hile freezing temperatures herald the festive season in other parts of the world, we know it’s Christmas in Singapore when the decorations go up on the streets of Orchard Road.

What we lack in real snow, we make up for in fabulously festive décor. From the snow-capped cottages in shopping malls to the cotton-wool snow we used to decorate our Christmas trees with, oh how we fervently wished for a White Christmas in our Little Red Dot when we were little.

We’d squirm in anticipation when queuing up to meet Santa at the atrium of a mall, and squeal in delight he handed us a little Christmas keepsake (even though he did look a little more Asian that the Jolly St Nick we saw on TV) as Bing Crosby sang Silver Bells on the PA system. Ah, memories.

t’s been raining all week, and spending a night out in a packed venue doesn’t really sound like the kind of Christmas you’d want to have with your close friends and family.

Sound familiar? It should for most of us over the age of “club kid”.

Welcome to the era of house parties.

Putting together a Christmas party at home might seem like a simple enough task: Get some chilled drinks, grab a few bags of chips, select a festive playlist off Spotify and call a few friends. Well you could do that, but come on — it’s Christmas.

The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year deserves putting a little more effort into, don’t you think?

You don’t necessarily need to pull out all the stops while pulling out your hair with all the work, but some relatively simple steps are all it takes to make the evening right. Here are 12 tips — which take less than 12 days to handle — that’ll surely make you the host(ess) with the most(est).

APPOINT A CO-HOST

You want a nice mix of guests but you also want to make sure no one feels out of place. It’s really all about the conversation dynamics so we’d advise work colleagues as a group on one evening, family and close friends on another. It makes it a lot easier for you to be a part of the main festivities instead of trying to make sure that one guy is having a good time.

This isn’t a sit-down dinner, so no one’s looking for a five-course meal. Still, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t bother to feed your guests.

Lighting ghting is essential in creating the he mood for the evening. Add some fairy lights or light some candles (they shouldn’t all be differently scented or it’ll be a sensory overkill) for an instant festive interior. . Preheat oven to 80°C. 2. Grease an oven-proof dish with butter.

3. Cut bread into triangular slices and butter each on one side.

Arrange bread slices, buttered side down, to cover the base of the dish.

Sprinkle dried fruits/raisins over.

Repeat the layering process, taking note that the top layer of bread slices should have the buttered side facing up.

4. Beat eggs, milk and double cream together and pour over the pudding.

5. Sprinkle sugar over the top and bake for 30 min, until the pudding has risen slightly and the top is browned and crisp.

6. Serve warm with ice cream or double cream.
