From the Editor H

ello Christchurch and Metropol readers. I am excited to have taken the editorial reins of such a well-loved iconic lifestyle magazine and have already started exploring this beautiful vibrant city and its wider environs. I am especially looking forward to meeting those who call Christchurch home, and discovering what makes it so special for each one of you. This issue looks at those seeking to escape the city for a scenic or adventurous holiday, maybe soaking in Hanmer’s hot pools, sliding down the slopes at Mt Hutt, or hitting a mountain trail to get in some biking. Of course, now the Trans-

100% Recyclable Metropol is printed with paper is PEFC-certified (No: 40-31-33) to be from forests that are managed in line with the strictest environmental, social and economic requirements. Certification provides assurance the paper we use is from sustainably managed forests; a forest that will be around for generations to come.

Tasman bubble has opened, overseas travel is another option, but we will save our ideas on that until the next issue. Earlier this week TVNZ’s The Apprentice Aotearoa burst into life on our screens with none-other than local businessman Mike Pero in the CEO hotseat. Metropol caught up with him for a chat about Circulation his new role, and Metropol just how tough it is. Also in this issue we talked to The Breeze Breakfast Show host Hilary Muir about life, love and making waves, check out the latest in health, beauty and fashion, ABC AUDITED PRINTER AUDITED and showcase all our usual ddreered sections. Life’s a

breeze WORDS LYNDA PAPESCH

Hilary Muir breezes into our interview. Bright, bubbly and full of life; just as she sounds on her morning radio shows. By the time we meet, she’s already done her early morning start at The Breeze, and most of a full day, yet the enthusiasm hasn’t dimmed.

E

nthusiasm for people, for life and for causes are what keep Hilary on the go. She’s always been a people person and her various roles reflect that. Breakfast show presenter, popular MC, marriage celebrant, funeral celebrant, mother, friend and confidante. And she loves a good anecdotal story. Those who tune into her show regularly know all this, enjoying the banter between Hilary and co-host Fitzy (Dave Fitzgerald) and their choice of topics. She adores radio and its people dynamic. “I wake up in the morning, bounce out of bed and make the most of the day. I love people, company and radio.” Thirty-seven years’ radio experience hasn’t dimmed her joie de vie; she’s still eager to hit the airwaves each morning, seeing every day as an opportunity to bring to life on radio the lives of Cantabrians. “There’s so much choice whether it is people or topics. Whatever we talk about is relatable to our listeners.” Originally from the deep south – Invercargill and then Dunedin – Hilary has been with The Breeze since its inception two decades ago this year. She has always worked in radio – 15

6 13 May, 2021 Metropol

years in Dunedin, including seven years also reading news on Regional television, two of which were with Jim Mora, and a parenting programme on TV called Parent Time. “I’ve always worked with male DJs; it’s an awesome contrast,” she explains, naming James Daniels and latterly Fitzy as her most recent co-hosts. Christchurch stole her heart several years ago and for Hilary it is home. “It’s such an evolving place; I really love the people. They have so many stories to tell and some have been through so much, yet they still stand strong and proud of their city. There’s a real courage amongst the people here.” Work hard but take time out to relax is part of her personal ethos. Time out is spent relaxing with family and friends, and holidaying in her regular go-to destination of Kaiteriteri in Nelson Tasman. For the last 20 years she has spent summer holidays staying at the same bach and loving its simplicity. “No dishwasher, no wifi, everyone takes their own linen and it’s so close to Breakers Beach. A perfect holiday bach.” Then it’s back to Christchurch, swapping ocean waves for radio waves, and the beach for The Breeze.

T

he multi-award-winning artist was to have headlined the Bluesfest at Byron Bay earlier this year, until Covid-19 canned that. The group’s seventh studio album HOME debuted at number one on the ARIA Charts and was nominated for Best Independent Blues & Roots Album at the 2019 AIR Awards. John is a journeyman from way back. “I started playing the guitar when I was 16, and I’m 43 now,” he recalls. “I began busking instrumental songs when I was 21. As a teenager I used to write songs just for myself, so it took me a while to make my first demo tape. I remember the first person who asked me for a tape came back two or three times – and when I still didn’t have one, she walked away shaking her head. I realised at that point that I really had to get off my butt and do it.” That first cassette sold over 3500 copies – a number that a fair few signed artists would be happy with, let alone a busker. Many performers would have stopped right there, content to jam their youth away, but Butler knuckled down to building a profile. “It was a gradual progression from busking to playing in bars and clubs,” he remembers. “I did gigs in the week and busked at the weekends, but as more and more gigs came along, I just wasn’t around to busk anymore. I had all these songs written, so I decided to share my act with

drums and bass and formed the John Butler Trio.” Butler’s recorded catalogue has paved the way to major success, although he has never rested on his laurels. In the mid-2000s he set up his label plus a charitable organisation – The Seed Fund – which provides grants to artists and musicians. His involvement in a long list of environmental campaigns is as integral to Butler as his music. “Ah, don’t get me started!” he chuckles. “I’m laughing here, because otherwise I’d have to cry. The hydraulic fracking that’s going on in Australia and the UK and USA is out of control, and completely evil. They’re messing with our water now, and I like clean water and clean air. Does that make me a fundamentalist? I don’t think so. At least the environment is a mainstream issue now, not a left-leaning concern as it used to be. Personally, I pick and choose where I can be involved, and where I can be most potent to a campaign.” Add Butler’s perspective and worldview to the new songs on HOME and it’s no wonder that they add up to such an immersive experience. Crowd-stirring anthems feature in the form of Tahitian Blue and Running Away, as well as atmospheric drones in Wade in The Water. If you’re looking for big country-rock sounds, look no further than Miss Your Love.

Arriba, arriba! Latin festivities! Cantabrians are set to get a taste of South American culture later this year when the Latin Street Festival “explodes” into central Christchurch later this year. Performers, artists, street food, live music and more is on the agenda for the exciting event.

cheduled for October 31, the event promises “an explosion of Latin cultural celebration,” and is supported by Christchurch City Council. It features live dance and music performances, cuisine and crafts to engage locals in authentic Latin and Hispanic culture. It is the second rendition of the festival, after a successful first run delivered “a full Latino experience in the heart of Christchurch” in November. It was held in Cathedral Square, which is earmarked for the second event, too. Event organisers say the local Latin American community is growing significantly in Christchurch, which is attracting more locals to join in cultural activities like Latin dance, or to experience Latin cuisine and language. Visitors will be able to participate in dance workshops, create arts and crafts, and connect with the language and food of Latin and Hispanic Heritage. Event organiser Denise Lovato was born in Argentina and wanted to bring a slice of her heritage to Christchurch. She is also organising more Latin events, with the Latin American and Spanish film festival later this year, too. The free event is in conjunction with the University of Canterbury and The Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū and will run from October 27 to 31. Visit vivalavida.co.nz for more information about the Latin Street Festival, and other ways to experience South American culture without needing to leave the city.

Firing K st Most of us have seen his beaming smile on real estate hoardings and advertisements, and now Mike Pero takes centre stage weekly on TVNZ 1’s The Apprentice, Aotearoa.

P

ero definitely knows business – he should do, given he’s made many millions of dollars for his companies. Aged 31 he launched the mortgage broking business that still bears his name and 20 years later expanded into real estate sales. The winner of multiple business awards, he’s a motorcycle enthusiast and a six-time National Motor Cycle Road Racing champion. And now a television star! The prominent business mogul heads a team of advisors in The Apprentice, pitting contestants against one another in challenges to test their business acumen. The first episode aired last week and although the trademark smile makes an appearance, Pero’s final words to failed contestants are still the familiar “… you’re fired.” That said, the boardroom bullying that is a trademark of the original Donald Trump series in the USA, and Lord Sugar’s UK style too, has disappeared as Pero, and his advisors Cassie Roma and Justin Tomlinson, take a more “Kiwi” approach. “I made it clear that my appearance on the show was conditional upon me not fitting the same description given to Trump and Lord Sugar. The producers Great Southern TV agreed that I could say what I liked, within reason, and run the boardroom as I felt necessary. The only prerequisite was I had to lose at least one candidate per episode.” His style is to offer constructive, educational and inspiring advice to those on the show and at home to apply to their own business endeavours. He’s there to bring out the best in them. “Yes, I have the difficult task of dismissing one candidate each episode and that was difficult, even from the first episode.

12 13 May, 2021 Metropol

“I would go home feeling quite sad after a firing. The standard of candidates was so high. “My last three words to all candidates was “[name] … you’re fired!” I can still remember those words to each and every one of them. I’d like to add to those words and say “[name], you’re fired, from this show, but you’re going to continue to be a success. Go away now and show the world how good you really are – I hope we meet again!” As to what he personally looks for in an upand-coming business executive: “Like most Kiwi CEOs, all you want are good hard working team members that believe in fair trading, honesty, effort, commitment, drive and loyalty. “The easiest way to succeed, I believe, is to recruit the right type of people from the beginning. You need people you can rely upon and people that will think like you – preferably smarter than you. They will be self-motivated and capable of making good decisions that bring value to the organisation.” Age, gender, religion and nationality have no bearing on success, he says. “I have employed all types – from teens to 70-year-olds, a number of religions and various cultures. With youth you can get fresh ideas and entrepreneurs that haven’t had a fall yet, but at the other end of the table I have found the wisdom that comes with age. The mature approach, often more cautious and not out there trying to earn a stripe. Women also bring a special intuition and a special sense that many men don’t have. “I always advocated at least one woman (or more) on a board. They tend not to be too focused on egos. We men are always out to prove a point.”

Why do we have pets?

BUDDY

“I am certain that almost as soon as man began to walk this earth, we also began our long association with other creatures. These encounters soon developed into close animal-human relationships that we would describe today as having pets,” says Geoff Mehrtens of the Wigram Vet and The Good Dog Spa.

T

here are images from cave dwellers that depict early domestication of horses and dogs,” he adds. “Humans are sociable beings who thrive with healthy social interactions. Unfortunately, modern society leaves many of us exposed to loneliness and stress. Covid-19 has accelerated this problem for some and has touched even the most resilient and well balanced of us in the past year.” Geoff says that veterinarians have seen a strong trend in people valuing their pets even more as they grapple with the huge

global ramifications of Covid-19. “Lockdown is much more bearable when we have our favourite moggy snuggled up in bed with us. The overwhelmingly positive attitudes of dogs uplift our spirits daily and let us restock our depleted happiness reserves. “As a veterinarian, I am in one of the most privileged positions in society where I and our team can intervene daily to help these pets that mean so much to us. Such job satisfaction is not found by everyone.” Recently Geoff caught up with Buddy, a working sheepdog from the West Coast. He suffered potentially life-threatening

injuries in a tractor accident but today is back running in the surf on his daily swim at the beach. “His owners spent more money than was economically sensible on his pelvis rebuild and I feel honoured to have been involved with his treatment,” says Geoff. “He became a favourite of the nurses and the physio. Even the day-care girls and the groomers got to know him. It was quite emotional for us to see him again. “Pets give us so much love and affection and demand almost nothing in return. We are lucky to have them.” www.wigramvet.co.nz

Awesome road trips WORDS LYNDA PAPESCH

New research has revealed that the Great Ocean Road in Australia is the most beautiful road trip route in the world according to Instagram data. Others at the top of people’s bucket lists include Big Sur in California, and the United Arab Emirates’ Jebel Hafeet.

M

any people are still wary of international travel and staycations are continuing to rise, however travellers can tick off their bucket lists without leaving the comfort of their car. Researchers anaylsed more than seven million Instagram hashtags associated with the world’s most popular road trip destinations, calculating how many

Instagram pictures are shared per kilometre of the journey; the country with the most Instagram posts per mile being crowned the most picturesque in the world. The results reveal that Australia’s Great Ocean Road (pictured) is considered the most beautiful road trip route in the world; covering 253km of road in the ‘land down under,’ with an impressive 1,321,570

hashtagged images of it on Instagram. That equates to nearly 5224 photographs per kilometre. Stretching alongside the south-eastern coast of Australia between the cities of Torquay and Allansford, the beautiful route was constructed in 1932 and has continued to be one of the most popular tourist excursions in Australia.

Christchurch is such a central South Island location that like the tentacles of an octopus, many roads lead out of it to exciting destinations within a short driving span. Half a day’s drive will take you to Nelson Tasman, Marlborough, the West Coast, Central Otago and Southland. A few less and you can be in Akaroa, Hanmer Springs or Kaikoura in time for morning tea if you depart early enough. As a region, Canterbury has so much to offer all ages and budgets. For skiers there are 24 ski fields within easy reach. For hikers and bikers there are plenty of trails to head out on, foodies and wine buffs are spoilt for choice and so too are couples looking for a romantic get-away. Canterbury and its surrounding environs are indeed your oyster!

North Canterbury

3

4

Canterbury’s Waimakariri and Hurunui districts are located between Christchurch and Kaikoura and across to Hanmer Springs. This North Canterbury region serves up the full menu of New Zealand attractions. Meet the people putting the region on New Zealand’s wine and food map, take in the panoramic views, cycle or walk the Waipara Valley Vineyard Trail, let your hair loose on a jetboat, cast your rod and catch your dinner, carve up the wild surf if you dare, or schuss down a pristine piste. It’s all there for the doing!

Awesome Akaroa Home to rare Hector’s dolphins, Akaroa is southeast of Christchurch. The area boasts its own beach on the eastern shore of Akaroa Harbour, a museum where visitors and locals can read about the town’s development, especially its 19th-Century British and French colonial history, and many exciting excursion opportunities. Take the car, head out on a cycle trail, hop on a sightseeing boat or a sea kayak or even opt for a scenic helicopter flight around Akaroa; it’s all ready and waiting for you. Some tour operators even leave from Christchurch, making it much easier to explore this seaside town.

Top of the south North of Kaikoura lie Marlborough and Nelson Tasman. Home to vineyard eateries and cellar doors, boutique brewers and gourmet restaurants, the Top of the South is a cornucopia for foodies. Activities abound including cycling the wine trails, hiring a boat and heading out into the picturesque Marlborough Sounds, taking a charter cruise, a ride in an historic airplane or visiting the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre. Other activities include exploring Abel Tasman National Park and scenic Golden Bay, skydiving over two islands, experiencing a white-water rush or taking a trip down memory lane at Nelson’s Classic Car Museum.

What more can we say, other than “Welcome” The Cairns Alpine Resort - Lake Tekapo “Wow - Tasteful, contemporary and cosy with everything you need. Homemade bread on arrival and The Cairns team so welcoming and on hand to help with everything we needed including our Mackenzie itinerary. The farm animals were a lovely surprise as were the stunning views from the The Cairns Golf Course. We will definitely return and highly recommend the resort to our friends”. - Jules from Auckland

Arthur’s Pass National Park Nature lovers, hikers and mountain climbers flock here to discover the magnificent flora, fauna and vistas of the Southern Alps. Spend some time in New Zealand’s highest township, Arthur’s Pass Village - the gateway to discovering this alluring mountainous area on foot. The scenic TranzAlpine train journey also stops here, en-route daily between Christchurch and Greymouth.

Castle Hill (Kura Tawhiti Conservation Area) Lake Coleridge For a high-country escape, and some great fishing, head to this picturesque setting. New Zealand’s first hydro lake and a famed fishing spot, Lake Coleridge and the surrounding area is home to everything from skiing, horse treks, farm tours and four-wheel driving to high country garden tours and golf, including the challenge of no. 10 at Terrace Downs High Country Resort.

The area is of special cultural, spiritual and historical significance to Ngai Tahu who named it Kura Tawhiti (treasure from afar). Hidden amongst the limestone outcrops are traces of 500-yearold charcoal drawings traditionally said to have been left by the Waitaha, the first people to travel through this area. These limestone rock formations are the water eroded remnants of limestone formed during the Oligocene age 30-40 million years ago.

Walks, biking and exploring Walking is a great way to explore all the corners of this stunning region. Or you can hop on a mountain bike; there are plenty of trails for the daring, alongside gentler options for those seeking a leisurely ride. Alternatively, canter through the backcountry on horseback or dart through jagged gorges by jet boat. Top walks to research are: Devils Punchbowl, Rakaia Gorge Walking Track, Washpen Falls, Cave Stream, and Harts Creek.

A feminine perspective Law truly is an awesome profession! So says litigator Charlotte Houghton, a new partner at Anderson Lloyd.

A

member of the firm’s Christchurch-based litigation team, Charlotte recently became a partner shortly after a 12-month parental leave break with her second son. Her promotion (together with the appointment of three other female partners in 2021) puts Anderson Lloyd ahead, having the highest proportion of female equity partners of any large law firm in New Zealand. Her expertise is in contentious personal and corporate insolvency disputes, debt recovery and security enforcement. “I also advise on complex commercial disputes including disputes between directors, shareholders and trustees and disputes in relation to construction contracts.” A favourite aspect of her job is the opportunity to become

an expert in areas that she may not otherwise have been exposed to. “In big litigation files you often get to dive down into the detail of industries other than the law. For example, I have learnt a lot about farming, mining, construction and so many other things. “Another facet I enjoy is building relationships with clients. One of our values at Anderson Lloyd is to ‘keep it real’ which is about being authentic to the core and forming deep relationships. This is a value that resonates with me as I think we are in a position of privilege when it comes to representing our clients. “No one is particularly happy when they have to contact their litigation lawyer; they are stressed and often in very difficult situations, which we get

to help them through (and I love that). I love helping people and it allows me to draw on my psychology background as well.” Charlotte initially graduated university with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in psychology and education. Approaching the end of her degree, she was drawn to part of a psychology paper about the legal obligations on psychologists (around disclosure and the duty of confidentiality). “I found myself more interested in that than anything else I had studied. As I had already completed one degree, I was able to do first year law and part of second year law concurrently. I have never regretted that decision to follow my gut and study law.”

She’s happy to encourage others into law, although she adds that it should be for the right reasons. “It can be a hard profession to work in. Our clients often find disputes stressful and there can be tense moments. But helping them through that is very rewarding and as the saying goes: ‘if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life’.” Now Charlotte’s looking forward to building, expanding and strengthening her own practice and the firm’s litigation practice together with her litigation partners in Christchurch, Queenstown and Dunedin. Add to that raising “two good wee men” and running a few half marathons and that sums up her bucket list for the next few years.

Tree-ting our environment

Urban tree plantings have been found to improve people’s mental and physical health, improve air quality, conserve water, preserve soil, and support wildlife.

icoh is a company committed to the environment and actively involved with planting thousands of urban native trees through its annual Big Green Day Out. This year’s plant-a-thon helped beautify Cranford Basin. Duane Smithson, Christchurch branch manager, says the day was an amazing success. “Staff volunteered their time to don gumboots, pick up spades and plant trees, assisted by their families, supporting organisations and of course our beloved Crusaders. It was a great opportunity to help shape and grow the new Northern Corridor of Christchurch.” Ricoh helps plant thousands of native trees annually throughout New Zealand. The environment and sustainability are among the company’s core values and it practises what it preaches. “A sustainable society is one that balances planet (the environment), people (society) and prosperity (our economic activities),” says Duane. “Whether that’s through improving our own business efficiencies, providing recycling for our machines and toners, supporting organisations championing green policies, or planting thousands of trees annually, we aim to lead businesses in being sustainable.” www.ricoh.co.nz

Creating brow beauty Some are born with great eyebrows, some achieve great eyebrows, and the rest of us have great eyebrows cosmetically tattooed upon us, preferably by Angela Millar, semipermanent eyebrow, eyeliner (and at the end of May) lips specialist at KM Surgical.

A

ngela’s brow and eyeliner work is bespoke to your face and desired look. Digital technology, together

with nano needling enables adjustable speed and needle configuration. Clients can achieve feathered, powdered,

ombre or a combination finish on their brows, and as with the eyeliner, the pigments can be placed further into the skin for a

stronger and longer lasting look, or with less depth for a softer look. Brow micro-pigmentation takes between two and twoand-a-half hours. The first hour is spent shaping the existing brow, mapping and drawing before the micro-pigmentation begins. Angela loves the fact that “perfect brows are with you throughout your day. You wake up with them, they go swimming with you or to the gym and out to dinner that night.” Angela’s work is also popular with clients with alopecia or who are going into a course of chemotherapy. Angela says clients are aged from 18 to 87 and choosing both subtle and bolder looks in brows and eyeliner. KM Surgical offers the fabulous advantage of also having laser and filler specialists on site. “We integrate to correct unsatisfactory work done elsewhere, and to combine all the client’s facial treatments,” Angela says. Plus, reassuringly, dermatologists are on site if there are medical constraints or skin imperfections.

Reawaken your collagen Autumn and winter are great times to address the signs of ageing that are the most annoying, such as loose and sagging skin, and the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic has Ultherapy® to do just that.

D

r Brigid Lee says that Ultherapy® is the only FDA-cleared, noninvasive procedure that can lift and tighten the neck, chin and brow, and improve lines and wrinkles on the chest, without surgery or downtime. Ultherapy® uses precise micro-focused ultrasound technology with visualisation (MFU-V) to target the deep structural layers of the skin without disrupting the skin’s surface. It delivers a precisely controlled amount of ultrasound energy at the correct depth and temperature to stimulate collagen growth in the three targeted tissue levels. After a treatment, the body’s tissue repair process stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin, creating a gradual lifting effect over the next three to six months.

With global ambassadors for Ultherapy ® such as Christie Brinkley, Jennifer Aniston, Kim Kardashian and Gwyneth Paltrow this nonsurgical procedure promises to kick-start the skin’s failing collagen and put it on high speed rewind to reverse the signs of ageing. Dr Lee says the ideal candidates are those who are in good physical condition, with mild to moderate skin laxity who are looking for a subtle and gradual improvement to the brow, cheek, jowl or neck areas. Or those just wishing to delay the signs of ageing! Ultherapy® lifts, sculpts and tightens the skin from the inside out, without surgery and with no downtime and it’s on special during May. www.skinrejuvenationclinic.co.nz

Fluff your brows ladies

Beauty trends take a significant turn this year. What was once an obsession, now makes us cringe. I’m talking about dramatic lashes that could pick you up and fly you away, highlighter that’s brighter than the sun and well, we can’t forget about overdrawn brows. This year however, it’s all about simplicity and we are all for it!

luffy brows and natural, dewy looking skin are the go-to this season; a combination that will make you feel 10 years younger. Fluffy brows provide a subtle face lift as you are forcing your brow hairs to remain upwards, in turn, lifting your face (try the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Freeze for this). Natural and dewy looking skin underemphasises fine lines and wrinkles. Pair this look with a deep lip colour if you feel like showing off your adventurous side.

F

20s to 30s:

It’s still possible to even out your skin tone, hide blemishes and boost your skins appearance using a little bit of foundation; however, if you have some blemishes you would like to cover even more, use only a touch of concealer to do this. Dampen your brush or sponge using some water before applying liquid or cream products, this will help loosen up the texture and allow for a more airbrushed finish. Try the Too Faced Dew You Foundation - it’s magic in a bottle.

30s to 40s:

If hydrating sprays are not part of your makeup routine - you are missing out! Try the Mario Badescu Facial Sprays before, during and after your makeup application to help hydrate your skin. For an added benefit, spritz your foundation brush with some spray before applying your cream or liquid foundation, this will allow the foundation to sit on your skin so much better. You can use the same technique for cream or liquid bronzer too.

40s+:

Avoid full coverage foundations as these tend to emphasise fine lines and wrinkles. Instead try a lighter coverage foundation such as the Clarins Everlasting Youth Fluid Foundation - this is a favourite of ours! Apply a pea-sized amount or two to a foundation brush and gently blend it into your face (never use your hands to blend in foundation). For an added dewy effect, combine some foundation with your favourite moisturiser before applying it on your skin.

Now trending in wellness WORDS MORGAN TAIT

Whether you see wellness as a commodified buzzword or a holistic wellbeing tool to embrace; there is no denying the influence of the concept. And in 2021, as the world continues to prioritise its health and wellbeing for pandemic-related reasons, there are some new wellness trends on the scene. Metropol has compiled those making waves this year. PREACHING ABOUT PREBIOTICS

BATHING IN SOUND…

You’ve heard of probiotics – and the associated health benefits – but have you heard of prebiotics? A type of fibre, prebiotics feed probiotics to help them do their thing. Find these in foods like artichokes, garlic, onions, leeks, oats, asparagus and bananas, as well as in herbal supplements.

Immerse yourself in the soothing meditative experience of a sound bath. Intended to encourage listeners to release repetitive thoughts and balance energy, a sound bath is a therapeutic experience. Usually occurring in a class taken by an instructor or sound therapist, but you can also DIY with curated playlists.

Getting good quality shuteye is top of the wellness to-do list in 2021, and people are employing a raft of tools and techniques to help them achieve their best night’s sleep. Yes, the substance which helps plants get nutrients (and makes them green). This pigment is getting some serious attention from wellness warriors, especially on Tiktok. ust because you have silver hair coming in and you want to go grey gracefully doesn’t mean it has to be a silver colour,” she says. “We help you discover if you are warm or cool based on hair, skin and eyes, and from there we help you decide the best look for you.” While those with a warm base suit silver hair with soft champagne, sandy iris, strawberry beige, or translucent butterscotch tones, those with a cool base suit silver dove, champagne lilac or platinum iris. “Getting your colour undertone is so important and when this is done right it gives your face an instant brightening, lift and can take years off,” Vicki says. “Get it wrong and you will feel drab and look drained and older… consultation is key!”

boosters

Alas, the seasons of sniffles are upon us. And no one likes to be struck down by a cold or flu! If you are keen to keep the bugs at bay, Metropol has compiled some science-backed tips for keeping that immune system in fighting form.

Super-powered sleep

Inadequate sleep stresses the body, making it more vulnerable to illnesses and less efficient at recovering. Without sleep, important hormones like cortisol spike and can cause an increased appetite, weight gain, fatigue and supress immune function. To prioritise your sleep, try expertrecommended tips such as going to bed an hour earlier, banning screens from your sleep space and setting aside time to relax and unwind before bed.

Sayonara, stress!

Anyone who has ever dealt with a prolonged period of stress could probably testify how the experience affected their physical health, and science agrees. Ongoing stress can lead to mental health issues, heart disease, high blood pressure and even stroke. On a day-to-day level, mindfulness and meditation techniques can reduce stress and improve sleep, brain function and mood. Try apps such as Headspace and Insight Timer or visit mentalhealth.org.nz for more resources.

health

Pre-winter

Vitamin power

Protecting your physical health should be top of your to-do list when it comes to keeping winter’s woes away. There may be fewer sunshine hours, but keeping up your vitamin D helps immunity, and supplements of the vitamin have been linked to reducing risk of respiratory infections. Magnesium not only helps muscle recovery for those fitness bunnies out there, but it also helps calm the nervous system, lower blood pressure and is a recommended natural sleep aid. We’re huge fans of the liquid vitamin C sachets, which deliver a high-powered, immuneboosting dose in one gooey mouthful. Feed the good bugs with probiotics and eat wholefoods which supply your body with an A to Z of vitamins and minerals for fighting-fit body function.

Active intentions

As the temperatures drop and the shorter days kick in, it may be tempting to snuggle up on the couch, skip that workout and settle in for nights of your favourite series and comforting snacks. Regular exercise and time outside not only boost your mental health, but is also a functional way to help you sleep at night. Exercise increases long-term health and reduces the risk of illnesses like heart disease, certain cancers, diabetes – and can even make you smarter!

Super salads go with anything. WORDS LYNDA PAPESCH

Salads are not just for summer eating; indeed, they go with almost anything, and ingredients are as varied as those who create the dish.

F

rom sausages to steak, crayfish to chicken, a salad may just be the perfect accompaniment. Vegetable varieties and availability vary from season to season, and this also makes salads exciting. A summer salad with basil, tomatoes, crunchy lettuce and a tasty Italian dressing may be ideal for a barbeque, whereas

a roasted winter vegetable salad with garlic and herbs works better with a roast. One of my favourites is a pseudoCaesar salad. Use cos lettuce if you can find it, but otherwise any variety will do. Pan-fried chicken leftovers, crispy bacon, croutons, and parmesan work, as do herbed fish goujons, or just a few

pieces of a spicy sausage for a quick and tasty meal. Potato salad is another one that crosses all seasons and works well with many meats. For a German-style, use chopped gherkins and eggs, bacon, or ham, and even a few chopped spring onions in with your potatoes. This is one salad that can be served hot or cold.

Green goodness

lemon and parmesan risotto Gluten-free

Serves 4

Vegan

Ready in 45 minutes

Method

Ingredients

Puréeing frozen peas and adding them to a risotto just before it’s ready provides this wonderful zing of freshness. You can also purée lightly cooked broccoli, zucchini or spinach and use them in place of the peas.

3 tbsp butter or neutral oil 2 onions, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1½ cups risotto rice ½ cup white wine 6 cups hot gluten-free vegetable stock, plus a little extra if needed 1 tsp salt ground black pepper, to taste 4 handfuls baby spinach leaves 2 cups frozen peas, thawed 1 cup grated parmesan Finely grated zest and Juice of 1 lemon Pea tendrils or rocket (arugula), to garnish

Heat butter or oil in a large, heavy-based pot, add onions and garlic and cook over a medium heat until softened but not browned (8 minutes). Add rice and stir for 1–2 minutes to lightly toast. Add wine and allow to evaporate fully, then add hot stock, salt and pepper, and stir to combine. Simmer gently, stirring now and then, until rice is creamy and just tender (about 18 minutes). If the mixture dries out during cooking, add a little more stock or water—it should be wet enough to fall from the spoon.

HERB OIL 1⁄2 packed cup fresh parsley, watercress or rocket (arugula) leaves 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil a pinch of salt

While rice is cooking, make herb oil by puréeing herbs with oil and salt, adding a little water if needed to thin to a pouring consistency. Boil a jug of water. Place spinach and peas in a bowl, cover with boiling water and allow to stand for 2 minutes. Drain, then purée with a hand wand blender or in a food processor. Add to risotto with parmesan, lemon zest and juice, and stir to combine. Adjust seasonings to taste and warm through. To serve, divide risotto between heated serving bowls and top with a drizzle of herb oil and pea tendrils or rocket (if using).

Chocolate & almond butter swirl brownies

Method Heat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan and line a 20cm x 20cm brownie tin with baking paper. For the non-vegan brownies: For the chocolate batter, melt 150g of the chocolate (saving the rest for the top) with the oil in a small pan over a low heat. Whisk together the dry ingredients. Create a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and add the eggs and vanilla. Stir to combine. Pour in the melted chocolate and give the batter another stir until the chocolate is mixed through. Make the almond butter batter by whisking together the sugar, baking powder and a pinch of salt in a large bowl. Add the egg and vanilla, whisk again, add the almond butter, stir until well combined and set aside. The batter will be thick.

MAKES 12

For the vegan brownies: Follow the steps above, replacing the eggs with the flaxseed. For the chocolate batter, mix 8 tsp of flaxseed with 6 tbsp of warm water in a separate bowl. For the almond butter, mix 4 tsp of flaxseed with 3 tbsp of warm water in a separate bowl. For both mixtures, leave to thicken for 15 minutes before using.

Ingredients For the chocolate batter 200g dark chocolate, chopped into 5mm chunks (150g for melting, the rest for the top) 100g coconut oil 100g white spelt flour 100g golden caster sugar ½ tsp baking powder 2 organic eggs, or 8 tsp flaxseed

1 tsp vanilla extract or paste For the almond butter batter 75g golden caster sugar 1/2 tsp baking powder 1 organic egg, or 4 tsp flaxseed 1 tsp vanilla extract or paste 100g smooth almond butter

Recipe extracted from One: Pot, Pan, Planet by Anna Jones. HarperCollins. RRP $54.99

Dollop alternate heaped spoonfuls of each batter into the tin. Once all the batter is in, use a butter knife to swirl it in figures of eight. Top with the remaining chocolate, pressing each piece slightly into the batter, then sprinkle with a pinch of flaky sea salt. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until the brownies are just set with a little wobble and the almond butter swirls are golden. Take out of the oven and leave to cool in the tin completely before cutting.

The days are getting shorter, and the temperature is getting cooler … but for The Lake House that is not a problem. The solution? A handful of heating options and a bunch of blankets.

Smoke Rolleston

oats are always on the lake, says owner Vanetia Bingham. And the sunsets are particularly beautiful on the deck by the fire. At The Lake House the current buzzword is “new.” With a new head chef at the reins, peruse the new autumn menu and salivate at the selection on offer; seafood chowder, duck confit and twice cooked pork belly are just a few standouts. Last time we checked in with the restaurant, there were behind the scenes preparations involving a second location for the increasingly popular Smoke menu and experience. And as a result, the slowsmoked American BBQ dining experience can now be found in Rolleston. A unique interior features a custom-made fitout where everything is made from burnt wood and it is shaping up to be equally as popular as its Ashburton counterpart. Book via the website below, phone (03) 302 6064 or email info@lakehouselakehood. co.nz. Or if you’re more of the spontaneous type… just pop in. www.lakehouselakehood.co.nz

Making Canterbury sparkle

T

he 2017 vintage sparkling wine was created using entirely estate-grown grapes from West Melton. The classic French technique ‘méthode traditionnelle’ (traditional method) is a proven process for producing quality sparkling wine. While the fermentation in the bottle takes longer, good things come to those who wait! Melton Estate is also about making your event sparkle. Birthdays, engagements, weddings and even larger functions, are all great excuses to pour a glass at Melton Estate. Although, who said sparkling wine was only called for because of a big hoorah. Everyone enjoys bubbles and now you can enjoy a local méthode and indulge in an enjoyable few hours sipping away among the vines. You are warmly invited - even encouraged - to venture out to the winery and restaurant, and cellar door on Weedons Ross Road, West Melton. What better way to celebrate our expanding bubble than with some bubbles? Cheers to that.

It’s time to raise your glass because “Meltonia” méthode traditionnelle sparkling wine is here!

pleaser - classic steaks.” Of course, the new dishes do need to pass exacting tastetesting by Ravi, all the chefs, the hotel’s general manager, and the rest of the food and beverage staff (it’s a tough job!). As a little taster of what’s on offer... for a warm-up there’s a creamy prawn chowder or how about sweet and spicy baked pork belly... on to the main event with fish fillet baked in banana leaf with garden salad, Thai dressing, and lemon... or Chicken Pasanda, a beautiful almond-

based, creamy curry. “Team these delicious dishes with a South Island wine, and you’re in for a fantastic evening,” says Ravi. Fig restaurant at Quality Hotel Elms, 456 Papanui Rd, is complemented by its inviting bar, completing the atmosphere with a fireplace in the cooler months; you won’t be able to tear yourself away. Bringing the outdoors in WORDS LYNDA PAPESCH

Now that winter is mere days away, it is an ideal time to introduce the Norwegian philosophy of friluftsliv into your home. The philosophy of embracing the outdoors, friluftsliv (pronounced free-loofts-liv) is not just about being outside; it is also about bringing nature indoors to the lounge, bathroom and even the bedroom.

home PLANTS AND GREENERY Greening your interior is one way to achieve this. The world has such a rich and diverse range of plants, flowers, nature and wildlife that it is easy enough to create an indoor garden, even if it is just a few house plants. Group them together for effect or scatter them around the home.

FAIRY LIGHTS Add a few strings of fairy lights indoors and create your own green grotto. Stringing lights along balconies and up patio pillars can transform any area into a setting to be enjoyed day and night.

INDOOR GARDENS Hanging baskets, herb pots on windowsills and even purposebuilt kitchen gardens are all ways to go green. Anyone with a biophilic home design is more than halfway there!

RUSTIC ELEMENTS Adding rustic elements such as twig trees, seashells, rocks and driftwood are other ways to bring nature inside to be enjoyed.

W

hereas hygge is all about comfort, friluftsliv is about communing with nature in your own home, especially when it is too cold to go outdoors. Of course, there is nothing to stop you going outdoors either and experiencing the fullness of the philosophy. For those like me who like to stay cosy and dry with the occasional snowy sojourn, friluftsliv is perfect. At the heart of the philosophy is the belief that one should in some way, connect with nature every single day, no matter if it is raining sideways or snowing or bitterly cold.

BOUDOIR BALM Hanging baskets, herb pots on windowsills and even purposebuilt kitchen gardens are all ways to go green. Anyone with a biophilic home design is more than halfway there!

Your bedroom can easily transform to surround you with nature. Think about hanging a scenic painting – a landscape, a seascape or even a moonscape – -and look to a natural colour palette. Invite natural light in, add a few potted plants and think about mirror placement to reflect greenery.

Setting the bar high An intimate corner with an elegant bar cart and a cosy, layered blue setting makes for the perfect sophisticated spot. What is better than entertaining with a tipple from your own home bar? To make your space elegant and sophisticated, layer tonal blues and incorporate metallic accents.

T

he walls in this graceful nook are painted in the mid-toned hue of Resene Seachange, a soft Scandinavian blue with a touch of slate grey; an excellent example of how a mid-value wall colour can be rich and luxe when layered with lighter and darker tonal hues. Here Resene Seachange is paired with another lighter mid-blue, Resene Awash, on the curved wall feature, and a lighter blue with notes of lilac and grey, Resene Breathless, features on the floor.

Metallic accents add a sophisticated and elegant look to a space, such as here on the bar cart and again in the floating shelf accessories; remember, if you want to make it a feature, repeating it three times in a space will help do so. The bar cart itself has a distinct Art Deco vibe. The arch painted on the wall in Resene Awash gives a nod to this glamourous era and serves to simultaneously define the area as a place to relax and enjoy while linking the other curved elements in the room together.

Add rustic browns for calming warmth WORDS LYNDA PAPESCH

Tobacco brown is the perfect colour to incorporate into your home all year round. The natural essence of this colour will create a dark Scandi vibe during summer and bring the outdoors inside during autumn and winter. This colour can be calming yet will make a statement in any interior space. Here are some of Metropol’s tips for incorporating it into your interior design.

Accents Use soft browns to achieve a timeless, durable and functional furniture striking a marvellous balance with sophisticated colours and simple design.

Home office Your is a well-designed space that inspires creativity and helps to shut out distractions. The lounge chair is perfect for those moments of concentrated thinking while the discreet desk and the tactile walls bring a luxurious feel to the set.

Award-winning rooftop garden WORDS SUZANNE MCNAMARA PHOTOS MARK SCOWAN

A Christchurch rooftop garden that is small on size but big on innovation won gold at the Registered Master Landscaper awards recently. Natural Habitats installed the roof using an eco-pillow system. Weight is a natural concern when installing a green roof but the eco pillow system is lightweight, requiring no extra structural changes and has the added benefit of providing ideal growing conditions for plants.

T

he system utilised for both green walls and roofs uses recycled polystyrene that has been manipulated to mimic soil. Incredibly, the plants behave like they are planted in soil and are happy living in materials removed from our countries’ waste stream. The lightness of the polystyrene means green roofs are constructed off-site and then moved into place with established plants. Because the polystyrene is so light, the pillows of plants can be easily moved on to the roof of the building. The company’s South Island Regional Manager Ashley Shadbolt says, “Our cities need to be climate compatible and green roofs are fantastic because they can play a significant role in helping New Zealand reach its net carbon zero goals - we just need more of them.” Rooftop and wall gardens contribute to better air quality, reduce city noise and provide

a layer of insulation resulting in energy efficiencies. They can keep buildings cooler in summer and warmer in winter. They also mitigate stormwater runoff and provide a habitat for birds, bugs and bees. “We were delighted that the landscape architect and client

chose to use the eco pillow system, it being the first to be installed in the South Island. This project proved green roofs can fit in perfectly in the residential environment as well as commercial,” Shadbolt adds. Plants were carefully selected for the Christchurch climate,

and a low-maintenance easyto-manage irrigation system adds to the roof’s suitability for residential use. Natives and exotics make up a mix of 13 beautifully textured species of 115 specimens, including succulents, ground covers, shrubs and Mexican grass trees.

t is an extremely exciting time for us. We’re very motivated, stimulated and impelled by the current market,” says Kelvin Howell. The new home office set-up allows Kelvin and co-owner Jacqui McBride to make the most of their mornings, often taking the time to head out for a walk along the river before their busy day commences. “On any day we’ll be out organising the marketing of a campaign, arranging the dressing of a home for photo shoots, actual photo shoots and videos, attending viewings or open homes and then there’s the writing up of contracts and

negotiating,” Howell mentions. “While all this is happening, we’re fitting in property appraisals, meeting new clients and helping buyers and sellers post-contract. We have a full administration, marketing and IT team assisting and without them we really couldn’t put together the successful campaigns we have, but even then, we frequently aren’t back home until late in the evening. “Anything can, and does happen, and we never clock-off until loose ends have been tied up, and our people are happy.” And it is that drive that cements their business philosophy, that each individual

client should feel satisfied the right thing for them has been achieved with good, honest professional integrity. “We believe that first and foremost we are working with and for people, while using our knowledge and experience to guide, help and support them.” For MPRE Fendalton, it is not just about being real estate specialists. “Our point of difference is that our brand works very closely alongside Mike Pero Mortgages which can also assist with insurance, if needed. It’s a bit like a big family and we are just a small part of a large team. “In addition, when a listing or

a sale contract has been signed up, we work with our clients all the way through to settlement and possession, whether helping to organise and attend building or other technical inspections, assisting with or answering questions about finance, insurance, EQC, conducting final pre-purchase inspections and so on. This means that regular, prompt communication with all parties has to be a top priority, so we pride ourselves on our commitment to doing this, until the keys are handed over on settlement day.” Get in touch with the team using the details featured in the advertisement.

Restoration Men One of the most precious family traditions is that of handing down treasured pieces through the generations, and although the odd chip or scar is also part of its history, what a gift it is to receive that heirloom piece in near mint condition.

hird generation furniture makers and restorers D J Morrison Ltd understand this better than most, because Dave Morrison and son, Daniel, have had the honour of working on some incredibly beautiful wood pieces in their time – desks, chairs, staircases, bookcases, kitchen benches, bureaus, church pews and memorial plaques, dining room tables, bedroom suites, rocking chairs and rocking horses. In fact, name any wood category and D J Morrison will surely have restored it! When not bent to the task of lovingly restoring treasured heirlooms, father and son can be found working on commissions for new furniture, utilising native

and recycled native timbers, as well as imported timbers. Commissions for new pieces, whether one-offs or repeat projects, are as equally challenging and rewarding to Dave and Daniel as their restoration work. D J Morrison also undertakes retro-fitting double glazing on historic wooden framed windows, which, in a city blessed with a cornucopia of vintage and historic builds, is valuable information indeed. A fresh new look When Jackie Hamilton wanted a kitchen refresh, she knew the team to turn to. Our old friend ‘word-of mouth’ only ever has the one name on its lips, and that is Christchurch’s M F Turnbull.

D

esigned by an awardwinner, Jackie’s kitchen was still functional and beautiful, but after 16 years of loving use the cabinetry finish had become a little tired. “I spoke to Steve at Turnbull’s; he ran us through the options, and we decided on a double-coated lacquer paint finish,” says Jackie. “It brought the kitchen right into 2021 – I could even reuse the handles without any fear of dating the kitchen because the finish is so fresh and contemporary.” The process was easy: Turnbull’s team came to the house and removed the cupboard and drawer fronts, while Steve came to the house himself to touch up the small areas that weren’t removed to

the workshop. “We are really thrilled with it; just can’t believe our 16-year-old kitchen looks like it went in yesterday,” says Jackie. Next, Jackie turned to Steve and his team to refurbish her bedroom furniture. “We’d loved it for 40 years, but the time had come for a makeover,” says Jackie. The light faded finish was renewed with a treatment that revived the original colour of the wood and changed its look significantly. “We are so happy with the outcome, it has come up beautifully,” she says. M F Turnbull has been the go-to destination for surfacing in Christchurch for over 30 years now and has always been ahead of the curve with its

longstanding reuse, repair, and recycle ethos. Turnbull’s has an in-house saying: ‘if you think it could be spray-finished, give us a call because it probably can’. Making-over kitchens by resurfacing cabinetry is hugely popular. “People realise that they don’t need to do a full replacement, they can make a radical change, a shade adjustment, or simply freshen the existing colour. They save themselves money, and of course volume going to landfill,” says Monique Turnbull. Resurfacing old furniture is a favourite with the team. A client will bring in an unusual piece; it might have lovely proportions and be beautifully made, but the appearance no longer

suits. Refinished, the piece can anchor a new interior design scheme. Upholstered items with timber parts can be resurfaced and then the piece can be taken to your upholsterer for recovering. As well as falling in love with a resurfaced kitchen or furniture item, Turnbull’s makes the job so easy. “A great strength of the M F Turnbull team is its ability to communicate,” says Jackie, “they tell you exactly when they are coming - they are excellent that way - and if they get held up, they keep you in the loop for that too.” M F Turnbull is open from 7.30am to 4pm Monday to Friday. Visit them or phone (03) 365 2519 to discuss your refresh! www.mfturnbull.co.nz Metropol 13 May, 2021 63

Colder weather presents the perfect opportunity to start new landscaping projects, such as building raised vegetable beds and fences, edging paths with paving, setting up irrigation and redesigning the garden layout in preparation for spring planting – all the stuff that makes our gardens better.

PLANTING YUMMY CROPS

Winter Gardening Projects WORDS CHERYL COLLEY

As we move into winter and dig out the thermal socks, gardening might be the last thing on your mind. It may be chilly outside, but there is still plenty of work to be done in the garden during the winter months. No reason to hole-up indoors.

Get your winter vege garden going with peas, broad beans, spinach, carrots and sweet corn. Stay vigilant when it comes to weeds – they can grow surprisingly fast in winter.

TRANSPLANTING AND TIDYING Now is the time if you have perennials that you want to lift, divide or move. Cooler months are also the ideal time to move smaller deciduous trees such as Japanese maples. Don’t forget to deadhead your bulbs and annuals, removing all finished flowers and stems.

JUST ADD COLOUR Winter flowering plants such as camellia, pansies, and hellebores will provide plenty of colour and interest in the garden area close to outdoor spaces if you choose. Berryproducing plants are another option.

HEAT TREATMENT Any form of outdoor heating will extend your use of the garden for a month or two either side of summer. Go for one of the greatlooking portable gas heaters now on the market or try a chiminea, brazier or fire bowl.

len’s been in the profession for 20 years and word has gone around about how good he is. But he’s not into blowing his own trumpet, so he pointed Metropol in the direction of some happy clients to do that for him. “Glen is very easy to work with and he’s a great communicator,” says Mary-Ann Sidey. “He embraced our ideas and nothing was ever a problem.” “And he liked Mary-Ann’s scones,” pipes in Pete, Mary-Ann’s husband. The Sideys’ were impressed that Glen was on-site all the time and that he kept the place clean and tidy, which was important as they were still living there. Pictured here is their build in Fendalton, which was designed by Timothy Hogan of Intrados Architecture. One thing that Glen thinks is hugely important is the relationships he has with his sub-contractors. These have been established over the years and he trusts the tradespeople he works with. Exciting river-front living A second-to-none location on the banks of the Avon River is the location for an exciting new inner city townhouse development.

A

Street and Cook Construction Ltd project in conjunction with local developer Grant MacKinnon (DMG Group), the Riverbank Quarter is a unique

development of 17 terrace townhouses in Cambridge Terrace. The townhouses enjoy a wide Avon River frontage between Colombo and Manchester Streets in the CBD.

Project manager Brad Shotter of Street and Cook says the townhouses have proven so popular that they have all sold already. Construction is to the same high standard as the company’s previous high-rise builds in Christchurch, and the location is hard to beat.

“The location is second to none, enjoying wide Avon River frontage between Colombo and Manchester Streets in the CBD. To the west is the open green space of the PGC Memorial site, Otakaro Orchard, the Town Hall and the band rotunda,” he adds. “The recently opened Avon River Precinct runs past the front door, and Manchester Street passes to the east. They really are in an amazing location.”

Christchurch and The Joiner Shop of Kaikoura are representative of the high standards that customers are assured of when they use joiners who are masters of their trade and members of Registered Master Joiners. “Sydenham Joinery won the award in the Best Door or Window Category,” says Canterbury Branch President Nathan Busch. “And The Joiner Shop won Best Kitchen under 20,000 as well as the Best Canterbury Region Award. Our branch is immensely proud of these members. Their work and talent have definitely helped to raise the profile of the joinery craft in people’s minds and that is what we set out to do.” Members of the Registered Master Joiners Federation pride themselves on craftsmanship, integrity and client satisfaction. “We are specialists and leaders and innovators in the manufacture and supply of often technically challenging bespoke joinery. A new lease of life Under the management of Christchurch Accommodation, the recently re-opened West Fitzroy Apartments has undergone a full earthquake repair, including foundation restrengthening, a total re-build of the ground floor, and redesign and replacement of all kitchens and bathrooms in all 70 apartments, by the same company that designed the original kitchens 20 years before, Ingrid Geldof Design.

T

he brief given was to upgrade the apartments so that residents could enjoy a living space both aesthetically pleasing and highly functioning for a further 20 years. Such is the reputation of this award-winning design business, that Ingrid Geldof Design was also commissioned to design a new reception, lobbies, halls, and a gymnasium, as well as to provide input for the selecting of artworks, signage and exterior detailing of the building, which was achieved with the assistance of Room Interiors. The refurbishment of the

apartments was done on a tight budget, yet the team achieved outstanding results, providing a modernised building that is smart, easy to maintain, and all under budget. With such a leading design company’s name once more connected to the building, the value of West Fitzroy Apartments has risen significantly, a win-win for the owners in these post-quake times. A prominent site adjacent to the Memorial Avenue Gateway Bridge called for a memorable design, and the judges of the NZIA 2021 competition agreed that Sheppard and Rout exceeded that brief with its stunning FMG Office building project, selecting it as a finalist in the NZIA national competition.

he client required a building with a very strong relationship to its site – it needed to form a key component of the point of entry to Christchurch Airport. “The extruded building form is derived from its relationship to the adjacent motorway and Memorial Ave corridor,” explains Associate Director Matt Gutsell. “The folded façade and angled sunshade screen provide a sense of movement, and an effect of parallax as you transition from the off-ramp to slower pace of the airport precinct.” The building’s ground floor is set back to allow the form to hover above the ground plane and the undulating landscape forms below. “The building is part of a sequence of events and forms that relate to each other, evoke dynamism and movement, to enhance the experience of arrival,” says Matt. The effect is striking, a clear and vibrant marker of Christchurch’s international gateway. You can phone Sheppard and Rout on (03) 366 1562.

Honda Cars Christchurch has been part of the Christchurch inner city landscape for over three decades. Residing in the same place on the corner of Montreal and St Asaph Street, shifting only once across the road briefly after the 2011 earthquake, has been New Zealand’s biggest volume Honda dealer.

T

he showroom was given a 12-month overhaul by Calder Stewart Construction in conjunction with Lonsdale Architecture, and this year has received top honours at the 2020 New Zealand Commercial Project Awards. The Gold Award-winning showroom is very much a case of ‘the same, but different’. In other words, the layout is the same as it always has been, but that is where the similarities end. The aim of the project was to retain all the familiarity of the old showroom but with added modern design touches and compliance with the latest earthquake standards, rather than simply demolishing the existing showroom and starting from scratch. This also meant the team of sales staff, mechanics, parts and technicians could still feel at home as before. As the dealership faces north, it was logical to let as much light in as possible. The large glass windows allow for this,

leaving Civics, HRVs and Type Rs basking in the glow of the day. From the outside, the first thing you notice is the outer façade stretching from end-to-end on the top half of the showroom. From a distance, it reflects a modern and forward-thinking facility. However, look closer and you notice it is full of Honda heritage. Each waving panel is made up entirely of retro-inspired emblems. Inside, customers have access to the café and waiting area; the perfect place to unwind while your Jazz or Civic Type R is getting the works in the servicing department. Talking of service, the company still retains the highest level of customer service satisfaction. With plenty of parking on site and a modern and inviting award-winning showroom built to the highest possible standards. this business is here to stay.

THIS IS

NO OLD GO Prior to Subaru New Zealand’s marketing campaign for the new Outback, I am ashamed to admit I hadn’t realised what the acronym GOAT meant. It does of course mean, ‘Greatest of All Time.’ With the new Outback, Subaru claims it is the GOOAT. So, is this the ‘Greatest Outback of All Time’? Let’s see.

he new Outback gets a few styling tweaks front and rear. This is probably the best looking Outback for some time. Under the bonnet is a 2.5L boxer four-cylinder petrol engine like before, but this one is 90 percent all new. Power has risen to 138kW and 245Nm of torque. The SLT gearbox gains a gear, making it now an eightspeed set up. Subaru also claims a combined fuel figure of 7.3L/100km, and towing capacity increases to two tonnes. Standard kit is generous with Subaru’s fourth generation EyeSight safety system combining lane centring function, speed sign recognition and lane departure warning. There are also directional LED headlights, rear cross traffic alerts, blind spot monitoring, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and reverse automatic braking. While the interior itself is very similar to before, the first thing you notice when inside is the large tablet-style 11.6 touchscreen infotainment system. This is by far the highlight of the new Outback’s cockpit, as it was very clear and intuitive. My test car was the flagship Outback Touring which boasts niceties such as heated Napa leather, electric sunroof, heated steering wheel, and a rather good Harman Kardon sound system which gives one the closest experience

to hearing Pink Floyd live. The driving position is more natural this time around and the level of quality materials used for the switchgear and trim is much improved too. This is easily the most refined Outback yet. On the road, that refinement translates well into the drive itself. Honestly, the new Outback feels a completely different animal to the previous generation. The nearly all new boxer four-pot is quieter and peak torque comes in low down in the rev range, leaving you seldom exceeding 2500rpm. Tweaks to the suspension and dampers have resulted in less body roll. Ride comfort has been improved too. Heading on to the gravel trails and dusty inclines behind McLeans Island, it was time to play with X-Mode. Subaru’s off-road modes deal with all manner of terrain well, with X-Mode sending power and torque to where it is needed most. You also gain the addition of deep snow/mud settings to the mix. The entry level Outback kicks things off at $49,990, the mid-range Outback X is $54,990, and my flagship Touring tops out the range at $57,990. In summary, the new Outback exceeds all expectations. Honestly, I was not expecting to like it as much as I did. The GOOAT? Absolutely.

t this time, laser cut transponder keys and keyless entry into vehicles were just starting to take off, but so many cars were yet to fully embrace this technology. The M8 stood out as the best performer, but it was the new M3 and M4 Competition models which took my eye and my drive experience.

he slalom (taking road cones as fast as you can) was an agility test and I had a great time in the convertible Z4. Highly responsive and fun with the roof down, it handled well. Next was the off-road in the X7 M50i. The all-terrain fourwheel drive featuring X-drive made this all too easy, although incline descent using the automatic decent feature and speed control plus the camera system had me doing things I wouldn’t try at home. Seeing just how much untapped potential there is in a beast like that was great. The racetrack element was – of course – what we were all most looking forward to. International BMW drive instructor, Mike Eady and his team kept us safe. The car range included the M5 Competition sedan, a V8 petrol capable of 0 to 100 in 3.3 seconds, with 750 in torque and 430 kW of evil at $234,300. The M8 Competition coupe has similar specifications but a price point of $342,900 The shape on this is just hotness and the performance and holding were something else. I was driving all models in a tweaked sport mode, giving me softened steering but acceleration and breaking at top performance. The M8 stood out as the best performer, but it was the new M3 and M4 Competition models which took my eye and my drive experience. The M xDrive system and Active M differential – complete with M – specific traction control, link up with the dynamic stability control (DSC) system to ensure precisely judged interaction for the driving situation in hand. The M4 is certainly quick off the mark, and a touch bouncy at speed. Insert big smirk on my face here. The new larger “kidney” grills and flared rear wheel arches have prompted mixed reaction. But, change is good and I think it is

going to grow on everyone. Coming in at $168,990 for the M3 and $172,990 for the M4, the models sell in a range of colours named after the world’s racetracks. I love the M4 in Sao Paulo yellow and the M3 in Isle of Man green. It just pops. With 260 participants taking part in the week-long event, it was great to be a part of a well-organised motoring occasion. Ben took out the premium award, scoring a wonderful BMW race helmet, but I was the bad boy who drove too fast and hit to many road cones in the slalom. Next year Ben, next year!
