CELLOVOCI

QUEER MUSIC TO OUR EARS

SEPARATELY, THEY ARE CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED ARTISTS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT. TOGETHER, THEY FORM CELLOVOCI, MUSIC’S LATEST POWERHOUSE HITTING THE SCENE HARD. Two parts voice, one part cello, add in some piano, Branden and James and Effie Passero mix classic and modern-day pop with style and sensuality that instantly sets them apart. In their early formation, they have already toured internationally, enjoyed a sold-out performance at Carnegie Hall, and released multiple albums. With their individual credits, it is not surprising this merge of talents is flying out of the gate. Married couple Branden and James have been together for almost a decade. Singer Branden was a finalist on America’s Got Talent and cellist James has been featured with Olivia Newton-John, Bernadette Peters, and Idina Menzel, just to name a few. Singer-songwriter Effie Passero was a semifinalist on American Idol and enjoyed multiple tours with Postmodern Jukebox, racking up millions of views on the group’s YouTube videos. Every one of CelloVoci’s songs is a journey. They often mashup music you never knew could go together, for example, “Bésame Mucho” and “Hotel California,” or “Chasing Cars” and “The Rose.” If you’ve seen them perform live, you know that in one moment the pathos of their music will bring you to tears, and in the next, they will have you tapping your feet. At the end of their concert, you are emotionally exhausted after the beautiful journey they have taken you on. They met by chance while waiting out Covid in Puerto Vallarta. They agreed to take part in a fundraiser for the staff of a local theater and instantly sparked chemistry with each other. They joined forces and performed together for a number of livestreams during the pandemic. Effie’s ability to sing everything from opera to rock to musical theatre to pop attracted Branden and James, who often incorporate those same elements in their work. Effie was taken with the couple’s personality and musical ability. The fact that the friendship just automatically added to the mix made it impossible for them not to make music together. The creative process has been a journey for them, challenging and complimenting each other to make the most of their skills. Touring, recording, and performing together, they have learned a lot from each other.

Effie: I learn from Branden and James every time we travel, each conversation, and especially each performance. The nuance they have, and the way they carry themselves not only as musicians but as people is very impressionable and inspirational. No matter the circumstances they rise together. So, I’ve learned so much about what it means to be a team player, and how collaboration can be such a beautiful thing. I’m so used to protecting my craft and keeping it so close to my heart, but Branden and James have shown me beauty in opening up to others and creating together.

Branden & James: Effie has this superpower to make herself so vulnerable onstage when you least expect it. You can hear it in her lyrics, the way she phrases vocal lines, and the utter pain and heartbreak that can show up in her vocal versatility. In life, Effie never really takes anything too seriously. Her personal code is that you can be nice to others, no matter how talented you are. We see this tremendous respect Effie has for humanity in her every day.

As queer artists, they are able to bring that texture and sensibility to their work. There is a sensitivity to and awareness of emotions and creativity that is heightened. Their audience and fan reach is far beyond the LGBTQ community. Their group, and as individuals, are not hindered by labels. Perhaps this is the formula we need to build bridges between the queer and conservative sides. They don’t feel the need to add pomp and circumstance to their queer identity, they let the

Our core audience is mainstream, heterosexual baby boomers, which is the bulk demographic of the classical-crossover genre. Because we often play shows for this demographic in rather socially conservative areas, we’ve become accustomed to not sharing about our sexuality. At first, we felt that this was somehow hiding a part of who we are. We aren’t ashamed of our queerness at all, we are very open and public about it on social media. But, if our show doesn’t have a particular queer billing, we don’t think it’s always necessary to talk about our sexuality.

Their shows are hitting no matter where they go. In their opinion, what is it that audiences respond to the most?

When people come to classical crossover recitals/concerts, they are not expecting such free-flowing spirits on stage. The three of us together are so sibling-like and silly, it is apparent within the first five minutes just how much we love each other. Not only do people respond highly to our music, but they speak so highly of our love for each other and how rare that is to see on stage these days. Our genuine love and respect that we showcase for each other on stage is something people carry home with them. We would love to say we are inspiring others to act the same. Audiences also really love how we take a piece they grew up with and put a fresh spin on it. We are not dissecting a classic and making it “wrong”, but breathing new life into

a song maybe your mother sang to you growing up and bringing those memories back in full force. Audiences really appreciate that the most.

Their debut album, Happy Days along with their first Christmas Album A Christmas Gift are stunning, capturing the emotion, the storytelling, and the musical prowess of their live shows. Keep the Kleenex box handy, it will move you to emotion. In a world of noise, electronic beats, and autotune, this is a fierce reminder of the power of actual music. Their mashup of “You Are My Sunshine” with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” melted our hearts. What were some of the group’s biggest challenges in bringing the show to an album?

The recording studio is like a vacuum - void of any energy exchange with an audience. The microphones aren’t forgiving at all, and every weakness is picked up and amplified. It can be a frustrating and disheartening process. But, unlike with live performance, it is possiblewith a lot of patience and perseverance - to listen and refine things until they are just right.

The love and affection between Branden and James is palpable. But even the best couple can be put to the test when creating music, traveling, and performing, while having to take care of all the other parts of being married. How do they maintain a healthy relationship while in such a creative working partnership?

Branden: James and I are very lucky. We are the dearest of friends. I always say that if we weren’t together, we’d probably be best mates who would still spend endless amounts of time

music speak for itself.

together. I have a very strict rule in our relationship: we never go to bed with an unresolved argument. We are adults, and there is nothing we can’t resolve with some mature conversation. I maintain the same rules in our working relationship. If we ever have an artistic disagreement, we always resolve it before we go on stage. Audiences are much more perceptive than some give them credit for. If our energy is off, the audience knows. I never want to show that side of us to an audience that negates our mission of bringing people together and healing them with our music. This rule of resolution has served us very well over the past 10 years relationally, and nine years musically. We feel very blessed because we understand some groups have irreconcilable differences that ultimately lead to parting ways. If we stick to our formula, there will always be peace in our union, I think.

With all the performances under their belt, all of the places they’ve visited, and all the audiences they’ve learned from, how has their music changed the most from their early years?

James: It’s funny actually, because we still perform a lot of arrangements we made in our first years together. The likes of “Hotel California,” “Hallelujah,” and our medley of music from The Phantom of the Opera, have become fan favorites that we can’t seem to stop playing. In saying that, I think we’ve certainly developed as performers - maturing in our delivery and deepening our musical instincts with one another because we spend so much time together. I think what’s helped us to last as a couple is the fact that we are great friends who genuinely enjoy spending time with one another, and we’re committed to doing the hard work of maintaining a long-term personal and working relationship.

A lot of the couple’s music deals with love – the difficulties, the happiness, the heartbreak. How does being a couple shade those songs?

It makes it real. When you’re living the things that you’re singing about/expressing through music, it makes it much more honest and vulnerable because you’re able to relate to what you’re performing. A lot of people comment on how much they love our connection on stage - it’s a comment we often get from people who have just seen us for the first time. I don’t think it is possible to fake that. People notice it because it’s real, and we tap into it (both consciously and subconsciously) when we’re on stage.

Effie is a complete chameleon. With punk rock hair, tattoos, and bold fashion, she challenges

norms as she launches into a sweet soprano singing the hell out of opera. She can also rock it out, she can also transform songs like “Creep” into a heartbreaking ballad. Give her jazz or musical theatre? She’s got it. Watching her transform on stage is watching a master artist. She’s also very down to earth and remains humble. Her career and her life have had many iterations, with milestones like American Idol and Postmodern Jukebox just pin posts amid her journey.

I’ve been singing since I was five. I’m incredibly lucky to say that with everything my little heart desired, my mom was there to make it happen. So, from musical theatre to opera, to songwriting- the evolution into American Idol and Postmodern Jukebox is a result of having a supportive parent. Obviously, there was a lot of demanding work and tears, and not everything was supportive all the time, but I am the person I am today because of all the different versions of me I got to meet. Each stage taught me resilience, and how to appreciate criticism instead of taking it so personally. Especially through American Idol and Postmodern Jukebox, I learned how to become a frontwoman and not depend so much on my piano. My piano was always such a crutch for me! I was scared to be up front and center, and it definitely wasn’t natural for me when I first started. With the help of all my other musician friends, I became more confident in my capabilities and now really love being a lead singer! There is still so much more to learn and I’m excited to see what comes next.

Touring with Postmodern Jukebox globally not only showed her a different side of the world but also made her a viral video hit. From their filmed music videos to audience video captures of her performances, the views started racking up.

Postmodern Jukebox has been not just lifechanging, but lifesaving. Like so many of us during the pandemic, I was very unsure of the future of music and live performance. So, when I got that initial email to see if I was interested in joining their post-pandemic tour, of course, I cried and was so elated. I swore to never take another performance for granted ever again, regardless of the size of the audience. There are too many on-stage memories to share, but there was one recently that was very moving to me. I performed “Hallelujah” to an audience in Finland, and by the end, most everyone was standing and waving their hands in the air. Part of me always finds it funny because it is *not* the religious song so many people think it to be, but this particular night it seemed like that song weighed heavily on many people’s hearts.

JAMES AND I ARE VERY LUCKY. WE ARE THE DEAREST OF FRIENDS. I ALWAYS SAY THAT IF WE WEREN’T TOGETHER, WE’D PROBABLY BE BEST MATES WHO WOULD STILL SPEND ENDLESS AMOUNTS OF TIME TOGETHER.”

They were crying and shouting and made me feel like we were in some kind of revival. It was wild.

Her success has come at the cost of having to overcome life’s challenges. If you follow her on social media, you know she doesn’t hide behind smoke and mirrors. Emotional highs and lows, career lulls, heartbreak, and a tough childhood are just a part of who she is as her successes. Sharing this with her fans is not to create content, it is to tell her real story.

Like a lot of people, I didn’t have the most amazing childhood. I had my brothers, and we were each other’s rocks, but sharing feelings wasn’t really a thing until I was much older. Music became my way to share how I was feeling, and as I got older my songs became more relatable to other people. As I understood the responsibility we hold as artists to share our gifts, it also became apparent to me that not only do people want to celebrate our successes, but they appreciate and find comfort in our struggles. No one is alone, no matter how much it might feel to someone at that moment. So, a certain song, or a certain poem, no matter how Shakespearean or simple in its message- might save a life. Vulnerability is a strength, and being authentic is something more people should strive to be. So if I can inspire others to be that way, I will be proud of that.

With everything that she has accomplished and been through at an early age, and with a world of possibilities ahead of her, what is she most proud of looking back on?

Looking back on my life, I can say I am proud of many things. My musical accomplishments always surprise me when I look back on them. You forget so much of what you do! Next year I am singing at the Sydney Opera House. If someone had mentioned that to little 13-year-old Effie, I would have laughed, but now it’s a reality. I am so proud of how far I have come, from that little weird black sheep in the middle of nowhere Californian agriculture town. But now, I am most proud to say that I am continuously striving to be better. As a woman, as a friend, as a musician. I’m at the age where I would love to be remembered for my music, but I’d love most to be remembered as a good person. ■

JONATHAN BENNETT

REPRESENTATION AND ROMANCE RING IN 2026

DECEMBER BRINGS COZY SWEATERS, KITSCHY STYLES, AND CAMARADERIE BY THE MILE. We exchange heartfelt gifts with our loved ones and ironic gifts with our quirky friends, wrapping them all in a kingdom of ribbons, bows, and panache aplenty.

And every kingdom needs its ruler. Cue Jonathan Bennett.

“The Gay King of Christmas!” Bennett gleefully announces his next-level nickname to kick off our conversation.

“Christmas is a really wonderful, magical time for many people,” beams the star of mega hits like Mean Girls, Halloween Wars and The Groomsmen trilogy. But Bennett balances his eternal optimism with a healthy dash of empathy. “I also think it’s a really hard time for many people. And so, in telling queer love stories to a mainstream audience, I realize that part of my job is to give everyone, but especially queer people, something that they can look forward to and something where they can feel like Christmas is for them as well.”

That merry mix of humor, heart, and the human condition form the foundation of Bennett’s most recent telemovie triumph.

“Keller Christmas Vacation is actually loosely

based on my own life. My dad used to take us on a houseboat trip every year with me and my siblings, who didn’t get along. And the reason he would do that is he said, ‘You guys have to talk to each other cause you’re on a boat and there’s nowhere to go.’

Bennett transformed his IRL ick into inspiration, Hallmark Channel style.

“He called it ‘forced family fun’ and over the years of doing that, it actually helped us grow closer. So, I thought, what a fun idea for a Christmas movie. What if we put a dysfunctional family, where the siblings are at odds, and we dropped them on a Christmas market river cruise in the middle of Europe? Because when you take this gorgeous background of all the Christmas markets and the Vienna Cathedral, and you add a family that’s arguing, it’ll be a movie that so many people relate to… Most families have dysfunction in them, so over the holidays, having a family that everyone can relate to and say, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s my brother, or that’s my sister,’ I thought was so funny.”

When it came time to fill the roles of his Keller siblings, Bennett pulled off a SUPER casting coup.

“I’ve known Brandon Routh since we were on soap operas in New York City together,” Bennett recounts. “Everyone mistook us for each other. They thought I was him and he was me. When I booked Mean Girls, everyone kept asking him if he was Aaron Samuels and when he got Superman, everyone asked if I was Superman. So jokingly, we said we have to play brothers in a movie someday. When I created Keller Christmas Vacation with Tracy Andreen, I knew right then and there that Brandon was the guy to play my brother.”

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s holiday gold!

Hallmark movies fall into two distinct categories: BGK or AGK - Before Gay Kiss or After Gay Kiss. One momentous same sex lip-lock puckered its way into history when Bennett and his on-screen hubby snuck a seasonal smooch in the Hallmark original film The Christmas House It was a seismic smackeroo, changing the fabulous face of the brand for (gay) good.

“I knew from that first kiss I did back in 2020 that my mission now is to tell queer love stories and formulate them for a mainstream audience so that way we can change hearts and minds. It’s such a responsibility that I don’t take lightly and it’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done.”

But Christmas isn’t the only holiday that Bennett sprinkles with his signature star power.

“This will be my 10th year as the official host of Times Square New Year’s Eve and it’s the best job in the world. I get to stand center stage in the middle of Times Square for six hours and ring in the New Year, which is such a wonderful time because a lot of people need new beginnings or need closure from the past year. So even though New Year’s Eve is a party, it’s really an emotional experience for some people. So, to get to stand there and lead the party for six hours, it’s just magic is what it is.”

Abraca-awesome! Bennett has a blast weaving wonder from year to year, and he’s often joined by his soulful soulmate Jaymes Vaughan (this month’s GED Magazine cover artist).

“Times Square Alliance, who puts on New Year’s Eve, they’re such advocates for equality and inclusion. They’ve actually had my husband come up and host a bunch of segments with me. We actually are the first gay couple to ever host New Year’s Eve. I mean sure, Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen hosted, but we’re the first gay *couple* to ever be seen on camera hosting the biggest party in the world where all the eyes are watching and that’s a huge deal.”

Huge is an understatement … by a factor of a billion.

“We are the official live stream from Times Square,” Bennett announces. “It’s seen by almost a billion people that night. That’s a lot of eyes! And so, to go up there and have a relationship on New Year’s Eve just like every other straight couple is really powerful.”

Representation, romance, and real change - these are the values that Jonathan Bennett is bringing into 2026. Exhibit A: his recent trip aboard the Norwegian Joy spawned a docuseries entitled Christmas at Sea, which follows fortunate fans and their favorite talent on a holiday themed voyage to the Caribbean.

“The Hallmark Christmas Cruise is a really amazing experience,” Bennett exclaims. “Hallmark fans are the best fans in the world. We got to go on a cruise ship with 6,000 fans, 18 of the Hallmark stars, and have a giant Christmas party at sea for five days.”

The heartthrob surfs a tide of smiles as he continues, “We get to interact with the fans here, listen to what they have to say about our movies and hear what Hallmark Channel

means to them, and you get to meet them and give back to them and take pictures with them and you know to support them the way they support us.”

As bright as Bennett’s future is, he has a delightfully Zen way of focusing on the queerand-now. The dreamiest of dreamers, he recently fulfilled a life goal when he starred on the Broadway stage in Monty Python’s Spamalot. His Sir Robin is a whirlwind of sight gags and scaredycatlike reactions. Drawing rave reviews from Manhattan crowds and ensemble castmates alike, Bennett is the embodiment of enthusiasm. Even in the course of our interview, he bounces

from topic to topic with unbridled zeal for every exchange.

“Are we gonna talk about Finding Mr. Christmas?”

Bennett discusses his hit reality show like a kid on the morning of December 25th, eager to show off his favorite gift.

“Watch the show, dammit! It’s so good.”

You heard the man: tune in and fan out!

“Finding Mr. Christmas is the Hallmark Channel’s search for the next Christmas movie star,” narrates Bennett. “What we’re looking for in the next Christmas movie star is the five qualities you need to be a Hallmark leading man which

are: you have to be charming. You have to be funny. You have to have a sense of humor. You have to be kind, and you have to have a whole lotta heart and of course you’ve gotta look good in and out of a Christmas sweater, because that’s part of the job.”

Sexiness is all in a day’s work. And that work gives Bennett endless joy as a creator, producer and host of Finding Mr. Christmas

“This season, we put the guys through different acting challenges based on the tropes of all of the Hallmark movies. So, we gamify the meet/cute, we gamify the first date, we gamify the kiss at the end of the movie. All the tropes that we’ve come to know and love from Hallmark movies, we actually make each of those a challenge for the guys.”

Challenge accepted! So, what are some of the star’s standout moments from the series?

“One of my favorite challenges is the meet/cute where we put the guys on snow skis and they had to do a scene with Hallmark legend Janel Parrish while they were skiing downhill, they had 10 minutes to learn their lines, and then they had to perform the scene skiing downhill and saying their lines and they had one take to get it right. That’s one of my favorite challenges. Another one of my favorite challenges is with Ali Sweeney, who’s another Hallmark legend. The guys had to go on horseback and perform their scene while riding horses on a first date and that was absolutely brilliant and hilarious to watch because half the guys had never ridden horses before ... and you can tell. That gives us some great reality TV.”

If you want to be America’s next sweetheart, sourpusses need not apply.

“Anyone with a bad attitude is a dealbreaker usually,” assesses Bennett. “They have to be on set with a crew and cast and get along with everyone and have an upbeat, fun attitude and be grateful to be working. I think that’s what every Hallmark star does.”

It’s more than a job; it’s a festive philosophy.

“What’s so great about Finding Mr. Christmas is, sure it’s a reality competition, but really it’s a show about bonding and brotherhood.”

Brimming with pride, Bennet declares, “Our 10 guys come into the show as competitors, but they leave as brothers because it’s not your average reality show where there’s fighting and drink throwing. Ours is pure Hallmark Channel, so it’s completely the opposite. It’s these guys coming in and actually supporting each other, being vulnerable, and helping

each other through the competition. By doing that, they’re showing the traits of a Hallmark leading man, but they’re also becoming better themselves because when you help others succeed you end up shining and that’s what this show’s about.”

Bennett’s projects draw you in until you feel like you’re part of his orbit, his inner circle, and his electrifying presence. The audience loves him, but they also fuel his passion for the next yuletide hit.

“The best way that you can support us is to just watch Finding Mr. Christmas and to watch Keller Christmas Vacation.”

Breaking the fourth wall, Bennett speaks directly to you, so get ready to swoon. “By watching, you’re supporting us and I think it’s really magical when the community comes

together and supports each other.”

Caring courses through Bennett’s veins. He is a GLAAD award winner, a Human Rights Campaign honoree, and the recent recipient of a coveted spot on the Palm Springs Walk of the Stars. Theater, philanthropy, laughter, and longevity - achievement is Jonathan Bennett’s love language, and it’s sharper than Cupid’s arrow.

He does it all with ease, he does it all effortlessly, and he does it all for the next up and coming gay artist whose biggest holiday wish is acceptance.

“I make TV shows and movies where the queerness is celebrated and embraced because, for a lot of queer people, Christmas can be a little tough. It’s the time when people go home to their families and sometimes their families aren’t as welcoming as others. So, it can be a

BY WATCHING, YOU’RE SUPPORTING US AND I THINK IT’S REALLY MAGICAL WHEN THE COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER AND SUPPORTS EACH OTHER.”

really crunchy time. I thought if I can just make some movies and shows that queer people can watch during the holidays and feel seen and feel loved and maybe laugh a little bit, then that’s my mission.”

Whether you’re stuck on a holiday houseboat or feeling adrift in a sea of intolerance, Jonathan Bennett issues a royal reminder: your orientation is a gift. You belong to the big, boisterous, and bitchingly brash kingdom of queer belonging. All hail the Gay King of Christmas! ■

THE

SYNONYMOUS STYLE AND FASHION OF

MILAN AND ARMANI

OVER THE COURSE OF A FIFTY-YEAR CAREER, GIORGIO ARMANI’S SLEEK DESIGN SENSIBILITY HAS EMBODIED THE RISE OF ITALY’S FASHION AND ECONOMIC CAPITAL. Most of us can still recall when we first encountered Armani style, the signature drape of his clothing, the louchely elegant jackets, the color he defined as “greige.”

For me, it was the opening night of American Gigolo, a sold-out screening in San Francisco. There had been rumors for weeks about Richard Gere’s nude scene but the 1980 film became far more revolutionary for its impact on men’s fashion. It was a film that propelled both Armani and Gere into the stratosphere where Armani remained throughout his career.

It’s easy to imagine Armani on Milan’s grand Piazza del Duomo where the city’s 14th-century cathedral, constructed entirely of marble, flanked by Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Italy’s oldest and most opulent shopping arcade. And you can easily imagine Armani strolling across the piazza toward Teatro alla Scala, Milan’s 18th-century opera house. It was Armani’s genius to fuse Milan’s three most notable landmarks into an Italian business model that manifested the intersection of the ecclesiastical, the mercantile, and the dramatic.

That sense of drama is immediately apparent upon entry at Armani Hotel Milano where guests are greeted at reception seven floors above the city. It was Armani’s objective to create an entrance that rose above the quotidian and lifted guests into the ethereal. Armani spent a lifetime creating red carpet entrances, and guests who enter Armani Hotel Milano are guaranteed their catwalk across the hotel’s polished marble floors.

Armani Hotel Milano is the second of Armani’s hotels, the first opened in 2010 in Dubai in the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. For his hotel in Milan, Armani chose a classic 1937 building designed by the Italian Rationalist architect Enrico A. Griffini. Armani designed a dramatic two-story glass addition that rises atop the building like a panoramic conservatory. Throughout the day, the play of sunlight and shadows create a cinematic chiaroscuro setting for guests while the unobstructed views offer a bird’s-eye perspective on the city skyline. One of the many marvels of this glass structure is evident only from an aerial view which reveals Armani’s signature A.

Centrally located in the heart of Quadrilatero della Moda, Milan’s fashion district, Armani Hotel Milano welcomes guests with a personalized host and concierge known as a Lifestyle Manager who arranges customized spa treatments, personal trainers, dinner reservations, and tickets to special events. After an

overnight flight from the States, the choice was breakfast or a treatment at Armani/Spa. I chose both. Located on the hotel’s top floor, Armani/ Spa overlooks the city with a relaxation pool and personalized treatments from professional massage therapists. At breakfast, I filled my plate with buffalo mozzarella which I slathered on Italian breads, followed by Italian dolci. Restraint is not an option when eating in Milan.

Armani loved Milan’s Brera neighborhood for its bohemian charms and vibrant street life. Imagine an amalgam of Paris’ Montmartre and London’s Bloomsbury, buzzing with a variety of caffès and boutiques, galleries and ristorantes. Armani Hotel Milano is a short stroll away from Pinacoteca di Brera where 120 of Armani’s creations are displayed amidst the museum’s collection of Italian paintings that span the 13th to the 20th century.

For the first time since Pinacoteca’s opening in 1809, painting and fashion are juxtaposed to highlight fashion’s role in shaping cultural and

aesthetic narratives. As you wander through the galleries, it becomes increasingly apparent how Armani drew upon the history of Italian fashion for his own creations. The exhibition features numerous dresses and suits worn by Armani’s many celebrity ambassadors. True fashion aficionados will be inclined to play Name That Star before reading the placards that detail the backstory behind the garments. And yes, Richard Gere’s gigolo sport coat is included.

For a 21st-century viewpoint on Milan, Porta Nuova is Milan’s high-tech center, home to Italy’s highest skyscraper and some of Milan’s most exclusive residential towers. What was previously a neighborhood of industrial wastelands and obsolete railroads was transformed in the late 1990s into a $2.5 billion mixed-used district of star-chitecture. The widely acclaimed Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest) is a two-tower residential and office complex, notable for its vertical façade planted with 5,000 shrubs and more than 800 trees. On the short walk back to Armani

Hotel Milano, visitors pass through Corso Como, a neighborhood widely celebrated for its nightlife and entertainment options.

At the base of the block-long Armani Hotel Milano, Emporio Armani beckons like a siren with its own ristorante and Caffè Milan. On the opposite corner of the building, there’s a NOBU restaurant with an underground private members club. In addition to the hotel’s 95 rooms and suites, Armani Hotel Milano features an in-house florist known as Armani/ Fiori as well as a well-curated bookstore, all of which are elegant exemplars of Armani’s clean minimalism.

The hotel’s expansive junior suites are sleek urban spaces which include a circular vestibule with its own curvilinear pocket door. There’s also a separate living room with Juliet balcony, a king-sized bedroom with adjoining walk-in closet, and a spa bathroom. Rooms are furnished in Armani’s signature “greige” with polished surfaces, lustrous textiles, and iPad room controls for lighting, windows, draperies, in-room dining, and concierge. The marble bathrooms are large enough for yoga practice while the soaking tub and rainforest shower could easily host a thruple.

gather at Armani/Bamboo Bar where Armani’s signature A floats atop the ice in the house’s white Negroni. At Armani/Ristorante, twilight glistens across an onyx checkered floor that recalls the films of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. There’s elegance in the air as the city lights sparkle.

As for the food, as Executive Chef Francesco Mascheroni states, “I cook what I like to eat: traditional recipes…inspired by international cuisine but drawing on Italy’s gastronomic heritage.” A perfect example is the chef’s tajarin pasta dish, a tangle of noodles rich with egg yolks and sea urchin and nori seaweed. For dessert, it was tiramisu with mascarpone ganache, whipped white chocolate, and meringue. After such delicious decadence, a plate of Italian confections and friandises seems almost unnecessary, but, like me, you’ll probably eat them all anyway.

In keeping with its high levels of service and hospitality, Armani Hotel Milano is a Legend member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts. For those guests seeking a legendary experience in Milan, Armani Hotel Milano and Preferred Hotels & Resorts have created Tailored by Armani: A Dream in Design which offers frontrow access to an Armani fashion show along

with a private fitting at the Armani atelier, as well as a three-night stay for two guests in the Presidential Suite at Armani Hotel Milano. The exclusive experience includes spa treatments, signature cocktails, and an in-suite dinner for two created by chef Mascheroni. It’s the sort of once-in-a-lifetime gift designed for that extra nice and naughty person in your life.

As I wandered through Quadrilatero della Moda on my last night in Milan, I marveled at how the city has evolved since my first visit as a university student. Back then, Armani was just getting started and now his touch is evident throughout the city. His life serves as a reminder for all of us to follow our dreams. ■

THE HISTORY OF WINE IS OFTEN NARRATED THROUGH GENERATIONAL DYNASTIES, STOIC FAMILY NAMES, AND LONG-HELD, FREQUENTLY RIGID, TRADITIONS. It’s a world that, until recently, rarely celebrated—or even acknowledged—diversity. Yet, beneath the surface of the world’s most celebrated regions, a quiet but profound revolution has been brewing. Today, a wave of dynamic, openly LGBTQ+ winemakers and winery owners are not just claiming their space in the cellar; they are redefining quality, challenging conventional wisdom, and crafting some of the most exciting and authentic wines on the planet.

This is more than a list of allies; this is a celebration of makers whose identities inform, but do not overshadow, the exceptional character of their work. From the sun-drenched valleys of California to the rugged hills of Piedmont, Italy, these producers are proving that when you bring your whole self to the craft, the resulting wine is all the better for it. Grab a glass—preferably one made by the producers mentioned here—and let’s embark on a global tour of vinous excellence rooted in identity and pride.

County. A crisp, lively sparkling with juicy pear and apple flavors, balanced by a hint of buttery brioche and a zing of citrus zest. Smooth, refreshing, and effortlessly elegant.

AUTHENTICITY ON THE WEST COAST

The American West Coast, particularly California and Oregon, has long been a hotbed for independent thought and winemaking innovation. It’s no surprise that it hosts some of the most visible and activist LGBTQ+ wine figures.

In Sonoma County, wine isn’t just a beverage; it’s a vehicle for social change. For Equality Vines, there is justice in every glass. Founded by Jim Obergefell (the lead plaintiff in the landmark Supreme Court case legalizing same-sex marriage) and Matt Grove, Equality Vines is perhaps the most outwardly mission-driven winery portfolio in the world. Their entire ethos is built around promoting equality, with a portion of proceeds supporting organizations championing LGBTQ+ rights. They source grapes from top vineyards across California, allowing their label to be more flexible and focused on message and quality than a single estate.

• Featured Wine: The “Love Wins” Sparkling Blanc de Blancs is a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc from two acclaimed vineyards in Western Sonoma

Husbands Joe Wolosz and Jeff Durham started Gentleman Farmer Wines in 1999, scaling a micro-operation born in a garage into a highly respected small-production label known for high-end Bordeaux blends. Their focus is on creating wines that are generous, elegant, and timeless, mirroring their own sophisticated hospitality roots. They actively donate proceeds to LGBTQIA+ supporting organizations, including Queer LifeSpace and the It Gets Better Project.

• Featured Wine: Their flagship Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is crafted with finesse, showcasing dark fruit, structure, and aging potential, firmly placing them in the premium Napa category while maintaining an independent, artisanal spirit.

• Destination/Contact: Gentleman Farmer is deeply committed to hospitality. They recently transitioned into a new, immersive tasting space known as “The Bungalow” in the St. Helena/Napa area, which presents a tailored, luxurious experience complete with music and hors d’oeuvres. Bookings are essential.

Moving down the coast to Santa Barbara County’s Sta. Rita Hills, we find Camins 2 Dreams, founded by wife-and-wife winemaking team Tara Gomez (a member of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians) and Mireia Taribó (originally from Spain). Their name, translating to “Paths to Dreams,” reflects the journey that brought their diverse backgrounds together to produce minimal-intervention, terroir-driven wines.

• Featured Varietals: They excel with unique and sometimes challenging grapes, including a standout Grüner Veltliner and a powerful Spear Vineyard Syrah. Their Spanish heritage shines through in their exploration of Gamay, Grenache, and Carignan, all fermented with natural yeast.

• Destination/Contact: Their tasting room is located in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto, a cluster of warehouses where many Sta. Rita Hills producers craft their wines. It offers an intimate, working-winery experience. (Tasting Room: 1520 East Chestnut Court, Lompoc, CA 93436)

Oregon’s Willamette Valley is famous for Pinot Noir, but for Remy Wines, it’s a cradle for Northern Italian varietals. Remy Drabkin is an openly queer winemaker and a true Oregonian, who also happens to be the first woman and first queer-identified person to serve as the Mayor of McMinnville. Since launching Remy

Wines in 2006, she has focused on honoring traditional Italian grapes—a bold choice in a Pinot-dominant region—and weaving a tight social fabric. Remy is also the co-founder of Wine Country Pride.

• Featured Varietals: Look for her singlevarietal expressions of Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Dolcetto, and Lagrein. These wines are Old World in style: structured, food-friendly, and intended to age. Her ‘Three Wives’ label offers accessible blends.

• Destination/Contact: The tasting room is housed in a beautiful 1900s Farmhouse located on the family’s vineyard in the Dundee Hills AVA. They welcome visitors for tastings, often available without reservations, but reservations are encouraged for larger groups. (Tasting Room: 17495 NE McDougall Road, Dayton, Oregon)

THE RADICAL EDGE: MINIMAL INTERVENTION AND REGENERATIVE FARMING

The ethos of authenticity is often paired with a minimal-intervention approach in the cellar, leading to experimental, vibrant, and sustainable wines. This new generation sees regenerative farming and social equity as inseparable parts of the winemaking process. Krista Scruggs, founder and winemaker of Zafa Wines (and a key player in the Kalche Wine Cooperative ), is a force for change. Named one of Wine Enthusiast’s 40 Under 40 Tastemakers, her philosophy is radical simplicity: “Just fermented juice.” Based primarily in Vermont, she champions diversity, equity, and regeneration, treating the land and her workers with the same justice she demands for people.

• Featured Varietals: Zafa specializes in unique co-ferments and natural wines, often blending grapes with fruits like apples and peaches—a move that challenges the very definition of “wine.” Her production is low-intervention, raw, and exhilaratingly expressive. Seek out her orange wines or pet-nats for a vibrant experience.

• Destination/Contact: Zafa often works through a cooperative model and hosts pop-up events and tastings, rather than having a fixed cellar door. Check the website for current events and availability.

• Learn More: www.zafawines.com

Another winery with commitment to low-intervention practices is Terah Wine Co, founded by winemaker and certified sommelier Terah Bajjalieh. Terah Wine Co. is a reflection of her global wine travels (13 harvests across five countries). Terah, an openly queer Palestinian-American woman of color, sources organic and biodynamic fruit from various California microclimates—from Lodi to Santa Clara—to highlight diverse, food-friendly Mediterranean varietals. Her wines are known for their precision, focus, and ability to showcase terroir with minimal manipulation.

• Featured Varietals: A great example of her style is the Skin Contact Vermentino. This wine is natively fermented and aged in stainless steel, offering texture, bright acidity, and layers of citrus and mineral notes, challenging the norms of California white winemaking. She also

produces sought-after Barbera and Sangiovese.

• Destination/Contact: Terah Wine Co. is a small-batch operation focused on the craft. They do not maintain a fixed public tasting room but often participate in local wine festivals (like the Equality Wine Festival) and pop-up events across the Bay Area. Wine is primarily sold via their website and select retailers.

• Learn More: www.terahwineco.com

Birdhorse, founded by Corinne Rich and Katie Rouse, focuses on shining a light on “unsung” grape varietals grown in California, moving beyond the ubiquitous Cabernet and Chardonnay. Their wines are dynamic, foodfriendly, and expressive, perfectly capturing the spirit of modern, boundary-pushing California wine.

• Featured Varietals: Birdhorse focuses on Mediterranean varietals that thrive in California’s climate, such as bright, aromatic Verdelho, structured Carignan, and light, refreshing Valdiguié Their low-production, high-quality focus has earned them national acclaim.

• Destination/Contact: Birdhorse is a small-batch operation, prioritizing allocation through their wine club and select retailers. While they do not have a dedicated public tasting room, they host occasional pickup events and popup tastings in the Bay Area.

In Napa Valley, the husband-and-husband team of Jeff Davis and Greg Brickey craft exquisite wines under the label Majuscule Wine. Their name, meaning “capital letter,” speaks to their belief that wine is a language of the land. They focus on micro-production, working with single-vineyard sites to capture the unique expression of place.

• Featured Varietals: Their focus is primarily on classic California expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Sauvignon Blanc made with a thoughtful, Old-World restraint that allows the delicate vineyard characteristics to shine through.

• Destination/Contact: Majuscule operates primarily by appointment for private tastings, offering a personalized experience in the heart of Napa wine country. (Tasting Room: Mia Carta Tasting Collective, 1209 First Street, Napa, California)

GLOBAL EXPRESSIONS: FROM EUROPE TO THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE

The LGBTQ+ presence is less immediately visible in the historical wine structures of Europe, but queer winemakers are thriving, particularly those focused on organic, sustainable, and family-driven production.

Piedmont, Italy is famous for Barolo and Barbaresco, massive, long-lived wines requiring patience and tradition. Yet, even here, a modern, inclusive sensibility is taking hold.

In the small, focused appellation of Dogliani, Eraldo Revelli and his family operate a small, organic winery, that is deeply rooted in the land. Eraldo is a respected and openly gay voice in a

region that often keeps its private life separate from its public persona. His work champions the local red grape, Dolcetto, emphasizing purity and organic farming.

• Featured Varietals: Eraldo’s focus is on Dolcetto, particularly the Dogliani Superiore, which delivers rich notes of black cherry, licorice, and firm tannins. He also works with other Piedmontese staples, crafting wines that are true to the terroir of Monforte d’Alba. Look for the “Autin Lungh” or “Otto Filari” labels.

• Destination/Contact: The estate is located near Monforte d’Alba, one of the most picturesque towns in the Langhe. Visits are typically intimate and by appointment

only, offering a direct view into a traditional Piedmontese cellar with a modern, welcoming heart.

The Southwest of France, often overshadowed by Bordeaux, is a haven for small, innovative producers, including some who have brought an international perspective to classic French vineyards. Chateau Lestevenie, situated in the Bergerac region of the Dordogne, is owned by English expatriates who have fully embraced the organic and sustainable methods of French viticulture. While outside the major tourist hubs, their commitment to producing clean, expressive wines—both red and white—has earned them a loyal following.

• Featured Varietals: They produce excellent examples of the region’s diverse offerings, including a crisp Bergerac Blanc (typically Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc blend) and a vibrant Bergerac Rouge (Merlot/Cabernet Franc). These

wines are known for their freshness and clear expression of the fruit.

• Destination/Contact: The Chateau is a charming stop in Saint-Méard-deGurçon. They welcome visitors for tours and tastings, often with the winemaker/owner leading the experience. Given their location, it is a perfect stop on a relaxed drive through the French countryside.

SOUTH AFRICA: HOSPITALITY AND HIGH-ALTITUDE GLAM

South Africa’s winelands, particularly those surrounding Cape Town, are globally recognized for their quality and welcoming environment, often ranking highly for LGBTQ+ travelers. While specific small LGBTQ+ owned estates are often difficult to track due to the size of the industry, the region embraces inclusivity. Many LGBTQ+ certified operators run tours through this region, ensuring a celebrated experience.

While not explicitly owned by an LGBTQ+ couple, Cape Point Vineyards is a must-visit, often highlighted by queer tour operators for its welcoming atmosphere, stunning setting, and commitment to excellence. Located in the coastal hamlet of Noordhoek, this vineyard is known for its incredible high-altitude Sauvignon Blanc.

• Featured Varietal: The Isliedh Sauvignon Blanc, their flagship wine, is a complex, barrel-fermented white that defies expectations for the varietal. It exhibits texture, depth, and layers of citrus and mineral notes.

• Destination/Contact: The vineyard offers panoramic views over the Atlantic, with an upscale Braai (barbecue) experience available. For an exclusive experience, many LGBTQ+-certified tour operators can arrange private hilltop tastings.

• Learn More: www.capepointvineyards.co.za

While not an exhaustive list, many others we have highlighted in the past, these winemakers, owners, and operators are quietly leading the charge for a more equitable, sustainable, and innovative industry. They embrace heritage while refusing to be bound by outdated conventions, leading to wines that are vibrant, authentic, and truly expressive of both the land and the hands that made them.

Next time you’re selecting a bottle, seeking out these names is more than a gesture of support; it’s a guaranteed path to discovering exceptional wine that tastes all the better for the integrity and passion poured into it. ■

TO SNOW GOOD

AT THE ULTIMATE GAY SKI WEEK

ELEVATION 2026

DROP YOUR SPEEDOS, PULL ON YOUR LONG JOHNS, GAY SKI SEASON IS UPON US! Search for the perfectly fitted body-hugging onesie that buttons down just so. Or the loose silly unicorn onesie that could almost fit another person in there with you ... but with a scandalous rear window.

More than 20 years ago, LA-based event producer and marketer Tom Whitman put his love of producing big gay events together with his lifelong love of skiing and snowboarding and remixed them into the first Elevation Gay Ski Week in Mammoth Lakes, CA.

The first Elevation in 2003 drew a core crowd of California boys that quickly grew into one of the largest gay ski weeks in the world. Whitman expanded to Park City, Utah and Tremblant, Quebec and the rest is history.

The Elevation Gay Ski Weeks became the gold standard of gay getaways and are now the largest series of gay ski events in the world. Whether it’s Elevation Mammoth – full of CA boys and girls, from SoCal surfer bromos to queer Silver Lake/Bay Area scruffy boys or Mammoth’s Sweet Sixteen baby brother in Park City -- you know exactly what you’re getting into with an Elevation event: the three big Ds...DJs, dancers and drag queens, of course. OK, maybe there is a fourth D as well if you play your cards right.

While each ELEVATION event has its own local flavor and flair, there are events that are crowd favorites in both Utah and Mammoth: The Onesie Apres-Ski is an ELEVATION Gay Ski Week institution that is both sexy and silly. Where else can you find a collection of muscle boys in ass-less onesies, burner boys in rainbow bodysuits, gaymers in unicorn-horn hoodies, and lumberjocks in wool socks? The Neon Party gives attendees a chance to break out their best blacklight reactive club wear and show their artistic expression via neon body paint.

Brolesque returns to Elevation, with an all-new male dance show that blends camp, sensuality and unapologetic queer artistry. It’s not your typical burlesque show, it reimagines the art form with a bold, masculine twist. “Performing Brolesque at Elevation was incredible,” says Lockhart Brownlie, the show’s choreographer and creator, “Our shows sold out, the audiences were electric, and the production team made the whole experience effortless.”

The communities of Park City and Mammoth have embraced the Elevation events from the beginning. Venue and mountain staff talk about how they look forward to Elevation week every year. “Elevation continues to surpass expectations,” says Stephanie Peterson, a Mammoth local who has worked with the event

for more than a decade. “Here at Mammoth Mountain, it represents far more than a celebration—it serves as a meaningful space where the LGBTQ+ community comes together to connect, feel recognized, and experience joy on their own terms. It stands as a powerful reminder that the mountains are a place for everyone.”

“Each year, when snow starts to fall in November, I get excited for Elevation,” says

Whitman, “I’m super proud of the community we’ve built with Elevation. Every year, it feels like going home.” ■
