wear and tear and is naturally very durable.

Rugs for All is owned by Carpetbinders, a family-owned business based in Christchurch. They have a combined knowledge of over 100 years in binding and edging of carpets and the retailing rugs that are predominantly wool.

Wool is naturally waterresistant and can absorb water spills and still feel dry to the touch. It can absorb up to 30 percent of its weight in moisture, which helps to create a dry home and reduce heating costs.

Find them at the Home Ideas Centre, 37 Mandeville Street, Riccarton, showcasing Wools of New Zealand wall to wall carpets and the Wools of New Zealand and Rugs for All Area Rug Initiative.

The pockets in wool fibre help it absorb dust. It also resists dust mites, mildew, and bacteria growth, and even absorbs many airborne contaminants. Wool is great for asthma sufferers, as it absorbs indoor air toxins too.

A good night’s sleep is vital for humans to function properly, and given most of us spend one third of our lives in bed, it is essential to invest in the very best.

A

n average person sleeps for eight hours in a day. That means that on average they will sleep for 229,961 hours (one third of the average life span) in their lifetime. Having a quality bed makes sleeping more relaxing, more enjoyable and is better for the body, says David Henderson of Dreamwool Beds. “A bed is the most important piece of furniture in the house. It doesn’t matter what age or stage you’re at - engaged, married, single, you still need a good night’s sleep. Think of it as a long-term investment.” His advice is to buy a buy a decent bed as soon as you can. Satisfied client Pam agrees. She and her husband have slept on a Dreamwool Bed for several years now and can’t speak highly enough of them.

They’ve recommended them to friends who also agree. “Previously we’d always bought other brand quality beds which proved no good at all. We’d wake up hot, sweaty and out of sorts,” she explains. Once they decided to buy a Dreamwool bed there was no going back. “We noticed the difference straight away. We were well supported, comfortable and didn’t get up the next morning folded up like a half-shut pocket knife. We also love that it is New Zealand made, using natural products.” Her advice: “Don’t go for price over quality.” PICK YOUR MATTRESS Key to a good sleep is having the right bed and mattress which is where Dreamwool Beds can help. David says there is no better way to spend nights than sleeping soundly on a mattress filled with generous layers of soft,

luxurious Merino wool sourced directly from select South Island farms. “Dreamwool mattresses provide optimum comfort and temperature control, enabling you to get to a deeper sleep, faster.” It is the combination of pure Merino wool, natural latex infused with activated charcoal, thousands of delicate microcoils and supportive pocket-springs that provides sleepers with the perfect microclimate for any season: cool, moisturewicking confidence in summer and warm, luxurious comfort in winter. “It’s like sleeping on a cloud,” David adds. To sort your perfect bed and mattress, visit the Dreamwool Beds showroom at 96 Disraeli Street, Sydenham or call 0800 753 754.

Bathroom design and flair Renovating a bathroom takes teamwork and know-how.

W

hile Kiwis are renowned for their DIY abilities, sometimes it pays to have experts on the job. Bathroom revamping is one area where specialist expertise will save time, money and stress. Leading the field in Christchurch, with more than 40 years’ experience in the business, is family owned and operated Butterfield Bathrooms. A specialist bathroom renovation company, it offers a complete Christchurch bathroom renovation service, from initial consultation and design through to the installation process, and a comprehensive follow up. “We are responsible for project management and full renovation, so you can be assured that we are always in control,” explains Guy Butterfield. “We are highly experienced in all matters related to bathrooms. That means we are happy to assist with all your renovation and maintenance requirements, from water damaged rotten floors through to shower and vanity replacement. Excelling in efficiency and design flair, the company works independently for clients. Guy’s background in process engineering proves invaluable for design input. Project managing is a key component of any job, he adds. “Bathrooms are a complicated renovation, with up to seven trades in a small space. You need to be incredibly systemised.

A team effort Many a Kiwi business has started in a garage, as did Butterfield Bathrooms. After working with his father Neil, a builder with 40 years experience, and his brother Mark, Guy saw a niche opportunity for bathroom renovations and the company was born. Neil and Mark are still part of the company, working in their respective fields of expertise. Also on board is design consultant Martin Lodge, who has partnered with Guy since the beginning. They’ve moved out of

the garage and now operate from premises at 223a Annex Road, in Middleton. Martin, who hails from Cornwall, will discuss each client’s vision, do a full scope, detailed design and elevation with 3D drawings, then pull it all together. “He’s incredibly passionate about colours and styles, and expert in fixtures and fittings - which really make a bathroom. Our designs come without the cost of an architect’s plan, as it’s part of our package. Project manager Nathan Tunnah is expert at juggling multiple assignments. “He’s a qualified builder and passionate colour consultant,” says Guy.

The team also includes four builders, a plasterer, and a painter, and a work partnership with RJ Plumbing. “Our locked-in efficient weekly system has all our tradesmen pre-booked. We can get wall linings and timber promptly, as suppliers always have our required amounts. Three weeks to complete a vinyl bathroom is realistic,” says Guy. “We provide real comparative costs, and explain our full package from design right the way through, with no obligation.”

Ahead Curve Curves bring a fresh and soft wavy feeling into the home, and interior trends are showing more and more use of these rounded features.

F

rom curved corners within walls and cabinets to curved backs of couches and chairs, arched cabinets, mirrors, and accessories, it’s all about curves in the interior world right now. The trend started in 2019 and has continued to gain popularity. Curves create instant softness, and they make us feel cocooned, safe, and warm. The sleek silhouettes embrace softness instead of the rigidity that comes with sharp lines. Here are a few tips to bring the curved trend into your home:

START SMALL If you don’t want to invest in bigger furniture items, you can still incorporate curves with smaller accessories. Try an accent chair, lamp, ottoman, mirror, headboard, or side table that has rounded edges and curvy qualities.

GO BOLD Curved furniture is a statement in itself, but if you want to go out then you can enhance this even more by opting for a bold fabric. Velvet is popular with curved couches, or you could try a fun pattern for a round ottoman or curved headboard.

TRY FLOATING Due to the shape and angles of curved furniture, they don’t look so good pushed hard against a wall. Whether it’s a curved sofa or chair, try floating it off the wall, more toward the center of the room, or just slightly off the wall to create some space for the curve.

ARCHITECTURAL If you are looking for a more permanent feature in your home, curved entryways or built-in cabinets and consoles with rounded edges are a statement that can elevate the design of a home. It takes a bit more work and money, but a great option when renovating and refreshing.

canine cough

A CASE O F

It’s definitely that time of year when coughs, colds, and flus become common. And unfortunately, for pets too.

C

anine cough, also known as kennel cough, can describe several bacterial or viral conditions causing a cough in dogs, much like a cold in humans. Usually a loud hacking cough, it can sound like something is caught in their throat. This is often viral or can be bacterial, and it is highly contagious to other dogs only. Usually, with kennel cough, affected dogs are otherwise bright and happy, have no temperature, and are eating normally. VetChat, a leading telehealth service for pets wants all New Zealand dog owners to be aware of the symptoms

and treatments for kennel cough. CEO Dr Claire Jenkins says, “There are vaccinations for canine cough but they do not provide 100 percent cover. Like the flu, even if your dog is vaccinated against the common strains, they are often not 100 percent protected, and there are other causative strains for the cough.” “Depending on the case and whether your dog has concurrent disease, treatment often involves antiinflammatories, sometimes antibiotics, rest and isolation from other dogs.” “If your dog presents with a cough, please keep your dog away from other dogs and call your Vet for advice to find out what the best approach is.”

NEED TO KNOW The main symptom is a consistent, forceful cough Apart from coughing, your dog shouldn’t feel ill and should still have a good appetite Kennel cough is highly contagious and can easily be spread from one dog to another Kennel cough usually clears up within three weeks, but can take up to six weeks Most cases shouldn’t need treatment, but if you are worried your vet can advise

“IT REALLY IS AMAZING!” MicroMed has changed the lives of pets around New Zealand

Excellent product and excellent people to deal with. I was pleased to have a more natural product and to be able to simply spray it onto his food twice a day for 2 weeks, with immediate results. I would reccomend MicroMed to anyone with pets. I contacted MicroMed after my less than 1 year old Border Terrier had two ear infections and was beginning to gnaw at his front paw too frequently. I want to share what a swift impact this amazing product has had on his health. Ears are clear, no more chewing, healthy, happy little guy again! It really is amazing! My cats were having separate problems. Merlin was having skin issues, and his ears had gone completely bald. Your acute product has almost completely resolved this! Lifechanging pet supplement In May of 2010, qualified veterinary nurse Fiona Robertson’s adored Newfoundland dog, Rosie, was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM), a terminal heart condition common in the breed.

D

etermined to not give up on Rosie and wanting to improve her quality of life, if not life expectancy, Fiona’s research into the benefits of fish oil ultimately saw her establish her own business. “Newflands was born from my desire to find a fish oil supplement that was ethically sourced, and paramount was that it was a sustainable New Zealand product,” Fiona says.

Fiona began her trials using a refined human-grade product on her dogs; the results were astounding. “Rosie’s arrhythmia was better controlled and her coat and skin health improved greatly.” These hoki oil supplements are high in essential omega-3 fatty acids and have a whole food ratio of EPA:DHA to help support mental clarity, joint lubrication, skin, brain and heart health.

Put your best paw forward Professional grooming Doggie daycare Excellent indoor/outdoor facilities

“Rosie got an extra three years of life from when she began taking the fish-oil, which was a huge turnaround from the initial prognosis given to her.” Thanks to Fiona’s dedication to Rosie, dogs and cats nationwide are maintaining better health and really love taking their medicine.

Improve instead of move As homeowners, it’s a reality that sometimes we outgrow our homes or fall out of love with our homes. They no longer fit with how we live our lives. This then leads to the dilemma of deciding whether you’ll take on a renovation project with the existing property or start from scratch to achieve the dream home you desire. Before taking the plunge, there are a few things to consider: Love your current location

H

ome is about more than just the house we live in. It’s about being able to drop in next door when you need to borrow a cup of sugar, having friendly chats with our neighbours, or popping into your favourite local café. Many homeowners are choosing to stay in the neighbourhood they love and embark on a home renovation to make their current home work for them now and in the future. If your home is older, you may need to update your kitchen, bathroom, living space, improve the layout or add an extension.

Increase the value of your home

Future proof your home

Selling your home might not be on the top of your mind right now, but regardless of changing and fluctuating market conditions, it’s never a bad idea to renovate your home. Beautifully designed and well executed house renovations can add significant value to your home, usually well beyond the cost of the improvements.

Our city and towns are full of beautiful character and older homes. But what worked 50 or 60 years ago probably isn’t working as well for us now. Your home might have an unusual layout, small bedrooms, or one bathroom. If this sounds familiar, and you plan to live in and enjoy it for many years to come, then some timely house renovations to future proof your home are probably worth considering.

You might be wondering, in the midst of uncertain times, is 2022 a good time to renovate? The answer is yes. If you’re considering house renovations, then the current climate presents an excellent opportunity for homeowners to improve, instead of move. Ready to take the leap? The team at Build Right – the Home Renovation specialists are the people to talk to. Call them now for a free in-home consultation.

Winter in Christchurch

A win for us all

It feels like we’ve passed a milestone once we get past the shortest day, but I often find that’s when the truly cold weather arrives.

It has been great to hear the stories of local businesses beginning to notice positive effects to trade, as a result of the centre being operational.

H

aving four distinct seasons, however, is one of the things I love about living in Christchurch. With the July school holidays about to start there are some fantastic events happening across the city that are well worth braving the cold for. The Winter Fireworks Spectacular at New Brighton on Saturday 9 July will set things off with a real bang. Moving this event to winter really does make sense, with the earlier time so much easier for families. We’re also really fortunate to have KidsFest in our city offering hundreds of activities, workshops and events to keep our younger folk entertained, informed and educated.

This two-week festival has been running for three decades and it’s the envy of towns and cities across the country. A newer event on the winter calendar, and a chance to showcase our magnificent Christchurch Town Hall to a younger audience, is the Go Live Festival later this month. Two nights of concerts for all ages will be featuring some incredible homegrown musical talent. So, while it might be cold outside there is a real buzz about our city in winter. I suggest that you invite family, friends and even colleagues to layer up and enjoy some of what’s on offer in our amazing city.

W

e’re thrilled to finally be playing our part in the regeneration of the city. For the remainder of the year – in fact until this time next year – the calendar is looking full, meaning the benefits will continue to flow for local businesses. But with a full event calendar, comes the need for staff to service those events. While we have a fantastic team of casual, part-time and permanent staff, business has bounced back stronger than expected, so we are looking to employ more people ahead of schedule. Like many in our industry, we have not been immune to the recruitment challenges currently facing

the hospitality and events sector. With many of those with hospitality experience leaving the industry during Covid-19, the challenge now is to recruit new talent. As part of the ASM Global family, we are fortunate to be able to offer international job and career opportunities for staff through our worldwide network, and we hope this will entice those who have been thinking about the hospitality sector to give it, and us, a go. We are out in market for several roles now, with more to follow. If you, or someone you know have ever considered a move into events or hospitality, be it for a casual role or a career, now is the time to get in touch.

Economic booster

Shared transport impact

The biggest challenge facing Christchurch businesses is the labour shortage. This is one of the economic factors contributing to inflation, which we are all experiencing.

The impact of shared transport on two different Christchurch communities could determine transport goals for New Zealand

C

hristchurchNZ has been working on two initiatives to help reduce the impact of the shortages. Last week we launched the PowerUp campaign, designed to inform, inspire, and connect women on their career journeys, with a focus on those who have been unemployed for extended periods of time. Following a labour market hui we held with local Canterbury businesses at the end of 2021, women were identified as one group who are currently underemployed and underutilised so PowerUp was designed to support women into work. The insights of that industry hui also heavily influenced the delivery of an advocacy paper around the skills shortage. Alongside the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of

Commerce, we made the case for more skilled migration that focused on the most severely affected industry sectors — manufacturing and hi-tech. These two sectors are strategically important due to their significant number of high-value jobs, export revenue, growth potential and contribution to regional prosperity. The advocacy paper called on Government to approve 5500 additional skilled migrant visas in those sectors over the next 12 months. Having shown the need, we recruited and supported industry spokespeople as we made our pitch to business reporters, resulting in national stories in NBR, RNZ, and BusinessDesk, which may yet move the Government’s position.

I

’m leading a team of researchers studing two National Science Challenges – Ageing Well and Healthier Lives – to understand the impact of shared transport options into a lifestyle village and a community housing trust on those communities. Current transport systems and accessibility are not sustainable due to inequity of accessibility, greenhouse gas emissions and congestion. The study aims to answer the question: If people share vehicles, what impact does that have on them, their mobility and wellbeing? When people share vehicles, they may make a slightly better decision, which produces good outcomes for climate emissions. They may decide to walk or take the bus.

Or, if they take the car, they may choose to do more on the journey. However, we don’t want those decisions to be at the expense of wellbeing. Shared fleets of vehicles are often electric and used more often; meaning they are replaced earlier, tend to be safer and cleaner and result in people not worrying about on-road or maintenance costs – all leading to positive wellbeing. Most of those living in the lifestyle village were fairly affluent and more active, they still felt inadequate transport limited their ability to do all the things they wanted, while cost posed the biggest barrier for those in the community trust. The study has been running for over a year, with another 2.5 years to go.

real estate from the & the

head heart

Be it emotional or analytical, much is made of the reasons people transact real estate. When purchasing or deciding to purchase there is often robust debate about the rationale for someone’s decisions. The parties involved can be vendors, buyers, real estate consultants, lawyers, valuers, building inspectors and can now include digital valuation systems. Everyone wants to play a part, as well as have a say, and it’s a crowded and often confusing space. If it’s an investment property, there’s often a predetermined strategy based on the financial benefits or otherwise of the purchase, and this can be seen in a ‘dollars and cents’, ‘return versus costs’ framework. People usually know the rules. If they spend too much on the purchase or during renovation and they don’t sell for a certain amount, then the end result will often be disappointment. You see this particular scenario played out most weeks, however the market we have enjoyed over the past 18 months saw the reverse of this: astronomical figures achieved regardless of the initial cost of the property and subsequent investment. But not everything is analytical. In fact, some of the biggest motivations for people to buy or sell are deeply emotional and might make sense only to them. Examples I’ve noted over the years have included the purchase of neighboring properties.

The disparaging ‘nosey neighbor’ label gets bandied about more than I care for, but I’ve seen significant prices paid by neighbors who wanted to protect boundaries or views, or wanted other family members to live close by. They believed in the value of the location and in some cases had waited patiently for the opportunity. Owners that chose to sell at auction often achieved wonderful premiums because of this. Another emotional factor I’ve witnessed is the acrimonious split, where you see two common scenarios: the ‘I don’t care because I’m off to a better life’ and the ‘I’ll fight you every step of the way because I feel betrayed and belittled’. The skill required to navigate these situations with care and professionalism isn’t the domain of everyone and I’d always suggest doing significant due diligence to find a professional who has the skill to look after all parties whilst delivering the best result, because there may be an emotional minefield ahead. And before you think it can’t be done, it can; I’ve seen it. But for me, perhaps the most emotional of all sales transactions are the ones involving couples who – having lived long and wonderful lives together – must sell to move into supportive care. You walk through properties full of nostalgic memories, photos, books, furniture, mementoes and ‘stuff’. The stuff of life and you realize on their behalf how hard it is. That’s when emotion really comes to the fore. In one example that comes to mind, I had the enormous privilege of meeting a couple that had lived a full

and valued life, but it was time to move. They worry, have they left it too late? And (this is common) I worry that we have a deadline hanging over us requiring a sale by a certain date so they can move to the residential village. Their friends worry about auctioning, which we believed was the best process due to the deadlines just mentioned – and the nature of their property – and their family worry about all the things families lose sleep over when they have elderly parents. Economics are important, of course, but the emotional factors in all of this are much more important. So why share this? It could be that I want our elderly clients to move safely and with dignity to their new home. It could be because my own parents are now at that age and although they tell me in no uncertain terms that they are never moving, I worry every winter. Or it could be that no matter what any of us think, people will make their own decisions. It might be purely financially driven or it might be deeply emotional. It’s important to find out which it is before you wade in. And for real estate professionals working in this space, know what’s best, do that and more, and remember that life is a mixture of facts and feelings.

Greater design oversight needed An international architect and urban planning specialist is calling for the reinstatement of a century-old government agency to provide strategic design oversight as New Zealand’s largest cities enter a period of rapid housing intensification.

T

he position of “Government Architect”, which headed the Ministry of Works and Development’s architectural division, was disestablished 20 years ago when the ministry was closed. Patrick Sloan, founder of Sloan Architects and whose 30-year career includes over 150 projects in 20 countries, says historically the Government Architect’s role was to advise government on all aspects of architecture, building and the built environment, including policies for the design of and expenditure on governmentfunded and operated facilities.

He says from August, the Resource Management (Enabling Housing Supply and Other Matters) bill will require councils to allow townhouses of up to three storeys with up to three dwellings on almost all residential sites in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Tauranga, and Hamilton, without the need for resource consent. Modelling shows the new medium density rules could see more than 100,000 new dwellings built in the next eight years. Sloan says adding thousands of three level residential dwellings in our major centres is not without risk. “Within the coming weeks we will see the start of an urban ‘gold rush’,

with property developers able to take advantage of new housing density rules. “The risk is that we will see substandard developments proceed that make little or no contribution to the neighbourhoods and communities that we all live in. “Architectural merit isn’t limited to how a building appears or performs. It’s also about having a positive impact on the character of our streets and the public realm, and the safeguarding of a shared urban identity. “What we need is visionary thinking and design leadership that looks decades into the future – this would come from the Government Architect.”

Think local The construction industry is doing it tough right now, with kinks in the supply chain combined with a market slump for labour.

L

ocal suppliers, always a useful but perhaps undervalued resource, have emerged as heroes, keeping projects moving when the international players are meeting barriers. One such local superstar is Moore Construction. A Commercial Piling and Civil Structures Specialist, in collaboration with Hi-Stress Concrete, a pre-stressed concrete supply workshop. They can supply piles, rib and infill, bridge beams, and all manner of precast elements, all over the South Island. “We have an ever-expanding range of piling and civil equipment and can design and construct all manner of commercial and residential piling,” says Sam Moore.

Their specialties include timber, concrete, and steel driven piles, screw piles, CFA, bored piles (permanent and temporary cased), secant, and sheet piles. As well as piling, recent civil structure products for the team at Moore include, concrete bridges, retaining structures, and stormwater management. “Our staff are incredible, very experienced and capable. Technical challenges that require problem solving on site and from the management team is what drives us. Successfully completing projects that exceed client expectations is always the goal, and finding clever solutions for problems is one of the ways we can achieve that,” says Sam.

A solid foundation The Canterbury earthquake sequence highlighted the importance of geotechnical investigations followed by a good foundation design.

W

hen building a new house or extension, there is as much engineering input required as there is architectural design. A myriad of aspects needs to be considered, from the state of the land on which the house’s foundation sits, to whether the design itself is structurally sound and sustainable. All these elements are integrated into what the multi-faceted engineering company, Cook Costello, can offer homeowners and has been doing so for more than 45 years. Cook Costello delivers a comprehensive package of undoubted quality, and at a competitive price. With years of experience in providing specialist geotechnical services, Cook Costello recognises that a successful project starts with a good understanding of the ground. The company, in partnership with its sister organisation GeoCivil, has its own

IANZ-accredited soil testing laboratory that can provide clients with sound and reliable advice regarding land performance. It’s one of the very few engineering consultancies in the South Island that has this testing capability in-house. Cook Costello has teams of experienced structural and geotechnical engineers who work together to design foundations that meet New Zealand standards. There is a saying that a good foundation should go unnoticed, just like a good football referee. Investment in a thorough site investigation and the subsequent construction of a suitably robust foundation to suit the ground - where structural engineering expertise is required - will not be visible in the finished development. This investment, however, assures that a building has been constructed on a stable foundation, thereby reducing risk, increasing resilience for future earthquake events, and giving peace of mind to owners

and occupants. GeoCivil and Cook Costello provide the complete package of structural and geotechnical engineering combined with high-quality testing services from highly skilled and trained geotechnical technicians. Testing services are offered to cover a broad range of options, from shallow investigations using hand-held equipment to deep investigations using mechanical drilling rigs and more advanced laboratory testing for more challenging ground conditions. Cook Costello will work with you to obtain a building consent. They will test the ground according to New Zealand standards and design site-specific, costeffective and appropriate foundations. If you have a building project in the future you can contact Cook Costello at 03 365 5960.

Keeping Antarctica green New Zealanders have voted to keep Scott Base the same green it has been since 1965.

T

he iconic colour received 4514 votes from the 10,830 Kiwis and honorary penguins that made the choice between green, orange and blue. Orange — or rescue orange as it was dubbed by supporters keen to keep people safe and save the planet — came second with 3742 votes, then blue with 2574 votes. The vote allowed our Antarctic community and New Zealanders to be part of the design process during the Scott Base Redevelopment, which will see the current, aging buildings replaced with a fit-for-purpose base powered by 97 percent

renewable energy. This means supporting science there for another 50+ years. “The colour will link two eras of New Zealand science,” said project director Jon Ager. “The special connection that Kiwis have with Scott Base has been abundantly clear during the vote. We will move towards construction knowing people are behind us and, one day, everyone that voted will be able to say: I helped to shape Scott Base.”

WHO VOTED? The vote opened during an Antarctica-themed Science Week in primary schools, which saw classrooms talking to the Scott Base overwintering crew, learning from polar scientists and undertaking their own experiments. Votes came in from the length of the country but it was Canterbury — home of the Antarctic Gateway city of Christchurch, and Timaru where the new base will be built — which rallied around the vote, with 2475 people having their say about the colour of Scott Base. Not far behind, 2037 people adopted Antarctica as their postcode; Auckland contributed 2021 votes, Wellington 1432, Waikato 556 and Otago 546 votes.

Buying or selling a home? Don’t let the dream vanish down the drain.

W

hen it comes to buying or selling a home, drains are not necessarily something many of us consider – but we probably should. “Damaged drains are a constant problem for both buyers and sellers in the greater Christchurch area,” explains Josh Mackey, owner of MHR Drainage. “Emergency drainage repairs carried out following the earthquakes, which were only ever designed to be temporary, may well be failing now. Our team carries out diagnostic tests daily and about half the homes we visit show earthquake-related damage to the drains.” Combine this with the fact that thousands of homes in Christchurch still have undiagnosed problems with drains and a big red flag should

Painting Perfection Painting, plastering and

be raised for buyers. There is, however, some good news, Josh explains. “Damaged drains are still covered by EQC, even if your 2010/2011 claim has been settled. Plus, there is no cut-off date for lodging a claim relating to drainage. So, the best solution for vendors is to have an inspection done before listing your home on the market. Then if there are problems, these can be rectified through the EQC system. Similarly, for a home buyer, a simple drain inspection as part of your due diligence provides peace of mind and helps avoid costly complications down the line.” For more information on drain inspections – call the team at MHR Drainage on 0800 356 946.
