Working together

For the last decade, New Brighton’s retail centre has been Christchurch’s poor relation, a far cry from its heyday as a popular beach destination.

Earthquake damage, land banking, and a lack of community consensus have all contributed to what was once

NATIONAL MULTI-AWARD WINNERS 2013 - 2019

a thriving seaside settlement deteriorating into a ramshackle collection of businesses with no holistic identity.

Hopefully that is about to change, with the latest plans being aired for a $2.3 million mall revamp. I say ‘hopefully’ because proposals have been put forward before, and not gone ahead, mainly because of land banking, and those involved not being able to agree on key aspects.

I am proud to say that I live in New Brighton, in ‘The Hood’, and, like many others there, I believe it has a bright future as a vibrant seaside destination.

A dedicated team of locals is trying to move forward with the new plans, and this is where

Metropol is published every fortnight and Metropol Build is published every month. It is delivered to the best addresses in the Christchurch and Canterbury region. It is also available from many selected stores, malls, stands, waiting rooms and o ces. Metropol is subject to copyright in its entirety. Reproduction in whole or in part without permission will result in legal action.

Every e ort is made to ensure the accuracy and

community consensus is vitally important. The time for New Brighton’s community to band together for the greater good is now. Without that happening, there can be no real progress.

Think about the big picture, and about the economic gains for the township, if nothing else.

On another note, ANZAC Day has just been commemmorated, and it was gratifying to see so many turn out to mark the sacrifices made by previous generations. Young and old alike made the pilgrimage to local war memorials throughout greater Christchurch, in memory of family members past and present, helping to ensure that we never forget what they did for us.

The first in his family to attend university, YBhg Datuk Mark James Stewart PJN (Kehormat), MNZM, FNZIM, has just added another title to his already lengthy list.

His alma mater’s honorary doctorate recognises not only his original 1984 Bachelor of Commerce degree (with a major in Business Administration), it also pays tribute to his highly successful business career.

“I was destined for a career in the family business, and I easily could’ve had a job straight out of school, but there was no doubt I would go on to the University of Canterbury,” he says.

“I wanted to go to university. It was something I could earn myself, which wasn’t ‘the boss’s son being anointed,’ so to speak. For me, it was a great maturity exercise. I was like many typical students, especially in those times, who had a great social time. You come out of university with a lifelong set of friends that you grew up with and matured with. They’re quite formative years – especially when you’ve come out of an all-boys boarding school. You’re learning through that period, not only about academia but about life, about people and about what you want to do.”

The son of the late manufacturing pioneer Sir Robertson Stewart, and Dame Adrienne Stewart, Mark recalls he wanted to take the summer off after his final exams, but that wasn’t going to happen, he says.

“My final exam was a Friday in early November, and I was going to take off until the end of January, and then start working for the family business. My dad said to me: ‘Sorry son, you start on Monday’. So literally had the weekend off and straight into work, and I don’t think I’ve ever stopped working since.”

Mark left New Zealand in 1985, aged 22, to work in Malaysia. “Those were the days before cell phones. The fax machine had only just been invented.”

He has served as Honorary Consul for Malaysia and received a PJN (Distinguished Order of Meritorious Service), bestowing him the title of Datuk, the equivalent of a knighthood from the Malaysian King, for outstanding service to the country.

“My parents were like that, and as a family we like to do that.”

The last 20 years have seen Mark involved with a lot of community ventures. He led the Hororata Community Trust in 2010, which created the Hororata Highland Games and Hororata Night Glow Balloon Festival as a way of fundraising for the local community after the September 2010 earthquake hit the district hard.

Over a 40-year commercial career, Mark has been a director of a number of publicly listed companies and, through his family investment company Masthead Ltd, has extensive investments across a range of different industries.

“When you get something like an honorary doctorate, you look back and realise you don’t have to be the brightest guy in the class, you’ve just got to work hard and take the opportunities as they come,” he says.

A common thread throughout his life and career is a desire to give back. In 2016, he generously supported University of Canterbury (UC) students by funding a US Study Abroad programme, and provided support for the UC Business School’s 21-Day Challenge.

This challenge gathered teams of students from across the university to solve a problem in a Pacific nation.

He was named the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme – Canterbury Mentor of the Year in 2006, and was also a mentor for the UC 21-Day Challenge programme in 2015.

“I’m a great believer in giving back to the community, especially if you’re successful. It has been instilled in me my entire life.

Currently chair of the Antarctic Heritage Trust, the ChristChurch Cathedral Reinstatement project, and of TAB NZ Ltd, he is also the Honorary Consul for Malaysia, a trustee of the NZ Olympic Foundation, the Hororata Community Trust, and the NZ Dementia Prevention Trust.

Other accolades include a New Zealand Order of Merit for services to sport and the community, and an impressive list of business positions.

Kendra Cocksedge, a true rugby icon who has committed her life to the sport, talks with Metropol writer Nina Tucker.

Not only New Zealand’s most capped Black Fern, Kendra also stands out for her passion to get more women onto the field. She grew up playing rugby with the boys as the numbers of girl teammates dwindled as the play got rougher. Kendra is now determined to change the landscape of women’s rugby, and make it something she wished she had growing up. “A four-year-old ‘Kendra’ can play rugby with her friends, and it can all be girls. It’s a gift given to me.” Following the historymaking World Cup victory, Kendra and her teammates have created a legacy that inspires girls and women to tackle male dominated sports. “There were a lot of arguments that we can’t fill a stand. We’ve proven that wrong,” she confirms.

“Rugby hasn’t really started yet but everyone wants a piece of it. We’ve inspired a nation.”

Kendra may have retired from the Black Ferns, but her devotion to the game is only getting stronger. With a goal to make women’s rugby more accessible, her role as the South Island Women’s Rugby Development Manager

gives her the power to put her plans into action. Kendra’s most excited about seeing more girls get involved following the momentum of the World Cup, as new clubs and teams emerge.

Despite her impressive achievements, three-time Rugby World Cup champion, Kendra remains humble, noting that the relationships she made along the way were life changing. “The people you meet, the places you go, it’s incredible,” she says.

“It’s a team sport, for us as Black Ferns, we’ve all gone through the same struggles, and it just connects you.” It didn’t come without sacrifice, Kendra says that the demands of her training schedule diminished her social life, but she gained “lifelong friendships through the game.”

Retirement was the right decision, she says, and she’s “not missing the game.” While playing on the world stage was incredible, there were challenges that came with it. Amongst the need to train well, eat well and recover well, all while maintaining her full-time job with New Zealand Rugby, Kendra admitted she faced mental pressures. “I always wanted to be the greatest,

be the best.” Looking back, Kendra said she would encourage her 19-year-old self to have more fun.

“I just flipped into a real serious high-performance mindset, but throughout I lost a few years of enjoyment and fun.”

Kendra is finally relaxing after years of a strict lifestyle. She says she’s “still adjusting” to postprofessional life, but loves finishing her day with a glass of wine, guiltfree. She’s now prioritising herself, spending time with friends and family, watching school-girl rugby, and loving every second of it. What’s next for Kendra? As the kind of person who wants to “do everything” she’s one to watch.

Our fingers are crossed that we’ll see her on the screens again as she’s exploring opportunities for coaching, “I’ve got a lot of knowledge and skill to give back. Maybe next year.”

With an autobiography on the horizon, and so many goals in the women’s rugby space, Kendra shows no signs of stopping the push for women’s rugby awareness, involvement, and equality. She has even given Metropol her number for anyone who needs persuasion to pick up a rugby ball.

Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to show your mum just how much you appreciate her.

For each of us, our mother has given up many things to make sure we have a happy childhood, and succeed in life. One day a year there is a reminder to show our appreciation for everything our mothers have done - Mother’s Day.

One of the best ways to celebrate Mother’s Day in Christchurch is by taking her out for a delicious meal. There are plenty of great restaurants in the city, from cosy cafes to fine dining establishments, that offer special Mother’s Day menus. You could even surprise her with a hand-made picnic in one of our city’s beautiful parks or gardens.

If your mum is a fan of the arts, why not take

her to a show or exhibition? Local art galleries and theatres have amazing exhibitions, and a variety of shows throughout the year.

Or you could mum to a sip and paint class to test out her (and your) artistic skills.

For a more active day out, you could take your mum on a scenic walk or bike ride. Christchurch is home to many beautiful parks and nature reserves, such as Hagley Park and the Port Hills, which offer stunning views of the city and the surrounding countryside.

No matter what you choose to do, spending quality time with your mum on Mother’s Day, or a day that works best for you both, is the most important thing.

A history

Get ready to experience the most electrifying and empowering event of the year.

Presented by Showbiz Christchurch, That Bloody Woman is not your ordinary musical - it’s a rock concert-style extravaganza that brings to life Kate Sheppard’s story of how New Zealand became the first country in the world to give women the right to vote.

Written by Christchurch locals Luke di Somma and Gregory Cooper, this show is not just history - it’s HER story, the tale of how one person can start a movement to change the world. “That Bloody Woman is a modern and exciting way of telling an old, but important tale, and

with its catchy rock score and cheeky humour, will be a memorable and raucous night out,” says Showbiz General Manager Craig Ogilvie.

Showbiz Christchurch has worked closely with the Kate Sheppard House to ensure this inspirational and electric show is a celebration of feminism and su rage, and a reminder that one person’s passion and determination can alter the course of history.

glamping GO

Glamping has become a standard addition to many travel bucket lists.

Putting a luxurious spin on a camping getaway, its popularity speaks for itself. Add a glass of whisky or gin rested comfortably in your hand and you’ve got the perfect off-grid, justwhat-you-needed escape to nature.

This is Lammermoor Distillery’s speciality. Distilling expertly crafted spirits at the Lammermoor Station and providing scenic glamping accommodation, John and Susie Elliot have fused two unique experiences.

Completely remote, the Glamping Hut provides a truly off-grid stay, with no cooking facilities and sweeping views of the hills and Taieri river through large window walls. With a mini library and hot tub on the deck, it’s a recipe for an offline, romantic escape.

For larger groups, the Cottage boasts three bedrooms, open-plan living and a fully-equipped kitchen. Read a book or play a board game by the fire, before enjoying a soak in the private spa, the Cottage combines quality family and personal time.

Book a distillery tour with the Elliots, and immerse yourself in the process and history of the Lammermoor Distillery. Susie says their space is “remote but fantastic”, and they are proud to maintain sustainable, natural, and on-site distilling practices.

A vibrant hub for ART

Street art is a shining example of the resilience and creativity of our Christchurch community in the aftermath of the earthquakes.

Piles of rubble have been transformed into thoughtprovoking canvases that add vibrancy to our city’s streets. Here are some to look out for:

Ōtautahi Mural (above left)

The Ōtautahi Mural, located in the SALT District is a hand-painted masterpiece created by Paul Walters, a skilled signwriter, who collaborated with renowned street artist Dcypher, for Oi YOU!

Passing Time sculpture (top image)

A prominent public artwork, next to the Ara central city campus, Passing Time was created by Anton Parsons. Unveiled in 2008, it has become a symbol of the city’s regeneration following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. Produced by SCAPE public art, as are all the sculptures in this article.

Alice in Videoland mural (above right)

On the side of the Alice Cinema building, is a Tim Burton-esque mural created by Jacob Yikes, a prolific Christchurch artist (who we featured in our 16 March ArtBeat section).

The mural depicts a larger-than-life Alice, serving as a playful invitation to the cinema’s charming DVD rental and theatre.

The Nucleus sculpture

The Nucleus sculpture is a striking red stainless-steel sphere that appears to be hovering in mid-air.

Standing tall at a towering height of nine metres, Nucleus was crafted by the talented artist Phil Price.

Located on the intersection of High, Manchester, and Lichfield streets, this kinetic masterpiece commands attention and leaves a lasting impression on all who pass by.

Riverside Market 3D mural

One of the newest murals to appear in Christchurch is the Riverside Market 3D mural. It gives a sneak peek into our city’s heritage, pre-quake and features elements that are a nod to the global women’s suffrage movement.

This piece of work was created and designed by Josh Thompson of Madeknown and was painted by collective DTR Crew members Jacob Yikes, Wongi ‘Freak’ Wilson, Nick ‘Ikarus’ Tam and Guy ‘Dcypher’ Ellis.

Diminish and Ascend sculpture

Diminish And Ascend is a welded aluminium stairway sculpture created by David McCracken, and is located in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.

If you’re in the area, it is definitely worth checking out.

Cathedral Grammar

Thepursuit of excellence, strong character, broad opportunities, multiple pathways for success, and focusing on our students’ well-being is at the heart of all we do.

Cathedral Grammar is an independent Anglican school providing high-quality education for pre-school, primary school, and intermediate aged girls and boys on the banks of the Avon River overlooking Hagley Park. Our school is a place of ambition alongside preparation where students learn from the best.

Every year level benefits from the expertise of high-calibre specialist teachers across multiple subjects, a structured timetable, and small class sizes meaning learning is amplified and every child’s strengths are identified and built upon, with

support provided at every step of their journey.

Our deliberate approach towards learning and development of independence sees each student transitioning through a layered and structured approach from Pre-School to Year 8. This sees our senior students immersed in a secondary school style timetable accessing multiple teachers across a range of specialist areas including music, art, physical education, science, mathematics, and English. Co-curricular programmes and opportunities, service activities and celebrations of achievements are fundamental to the holistic approach we take to ensure our students develop a well-rounded approach to who they are as a person, as a learner and as a contributor to society. We support, nurture,

develop, and guide, but as a school we celebrate success, keep the score, award placings, present cups, and maintain our historical records of sporting and cultural achievement.

Our Term 1 and 4 sport programme extends upon the traditional sports our students participate in for clubs on the weekends. Selwyn House School

AtSelwyn House School, we inspire our students to be global thinkers who understand that they can have a positive impact on the world they live in. The school’s purpose is to enable each student to develop the empathy and understanding, as well as the powerful critical and creative thinking skills, that will allow them to make a difference - as well as the belief that they can.

A future-focused curriculum, which is based on the world-leading International Baccalaureate (IB), embraces subjects such as Mechatronics, Robotics, Science and the Arts, while also ensuring that the core subjects are at the forefront of learning is

the foundation of Selwyn House School. To help achieve this, we have a range of specialist teachers to ensure that our students are receiving a high-quality, broad education at this primary school level, and the curriculum is delivered in a way that is engaging, relevant and puts students at the centre of their own learning.

Our strong wellbeing programme ensures our students are able to negotiate the formative years of primary and intermediate schooling within a safe and nurturing environment, where they are able to be themselves, safely challenge themselves, and develop a strong sense of self-worth.

Selwyn House School is filled with supportive, passionate and highly-qualified staff who are determined to make a difference to all students. We provide an inclusive learning environment that encourages every student to be themself and be proud of it.

With our small class sizes, our teaching staff are able to implement individualised learning programmes and support each student in their personal endeavours. As a result, we can ensure that each girl who enters Selwyn House School develops into a confident individual who understands how they learn best, appreciates their individual strengths and believes in their unique abilities.

We take our responsibility as educators very seriously at Selwyn House and take pride in the fact that we are developing the kind of problem-solvers, leaders, and critical thinkers that our world needs.

St Andrew’s College

Wehave begun 2023 with a strong sense of optimism at St Andrew’s College, especially with Covid-19 having far less impact in the classroom, and our traditional events, plus sporting and cultural activities able to take place once again.

Our campus is abuzz as students engage with their learning and take part in a full range of co-curricular programmes. Many have been preparing for their regional and national sporting competitions, and the upcoming Senior production, Bright Star.

This return to full school spirit is reflected in our prefect’s theme for the year, ‘Blue and White, Do it Right’, led by

Head Prefects, Lily Champion-Smith and Torin Ward.

First and foremost, St Andrew’s College is a place of learning, and we are proud of the excellent results our students achieved in the 2022 NCEA examinations, with a total of 274 NCEA Excellence endorsements gained across the three year levels, and 100 per cent of our students gaining NCEA at Level 2. Our students also achieved recordbreaking success in the NZQA Scholarships examinations, gaining an impressive 77 scholarships, with 12 of these at the “outstanding level”. Even more impressive is that Corin Simcock (Year 13 in 2022) was named as one of the Top 11 Premier

Scholars in New Zealand, and Tom Edwards (Year 13 in 2022) was a top subject scholar with the highest mark in New Zealand for Digital Technology.

Our key goals for 2023 are wellbeing, sustainability, Mātauranga Māori, innovation, and student leadership. These sit alongside our learning and academic goals for each student, which are targeted towards achieving their own personal excellence.

In striking a unique blend between the traditional and the innovative, our approach adapts quickly to the demands of the present while holding true to the values of those who founded St Andrew’s College 106 years ago. This gives our young people a combination of freedom and boundaries which, we believe, results in graduates with roots and wings to flourish in an ever-changing world.

BE IN THE KNOW FOR ‘THE ROAR’ AND GAME BIRD SEASON

If you’re a firearms licence holder, you’ll need to know about changes to the storage and transport rules for firearms and ammunition, and changes to the seven rules of firearms safety.

Regulations were updated in February 2022, and to help Kiwis make sense of those changes, Te Tari Pūreke, the new firearms regulator, published a Secure Storage and Transport Guide.

You can download a copy of the Secure Storage and Transport Guide from www.firearmssafetyauthority.govt.nz/firearms-safety

Storage and transport for firearms and ammunition, key points

Transportation

If you’re driving to a hunting location, your firearm needs to be inoperable during your travel and, ideally, concealed from view. This means removing the bolt or an essential part (or if that’s not possible, applying a trigger or cable lock), or transporting the firearm in a locked carry case.

The ammunition needs to be separately and securely stored in a locked glove box or similar storage area, if practical. And please, whatever you do, once you’ve finished using your firearm, lock it away. Never leave any firearms in your ute, shed, home or vehicle unsecured at any time.

The only exceptions to the firearms and ammunition transport rules are if you’re using the firearm on a farm for farm-related activities, or you’re doing legallyauthorised hunting or pest control (such as a regional council employed pest controller) and the licence holder is in the vehicle or the immediately vicinity of the vehicle with the firearms in it.

Make sure you read or download a free copy of the storage and transport guide to keep up to date with the details of the changes: www.firearmssafetyauthority.govt.nz/ firearms-safety/storage-transportation.

Taking a break when you’re travelling with firearms

For those who travel with firearms to hunt locations, your inoperable and secured firearm can be left in your vehicle unattended, for example during a break in a journey, for up to 60 minutes. But you need to lock your vehicle and stay within the immediate area or vicinity of the vehicle and meet other conditions.

Read the storage and transport guide for full details: www. firearmssafetyauthority.govt. nz/firearms-safety/storagetransportation

The 7 rules of firearm safety

Rule 1 Treat every firearm as loaded

Rule 2 Always point firearms in a safe direction

Rule 3 Chamber a cartridge only when ready to fire

Rule 4 Identify your target beyond all doubt

Rule 5 Check your firing zone

Rule 6 Store and transport firearms and ammunition safely

Rule 7 Avoid alcohol or drugs when handling firearms

Ammunition

All ammunition must now be stored in a locked container. You can now only store ammunition with firearms in a gun safe that has a separate lockable compartment that has a different key than the key for the gun safe. You must keep these keys separate.

And remember to keep those keys in different places, not on the same key ring or hook. If your safe doesn’t have a separate lockable compartment, you need to store ammunition in its own secure storage container with a key, combination, or padlock, or in a stout locked cupboard.

Register your firearms

Te Tari Pūreke – Firearms Safety Authority is responsible for managing firearms in New Zealand. Its aim is to enable the legitimate use of firearms for feeding whānau, conservation, farming and recreation, while keeping communities safe. This involves making sure firearms licence holders are fit and proper to possess firearms and are meeting the obligations of their licence. New Zealand will have a firearms registry from 24 June 2023. There will be no charge for registering firearms.

The seven rules of firearm safety

Under no circumstances can firearms, ammunition or other arms items be left in a vehicle overnight.

The area has an abundance of walking tracks from short leisurely strolls along forest paths to day-hikes, suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Dress warmly, enjoy the crisp mountain air, then follow it with a soak in the local hot pools, and a relaxing massage. Here are some ideas:

THE FOREST AMBLE

A picturesque short walk, with a range of large wooden art sculptures along the way. Check out a friendly giant, an orangutan, a tuatara, and a dog (to name a few). Allow half a day.

WOODLAND WALK AND MAJUBA TRACK

Starts from the Hanmer Forest entrance, linking the Woodland Walk and Majuba Track to reach the top of Conical Hill for outstanding views over the Hanmer basin. Return the same way, or follow the zig-zag track down to the village. Allow half a day.

WATERFALL TRACK

Climb through mountain beech / tawhai forest to the spectacular 41m Dog Stream waterfall. The winding and moderately steep trail begins at the top of McIntyres Road (accessed off Jollies Pass Road) and heads up the stream edge through dense native forest. Experienced walkers can return via the Spur Track and Fir Trail. Allow half a day.

Does a motel land and buildings owner have any involvement in operation with the tenant’s business?

When a tenant buys a motel business, they are buying a lease, with many years to run. There should be more than 20 leaseyears to run, as banks will not normally lend to buyers where less than 20 years remain.

Read the lease carefully, especially in relation to maintenance requirements.

Usually the tenant of a motel is responsible for all maintenance of the motel, except for structural items.

While the land and buildings owner (landlord) doesn’t normally have any direct involvement in the operation of the business, they do set the rules for the business, which are

normally in the lease document. These include things such as whether pets are allowed on the premises, or whether the tenant can take longer-term housing emergency clients. Discuss any items of concern with your lawyer at purchase time.

The lease may also require the tenant’s annual accounts to be supplied to the landlord, which can be used for assessing the level of rent at each rent review.

Your lawyer can advise you on any of the above, or you can speak to a Business Broker who has experience in accommodation businesses.

The MYOB Belief Barometer

– a survey of 1000 New Zealanders (adults 18+) from across the country –investigated entrepreneurial spirit and the role of self-belief in starting up a business. It found that eight out of 10 Kiwi adults have had an idea for a business, and more than three quarters believe they’re capable of starting a business, but most ideas don’t make it past a chat around the barbecue.

What is primarily holding potential entrepreneurs back is not having the financial backing or support to pursue the idea, followed by time commitments, and a fear of failure.

Similarly, greater financial security (67 percent) and the confidence to back themselves (47 percent) were the top two choices when respondents were asked what would have made the most difference to

them pursuing their idea to start their own business.

MYOB spokesperson, Jo Tozer, says that it’s no surprise that finances were the biggest hurdle. She adds that acting on the strength of their belief in their idea and exploring avenues to overcome barriers, could unleash the opportunities that many people are hoping for.

“Innovation is part of our DNA in New Zealand, and we see this every day in the range of SMEs that provide the backbone to our economy - but it’s brilliant to see that more widely, such a significant proportion of New Zealanders have considered starting a business.

“What’s key is having that confidence to back themselves. When armed with self-belief and the right tools and support, we could easily see more of these ideas make it past a chat around the barbecue,” says Jo.

Success stories

More than a third (37 percent) of business founders who took the plunge to start a business said they were extremely or very confident that their first business would succeed, followed by 40 percent who were moderately confident.

Highlighting the importance and value of mindset and selfconfidence, self-belief was also ranked consistently by those respondents who have started a business, as one of the top three factors influencing how well their first business did.

Also credited as being influential to their business success were loyal customers, and their work ethic/commitment.

PEOPLE MIX

Kiwi businesses should beware of hiring “just anybody who comes along” because a business that hopes to survive and thrive will need the right mix of people to get through.

New Zealand-based Entrepreneurial Operating System Implementer and facilitator Vijay Nyayapati says there is no question New Zealanders are in tough times — labour shortages, floods, and the cost-of-living crisis — which may lead to knee-jerk business decisions.

Vijay cautions Kiwi business owners not to view job applicants as ‘stop gaps’.

“Arguably, a tight labour market is when companies should think more deeply about employing the kinds of people who can help to ensure that their business will weather the economic doldrums.

“Just grabbing the first couple of candidates that apply is usually a ticket to expensive internal and external problems down the road,” Vijay believes.

“The wrong people in crucial roles could have a ripple effect that demoralises a broader team, and frustrates customers and suppliers.

“The ‘wrong’ person for a role does not mean they are ‘bad’ people. They may just not have the management temperament, or leadership skills.

“Even if it threatens to take longer to find the right person, the potential delay in filling the role and the costs of a comprehensive search will pay off,” he adds.

Lawyers or advocates

Employment advocates in New Zealand offer advice and representation, and some of them do a great job.

Allan Halse is an employment advocate who ran a (now liquidated) company called Culture Safe. He has featured regularly in the media, fighting various battles.

What he is most well-known for are his attacks on anyone who disagrees with him, including opposing employers and their lawyers, the Employment Relations Authority and the Employment Court.

Some years ago, he signed up to a record of settlement that included the usual terms of full, final, and confidential. Apparently those terms didn’t apply to Allan, who then went on social media criticising the employer. Unsurprisingly the employer took enforcement action, which started a long-running legal battle in the Employment Relations Authority, the Employment Court, the Court of Appeal, and finally the Supreme Court.

Unfortunately, due to what Allan would likely call a biased and corrupt judicial system, the Courts upheld the various penalties against him. But Allan’s Facebook followers raised $67,000 to stop him being bankrupted. Had he behaved like this as a lawyer, he would have been ‘struck off ’ by the Law Society.

As an advocate, he formed a new company, and is no doubt is carrying on fighting for those perceived as the underdog. This is the key difference between lawyers and advocates – advocates can largely do what they like, at least until a Court intervenes. However Lawyers are highly regulated – choose carefully.

What is SEO?

The harsh reality is that if your website doesn’t have at least some presence on Google, your business will struggle to get off the ground. With new businesses comes new websites, meaning it’s a constant dogfight to stay at the top. Ensuring you’re found over your competition means that potential customers need to see you first. To increase your visibility in Google.

1. Technical setup

This step may seem overwhelming, but a few small tweaks can help you on your way. Visit your website and ensure that all links work, your subpages are all correctly named, there are no broken links and no duplicate content.

2. Keywords

Keywords are phrases or search terms that potential customers would use when finding a business website like yours. Identify terms and topics that are relevant to your business and ensure your website contains these keywords and phrases, specifically in page titles and headers.

3. Content

Content is key when it comes to your website. Google loves content that’s high-quality, relevant and up-to-date. Ensure your website is structured so that all your potential customers can read about exactly what you do, why you’re better than the competition, and where to get in contact.

If you’re still scratching your head over SEO, feel free to flick me an email at michael@metros.co.nz and we can chat further.

A mixed market

The mortgage market is a mixed bag with widely varying rates.

The market is stabilising, but we’re seeing widely varying rates on offer – even within the same bank, with one rate for customers dealing direct, and then a lower rate for those working with mortgage advisers.

Why is this happening? Banks follow rules about how much they can lend on ‘low deposit’ deals (under 20 percent deposit). If the numbers aren’t adding up, they’ll want more business from customers, with at least a 20 percent deposit.

As the banks get their numbers into line, we will see less variation, and hopefully less volatility, across the board as inflation comes under control, and the OCR starts to stabilise.

In terms of interest rates, we’re near the peak and by the end of the year we might see rates easing. Fixing for one year or 18 months is probably best, but circumstances differ for everyone, so talk to a mortgage adviser first.

If you need to renew, restructure or refinance, contact NZ Mortgages on 0800 100 300 or email hello@nzmortgages.co.nz. And if you require new lending for a first home, next home, or investment property, we can help with that too.

Leather Lead TAKES THE

Leather has always been a popular choice for autumn fashion, and this year it takes centre stage in a big way.

From leather jackets and pants to skirts and dresses, designers are incorporating this durable and versatile material into their collections in innovative and exciting ways for both men’s and women’s fashion.

Coloured leather is one of the biggest fashion trends this autumn. Black and brown leather will always be classics, however this season’s offerings include bold shades such as red, blue, orange, and pink hues from pastels to neons.

Leather pieces with intricate details, such as studs or embroidery, are also making a comeback.

Whether you prefer a classic leather jacket, or want to try something a little more daring, there are plenty of ways to incorporate this trend into your autumn wardrobe. Embrace the cooler weather and leather up in style.

ECCO shoes have been blending leading footwear technology with style since 1963.

The knowledge developed over this lifetime has produced their latest ECCO Heritage Range of rugged shoe styles for the city and outdoors. lifestyle. Without straying from their signature style, each boot represents sophistication with the eternal utilitarian boot trend.

These character-rich boots are made with purpose for real world functionality, with each style offering unique features to bring you reliable comfort. The lace-up is equipped with ECCO waterproof protection, thermal lining and a brushed felt inlay sole, while the Chelsea boot is crafted with a leather collar and removable textile inlay sole.

Foot problems can arise at any age. Crucial to a good outcome is expert diagnostic advice from a trusted podiatrist at the onset of symptoms.

Feet First Podiatry opened its new state-of-the-art clinic in November, and with sister company, The Shoe Room, situated next door, clients can now benefit from this seamless cohesion between the two.

The new clinic also brings new services – such as Shockwave Therapy, a non-invasive technique utilising sound waves to accelerate the healing process in damaged tissue.

“Shockwave Therapy is very effective on chronic foot disorders, such as plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy,” owner and senior podiatrist Charlotte Russell says.

Ingrown toenails management and treatment is another service provided here.

“Legislative changes are currently being reviewed nationally with regards to ingrown toenail surgery. We are following these closely and can offer pain-free, nonsurgical solutions as an alternative,” Charlotte says.

Feet First Podiatry offers footcare for the whole family, from concerns around nails, corns, and callouses, to diabetes, arthritis, chronic heel pain and children’s developmental foot problems.

Appointments at Feet First Podiatry can now be booked online or by phoning the friendly team on 03 348 7910. www.feetfirst.co.nz

When

Whether you prefer bold and dramatic lines or subtle and natural strokes, there’s no denying that eye liners are a game-changer.

A sleek winged liner can make you feel slick, while a subtle hint of smudged liner can give you that effortless edgy vibe. Let’s not forget about the versatility of coloured liners - from electric blue to metallic gold, the options are endless.

Not only do eye liners add a touch of glam to your makeup look, but they also come in a variety of formulas and textures to suit your preferences.

Whether you prefer the precision of a liquid liner, the smoothness of a gel liner, or the convenience of a pencil liner, there’s something out there for everyone.

And let’s not forget the fun of experimenting with different liner techniques - from the classic cat-eye to the trendy double wing, there’s always room to play and explore with your makeup looks.

Who knows, you might just discover a signature look that makes you feel like a million bucks.

Naturally curly hair or wavy or permed hair. To be able to wear your hair curly, you need to add moisture into the hair shaft. This will control the frizz and enhance your natural curl.

Ginger

A superfood that has many health benefits, ginger is known to alleviate congestion, reduce heartburn, promote weight loss, to provide relief for an upset stomach and other digestive issues, and support a healthy gut. Gingerol, a natural compound found in fresh ginger, is packed with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can help restore gut balance.

Add it to your diet by putting chopped ginger in your tea or hot water in the mornings, blending it in a smoothie, or taking a ginger capsule supplement daily.

Bananas

Bananas contain a fibre called inulin, a substance that stimulates the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. Inulin is a prebiotic that can help develop a microbiome and provide fuel for healthy bacteria to live in your gut. Bananas are also a source of fructooligosaccharides, which act as a probiotic and promote the growth of healthy bacteria in the digestive tract.

Add to your diet by eating bananas with cereal, in a smoothie, sliced or whole on their own.

Yoghurt

Yoghurt is probably the first food you think of when it comes to gut health. Rich in probiotics (live microorganisms that keep the gut microbiome healthy), yoghurt can help with gut issues such as bloating. A proper balance of bacteria in your gut improves digestion, can block infection-causing organisms, and boost your immune system. High-protein probiotic yoghurt with minimal sugar is best.

Add it to your diet by eating with cereal, on its own, in smoothies, curries, and other dishes.

Lentils

Lentils are a versatile food rich in nutrients such as iron, B vitamins, magnesium, potassium, and zinc, as well as resistant starches, which are brilliant for gut health. Resistant starches are carbohydrates that pass through most of the digestive system unchanged, usually fermenting in the colon, and decreasing the colon’s pH level to help create an environment where beneficial bacteria thrive.

Add lentils to your diet in soup, pasta, and salads. Bake them in the oven in stews, and casseroles, or serve them as a side dish.

SOUP IT UP

Soups often change seasonally depending on the availability of fresh produce, however certain base ingredients or stocks stay the same. There are seven (at least) types of soups. Usually these are broths, consommes, creamy soups, veloute-based soups, purees, bisques, chowders, and clear soups. Here are some tips on one of them.

Broths

Like stocks, broths are prepared by simmering flavouring ingredients in a liquid over a long period of time. The differences between a broth and stock are that a broth uses meat instead of just bones. The second difference is a finished broth can be served as finished dishes while stocks are used as a base for further cooking. Broths are meant to be flavourful and seasoned.

In a broth-based vegetable soup, such as a minestrone, the vegetables and meats are cooked directly in the broth. Many vegetables have different cooking times, so it is essential to add them at the right time to ensure all ingredients finish cooking at the exact same time.

To create a broth-based vegetable soup follow these steps:

Sweat long cooking vegetables in butter or fat.

Add the stock or broth and bring to a simmer.

Add seasonings such as bay leaves, dried thyme, crushed peppercorns, parsley stems, and garlic in a sachet, allowing enough time for the seasonings to fully flavour the soup.

Add additional ingredients according to their cooking time. Simmer the soup to blend all the flavours.

sweet sweets FOR THE

Mother’s Day is a special day where mothers all around the world are recognised and celebrated.

The celebration takes many forms, but for the most part it’s a day where mothers get the chance to put their feet up and be well and truly spoilt. In its modern form the holiday originated in the United States, where it is observed on the second Sunday in May. Many other countries also celebrate the holiday on this date – and indeed Mother’s Day in New Zealand this year is on 14 May.

So, we know the date, but what about how we might choose to celebrate the mothers who are dear to us? A particularly

special place to do that would be at Sweet Soul Patisserie on Cashel Street with its delectable Parisian-style desserts, some created especially for Mother’s Day by talented chef Rea Scur.

These desserts are as beautiful to look at as they are to savour, and they have equally delightful names. The Mother’s Love is an irresistible combination of chocolate mousse with an infusion of hibiscus tea and dried roses on a hazelnut cake.

La Vie en Rose features figs, rosewater and pecans – and there will be others to be revealed soon as well. All the flavours

can you resist the temptation?

are great matches for the Laurent-Ferrier champagne they offer in the elegant mezzanine champagne lounge at Sweet Soul which will be open from 8am – 8pm on Mother’s Day.

If rather than dining-in at Sweet Soul you would like to take some of these creations away for a family gathering, or for a present to leave at your mother’s house, a tantalising takeaway box with 12 petit fours is available. See the full range of Mother’s Day desserts on the website.

Amere 35-minute drive from Christchurch, in the picturesque village of Cust, is a business that holds a wealth of early settler history behind it - with over one hundred years of shopkeepers plying their trade from this address.

Route 72 Café Bar Emporium may be on the market, but owners Annette and Steve Thomson say until the “sold” sign goes up, this boutique gift store and cafe remains a fabulous excursion.

After 30 years owning and operating the business, Annette says they are looking forward to retirement.

“There are no guarantees things will stay exactly the same, so while

they still can, people should come out and enjoy everything that has made the name above the door renowned throughout Canterbury and beyond.”

From its award winning cafe to its Emporium quality homeware, lighting, jewellery, possum and merino garments, pure cotton clothing, and Aotearoa giftware, no wonder Route 72 Café has achieved such an enviable iconic status.

For those tired of struggling with hardto-reach windows, or those like me who are simply too lazy to clean them, the Ecovacs Winbot W1 Pro is nothing less than a game-changer. The robot window cleaner attaches securely to glass surfaces of varying thicknesses with advanced suction technology, making it perfect for high up or awkwardly positioned windows, inside and out.

As a seasoned techy, it takes a lot for a gadget to leave me speechless these days, but watching the Winbot’s ability to defy gravity and cling on is truly amazing.

Setting up and using it is incredibly simple, making it accessible for those who aren’t tech-savvy. Just pair it to the app, fill it with cleaning solution, attach it to the window, and press a button to start the cleaning process.

It can’t clean small windows, as it requires a minimum surface area bigger than the unit itself to attach to.

It obviously can’t do leadlighting, textured glass or car windscreens (due to the angle not being vertical). But it can sense the edges of frameless glass, making it perfect for showers and tempered glass barriers.

The W1 Pro effectively cleans

large areas of glass, although it may leave a few millimetre uncleaned border around the edge of the window frame.

Depending on how dirty your window is, it’s barely noticeable.

The washable cleaning pads are a plus, allowing for numerous uses before needing to be replaced. The supplied bottle of cleaning solution lasts approximately one whole house, so depending on your intended schedule, that could prove to be a costly consumable.

I did have limited success with ordinary glass cleaner, although it may void your warranty.

The robot cleaner has

an emergency battery to prevent falling if the power is disconnected, plus a tether for extra security, especially for multi-storey dwellings and floor to ceiling windows.

This gadget is perfect for those looking to take the elbow grease out of their window cleaning routine.

It’s also one of those innovative gadgets that will gather a crowd of neighbours to watch it go about its work.

The pure convenience of the Winbot W1 Pro makes it a worthwhile investment, and it also comes in a stylish carry case to boot.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

heavenly comfort

We naturally sleep more during winter, meaning bed becomes that much more important; and noticeable when it’s not quite right. Fewer daylight hours and cold evenings mean it’s perfectly acceptable to tuck up in bed early, but you want to be heading to a warm, luxurious, comfortable one.

Christchurch-based company, Dreamwool Beds, can help you here. They have one easy motto: simplicity reveals and complexity conceals, and they’re happy to show you what’s inside their mattresses.

They focus on the simple with their 100 percent natural latex mattresses, which are filled with generous layers of soft, temperature-regulating merino wool and European micro-coils. This is why their mattresses are comfortable, breathable, and offer conformity.

“When you look at what’s in our products it’s understandable, and we keep it easy with our definition of the products,” says

owner David Henderson. “These days, people are coming up with synthetic products for everything to mimic what natural products do naturally. Our latex range is really good if you have sore hips or shoulders, and our beds are temperature neutral because they’re filled with natural products.”

Each luxury mattress is made to order, and fewer than 500 merino wool mattresses are produced each year. Their mattresses are anti-static, dust repellent, and the natural probiotic fabric treatment uses no harmful chemicals.

You can add to your luxury sleep experience with the bedding options they offer, too. Discover a range of mattress protectors suitable for all climates, as well as organic cotton sheets.

The most recent edition to their range, the Evolve mattress, has been described as an absolute joy to lie on. “It’s a really lovely, soft, conforming mattress that is excellent for keeping your temperature neutral,”

says David. A mattress height of 24cm, means the bed is easy to make, along with more than 7.5kg of merino wool in a queen-size mattress for extra plushness. All the mattresses include a 10-year pro-rata warranty, so you can sleep easy.

Dreamwool make it super simple to buy a mattress, with efficient processes and a knowledgeable team. They have thought of everything when it comes to a comfortable night’s sleep, and if you head into the showroom, you’ll be able to see exactly what they make and understand their products.

You spend about a third of your life sleeping, so a comfy mattress should be high on your priority list. Get in touch with the Dreamwool Beds showroom at 96 Disraeli Street, Sydenham, or check out their website to discover how they can improve your comfort and rest. www.dreamwool.com

To wander around a gallery full of stunning contemporary art is a favourite pastime for many.

If you are someone who loves modern original art works you will find a wealth of quality work to admire during the Open Weekend – 6-7 May at Windsor Gallery on St Asaph Street.

At least 200 works by 30 artists from all over New Zealand will be on display, as well as some from Dubai and Australia.

Owners Philip and Tracey Wynands have had a great deal of fun choosing the artists for the exhibition featuring sculptures, photographs, landscapes works, floral, and still life pieces along with some works that are so original as to defy definition.

As well as filling every wall space, art works can also be seen in the workshop behind the gallery. Truly a wonderful spectacle for art connoisseurs – and of course all the pieces are for sale.

fu y friend laying a to rest

Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is a difficult decision that all pet owners eventually have to face.

It can be an emotional and overwhelming time, but it’s important to remember that you are not alone. Many pet owners struggle with knowing when it’s the right time to say goodbye to their furry friends and other pets.

If your pet is in constant pain or suffering, it may be time to consider euthanasia. Chronic pain can be difficult to manage, and it may severely impact your pet’s quality of life. Your veterinarian can help you determine if a pet’s pain is manageable, or if it’s time to consider having it put to sleep.

According to dog lover Tina Harding, an experienced vet nurse, and active organiser/

See the pet door experts

participant of many canine groups, making such decisions may cause feelings of guilt and worry about doing it too soon, or possibly too late.

She says you can ease the burden by considering your pet’s quality of life. If your pet is no longer able to do the things they once enjoyed, or if they are no longer interested in food, toys, or interacting with people, it may be a sign that their quality of life has diminished.

Tina says to ask yourself questions such as: can they stand and move around, are they eating, or do they cry in pain? It’s also essential to consider the treatment options

available for your pet’s condition. If these are invasive or risky, and there is no guarantee of success, it may be best to consider a more final option, she says.

“Your veterinarian can provide guidance on the available treatment options and the likelihood of success.”

Tina says it is okay to feel overwhelmed with emotions during this difficult time, but the pet’s need should come first.

“Ultimately, you know your pet best, and it’s important to do what’s best for them, even if it is a hard decision. Celebrate the time you spent together, and remember the love and joy they brought into your life.”

Great service (for installing a microchip cat door), the man answering the phone was friendly and helpful, and the serviceman also a top bloke. Very impressed with both the quality of the work and the people.

“We have just had a dog door installed. We were able to get everything organised smoothly and quickly, and our dog door was installed without a hitch, and time was taken to clean the glass and all packaging etc was taken away, leaving our place clean and tidy. Am more than happy to recommend Sharp Glass!”

Ear infections are almost always simply a ‘symptom’ of an underlying condition. Founder of MicroMed and pet Naturopathic Nutritionist Maria Brown says the best thing to do to address a dog’s allergies is change their diet. She says the best diet is a raw food balanced diet because it’s low inflammatory and made of fresh foods.

She advises dog owners to consider the PMR diet or the BARF diet. Both emphasise the consumption of uncooked, unprocessed animal muscle meat, bones, offal, and for BARF, fruits, and vegetables. They also promote nutrient-

dense additions such as probiotics, chlorella powder, and cold-pressed ground flaxseed.

It’s important that dogs have the right microbial balance to support their overall health, Maria says. MicroMed products such as the sprayon and oral probiotic are made up of 100 percent organically based formulations of commensal microbes that can be used to treat minor fungal conditions, while you find the root cause.

“Nature provides a cornucopia of plants that heal, we simply need to discover with a little help, what can work best for your pet,” says Maria.

Bulbs such as da odils, tulips, and crocuses are popular choices, and their hardiness makes them perfect for withstanding the cold winter months.

When choosing bulbs, look for those that are firm and healthy, as these are more likely to produce strong, healthy plants. If you’re unsure how many to plant, more is always better. Mass plantings look spectacular.

Also by choosing a variety of bulbs your garden with explode with colour in September or maybe even sooner.

Once you have your bulbs, it’s time to prepare your soil. Bulbs prefer well-draining soil, so make sure that the area (or pots) you have chosen have good drainage. You can also add compost or other organic matter to the soil to help improve its quality.

Follow the specific planting instructions for each type of bulb. In general, bulbs should be planted at a depth that is two to three times their size, with the pointed end facing upwards. This will ensure they develop properly and produce a strong, healthy plants.

After planting, it’s important to water your bulbs thoroughly and ensure that the area is well-drained. Bulbs are susceptible to rot if they are left in damp soil for too long, so do your best to keep the area dry after planting.

With a little bit of planning and care, planting bulbs in autumn can be a fun and rewarding experience. As you watch your bulbs grow and bloom come springtime, you’ll be glad you took the time to plant them now. Grab your gardening gloves, get your hands dirty, and have fun gardening this autumn.

Bulbs to consider:

Da odils – Seen all over Hagley Park in spring, daffodils are among the most easy-growing bulbs.

Tulips- Come in almost every colour from pale pinks to crimson reds and have a variety of flower shapes.

Hyacinth- Highly fragrant flowers that thrive when grown indoors.

Freesias – Well known for their long vase life and sweet fragrance.

Irises - Most irises will bloom in spring or summer. Dwarf varieties tend to bloom earlier in spring, with intermediate sizes blooming later.

Planting bulbs in autumn is a wonderful way to ensure that your garden is full of vibrant colours come springtime.

For the past 14 years, Ollie and Juliet Newman, and the Onlandscapes team, have been creating magical garden spaces for Canterbury residents, employing their talents for fencing and paving, stone and timber works, irrigation, and planting. They enjoy nothing more than meeting like-minded garden enthusiasts and getting them excited about their latest outdoor project. “Seeing the smiles on people’s faces when a job is completed and looks stunning is worth everything to us. Over 80 percent of our work is referrals from happy clients, so we must be doing something right.”

The awards they’ve won reinforce those words.

The company has won the People’s Choice Award consecutively during the last two Registered Master Landscapers annual awards.

“Our entry this year is for a Clyde Road garden, which was an exciting design by Inside Out Design.

“The project (pictured) turned an overgrown weed-infested building site into a spectacular space with tiered landscaping, curved stonewalls, paving, timber work and beautiful plants. Each level of the garden tells its own story and we were proud to showcase our skills through the garden’s construction.”

New Brighton REIMAGINING

How much of a renaissance it is now depends on the local community, and support of the Christchurch City Council’s annual plan, plus getting behind Greater New Brighton. The latter is a community-led development programme, founded to enhance the social and economic

environment in and around the seaside township. Assisting in the redevelopment is the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust (CEAT), which is providing up to $2 million for Greater New Brighton projects, which have been determined by the community.

Running parallel with the community-led

projects is the New Brighton Centre Master Plan to re-establish the centre as the heart of the community and be the key activity centre for the eastern suburbs. The thinking is that a revitalised, vibrant centre will attract people to ‘live, work and play’ in New Brighton.

The ‘Reimagined New Brighton Mall’ aims to include several community engagement areas, such as a performance space and central green, along with a youth space, and a social enterprise-community area.

The project is proposed for the beach end of the mall, where the popular Saturday market and food stalls are usually held. Several

Future plans

community meetings have already been held by The Greater New Brighton group to gauge feedback from local residents on the final design.

The group, comprising seven volunteers led by local Robbie Baigent, has spent the past 18 months developing the project. When work starts will depend on community and council approvals, although the group is hopeful it will be this year.

Council’s annual plan also allows for some substantial future development in New Brighton. This includes new open (public) spaces, public toilets, a ‘bus super stop’, and improved parking in New Brighton. Also in the plan is the relocation of the Countdown supermarket, the owner of which is still considering options for its future. Funding for the projects has yet to be allocated.

Talented innovators

Thanks to Christchurch’s thriving innovation ecosystem, our city has many young innovators working to build a better future for people and the planet.

Emily Blythe, the founder and CEO of Pyper Vision, is one of these remarkable talents, and at just 26 years old, she has been named Spark New Zealand Innovator of the Year. What a great recognition of the talent and innovation we have here in Ōtautahi.

Her innovation is working to solve a global economic and environmental problem – fog delays at airports.

Fog disruptions cost $18.5 billion a year globally and create more carbon emissions from diverted flights. Pyper Vision’s specially designed, environmentally-friendly drone creates safe visibility

at airports by dispersing fog. And it could be a gamechanger.

Pyper Vision is one example of the city’s aerospace community that is going from strength to strength. Christchurch is already an aerospace hub, due in part to the tech ecosystem and advanced manufacturing sector, but also because of our geography. We have a generous expanse of skies, clear airways, remote seas to the south and easy access to international sea and airports. And the Kaitorete Spit is technically the best site in Aotearoa for aerospace activity.

So don’t be surprised if by 2030 our city is referred to as Aotearoa’s aerospace capital. Our advantages are significant, and Emily leads a pathway of talented innovators taking their tech to the world.

Exciting times ahead

With business events beginning to ramp back up in earnest, our team is looking forward to another busy conference season ahead.

Already several months are close to capacity, with an array of event types booked in.

Last year, we were fortunate to have a significant number of local and national organisations and associations host their events with us. It was fantastic to see New Zealanders getting back to business and connecting face-to-face.

This year is already shaping up differently, with the return last month of Emirates’ A380 to the skies above Christchurch, and United Airline’s newly announced direct Christchurch San Francisco flights bringing with them more international travellers, including event delegates.

The increased long-haul capacity, alongside Singapore Airlines’ direct

flights, is a great sign of business returning to normal, and bodes well for the business events industry and tourism in general.

It’s now just shy of 12 months since we held our first event, the New Zealand Infrastructure Commission, Te Waihanga Looking Ahead Symposium in May 2022.

Since then, we have held more than 200, including our first live entertainment show, world-renowned DJs Basement Jaxx, which transformed our exhibition halls into a supersized dance floor.

The ability of the Centre to flex and transform, dependant on event requirements, is amazing to see. This truly is a worldclass venue and our team cannot wait to further showcase it to the world during our numerous upcoming events.

Economic downturns

Why do Canterbury businesses think differently during an economic downturn?

Rampant inflation, combined with a barrage of legislation that has added additional costs and compliance for business, continual supply chain disruptions, and a tight labour market, have all combined to create an environment that is exceedingly challenging for business.

Despite that, Canterbury is expected to emerge as one of strongest performing regions in 2023.

Why? It comes down to resilient optimism.

Because we have been through so much, we are better prepared, more resilient, agile, and decisive, with the unique mindset that says ‘now is the time to step on the gas’.

Canterbury businesses know how to capitalise on

uncertainty. They know what smart cuts and wise reinvestments look like.

They realise there is truth in the old adage that ‘you have to spend money to make money’.

We have also seen – and continue to see – symbiotic recession-proofing relationships between businesses and their customers, as well as a real focus on removing waste and inefficiencies in everyday processes.

After all, anyone can race well when the racetrack is dry. It’s those with more experience who can create strategic distance and make greater gains by overtaking in the rain.

As motor racing legend Ayrton Senna once said, “You cannot overtake 15 cars in sunny weather… but you can when it’s raining.”

Lest we forget

Ifelt honoured to gather with members of the public, veterans, and members of our armed forces to help commemmorate New Zealand’s 1915 Gallipoli campaign.

The newly reinstated Citizens’ War Memorial was a stunning backdrop to the service.

Christchurch has poured a lot of heart and soul into restoring the memorial, alongside a team of talented stonemasons, and I was so proud to stand alongside Princess Anne back in February this year for its rededication.

The ANZAC Day service is always a moving one. Laying a wreath alongside New Zealand’s armed

forces, and ending the service with the playing of The Last Post, a minute’s silence, and the sound of the national anthem always make me stop and reflect.

As a council, we have a couple of big decisions to make coming up.

We will be adopting the Annual Plan in June, and our proposed Housing and Business Choice Plan Change (PC14) is out for consultation until 3 May.

We’ve received more than 800 submissions on the draft Annual Plan, and around 150 submissions on PC14 so far.

Thank you for taking the time to submit – these decisions impact all of us and we need your views to help give us a steer.

A CAREER ON THE highlight horizon

As I write this article, I’m aware that in a very short time I’ll be participating in a lifetime career highlight. I’m excited and just a little nervous, but that’s appropriate whenever you approach significant events.

I’m going to be presenting at a conference. Not unusual for me as I’ve done this on many occasions over my long tenure, but this time it’s different.

It’s an international conference for our company’s brand and it’s taking place in South Africa, where I’ve learnt they have a strong presence.

I will present on the main stage to a sellout audience on 17th May – and here’s my quandary:

What to share with people whose experiences may be totally different at a cultural and business level? How do you create engagement so that their curiosity is piqued and how do you maintain that interest for the duration of the talk so that everyone derives some definite benefit despite my Kiwi accent potentially making hard work of things?

In thinking about all of this, I’ve rationalized that the best place to start is with a process that I’ve used many times before – and it’s stood me in good stead whenever a high level of professionalism is required. Here’s my simple system. Resist procrastinating. It never helps to wait so long that you find yourself in a corner, desperately looking for inspiration and losing vital time for fine tuning and practicing. I’ve never been someone who digs themself into this particular hole. I prefer to start early and move incrementally. So, it’s essential I select a potential topic – and soon – amongst the numerous suggestions I’ve been given. The next step is always preparation and

home staging with a difference

research.

Sure, you’ve settled on a topic, but is what you have to say the latest information or interpretation of it? I think of this as currency.

Currency is a concept that requires what you deliver to be relevant, up-to-date and engaging.

It’s something I’ve come to respect given a number of conferences I’ve attended where often-repeated, outdated ideas were presented using data shows with no real sense of purpose other than for a box to be ticked, and I’d prefer to avoid this for obvious reasons. Then there’s the timing of everything, hitting your main points in the correct order, not relying on notes because they are distracting for you and your audience, and not going off topic.

I once went to an event where the speaker got so far off topic that no one, including the presenter, knew what was happening. Lastly, what to wear, given a gal has got to look good, how to open (I’m thinking Te Reo), what resources to provide and how to finish well?

There you have it and soon I’m hoping I’ll have done it!!

Wish me luck.

Hundreds of tradies are sharpening their tools for the Plumbing World Young Plumber of the Year (YPOTY) competition.

With the chronic skills shortage facing the industry, estimated to be around 3500, Plumbing World’s CEO Rob Kidd says the competition is a way to showcase plumbing as a career, and attract new people to the trade.

“There are more than 8000 people working as plumbers, gasfitters and drainlayers in New Zealand, but it’s not enough to meet demand. The current workforce does not have the capacity to keep up with normal workload, let alone the extensive repair work resulting from the recent natural disasters,” he says.

Back for a fifth year, competitors from Northland to Southland will vie for the prestigious Young Plumber of the

Year title through a series of regional events culminating in the national final in November.

“The opportunity for Kiwis to build a fantastic career in the trades has never been better,” says Rob. “With the aging of the plumbing workforce it’s crucial our young plumbers get the support they need and for those willing to work and complete their qualifications, the path to business ownership is a very real possibility. We need to fill the pipeline with a high calibre of tradespeople who can contribute to the country’s economy, and address our industry’s skills shortage.”

Luxury doesn’t necessarily mean spending a fortune on expensive status symbols.

In fact, luxury can be achieved with a little creativity and attention to detail. Designer brands can charge more by creating value through scarcity and uniqueness, and the same can be achieved by creating one-of-a-kind decor in your own home.

Choose high-quality materials like Resene paints and wood stains to give your projects a premium look and feel.

To create a bespoke bedroom, start with a soft yet rich colour palette of chocolate, caramel, and latte browns balanced with slipper pinks and lilacs. Use Resene FX Paint Effects medium mixed with Resene

Cashmere to create a unique hand-painted “wallpaper” effect on the walls.

Add some shine with a DIY headboard painted in glossy Resene Enamacryl waterborne enamel tinted to Resene Caffeine and a bedside table made from stacked wooden boxes painted in Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Tom Tom. Finish the look with high-quality, practical materials like stonewashed natural linens.

Accessorise with items that can be mixed and matched as the seasons shift, and layer in decor painted with Resene testpots in coordinating colours. Mix patterns and textures to add depth and dimension to the

space. Hues like Resene Cashmere, Resene Karry, and Resene Bleach White can play off your “wallpaper” design, while muted grey blues and classic creams like Resene Nepal and Resene Pearl Lusta complement dusty coral accents.

Whether you’re creating a bedroom, living room, or any other space in your home, take the time to choose colors, textures, and patterns that reflect your personal style and make you feel luxurious every day.

For truly

HEALTHY HOMES

Kiwis are known as great building innovators, with DIY in our DNA. A team approach creates better homes for living.

However, look beyond the surface and you’ll find that New Zealand’s construction methods and Building Code are typically old school and below international best practice.

Lance Irving, of Irving Builders is passionate about driving Kiwi build methodology forward to meet green principles that are standardised overseas.

“Our future has to be in sustainable energy efficient building,” says Lance, “when I returned from Europe, I was surprised at how far behind we are. We need our homes to be cheaper to run, and more efficient in the long term,” says Lance.

His team insist on insulation beyond code specification, they then look at air tightness, the ability for air to flow, heat recovery systems, indoor air quality, and water efficiency.

“We are skilled at doing things in-house rather than subcontracting,” says Lance, “it gives us maximum control over our homes’ quality.”

Achieving truly healthy houses requires a strong consultancy team from the beginning, and Irving Builders has a solid working

relationship with the team at Inline Architecture. Together, they discuss with clients, concepts of passive design, alternative construction types, insulating above the minimum, heatrecovery systems, indoor air quality, water efficiency, solar power, and practical solutions.

A successful project starts with good planning and includes the builder, client, and designer. Inline Architecture has a strong focus on designing buildings that are healthy and financially achievable.

Architectural Designer at Inline, Kelly Pluck, says, “we encourage our clients to involve a main contractor and quantity surveyor early in the design process. This, a quality set of architectural plans, and robust supporting documentation will ensure a successful result.”

Irving Builders and Inline Architecture are known for going above and beyond for their clients, to ensure their projects are not only built on time and budget, but are enjoyable from start to end.

Tanksalot® manufacture innovative solutions that harvest rainwater for reuse, and storm water management.

Tanksalot tanks are particularly beneficial in an area like Canterbury, says owner Josh Pengelly.

“Our above-ground solutions not only look great, they eliminate the costs and complexity associated with below ground rainwater management alternatives.”

Their corrugated steel tanks are stylish, 100 percent UV proof, fire resistant, structurally rigid – which allows them to be installed hard up against a house, and 100 percent recyclable at the end of their life.

Tanksalot’s range of slimline tanks are perfect for urban environments where space is at

premium, and come in a range of standard colours and sizes between 650-10,000 litres.

As a local New Zealand manufacturer, they also o er a ‘made to measure’ service, enabling solutions to be designed and manufactured to meet their customers’ specific space and water volume requirements. The Tanksalot team will work with you to make this process easy and deliver an ideal solution.

VISION SHARING YOUR

The knowledge and skills required to begin that journey are not taught at school. That is a lesson that Stephanie Robertson, owner of VVV Real Estate, learned for herself and that is why she and her team have the understanding and the empathy to help others realise their dreams of home ownership.

Stephanie began her career in construction and over the years through trial and error has gained a wide breadth of experience across the property sector to

include residential development, interior design, landscaping, and of course, real estate.

She and her husband Andrew started from scratch, built up a property portfolio, and then established VVV Real Estate to further grow their vision. Now the company has expanded, but the aim at its core –which was Stephanie’s own dream and what continues to drive her - has never altered – that is guiding everyday New Zealanders into their own homes.

Each of the agents at VVV Real Estate shares Stephanie’s vision and it is their collective and shared approach that gives this company a unique and compassionate perspective on its relationships with clients. The agents come from diverse backgrounds meaning they form a team rich with experience and knowledge working together to get the best results.
