Time is also a factor that causes ructions at local government level. T he harder you work the luckier you get, and there is no substitute for hard work. That is the creed that Ben Lewis lives by. He co-founded Trenzseater in 2004, chasing his vision to fulfil a niche in the market for tailor-made luxuryTodayfurniture.thecompany has a global profile, and Ben plans to keep it that way for some time to come. He is continuously inspired by design, through architecture, interior design and classic furniture design where classic detailing provides a signature style, he explains. “I also enjoy, and am inspired by, fashion, art and antiques. Natural materials [marble, stone] inspire me for their unique, classic qualities, and I enjoy the character you get from solid timbers.” Regular visits to international fairs in Europe also provide ongoing inspiration, along with the new designs each of the company’s international suppliers release each“Beingyear.involved with these international brands is a privilege, it is inspiring, and it is also great to have the opportunity to see how a brand on a global scale works.” Design is a concept that is always evolving, he believes.

“My escape from work is golf, I love the challenge it presents and the competitive nature of the game.” His final words: “I always believe the harder you work the luckier you get and there is no substitute for hard work. DREAM BIG, THINK BIG, GO BIG!”

“I think it is constantly being improved and developed into something better, which always starts with an original idea. It is important to always be one step ahead of the market so your idea is first to market, we like to pride ourselves as design leaders.”NewZealand designers feature regularly on the world stage in various international competitions, from kitchen, bathroom and lighting designers through to interior designers. “New Zealand designers are always very innovative, creative and inspiring,” Ben adds. Personally, he is driven to succeed, and motivated to inspire through the industry and interior design. “I love motivational quotes and sayings which I think have a positive outcome in life. “I have an infectious passion for furniture and interior design, it is something that I work with on a day-in and day-out basis. It is my love of creating new interiors, new ideas and new designs – it’s a constant process.”Outside of work, Ben and wife Vicky have four children who keep them “busy, inspired and“Wemotivated”.lovespending time all together, enjoying their sports and activities which they are heavily involved in.

“I have an infectious passion for furniture and interior design, it is something that I work with on a day-in and day-out basis.”

When he was growing up, Ben’s initial inspiration came from his grandfather’s furniture business.

“His drive and passion for manufacturing some of the finest furniture in New Zealand gave me from an early age a grounding and foundation in an industry which I fell in love with,” he remembers.

The company now has three stores throughout New Zealand, which house all the product manufactured to order in New Zealand along with all selected European brands it distributes.

“Trenzseater was established with my brother Hamish, and together we have grown the business into one of New Zealand’s most prominent furniture, interior design stores.

“My first sofa I designed and was successful for production was when I was 14.” That was the start of many more. Today Ben designs all of Trenzseater’s furniture.

“Our Interior Design Service grew purely through industry experience.”

“I had a vision to start a high-end furniture and interior design business in New Zealand, which I did at the age of 20, to cater for a market where clients wanted something personalised, di erent to what anyone else had,” he adds.

“We literally bought the place on the day we saw it,” she remembers. Despite spending the last four years in Europe, her connection and love for Canterbury, holds strong. “Everything is on your doorstep,” she says. “It’s small city with big energy and plenty to do. “The beach is one direction, nature walks and adventure activities in another, with ski fields a short drive away.

“I love how the central city has come to life as well. It’s walkable and there are so many beautiful greenspaces. “I think Hagley Park is a real treasure. The commute to work is quick and easy too, which really helps to provide a lovely balanced lifestyle.” Adding to the attraction, she says, is the innovation eco-system, including industry clusters such as Food Fibre and Agritech, the Antarctic and Aerospace. “The ecosystem is filled with support, incubators, accelerator courses, start-up challenge events, all essential platforms to bring talent and innovations out of the woodwork.”

Sustainable Salons NZ is on a mission to end salon waste. LOOKING GOOD

goodfeel ABOUT

A s a proud partner, Hair Art & Beauty now recycles over 95 percent of waste generated in the salon including plastics, metals, and chemicals. Plastic waste is converted into plastic beads and remade into furniture, packaging, and even glasses frames.Sofar, Sustainable Salons has prevented nearly 90,000kgs of plastic waste from ending up in landfill. One of the biggest areas of waste in the salon industry is metals – from hairspray cans and colour tubes to aluminium foil. These are now sent to specialty recycling facilities, and the proceeds are donated to KiwiHarvest, an organisation that redistributes excess food to those in need. Four full heads of foils done at Hair, Art & Beauty provides a meal for a hungry person. Even hair clippings and chemical waste is recycled – cut hair is converted into booms to help clean up oil spills around the world. Human hair can hold over eight times its weight in oil, making it super e ective for this purpose. To prevent chemical waste from ending up in our waterways, it is sent to a processing facility where it is converted into CO2 and water, to be used in construction. The team are so excited to be continuing their journey of sustainability and social responsibility, so they (and their clients) can feel good about looking good! info@hairart.co.nz

Often what is seen on the latest runways has been seen before in decades past. ne of the hotIntrend.the1950s, sweater vests were the go-to layering item, more popular with men going for the ‘preppy’ look, and by the 1970s, they were hugely popular, for both men and women. But by the 90s, the vest had lost its edge. It became seen as an outdated, ‘grandpa-ish’ look. This was reflected in pop culture, with several ‘comically nerdy’ characters adopting the style - think Neville Longbottom, Raj Koothrappali, and Chandler Bing. The latest, modern obsession with sweater vests unsurprisingly coincides with the growing trend of genderless fashion. However long this current wave sticks around is unsure – but we are definitely on board with the cosy, comfy trans-seasonal sweater vest moment.

Although you can continue to use most skincare past their expiry (with less efficacy), there is one exception to the rule; sunscreen should never be used once expired. Spring is the perfect time to check these dates to ensure what you are using on your precious face is safe and effective. Learn more at quinnbeautyspa.co.nz/skincare-spring-clean

Then set personalised goals, in achievable increments and introduce lifestyle changes to gradually lose weight and keep it off. If you are keen to learn more, get in touch with Wigram Culture Fitness Gym. DO SKINCARE PRODUCTS ACTUALLY EXPIRE?

Nothing lasts forever, especially not skincare. So, the answer is yes. As a rule of thumb, once opening a product, use it up within the timeframe on the packaging. You can’t count on products to work as described once past the expiration date. Here’s why: When we open skincare, we expose it to air and microorganisms. Oxygen will begin to degrade the ingredients of the exposed product.

T he arrival of works by photographic artist Conor Clarke at their Kilmore Street premises is another way Southern Eye Specialists (SES) is looking after patients and championing eye care. The exhibition, As far as the eye can reach, is being held in conjunction with Jonathan Smart Gallery. Conor worked with the blind and low vision community, inviting participants to describe a landscape from memory before recreating the text in a series of large, touchable photographs.Eachremembered landscape incorporates braille to provide a multi-sensory experience for viewers. For exhibition organiser Dr Jim Borthwick, the event provides the perfect combination between the SES focus on patient care and his passion and support for local artists.“Ibelieve this is the first exhibition to be undertaken in an ophthalmology practice in New Zealand,” says Dr Borthwick. “It was also an important opportunity for us to support Blind Low Vision NZ, Glaucoma NZ and Macular Degeneration NZ, and a percentage of the proceeds from sales will go to these charities.” The reception area is a specific focus at SES, with patients often needing to spend time there while undertaking di erent tests and procedures. “The patient experience is so vital to get right,” he adds. “We’ve invested in making these spaces as warm and inviting as possible with a well-designed space, comfortable seating and, of course, plenty of beautiful artwork.” www.southerneye.co.nz

Superfood health is on our minds, our media, and social feeds. We are all wondering what we can do to minimise the effect of circulating ills and chills.

U nless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll have clocked the growth in scientific understanding of the importance of gut health. For premium gut health, the smart money is on probiotics. But where to start? You can’t do better than choosing a probiotic combined with prebiotics and whole food nutrients. That’s where Immunity Fuel comes in. Company Owners Lizzie Riddell and Damian Johnson believe Immunity Fuel Probiotic Superfood is one of the most potent natural probiotic rich superfoods in NZ. Certified organic, the probiotics are alive in the product as opposed to freeze dried, so they get to work straight away rather than needing additional prebiotics to reactivate in the gut. “Immunity Fuel is perfect if you have just finished a course of antibiotics, which will have damaged your good gut bacteria count,” says Damian. Stocked in over 100 retail outlets, including health food stores and pharmacies, the range includes a glutenfree option, in powders and vegecaps. “The product is an ideal boost to health.” says Lizzie “It gives your body the tools it needs to heal itself.” www.immunityfuel.co.nz

The Athens Yacht Club in Victoria Street is the epitome of a Greek family restaurant. Owners Emilios and Rebecca Kotzikas take their inspiration from his Greek Cypriot heritage. Sharing good food in a family environment is a large part of Greek culture, and that’s where Emilios and the team o er a taste of his homeland, right here in our central city.

Many traditional Greek dishes are made entirely of plant-based foods, and they’re perfect for pescatarians too as seafood is also a common ingredient.

Eating Greek is a time to sit, bond, and connect with the people around you.

The Athens Yacht Club | 179 Victoria Street | Call 03 365 0435.

It’s fresh, fun, and full of so many traditions that once you take a bite, you’ll feel like you are laying back in Greece, sipping wine and dipping your bread in olive oil.

Labels such as Greystone, Mon Cheval, Pegasus Bay, Amisfield, Butterworth, Te Mata, ManO-War, Maude, Blank Canvas, Nanny Goat, and Atra Rangi grace the wine list, a bonus for those who appreciate the finer things in life. From Otago, Canterbury, Marlborough, Martinborough, and Hawke’s Bay to Waiheke Island, the drinks list includes many wines not found elsewhere locally, along with speciality cocktails, craft beers, and fine French Champagnes.

“People forget what hospitality means. We look after them, greet them with a genuine smile, and make sure they have a great experience,” says Emilios.Wining goes with dining, and that’s especially true of Greek restaurants. Greece is, after all, the birthplace of Dionysus (god of wine), and the home of the first wine making. Emilios is as passionate about the wines on o er at The Athens Yacht Club, as he is about the restaurant’s traditional Greek fare.

Using local produce and premium meat and seafood, the carefully curated menu at The Athens Yacht Club celebrates the authentic flavours of Greece. Nightly specials are on the menu, alongside classics such as flamed cheese saganaki, slow roasted lamb, stu ed eggplant, crispy calamari and specialty vegetables and salads. Open seven nights from 5pm until late, bookings are essential.

HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR SHOWCASING YOUR SPRING BLOOMS FindJARSthree similar height jars, pop them in identical paper bags, tie around the top and add your sunniest flowers, with water of course. 2 SpringPOTS bulbs can be grown in pots, planted in autumn and ready for display in spring. Try hyacinths, crocuses and grape hyacinths for potted colour and gorgeous scents. 3 TallVASESvases of any colour and pattern with a casual bunch of yellow da odils, tulips or velvety irises will immediately shout spring. 1 B L O O M I N G

Even before spring arrives, bright yellow daffodils nodding their heads in parks, and paddocks are a sign that the season of growth is on its way. Just as they signal spring to passers-by, daffodils – along with other spring favourites such as narcissi and tulips – can also bring a touch of seasonal lightness into your home.

ncorporating patterns is a great way to introduce a multitude of colours into any space. Not only does the use of bold colour in areas such as your living room create a striking statement and lift the room, it’s also the perfect solution for hiding imperfect walls or floors.

LOUNGESTRIPED

If you’re just beginning to get creative with colour, Resene has an abundance of simple DIY project ideas to help you become familiar with their wide range of colours.Wanting just a touch of colour in your space? Select a bold, heated colour such as Resene Outrageous or Resene Guardsmen Red and try painting a vase or plant pot for your space. Starting with smaller projects such as these will build your confidence with colour and make it easier than ever to experiment with colour combinations. If you’re confident with colour and rearing to go, why not try something a little di erent in your space? A bold painted floor design can lift a room immeasurably, adding depth and introducing a unique talking point.Painted rugs are also a great way to express your creative side and can add an element of fun to the room.

Quarter Tea

With stripes in golden Resene Rusty Nail and deep Resene Blackout, this feature wall not only introduces movement through pattern but also provides a base colour scheme for the room’s décor.

With interior design, it’s never too late to change your stripes.

With a bold feature wall in the mix, it must remain cohesive within the space. One way to connect your feature wall is to draw out your hero colour and paint upcycled vases, plant pots or side tables.

While this living room has a mild and neutral palette with walls in Resene Quarter Tea and floor in dusty Resene Talisman, it is the striking addition of the striped side wall that raises this room from drab to fab.

T he latest build for Christchurch-based Boutique Architecture, the house has been designed to be bright and airy where it matters, and rugged enough to withstand the elements. Behind its brutalist exterior lies an open, vibrant interior world. Extra high 3.6m ceilings soar above the main living area, and are further accentuated by a sunken lounge.

Located close to the Rakaia River, this new build stands proudly on the highest point on the site, meaning it will weather any storm.

“We absolutely love this feature, and it was a nonnegotiable from our clients,” explains company director Alan Mayne. He adds that the strategy of a thin building footprint, with floor to ceiling windows to both sides, allows for cross ventilation and natural light to help the house breathe.

“Large pre-cast concrete panels have been used to anchor and ground the building to its open two hectare site,” he says, explaining that this material was selected for its durability and relationship to its rocky riverbed environment. Feng Shui and symmetry were big design considerations for the four bedroom, 320m square home. Each bedroom has its own ensuite with each bed carefully placed to capture views and follow Feng Shui principles. Maybe they can’t get home in time for a walk before the sun goes down, or will be out for extended periods and need someone to keep their pet company.Andofcourse, for the pet borrowers, these animal lovers may not be able to have their own pet, so spending time with a furry friend in this way is perfect. It’s no surprise that we Kiwis love our pets. Our four-legged friends really do become a part of the family.

You might notice a fine yellow film on the groundthis is pine pollen and it is the first to fall, followed by many other pollens throughout spring. Pollens stay trapped on the skin by the fur and can cause reactions and irritation. Grasses and grass seeds can also cause allergic reactions to the itchy pet, and these generally start around October. The irritation causes animals to scratch, bite or lick, which can cause a rash to transfer and quickly spread all over the body.

Judges’ comments noted: “The fit-out of the brewery comprises a large industrial glass wall, a front counter area, and a mezzanine fit-out.  It is first and foremost functional and essentially respectful of the heritage of the brewery. Combined with the existing warehouse the carefully curated insertions achieve an authenticity and old-school factory feel. This is not a situation where the fit-out is ever complete but an evolving adaptation to the character of the space,” they noted. It has been amazing to watch confidence returning to our industry and see conference delegates in and around our city during the the past few months. It’s spring and Christchurch is ON SHOW again! This is the time of the year that we celebrate everything our city has on offer during spring.

Recent reports show hotel nights are up, we’re seeing people are heading out and about more, and at Te Pae Christchurch our booking calendar for this year is filling up. And it goes further than just our direct spending, with events at Te Pae Christchurch contributing 28,000 hotel nights to local accommodation providers. We hope the increased confidence will continue and be the catalyst for further investment in the ongoing regeneration of Christchurch, leading to more development and opportunities for our city. We are pulling together candidate profiles to provide at-aglance intelligence on where the mayoral candidates stand on the issues that matter to business. Every weekend, almost without exception, I spend a portion of my time planning for the week and month ahead. Sometimes it’s a fairly clinical exercise: confirming appointments, researching different market indicators, prepping for oneon-one sessions and working on our company’s goals and direction. Sounds straightforward and it is, but at other times it requires a much deeper overview because when you’ve been doing things for a very long time it’s easy to keep doing them the same way without question. I like to counter this by venturing down rabbit holes looking at new ways of applying different creative processes to the business. There’s always so much to learn or relearn and, being curious by nature, I sometimes start with the simplest of Here’sconcepts.one that began with a TED Talk by Margaret Heffernan, a Professor of Practice at the University of Bath School of OneManagement.ofthepresentation’s main focus areas was Social Capital. Social Capital is all about relationships. It enables people to work together as a team rather than as isolated individuals chasing their own goals. It powers up sports teams and companies alike. An easy explanation given by Professor Heffernan was: “it’s the mortar rather than the bricks” in a relationship, team or business. It holds us together, driving greater empathy and connection. Here’s where it becomes significant, and it feels particularly important to me as part of a leadership team. It’s where ideas flow, loyalty grows and trust strengthens. It can start with the simple easy gestures: greeting everyone every day, every time; shared food and events; celebrating birthdays and successes; business planning aimed at developing skills and talents; as well as a ‘hand-up not hand-out’ philosophy. There are numerous ways of making the mortar in your business stronger, but you must focus on that growth.
